Peter an apostle of Jesus Christ To thethose who are elect exiles of the Dispersion in Pontus Galatia Cappado′ciaCappadocia Asia and Bithyn′ia Bithynia |
| 1:2 |
chosenaccording andto destinedthe byforeknowledge of God the Father andin sanctifiedthe bysanctification of the Spirit for obedience to Jesus Christ and for sprinkling with his blood: May grace and peace be multiplied to you |
| 1:3 |
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ ByAccording to his great mercy wehe havehas beencaused us to be born anewagain to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead |
| 1:4 |
and to an inheritance whichthat is imperishable undefiled and unfading kept in heaven for you |
| 1:5 |
who by Gods power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time |
| 1:6 |
In this you rejoice though now for a little while if necessary you may have tobeen suffergrieved by various trials |
| 1:7 |
so that the tested genuineness of your faith —more precious than gold whichthat perishes though perishableit is tested by fire —may redoundbe found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ |
| 1:8 |
WithoutThough havingyou have not seen him you love him; thoughThough you do not now see him you believe in him and rejoice with unutterablejoy that is inexpressible and exaltedfilled joywith glory |
| 1:9 |
Asobtaining the outcome of your faith you obtain the salvation of your souls |
| 1:10 |
TheConcerning this salvation the prophets who prophesied ofabout the grace that was to be yours searched and inquired about this salvation; carefully |
| 1:11 |
theyinquiring inquired what person or time was indicated by the Spirit of Christ withinin them was indicating when predictinghe predicted the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glory glories |
| 1:12 |
It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you in the things whichthat have now been announced to you bythrough those who preached the good news to you throughby the Holy Spirit sent from heaven things into which angels long to look |
| 1:13 |
Therefore girdpreparing up your minds befor action and being sober minded set your hope fully uponon the grace that iswill comingbe brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ |
| 1:15 |
but as he who called you is holy you also be holy yourselves in all your conduct; |
| 1:17 |
And if you invokecall on him as Father him who judges each one impartially according to hiseach ones deeds conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile |
| 1:18 |
Youknowing know that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your fathersforefathers not with perishable things such as silver or gold |
| 1:20 |
He was destinedforeknown before the foundation of the world but was made manifest atin the endlast of the times for yourthe sake of you |
| 1:21 |
Throughwho through him youare havebelievers confidence in God who raised him from the dead and gave him glory so that your faith and hope are in God |
| 1:22 |
Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love of the brethren love one another earnestly from thea pure heart |
| 1:23 |
Yousince you have been born anewagain not of perishable seed but of imperishable through the living and abiding word of God; |
| 1:25 |
but the word of the Lord abidesremains forforever everAnd Thatthis word is the good news whichthat was preached to you |
| 2:1 |
So put away all malice and all guiledeceit and insincerityhypocrisy and envy and all slander |
| 2:2 |
Like newborn babesinfants long for the pure spiritual milk that by it you may grow up tointo salvation; — |
| 2:3 |
forif indeed you have tasted that the kindnessLord ofis the Lordgood |
| 2:4 |
ComeAs you come to him toa that living stone rejected by men but in Godsthe sight of God chosen and precious; |
| 2:5 |
andyou yourselves like living stones beare yourselvesbeing built intoup as a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ |
| 2:6 |
For it stands in scriptureScripture: Behold I am laying in Zion a stone a cornerstone chosen and precious and hewhoever who believes in him will not be put to shame |
| 2:7 |
ToSo youthe thereforehonor whois believefor heyou iswho preciousbelieve but for those who do not believe The very stone whichthat the builders rejected has become the head of the cornercornerstone |
| 2:8 |
and A stone thatof willstumbling makeand men stumble a rock thatof willoffense makeThey them fall; for they stumble because they disobey the word as they were destined to do |
| 2:9 |
But you are a chosen race a royal priesthood a holy nation Godsa people for his own peoplepossession that you may declareproclaim the wonderfulexcellencies deeds of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light |
| 2:10 |
Once you were nonot a people but now you are Gods people; once you had not received mercy but now you have received mercy |
| 2:11 |
Beloved I beseechurge you as alienssojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh thatwhich wage war against your soul |
| 2:12 |
MaintainKeep goodyour conduct among the Gentiles honorable so that inwhen case they speak against you as wrongdoersevildoers they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation |
| 2:14 |
or to governors as sent by him to punish those who do wrongevil and to praise those who do right good |
| 2:15 |
For itthis is Godsthe will of God that by doing rightgood you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish men people |
| 2:16 |
Live as freepeople menwho yetare withoutfree not using your freedom as a pretextcover up for evil; but liveliving as servants of God |
| 2:17 |
Honor alleveryone men Love the brotherhood Fear God Honor the emperor |
| 2:18 |
Servants be submissivesubject to your masters with all respect not only to the kindgood and gentle but also to the overbearing unjust |
| 2:19 |
For onethis is approveda ifgracious thing when mindful of God heone endures painsorrows while suffering unjustly |
| 2:20 |
For what credit is it if when you dosin wrong and are beaten for it you takeendure it patiently But if when you do rightgood and suffer for it you takeendure itthis patientlyis youa havegracious Godsthing approvalin the sight of God |
| 2:21 |
For to this you have been called because Christ also suffered for you leaving you an example so that you shouldmight follow in his steps |
| 2:22 |
He committed no sin; noneither guile was deceit found onin his lips mouth |
| 2:23 |
When he was reviled he did not revile in return; when he suffered he did not threaten; but hecontinued trustedentrusting himself to him who judges justly |
| 2:25 |
For you were straying like sheep but have now returned to the Shepherd and GuardianOverseer of your souls |
| 3:1 |
Likewise you wives be submissivesubject to your own husbands so that someeven thoughif theysome do not obey the word they may be won without a word by the behaviorconduct of their wives |
| 3:2 |
when they see your reverentrespectful and chastepure behavior conduct |
| 3:3 |
LetDo not yourslet your adorning be external—the outward adorning with braiding of hair decorationand the putting on of gold andjewelry wearingor ofthe fine clothing you wear— |
| 3:4 |
but let ityour adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable jewelbeauty of a gentle and quiet spirit which in Gods sight is very precious |
| 3:5 |
SoFor oncethis is how the holy women who hoped in God used to adorn themselves andby weresubmitting submissive to their own husbands |
| 3:6 |
as Sarah obeyed Abraham calling him lord And you are now her children if you do rightgood and letdo nothingnot terrifyfear youanything that is frightening |
| 3:7 |
Likewise you husbands live considerately with your wives bestowingin an understanding way showing honor onto the woman as the weaker sexvessel since youthey are joint heirs with you of the grace of life inso order that your prayers may not be hindered |
| 3:8 |
Finally all of you have unity of spiritmind sympathy brotherly love of the brethren a tender heart and a humble mind |
| 3:9 |
Do not returnrepay evil for evil or reviling for reviling; but on the contrary bless for to this you havewere been called that you may obtain a blessing |
| 3:10 |
For HeWhoever thatdesires wouldto love life and see good days let him keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking guiledeceit; |
| 3:11 |
let him turn away from evil and do rightgood; let him seek peace and pursue it |
| 3:12 |
For the eyes of the Lord are uponon the righteous and his ears are open to their prayer But the face of the Lord is against those thatwho do evil |
| 3:13 |
Now who is there to harm you if you are zealous for what is right good |
| 3:14 |
But even if you doshould suffer for righteousness sake you will be blessed Have no fear of them nor be troubled |
| 3:15 |
but in your hearts reverencehonor Christ asthe Lord Alwaysas beholy always being prepared to make a defense to anyanyone one who callsasks you tofor accounta reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and reverence; respect |
| 3:16 |
andhaving keepa yourgood conscience clear so that when you are abusedslandered those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame |
| 3:17 |
For it is better to suffer for doing rightgood if that should be Gods will than for doing wrong evil |
| 3:18 |
For Christ also diedsuffered for sins once for allsins the righteous for the unrighteous that he might bring us to God being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit; |
| 3:19 |
in which he went and preachedproclaimed to the spirits in prison |
| 3:20 |
whobecause they formerly did not obey when Gods patience waited in the days of Noah duringwhile the buildingark ofwas thebeing arkprepared in which a few that is eight persons were savedbrought safely through water |
| 3:21 |
Baptism which corresponds to this now saves you not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a cleargood conscience through the resurrection of Jesus Christ |
| 3:22 |
who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God with angels authorities and powers subjecthaving been subjected to him |
| 4:1 |
Since therefore Christ suffered in the flesh arm yourselves with the same thoughtway of thinking for whoever has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin |
| 4:2 |
so as to live for the rest of the time in the flesh no longer byfor human passions but byfor the will of God |
| 4:3 |
LetFor the time that is past sufficesuffices for doing what the Gentiles likewant to do living in licentiousnesssensuality passions drunkenness revelsorgies carousingdrinking parties and lawless idolatry |
| 4:4 |
TheyWith respect to this they are surprised thatwhen you do not now join them in the same wildflood profligacyof debauchery and they abusemalign you; |
| 4:6 |
For this is why the gospel was preached even to thethose who are dead that though judged in the flesh likethe menway people are they might live in the spirit likethe way God does |
| 4:7 |
The end of all things is at hand; therefore keepbe saneself controlled and sober minded for the sake of your prayers |
| 4:8 |
Above all holdkeep unfailingloving your love for one another earnestly since love covers a multitude of sins |
| 4:9 |
PracticeShow hospitality ungrudgingly to one another without grumbling |
| 4:10 |
As each has received a gift employuse it forto serve one another as good stewards of Gods varied grace: |
| 4:11 |
whoever speaks as one who uttersspeaks oracles of God; whoever rendersserves service as one who rendersserves it by the strength whichthat God supplies; —in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ To him belong glory and dominion forforever ever and ever Amen |
| 4:12 |
Beloved do not be surprised at the fiery ordealtrial whichwhen it comes upon you to provetest you as though something strange were happening to you |
| 4:13 |
But rejoice ininsofar so far as you share Christs sufferings that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed |
| 4:14 |
If you are reproachedinsulted for the name of Christ you are blessed because the spiritSpirit of glory and of God rests upon you |
| 4:15 |
But let none of you suffer as a murderer or a thief or aan wrongdoerevildoer or as a mischief maker; meddler |
| 4:16 |
yetYet if oneanyone suffers as a Christian let him not be ashamed but under that name let him glorify God in that name |
| 4:17 |
For theit is time has come for judgment to begin withat the household of God; and if it begins with us what will be the endoutcome offor those who do not obey the gospel of God |
| 4:18 |
And If the righteous man is scarcely saved wherewhat will become of the impiousungodly and the sinner appear |
| 4:19 |
Therefore let those who suffer according to Gods will do right and entrust their souls to a faithful Creator while doing good |
| 5:1 |
So I exhort the elders among you as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed : |
| 5:2 |
Tendshepherd the flock of God that is youramong chargeyou exercising oversight not byunder constraintcompulsion but willingly as God would have you; not for shameful gain but eagerly ; |
| 5:3 |
not as domineering over those in your charge but being examples to the flock |
| 5:4 |
And when the chief Shepherd isappears manifested you will obtainreceive the unfading crown of glory |
| 5:5 |
Likewise you thatwho are younger be subject to the elders Clothe yourselves all of you with humility toward one another for God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble |
| 5:6 |
Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God so that inat duethe proper time he may exalt you |
| 5:7 |
Castcasting all your anxieties on him forbecause he cares aboutfor you |
| 5:8 |
Be sober minded; be watchful Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion seeking somesomeone one to devour |
| 5:9 |
Resist him firm in your faith knowing that the same experiencekinds of suffering isare requiredbeing ofexperienced by your brotherhood throughout the world |
| 5:10 |
And after you have suffered a little while the God of all grace who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ will himself restore establishconfirm strengthen and strengthenestablish you |
| 5:11 |
To him be the dominion forforever ever and ever Amen |
| 5:12 |
By Silva′nusSilvanus a faithful brother as I regard him I have written briefly to you exhorting and declaring that this is the true grace of God; standStand fastfirm in it |
| 5:13 |
She who is at Babylon who is likewise chosen sends you greetings; and so does Mark my son Mark |
| 5:14 |
Greet one another with the kiss of love Peace to all of you thatwho are in Christ |
