butBut he said to them I must preachproclaim the good news of the kingdom of God to the other cities also; for I was sent for this purpose |
| 4:44 |
AndSo he wascontinued preachingproclaiming the message in the synagogues of Judea |
| 5:1 |
WhileOnce thewhile peopleJesus pressedwas uponstanding himbeside to hear the wordlake of GodGennesaret heand the crowd was standingpressing byin on him to hear the lakeword of Gennes′aretGod |
| 5:2 |
And he saw two boats bythere at the shore of the lake; but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets |
| 5:3 |
GettingHe got into one of the boats whichthe wasone Simonsbelonging heto Simon and asked him to put out a little way from the landshore AndThen he sat down and taught the peoplecrowds from the boat |
| 5:4 |
AndWhen when he had ceasedfinished speaking he said to Simon Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch |
| 5:5 |
And Simon answered Master we toiledhave worked all night andlong tookbut have caught nothing ButYet atif youryou wordsay so I will let down the nets |
| 5:6 |
AndWhen when they had done this they enclosedcaught aso greatmany shoal of fish; andthat as their nets were breakingbeginning to break |
| 5:7 |
So they beckonedsignaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them And they came and filled both the boats so that they began to sink |
| 5:8 |
But when Simon Peter saw it he fell down at Jesus knees saying DepartGo away from me Lord for I am a sinful man O Lord |
| 5:9 |
For he was astonished and all thatwho were with him were amazed at the catch of fish whichthat they had taken; |
| 5:10 |
and so also were James and John sons of Zeb′edeeZebedee who were partners with Simon AndThen Jesus said to Simon Do not be afraid; henceforthfrom now on you will be catching menpeople |
| 5:11 |
AndWhen when they had brought their boats to landshore they left everything and followed him |
| 5:12 |
WhileOnce when he was in one of the cities there camewas a man fullcovered ofwith leprosy; andWhen when he saw Jesus he fellbowed onwith his face to the ground and besoughtbegged him Lord if you willchoose you can make me clean |
| 5:13 |
AndThen heJesus stretched out his hand and touched him sayingand said I will;do bechoose Be made clean AndImmediately immediately the leprosy left him |
| 5:14 |
And he chargedordered him to tell no one; butGo gohe said and show yourself to the priest and as Moses commanded make an offering for your cleansing as Moses commanded for a prooftestimony to thethem people |
| 5:15 |
But sonow muchmore thethan moreever the reportword wentabout abroadJesus concerningspread himabroad; andmany greatcrowds multitudeswould gatheredgather to hear him and to be healedcured of their infirmitiesdiseases |
| 5:16 |
But he withdrewwould withdraw to thedeserted wildernessplaces and prayedpray |
| 5:17 |
OnOne oneday ofwhile those days as he was teaching there were Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting near by whothey had come from every village of Galilee and Judea and from Jerusalem; and the power of the Lord was with him to heal |
| 5:18 |
AndJust beholdthen some men werecame bringingcarrying on a bedparalyzed a man whoon wasa paralyzedbed andThey theywere soughttrying to bring him in and lay him before Jesus; |
| 5:19 |
but finding no way to bring him in because of the crowd they went up on the roof and let him down with his bed through the tiles into the midstmiddle beforeof the crowd in front of Jesus |
| 5:20 |
AndWhen when he saw their faith he said ManFriend your sins are forgiven you |
| 5:21 |
AndThen the scribes and the Pharisees began to question saying Who is this thatwho speaksis speaking blasphemies Who can forgive sins but God onlyalone |
| 5:22 |
When Jesus perceived their questionings he answered them Why do you questionraise such questions in your hearts |
| 5:23 |
Which is easier to say Your sins are forgiven you or to say RiseStand up and walk |
| 5:24 |
But so that you may know that the Son of manMan has authority on earth to forgive sins—he said to the manone who was paralyzed—I say to you risestand up and take up your bed and go to your home |
| 5:25 |
AndImmediately immediately he rosestood up before them and took upwhat thathe onhad whichbeen helying layon and went to his home glorifying God |
| 5:26 |
AndAmazement amazement seized all of them all and they glorified God and were filled with awe saying We have seen strange things today |
| 5:27 |
After this he went out and saw a tax collector named Levi sitting at the tax officebooth; and he said to him Follow me |
| 5:28 |
And he got up left everything and rose and followed him |
| 5:29 |
AndThen Levi madegave him a great feastbanquet for him in his house; and there was a large companycrowd of tax collectors and others sitting at the table with them |
| 5:30 |
AndThe the Pharisees and their scribes murmuredwere againstcomplaining to his disciples saying Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners |
| 5:31 |
And Jesus answered them Those who are well have no need of a physician but those who are sick; |
| 5:32 |
I have not come to call not the righteous but sinners to repentance |
| 5:33 |
AndThen they said to him TheJohns disciples oflike Johnthe fastdisciples oftenof andthe offerPharisees prayersfrequently fast and sopray dobut theyour disciples of the Pharisees but yours eat and drink |
| 5:34 |
And Jesus said to them CanYou youcannot make wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them can you |
| 5:35 |
The days will come when the bridegroom iswill be taken away from them and then they will fast in those days |
| 5:36 |
He also told them a parable also: No one tears a piece from a new garment and putssews it uponon an old garment; ifotherwise hethe doesnew he will tearbe thetorn new and the piece from the new will not match the old |
| 5:37 |
And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; ifotherwise he does the new wine will burst the skins and it will be spilled and the skins will be destroyed |
| 5:39 |
And no one after drinking old wine desires new; forwine hebut says The old is good |
| 6:1 |
OnOne a sabbath while heJesus was going through the grainfields his disciples plucked and ate some heads of grain rubbingrubbed them in their hands and ate them |
| 6:2 |
But some of the Pharisees said Why are you doing what is not lawful to do on the sabbath |
| 6:3 |
And Jesus answered Have you not read what David did when he was hungry he and thosehis whocompanions were withhungry him: |
| 6:4 |
howHe he entered the house of God and took and ate the bread of the Presence which it is not lawful for any but the priests to eat and also gave itsome to thosehis withcompanions him |
| 6:5 |
AndThen he said to them The Son of manMan is lord of the sabbath |
| 6:6 |
On another sabbath when he entered the synagogue and taught and there was a man was there whose right hand was withered |
| 6:7 |
AndThe the scribes and the Pharisees watched him to see whether he would healcure on the sabbath so that they might find an accusation against him |
| 6:8 |
ButEven though he knew theirwhat thoughtsthey andwere thinking he said to the man who had the withered hand Come and stand here AndHe hegot roseup and stood there |
| 6:9 |
AndThen Jesus said to them I ask you is it lawful on the sabbath to do good or to do harm on the sabbath to save life or to destroy it |
| 6:10 |
AndAfter helooking looked around onat all of them allhe and said to him Stretch out your hand AndHe he did so and his hand was restored |
| 6:12 |
InNow theseduring those days he went out to the mountain to pray; and allhe nightspent hethe continuednight in prayer to God |
| 6:13 |
And when itday wascame day he called his disciples and chose fromtwelve of them twelve whom he also named apostles;: |
| 6:14 |
Simon whom he named Peter and Andrew his brother Andrew and James and John and Philip and Bartholomew |
| 6:15 |
and Matthew and Thomas and James the son of Alphaeus and Simon who was called the Zealot |
| 6:16 |
and Judas the son of James and Judas Iscariot who became a traitor |
| 6:17 |
AndHe he came down with them and stood on a level place with a great crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the seacoastcoast of Tyre and Sidon who came to hear him and to be healed of their diseases; |
| 6:18 |
They had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases; and those who were troubled with unclean spirits were cured |
| 6:19 |
And all in the crowd soughtwere trying to touch him for power came forthout from him and healed all of them all |
| 6:20 |
AndThen he liftedlooked up hisat eyes on his disciples and said: Blessed are you who are poor for yours is the kingdom of God |
| 6:21 |
Blessed are you thatwho hungerare hungry now for you shallwill be satisfiedfilled Blessed are you thatwho weep now for you shallwill laugh |
| 6:22 |
Blessed are you when menpeople hate you and when they exclude you and revile you and castdefame outyou your name as evil on account of the Son of manMan |
| 6:23 |
Rejoice in that day and leap for joy for beholdsurely your reward is great in heaven; for sothat is what their fathersancestors did to the prophets |
| 6:24 |
But woe to you thatwho are rich for you have received your consolation |
| 6:25 |
Woe to you thatwho are full now for you shallwill hungerbe hungry Woe to you thatwho laughare laughing now for you shallwill mourn and weep |
| 6:26 |
Woe to you when all men speak well of you for sothat is what their fathersancestors did to the false prophets |
| 6:27 |
But I say to you that hearlisten Love your enemies do good to those who hate you |
| 6:29 |
ToIf himanyone who strikes you on the cheek offer the other also; and from himanyone who takes away your coat do not withhold even your shirt |
| 6:30 |
Give to everyeveryone one who begs from you; and ofif himanyone who takes away your goods do not ask for them again |
| 6:31 |
AndDo to others as you wishwould thathave menthem would do to you do so to them |
| 6:33 |
AndIf if you do good to those who do good to you what credit is that to you For even sinners do the same |
| 6:34 |
AndIf if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive what credit is that to you Even sinners lend to sinners to receive as much again |
| 6:35 |
But love your enemies and do good and lend expecting nothing in return; andYour your reward will be great and you will be sonschildren of the Most High; for he is kind to the ungrateful and the selfishwicked |
| 6:36 |
Be merciful evenjust as your Father is merciful |
| 6:37 |
JudgeDo not judge and you will not be judged; condemndo not condemn and you will not be condemned; forgiveForgive and you will be forgiven; |
| 6:38 |
give and it will be given to you; A good measure pressed down shaken together running over will be put into your lap; Forfor the measure you give will be the measure you get back |
| 6:39 |
He also told them a parable: Can a blind manperson leadguide a blind manperson Will they not both fall into a pit |
| 6:40 |
A disciple is not above histhe teacher but everyeveryone onewho when he is fully taughtqualified will be like histhe teacher |
| 6:41 |
Why do you see the speck that is in your brothersneighbors eye but do not notice the log that is in your own eye |
| 6:42 |
Or how can you say to your brotherneighbor BrotherFriend let me take out the speck that is in your eye when you yourself do not see the log that is in your own eye You hypocrite first take the log out of your own eye and then you will see clearly to take out the speck thatout isof in your brothersneighbors eye |
| 6:43 |
ForNo no good tree bears bad fruit nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit; |
| 6:44 |
for each tree is known by its own fruit ForFigs figs are not gathered from thorns nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush |
| 6:45 |
The good manperson out of the good treasure of histhe heart produces good and the evil manperson out of his evil treasure produces evil; for it is out of the abundance of the heart histhat the mouth speaks |
| 6:46 |
Why do you call me Lord Lord and do not do what I tell you |
| 6:47 |
EveryI onewill show you what someone is like who comes to me and hears my words and doesacts on them I will show you what he is like: |
| 6:48 |
heThat one is like a man building a house who dug deepdeeply and laid the foundation uponon rock; and when a flood arose the streamriver brokeburst against that house andbut could not shake it because it had been well built |
| 6:49 |
But hethe one who hears and does not doact them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation; againstWhen which the streamriver brokeburst andagainst it immediately it fell and great was the ruin of that house was great |
| 7:1 |
After heJesus had endedfinished all his sayings in the hearing of the people he entered Caper′naCapernaum um |
| 7:2 |
NowA a centurion there had a slave whowhom washe dearvalued tohighly himand who was sickill and atclose theto point of death |
| 7:3 |
When he heard ofabout Jesus he sent tosome himJewish elders ofto thehim Jews asking him to come and heal his slave |
| 7:4 |
AndWhen when they came to Jesus they besoughtappealed to him earnestly saying He is worthy toof havehaving you do this for him |
| 7:5 |
for he loves our nationpeople and it is he who built us our synagogue for us |
| 7:6 |
And Jesus went with them Whenbut when he was not far from the house the centurion sent friends to himsay saying to him Lord do not trouble yourself for I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; |
| 7:7 |
therefore I did not presume to come to you But sayonly speak the word and let my servant be healed |
| 7:8 |
For I also am a man set under authority with soldiers under me:; and I say to one Go and he goes; and to another Come and he comes; and to my slave Do this and hethe slave does it |
| 7:9 |
When Jesus heard this he marveledwas amazed at him and turnedturning and said to the multitudecrowd that followed him he said I tell you not even in Israel have I found such faith |
| 7:10 |
AndWhen when those who had been sent returned to the house they found the slave wellin good health |
| 7:11 |
Soon afterwardafterwards he went to a citytown called Na′inNain and his disciples and a greatlarge crowd went with him |
| 7:12 |
As he drewapproached near to the gate of the citytown behold a man who had died was being carried out theHe onlywas sonhis ofmothers hisonly motherson and she was a widow; and with her was a large crowd from the citytown was with her |
| 7:13 |
AndWhen when the Lord saw her he had compassion onfor her and said to her Do not weep |
| 7:14 |
AndThen he came forward and touched the bier and the bearers stood still And he said Young man I say to you ariserise |
| 7:15 |
AndThe the dead man sat up and began to speak Andand heJesus gave him to his mother |
| 7:16 |
Fear seized all of them all; and they glorified God saying A great prophet has arisenrisen among us and God has visitedlooked favorably on his people |
| 7:17 |
AndThis thisword reportabout concerning him spread throughthroughout the whole of Judea and all the surrounding country |
| 7:18 |
The disciples of John toldreported all these things to him So John summoned two of allhis thesedisciples things |
| 7:19 |
Andand John calling to him two of his disciples sent them to the Lord sayingto ask Are you hethe one who is to come or shallare we lookto wait for another |
| 7:20 |
AndWhen when the men had come to him they said John the Baptist has sent us to you sayingto ask Are you hethe one who is to come or shallare we lookto wait for another |
| 7:21 |
InJesus thathad hourjust hethen cured many people of diseases and plagues and evil spirits and onhad given sight to many thatwho were blind he bestowed sight |
| 7:22 |
And he answered them Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive their sight the lame walk the lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear the dead are raised up the poor have good news preachedbrought to them |
| 7:23 |
And blessed is heanyone who takes no offense at me |
| 7:24 |
When theJohns messengers of John had gone heJesus began to speak to the crowds concerningabout John: What did you go out into the wilderness to beholdlook at A reed shaken by the wind |
| 7:25 |
What then did you go out to see ASomeone mandressed clothed in soft clothingrobes BeholdLook those who areput gorgeouslyon appareledfine clothing and live in luxury are in kingsroyal courtspalaces |
| 7:27 |
This is hethe ofone about whom it is written BeholdSee I sendam sending my messenger beforeahead thyof faceyou who shallwill prepare thyyour way before theeyou |
| 7:28 |
I tell you among those born of women noneno one is greater than John; yet hethe who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he |
| 7:29 |
WhenAnd theyall the people who heard this allincluding the peopletax andcollectors acknowledged the taxjustice collectorsof justified God havingbecause they had been baptized with theJohns baptism of John; |
| 7:30 |
butBut by refusing to be baptized by him the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected theGods purpose of God for themselves not having been baptized by him |
| 7:31 |
To what then shallwill I compare the menpeople of this generation and what are they like |
| 7:32 |
They are like children sitting in the marketmarketplace place and calling to one another We pipedplayed tothe flute for you and you did not dance; we wailed and you did not weep |
| 7:33 |
For John the Baptist has come eating no bread and drinking no wine; and you say He has a demon; |
| 7:34 |
Thethe Son of manMan has come eating and drinking; and you say BeholdLook a glutton and a drunkard a friend of tax collectors and sinners |
| 7:35 |
YetNevertheless wisdom is justifiedvindicated by all her children |
| 7:36 |
One of the Pharisees asked himJesus to eat with him and he went into the Pharisees house and took his place at the table |
| 7:37 |
And behold a woman ofin the city who was a sinner whenhaving she learned that he was ateating table in the Pharisees house brought an alabaster flaskjar of ointment |
| 7:38 |
andShe standingstood behind him at his feet weeping sheand began to wetbathe his feet with her tears and wipedto dry them with theher hair ofThen hershe headcontinued andkissing kissed his feet and anointedanointing them with the ointment |
| 7:39 |
Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw it he said to himself If this man were a prophet he would have known who and what sortkind of woman this is who is touching him—that for she is a sinner |
| 7:40 |
And Jesus answeringspoke up and said to him Simon I have something to say to you AndTeacher he answeredreplied WhatSpeak is it Teacher |
| 7:42 |
When they could not pay he forgavecanceled themthe debts for both of them Now which of them will love him more |
| 7:43 |
Simon answered The one I suppose tothe one for whom he forgavecanceled morethe greater debt And heJesus said to him You have judged rightly |
| 7:44 |
Then turning toward the woman he said to Simon Do you see this woman I entered your house; you gave me no water for my feet but she has wetbathed my feet with her tears and wipeddried them with her hair |
| 7:45 |
You gave me no kiss but from the time I came in she has not ceasedstopped tokissing kiss my feet |
| 7:47 |
Therefore I tell you her sins which arewere many arehave been forgiven; forhence she lovedhas much;shown butgreat helove whoBut the one to whom little is forgiven little loves little |
| 7:48 |
AndThen he said to her Your sins are forgiven |
| 7:49 |
ThenBut those who were at the table with him began to say among themselves Who is this who even forgives sins |
| 8:1 |
Soon afterwardafterwards he went on through cities and villages preachingproclaiming and bringing the good news of the kingdom of God AndThe the twelve were with him |
| 8:2 |
andas alsowell as some women who had been healedcured of evil spirits and infirmities: Mary called Mag′daleneMagdalene from whom seven demons had gone out |
| 8:3 |
and JoJoanna an′na the wife of Chu′za Herods steward Chuza and Susanna and many others who provided for them out of their meansresources |
| 8:4 |
AndWhen when a great crowd camegathered together and people from town after town came to him he said in a parable: |
| 8:5 |
A sower went out to sow his seed; and as he sowed some fell alongon the path and was troddentrampled underon foot and the birds of the air devouredate it up |
| 8:6 |
AndSome some fell on the rock; and as it grew up it withered awayfor becauselack itof had no moisture |
| 8:7 |
AndSome some fell among thorns; and the thorns grew with it and choked it |
| 8:8 |
AndSome some fell into good soil and when it grew andit yieldedproduced a hundredfold As he said this he called out HeLet whoanyone haswith ears to hear let him hearlisten |
| 8:9 |
AndThen when his disciples asked him what this parable meant |
| 8:10 |
heHe said To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of God; but forto others theyI arespeak in parables so that seeinglooking they may not seeperceive and hearinglistening they may not understand |
| 8:12 |
The ones alongon the path are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts so that they may not believe and be saved |
| 8:13 |
AndThe the ones on the rock are those who when they hear the word receive it with joy; butBut these have no root; they believe only for a while and in a time of temptationtesting fall away |
| 8:14 |
AndAs as for what fell among the thorns theythese are thosethe ones who hear; but as they go on their way they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life and their fruit does not mature |
| 8:15 |
AndBut as for that in the good soil theythese are thosethe ones who hearingwhen they hear the word hold it fast in an honest and good heart and bringbear forth fruit with patiencepatient endurance |
| 8:16 |
No one after lighting a lamp covershides it withunder a vesseljar or puts it under a bed but puts it on a standlampstand so that those who enter may see the light |
| 8:17 |
For nothing is hidhidden that shallwill not be madedisclosed manifest nor is anything secret that shallwill not bebecome known and come to light |
| 8:18 |
TakeThen heedpay thenattention to how you hearlisten; for to himthose who hashave more will more be given; and from himthose who hasdo not have even what hethey thinksseem thatto hehave has will be taken away |
| 8:19 |
Then his mother and his brothers came to him but they could not reach him forbecause of the crowd |
| 8:20 |
And he was told Your mother and your brothers are standing outside desiringwanting to see you |
| 8:22 |
One day he got into a boat with his disciples and he said to them Let us go across to the other side of the lake So they setput out |
| 8:23 |
and aswhile they sailedwere sailing he fell asleep AndA awindstorm stormswept of wind came down on the lake and theythe wereboat was filling with water and they were in danger |
| 8:24 |
AndThey they went to him and woke him sayingup shouting Master Master we are perishing And he awokewoke up and rebuked the wind and the raging waves; and they ceased and there was a calm |
| 8:25 |
He said to them Where is your faith AndThey they were afraid and theyamazed marveledand sayingsaid to one another Who then is this that he commands even windthe winds and the water and they obey him |
| 8:26 |
Then they arrived at the country of the Ger′asenesGerasenes which is opposite Galilee |
| 8:27 |
AndAs as he stepped out on land there met him a man fromof the city who had demons; formet him For a long time he had worn no clothes and he liveddid not live in a house but amongin the tombs |
| 8:28 |
When he saw Jesus he cried out and fell down before him and saidshouted withat athe loudtop of his voice What have you to do with me Jesus Son of the Most High God I beseechbeg you do not torment me— |
| 8:29 |
Forfor heJesus had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man For many atimes time it had seized him; he was kept under guard and bound with chains and fettersshackles but he brokewould break the bonds and wasbe driven by the demon into the desertwilds |
| 8:30 |
Jesus then asked him What is your name AndHe he said Legion; for many demons had entered him |
| 8:31 |
AndThey they begged him not to commandorder them to departgo back into the abyss |
| 8:32 |
Now there on the hillside a large herd of swine was feeding; thereand on the hillside;demons and they begged himJesus to let them enter these So he gave them leavepermission |
| 8:33 |
Then the demons came out of the man and entered the swine and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and werewas drowned |
| 8:34 |
When the herdsmenswineherds saw what had happened they fledran off and told it in the city and in the country |
| 8:35 |
Then people wentcame out to see what had happened and when they came to Jesus andthey found the man from whom the demons had gone sitting at the feet of Jesus clothed and in his right mind; andAnd they were afraid |
| 8:36 |
AndThose those who had seen it told them how hethe one who had been possessed withby demons washad been healed |
| 8:37 |
Then all the people of the surrounding country of the Ger′asenesGerasenes asked himJesus to departleave from them; for they were seized with great fear; soSo he got into the boat and returned |
| 8:38 |
The man from whom the demons had gone begged that he might be with him; but heJesus sent him away saying |
| 8:39 |
Return to your home and declare how much God has done for you AndSo he went away proclaiming throughout the whole city how much Jesus had done for him |
| 8:41 |
AndJust then there came a man named Ja′irusJairus who was a rulerleader of the synagogue; andHe fallingfell at Jesus feet heand besoughtbegged him to come to his house |
| 8:42 |
for he had an only daughter about twelve years ofold agewho and she was dying As he went the peoplecrowds pressed roundin on him |
| 8:43 |
AndNow there was a woman who had hadbeen asuffering flowfrom ofhemorrhages blood for twelve years; and couldthough notshe behad healedspent byall anyshe had on physicians no one could cure her |
| 8:44 |
She came up behind him and touched the fringe of his garment;clothes and immediately her flowhemorrhage ofstopped blood ceased |
| 8:45 |
AndThen Jesus saidasked Who was it that touched me When all denied it Peter said Master the multitudescrowds surround you and press uponin on you |
| 8:46 |
But Jesus said SomeSomeone one touched me; for I perceivenoticed that power hashad gone forthout from me |
| 8:47 |
AndWhen when the woman saw that she wascould not remain hidden she came trembling; and falling down before him she declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched him and how she had been immediately healed |
| 8:48 |
AndHe he said to her Daughter your faith has made you well; go in peace |
| 8:49 |
While he was still speaking asomeone mancame from the rulersleaders house cameto andsay said Your daughter is dead; do not trouble the Teacherteacher any morelonger |
| 8:50 |
ButWhen Jesus onheard hearing this answeredhe himreplied Do not fear; onlyOnly believe and she shallwill be wellsaved |
| 8:51 |
AndWhen when he came to the house he permitteddid nonot oneallow anyone to enter with him except Peter and John and James and the childs father and mother of the child |
| 8:52 |
AndThey were all were weeping and bewailingwailing for her; but he said Do not weep; for she is not dead but sleeping |
| 8:54 |
But takinghe took her by the hand heand called sayingout Child ariseget up |
| 8:55 |
AndHer her spirit returned and she got up at once; andThen he directed thatthem somethingto shouldgive beher givensomething her to eat |
| 8:56 |
AndHer her parents were amazedastounded; but he chargedordered them to tell no one what had happened |
| 9:1 |
AndThen heJesus called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases |
| 9:2 |
and he sent them out to preachproclaim the kingdom of God and to heal |
| 9:3 |
AndHe he said to them Take nothing for your journey no staff nor bag nor bread nor money;—not andeven doan notextra havetunic two tunics |
| 9:4 |
AndWhatever whatever house you enter stay there and leave from there depart |
| 9:5 |
AndWherever wherever they do not receivewelcome you whenas you leaveare leaving that town shake off the dust fromoff your feet as a testimony against them |
| 9:6 |
AndThey they departed and went through the villages preachingbringing the gospelgood news and healingcuring diseases everywhere |
| 9:7 |
Now Herod the tetrarchruler heard ofabout all that washad donetaken place and he was perplexed because it was said by some that John had been raised from the dead |
| 9:8 |
by some that Eli′jahElijah had appeared and by others that one of the oldancient prophets had risenarisen |
| 9:9 |
Herod said John I beheaded; but who is this about whom I hear such things And he soughttried to see him |
| 9:10 |
On their return the apostles told himJesus whatall they had done AndHe he took them with him and withdrew apartprivately to a city called BethBethsaida sa′ida |
| 9:11 |
When the crowds learnedfound out about it they followed him; and he welcomed them and spoke to them ofabout the kingdom of God and curedhealed those who hadneeded needto ofbe healing cured |
| 9:12 |
NowThe the day beganwas drawing to weara away;close and the twelve came to him and said to him Send the crowd away toso that they may go into the surrounding villages and countrycountryside round about to lodge and get provisions; for we are here in a lonelydeserted place |
| 9:14 |
For there were about five thousand men And he said to his disciples Make them sit down in companiesgroups of about fifty each |
| 9:15 |
AndThey they did so and made them all sit down |
| 9:17 |
And all ate and were satisfiedfilled AndWhat theywas tookleft upover what was leftgathered overup twelve baskets of broken pieces |
| 9:18 |
NowOnce itwhen happenedJesus that as he was praying alone with only the disciples werenear with him; and he asked them Who do the peoplecrowds say that I am |
| 9:19 |
AndThey they answered John the Baptist; but others say Eli′jahElijah; and still others that one of the oldancient prophets has risenarisen |
| 9:20 |
AndHe he said to them But who do you say that I am And Peter answered The ChristMessiah of God |
| 9:21 |
ButHe hesternly chargedordered and commanded them not to tell thisanyone to no one |
| 9:22 |
saying The Son of manMan must sufferundergo manygreat thingssuffering and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes and be killed and on the third day be raised |
| 9:23 |
AndThen he said to them all If any manwant wouldto comebecome aftermy mefollowers let himthem deny himselfthemselves and take up histheir cross daily and follow me |
| 9:24 |
For whoeverthose wouldwho want to save histheir life will lose it; and whoeverthose loseswho hislose their life for my sake he will save it |
| 9:25 |
ForWhat what does it profit athem man if hethey gainsgain the whole world andbut loseslose or forfeitsforfeit himselfthemselves |
| 9:26 |
ForThose whoeverwho isare ashamed of me and of my words of himthem will the Son of manMan will be ashamed when he comes in his glory and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels |
| 9:27 |
But truly I tell you truly there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God |
| 9:28 |
Now about eight days after these sayings heJesus took with him Peter and John and James and went up on the mountain to pray |
| 9:29 |
And aswhile he was praying the appearance of his countenanceface waschanged altered and his raimentclothes became dazzling white |
| 9:30 |
AndSuddenly beholdthey saw two men talkedMoses withand himElijah Mosestalking andto Eli′jahhim |
| 9:31 |
whoThey appeared in glory and spokewere speaking of his departure which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem |
| 9:32 |
Now Peter and thosehis whocompanions were withweighed himdown were heavy with sleep; andbut whensince they wakenedhad stayed awake they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him |
| 9:33 |
AndJust as thethey men were partingleaving from him Peter said to Jesus Master it is wellgood thatfor weus areto be here; let us make three boothsdwellings one for you and one for Moses and one for Eli′jahElijah—not knowing what he said |
| 9:34 |
AsWhile he saidwas saying this a cloud came and overshadowed them; and they were afraidterrified as they entered the cloud |
| 9:35 |
AndThen afrom voicethe cloud came outa ofvoice thethat cloudsaid saying This is my Son my Chosen; listen to him |
| 9:36 |
AndWhen when the voice had spoken Jesus was found alone And they kept silencesilent and in those days told no one inany thoseof daysthe anythingthings of what they had seen |
| 9:38 |
AndJust beholdthen a man from the crowd criedshouted Teacher I beg you to look uponat my son; for he is my only child; |
| 9:39 |
andSuddenly behold a spirit seizes him and heall suddenlyat criesonce out;he itshrieks It convulses him tilluntil he foams andat shattersthe mouth; it mauls him and will hardlyscarcely leave him |
| 9:40 |
And I begged your disciples to cast it out but they could not |
| 9:41 |
Jesus answered OYou faithless and perverse generation how longmuch amlonger must I to be with you and bear with you Bring your son here |
| 9:42 |
While he was coming the demon toredashed him andto convulsedthe himground in convulsions But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit and healed the boy and gave him back to his father |
| 9:43 |
And all were astonishedastounded at the majestygreatness of God ButWhile whileeveryone theywas wereamazed at all marvelingthat athe everythingwas hedoing did he said to his disciples |
| 9:44 |
Let these words sink into your ears;: forThe the Son of manMan is going to be deliveredbetrayed into thehuman hands of men |
| 9:45 |
But they did not understand this saying; andits itmeaning was concealed from them so that they shouldcould not perceive it; andAnd they were afraid to ask him about this saying |
| 9:46 |
AndAn an argument arose among them as to which one of them was the greatest |
| 9:47 |
But when Jesus perceivedaware the thought of their heartsinner hethoughts took a little child and put himit by his side |
| 9:48 |
and said to them Whoever receiveswelcomes this child in my name receiveswelcomes me and whoever receiveswelcomes me receiveswelcomes himthe one who sent me; for hethe who is least among all of you all is the one who is greatgreatest |
| 9:49 |
John answered Master we saw asomeone man casting out demons in your name and we forbadetried to stop him because he does not follow with us |
| 9:50 |
But Jesus said to him Do not forbidstop him; for hewhoever that is not against you is for you |
| 9:51 |
When the days drew near for him to be receivedtaken up he set his face to go to Jerusalem |
| 9:52 |
And he sent messengers ahead of him whoOn wenttheir andway they entered a village of the Samaritans to make ready for him; |
| 9:53 |
but thethey peopledid would not receive him because his face was set toward Jerusalem |
| 9:54 |
AndWhen when his disciples James and John saw it they said Lord do you want us to bidcommand fire to come down from heaven and consume them |
| 9:56 |
AndThen they went on to another village |
| 9:57 |
As they were going along the road asomeone man said to him I will follow you wherever you go |
| 9:58 |
And Jesus said to him Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of manMan has nowhere to lay his head |
| 9:59 |
To another he said Follow me But he said Lord first let me first go and bury my father |
| 9:60 |
But heJesus said to him LeaveLet the dead to bury their own dead; but as for you go and proclaim the kingdom of God |
| 9:62 |
Jesus said to him No one who puts hisa hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God |
| 10:1 |
After this the Lord appointed seventy others and sent them on ahead of him twoin bypairs twoto into every town and place where he himself wasintended about to comego |
| 10:2 |
AndHe he said to them The harvest is plentiful but the laborers are few; pray therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest |
| 10:3 |
Go on your way; beholdSee I sendam sending you out aslike lambs ininto the midst of wolves |
| 10:4 |
Carry no purse no bag no sandals; and salutegreet no one on the road |
| 10:5 |
Whatever house you enter first say Peace be to this house |
| 10:6 |
And if aanyone sonis ofthere peacewho isshares therein peace your peace shallwill rest uponon himthat person; but if not it shallwill return to you |
| 10:7 |
AndRemain remain in the same house eating and drinking whatwhatever they provide for the laborer deserves histo wages;be dopaid Do not gomove about from house to house |
| 10:8 |
Whenever you enter a town and theyits receivepeople welcome you eat what is set before you; |
| 10:9 |
healcure the sick inwho itare there and say to them The kingdom of God has come near to you |
| 10:10 |
But whenever you enter a town and they do not receivewelcome you go out into its streets and say |
| 10:11 |
Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet we wipe off in protest against you; neverthelessYet know this: that the kingdom of God has come near |
| 10:12 |
I tell you on that day it shallwill be more tolerable on that day for Sodom than for that town |
| 10:13 |
Woe to you Chora′zinChorazin woeWoe to you BethBethsaida sa′idaFor for if the mightydeeds worksof power done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon they would have repented long ago sitting in sackcloth and ashes |
| 10:14 |
But at the judgment it shallwill be more tolerable in the judgment for Tyre and Sidon than for you |
| 10:15 |
And you Caper′naCapernaum um will you be exalted to heaven YouNo shallyou will be brought down to Hades |
| 10:16 |
HeWhoever wholistens hearsto you hearslistens to me and hewhoever who rejects you rejects me and hewhoever who rejects me rejects himthe one who sent me |
| 10:17 |
The seventy returned with joy saying Lord in your name even the demons aresubmit subject to us in your name |
| 10:18 |
AndHe he said to them I sawwatched Satan fall from heaven like lightninga fromflash heavenof lightning |
| 10:19 |
BeholdSee I have given you authority to tread uponon serpentssnakes and scorpions and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing shallwill hurt you |
| 10:20 |
Nevertheless do not rejoice inat this that the spirits aresubmit subject to you; but rejoice that your names are written in heaven |
| 10:21 |
InAt that same hour heJesus rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said I thank theeyou Father Lord of heaven and earth thatbecause thouyou hasthave hidden these things from the wise and understandingthe intelligent and have revealed them to babesinfants; yeayes Father for such was thyyour gracious will |
| 10:22 |
All things have been deliveredhanded over to me by my Father; and no one knows who the Son is except the Father or who the Father is except the Son and anyanyone one to whom the Son chooses to reveal him |
| 10:23 |
Then turning to the disciples heJesus said to them privately Blessed are the eyes whichthat see what you see |
| 10:24 |
For I tell you that many prophets and kings desired to see what you see andbut did not see it and to hear what you hear andbut did not hear it |
| 10:25 |
AndJust beholdthen a lawyer stood up to puttest himJesus toTeacher thehe testsaid saying Teacher what shallmust I do to inherit eternal life |
| 10:26 |
He said to him What is written in the law HowWhat do you read there |
| 10:27 |
AndHe he answered You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself |
| 10:28 |
And he said to him You have answeredgiven the right answer; do this and you will live |
| 10:29 |
But hewanting desiring to justify himself saidhe toasked Jesus And who is my neighbor |
| 10:30 |
Jesus replied A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho and he fell amonginto the hands of robbers who stripped him and beat him and departedwent away leaving him half dead |
| 10:33 |
But a Samaritan aswhile hetraveling journeyed came tonear where he washim; and when he saw him he hadwas compassionmoved with pity |
| 10:34 |
andHe went to him and boundbandaged up his wounds pouringhaving onpoured oil and wine; thenon them Then he setput him on his own beastanimal and brought him to an inn and took care of him |
| 10:35 |
AndThe the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper sayingand said Take care of him; and whateverwhen moreI youcome spendback I will repay you whenwhatever Imore comeyou backspend |
| 10:36 |
Which of these three do you think provedwas a neighbor to the man who fell amonginto the hands of the robbers |
| 10:37 |
He said The one who showed mercy on him Andmercy Jesus said to him Go and do likewise |
| 10:38 |
Now as they went on their way he entered a certain village; andwhere a woman named Martha receivedwelcomed him into her househome |
| 10:39 |
AndShe she had a sister callednamed Mary who sat at the Lords feet and listened to hiswhat teachinghe was saying |
| 10:40 |
But Martha was distracted withby muchher servingmany tasks; andso she wentcame to him and saidasked Lord do you not care that my sister has left me to servedo aloneall the work by myself Tell her then to help me |
| 10:41 |
But the Lord answered her Martha Martha you are anxiousworried and troubleddistracted aboutby many things; |
| 10:42 |
there is need of only one thing is needful Mary has chosen the goodbetter portionpart which shallwill not be taken away from her |
| 11:1 |
He was praying in a certain place and whenafter he ceasedhad finished one of his disciples said to him Lord teach us to pray as John taught his disciples |
| 11:2 |
AndHe he said to them When you pray say: Father hallowed be thyyour name ThyYour kingdom come |
| 11:3 |
Give us each day our daily bread; |
| 11:4 |
andAnd forgive us our sins for we ourselves forgive everyeveryone one who is indebted to us; andAnd leaddo not bring us notto intothe temptationtime of trial |
| 11:5 |
And he said to them WhichSuppose one of you who has a friend willand you go to him at midnight and say to him Friend lend me three loaves of bread; |
| 11:6 |
for a friend of mine has arrived on a journey and I have nothing to set before him; |
| 11:7 |
andAnd he willanswers answer from within Do not bother me; the door ishas nowalready shutbeen locked and my children are with me in bed; I cannot get up and give you anything |
| 11:8 |
I tell you even though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend yetat least because of his importunitypersistence he will riseget up and give him whatever he needs |
| 11:9 |
AndSo I tellsay to you Ask and it will be given you; seeksearch and you will find; knock and itthe door will be opened tofor you |
| 11:10 |
For everyeveryone one who asks receives and heeveryone who seekssearches finds and tofor himeveryone who knocks itthe door will be opened |
| 11:11 |
WhatIs fatherthere anyone among you who if hisyour sonchild asks for a fish will insteadgive of a fishsnake giveinstead himof a serpent;fish |
| 11:12 |
orOr if hethe child asks for an egg will give him a scorpion |
| 11:14 |
Now he was casting out a demon that was dumbmute; when the demon had gone out the dumbone manwho had been mute spoke and the peoplecrowds marveledwere amazed |
| 11:15 |
But some of them said He casts out demons by BeBeelzebul el′zebul the princeruler of the demons; |
| 11:16 |
whileOthers others to test him soughtkept demanding from him a sign from heaven |
| 11:17 |
But he knowingknew theirwhat thoughtsthey were thinking and said to them Every kingdom divided against itself isbecomes laida wastedesert and ahouse dividedfalls householdon fallshouse |
| 11:18 |
AndIf if Satan also is divided against himself how will his kingdom stand For—for you say that I cast out the demons by BeBeelzebul el′zebul |
| 11:19 |
AndNow if I cast out the demons by BeBeelzebul el′zebul by whom do your sonsexorcists cast them out Therefore they shallwill be your judges |
| 11:20 |
But if it is by the finger of God that I cast out the demons then the kingdom of God has come uponto you |
| 11:21 |
When a strong man fully armed guards his owncastle palace his goodsproperty areis insafe peace; |
| 11:22 |
butBut when one stronger than he assailsattacks him and overcomesoverpowers him he takes away his armor in which he trusted and divides his spoilplunder |
| 11:23 |
HeWhoever who is not with me is against me and hewhoever who does not gather with me scatters |
| 11:24 |
When the unclean spirit has gone out of a manperson heit passeswanders through waterless placesregions seekinglooking rest;for anda resting place but not finding noneany heit says I will return to my house from which I came |
| 11:25 |
AndWhen whenit he comes heit finds it swept and put in order |
| 11:26 |
Then heit goes and brings seven other spirits more evil than himselfitself and they enter and dwelllive there; and the last state of that manperson becomesis worse than the first |
| 11:27 |
AsWhile he saidwas saying this a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to him Blessed is the womb that bore you and the breasts that nursed you sucked |
| 11:28 |
But he said Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keepobey it |
| 11:29 |
When the crowds were increasing he began to say This generation is an evil generation; it seeksasks for a sign but no sign shallwill be given to it except the sign of Jonah |
| 11:30 |
For just as Jonah became a sign to the menpeople of Nin′evehNineveh so will the Son of manMan will be to this generation |
| 11:31 |
The queen of the South will ariserise at the judgment with the menpeople of this generation and condemn them; forbecause she came from the ends of the earth to hearlisten to the wisdom of Solomon and beholdsee something greater than Solomon is here |
| 11:32 |
The menpeople of Nin′evehNineveh will ariserise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; forbecause they repented at the preachingproclamation of Jonah and beholdsee something greater than Jonah is here |
| 11:33 |
No one after lighting a lamp puts it in a cellar or under a bushel but on athe standlampstand so that those who enter may see the light |
| 11:34 |
Your eye is the lamp of your body; whenIf your eye is soundhealthy your whole body is full of light; but whenif it is not soundhealthy your body is full of darkness |
| 11:35 |
Therefore beconsider carefulwhether lest the light in you beis not darkness |
| 11:36 |
If then your whole body is full of light havingwith no part darkof it in darkness it will be whollyas brightfull of light as when a lamp gives you light with its rays gives you light |
| 11:37 |
While he was speaking a Pharisee askedinvited him to dine with him; so he went in and sattook his place at the table |
| 11:38 |
The Pharisee was astonishedamazed to see that he did not first wash before dinner |
| 11:39 |
AndThen the Lord said to him Now you Pharisees cleanseclean the outside of the cup and of the dish but inside you are full of extortiongreed and wickedness |
| 11:40 |
You fools Did not hethe one who made the outside make the inside also |
| 11:41 |
ButSo give for alms those things whichthat are within; and beholdsee everything iswill be clean for you |
| 11:42 |
But woe to you Pharisees forFor you tithe mint and rue and everyherbs herbof all kinds and neglect justice and the love of God; it is these you ought to have donepracticed without neglecting the others |
| 11:43 |
Woe to you Pharisees forFor you love to have the best seat of honor in the synagogues and salutationsto be greeted with respect in the marketmarketplaces places |
| 11:44 |
Woe to you forFor you are like unmarked graves which are not seen and menpeople walk over them without knowingrealizing it |
| 11:45 |
One of the lawyers answered him Teacher inwhen sayingyou thissay these things you reproachinsult us alsotoo |
| 11:46 |
And he said Woe also to you lawyers alsoFor for you load menpeople with burdens hard to bear and you yourselves do not touchlift thea burdensfinger withto oneease ofthem your fingers |
| 11:47 |
Woe to you forFor you build the tombs of the prophets whom your fathersancestors killed |
| 11:48 |
So you are witnesses and consentapprove toof the deeds of your fathersancestors; for they killed them and you build their tombs |
| 11:50 |
so that this generation may be charged with the blood of all the prophets shed fromsince the foundation of the world may be required of this generation |
| 11:51 |
from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechari′ahZechariah who perished between the altar and the sanctuary Yes I tell you it shallwill be requiredcharged ofagainst this generation |
| 11:52 |
Woe to you lawyers forFor you have taken away the key of knowledge; you did not enter yourselves and you hindered those who were entering |
| 11:53 |
AsWhen he went awayoutside from there the scribes and the Pharisees began to pressbe very hostile toward him hard and to provokecross examine him toabout speak of many things |
| 11:54 |
lying in wait for him to catch athim in something he might say |
| 12:1 |
InMeanwhile the meantime when sothe manycrowd thousandsgathered ofby the multitudethousands hadso gathered together that they trodtrampled uponon one another he began to sayspeak first to his disciples first Beware of the leavenyeast of the Pharisees whichthat is their hypocrisy |
| 12:2 |
Nothing is covered up that will not be revealeduncovered orand hiddennothing secret that will not bebecome known |
| 12:3 |
Therefore whatever you have said in the dark shallwill be heard in the light and what you have whispered inbehind privateclosed roomsdoors shallwill be proclaimed uponfrom the housetops |
| 12:4 |
I tell you my friends do not fear those who kill the body and after that havecan nodo nothing more that they can do |
| 12:5 |
But I will warn you whom to fear: fear him who after he has killed has powerauthority to cast into hell; yesYes I tell you fear him |
| 12:6 |
Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies AndYet not one of them is forgotten beforein GodGods sight |
| 12:7 |
WhyBut even the hairs of your head are all numberedcounted FearDo not be afraid; you are of more value than many sparrows |
| 12:8 |
And I tell you everyeveryone one who acknowledges me before menothers the Son of manMan also will acknowledge before the angels of God; |
| 12:9 |
but hewhoever who denies me before menothers will be denied before the angels of God |
| 12:10 |
And everyeveryone one who speaks a word against the Son of manMan will be forgiven; but hewhoever who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven |
| 12:11 |
AndWhen when they bring you before the synagogues and the rulers and the authorities do not beworry anxiousabout how or what you are to answerdefend yourselves or what you are to say; |
| 12:12 |
for the Holy Spirit will teach you inat that very hour what you ought to say |
| 12:13 |
OneSomeone ofin the multitudecrowd said to him Teacher bidtell my brother to divide the family inheritance with me |
| 12:14 |
But he said to him ManFriend who madeset me to be a judge or dividerarbitrator over you |
| 12:15 |
And he said to them Take heedcare andBe bewareon ofyour guard against all covetousnesskinds of greed; for aones mans life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions |
| 12:16 |
AndThen he told them a parable: saying The land of a rich man broughtproduced forthabundantly plentifully; |
| 12:17 |
andAnd he thought to himself What shallshould I do for I have nowhereno place to store my crops |
| 12:18 |
AndThen he said I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build larger ones; and there I will store all my grain and my goods |
| 12:19 |
And I will say to my soul Soul you have ample goods laid up for many years; takerelax your ease eat drink be merry |
| 12:20 |
But God said to him FoolYou fool This very night your soullife is requiredbeing demanded of you; andAnd the things you have prepared whose will they be |
| 12:21 |
So it is hewith those who laysstore up treasuretreasures for himselfthemselves andbut isare not rich toward God |
| 12:22 |
AndHe he said to his disciples Therefore I tell you do not beworry anxious about your life what you shallwill eat noror about your body what you shallwill putwear on |
| 12:25 |
And whichcan any of you by beingworrying anxious can add a cubitsingle hour to hisyour span of life |
| 12:26 |
If then you are not able to do asso small a thing as that why aredo you anxiousworry about the rest |
| 12:27 |
Consider the lilies how they grow;: they neither toil nor spin; yet I tell you even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayedclothed like one of these |
| 12:28 |
But if God so clothes the grass of the field which is alive in the field today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven how much more will he clothe you—you O men of little faith |
| 12:29 |
And do not seekkeep striving for what you are to eat and what you are to drink norand bedo ofnot anxiouskeep mindworrying |
| 12:30 |
For allit is the nations of the world seekthat strive after all these things; and your Father knows that you need them |
| 12:31 |
Instead seekstrive for his kingdom and these things shallwill be yoursgiven to you as well |
| 12:32 |
FearDo not be afraid little flock for it is your Fathers good pleasure to give you the kingdom |
| 12:33 |
Sell your possessions and give alms; provideMake yourselvespurses withfor pursesyourselves that do not growwear oldout withan aunfailing treasure in theheaven heavens that does not fail where no thief approachescomes near and no moth destroys |
| 12:34 |
For where your treasure is there will your heart will be also |
| 12:35 |
LetBe yourdressed loinsfor beaction girded and have your lamps burninglit; |
| 12:36 |
and be like menthose who are waiting for their master to comereturn home from the marriagewedding feastbanquet so that they may open tothe door for him atas oncesoon whenas he comes and knocks |
| 12:37 |
Blessed are those servantsslaves whom the master finds awakealert when he comes; truly I saytell to you he will girdfasten himselfhis belt and have them sit atdown tableto eat and he will come and serve them |
| 12:38 |
If he comes induring the secondmiddle watchof the night or innear thedawn third and finds them so blessed are those servants slaves |
| 12:39 |
But know this: that if the householderowner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming he would not have leftlet his house to be broken into |
| 12:40 |
You also must be ready; for the Son of manMan is coming at an unexpected hour |
| 12:41 |
Peter said Lord are you telling this parable for us or for alleveryone |
| 12:42 |
And the Lord said Who then is the faithful and wiseprudent stewardmanager whom his master will setput overin charge of his householdslaves to give them their portionallowance of food at the proper time |
| 12:43 |
Blessed is that servantslave whom his master whenwill hefind comesat willwork findwhen sohe doingarrives |
| 12:44 |
Truly I saytell to you he will setput himthat overone in charge of all his possessions |
| 12:45 |
But if that servantslave says to himself My master is delayed in coming and if he begins to beat the menservantsother slaves men and thewomen maidservants and to eat and drink and get drunk |
| 12:46 |
the master of that servantslave will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour that he does not know and will punishcut him in pieces and put him with the unfaithful |
| 12:47 |
AndThat thatslave servant who knew what his mastersmaster willwanted but did not makeprepare readyhimself or actdo accordingwhat towas hiswanted will shall receive a severe beating |
| 12:48 |
But hethe one who did not know and did what deserved a beating shallwill receive a light beating EveryFrom oneeveryone to whom much ishas been given ofmuch him will much be required; and offrom himthe one to whom menmuch commithas muchbeen theyentrusted even more will demandbe the moredemanded |
| 12:49 |
I came to castbring fire uponto the earth; and wouldhow thatI wish it were already kindled |
| 12:50 |
I have a baptism with which to be baptized with; and howwhat stress I am constrainedunder until it is accomplishedcompleted |
| 12:51 |
Do you think that I have come to givebring peace onto the earth No I tell you but rather division; |
| 12:52 |
forFrom henceforthnow on five in one househousehold there will be five divided three against two and two against three; |
| 12:53 |
they will be divided: father against son and son against father mother against daughter and daughter against her mother mother in law against her daughter in law and daughter in law against her mother in law |
| 12:54 |
He also said to the multitudescrowds When you see a cloud rising in the west you immediately say atIt onceis Agoing showerto is comingrain; and so it happens |
| 12:56 |
You hypocrites You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky; but why do you not know how to interpret the present time |

ThereAt werethat somevery presenttime atthere thatwere verysome timepresent who told him ofabout the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices |
| 13:2 |
AndHe heasked answered them Do you think that because these Galileans suffered in this way they were worse sinners than all the other Galileans because they suffered thus |
| 13:3 |
No I tell you No; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish as they did |
| 13:4 |
Or those eighteen uponwho whomwere killed when the tower inof Silo′amSiloam fell andon killed them —do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others wholiving dwelt in Jerusalem |
| 13:5 |
No I tell you No; but unless you repent you will all likewiseperish perishjust as they did |
| 13:6 |
AndThen he told this parable: A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came seekinglooking for fruit on it and found none |
| 13:7 |
AndSo he said to the vinedressergardener LoSee thesehere For three years I have come seekinglooking for fruit on this fig tree and still I find none Cut it down; whyWhy should it usebe upwasting the groundsoil |
| 13:8 |
AndHe hereplied answeredSir himlet Let it alone sirfor thisone more year alsountil till I dig aboutaround it and put manure on manureit |
| 13:9 |
AndIf if it bears fruit next year well and good; but if not you can cut it down |
| 13:11 |
And just then there wasappeared a woman whowith had had a spirit ofthat infirmityhad crippled her for eighteen years; sheShe was bent over and couldwas notquite fullyunable straightento herselfstand up straight |
| 13:12 |
AndWhen when Jesus saw her he called her over and said to her Woman you are freedset free from your infirmityailment |

| 13:14 |
But the rulerleader of the synagogue indignant because Jesus had healedcured on the sabbath saidkept saying to the peoplecrowd There are six days on which work ought to be done; come on those days and be healedcured and not on the sabbath day |
| 13:15 |
ThenBut the Lord answered him and said You hypocrites Does not each of you on the sabbath untie his ox or his assdonkey from the manger and lead it away to watergive it water |
| 13:16 |
And ought not this woman a daughter of Abraham whom Satan bound for eighteen long years be loosedset free from this bondbondage on the sabbath day |
| 13:17 |
AsWhen he said this all his adversariesopponents were put to shame; and all the peopleentire rejoicedcrowd was rejoicing at all the gloriouswonderful things that werehe donewas by himdoing |
| 13:18 |
He said therefore What is the kingdom of God like And to what shallshould I compare it |
| 13:19 |
It is like a grain of mustard seed whichthat asomeone man took and sowed in histhe garden; and it grew and became a tree and the birds of the air made nests in its branches |
| 13:20 |
And again he said To what shallshould I compare the kingdom of God |
| 13:21 |
It is like leavenyeast whichthat a woman took and hidmixed in with three measures of flour tilluntil all of it was all leavened |

AndSomeone someasked one said to him Lord will thoseonly whoa arefew saved be fewsaved AndHe he said to them |
| 13:24 |
Strive to enter bythrough the narrow door; for many I tell you will seektry to enter and will not be able |
| 13:25 |
When once the householderowner of the house has risengot up and shut the door and you will begin to stand outside and to knock at the door saying Lord open to us Hethen in reply he will answersay to you I do not know where you come from |
| 13:26 |
Then you will begin to say We ate and drank inwith youryou presence and you taught in our streets |
| 13:27 |
But he will say I tell you I do not know where you come from; departgo away from me all you workersevildoers of iniquity |
| 13:28 |
There you will weepbe weeping and gnashgnashing yourof teeth when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God and you yourselves thrustthrown out |
| 13:29 |
AndThen menpeople will come from east and west and from north and south and sitwill ateat table in the kingdom of God |
| 13:30 |
AndIndeed behold some are last who will be first and some are first who will be last |
| 13:32 |
AndHe he said to them Go and tell that fox Beholdfor me Listen I castam casting out demons and performperforming cures today and tomorrow and on the third day I finish my coursework |
| 13:33 |
NeverthelessYet Itoday musttomorrow goand onthe mynext wayday todayI andmust tomorrowbe andon themy dayway following;because for it cannotis beimpossible thatfor a prophet shouldto perishbe awaykilled fromoutside of Jerusalem |
| 13:34 |
O Jerusalem Jerusalem killingthe city that kills the prophets and stoningstones those who are sent to youit How often wouldhave I havedesired gatheredto gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings and you wouldwere not willing |
| 13:35 |
BeholdSee your house is forsakenleft to you And I tell you you will not see me until the time comes when you say Blessed is hethe one who comes in the name of the Lord |
| 14:1 |
OneOn sabbathone occasion when heJesus wentwas going to dine at the house of a rulerleader whoof belongedthe Pharisees to eat a meal on the Phariseessabbath they were watching him closely |
| 14:2 |
AndJust beholdthen in front of him there was a man before him who had dropsy |
| 14:3 |
And Jesus spokeasked to the lawyers and Pharisees saying Is it lawful to healcure people on the sabbath or not |
| 14:4 |
But they were silent ThenSo heJesus took him and healed him and letsent him goaway |
| 14:5 |
AndThen he said to them WhichIf one of you havinghas a sonchild or an ox that has fallen into a well will you not immediately pull himit out on a sabbath day |
| 14:7 |
NowWhen he toldnoticed ahow parablethe toguests those who were invited when he marked how they chose the places of honor sayinghe totold them a parable |
| 14:8 |
When you are invited by anysomeone one to a marriagewedding feastbanquet do not sit down inat athe place of honor lestin acase someone more eminentdistinguished man than you behas been invited by himyour host; |
| 14:9 |
and hethe host who invited both of you bothmay will come and say to you Give placethis toperson thisyour manplace and then youin willdisgrace beginyou withwould shamestart to take the lowest place |
| 14:10 |
But when you are invited go and sit indown at the lowest place so that when your host comes he may say to you Friend gomove up higher; then you will be honored in the presence of all who sit at the table with you |
| 14:11 |
For everyall one who exaltsexalt himselfthemselves will be humbled and hethose who humbleshumble himselfthemselves will be exalted |
| 14:12 |
He said also to the manone who had invited him When you give a dinnerluncheon or a banquetdinner do not invite your friends or your brothers or your kinsmenrelatives or rich neighbors lestin case they alsomay invite you in return and you would be repaid |
| 14:13 |
But when you give a feastbanquet invite the poor the maimedcrippled the lame and the blind |
| 14:14 |
andAnd you will be blessed because they cannot repay you Youfor you will be repaid at the resurrection of the justrighteous |
| 14:15 |
WhenOne one of thosethe whodinner satguests aton tablehearing with him heard this he said to him Blessed is heanyone who shallwill eat bread in the kingdom of God |
| 14:16 |
ButThen heJesus said to him ASomeone man once gave a great banquetdinner and invited many; |
| 14:17 |
andAt at the time for the banquetdinner he sent his servantslave to say to those who had been invited Come; for alleverything is ready now ready |
| 14:18 |
But they all alike began to make excuses The first said to him I have bought a fieldpiece of land and I must go out and see it; Iplease prayaccept youmy haveregrets me excused |
| 14:19 |
AndAnother another said I have bought five yoke of oxen and I goam going to examinetry them out; Iplease prayaccept youmy haveregrets me excused |
| 14:20 |
AndAnother another said I have marriedjust abeen wifemarried and therefore I cannot come |
| 14:21 |
So the servantslave camereturned and reported this to his master Then the householderowner inof angerthe house became angry and said to his servantslave Go out quicklyat toonce into the streets and lanes of the citytown and bring in the poor andthe maimedcrippled andthe blind and the lame |
| 14:22 |
And the servantslave said Sir what you commandedordered has been done and still there is still room |
| 14:23 |
AndThen the master said to the servantslave Go out tointo the highwaysroads and hedgeslanes and compel people to come in so that my house may be filled |
| 14:24 |
For I tell you none of those men who were invited shallwill taste my banquetdinner |
| 14:25 |
Now greatlarge multitudescrowds accompaniedwere traveling with him; and he turned and said to them |
| 14:26 |
IfWhoever any one comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters yes and even his own life heitself cannot be my disciple |
| 14:27 |
Whoever does not bearcarry histhe own cross and comefollow after me cannot be my disciple |
| 14:28 |
For which of you desiringintending to build a tower does not first sit down and countestimate the cost to see whether he has enough to complete it |
| 14:29 |
Otherwise when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish all who see it will begin to mockridicule him |
| 14:30 |
saying This manfellow began to build and was not able to finish |
| 14:31 |
Or what king going out to encounterwage war against another king in war will not sit down first and takeconsider counsel whether he is able with ten thousand to meetoppose himthe one who comes against him with twenty thousand |
| 14:32 |
AndIf ifhe notcannot then while the other is yetstill afar greataway way off he sends ana embassydelegation and asks for the terms of peace |
| 14:33 |
So therefore whoevernone of you doescan notbecome renouncemy alldisciple thatif heyou hasdo cannotnot begive myup discipleall your possessions |
| 14:34 |
Salt is good; but if salt has lost its taste how shallcan its saltnesssaltiness be restored |
| 14:35 |
It is fit neither for the landsoil nor for the dunghillmanure pile; menthey throw it away HeLet whoanyone haswith ears to hear let him hearlisten |
| 15:1 |
Now all the tax collectors and sinners were allcoming drawing near to hearlisten to him |
| 15:2 |
And the Pharisees and the scribes murmuredwere grumbling and saying This manfellow receiveswelcomes sinners and eats with them |
| 15:4 |
WhatWhich manone of you having a hundred sheep ifand helosing has lost one of them does not leave the ninety nine in the wilderness and go after the one whichthat is lost until he finds it |
| 15:5 |
AndWhen when he has found it he lays it on his shoulders rejoicingand rejoices |
| 15:6 |
And when he comes home he calls together his friends and his neighbors saying to them Rejoice with me for I have found my sheep whichthat was lost |
| 15:8 |
Or what woman having ten silver coins if she loses one coinof them does not light a lamp and sweep the house and seeksearch diligentlycarefully until she finds it |
| 15:9 |
AndWhen when she has found it she calls together her friends and neighbors saying Rejoice with me for I have found the coin whichthat I had lost |
| 15:10 |
Just so I tell you there is joy beforein the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents |
| 15:11 |
AndThen heJesus said There was a man who had two sons; |
| 15:12 |
andThe the younger of them said to his father Father give me the share of the property that fallswill belong to me AndSo he divided his livingproperty between them |
| 15:13 |
NotA manyfew days later the younger son gathered all he had and tooktraveled histo journey into a fardistant country and there he squandered his property in loosedissolute living |
| 15:14 |
AndWhen when he had spent everything a greatsevere famine arosetook inplace throughout that country and he began to be in wantneed |
| 15:15 |
So he went and joinedhired himself out to one of the citizens of that country who sent him intoto his fields to feed swinethe pigs |
| 15:16 |
AndHe he would gladly have fedfilled onhimself with the pods that the swinepigs atewere eating; and no one gave him anything |
| 15:17 |
But when he came to himself he said How many of my fathers hired servantshands have bread enough and to spare but here I perisham heredying withof hunger |
| 15:18 |
I will ariseget up and go to my father and I will say to him Father I have sinned against heaven and before you; |
| 15:19 |
I am no longer worthy to be called your son; treat me aslike one of your hired servantshands |
| 15:20 |
AndSo he aroseset off and camewent to his father But while he was yetstill atfar aoff distance his father saw him and hadwas filled with compassion; andhe ran and embracedput his arms around him and kissed him |
| 15:21 |
AndThen the son said to him Father I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son |
| 15:22 |
But the father said to his servantsslaves BringQuickly quicklybring out a robe—the best robe one—and put it on him; and put a ring on his handfinger and shoessandals on his feet; |
| 15:23 |
andAnd bringget the fatted calf and kill it and let us eat and make merrycelebrate; |
| 15:24 |
for this my son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found And they began to make merrycelebrate |
| 15:25 |
Now his elder son was in the field; and aswhen he came and drewapproached near to the house he heard music and dancing |
| 15:26 |
AndHe he called one of the servantsslaves and asked what thiswas meantgoing on |
| 15:27 |
AndHe hereplied said to him Your brother has come and your father has killed the fatted calf because he has receivedgot him back safe and sound |
| 15:28 |
ButThen he wasbecame angry and refused to go in His father came out and entreatedbegan to plead with him |
| 15:29 |
butBut he answered his father LoListen For all these many years I have servedbeen working like a slave for you and I have never disobeyed your command; yet you have never gavegiven me even a kidyoung goat so that I might makecelebrate merry with my friends |
| 15:30 |
But when this son of yours came back who has devoured your livingproperty with harlotsprostitutes you killed for him the fatted calf for him |
| 15:31 |
AndThen hethe father said to him Son you are always with me and all that is mine is yours |
| 15:32 |
ItBut waswe fittinghad to makecelebrate merry and berejoice gladbecause for this your brother of yours was dead and ishas alivecome to life; he was lost and ishas been found |
| 16:1 |
HeThen alsoJesus said to the disciples There was a rich man who had a stewardmanager and charges were brought to him that this man was wastingsquandering his goodsproperty |
| 16:2 |
AndSo he calledsummoned him and said to him What is this that I hear about you TurnGive inme thean accountaccounting of your stewardshipmanagement forbecause you cancannot nobe longermy bemanager stewardany longer |
| 16:3 |
AndThen the stewardmanager said to himself What shallwill I do sincenow that my master is taking the stewardshipposition away from me I am not strong enough to dig and I am ashamed to beg |
| 16:4 |
I have decided what to do so that peoplewhen mayI receiveam medismissed intoas theirmanager housespeople whenmay Iwelcome amme putinto outtheir ofhomes the stewardship |
| 16:5 |
So summoning his masters debtors one by one he saidasked to the first How much do you owe my master |
| 16:6 |
He saidanswered A hundred measuresjugs of olive oil AndHe he said to him Take your bill and sit down quickly and writemake it fifty |
| 16:7 |
Then he saidasked to another And how much do you owe He saidreplied A hundred measurescontainers of wheat He said to him Take your bill and writemake it eighty |
| 16:8 |
TheAnd his master commended the dishonest stewardmanager forbecause hishe shrewdnesshad acted shrewdly; for the sonschildren of this worldage are more shrewd in dealing with their own generation than are the sonschildren of light |
| 16:9 |
And I tell you make friends for yourselves by means of unrighteousdishonest mammonwealth so that when it failsis gone they may receivewelcome you into the eternal habitationshomes |
| 16:10 |
HeWhoever who is faithful in a very little is faithful also in much; and hewhoever who is dishonest in a very little is dishonest also in much |
| 16:11 |
If then you have not been faithful inwith the unrighteousdishonest mammonwealth who will entrust to you the true riches |
| 16:12 |
And if you have not been faithful inwith thatwhat whichbelongs isto anothersanother who will give you thatwhat which is your own |
| 16:13 |
No servantslave can serve two masters; for eithera heslave will either hate the one and love the other or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other You cannot serve God and mammonwealth |
| 16:14 |
The Pharisees who were lovers of money heard all this and they scoffedridiculed at him |
| 16:15 |
ButSo he said to them You are those who justify yourselves beforein menthe sight of others; but God knows your hearts; for what is exaltedprized amongby menhuman beings is an abomination in the sight of God |
| 16:16 |
The law and the prophets were in effect until John came; since then the good news of the kingdom of God is preachedproclaimed and everyeveryone onetries entersto enter it violentlyby force |
| 16:17 |
But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for one dotstroke of a letter in the law to becomebe voiddropped |
| 16:18 |
EveryAnyone one who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery and hewhoever who marries a woman divorced from her husband commits adultery |
| 16:19 |
There was a rich man who was clotheddressed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day |
| 16:20 |
And at his gate lay a poor man named Laz′arusLazarus fullcovered ofwith sores |
| 16:21 |
who desiredlonged to besatisfy fedhis hunger with what fell from the rich mans table; moreovereven the dogs camewould come and lickedlick his sores |
| 16:22 |
The poor man died and was carried away by the angels to Abrahamsbe bosomwith Abraham The rich man also died and was buried; |
| 16:23 |
andIn in Hades where he was being intormented torment he liftedlooked up his eyes and saw Abraham far offaway andwith Laz′arusLazarus inby his bosomside |
| 16:24 |
AndHe he called out Father Abraham have mercy uponon me and send Laz′arusLazarus to dip the endtip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am in anguishagony in thisthese flameflames |
| 16:25 |
But Abraham said SonChild remember that youduring in your lifetime you received your good things and Laz′arusLazarus in like manner evil things; but now he is comforted here and you are in anguishagony |
| 16:26 |
AndBesides besides all this between usyou and youus a great chasm has been fixed inso order that those who wouldmight want to pass from here to you maycannot notdo beso able and noneno mayone can cross from there to us |
| 16:27 |
AndHe he said Then father I beg you father to send him to my fathers house— |
| 16:28 |
for I have five brothers so —that he may warn them lestso that they will not also come into this place of torment |
| 16:29 |
But Abraham saidreplied They have Moses and the prophets; letthey themshould hearlisten to them |
| 16:30 |
AndHe he said No father Abraham; but if somesomeone one goes to them from the dead they will repent |
| 16:31 |
He said to him If they do not hearlisten to Moses and the prophets neither will they be convinced even if somesomeone onerises should rise from the dead |
| 17:1 |
AndJesus he said to his disciples TemptationsOccasions tofor sinstumbling are surebound to come; but woe to himanyone by whom they come |
| 17:2 |
It would be better for himyou if a millstone were hung roundaround hisyour neck and heyou were castthrown into the sea than thatfor heyou shouldto cause one of these little ones to sinstumble |
| 17:3 |
TakeBe heedon toyour yourselves;guard ifIf youranother brotherdisciple sins you must rebuke himthe offender and if hethere repentsis repentance you must forgive him; |
| 17:4 |
andAnd if hethe same person sins against you seven times ina the day and turns back to you seven times and says I repent you must forgive him |
| 17:6 |
AndThe the Lord saidreplied If you had faith asthe asize grain of a mustard seed you could say to this sycaminemulberry tree Be rooteduprooted up and be planted in the sea and it would obey you |
| 17:7 |
WillWho anyamong one of you whowould hassay ato servantyour plowingslave orwho keepinghas sheepjust saycome toin himfrom whenplowing heor hastending comesheep in from the field Come here at once and sittake downyour place at the table |
| 17:8 |
WillWould heyou not rather say to him Prepare supper for me andput girdon yourselfyour apron and serve me tillwhile I eat and drink; andlater afterward you shallmay eat and drink |
| 17:9 |
DoesDo heyou thank the servantslave becausefor hedoing did what was commanded |
| 17:10 |
So you also when you have done all that isyou commandedwere youordered to do say We are unworthyworthless servantsslaves; we have done only done what waswe ourought dutyto have done |
| 17:11 |
On the way to Jerusalem heJesus was passinggoing alongthrough the region between Samar′iaSamaria and Galilee |
| 17:12 |
AndAs as he entered a village he was met by ten lepers whoapproached stoodhim atKeeping atheir distance |
| 17:13 |
andthey liftedcalled upout theirsaying voices and said Jesus Master have mercy on us |
| 17:14 |
When he saw them he said to them Go and show yourselves to the priests And as they went they were cleansedmade clean |
| 17:15 |
Then one of them when he saw that he was healed turned back praising God with a loud voice; |
| 17:16 |
andHe heprostrated fellhimself on his face at Jesus feet givingand thanked him thanksAnd Now he was a Samaritan |
| 17:17 |
Then said Jesus asked Were not ten cleansedmade Whereclean areBut the other nine where are they |
| 17:18 |
Was nonone oneof them found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner |
| 17:19 |
AndThen he said to him RiseGet up and go on your way; your faith has made you well |
| 17:20 |
BeingOnce Jesus was asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God was coming and he answered them The kingdom of God is not coming with signsthings tothat can be observed; |
| 17:21 |
nor will they say LoLook here it is or There forit beholdis For in fact the kingdom of God is inamong the midst of you |
| 17:22 |
AndThen he said to the disciples The days are coming when you will desirelong to see one of the days of the Son of manMan and you will not see it |
| 17:23 |
AndThey they will say to you LoLook there or LoLook here Do not go do not followset themoff in pursuit |
| 17:24 |
For as the lightning flashes and lights up the sky from one side to the other so will the Son of manMan be in his day |
| 17:25 |
But first he must sufferendure manymuch thingssuffering and be rejected by this generation |
| 17:26 |
AsJust as it was in the days of Noah so willtoo it will be in the days of the Son of manMan |
| 17:27 |
They atewere theyeating drankand theydrinking marriedand theymarrying wereand being given in marriage until the day when Noah entered the ark and the flood came and destroyed all of them all |
| 17:28 |
Likewise just as it was in the days of Lot—: they atewere theyeating drankand theydrinking boughtbuying theyand soldselling theyplanting plantedand theybuilding built |
| 17:29 |
but on the day whenthat Lot wentleft outSodom fromit Sodomrained fire and sulphursulfur rained from heaven and destroyed all of them all— |
| 17:30 |
so—it will it be like that on the day whenthat the Son of manMan is revealed |
| 17:31 |
On that day letanyone him who is on the housetop withwho hishas goodsbelongings in the house must not come down to take them away; and likewise letanyone him who is in the field must not turn back |
| 17:33 |
WhoeverThose seekswho try to gainmake histheir life secure will lose it but whoeverthose loseswho hislose their life will preservekeep it |
| 17:34 |
I tell you inon that night there will be two in one bed; one will be taken and the other left |
| 17:35 |
There will be two women grinding meal together; one will be taken and the other left |
| 17:37 |
AndThen they saidasked to him Where Lord He said to them Where the bodycorpse is there the eaglesvultures will be gathered togethergather |
| 18:1 |
AndThen heJesus told them a parable toabout thetheir effectneed thatto theypray ought always to pray and not to lose heart |
| 18:2 |
He said In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared God nor regardedhad man;respect for people |
| 18:3 |
andIn that city there was a widow in that city who kept coming to him and saying VindicateGrant me justice against my adversaryopponent |
| 18:4 |
For a while he refused; but afterwardlater he said to himself Though I neitherhave no fear of God norand regardno manrespect for anyone |
| 18:5 |
yet because this widow botherskeeps bothering me I will vindicategrant her orjustice so that she willmay not wear me out by hercontinually continual coming |
| 18:6 |
And the Lord said HearListen to what the unrighteousunjust judge says |
| 18:7 |
And will not God vindicategrant justice to his electchosen ones who cry to him day and night Will he delay long overin helping them |
| 18:8 |
I tell you he will vindicatequickly grant justice to them speedilyAnd Neverthelessyet when the Son of manMan comes will he find faith on earth |
| 18:9 |
He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous and despisedregarded others with contempt: |
| 18:10 |
Two men went up intoto the temple to pray one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector |
| 18:11 |
The Pharisee stoodstanding andby prayedhimself thuswas withpraying himselfthus God I thank theeyou that I am not like other menpeople: extortionersthieves unjustrogues adulterers or even like this tax collector |
| 18:12 |
I fast twice a week; I give tithesa tenth of all thatmy Iincome get |
| 18:13 |
But the tax collector standing far off would not even liftlook up his eyes to heaven but beatwas beating his breast and saying God be merciful to me a sinner |
| 18:14 |
I tell you this man went down to his househome justified rather than the other; for everyall one who exaltsexalt himselfthemselves will be humbled but heall who humbleshumble himselfthemselves will be exalted |
| 18:15 |
NowPeople they were bringing even infants to him that he might touch them; and when the disciples saw it they rebukedsternly ordered them not to do it |
| 18:16 |
But Jesus called for them toand himsaid saying Let the little children come to me and do not hinderstop them; for it is to such belongsas these that the kingdom of God belongs |
| 18:17 |
Truly I saytell to you whoever does not receive the kingdom of God likeas a little child shallwill notnever enter it |
| 18:18 |
AndA acertain ruler asked him Good Teacher what shallmust I do to inherit eternal life |
| 18:19 |
And Jesus said to him Why do you call me good No one is good but God alone |
| 18:20 |
You know the commandments: DoYou shall not commit adultery; DoYou shall not killmurder; DoYou shall not steal; DoYou shall not bear false witness; Honor your father and mother |
| 18:21 |
AndHe hereplied saidI Allhave thesekept Iall havethese observedsince from my youth |
| 18:22 |
AndWhen when Jesus heard itthis he said to him OneThere thingis you still lackone thing lacking Sell all that you haveown and distribute the money to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven; andthen come follow me |
| 18:23 |
But when he heard this he became sad; for he was very rich |
| 18:24 |
Jesus lookinglooked at him and said How hard it is for those who have richeswealth to enter the kingdom of God |
| 18:25 |
ForIndeed it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for asomeone who is rich man to enter the kingdom of God |
| 18:27 |
ButHe hereplied said What is impossible withfor menmortals is possible withfor God |
| 18:28 |
AndThen Peter said LoLook we have left our homes and followed you |
| 18:29 |
And he said to them Truly I saytell to you there is no manone who has left house or wife or brothers or parents or children for the sake of the kingdom of God |
| 18:30 |
who will not receiveget manifoldback very much more in this timeage and in the age to come eternal life |
| 18:31 |
AndThen takinghe took the twelve heaside and said to them BeholdSee we are going up to Jerusalem and everything that is written ofabout the Son of manMan by the prophets will be accomplished |
| 18:32 |
For he will be deliveredhanded over to the Gentiles; and he will be mocked and shamefullyinsulted treated and spitspat upon; |
| 18:33 |
After they willhave scourgeflogged him andthey will kill him and on the third day he will rise again |
| 18:34 |
But they understood nonenothing ofabout all these things; thisin sayingfact what he said was hidhidden from them and they did not grasp what was said |
| 18:35 |
As he drewapproached near to Jericho a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging; |
| 18:36 |
andWhen hearinghe heard a multitudecrowd going by he inquiredasked what thiswas meanthappening |
| 18:38 |
AndThen he criedshouted Jesus Son of David have mercy on me |
| 18:39 |
AndThose those who were in front rebukedsternly himordered telling him to be silentquiet; but he criedshouted outeven allmore theloudly more Son of David have mercy on me |
| 18:40 |
And Jesus stoppedstood still and commandedordered himthe man to be brought to him; and when he came near he asked him |
| 18:41 |
What do you want me to do for you He said Lord let me receivesee myagain sight |
| 18:42 |
And Jesus said to him Receive your sight; your faith has madesaved you well |
| 18:43 |
AndImmediately immediately he receivedregained his sight and followed him glorifying God; and all the people when they saw it gavepraised praise to God |
| 19:1 |
He entered Jericho and was passing through it |
| 19:2 |
AndA thereman was athere man named Zacchae′usZacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was rich |
| 19:3 |
AndHe hewas soughttrying to see who Jesus was but could not on account of the crowd he could not because he was smallshort ofin stature |
| 19:4 |
So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him forbecause he was going to pass that way |
| 19:5 |
AndWhen when Jesus came to the place he looked up and said to him Zacchae′usZacchaeus makehurry haste and come down; for I must stay at your house today |
| 19:6 |
So he madehurried hastedown and camewas downhappy andto receivedwelcome him joyfully |
| 19:7 |
AndAll whenwho they saw it theybegan allto murmuredgrumble and said He has gone in to be the guest of aone man who is a sinner |
| 19:8 |
AndZacchaeus Zacchae′us stood there and said to the Lord BeholdLook Lord the half of my goodspossessions Lord I will give to the poor; and if I have defrauded anyanyone one of anything I restorewill itpay fourfoldback four times as much |
| 19:9 |
AndThen Jesus said to him Today salvation has come to this house sincebecause he alsotoo is a son of Abraham |
| 19:10 |
For the Son of manMan came to seek out and to save the lost |
| 19:11 |
As they heardwere theselistening thingsto this he proceededwent on to tell a parable because he was near to Jerusalem and because they supposed that the kingdom of God was to appear immediately |
| 19:12 |
HeSo he said therefore A nobleman went intoto a fardistant country to receiveget aroyal kingdompower for himself and then return |
| 19:13 |
CallingHe summoned ten of his servantsslaves heand gave them ten pounds and said to them TradeDo business with these tilluntil I come back |
| 19:14 |
But histhe citizens of his country hated him and sent ana embassydelegation after him saying We do not want this man to reignrule over us |
| 19:15 |
When he returned having received theroyal kingdompower he commandedordered these servantsslaves to whom he had given the money to be calledsummoned toso him that he might knowfind out what they had gained by trading |
| 19:16 |
The first came beforeforward himand sayingsaid Lord your pound has made ten more pounds more |
| 19:17 |
AndHe he said to him Well done good servantslave Because you have been faithfultrustworthy in a very littlesmall youthing shalltake havecharge authorityof over ten cities |
| 19:18 |
AndThen the second came saying Lord your pound has made five pounds |
| 19:19 |
AndHe he said to him And you arerule to be over five cities |
| 19:20 |
Then anotherthe other came saying Lord here is your pound which I keptwrapped laidit awayup in a napkin;piece of cloth |
| 19:21 |
for I was afraid of you because you are a severeharsh man; you take up what you did not laydeposit down and reap what you did not sow |
| 19:22 |
He said to him I will condemnjudge you outby of your own mouthwords you wicked servantslave You knew did you that I was a severeharsh man taking up what I did not laydeposit down and reaping what I did not sow |
| 19:23 |
Why then did you not put my money into the bank andThen atwhen myI comingreturned I shouldcould have collected it with interest |
| 19:24 |
AndHe he said to thosethe whobystanders stood by Take the pound from him and give it to himthe one who has the ten pounds |
| 19:26 |
I tell you that to everyall onethose who hashave more will more be given; but from himthose who hashave notnothing even what hethey hashave will be taken away |
| 19:27 |
But as for these enemies of mine who did not want me to reignbe king over them —bring them here and slayslaughter them beforein memy presence |
| 19:28 |
AndAfter when he had said this he went on ahead going up to Jerusalem |
| 19:29 |
When he drewhad come near toBethphage Beth′phage and Bethany at the mountplace thatcalled isthe calledMount Olivetof Olives he sent two of the disciples |
| 19:30 |
saying Go into the village oppositeahead whereof onyou enteringand as you enter it you will find a colt tied onthere whicha nocolt onethat has evernever yetbeen sat;ridden untieUntie it and bring it here |
| 19:31 |
If anyanyone one asks you Why are you untying it youjust shall say this The Lord hasneeds need of it |
| 19:32 |
So those who were sent wentdeparted away and found it as he had told them |
| 19:33 |
AndAs as they were untying the colt its owners saidasked to them Why are you untying the colt |
| 19:34 |
AndThey they said The Lord hasneeds need of it |
| 19:35 |
AndThen they brought it to Jesus; and after throwing their garmentscloaks on the colt they set Jesus uponon it |
| 19:36 |
AndAs as he rode along theypeople spreadkept spreading their garmentscloaks on the road |
| 19:37 |
As he was now drawingapproaching nearthe atpath thedown descentfrom of the Mount of Olives the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the mightydeeds worksof power that they had seen |
| 19:38 |
saying Blessed is the Kingking who comes in the name of the Lord Peace in heaven and glory in the highest heaven |
| 19:39 |
AndSome some of the Pharisees in the multitudecrowd said to him Teacher rebukeorder your disciples to stop |
| 19:40 |
He answered I tell you if these were silent the very stones would cryshout out |
| 19:41 |
AndAs when he drewcame near and saw the city he wept over it |
| 19:42 |
saying WouldIf thatyou even today you knewhad only recognized on this day the things that make for peace But now they are hidhidden from your eyes |
| 19:43 |
ForIndeed the days shallwill come upon you when your enemies will castset up aramparts bankaround about you and surround you and hem you in on every side |
| 19:44 |
andThey dashwill crush you to the ground you and your children within you and they will not leave within you one stone upon another in you; because you did not knowrecognize the time of your visitation from God |
| 19:45 |
AndThen he entered the temple and began to drive out those who soldwere selling things there; |
| 19:46 |
sayingand tohe themsaid It is written My house shall be a house of prayer; but you have made it a den of robbers |
| 19:47 |
AndEvery day he was teaching daily in the temple The chief priests and the scribes and the principalleaders men of the people soughtkept looking for a way to destroykill him; |
| 19:48 |
but they did not find anything they could do for all the people hungwere uponspellbound hisby wordswhat they heard |
| 20:1 |
One day as he was teaching the people in the temple and preachingtelling the gospelgood news the chief priests and the scribes came with the elders came up |
| 20:2 |
and said to him Tell us by what authority are you dodoing these things orWho whois it iswho that gave you this authority |
| 20:3 |
He answered them I will also will ask you a question; nowand you tell me: |
| 20:4 |
WasDid the baptism of John come from heaven or fromwas menit of human origin |
| 20:5 |
AndThey they discussed it with one another saying If we say From heaven he will say Why did you not believe him |
| 20:6 |
But if we say FromOf menhuman origin all the people will stone us; for they are convinced that John was a prophet |
| 20:7 |
So they answered that they did not know whencewhere it wascame from |
| 20:8 |
AndThen Jesus said to them Neither will I tell you by what authority I doam doing these things |
| 20:9 |
AndHe he began to tell the people this parable: A man planted a vineyard and letleased it out to tenants and went intoto another country for a long whiletime |
| 20:10 |
When the timeseason came he sent a servantslave to the tenants in order that they shouldmight give him somehis share of the fruitproduce of the vineyard; but the tenants beat him and sent him away empty handed |
| 20:11 |
AndNext he sent another servantslave; himthat one also they beat and treatedinsulted shamefully and sent him away empty handed |
| 20:12 |
And he sent yetstill a third; this one also they wounded and castthrew out |
| 20:13 |
Then the owner of the vineyard said What shall I do I will send my beloved son; itperhaps may be they will respect him |
| 20:14 |
But when the tenants saw him they saiddiscussed toit among themselves and said This is the heir; let us kill him so that the inheritance may be ours |
| 20:15 |
AndSo they castthrew him out of the vineyard and killed him What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them |
| 20:16 |
He will come and destroy those tenants and give the vineyard to others When they heard this they said GodHeaven forbid |
| 20:17 |
But he looked at them and said What then isdoes this thattext is writtenmean: The very stone whichthat the builders rejected has become the head of the cornercornerstone |
| 20:18 |
EveryEveryone one who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces; butand when it fallswill crush anyone on anywhom one it willfalls crush him |
| 20:19 |
TheWhen the scribes and the chief priests triedrealized that he had told this parable against them they wanted to lay hands on him at that very hour but they feared the people; for they perceived that he had told this parable against them |
| 20:20 |
So they watched him and sent spies who pretended to be sincerehonest thatin theyorder mightto taketrap holdhim ofby what he said so as to deliverhand him upover to the authorityjurisdiction and jurisdictionauthority of the governor |
| 20:21 |
TheySo they asked him Teacher we know that you speakare right in what you say and teach rightly and you show deference to no partialityone but truly teach the way of God in accordance with truth |
| 20:22 |
Is it lawful for us to givepay tributetaxes to Caesarthe emperor or not |
| 20:24 |
Show me a coindenarius Whose likenesshead and inscriptionwhose hastitle does it bear They said CaesarsThe emperors |
| 20:25 |
He said to them Then rendergive to Caesarthe emperor the things that are Caesarsthe emperors and to God the things that are Gods |
| 20:26 |
And they were not able in the presence of the people to catchtrap him by what he said; butand marvelingbeing atamazed by his answer they werebecame silent |
| 20:27 |
ThereSome cameSadducees to him some Sad′ducees those who say that there is no resurrection came to him |
| 20:28 |
and they asked him a question saying Teacher Moses wrote for us that if a mans brother dies havingleaving a wife but no children the man mustshall takemarry the wifewidow and raise up children for his brother |
| 20:29 |
Now there were seven brothers; the first tookmarried a wife and died without childrenchildless; |
| 20:30 |
andthen the second |
| 20:31 |
and the third tookmarried her and likewiseso allin seventhe leftsame noway childrenall andseven died childless |
| 20:32 |
AfterwardFinally the woman also died |
| 20:33 |
In the resurrection therefore whose wife will the woman be For the seven had married her as wife |
| 20:34 |
And Jesus said to them TheThose sonswho ofbelong to this age marry and are given in marriage; |
| 20:35 |
but those who are accountedconsidered worthy toof attaina toplace in that age and toin the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage |
| 20:36 |
forIndeed they cannot die anyanymore more because they are equallike to angels and are sonschildren of God being sonschildren of the resurrection |
| 20:37 |
ButAnd the fact that the dead are raised even Moses himself showed in the passagestory about the bush where he callsspeaks of the Lord as the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob |
| 20:38 |
Now he is God not God of the dead but of the living; for to him all liveof tothem himare alive |
| 20:39 |
AndThen some of the scribes answered Teacher you have spoken well |
| 20:40 |
For they no longer dared to ask him anyanother question |
| 20:41 |
ButThen he said to them How can they say that the ChristMessiah is Davids son |
| 20:42 |
For David himself says in the Bookbook of Psalms The Lord said to my Lord Sit at my right hand |
| 20:43 |
tilluntil I make thyyour enemies ayour stoolfootstool for thy feet |
| 20:44 |
David thus calls him Lord; so how iscan he be his son |
| 20:45 |
AndIn in the hearing of all the people he said to histhe disciples |
| 20:46 |
Beware of the scribes who like to gowalk aboutaround in long robes and love salutationsto be greeted with respect in the marketmarketplaces places and to have the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at feastsbanquets |
| 20:47 |
whoThey devour widows houses and for athe pretensesake makeof appearance say long prayers They will receive the greater condemnation |
| 21:1 |
He looked up and saw the rich people putting their gifts into the treasury; |
| 21:2 |
and he also saw a poor widow put in two small copper coins |
| 21:3 |
AndHe he said Truly I tell you this poor widow has put in more than all of them; |
| 21:4 |
for they all of them have contributed out of their abundance but she out of her poverty has put in all theshe livinghad thatto shelive hadon |
| 21:5 |
AndWhen as some spokewere ofspeaking about the temple how it was adorned with noblebeautiful stones and offeringsgifts dedicated to God he said |
| 21:6 |
As for these things whichthat you see the days will come when therenot shallone notstone will be left here one stone upon another; thatall will not be thrown down |
| 21:7 |
AndThey they asked him Teacher when will this be and what will be the sign whenthat this is about to take place |
| 21:8 |
And he said TakeBeware heed that you are not led astray; for many will come in my name sayingand say I am he and The time is atnear hand Do not go after them |
| 21:9 |
AndWhen when you hear of wars and tumultsinsurrections do not be terrified; for thisthese things must first take place first but the end will not befollow atimmediately once |
| 21:11 |
there will be great earthquakes and in various places famines and pestilencesplagues; and there will be terrorsdreadful portents and great signs from heaven |
| 21:12 |
But before all this occurs they will layarrest their hands on you and persecute you; deliveringthey will hand you upover to the synagogues and prisons and you will be brought before kings and governors forbecause of my namesname sake |
| 21:13 |
This will begive ayou timean foropportunity you to beartestify testimony |
| 21:14 |
SettleSo itmake thereforeup in your minds not to meditateprepare beforehandyour howdefense toin answeradvance; |
| 21:15 |
for I will give you awords mouth and a wisdom whichthat none of your adversariesopponents will be able to withstand or contradict |
| 21:16 |
You will be deliveredbetrayed up even by parents and brothers andby kinsmenrelatives and friends; and they will put some of you they will put to death; |
| 21:17 |
youYou will be hated by all forbecause of my namesname sake |
| 21:19 |
By your endurance you will gain your livessouls |
| 21:20 |
ButWhen when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies then know that its desolation has come near |
| 21:21 |
Then let those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains and let those who are inside the city departmust andleave letit notand those who are out in the country must not enter it; |
| 21:22 |
for these are days of vengeance toas fulfila fulfillment of all that is written |
| 21:23 |
AlasWoe forto those who are withpregnant child and forto those who giveare sucknursing infants in those days For there will be great distress shallon be upon the earth and wrath uponagainst this people; |
| 21:24 |
they will fall by the edge of the sword and be ledtaken captiveaway as captives among all nations; and Jerusalem will be troddentrampled downon by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled |
| 21:25 |
AndThere there will be signs in the sun andthe moon and the stars and uponon the earth distress ofamong nations inconfused perplexityby at the roaring of the sea and the waves |
| 21:26 |
menPeople faintingwill withfaint from fear and with foreboding of what is coming onupon the world; for the powers of the heavens will be shaken |
| 21:27 |
AndThen then they will see the Son of manMan coming in a cloud with power and great glory |
| 21:28 |
Now when these things begin to take place lookstand up and raise your heads because your redemption is drawing near |
| 21:29 |
AndThen he told them a parable: Look at the fig tree and all the trees; |
| 21:30 |
as soon as they comesprout outleaves inyou leafcan you see for yourselves and know that the summer is already near |
| 21:32 |
Truly I saytell to you this generation will not pass away tilluntil all hasthings have taken place |
| 21:34 |
ButBe takeon heedguard toso yourselvesthat lest your hearts beare not weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and caresthe worries of this life and that day comecatch upon you suddenlyunexpectedly like a snare; |
| 21:35 |
forlike a trap For it will come upon all who dwelllive uponon the face of the whole earth |
| 21:36 |
ButBe watchalert at all times praying that you may have the strength to escape all these things that will take place and to stand before the Son of manMan |
| 21:37 |
AndEvery every day he was teaching in the temple butand at night he wentwould go out and lodgedspend the night on the mountMount of Olives as it was called Olivet |
| 21:38 |
And all the people would get up early in the morning allto thelisten people came to him in the temple to hear him |
| 22:1 |
Now the feastfestival of Unleavened Bread drew near which is called the Passover was near |
| 22:2 |
AndThe the chief priests and the scribes were seekinglooking howfor a way to put himJesus to death; for they fearedwere afraid of the people |
| 22:3 |
Then Satan entered into Judas called Iscariot who was ofone the number of the twelve; |
| 22:4 |
he went away and conferred with the chief priests and officers of the temple police about how he might betray him to them |
| 22:5 |
AndThey they were gladgreatly pleased and engagedagreed to give him money |
| 22:6 |
So he agreedconsented and soughtbegan to look for an opportunity to betray him to them inwhen theno absencecrowd ofwas the multitudepresent |
| 22:7 |
Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the passoverPassover lamb had to be sacrificed |
| 22:8 |
So Jesus sent Peter and John saying Go and prepare the passoverPassover meal for us that we may eat it |
| 22:9 |
They saidasked to him Where willdo you havewant us prepareto make preparations for it |
| 22:10 |
HeListen he said to them Behold when you have entered the city a man carrying a jar of water will meet you; follow him into the house which he enters |
| 22:11 |
and tellsay to the householderowner of the house The Teacherteacher saysasks to you Where is the guest room where I ammay to eat the passoverPassover with my disciples |
| 22:12 |
AndHe he will show you a large upper room upstairs already furnished; thereMake makepreparations readyfor us there |
| 22:13 |
AndSo they went and found iteverything as he had told them; and they prepared the passoverPassover meal |
| 22:14 |
AndWhen when the hour came he sattook his place at the table and the apostles with him |
| 22:15 |
AndHe he said to them I have earnestlyeagerly desired to eat this passoverPassover with you before I suffer; |
| 22:16 |
for I tell you I shallwill not eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God |
| 22:17 |
AndThen he took a cup and whenafter hegiving had given thanks he said Take this and divide it among yourselves; |
| 22:18 |
for I tell you that from now on I shallwill not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes |
| 22:19 |
AndThen he took a loaf of bread and when he had given thanks he broke it and gave it to them saying This is my body which is given for you Do this in remembrance of me |
| 22:20 |
And likewisehe did the same with the cup after supper saying This cup whichthat is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood |
| 22:21 |
But beholdsee the handone of him who betrays me is with me and his hand is on the table |
| 22:22 |
For the Son of manMan goesis going as it has been determined; but woe to that manone by whom he is betrayed |
| 22:23 |
AndThen they began to questionask one another which one of them it wascould thatbe who would do this |
| 22:24 |
A dispute also arose among them as to which one of them was to be regarded as the greatest |
| 22:25 |
AndBut he said to them The kings of the Gentiles exerciselord lordshipit over them; and those in authority over them are called benefactors |
| 22:26 |
But not so with you; rather let the greatest among you must become aslike the youngest and the leader aslike one who serves |
| 22:27 |
For whichwho is greater the greater one who sitsis at the table or the one who serves Is it not the one whoat sitsthe at table But I am among you as one who serves |
| 22:28 |
You are those who have continuedstood withby me in my trials; |
| 22:29 |
and I assignconfer toon you just as my Father assignedhas toconferred on me a kingdom |
| 22:30 |
so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and you will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel |
| 22:31 |
Simon Simon beholdlisten Satan has demanded to havesift youall thatof he might sift you like wheat |
| 22:32 |
but I have prayed for you that your own faith may not fail; and you when once you have turned againback strengthen your brethrenbrothers |
| 22:34 |
HeJesus said I tell you Peter the cock will not crow this day until you have denied three times deny that you know me |
| 22:35 |
AndHe he said to them When I sent you out withwithout noa purse or bag or sandals did you lack anything They said NothingNo not a thing |
| 22:36 |
He said to them But now letthe himone who has a purse must take it and likewise a bag And letthe himone who has no sword must sell his mantlecloak and buy one |
| 22:37 |
For I tell you that this scripture must be fulfilled in me And he was reckonedcounted withamong transgressorsthe lawless; forand indeed what is written about me hasis itsbeing fulfilmentfulfilled |
| 22:38 |
AndThey they said Look Lord look here are two swords AndHe hereplied said to them It is enough |
| 22:39 |
AndHe he came out and went as was his custom to the Mount of Olives; and the disciples followed him |
| 22:40 |
AndWhen when he camereached to the place he said to them Pray that you may not entercome into temptationthe time of trial |
| 22:41 |
AndThen he withdrew from them about a stones throw and knelt down and prayed |
| 22:42 |
Father if thouyou artare willing remove this cup from me; neverthelessyet not my will but thineyours be done [ |
| 22:45 |
AndWhen when he rosegot up from prayer he came to the disciples and found them sleeping forbecause sorrowof grief |
| 22:46 |
and he said to them Why doare you sleepsleeping RiseGet up and pray that you may not entercome into temptationthe time of trial |
| 22:47 |
While he was still speaking theresuddenly came a crowd came and the manone called Judas one of the twelve was leading them He drewapproached near to Jesus to kiss him; |
| 22:48 |
but Jesus said to him Judas wouldis it with a kiss that you betrayare betraying the Son of manMan with a kiss |
| 22:49 |
AndWhen when those who were aboutaround him saw what wouldwas followcoming they saidasked Lord shallshould we strike with the sword |
| 22:50 |
AndThen one of them struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his right ear |
| 22:52 |
Then Jesus said to the chief priests andthe officers of the temple police and the elders who had come outfor against him Have you come out as against a robber with swords and clubs as if I were a bandit |
| 22:54 |
Then they seized him and led him away bringing him into the high priests house But Peter followedwas following at a distance; |
| 22:55 |
andWhen when they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together Peter sat among them |
| 22:56 |
Then a maidservant girl seeing him as he sat in the lightfirelight andstared gazing at him and said This man also was with him |
| 22:58 |
AndA a little later somesomeone one else sawon seeing him and said You also are one of them But Peter said Man I am not |
| 22:59 |
AndThen after an interval of about an hour later still another insistedkept sayinginsisting CertainlySurely this man also was with him; for he is a Galilean |
| 22:60 |
But Peter said Man I do not know what you are sayingtalking Andabout immediatelyAt that moment while he was still speaking the cock crowed |
| 22:61 |
AndThe the Lord turned and looked at Peter AndThen Peter remembered the word of the Lord how he had said to him Before the cock crows today you will deny me three times |
| 22:63 |
Now the men who were holding Jesus mockedbegan to mock him and beat him; |
| 22:64 |
they also blindfolded him and askedkept asking him Prophesy Who is it that struck you |
| 22:65 |
AndThey theykept spokeheaping many other wordsinsults againston him reviling him |
| 22:66 |
When day came the assembly of the elders of the people gathered together both chief priests and scribes; gathered together and they ledbrought him away to their council and they said |
| 22:67 |
They said If you are the ChristMessiah tell us ButHe hereplied said to them If I tell you you will not believe; |
| 22:68 |
and if I askquestion you you will not answer |
| 22:69 |
But from now on the Son of manMan shallwill be seated at the right hand of the power of God |
| 22:70 |
AndAll theyof allthem saidasked Are you then the Son of God thenHe And he said to them You say that I am |
| 22:71 |
AndThen they said What further testimony do we need We have heard it ourselves from his own lips |
| 23:1 |
Then the wholeassembly companyrose ofas thema arosebody and brought himJesus before Pilate |
| 23:2 |
AndThey they began to accuse him saying We found this man perverting our nation and forbidding us to givepay tributetaxes to Caesarthe emperor and saying that he himself is Christthe Messiah a king |
| 23:3 |
AndThen Pilate asked him Are you the Kingking of the Jews AndHe he answered him You havesay said so |
| 23:4 |
AndThen Pilate said to the chief priests and the multitudescrowds I find no crimebasis infor an accusation against this man |
| 23:5 |
But they were urgentinsistent sayingand said He stirs up the people by teaching throughout all Judea from Galilee where he began even to this place |
| 23:7 |
And when he learned that he belongedwas tounder Herods jurisdiction he sent him overoff to Herod who was himself in Jerusalem at that time |
| 23:8 |
When Herod saw Jesus he was very glad for he had longbeen desiredwanting to see him for a long time because he had heard about him and he was hoping to see him perform some sign done by him |
| 23:9 |
SoHe he questioned him at some length; but heJesus madegave him no answer |
| 23:11 |
AndEven Herod with his soldiers treated him with contempt and mocked him; then arrayinghe himput inan gorgeouselegant apparelrobe heon him and sent him back to Pilate |
| 23:12 |
AndThat same day Herod and Pilate became friends with each other; that very day for before this they had been at enmity with each otherenemies |
| 23:13 |
Pilate then called together the chief priests and the rulersleaders and the people |
| 23:14 |
and said to them You brought me this man as one who was perverting the people; and afterhere examiningI have examined him beforein youyour beholdpresence Iand didhave not findfound this man guilty of any of your charges against him; |
| 23:15 |
neitherNeither didhas Herod for he sent him back to us BeholdIndeed nothinghe deservinghas deathdone hasnothing beento donedeserve bydeath him; |
| 23:16 |
I will therefore chastisehave him flogged and release him |
| 23:18 |
ButThen they all criedshouted out together Away with this manfellow andRelease releaseBarabbas tofor us Barab′bas— |
| 23:19 |
This was a man who had been thrownput intoin prison for an insurrection startedthat had taken place in the city and for murder |
| 23:20 |
Pilate addressedwanting themto oncerelease moreJesus desiringaddressed tothem release Jesusagain; |
| 23:21 |
but they shoutedkept outshouting Crucify crucify him |
| 23:22 |
A third time he said to them Why what evil has he done I have found in him no crimeground deservingfor the sentence of death; I will therefore chastisehave him flogged and then release him |
| 23:23 |
But they werekept urgenturgently demanding with loud criesshouts that he should be crucified; Andand their voices prevailed |
| 23:24 |
So Pilate gave sentencehis verdict that their demand should be granted |
| 23:25 |
He released the man they asked for the one who had been thrownput intoin prison for insurrection and murder whomand theyhe askedhanded for; but Jesus heover deliveredas upthey to their willwished |
| 23:26 |
AndAs as they led him away they seized onea man Simon of Cyre′neCyrene who was coming in from the country and they laid the cross on him theand crossmade tohim carry it behind Jesus |
| 23:27 |
AndA there followed him a great multitudenumber of the people followed him and ofamong them were women who bewailedwere beating their breasts and lamentedwailing for him |
| 23:28 |
But Jesus turningturned to them and said Daughters of Jerusalem do not weep for me but weep for yourselves and for your children |
| 23:29 |
For behold the days are surely coming when they will say Blessed are the barren and the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never gavenursed suck |
| 23:33 |
AndWhen when they came to the place whichthat is called The Skull there they crucified himJesus andthere with the criminals one on thehis right and one on thehis left [ |
| 23:34 |
AndThen Jesus said Father forgive them; for they knowdo not know what they doare doing] And they cast lots to divide his garmentsclothing |
| 23:35 |
And the people stood by watching; but the rulersleaders scoffed at him saying He saved others; let him save himself if he is the ChristMessiah of God his Chosenchosen Oneone |
| 23:36 |
The soldiers also mocked him coming up and offering him vinegarsour wine |
| 23:39 |
One of the criminals who were hanged railedthere atkept deriding him and saying Are you not the ChristMessiah Save yourself and us |
| 23:41 |
And we indeed have been condemned justly; for we are receivinggetting thewhat duewe rewarddeserve offor our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong |
| 23:42 |
AndThen he said Jesus remember me when you come into your kingdom |
| 23:43 |
AndHe hereplied said to him Truly I saytell to you today you will be with me in Paradise |
| 23:44 |
It was now about thenoon sixth hour and theredarkness wascame darkness over the whole land until three in the ninthafternoon hour |
| 23:46 |
Then Jesus crying with a loud voice said Father into thyyour hands I commitcommend my spirit AndHaving having said this he breathed his last |
| 23:47 |
NowWhen when the centurion saw what had taken place he praised God and said Certainly this man was innocent |
| 23:48 |
And when all the multitudescrowds who assembledhad togathered seethere thefor sightthis whenspectacle they saw what had taken place they returned home beating their breasts |
| 23:49 |
AndBut all his acquaintances andincluding the women who had followed him from Galilee stood at a distance andwatching saw these things |
| 23:50 |
Now there was a good and righteous man named Joseph fromwho thethough Jewish town of Arimathe′a He was a member of the council a good and righteous man |
| 23:51 |
who had not consentedagreed to their purposeplan and deedaction He came from the Jewish town of Arimathea and he was lookingwaiting expectantly for the kingdom of God |
| 23:53 |
Then he took it down and wrapped it in a linen shroudcloth and laid himit in a rock hewn tomb where no one had ever yet been laid |
| 23:55 |
The women who had come with him from Galilee followed and they saw the tomb and how his body was laid; |
| 23:56 |
thenThen they returned and prepared spices and ointments On the sabbath they rested according to the commandment |
| 24:1 |
But on the first day of the week at early dawn they wentcame to the tomb taking the spices whichthat they had prepared |
| 24:2 |
AndThey they found the stone rolled away from the tomb |
| 24:4 |
While they were perplexed about this beholdsuddenly two men stoodin bydazzling themclothes instood dazzlingbeside apparel;them |
| 24:5 |
andThe aswomen they were frightenedterrified and bowed their faces to the ground but the men said to them Why do you seeklook for the living among the dead He is not here but has risen |
| 24:7 |
that the Son of manMan must be deliveredhanded intoover theto handssinners of sinful men and be crucified and on the third day rise again |
| 24:8 |
AndThen they remembered his words |
| 24:10 |
Now it was Mary Mag′daleneMagdalene andJoanna Jo an′na and Mary the mother of James and the other women with them who told this to the apostles; |
| 24:11 |
butBut these words seemed to them an idle tale and they did not believe them |
| 24:13 |
ThatNow veryon that same day two of them were going to a village namedcalled Emma′usEmmaus about seven miles from Jerusalem |
| 24:15 |
While they were talking and discussing together Jesus himself drewcame near and went with them |
| 24:16 |
Butbut their eyes were kept from recognizing him |
| 24:17 |
And he said to them What isare this conversation which you arediscussing holding with each other aswhile you walk Andalong theyThey stood still looking sad |
| 24:18 |
Then one of them namedwhose Cle′opasname was Cleopas answered him Are you the only visitorstranger toin Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happenedtaken place there in these days |
| 24:19 |
AndHe heasked said to them What things AndThey theyreplied saidThe tothings himabout Concerning Jesus of Nazareth who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people |
| 24:20 |
and how our chief priests and rulersleaders deliveredhanded him upover to be condemned to death and crucified him |
| 24:21 |
But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel Yes and besides all this it is now the third day since thisthese happenedthings took place |
| 24:22 |
Moreover some women of our companygroup amazedastounded us They were at the tomb early inthis the morning |
| 24:23 |
and when they did not find his body; andthere they came back sayingand told us that they had evenindeed seen a vision of angels who said that he was alive |
| 24:24 |
Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said; but him they did not see him |
| 24:25 |
AndThen he said to them OOh how foolish menyou are and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spokendeclared |
| 24:26 |
Was it not necessary that the ChristMessiah should suffer these things and then enter into his glory |
| 24:27 |
AndThen beginning with Moses and all the prophets he interpreted to them the things about himself in all the scriptures the things concerning himself |
| 24:28 |
SoAs they drewcame near to the village to which they were going Hehe appearedwalked toahead beas if he were going furtheron |
| 24:29 |
butBut they constrainedurged him strongly saying Stay with us forbecause it is towardalmost evening and the day is now farnearly spentover So he went in to stay with them |
| 24:30 |
When he was at the table with them he took the bread and blessed and broke it and gave it to them |
| 24:31 |
AndThen their eyes were opened and they recognized him; and he vanished outfrom of their sight |
| 24:32 |
They said to each other DidWere not our hearts burnburning within us while he talkedwas talking to us on the road while he openedwas toopening us the scriptures to us |
| 24:33 |
AndThat theysame rosehour thatthey samegot hourup and returned to Jerusalem; and they found the eleven gathered together and thosetheir whocompanions weregathered withtogether them |
| 24:34 |
whoThey saidwere saying The Lord has risen indeed and he has appeared to Simon |
| 24:35 |
Then they told what had happened on the road and how he washad been made known to them in the breaking of the bread |
| 24:36 |
AsWhile they were sayingtalking about this Jesus himself stood among them and said to them Peace be with you |
| 24:37 |
ButThey they were startled and frightenedterrified and supposedthought that they sawwere seeing a spiritghost |
| 24:38 |
AndHe he said to them Why are you troubledfrightened and why do questioningsdoubts risearise in your hearts |
| 24:39 |
SeeLook at my hands and my feet; see that it is I myself; handleTouch me and see; for a spiritghost hasdoes not have flesh and bones as you see that I have |
| 24:41 |
AndWhile whilein theytheir stilljoy disbelievedthey forwere joydisbelieving and wonderedstill wondering he said to them Have you anything here to eat |
| 24:43 |
and he took it and ate beforein themtheir presence |
| 24:44 |
Then he said to them These are my words whichthat I spoke to you while I was still with you —that everything written about me in the law of Moses and the prophets and the psalms must be fulfilled |
| 24:46 |
and he said to them Thus it is written that the ChristMessiah shouldis to suffer and onto the third day rise from the dead on the third day |
| 24:47 |
and that repentance and forgiveness of sins shouldis to be preachedproclaimed in his name to all nations beginning from Jerusalem |
| 24:49 |
And beholdsee I sendam thesending promiseupon ofyou what my Father upon youpromised; butso stay here in the city until you arehave been clothed with power from on high |
| 24:51 |
While he blessedwas blessing them he partedwithdrew from them and was carried up into heaven |
| 24:52 |
And they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy; |
| 24:53 |
and they were continually in the temple blessing God |
