| 1:1 |
Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah the son of Amit′taiAmittai saying |
| 1:2 |
AriseGo goat once to Nin′evehNineveh that great city and cry out against it; for their wickedness has come up before me |
| 1:3 |
But Jonah roseset out to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord He went down to Joppa and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid thehis fare and went on board to go with them to Tarshish away from the presence of the Lord |
| 1:4 |
But the Lord hurled a great wind upon the sea and theresuch was a mighty tempeststorm oncame upon the sea so that the ship threatened to break up |
| 1:5 |
Then the mariners were afraid and each cried to his god; andThey they threw the warescargo that werewas in the ship into the sea to lighten it for them But Jonah meanwhile had gone down into the innerhold part of the ship and had lain down and was fast asleep |
| 1:6 |
SoThe the captain came and said to him What doare you meandoing yousound sleeperasleep AriseGet up call uponon your god Perhaps the god will givespare us a thought toso us that we do not perish |
| 1:7 |
AndThe theysailors said to one another Come let us cast lots so that we may know on whose account this evilcalamity has come upon us So they cast lots and the lot fell uponon Jonah |
| 1:8 |
Then they said to him Tell us onwhy whose account this evilcalamity has come upon us What is your occupation AndWhere whence do you come from What is your country And of what people are you |
| 1:9 |
And he said to them I am a Hebrew; andhe replied I fearworship the Lord the God of heaven who made the sea and the dry land |
| 1:10 |
Then the men were exceedinglyeven more afraid and said to him What is this that you have done For the men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of the Lord because he had told them so |
| 1:11 |
Then they said to him What shall we do to you that the sea may quiet down for us For the sea grewwas growing more and more tempestuous |
| 1:12 |
He said to them TakePick me up and throw me into the sea; then the sea will quiet down for you; for I know it is because of me that this great tempeststorm has come upon you |
| 1:13 |
Nevertheless the men rowed hard to bring the ship back to land but they could not for the sea grew more and more tempestuousstormy against them |
| 1:14 |
ThereforeThen they cried out to the Lord WePlease beseech thee O Lord we pray do not let us not perish foron account of this mans life andDo lay not onmake us guilty of innocent blood; for thouyou O Lord hasthave done as it pleased theeyou |
| 1:15 |
So they tookpicked Jonah up Jonah and threw him into the sea; and the sea ceased from its raging |
| 1:16 |
Then the men feared the Lord exceedinglyeven more and they offered a sacrifice to the Lord and made vows |
| 1:17 |
AndBut the Lord appointedprovided a greatlarge fish to swallow up Jonah; and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights |
| 2:2 |
saying I called to the Lord out of my distress and he answered me; out of the belly of Sheol I cried and thouyou didstheard hear my voice |
| 2:3 |
ForYou thou didst cast me into the deep into the heart of the seas and the flood wassurrounded round about me; all thyyour waves and thyyour billows passed over me |
| 2:4 |
Then I said I am castdriven outaway from thyyour presencesight; how shall I look again look upon thyyour holy temple |
| 2:5 |
The waters closed in over me; the deep wassurrounded round about me; weeds were wrapped aboutaround my head |
| 2:6 |
at the roots of the mountains I went down to the land whose bars closed upon me for everforever; yet thouyou didstbrought bring up my life from the Pit O Lord my God |
| 2:7 |
WhenAs my soullife faintedwas withinebbing meaway I remembered the Lord; and my prayer came to theeyou into thyyour holy temple |
| 2:8 |
Those who payworship regard to vain idols forsake their true loyalty |
| 2:9 |
But I with the voice of thanksgiving will sacrifice to theeyou; what I have vowed I will pay Deliverance belongs to the Lord |
| 2:10 |
AndThen the Lord spoke to the fish and it vomitedspewed Jonah out Jonah upon the dry land |
| 3:1 |
ThenThe the word of the Lord came to Jonah thea second time saying |
| 3:2 |
AriseGet up go to Nin′evehNineveh that great city and proclaim to it the message that I tell you |
| 3:3 |
So Jonah aroseset out and went to Nin′evehNineveh according to the word of the Lord Now Nin′evehNineveh was an exceedingly greatlarge city a three days journeywalk inacross breadth |
| 3:4 |
Jonah began to go into the city going a days journeywalk And he cried Yetout fortyForty days more and Nin′evehNineveh shall be overthrown |
| 3:5 |
And the people of Nin′evehNineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast and puteveryone ongreat sackclothand fromsmall theput greateston of them to the least of themsackcloth |
| 3:6 |
ThenWhen tidingsthe news reached the king of Nin′evehNineveh and he aroserose from his throne removed his robe and covered himself with sackcloth and sat in ashes |
| 3:7 |
AndThen he madehad a proclamation andmade publishedin throughNineveh: Nin′eveh By the decree of the king and his nobles: LetNo neitherhuman manbeing noror beastanimal no herd noror flock shall taste anything; letThey themshall not feed ornor shall they drink water |
| 3:8 |
butHuman letbeings man and beastanimals shall be covered with sackcloth and letthey themshall cry mightily to God; yeaAll letshall every one turn from histheir evil wayways and from the violence whichthat is in histheir hands |
| 3:9 |
Who knows God may yetrelent repent and change his mind; he may turn from his fierce anger so that we perishdo not perish |
| 3:10 |
When God saw what they did how they turned from their evil wayways God repentedchanged ofhis mind about the evilcalamity whichthat he had said he would dobring toupon them; and he did not do it |
| 4:1 |
But itthis displeasedwas very displeasing to Jonah exceedingly and he wasbecame angry |
| 4:2 |
AndHe he prayed to the Lord and said IO pray thee Lord isIs not this what I said whenwhile I was yetstill in my own country That is why I madefled haste to fleeTarshish toat Tarshishthe beginning; for I knew that thouyou artare a gracious God and merciful slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and repentestready ofto evilrelent from punishing |
| 4:3 |
ThereforeAnd now O Lord please take my life from me I beseech thee for it is better for me to die than to live |
| 4:4 |
And the Lord said DoIs youit doright wellfor you to be angry |
| 4:5 |
Then Jonah went out of the city and sat todown the east of the city and made a booth for himself there He sat under it in the shade tillwaiting heto should see what would become of the city |
| 4:6 |
AndThe the Lord God appointed a plantbush and made it come up over Jonah thatto itgive might be a shade over his head to save him from his discomfort; Soso Jonah was exceedinglyvery gladhappy becauseabout of the plantbush |
| 4:7 |
But when dawn came up the next day God appointed a worm whichthat attacked the plantbush so that it withered |
| 4:8 |
When the sun rose God appointedprepared a sultry east wind and the sun beat upondown on the head of Jonah so that he was faint; and he asked that he might die andHe said It is better for me to die than to live |
| 4:9 |
But God said to Jonah DoIs youit doright wellfor you to be angry forabout the plantbush And he said IYes do well to be angry angry enough to die |
| 4:10 |
AndThen the Lord said You pityare concerned about the plantbush for which you did not labor norand didwhich you makedid itnot grow; whichit came into being in a night and perished in a night |
| 4:11 |
And should I not Ibe pityconcerned Nin′evehabout Nineveh that great city in which there are more than a hundred and twenty thousand persons who do not know their right hand from their left and also muchmany cattleanimals |
