| 1:2 |
He was in the beginning with God; |
| 1:3 |
allAll things werecame madeinto being through him and without him was not anythingone madething thatcame wasinto madebeing What has come into being |
| 1:4 |
Inin him was life and the life was the light of menall people |
| 1:5 |
The light shines in the darkness and the darkness hasdid not overcome it |
| 1:7 |
He came foras testimonya witness to beartestify witness to the light so that all might believe through him |
| 1:8 |
He himself was not the light but he came to beartestify witness to the light |
| 1:9 |
The true light thatwhich enlightens everyeveryone man was coming into the world |
| 1:10 |
He was in the world and the world wascame madeinto being through him; yet the world knewdid not know him not |
| 1:11 |
He came to what was his own home and his own people receiveddid not accept him not |
| 1:12 |
But to all who received him who believed in his name he gave power to become children of God; |
| 1:13 |
who were born not of blood noror of the will of the flesh noror of the will of man but of God |
| 1:14 |
And the Word became flesh and dweltlived among us full of grace and truth; we have beheldseen his glory the glory as of thea fathers only Sonson fromfull theof Fathergrace and truth |
| 1:15 |
John boretestified witness to him and cried out This was he of whom I said He who comes after me ranks beforeahead of me forbecause he was before me |
| 1:16 |
AndFrom from his fulnessfullness we have we all received grace upon grace |
| 1:17 |
ForThe the law indeed was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ |
| 1:18 |
No one has ever seen God; It is God the only Son who is inclose to the bosomFathers ofheart thewho Father he has made him known |
| 1:19 |
AndThis this is the testimony ofgiven by John when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him Who are you |
| 1:20 |
He confessed heand did not deny it but confessed I am not the ChristMessiah |
| 1:21 |
And they asked him What then Are you Eli′jahElijah He said I am not Are you the prophet AndHe he answered No |
| 1:22 |
TheyThen they said to him then Who are you Let us have an answer for those who sent us What do you say about yourself |
| 1:23 |
He said I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness Make straight the way of the Lord as the prophet Isaiah said |
| 1:25 |
They asked him ThenWhy whythen are you baptizing if you are neither the ChristMessiah nor Eli′jahElijah nor the prophet |
| 1:26 |
John answered them I baptize with water; butAmong among you stands one whom you do not know |
| 1:27 |
eventhe heone who comesis coming after me; the thong of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandal |
| 1:28 |
This took place in Bethany beyondacross the Jordan where John was baptizing |
| 1:29 |
The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him and saiddeclared BeholdHere is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world |
| 1:30 |
This is he of whom I said After me comes a man who ranks beforeahead of me forbecause he was before me |
| 1:31 |
I myself did not know him; but for this I came baptizing with water for this reason that he might be revealed to Israel |
| 1:32 |
And John boretestified witness I saw the Spirit descenddescending asfrom heaven like a dove from heaven and it remained on him |
| 1:33 |
I myself did not know him; but hethe one who sent me to baptize with water said to me He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain this is hethe one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit |
| 1:34 |
And I myself have seen and have bornetestified witness that this is the Son of God |
| 1:35 |
The next day John again John was standing with two of his disciples; |
| 1:36 |
and as he lookedwatched at Jesus aswalk by he walkedexclaimed andLook saidhere Beholdis the Lamb of God |
| 1:38 |
When Jesus turned and saw them following andhe said to them What doare you seeklooking Andfor theyThey said to him Rabbi which translated means Teacher where are you staying |
| 1:39 |
He said to them Come and see They came and saw where he was staying; and they stayedremained with him that day forIt it was about four oclock in the tenthafternoon hour |
| 1:41 |
He first found his brother Simon and said to him We have found the Messiah which meansis Christtranslated Anointed |
| 1:42 |
He brought himSimon to Jesus Jesuswho looked at him and said SoYou you are Simon the son of John You shallare to be called Cephas which meansis translated Peter |
| 1:43 |
The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee AndHe he found Philip and said to him Follow me |
| 1:44 |
Now Philip was from BethBethsaida sa′ida the city of Andrew and Peter |
| 1:45 |
Philip found Nathan′aNathanael el and said to him We have found him ofabout whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote Jesus of Nazareth the son of Joseph from Nazareth |
| 1:46 |
Nathan′aNathanael el said to him Can anything good come out of Nazareth Philip said to him Come and see |
| 1:47 |
When Jesus saw Nathan′aNathanael el coming totoward him andhe said of him BeholdHere is truly an Israelite indeed in whom there is no guiledeceit |
| 1:48 |
Nathan′aNathanael elasked said to him HowWhere dodid you get to know me Jesus answered himI Beforesaw Philip called you when you were under the fig tree Ibefore sawPhilip called you |
| 1:49 |
Nathan′aNathanael elreplied answered him Rabbi you are the Son of God You are the King of Israel |
| 1:50 |
Jesus answered himDo Becauseyou believe because I saidtold to you that I saw you under the fig tree do you believe You shallwill see greater things than these |
| 1:51 |
And he said to him TrulyVery truly I saytell to you you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of manMan |
| 2:1 |
On the third day there was a marriagewedding atin Cana inof Galilee and the mother of Jesus was there; |
| 2:2 |
Jesus and his disciples had also wasbeen invited to the marriagewedding with his disciples |
| 2:4 |
And Jesus said to her OWoman woman what haveconcern youis that to doyou withand to me My hour has not yet come |
| 2:6 |
Now standing there were six stone water jars were standing there for the Jewish rites of purification each holding twenty or thirty gallons |
| 2:8 |
He said to them Now draw some out and take it to the chief steward of the feast So they took it |
| 2:9 |
When the steward of the feast tasted the water nowthat had become wine and did not know where it came from though the servants who had drawn the water knew the steward of the feast called the bridegroom |
| 2:10 |
and said to him EveryEveryone man serves the good wine first; and whenthen menthe haveinferior drunkwine freelyafter then the poorguests wine;have butbecome drunk But you have kept the good wine until now |
| 2:11 |
ThisJesus did this the first of his signs Jesusin did at Cana inof Galilee and manifestedrevealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him |
| 2:12 |
After this he went down to Caper′naCapernaum um with his mother and his brothers and his disciples; and there they stayedremained forthere a few days |
| 2:13 |
The Passover of the Jews was atnear hand and Jesus went up to Jerusalem |
| 2:14 |
In the temple he found thosepeople who were selling oxencattle and sheep and pigeonsdoves and the money changers seated at their businesstables |
| 2:15 |
AndMaking making a whip of cords he drove all of them allout withof the sheeptemple andboth oxenthe outsheep ofand the temple;cattle andHe healso poured out the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables |
| 2:16 |
AndHe he told those who soldwere selling the pigeonsdoves Take these things away;out youof shallhere notStop makemaking my Fathers house a housemarketplace of trade |
| 2:17 |
His disciples remembered that it was written Zeal for thyyour house will consume me |
| 2:18 |
The Jews then said to him What sign havecan you to show us for doing this |
| 2:20 |
The Jews then said ItThis temple has takenbeen under construction for forty six years to build this temple and will you raise it up in three days |
| 2:21 |
But he spokewas speaking of the temple of his body |
| 2:22 |
WhenAfter therefore he was raised from the dead his disciples remembered that he had said this; and they believed the scripture and the word whichthat Jesus had spoken |
| 2:23 |
NowWhen when he was in Jerusalem atduring the Passover feastfestival many believed in his name whenbecause they saw the signs whichthat he did;was doing |
| 2:24 |
butBut Jesus didon his part would not trustentrust himself to them because he knew all people |
| 2:25 |
because he knew all men and needed no one to beartestify witnessabout of mananyone; for he himself knew what was in maneveryone |
| 3:1 |
Now there was a manPharisee of the Pharisees named Nicode′musNicodemus a rulerleader of the Jews |
| 3:2 |
ThisHe man came to Jesus by night and said to him Rabbi we know that you are a teacher who has come from God; for no one can do these signs that you do unlessapart Godfrom isthe withpresence himof God |
| 3:3 |
Jesus answered him TrulyVery truly I saytell to you unlessno one iscan born anew he cannot see the kingdom of God without being born from above |
| 3:4 |
Nicode′musNicodemus said to him How can aanyone man be born whenafter hehaving isgrown old Can heone enter a second time into histhe mothers womb and be born |
| 3:5 |
Jesus answered TrulyVery truly I saytell to you unlessno one iscan bornenter ofthe waterkingdom andof theGod Spiritwithout hebeing cannotborn enterof thewater kingdomand ofSpirit God |
| 3:6 |
ThatWhat which is born of the flesh is flesh and thatwhat which is born of the Spirit is spirit |
| 3:7 |
Do not marvelbe astonished that I said to you You must be born anewfrom above |
| 3:8 |
The wind blows where it willschooses and you hear the sound of it but you do not know whencewhere it comes from or whitherwhere it goes; soSo it is with everyeveryone one who is born of the Spirit |
| 3:9 |
Nicode′musNicodemus said to him How can thisthese things be |
| 3:10 |
Jesus answered him Are you a teacher of Israel and yet you do not understand thisthese things |
| 3:11 |
TrulyVery truly I saytell to you we speak of what we know and beartestify witness to what we have seen; butyet you do not receive our testimony |
| 3:12 |
If I have told you about earthly things and you do not believe how can you believe if I tell you about heavenly things |
| 3:13 |
No one has ascended into heaven butexcept hethe one who descended from heaven the Son of manMan |
| 3:14 |
And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness so must the Son of manMan be lifted up |
| 3:16 |
For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son so that whoevereveryone who believes in him shouldmay not perish but may have eternal life |
| 3:17 |
ForIndeed God sentdid not send the Son into the world not to condemn the world but in order that the world might be saved through him |
| 3:18 |
HeThose who believesbelieve in him isare not condemned; hebut those who doesdo not believe isare condemned already because hethey hashave not believed in the name of the only Son of God |
| 3:19 |
And this is the judgment that the light has come into the world and menpeople loved darkness rather than light because their deeds were evil |
| 3:20 |
For everyall one who doesdo evil hateshate the light and doesdo not come to the light lestso histhat their deeds shouldmay not be exposed |
| 3:21 |
But hethose who doesdo what is true comescome to the light so that it may be clearly seen that histheir deeds have been wroughtdone in God |
| 3:22 |
After this Jesus and his disciples went into the landJudean ofcountryside Judea;and there he remainedspent some time there with them and baptized |
| 3:23 |
John also was baptizing at Ae′nonAenon near Salim because therewater was muchabundant water there; and people camekept coming and were being baptized |
| 3:24 |
For —John of course had not yet been putthrown ininto prison |
| 3:25 |
Now a discussion about purification arose between Johns disciples and a Jew over purifying |
| 3:26 |
AndThey they came to John and said to him Rabbi hethe one who was with you beyondacross the Jordan to whom you boretestified witness here he is baptizing and all are going to him |
| 3:27 |
John answered No one can receive anything except what ishas been given him from heaven |
| 3:28 |
You yourselves bearare memy witnesswitnesses that I said I am not the ChristMessiah but I have been sent beforeahead of him |
| 3:29 |
He who has the bride is the bridegroom; theThe friend of the bridegroom who stands and hears him rejoices greatly at the bridegrooms voice; thereforeFor this joyreason ofmy minejoy ishas nowbeen fullfulfilled |
| 3:31 |
HeThe one who comes from above is above all; hethe one who is of the earth belongs to the earth and ofspeaks theabout earthearthly hethings speaks; The heone who comes from heaven is above all |
| 3:32 |
He bearstestifies witness to what he has seen and heard yet no one receivesaccepts his testimony; |
| 3:33 |
heWhoever whohas receivesaccepted his testimony setshas hiscertified seal to this that God is true |
| 3:34 |
ForHe he whom God has sent uttersspeaks the words of God for it is not by measure that he gives the Spirit; without measure |
| 3:35 |
theThe Father loves the Son and has givenplaced all things intoin his handhands |
| 3:36 |
HeWhoever who believes in the Son has eternal life; hewhoever whodisobeys does not obey the Son shallwill not see life but themust wrathendure ofGods God rests upon himwrath |
| 4:1 |
Now when theJesus Lordlearned knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus wasis making and baptizing more disciples than John |
| 4:2 |
—although Jesusit himselfwas did not baptizeJesus himself but only his disciples who baptized— |
| 4:3 |
he left Judea and departedstarted againback to Galilee |
| 4:4 |
HeBut he had to passgo through Samar′iaSamaria |
| 4:5 |
So he came to a Samaritan city of Samar′ia called Sy′charSychar near the fieldplot of ground that Jacob gavehad given to his son Joseph |
| 4:6 |
Jacobs well was there and so Jesus weariedtired asout heby was with his journey satwas downsitting besideby the well It was about the sixth hournoon |
| 4:7 |
ThereA cameSamaritan a woman ofcame Samar′ia to draw water and Jesus said to her Give me a drink |
| 4:8 |
ForHis his disciples had gone awayto into the city to buy food |
| 4:9 |
The Samaritan woman said to him How is it that you a Jew ask a drink of me a woman of Samar′iaSamaria For Jews havedo nonot dealingsshare things in common with Samaritans |
| 4:11 |
The woman said to him Sir you have nothingno tobucket draw with and the well is deep; whereWhere do you get that living water |
| 4:12 |
Are you greater than our fatherancestor Jacob who gave us the well and drankwith fromhis itsons himself and his sonsflocks anddrank hisfrom cattleit |
| 4:13 |
Jesus said to her EveryEveryone one who drinks of this water will thirstbe thirsty again |
| 4:14 |
but whoeverthose drinkswho drink of the water that I shallwill give himthem will never thirst;be thethirsty The water that I shallwill give him will become in himthem a spring of water wellinggushing up to eternal life |
| 4:15 |
The woman said to him Sir give me this water so that I may notnever thirstbe northirsty comeor have to keep coming here to draw water |
| 4:16 |
Jesus said to her Go call your husband and come hereback |
| 4:18 |
for you have had five husbands and hethe whomone you have now have is not your husband; thisWhat you have said trulyis true |
| 4:19 |
The woman said to him Sir I perceivesee that you are a prophet |
| 4:20 |
Our fathersancestors worshiped on this mountain; andbut you say that in Jerusalem is the place where menpeople oughtmust to worship is in Jerusalem |
| 4:21 |
Jesus said to her Woman believe me the hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father |
| 4:23 |
But the hour is coming and is now ishere when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth for such the Father seeks such as these to worship him |
| 4:25 |
The woman said to him I know that Messiah is coming he who is called Christ; whenWhen he comes he will showproclaim us all things to us |
| 4:26 |
Jesus said to her I am he the one who speakis speaking to you am he |
| 4:27 |
Just then his disciples came They marveledwere astonished that he was talkingspeaking with a woman but noneno one said What do you wishwant or Why are you talkingspeaking with her |
| 4:28 |
SoThen the woman left her water jar and went awayback intoto the city andShe said to the people |
| 4:29 |
Come and see a man who told me alleverything that I have ever diddone CanHe thiscannot be the ChristMessiah can he |
| 4:30 |
They wentleft out of the city and were comingon their way to him |
| 4:31 |
Meanwhile the disciples besoughtwere urging him saying Rabbi eat something |
| 4:32 |
But he said to them I have food to eat ofthat which you do not know about |
| 4:33 |
So the disciples said to one another HasSurely anyno one has brought him foodsomething to eat |
| 4:34 |
Jesus said to them My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplishcomplete his work |
| 4:35 |
Do you not say ThereFour aremonths yetmore four months then comes the harvest But I tell you liftlook uparound youryou eyes and see how the fields are alreadyripe white for harvestharvesting |
| 4:36 |
HeThe whoreaper reapsis receivesalready receiving wages and gathersis gathering fruit for eternal life so that sower and reaper may rejoice together |
| 4:38 |
I sent you to reap that for which you did not labor; othersOthers have labored and you have entered into their labor |
| 4:39 |
Many Samaritans from that city believed in him because of the womans testimony He told me alleverything that I have ever diddone |
| 4:42 |
They said to the woman It is no longer because of yourwhat wordsyou said that we believe for we have heard for ourselves and we know that this is indeedtruly the Savior of the world |
| 4:43 |
AfterWhen the two days were over he departedwent from that place to Galilee |
| 4:44 |
Forfor Jesus himself had testified that a prophet has no honor in histhe prophets own country |
| 4:45 |
SoWhen when he came to Galilee the Galileans welcomed him havingsince they had seen all that he had done in Jerusalem at the feastfestival; for they too had gone to the feastfestival |
| 4:46 |
SoThen he came again to Cana in Galilee where he had madechanged the water into wine AndNow at Caper′na um there was ana royal official whose son waslay ill in Capernaum |
| 4:48 |
Then Jesus therefore said to him Unless you see signs and wonders you will not believe |
| 4:49 |
The official said to him Sir come down before my childlittle boy dies |
| 4:50 |
Jesus said to him Go; your son will live The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and wentstarted on his way |
| 4:51 |
As he was going down his servantsslaves met him and told him that his sonchild was livingalive |
| 4:52 |
So he asked them the hour when he began to mendrecover and they said to him Yesterday at one in the seventhafternoon hour the fever left him |
| 4:53 |
The father knewrealized that this was the hour when Jesus had said to him Your son will live; andSo he himself believed andalong allwith his whole household |
| 4:54 |
ThisNow this was now the second sign that Jesus did whenafter hecoming had come from Judea to Galilee |
| 5:1 |
After this there was a feastfestival of the Jews and Jesus went up to Jerusalem |
| 5:2 |
Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate there is a pool called in Hebrew called Beth za′thazatha which has five porticoes |
| 5:3 |
In these lay amany multitude of invalids —blind lame and paralyzed |
| 5:6 |
When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had been lying there a long time he said to him Do you want to be healedmade well |
| 5:7 |
The sick man answered him Sir I have no manone to put me into the pool when the water is troubledstirred up; and while I am goingmaking anothermy way someone else steps down beforeahead of me |
| 5:8 |
Jesus said to him RiseStand up take up your palletmat and walk |
| 5:9 |
AndAt at once the man was healedmade well and he took up his palletmat and walkedbegan to walk Now that day was thea sabbath |
| 5:10 |
So the Jews said to the man who washad been cured It is the sabbath; it is not lawful for you to carry your palletmat |
| 5:11 |
But he answered them The man who healedmade me well said to me Take up your palletmat and walk |
| 5:12 |
They asked him Who is the man who said to you Take it up your pallet and walk |
| 5:13 |
Now the man who had been healed did not know who it was for Jesus had withdrawndisappeared asin therethe was a crowd inthat thewas placethere |
| 5:14 |
AfterwardLater Jesus found him in the temple and said to him See you arehave been made well SinDo nonot sin any more so that nothing worse befallhappens to you |
| 5:15 |
The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had healedmade him well |
| 5:16 |
AndTherefore this was why the Jews persecutedstarted persecuting Jesus because he didwas thisdoing such things on the sabbath |
| 5:17 |
But Jesus answered them My Father is still working still and I also am working |
| 5:18 |
ThisFor wasthis whyreason the Jews soughtwere seeking all the more to kill him because he was not only brokebreaking the sabbath but was also calledcalling God his own Father thereby making himself equal withto God |
| 5:19 |
Jesus said to them TrulyVery truly I saytell to you the Son can do nothing ofon his own accord but only what he sees the Father doing; for whatever hethe Father does that the Son does likewise |
| 5:20 |
ForThe the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing; and he will show him greater works than these willso he show him that you maywill marvelbe astonished |
| 5:21 |
ForIndeed just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life so also the Son gives life to whomwhomever he willwishes |
| 5:23 |
so that all may honor the Son evenjust as they honor the Father HeAnyone who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him |
| 5:24 |
TrulyVery truly I saytell to you heanyone who hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life; heand does not come intounder judgment but has passed from death to life |
| 5:25 |
TrulyVery truly I saytell to you the hour is coming and is now ishere when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live |
| 5:26 |
For just as the Father has life in himself so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself; |
| 5:27 |
and he has given him authority to execute judgment because he is the Son of manMan |
| 5:28 |
Do not marvelbe astonished at this; for the hour is coming when all who are in thetheir tombsgraves will hear his voice |
| 5:29 |
and will come forth out—those who have done good to the resurrection of life and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgmentcondemnation |
| 5:30 |
I can do nothing on my own authority; As as I hear I judge; and my judgment is just because I seek to do not my own will but the will of him who sent me |
| 5:31 |
If I beartestify witnessabout to myself my testimony is not true; |
| 5:32 |
thereThere is another who bearstestifies witnesson tomy mebehalf and I know that thehis testimony which he bears to me is true |
| 5:33 |
You sent messengers to John and he hastestified borne witness to the truth |
| 5:34 |
Not that the testimony which I receiveaccept issuch fromhuman man;testimony but I say thisthese things so that you may be saved |
| 5:36 |
But the testimony which I have isa testimony greater than thatJohns ofThe John; for the works whichthat the Father has grantedgiven me to accomplishcomplete thesethe very works whichthat I am doing beartestify meon witnessmy behalf that the Father has sent me |
| 5:37 |
And the Father who sent me has himself bornetestified witnesson tomy mebehalf HisYou voice you have never heard his formvoice youor haveseen neverhis seen;form |
| 5:38 |
and you do not have his word abiding in you forbecause you do not believe him whom he has sent |
| 5:39 |
You search the scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that beartestify witnesson tomy me;behalf |
| 5:40 |
yetYet you refuse to come to me thatto you may have life |
| 5:41 |
I do not receiveaccept glory from menhuman beings |
| 5:42 |
But I know that you havedo not have the love of God withinin you |
| 5:43 |
I have come in my Fathers name and you do not receiveaccept me; if another comes in his own name him you will receiveaccept him |
| 5:44 |
How can you believe whowhen receiveyou accept glory from one another and do not seek the glory that comes from the onlyone who alone is God |
| 5:45 |
Do not think that I shallwill accuse you tobefore the Father; ityour accuser is Moses who accuses you on whom you have set your hope |
| 5:46 |
If you believed Moses you would believe me for he wrote ofabout me |
| 5:47 |
But if you do not believe hiswhat writingshe wrote how will you believe mywhat wordsI say |
| 6:1 |
After this Jesus went to the other side of the Sea of Galilee whichalso iscalled the Sea of Tibe′riTiberias as |
| 6:2 |
AndA alarge multitudecrowd followedkept following him because they saw the signs whichthat he didwas ondoing thosefor whothe weresick diseased |
| 6:3 |
Jesus went up on the mountain and there sat down there with his disciples |
| 6:4 |
Now the Passover the feastfestival of the Jews was atnear hand |
| 6:5 |
LiftingWhen uphe hislooked eyesup then and seeingsaw that a multitudelarge wascrowd coming totoward him Jesus said to Philip HowWhere are we to buy bread sofor that these people mayto eat |
| 6:6 |
ThisHe he said this to test him for he himself knew what he wouldwas going to do |
| 6:7 |
Philip answered him TwoSix hundredmonths denariiwages would not buy enough bread for each of them to get a little |
| 6:9 |
There is a ladboy here who has five barley loaves and two fish; butBut what are they among so many people |
| 6:10 |
Jesus said Make the people sit down Now there was mucha great deal of grass in the place; so thethey men sat down in number about five thousand in all |
| 6:11 |
Then Jesus then took the loaves and when he had given thanks he distributed them to those who were seated; so also the fish as much as they wanted |
| 6:12 |
AndWhen when they hadwere eatensatisfied their fill he told his disciples Gather up the fragments left over so that nothing may be lost |
| 6:13 |
So they gathered them up and filledfrom twelvethe baskets with fragments fromof the five barley loaves left by those who had eaten they filled twelve baskets |
| 6:14 |
When the people saw the sign whichthat he had done they saidbegan to say This is indeed the prophet who is to come into the world |
| 6:15 |
PerceivingWhen thenJesus realized that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king Jesushe withdrew again to the mountain by himself |
| 6:17 |
got into a boat and started across the sea to Caper′naCapernaum um It was now dark and Jesus had not yet come to them |
| 6:18 |
The sea rosebecame rough because a strong wind was blowing |
| 6:19 |
When they had rowed about three or four miles they saw Jesus walking on the sea and drawingcoming near to the boat Theyand they were frightenedterrified |
| 6:20 |
butBut he said to them It is I; do not be afraid |
| 6:21 |
Then they werewanted glad to take him into the boat and immediately the boat wasreached at the land totoward which they were going |
| 6:22 |
OnThe the next day the peoplecrowd whothat remainedhad stayed on the other side of the sea saw that there had been only one boat there andThey also saw that Jesus had not enteredgot into the boat with his disciples but that his disciples had gone away alone |
| 6:23 |
HoweverThen some boats from Tibe′riTiberias as came near the place where they atehad eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks |
| 6:24 |
So when the peoplecrowd saw that neither Jesus was not there nor his disciples were there they themselves got into the boats and went to Caper′naCapernaum umlooking seekingfor Jesus |
| 6:26 |
Jesus answered them TrulyVery truly I saytell to you you seekare looking for me not because you saw signs but because you ate your fill of the loaves |
| 6:27 |
Do not laborwork for the food whichthat perishes but for the food whichthat endures tofor eternal life which the Son of manMan will give to you; forFor it is on him hasthat God the Father has set his seal |
| 6:28 |
Then they said to him What must we do to beperform doing the works of God |
| 6:30 |
So they said to him ThenWhat what sign doare you dogoing to give us then so that we may see it and believe you What work doare you performperforming |
| 6:31 |
Our fathersancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written He gave them bread from heaven to eat |
| 6:32 |
Then Jesus then said to them TrulyVery truly I saytell to you it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven; but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven |
| 6:34 |
They said to him LordSir give us this bread always |
| 6:35 |
Jesus said to them I am the bread of life; heWhoever who comes to me shallwill notnever hungerbe hungry and hewhoever who believes in me shallwill never thirstbe thirsty |
| 6:37 |
AllEverything that the Father gives me will come to me; and himanyone who comes to me I will notnever castdrive outaway; |
| 6:38 |
Forfor I have come down from heaven not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me; |
| 6:39 |
andAnd this is the will of him who sent me that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me but raise it up aton the last day |
| 6:40 |
ForThis this is indeed the will of my Father that everyall one who seessee the Son and believesbelieve in him shouldmay have eternal life; and I will raise himthem up aton the last day |
| 6:41 |
TheThen the Jews thenbegan murmuredto atcomplain about him because he said I am the bread whichthat came down from heaven |
| 6:42 |
They saidwere saying Is not this Jesus the son of Joseph whose father and mother we know How doescan he now say I have come down from heaven |
| 6:43 |
Jesus answered them Do not murmurcomplain among yourselves |
| 6:44 |
No one can come to me unless drawn by the Father who sent me draws him; and I will raise himthat person up aton the last day |
| 6:45 |
It is written in the prophets And they shall all be taught by God EveryEveryone one who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me |
| 6:46 |
Not that anyanyone one has seen the Father except himthe one who is from God; he has seen the Father |
| 6:47 |
TrulyVery truly I saytell to you hewhoever who believes has eternal life |
| 6:49 |
Your fathersancestors ate the manna in the wilderness and they died |
| 6:50 |
This is the bread whichthat comes down from heaven so that aone man may eat of it and not die |
| 6:51 |
I am the living bread whichthat came down from heaven; ifWhoever any one eats of this bread he will live for everforever; and the bread whichthat I shallwill give for the life of the world is my flesh |
| 6:53 |
So Jesus said to them TrulyVery truly I saytell to you unless you eat the flesh of the Son of manMan and drink his blood you have no life in you; |
| 6:54 |
heThose who eatseat my flesh and drinksdrink my blood hashave eternal life and I will raise himthem up aton the last day; |
| 6:55 |
Forfor my flesh is true food indeed and my blood is true drink indeed |
| 6:56 |
HeThose who eatseat my flesh and drinksdrink my blood abidesabide in me and I in himthem |
| 6:57 |
AsJust as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father so hewhoever who eats me will live because of me |
| 6:58 |
This is the bread whichthat came down from heaven not suchlike asthat thewhich fathersyour ancestors ate and they died; heBut the one who eats this bread will live forforever ever |
| 6:59 |
ThisHe said these things while he saidwas teaching in the synagogue as he taught at Caper′na umCapernaum |
| 6:60 |
ManyWhen many of his disciples when they heard it they said This teaching is a hard sayingdifficult; who can listenaccept to it |
| 6:61 |
But Jesus knowingbeing inaware himself that his disciples murmuredwere atcomplaining about it said to them DoDoes youthis takeoffend offenseyou at this |
| 6:62 |
Then what if you were to see the Son of manMan ascending to where he was before |
| 6:63 |
It is the spirit that gives life; the flesh is ofuseless noThe avail; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life |
| 6:64 |
But among you there are some ofwho you that do not believe For Jesus knew from the first who those were the ones that did not believe and who it was the one that would betray him |
| 6:65 |
And he said ThisFor isthis whyreason I have told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father |
| 6:66 |
AfterBecause of this many of his disciples drewturned back and no longer went about with him |
| 6:67 |
So Jesus saidasked to the twelve Do you also wish to go away |
| 6:68 |
Simon Peter answered him Lord to whom shallcan we go You have the words of eternal life; |
| 6:69 |
andWe we have believedcome andto havebelieve comeand to know that you are the Holy One of God |
| 6:70 |
Jesus answered them Did I not choose you the twelve andYet one of you is a devil |
| 6:71 |
He spokewas speaking of Judas the son of Simon Iscariot for he though one of the twelve was going to betray him |
| 7:1 |
After this Jesus went about in Galilee; heHe woulddid not wish to go about in Judea because the Jews soughtwere looking for an opportunity to kill him |
| 7:2 |
Now the JewsJewish feastfestival of TabernaclesBooths was atnear hand |
| 7:3 |
So his brothers said to him Leave here and go to Judea so that your disciples also may see the works you are doing; |
| 7:4 |
Forfor no manone workswho inwants secretto ifbe hewidely seeksknown toacts bein knownsecret openly If you do these things show yourself to the world |
| 7:5 |
For not even his brothers didbelieved not believe in him |
| 7:7 |
The world cannot hate you but it hates me because I testify ofagainst it that its works are evil |
| 7:8 |
Go to the feastfestival yourselves; I am not going up to this feastfestival for my time has not yet fully come |
| 7:9 |
SoAfter saying this he remained in Galilee |
| 7:10 |
But after his brothers had gone up to the feastfestival then he also went up not publicly but as it were in privatesecret |
| 7:11 |
The Jews were looking for him at the feastfestival and saying Where is he |
| 7:12 |
And there was muchconsiderable mutteringcomplaining about him among the peoplecrowds While some saidwere saying He is a good man others saidwere saying No he is leadingdeceiving the peoplecrowd astray |
| 7:13 |
Yet forno fearone ofwould thespeak Jewsopenly noabout onehim spokefor openlyfear of himthe Jews |
| 7:14 |
About the middle of the feastfestival Jesus went up into the temple and taughtbegan to teach |
| 7:15 |
The Jews marveledwere astonished at it saying How isdoes it that this man hashave such learning when he has never studiedbeen taught |
| 7:16 |
SoThen Jesus answered them My teaching is not mine but his who sent me; |
| 7:17 |
ifAnyone anywho mansresolves will is to do histhe will heof shallGod will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own authority |
| 7:18 |
HeThose who speaksspeak on histheir own authorityseek seekstheir his own glory; but hethe one who seeks the glory of him who sent him is true and in him there is nonothing falsehoodfalse in him |
| 7:19 |
Did not Moses give you the law Yet none of you keeps the law Why doare you seeklooking for an opportunity to kill me |
| 7:20 |
The peoplecrowd answered You have a demon Who is seekingtrying to kill you |
| 7:21 |
Jesus answered them I didperformed one deedwork and you all marvelof atyou itare astonished |
| 7:22 |
Moses gave you circumcision not that it is of course not from Moses but from the fatherspatriarchs and you circumcise a man uponon the sabbath |
| 7:23 |
If on the sabbath a man receives circumcision soon the sabbath in order that the law of Moses may not be broken are you angry with me because on the sabbath I madehealed a mans whole body wellon the sabbath |
| 7:25 |
SomeNow some of the people of Jerusalem thereforewere saidsaying Is not this the man whom they seekare trying to kill |
| 7:26 |
And here he is speaking openly andbut they say nothing to him Can it be that the authorities really know that this is the ChristMessiah |
| 7:27 |
Yet we know where this man comesis from; andbut when the ChristMessiah appearscomes no one will know where he comesis from |
| 7:28 |
SoThen Jesus proclaimedcried out as he taughtwas teaching in the temple You know me and you know where I comeam from But I have not come ofon my own accord; But hethe one who sent me is true and him you do not know him |
| 7:29 |
I know him forbecause I comeam from him and he sent me |
| 7:30 |
SoThen they soughttried to arrest him; but no one laid hands on him because his hour had not yet come |
| 7:31 |
Yet many ofin the peoplecrowd believed in him; theyand saidwere saying When the ChristMessiah appearscomes will he do more signs than this man has done |
| 7:32 |
The Pharisees heard the crowd thus muttering such things about him and the chief priests and Pharisees sent officerstemple police to arrest him |
| 7:33 |
Jesus then said I shallwill be with you a little while longer and then I goam going to him who sent me; |
| 7:34 |
youYou will seeksearch for me andbut you will not find me; and where I am you cannot come |
| 7:35 |
The Jews said to one another Where does this man intend to go that we shallwill not find him Does he intend to go to the Dispersion among the Greeks and teach the Greeks |
| 7:36 |
What does he mean by saying You will seeksearch for me and you will not find me and Where I am you cannot come |
| 7:37 |
On the last day of the feastfestival the great day while Jesus stoodwas upstanding andthere proclaimedhe Ifcried anyout oneLet thirstanyone letwho himis thirsty come to me and drink |
| 7:38 |
Heand let the one who believes in me asdrink As the scripture has said Out of histhe believers heart shall flow rivers of living water |
| 7:39 |
Now this he said this about the Spirit which thosebelievers who believed in him were to receive; for as yet thethere Spiritwas hadno notSpirit been given because Jesus was not yet glorified |
| 7:40 |
When they heard these words some ofin the peoplecrowd said This is really the prophet |
| 7:41 |
Others said This is the ChristMessiah But some saidasked IsSurely the ChristMessiah todoes not come from Galilee does he |
| 7:42 |
Has not the scripture said that the ChristMessiah is descended from David and comes from Bethlehem the village where David waslived |
| 7:43 |
So there was a division amongin the peoplecrowd overbecause of him |
| 7:45 |
TheThen officersthe thentemple police went back to the chief priests and Pharisees who saidasked to them Why did you not bringarrest him |
| 7:46 |
The officerspolice answered NoNever manhas everanyone spokespoken like this man |
| 7:47 |
TheThen the Pharisees answeredreplied themSurely Are you ledhave astraynot been deceived too have you also |
| 7:48 |
HaveHas any one of the authorities or of the Pharisees believed in him |
| 7:49 |
But this crowd whowhich dodoes not know the law—they are accursed |
| 7:50 |
Nicode′musNicodemus who had gone to himJesus before and who was one of them saidasked to them |
| 7:51 |
DoesOur our law does not judge apeople man without first giving himthem a hearing andto learningfind out what hethey are doing does it |
| 7:52 |
They replied AreSurely you are not also from Galilee tooare you Search and you will see that no prophet is to risearise from Galilee [ |
| 7:53 |
TheyThen went each toof histhem ownwent house home |
| 8:1 |
butwhile Jesus went to the Mount of Olives |
| 8:2 |
Early in the morning he came again to the temple; allAll the people came to him and he sat down and taughtbegan to teach them |
| 8:3 |
The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery; and placingmaking her instand thebefore midstall of them |
| 8:4 |
they said to him Teacher this woman haswas been caught in the very act of committing adultery |
| 8:5 |
Now in the law Moses commanded us to stone such Whatwomen Now what do you say about her |
| 8:6 |
ThisThey they said this to test him so that they might have some charge to bring against him Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground |
| 8:7 |
AndWhen as they continuedkept toon askquestioning him he stoodstraightened up and said to them Let himanyone among you who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her |
| 8:8 |
And once moreagain he bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground |
| 8:9 |
ButWhen when they heard it they went away one by one beginning with the eldestelders; and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him |
| 8:10 |
Jesus lookedstraightened up and said to her Woman where are they Has no one condemned you |
| 8:11 |
She said No one Lordsir And Jesus said Neither do I condemn you; goGo your way and from now on do not sin again] |
| 8:12 |
Again Jesus spoke to them saying I am the light of the world; heWhoever who follows me will notnever walk in darkness but will have the light of life |
| 8:13 |
TheThen the Pharisees then said to him You are bearingtestifying witnesson toyour yourselfown behalf; your testimony is not truevalid |
| 8:14 |
Jesus answered Even if I dotestify bearon witnessmy toown myselfbehalf my testimony is truevalid forbecause I know whencewhere I have come from and whitherwhere I am going but you do not know whencewhere I come from or whitherwhere I am going |
| 8:15 |
You judge accordingby tohuman thestandards; flesh I judge no one |
| 8:16 |
Yet even if I do judge my judgment is truevalid; for it is not I alone thatwho judge but I and hethe Father who sent me |
| 8:17 |
In your law it is written that the testimony of two menwitnesses is true;valid |
| 8:18 |
I beartestify witnesson tomy myselfown behalf and the Father who sent me bearstestifies witnesson tomy mebehalf |
| 8:19 |
TheyThen they said to him therefore Where is your Father Jesus answered You know neither me nor my Father; ifIf you knew me you would know my Father also |
| 8:20 |
TheseHe spoke these words while he spokewas teaching in the treasury asof he taught in the temple; but no one arrested him because his hour had not yet come |
| 8:21 |
Again he said to them I goam going away and you will seeksearch for me andbut you will die in your sin; whereWhere I am going you cannot come |
| 8:22 |
Then said the Jews Willsaid Is he going to kill himself sinceIs that what he saysmeans by saying Where I am going you cannot come |
| 8:25 |
They said to him Who are you Jesus said to them EvenWhy whatdo I havespeak toldto you fromat theall beginning |
| 8:26 |
I have much to say about you and much to judgecondemn; but hethe one who sent me is true and I declare to the world what I have heard from him |
| 8:27 |
They did not understand that he spokewas speaking to them ofabout the Father |
| 8:28 |
So Jesus said When you have lifted up the Son of manMan then you will knowrealize that I am he and that I do nothing on my own authority but I speak thusthese things as the Father taughtinstructed me |
| 8:29 |
And hethe one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone for I always do what is pleasing to him |
| 8:30 |
As he spokewas thussaying these things many believed in him |
| 8:31 |
Then Jesus then said to the Jews who had believed in him If you continue in my word you are truly my disciples; |
| 8:33 |
They answered him We are descendants of Abraham and have never been inslaves bondage to anyanyone oneWhat Howdo isyou itmean thatby yousaying say You will be made free |
| 8:34 |
Jesus answered them TrulyVery truly I saytell to you everyeveryone one who commits sin is a slave to sin |
| 8:35 |
The slave does not continuehave a permanent place in the house for everhousehold; the son continueshas fora everplace there forever |
| 8:37 |
I know that you are descendants of Abraham; yet you seeklook for an opportunity to kill me because mythere wordis finds no place in you for my word |
| 8:38 |
I speakdeclare of what I have seen within mythe FatherFathers andpresence; as for you you should do what you have heard from yourthe fatherFather |
| 8:39 |
They answered him Abraham is our father Jesus said to them If you were Abrahams children you would dobe doing what Abraham did |
| 8:40 |
but now you seekare trying to kill me a man who has told you the truth whichthat I heard from God; thisThis is not what Abraham did |
| 8:41 |
You doare indeed doing what your father diddoes They said to him We wereare not bornillegitimate of fornicationchildren; we have one Fatherfather even God himself |
| 8:42 |
Jesus said to them If God were your Father you would love me for I proceededcame from God and camenow forthI fromam God;here I camedid not ofcome on my own accord but he sent me |
| 8:43 |
Why do you not understand what I say It is because you cannot bearaccept to hear my word |
| 8:44 |
You are offrom your father the devil and youryou willchoose is to do your fathers desires He was a murderer from the beginning and hasdoes nothingnot tostand doin with the truth because there is no truth in him When he lies he speaks according to his own nature for he is a liar and the father of lies |
| 8:47 |
HeWhoever who is offrom God hears the words of God; theThe reason why you do not hear them is that you are not offrom God |
| 8:49 |
Jesus answered I havedo not have a demon; but I honor my Father and you dishonor me |
| 8:50 |
Yet I do not seek my own glory; there is Oneone who seeks it and he willis be the judge |
| 8:51 |
TrulyVery truly I saytell to you ifwhoever any one keeps my word he will never see death |
| 8:52 |
The Jews said to him Now we know that you have a demon Abraham died asand so did the prophets; andyet you say IfWhoever any one keeps my word he will never taste death |
| 8:53 |
Are you greater than our father Abraham who died AndThe the prophets also died Who do you claim to be |
| 8:54 |
Jesus answered If I glorify myself my glory is nothing; itIt is my Father who glorifies me he of whom you say thatHe he is yourour God |
| 8:55 |
Butthough you havedo not knownknow him; But I know him; Ifif I saidwould say that I do not know him I shouldwould be a liar like you; butBut I do know him and I keep his word |
| 8:56 |
Your fatherancestor Abraham rejoiced that he waswould to see my day; he saw it and was glad |
| 8:57 |
TheThen the Jews then said to him You are not yet fifty years old and have you seen Abraham |
| 8:58 |
Jesus said to them TrulyVery truly I saytell to you before Abraham was I am |
| 8:59 |
So they tookpicked up stones to throw at him; but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple |
| 9:1 |
As he passedwalked byalong he saw a man blind from his birth |
| 9:2 |
AndHis his disciples asked him Rabbi who sinned this man or his parents that he was born blind |
| 9:3 |
Jesus answered ItNeither wasthis notman thatnor thishis manparents sinned; orhe hiswas parentsborn butblind so that theGods works of God might be maderevealed manifest in him |
| 9:4 |
We must work the works of him who sent me while it is day; night comesis coming when no one can work |
| 9:6 |
AsWhen he had said this he spat on the ground and made claymud ofwith the spittlesaliva and anointedspread the mansmud eyeson with the claymans eyes |
| 9:7 |
saying to him Go wash in the pool of Silo′amSiloam which means Sent SoThen he went and washed and came back seeingable to see |
| 9:8 |
The neighbors and those who had seen him before as a beggar saidbegan to ask Is this not this the man who used to sit and beg |
| 9:9 |
Some saidwere saying It is he; othersOthers saidwere saying No but heit is someone like him He saidkept saying I am the man |
| 9:10 |
TheyBut saidthey tokept asking him Then how were your eyes opened |
| 9:11 |
He answered The man called Jesus made claymud andspread anointedit on my eyes and said to me Go to Silo′amSiloam and wash; soThen I went and washed and received my sight |
| 9:14 |
Now it was a sabbath day when Jesus made the claymud and opened his eyes |
| 9:15 |
TheThen the Pharisees againalso askedbegan to ask him how he had received his sight AndHe he said to them He put claymud on my eyes andThen I washed and now I see |
| 9:16 |
Some of the Pharisees said This man is not from God for he does not keepobserve the sabbath But others said How can a man who is a sinner doperform such signs ThereAnd wasthey awere divisiondivided among them |
| 9:17 |
So they said again said to the blind man What do you say about him sinceIt hewas has opened your eyes he opened He said He is a prophet |
| 9:21 |
but we do not know how heit nowis seesthat wenow dohe notsees know nor do we know who opened his eyes Ask him; he is of age heHe will speak for himself |
| 9:22 |
His parents said this because they fearedwere afraid of the Jews; for the Jews had already agreed that ifanyone anywho oneconfessed shouldJesus confess him to be Christthe heMessiah waswould to be put out of the synagogue |
| 9:23 |
Therefore his parents said He is of age; ask him |
| 9:24 |
So for the second time they called the man who had been blind and they said to him Give Godglory theto praise;God weWe know that this man is a sinner |
| 9:25 |
He answered WhetherI do not know whether he is a sinner IOne do not know; one thing I do know that though I was blind now I see |
| 9:27 |
He answered them I have told you already and you would not listen Why do you want to hear it again Do you tooalso want to become his disciples |
| 9:28 |
AndThen they reviled him saying You are his disciple but we are disciples of Moses |
| 9:30 |
The man answered WhyHere this is aan marvelastonishing thing You do not know where he comes from and yet he opened my eyes |
| 9:31 |
We know that God does not listen to sinners but ifhe anydoes onelisten isto aone worshiperwho ofworships Godhim and doesobeys his will God listens to him |
| 9:32 |
Never since the world began has it been heard that anyanyone one opened the eyes of a manperson born blind |
| 9:34 |
They answered him You were born entirely in uttersins sin and wouldare you trying to teach us And they castdrove him out |
| 9:35 |
Jesus heard that they had castdriven him out and havingwhen he found him he said Do you believe in the Son of manMan |
| 9:36 |
He answered And who is he sir Tell me so that I may believe in him |
| 9:37 |
Jesus said to him You have seen him and itthe isone hespeaking whowith speaksyou tois youhe |
| 9:38 |
He said Lord I believe; andAnd he worshiped him |
| 9:39 |
Jesus said For judgment I came into this world for judgment so that those who do not see may see and that those who do see may become blind |
| 9:40 |
Some of the Pharisees near him heard this and they said to him AreSurely we alsoare not blind are we |
| 9:41 |
Jesus said to them If you were blind you would not have nosin guilt; But but now that you say We see your guiltsin remains |
| 10:1 |
TrulyVery truly I saytell to you heanyone who does not enter the sheepfold by the doorgate but climbs in by another way that man is a thief and a robber;bandit |
| 10:2 |
butThe heone who enters by the doorgate is the shepherd of the sheep |
| 10:3 |
ToThe himgatekeeper opens the gatekeepergate opens;for him and the sheep hear his voice andHe he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out |
| 10:4 |
When he has brought out all his own he goes beforeahead of them and the sheep follow him forbecause they know his voice |
| 10:5 |
AThey stranger they will not follow a stranger but they will fleerun from him forbecause they do not know the voice of strangers |
| 10:6 |
ThisJesus used this figure Jesusof usedspeech with them but they did not understand what he was saying to them |
| 10:7 |
So again Jesus again said to them TrulyVery truly I saytell to you I am the doorgate offor the sheep |
| 10:8 |
All who came before me are thieves and robbersbandits; but the sheep did not heedlisten to them |
| 10:9 |
I am the door;gate ifWhoever any one enters by me he will be saved and will gocome in and go out and find pasture |
| 10:10 |
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life and have it abundantly |
| 10:12 |
HeThe hired hand who is anot hirelingthe shepherd and does not a shepherd whose own the sheep are not sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees;runs away—and the wolf snatches them and scatters them |
| 10:13 |
HeThe fleeshired becausehand heruns isaway because a hirelinghired andhand caresdoes nothingnot care for the sheep |
| 10:14 |
I am the good shepherd; I know my own and my own know me |
| 10:15 |
just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; andAnd I lay down my life for the sheep |
| 10:16 |
And I have other sheep that aredo not ofbelong to this fold; I must bring them also and they will heedlisten to my voice So there shallwill be one flock one shepherd |
| 10:17 |
For this reason the Father loves me because I lay down my life thatin Iorder mayto take it up again |
| 10:18 |
No one takes it from me but I lay it down of my own accord I have power to lay it down and I have power to take it up again; this charge I have received this command from my Father |
| 10:19 |
ThereAgain wasthe againJews awere divisiondivided among the Jews because of these words |
| 10:20 |
Many of them saidwere saying He has a demon and he is mad;out whyof his mind Why listen to him |
| 10:21 |
Others saidwere saying These are not the sayingswords of one who has a demon Can a demon open the eyes of the blind |
| 10:22 |
ItAt wasthat time the feastfestival of the Dedication attook place in Jerusalem; It was winter |
| 10:23 |
it was winter and Jesus was walking in the temple in the portico of Solomon |
| 10:24 |
So the Jews gathered roundaround him and said to him How long will you keep us in suspense If you are the ChristMessiah tell us plainly |
| 10:25 |
Jesus answered them I have told you and you do not believe The works that I do in my Fathers name theytestify bear witness to me; |
| 10:27 |
My sheep hear my voice and I know them and they follow me; |
| 10:28 |
and I give them eternal life and they shallwill never perish andNo no one shallwill snatch them out of my hand |
| 10:29 |
MyWhat my Father who has given them to me is greater than all else and no one iscan able to snatch themit out of the Fathers hand |
| 10:30 |
IThe Father and theI Father are one |
| 10:32 |
Jesus answeredreplied them I have shown you many good works from the Father; forFor which of these doare you going to stone me |
| 10:33 |
The Jews answered him It is not for a good work that we are going to stone you but for blasphemy; because you beingthough only a manhuman makebeing are making yourself God |
| 10:34 |
Jesus answered them Is it not written in your law I said you are gods |
| 10:35 |
If hethose called them gods to whom the word of God came were called gods—and the scripture cannot be brokenannulled— |
| 10:36 |
docan you say ofthat himthe one whom the Father consecratedhas sanctified and sent into the world Youis are blaspheming because I said I am theGods Son of God |
| 10:37 |
If I am not doing the works of my Father then do not believe me; |
| 10:38 |
butBut if I do them even though you do not believe me believe the works so that you may know and understand that the Father is in me and I am in the Father |
| 10:39 |
AgainThen they tried to arrest him again but he escaped from their hands |
| 10:40 |
He went away again across the Jordan to the place where John athad firstbeen baptizedbaptizing earlier and there he remained there |
| 10:41 |
AndMany many came to him; and they saidwere saying John didperformed no sign but everything that John said about this man was true |
| 11:1 |
Now a certain man was ill Laz′arusLazarus of Bethany the village of Mary and her sister Martha |
| 11:2 |
ItMary was Marythe one who anointed the Lord with ointmentperfume and wiped his feet with her hair; whoseher brother Laz′arusLazarus was ill |
| 11:3 |
So the sisters sent a message to himJesus saying Lord he whom you love is ill |
| 11:4 |
But when Jesus heard it he said This illness isdoes not untolead to death; rather it is for theGods glory of God so that the Son of God may be glorified bythrough meansit of it |
| 11:5 |
NowAccordingly though Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Laz′arusLazarus |
| 11:6 |
Soafter whenhaving he heard that heLazarus was ill he stayed two days longer in the place where he was |
| 11:7 |
Then after this he said to the disciples Let us go intoto Judea again |
| 11:8 |
The disciples said to him Rabbi the Jews were butjust now seekingtrying to stone you and are you going there again |
| 11:9 |
Jesus answered Are there not twelve hours inof thedaylight dayThose Ifwho anywalk oneduring walks in the day hedo does not stumble because hethey seessee the light of this world |
| 11:10 |
But ifthose anywho onewalk walksat in the night hestumble stumbles because the light is not in himthem |
| 11:11 |
ThusAfter hesaying spokethis and then he saidtold to them Our friend Laz′arusLazarus has fallen asleep but I goam going there to awakeawaken him out of sleep |
| 11:12 |
The disciples said to him Lord if he has fallen asleep he will recoverbe all right |
| 11:13 |
Now Jesus however had spokenbeen ofspeaking about his death but they thought that he meantwas takingreferring restmerely into sleep |
| 11:14 |
Then Jesus told them plainly Laz′arusLazarus is dead; |
| 11:15 |
andFor for your sake I am glad that I was not there so that you may believe But let us go to him |
| 11:16 |
Thomas who was called the Twin said to his fellow disciples Let us also go that we may die with him |
| 11:17 |
NowWhen when Jesus camearrived he found that Laz′arusLazarus had already been in the tomb four days |
| 11:18 |
Now Bethany was near Jerusalem aboutsome two miles offaway |
| 11:19 |
and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them concerningabout their brother |
| 11:20 |
When Martha heard that Jesus was coming she went and met him while Mary satstayed inat thehome house |
| 11:22 |
AndBut even now I know that whateverGod youwill askgive fromyou Godwhatever Godyou willask giveof youhim |
| 11:24 |
Martha said to him I know that he will rise again in the resurrection aton the last day |
| 11:25 |
Jesus said to her I am the resurrection and the life; heThose who believesbelieve in me even though hethey die yetwill shall he live |
| 11:26 |
and whoevereveryone who lives and believes in me shallwill never die Do you believe this |
| 11:27 |
She said to him Yes Lord; I believe that you are the ChristMessiah the Son of God hethe whoone is coming into the world |
| 11:28 |
When she had said this she went back and called her sister Mary sayingand quietlytold her privately The Teacher is here and is calling for you |
| 11:29 |
And when she heard it she rosegot up quickly and went to him |
| 11:30 |
Now Jesus had not yet come to the village but was still inat the place where Martha had met him |
| 11:31 |
WhenThe the Jews who were with her in the house consoling her saw Mary riseget up quickly and go out theyThey followed her supposingbecause they thought that she was going to the tomb to weep there |
| 11:32 |
ThenWhen Mary when she came where Jesus was and saw him fellshe knelt at his feet sayingand said to him Lord if you had been here my brother would not have died |
| 11:33 |
When Jesus saw her weeping and the Jews who came with her also weeping he was deeplygreatly moveddisturbed in spirit and troubled;deeply moved |
| 11:34 |
andHe he said Where have you laid him They said to him Lord come and see |
| 11:35 |
Jesus weptbegan to weep |
| 11:38 |
Then Jesus deeplyagain movedgreatly againdisturbed came to the tomb; itIt was a cave and a stone laywas uponlying against it |
| 11:39 |
Jesus said Take away the stone Martha the sister of the dead man said to him Lord byalready this time there willis bea anstench odorbecause for he has been dead four days |
| 11:40 |
Jesus said to her Did I not tell you that if you wouldbelieved believe you would see the glory of God |
| 11:41 |
So they took away the stone And Jesus liftedlooked upupward his eyes and said Father I thank theeyou thatfor thouhaving hast heard me |
| 11:42 |
I knew that thouyou hearestalways hear me always but I have said this onfor accountthe sake of the peoplecrowd standing byhere so that they may believe that thouyou didstsent send me |
| 11:43 |
When he had said this he cried with a loud voice Laz′arusLazarus come out |
| 11:44 |
The dead man came out his hands and feet bound with bandagesstrips of cloth and his face wrapped within a cloth Jesus said to them Unbind him and let him go |
| 11:45 |
Many of the Jews therefore who had come with Mary and had seen what heJesus did believed in him; |
| 11:46 |
butBut some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesushe had done |
| 11:47 |
So the chief priests and the Pharisees gatheredcalled a meeting of the council and said What are we to do ForThis this man performsis performing many signs |
| 11:48 |
If we let him go on thuslike everythis oneeveryone will believe in him and the Romans will come and destroy both our holy place and our nation |
| 11:49 |
But one of them Ca′iaphasCaiaphas who was high priest that year said to them You know nothing at all; |
| 11:50 |
youYou do not understand that it is expedientbetter for you thatto have one man should die for the people andthan thatto have the whole nation shoulddestroyed not perish |
| 11:51 |
He did not say this ofon his own accord but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus shouldwas about to die for the nation |
| 11:52 |
and not for the nation only but to gather into one the dispersed children of God who are scattered abroad |
| 11:53 |
So from that day on they tookplanned counsel how to put him to death |
| 11:54 |
Jesus therefore no longer wentwalked about openly among the Jews but went from there to thea countrytown nearcalled theEphraim wildernessin tothe aregion townnear calledthe E′phraimwilderness; and there he stayedremained there with the disciples |
| 11:55 |
Now the Passover of the Jews was atnear hand and many went up from the country to Jerusalem before the Passover to purify themselves |
| 11:56 |
They were looking for Jesus and sayingwere toasking one another as they stood in the temple What do you think ThatSurely he will not come to the feastfestival will he |
| 11:57 |
Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that ifanyone anywho one knew where heJesus was he should let them know so that they might arrest him |
| 12:1 |
Six days before the Passover Jesus came to Bethany wherethe Laz′arushome wasof Lazarus whom Jesushe had raised from the dead |
| 12:2 |
There they madegave him a supper;dinner for him Martha served and Laz′arusLazarus was one of those at the table with him |
| 12:3 |
Mary took a pound of costly ointmentperfume made of pure nard and anointed theJesus feet of Jesus and wiped histhem feet with her hair; andThe the house was filled with the fragrance of the ointmentperfume |
| 12:4 |
But Judas Iscariot one of his disciples hethe one who was about to betray him said |
| 12:5 |
Why was this ointmentperfume not sold for three hundred denarii and the money given to the poor |
| 12:6 |
ThisHe he said this not thatbecause he cared forabout the poor but because he was a thief; and as he hadkept the moneycommon boxpurse heand used to takesteal what was put into it |
| 12:7 |
Jesus said LetLeave her alone letShe herbought it so that she might keep it for the day of my burial |
| 12:8 |
TheYou poor you always have the poor with you but you do not always have me |
| 12:9 |
When the great crowd of the Jews learned that he was there they came not only onbecause account of Jesus but also to see Laz′arusLazarus whom he had raised from the dead |
| 12:10 |
So the chief priests planned to put Laz′arusLazarus also to death as well |
| 12:11 |
becausesince it was on account of him that many of the Jews were goingdeserting away and were believing in Jesus |
| 12:12 |
The next day athe great crowd whothat had come to the feastfestival heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem |
| 12:13 |
So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him cryingshouting Hosanna Blessed is hethe one who comes in the name of the Lord— even the King of Israel |
| 12:14 |
And Jesus found a young assdonkey and sat uponon it; as it is written: |
| 12:15 |
FearDo not be afraid daughter of Zion; beholdLook your king is coming sitting on ana asssdonkeys colt |
| 12:16 |
His disciples did not understand thisthese things at first; but when Jesus was glorified then they remembered that thisthese things had been written of him and had been done to him |
| 12:17 |
TheSo the crowd that had been with him when he called Laz′arusLazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead borecontinued witnessto testify |
| 12:18 |
TheIt reasonwas whyalso thebecause crowdthey wentheard tothat meethe himhad wasperformed this sign that theythe heardcrowd hewent hadto donemeet thishim sign |
| 12:19 |
The Pharisees then said to one another You see that you can do nothing; lookLook the world has gone after him |
| 12:20 |
Now among those who went up to worship at the feastfestival were some Greeks |
| 12:21 |
SoThey these came to Philip who was from BethBethsaida sa′ida in Galilee and said to him Sir we wish to see Jesus |
| 12:22 |
Philip went and told Andrew; then Andrew wentand with Philip went and they told Jesus |
| 12:23 |
And Jesus answered them The hour has come for the Son of manMan to be glorified |
| 12:24 |
TrulyVery truly I saytell to you unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies it remains alonejust a single grain; but if it dies it bears much fruit |
| 12:25 |
HeThose who loveslove histheir life loseslose it and hethose who hateshate histheir life in this world will keep it for eternal life |
| 12:26 |
IfWhoever any one serves me he must follow me; and where I am there shallwill my servant be also; ifWhoever any one serves me the Father will honor him |
| 12:27 |
Now is my soul is troubled And what shallshould I say —Father save me from this hour No it is for this purposereason that I have come to this hour |
| 12:28 |
Father glorify thyyour name Then a voice came from heaven I have glorified it and I will glorify it again |
| 12:29 |
The crowd standing bythere heard it and said that it hadwas thunderedthunder Others said An angel has spoken to him |
| 12:31 |
Now is the judgment of this world; now shall the ruler of this world will be castdriven out; |
| 12:32 |
andAnd I when I am lifted up from the earth will draw all menpeople to myself |
| 12:33 |
He said this to showindicate bythe whatkind of death he was to die |
| 12:34 |
The crowd answered him We have heard from the law that the ChristMessiah remains forforever ever How can you say that the Son of manMan must be lifted up Who is this Son of manMan |
| 12:35 |
Jesus said to them The light is with you for a little longer Walk while you have the light lestso that the darkness may not overtake you; heIf whoyou walkswalk in the darkness doesyou do not know where heyou goesare going |
| 12:36 |
While you have the light believe in the light so that you may become sonschildren of light WhenAfter Jesus had said this he departed and hid himself from them |
| 12:37 |
ThoughAlthough he had doneperformed so many signs beforein themtheir yetpresence they did not believe in him; |
| 12:38 |
itThis was thatto fulfill the word spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: Lord who has believed our reportmessage and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed |
| 12:39 |
ThereforeAnd so they could not believe Forbecause Isaiah againalso said |
| 12:40 |
He has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart lestso that they shouldmight seenot look with their eyes and perceiveunderstand with their heart and turn— forand meI towould heal them |
| 12:41 |
Isaiah said this because he saw his glory and spoke ofabout him |
| 12:42 |
Nevertheless many even of the authorities believed in him butBut forbecause fear of the Pharisees they did not confess it lestfor fear that they shouldwould be put out of the synagogue:; |
| 12:43 |
for they loved thehuman praiseglory of men more than the praiseglory ofthat comes from God |
| 12:44 |
AndThen Jesus cried outaloud: andWhoever said He who believes in me believes not in me but in him who sent me |
| 12:45 |
And hewhoever who sees me sees him who sent me |
| 12:46 |
I have come as light into the world so that whoevereveryone who believes in me mayshould not remain in the darkness |
| 12:47 |
IfI anydo onenot judge anyone who hears my sayingswords and does not keep them I do not judge him; for I didcame not come to judge the world but to save the world |
| 12:48 |
HeThe one who rejects me and does not receive my sayingsword has a judge; on the last day the word that I have spoken will beserve hisas judge on the last day |
| 12:49 |
Forfor I have not spoken on my own authority;but the Father who sent me has himself given me a commandment about what to say and what to speak |
| 12:50 |
And I know that his commandment is eternal life What I sayspeak therefore I sayspeak just as the Father has biddentold me |
| 13:1 |
Now before the feastfestival of the Passover when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart outfrom of this world and go to the Father havingHaving loved his own who were in the world he loved them to the end |
| 13:2 |
AndThe during supper when the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariotson Simonsof sonSimon Iscariot to betray him And during supper |
| 13:4 |
rosegot up from supperthe laidtable asidetook off his garmentsouter robe and girdedtied himself with a towel around himself |
| 13:5 |
Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples feet and to wipe them with the towel withthat whichwas hetied wasaround girdedhim |
| 13:6 |
He came to Simon Peter; andwho Peter said to him Lord doare you going to wash my feet |
| 13:7 |
Jesus answered himYou Whatdo Inot amknow doingnow youwhat doI notam knowdoing now but afterwardlater you will understand |
| 13:8 |
Peter said to him You shallwill never wash my feet Jesus answered himUnless If I do not wash you you have no partshare inwith me |
| 13:10 |
Jesus said to him HeOne who has bathed does not need to wash except for histhe feet but he is entirely clean allAnd over; and you are clean butthough not everyall one of you |
| 13:11 |
For he knew who was to betray him; thatfor wasthis whyreason he said YouNot areall notof allyou are clean |
| 13:12 |
WhenAfter he had washed their feet andhad takenput on his garmentsrobe and resumedhad hisreturned placeto the table he said to them Do you know what I have done to you |
| 13:13 |
You call me Teacher and Lord; —and you are right for sothat is what I am |
| 13:14 |
IfSo if I then your Lord and Teacher have washed your feet you also ought to wash one anothers feet |
| 13:15 |
For I have givenset you an example that you also should do as I have done to you |
| 13:16 |
TrulyVery truly I saytell to you aservants servantare is not greater than histheir master; nor isare hemessengers who is sent greater than hethe one who sent himthem |
| 13:17 |
If you know these things blessedyou are youblessed if you do them |
| 13:18 |
I am not speaking of all of you all; I know whom I have chosen; But it is thatto fulfill the scripture mayThe beone fulfilled He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me |
| 13:19 |
I tell you this now before it takesoccurs placeso that when it does takeoccur place you may believe that I am he |
| 13:20 |
TrulyVery truly I saytell to you hewhoever who receives any one whom I send receives me; and hewhoever who receives me receives him who sent me |
| 13:21 |
WhenAfter Jesussaying hadthis thusJesus spoken he was troubled in spirit and testifieddeclared TrulyVery truly I saytell to you one of you will betray me |
| 13:22 |
The disciples looked at one another uncertain of whom he spokewas speaking |
| 13:23 |
One of his disciples—the one whom Jesus loved —was lyingreclining closenext to the breast of Jesushim; |
| 13:24 |
so Simon Peter beckonedtherefore motioned to him andto saidask TellJesus us who it is of whom he speakswas speaking |
| 13:25 |
So lyingwhile thusreclining closenext to the breast of Jesus he saidasked to him Lord who is it |
| 13:26 |
Jesus answered It is hethe one to whom I shall give this morselpiece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish So when he had dipped the morselpiece of bread he gave it to Judas the son of Simon Iscariot |
| 13:27 |
ThenAfter afterhe received the morselpiece of bread Satan entered into him Jesus said to him WhatDo quickly what you are going to do do quickly |
| 13:29 |
Some thought that because Judas had the moneycommon boxpurse Jesus was telling him Buy what we need for the feastfestival; or that he should give something to the poor |
| 13:30 |
So after receiving the morselpiece of bread he immediately went out; andAnd it was night |
| 13:31 |
When he had gone out Jesus said Now is the Son of manMan has been glorified and inGod himhas Godbeen is glorified; in him |
| 13:32 |
ifIf God ishas been glorified in him God will also glorify him in himself and will glorify him at once |
| 13:33 |
Little children yet a little while I am with you only a little longer You will seeklook for me; and as I said to the Jews so now I say to you Where I am going you cannot come |
| 13:34 |
AI newgive commandmentyou Ia givenew tocommandment you that you love one another; evenJust as I have loved you that you also should love one another |
| 13:35 |
By this alleveryone men will know that you are my disciples if you have love for one another |
| 13:36 |
Simon Peter said to him Lord where are you going Jesus answered Where I am going you cannot follow me now; but you shallwill follow afterward |
| 13:37 |
Peter said to him Lord why cannotcan I not follow you now I will lay down my life for you |
| 13:38 |
Jesus answered Will you lay down your life for me TrulyVery truly I saytell to you before the cock willcrows notyou crowwill till you have denied me three times |
| 14:1 |
LetDo not let your hearts be troubled; believeBelieve in God believe also in me |
| 14:2 |
In my Fathers house there are many rooms;dwelling ifplaces If it were not so would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you |
| 14:3 |
And whenif I go and prepare a place for you I will come again and will take you to myself so that where I am there you may be also |
| 14:4 |
And you know the way to the place where I am going |
| 14:5 |
Thomas said to him Lord we do not know where you are going; howHow can we know the way |
| 14:6 |
Jesus said to him I am the way and the truth and the life; noNo one comes to the Father butexcept bythrough me |
| 14:7 |
If you hadknow known me you wouldwill haveknow known my Father also; henceforthFrom now on you do know him and have seen him |
| 14:8 |
Philip said to him Lord show us the Father and we shallwill be satisfied |
| 14:9 |
Jesus said to him Have I been with you soall longthis time Philip and yet you still do not know me PhilipWhoever He who has seen me has seen the Father; howHow can you say Show us the Father |
| 14:10 |
Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority; but the Father who dwells in me does his works |
| 14:11 |
Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; orbut elseif you do not then believe me forbecause the sake of the works themselves |
| 14:12 |
TrulyVery truly I saytell to you hethe one who believes in me will also do the works that I do; and in fact will do greater works than these will he do because I goam going to the Father |
| 14:13 |
WhateverI will do whatever you ask in my name Iso will do it that the Father may be glorified in the Son; |
| 14:14 |
ifIf in my name you ask anythingme infor myanything name I will do it |
| 14:16 |
And I will prayask the Father and he will give you another CounselorAdvocate to be with you forforever ever |
| 14:17 |
evenThis is the Spirit of truth whom the world cannot receive because it neither sees him nor knows him; youYou know him forbecause he dwellsabides with you and he will be in you |
| 14:18 |
I will not leave you desolateorphaned; I willam comecoming to you |
| 14:19 |
YetIn a little while and the world will no longer see me no more but you will see me; because I live you also will live also |
| 14:20 |
InOn that day you will know that I am in my Father and you in me and I in you |
| 14:21 |
HeThey who hashave my commandments and keepskeep them heare itthose is who loveslove me; and hethose who loveslove me will be loved by my Father and I will love himthem and manifestreveal myself to himthem |
| 14:22 |
Judas not Iscariot said to him Lord how is it that you will manifestreveal yourself to us and not to the world |
| 14:23 |
Jesus answered him IfThose awho manlove loves me he will keep my word and my Father will love himthem and we will come to himthem and make our home with himthem |
| 14:24 |
HeWhoever who does not love me does not keep my words; and the word whichthat you hear is not mine but is from the FathersFather who sent me |
| 14:25 |
These things I have spokensaid these things to you while I am still with you |
| 14:26 |
But the CounselorAdvocate the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in my name he will teach you alleverything things and bringremind toyou yourof remembrance all that I have said to you |
| 14:27 |
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you; I do not give to you as the world gives doDo Inot givelet to you Let not your hearts be troubled neitherand do not let them be afraid |
| 14:28 |
You heard me say to you I goam going away and I willam comecoming to you If you loved me you would haverejoice rejoicedthat because I goam going to the Father; forbecause the Father is greater than I |
| 14:29 |
And now I have told you this before it takesoccurs place so that when it does takeoccur place you may believe |
| 14:31 |
but I do as the Father has commanded me so that the world may know that I love the Father Rise let us gobe henceon our way |
| 15:1 |
I am the true vine and my Father is the vinedresservinegrower |
| 15:2 |
EveryHe removes every branch ofin mineme that bears no fruit heEvery takes away and every branch that doesbears bear fruit he prunes thatto make it may bear more fruit |
| 15:3 |
You arehave already madebeen cleancleansed by the word whichthat I have spoken to you |
| 15:4 |
Abide in me andas I abide in you AsJust as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine neither can you unless you abide in me |
| 15:5 |
I am the vine you are the branches HeThose who abidesabide in me and I in himthem hebear it is that bears much fruit forbecause apart from me you can do nothing |
| 15:6 |
IfWhoever a man does not abide in me he is castthrown forthaway aslike a branch and withers; andsuch the branches are gathered thrown into the fire and burned |
| 15:7 |
If you abide in me and my words abide in you ask for whatever you willwish and it shallwill be done for you |
| 15:8 |
ByMy this my Father is glorified by this that you bear much fruit and sobecome prove to be my disciples |
| 15:9 |
As the Father has loved me so I have I loved you; abide in my love |
| 15:11 |
These things I have spokensaid these things to you so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be fullcomplete |
| 15:13 |
GreaterNo loveone has nogreater manlove than this thatto a man lay down hisones life for hisones friends |
| 15:15 |
NoI longer do Inot call you servants forany longer because the servant does not know what histhe master is doing; but I have called you friends forbecause all that I have heardmade fromknown myto Fatheryou everything that I have madeheard knownfrom tomy youFather |
| 15:16 |
You did not choose me but I chose you andAnd I appointed you thatto you should go and bear fruit andfruit that yourwill fruitlast should abide; so that the Father will give you whatever you ask thehim Father in my name he may give it to you |
| 15:17 |
This I commandam giving you tothese commands so that you may love one another |
| 15:18 |
If the world hates you knowbe aware that it has hated me before it hated you |
| 15:19 |
If you werebelonged ofto the world the world would love you as its own; butBecause because you aredo not ofbelong to the world but I chosehave chosen you out of the world —therefore the world hates you |
| 15:20 |
Remember the word that I said to you AServants servantare is not greater than histheir master If they persecuted me they will persecute you; if they kept my word they will keep yours also |
| 15:21 |
But all this they will do all these things to you on account of my accountname because they do not know him who sent me |
| 15:23 |
HeWhoever who hates me hates my Father also |
| 15:24 |
If I had not done among them the works whichthat no one else did they would not have sin; butBut now they have seen and hated both me and my Father |
| 15:25 |
It iswas to fulfilfulfill the word that is written in their law They hated me without a cause |
| 15:26 |
ButWhen when the CounselorAdvocate comes whom I shallwill send to you from the Father even the Spirit of truth who proceedscomes from the Father he will beartestify witnesson tomy me;behalf |
| 15:27 |
andYou you also are witnessesto testify because you have been with me from the beginning |
| 16:1 |
I have said allthese thisthings to you to keep you from fallingstumbling away |
| 16:2 |
They will put you out of the synagogues; indeedIndeed thean hour is coming when whoeverthose killswho kill you will think hethat isby doing so they are offering serviceworship to God |
| 16:3 |
And they will do this because they have not known the Father noror me |
| 16:4 |
But I have said these things to you so that when their hour comes you may remember that I told you ofabout them I did not say these things to you from the beginning because I was with you |
| 16:7 |
Nevertheless I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away for if I do not go away the CounselorAdvocate will not come to you; but if I go I will send him to you |
| 16:8 |
And when he comes he will convinceprove the world concerningwrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: |
| 16:9 |
concerningabout sin because they do not believe in me; |
| 16:10 |
concerningabout righteousness because I goam going to the Father and you will see me no morelonger; |
| 16:11 |
concerningabout judgment because the ruler of this world ishas judgedbeen condemned |
| 16:12 |
I still have yet many things to say to you but you cannot bear them now |
| 16:13 |
When the Spirit of truth comes he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own authority but will speak whatever he hears he will speak and he will declare to you the things that are to come |
| 16:14 |
He will glorify me forbecause he will take what is mine and declare it to you |
| 16:15 |
All that the Father has is mine; thereforeFor this reason I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you |
| 16:16 |
A little while and you will no longer see me noand more; again a little while and you will see me |
| 16:17 |
SomeThen some of his disciples said to one another What isdoes thishe thatmean heby sayssaying to us A little while and you will notno longer see me and again a little while and you will see me; and becauseBecause I goam going to the Father |
| 16:18 |
They said What does he mean by this a little while We do not know what he meansis talking about |
| 16:19 |
Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him; so he said to them IsAre this what you arediscussing askingamong yourselves what I meant bywhen sayingI said A little while and you will notno longer see me and again a little while and you will see me |
| 16:20 |
TrulyVery truly I saytell to you you will weep and lamentmourn but the world will rejoice; you will behave sorrowfulpain but your sorrowpain will turn into joy |
| 16:21 |
When a woman is in travaillabor she has sorrowpain because her hour has come; butBut when sheher child is deliveredborn of the child she no longer remembers the anguish forbecause of the joy thatof having brought a childhuman isbeing born into the world |
| 16:22 |
So you have sorrowpain now; but I will see you again and your hearts will rejoice and no one will take your joy from you |
| 16:23 |
InOn that day you will ask nothing of me TrulyVery truly I saytell to you if you ask anything of the Father in my name he will give it to you in my name |
| 16:24 |
HithertoUntil now you have not asked nothingfor anything in my name; askAsk and you will receive so that your joy may be fullcomplete |
| 16:25 |
I have said thisthese things to you in figures; theof speech The hour is coming when I shallwill no longer speak to you in figures but will tell you plainly of the Father |
| 16:26 |
InOn that day you will ask in my name; and I do not say to you that I shallwill prayask the Father foron youyour behalf; |
| 16:27 |
for the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from theGod Father |
| 16:28 |
I came from the Father and have come into the world; again I am leaving the world and am going to the Father |
| 16:29 |
His disciples said AhYes now you are speaking plainly not in any figure of speech |
| 16:30 |
Now we know that you know all things and do not need none to have anyone question you; by this we believe that you came from God |
| 16:32 |
The hour is coming indeed it has come when you will be scattered everyeach manone to his home and you will leave me alone; yetYet I am not alone forbecause the Father is with me |
| 16:33 |
I have said this to you so that in me you may have peace In the world you haveface tribulation;persecution butBut betake ofcourage; good cheer I have overcomeconquered the world |
| 17:1 |
WhenAfter Jesus had spoken these words he liftedlooked up his eyes to heaven and said Father the hour has come; glorify thyyour Son so that the Son may glorify theeyou |
| 17:2 |
since thouyou hasthave given him powerauthority over all fleshpeople to give eternal life to all whom thouyou hasthave given him |
| 17:3 |
And this is eternal life that they may know theeyou the only true God and Jesus Christ whom thouyou hasthave sent |
| 17:4 |
I glorified theeyou on earth havingby accomplishedfinishing the work whichthat thouyou gavestgave me to do; |
| 17:5 |
andSo now Father glorify thou me in thyyour own presence with the glory whichthat I had within theeyour presence before the world was madeexisted |
| 17:6 |
I have manifestedmade thyyour name known to thethose men whom thouyou gavestgave me outfrom of the world; thineThey they were yours and thouyou gavestgave them to me and they have kept thyyour word |
| 17:7 |
Now they know that everything thatyou thouhave hast given me is from theeyou; |
| 17:8 |
for Ithe havewords giventhat themyou thegave wordsto whichme thouI gavesthave megiven to them and they have received them and know in truth that I came from theeyou; and they have believed that thouyou didstsent send me |
| 17:9 |
I am prayingasking foron themtheir behalf; I am not prayingasking foron behalf of the world but foron behalf of those whom thouyou hastgave given me forbecause they are thine;yours |
| 17:10 |
allAll mine are thineyours and thineyours are mine; and I amhave been glorified in them |
| 17:11 |
And now I am no morelonger in the world but they are in the world and I am coming to theeyou Holy Father keepprotect them in thyyour name whichthat thouyou hasthave given me so that they may be one even as we are one |
| 17:12 |
While I was with them I keptprotected them in thyyour name whichthat thouyou hasthave given me; I have guarded them and nonenot one of them iswas lost butexcept the sonone ofdestined perditionto be lost so that the scripture might be fulfilled |
| 17:13 |
But now I am coming to thee;you and I speak these things I speak in the world so that they may have my joy fulfilledmade complete in themselves |
| 17:14 |
I have given them thyyour word; and the world has hated them because they aredo not ofbelong to the world evenjust as I amdo not ofbelong to the world |
| 17:15 |
I doam not prayasking thatyou thouto shouldst take them out of the world but thatI thouask shouldstyou keepto protect them from the evil one |
| 17:16 |
They aredo not ofbelong to the world evenjust as I amdo not ofbelong to the world |
| 17:17 |
Sanctify them in the truth; thyyour word is truth |
| 17:18 |
As thouyou didsthave sendsent me into the world so I have sent them into the world |
| 17:19 |
And for their sakesakes I consecratesanctify myself so that they also may be consecratedsanctified in truth |
| 17:20 |
I doask not prayonly foron behalf of these only but also foron behalf of those who will believe in me through their word |
| 17:21 |
that they may all be one; evenAs asyou thou Father artare in me and I am in theeyou thatmay they also may be in us so that the world may believe that thouyou hasthave sent me |
| 17:22 |
The glory whichthat thouyou hasthave given me I have given to them so that they may be one even as we are one |
| 17:23 |
I in them and thouyou in me that they may become perfectlycompletely one so that the world may know that thouyou hasthave sent me and hasthave loved them even as thouyou hasthave loved me |
| 17:24 |
Father I desire that theythose also whom thouyou hasthave given me may be with me where I am to beholdsee my glory which thouyou hasthave given me inbecause thyyou loveloved for me before the foundation of the world |
| 17:25 |
ORighteous righteous Father the world hasdoes not knownknow theeyou but I haveknow known theeyou; and these know that thouyou hasthave sent me |
| 17:26 |
I made your name known to them thy name and I will make it known so that the love with which thouyou hasthave loved me may be in them and I in them |
| 18:1 |
WhenAfter Jesus had spoken these words he went forthout with his disciples across the Kidron valley to a place where there was a garden which he and his disciples entered |
| 18:2 |
Now Judas who betrayed him also knew the place; forbecause Jesus often met there with his disciples |
| 18:3 |
So Judas procuringbrought a banddetachment of soldiers andtogether somewith officerspolice from the chief priests and the Pharisees wentand they came there with lanterns and torches and weapons |
| 18:4 |
Then Jesus knowing all that was to befallhappen to him came forward and saidasked to them Whom doare you seeklooking for |
| 18:5 |
They answered him Jesus of Nazareth Jesus saidreplied to them I am he Judas who betrayed him was standing with them |
| 18:6 |
When heJesus said to them I am he they drewstepped back and fell to the ground |
| 18:7 |
Again he asked them Whom doare you seeklooking for And they said Jesus of Nazareth |
| 18:8 |
Jesus answered I told you that I am he; soSo if you seekare looking for me let these men go |
| 18:9 |
This was to fulfilfulfill the word whichthat he had spoken OfI thosedid whomnot thoulose gavesta mesingle Ione lostof notthose onewhom you gave me |
| 18:10 |
Then Simon Peter havingwho had a sword drew it and struck the high priests slave and cut off his right ear The slaves name was Malchus |
| 18:11 |
Jesus said to Peter Put your sword back into its sheath; shallAm I not to drink the cup whichthat the Father has given me |
| 18:12 |
So the band of soldiers and their captainofficer and the officersJewish ofpolice thearrested Jews seized Jesus and bound him |
| 18:13 |
First they ledtook him to Annas; forwho he was the father in law of Ca′iaphasCaiaphas whothe was high priest that year |
| 18:14 |
ItCaiaphas was Ca′iaphasthe one who had givenadvised counsel to the Jews that it was expedientbetter thatto have one manperson should die for the people |
| 18:15 |
Simon Peter followed Jesus and so did another disciple Asfollowed thisJesus Since that disciple was known to the high priest he enteredwent with Jesus into the courtcourtyard of the high priest along with Jesus |
| 18:16 |
whilebut Peter stoodwas standing outside at the doorgate So the other disciple who was known to the high priest went out and spoke to the maidwoman who keptguarded the doorgate and brought Peter in |
| 18:17 |
The maidwoman who kept the door said to Peter AreYou are not you also one of this mans disciples are you He said I am not |
| 18:18 |
Now the servantsslaves and officersthe police had made a charcoal fire because it was cold and they were standing around it and warming themselves; Peter also was standing with them standing and warming himself |
| 18:19 |
TheThen the high priest then questioned Jesus about his disciples and about his teaching |
| 18:20 |
Jesus answered him I have spoken openly to the world; I have always taught in synagogues and in the temple where all the Jews come together; I have said nothing secretlyin secret |
| 18:21 |
Why do you ask me Ask those who have heard me what I said to them; they know what I said |
| 18:22 |
When he had said this one of the officerspolice standing bynearby struck Jesus withon histhe handface saying Is that how you answer the high priest |
| 18:23 |
Jesus answered him If I have spoken wrongly beartestify witness to the wrong; butBut if I have spoken rightly why do you strike me |
| 18:24 |
Then Annas then sent him bound to Ca′iaphasCaiaphas the high priest |
| 18:25 |
Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself They saidasked to him AreYou are not you also one of his disciples are you He denied it and said I am not |
| 18:26 |
One of the servantsslaves of the high priest a kinsmanrelative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off asked Did I not see you in the garden with him |
| 18:27 |
Again Peter again denied it; and at oncethat moment the cock crowed |
| 18:28 |
Then they ledtook Jesus from theCaiaphas house of Ca′iaphas to thePilates praetoriumheadquarters It was early in the morning They themselves did not enter the praetoriumheadquarters so thatas theyto mightavoid notritual defilement and to be defiledable butto might eat the passoverPassover |
| 18:30 |
They answered him If this man were not ana evildoercriminal we would not have handed him over to you |
| 18:31 |
Pilate said to them Take him yourselves and judge him byaccording to your own law The Jews saidreplied toWe himare It is not lawfulpermitted for us to put anyanyone man to death |
| 18:32 |
This was to fulfilfulfill thewhat word which Jesus had spokensaid towhen showhe byindicated whatthe kind of death he was to die |
| 18:33 |
Then Pilate entered the praetoriumheadquarters again andsummoned called Jesus and saidasked to him Are you the King of the Jews |
| 18:34 |
Jesus answered Do you sayask this ofon your own accord or did others saytell it to you about me |
| 18:35 |
Pilate answeredreplied Am I am not a Jew am I Your own nation and the chief priests have handed you over to me; whatWhat have you done |
| 18:36 |
Jesus answered My kingshipkingdom is not offrom this world; ifIf my kingshipkingdom were offrom this world my servantsfollowers would fightbe thatfighting Ito mightkeep notme befrom being handed over to the Jews; butBut as it is my kingshipkingdom is not from thehere world |
| 18:37 |
Pilate saidasked to him So you are a king Jesus answered You say that I am a king For this I was born and for this I havecame come into the world to beartestify witness to the truth EveryEveryone one who isbelongs ofto the truth hearslistens to my voice |
| 18:38 |
Pilate saidasked to him What is truth After he had said this he went out to the Jews again and told them I find no crimecase inagainst him |
| 18:39 |
But you have a custom that I should release onesomeone man for you at the Passover; willDo you havewant me to release for you the King of the Jews |
| 18:40 |
They criedshouted outin againreply Not this man but Barab′basBarabbas Now Barab′basBarabbas was a robberbandit |
| 19:1 |
Then Pilate took Jesus and scourgedhad him flogged |
| 19:2 |
And the soldiers plaitedwove a crown of thorns and put it on his head and arrayedthey dressed him in a purple robe; |
| 19:3 |
theyThey camekept coming up to him saying Hail King of the Jews and struckstriking him withon theirthe handsface |
| 19:4 |
Pilate went out again and said to them SeeLook I am bringing him out to you thatto let you may know that I find no crimecase inagainst him |
| 19:5 |
So Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe Pilate said to them BeholdHere is the man |
| 19:6 |
When the chief priests and the officerspolice saw him they criedshouted out Crucify him crucifyCrucify him Pilate said to them Take him yourselves and crucify him; for I find no crimecase inagainst him |
| 19:7 |
The Jews answered him We have a law and byaccording to that law he ought to die because he has madeclaimed himselfto be the Son of God |
| 19:8 |
WhenNow when Pilate heard thesethis words he was the more afraid; than ever |
| 19:9 |
heHe entered thehis praetoriumheadquarters again and saidasked to Jesus Where are you from But Jesus gave him no answer |
| 19:10 |
Pilate therefore said to him YouDo willyou notrefuse to speak to me Do you not know that I have power to release you and power to crucify you |
| 19:11 |
Jesus answered him You would have no power over me unless it had been given you from above; therefore hethe one who deliveredhanded me over to you hasis theguilty of a greater sin |
| 19:12 |
UponFrom thisthen on Pilate soughttried to release him but the Jews cried out If you release this man you are notno Caesars friend; everyof onethe emperor Everyone who makesclaims himselfto be a king sets himself against Caesarthe emperor |
| 19:13 |
When Pilate heard these words he brought Jesus outoutside and sat down on the judgmentjudges seatbench at a place called The Stone Pavement andor in Hebrew Gab′bathaGabbatha |
| 19:14 |
Now it was the day of Preparation offor the Passover; and it was about thenoon sixth hour He said to the Jews BeholdHere is your King |
| 19:15 |
They cried out Away with him awayAway with him crucifyCrucify him Pilate saidasked to them Shall I crucify your King The chief priests answered We have no king but Caesarthe emperor |
| 19:16 |
Then he handed him over to them to be crucified So they took Jesus; |
| 19:17 |
Soand theycarrying tookthe Jesuscross andby himself he went out bearing his own cross to thewhat placeis called theThe placePlace of athe skullSkull which in Hebrew is called inGolgotha Hebrew Gol′gotha |
| 19:18 |
There they crucified him and with him two others one on either side andwith Jesus between them |
| 19:19 |
Pilate also wrotehad aan titleinscription written and put it on the cross; itIt read Jesus of Nazareth the King of the Jews |
| 19:20 |
Many of the Jews read this titleinscription forbecause the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew in Latin and in Greek |
| 19:21 |
TheThen the chief priests of the Jews then said to Pilate Do not write The King of the Jews but This man said I am King of the Jews |
| 19:23 |
When the soldiers had crucified Jesus they took his garmentsclothes and madedivided them into four parts one for each soldier; They also took his tunic; Butnow the tunic was withoutseamless seam woven in one piece from the top to bottom; |
| 19:24 |
soSo they said to one another Let us not tear it but cast lots for it to see whosewho itwill shallget beit This was to fulfilfulfill what the scripture says They parteddivided my garmentsclothes among themthemselves and for my clothing they cast lots |
| 19:25 |
SoAnd that is what the soldiers did thisMeanwhile But standing bynear the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mothers sister Mary the wife of Clopas and Mary Mag′daleneMagdalene |
| 19:26 |
When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearbeside her he said to his mother Woman beholdhere is your son |
| 19:27 |
Then he said to the disciple BeholdHere is your mother And from that hour the disciple took her tointo his own home |
| 19:28 |
After this when Jesus knowingknew that all was now finished he said in order to fulfilfulfill the scripture I thirstam thirsty |
| 19:29 |
A bowljar full of vinegarsour stoodwine was standing there; soSo they put a sponge full of the vinegarwine on a branch of hyssop and held it to his mouth |
| 19:30 |
When Jesus had received the vinegarwine he said It is finished; andThen he bowed his head and gave up his spirit |
| 19:31 |
Since it was the day of Preparation inthe orderJews todid preventnot want the bodies fromleft remaining on the cross onduring the sabbath forespecially because that sabbath was a high day theof Jewsgreat solemnity So they asked Pilate thatto theirhave the legs mightof bethe crucified men broken and thatthe theybodies mightremoved be taken away |
| 19:32 |
SoThen the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other who had been crucified with him; |
| 19:33 |
butBut when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead they did not break his legs |
| 19:34 |
ButInstead one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear and at once there came out blood and water came out |
| 19:35 |
He who saw itthis has bornetestified witness—hisso that you also may believe His testimony is true and he knows that he tells the truth—that you also may believe |
| 19:36 |
ForThese these things tookoccurred placeso that the scripture might be fulfilled NotNone aof bonehis ofbones him shall be broken |
| 19:37 |
And again another passage of scripture says They shallwill look on himthe one whom they have pierced |
| 19:38 |
After thisthese things Joseph of Arimathe′aArimathea who was a disciple of Jesus butthough secretlya forsecret one because of his fear of the Jews asked Pilate thatto helet mighthim take away the body of Jesus and Pilate gave him leavepermission; Soso he came and tookremoved away his body |
| 19:39 |
Nicode′musNicodemus also who had at first come to himJesus by night also came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes weighing about a hundred pounds weight |
| 19:40 |
They took the body of Jesus and boundwrapped it with the spices in linen cloths withaccording theto spices as is the burial custom of the Jews |
| 19:41 |
Now there was a garden in the place where he was crucified there was a garden and in the garden there was a new tomb wherein which no one had ever been laid |
| 19:42 |
SoAnd so because ofit was the Jewish day of Preparation asand the tomb was closenearby at hand they laid Jesus there |
| 20:1 |
NowEarly on the first day of the week while it was still dark Mary Mag′daleneMagdalene came to the tomb early while it was still dark and saw that the stone had been takenremoved away from the tomb |
| 20:3 |
Then Peter thenand came out with the other disciple set out and they went toward the tomb |
| 20:4 |
TheyThe bothtwo ranwere running together but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first; |
| 20:5 |
andHe stoopingbent down to look in heand saw the linen clothswrappings lying there but he did not go in |
| 20:6 |
Then Simon Peter came following him and went into the tomb; heHe saw the linen clothswrappings lying there |
| 20:7 |
and the napkincloth whichthat had been on hisJesus head not lying with the linen clothswrappings but rolled up in a place by itself |
| 20:9 |
for as yet they did not knowunderstand the scripture that he must rise from the dead |
| 20:10 |
Then the disciples wentreturned back to their homes |
| 20:11 |
But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb andAs as she wept she stoopedbent over to look into the tomb; |
| 20:12 |
and she saw two angels in white sitting where the body of Jesus had lainbeen lying one at the head and onethe other at the feet |
| 20:13 |
They said to her Woman why are you weeping She said to them BecauseThey they have taken away my Lord and I do not know where they have laid him |
| 20:14 |
SayingWhen she had said this she turned roundaround and saw Jesus standing there but she did not know that it was Jesus |
| 20:15 |
Jesus said to her Woman why are you weeping Whom doare you seeklooking for Supposing him to be the gardener she said to him Sir if you have carried him away tell me where you have laid him and I will take him away |
| 20:16 |
Jesus said to her Mary She turned and said to him in Hebrew RabRabbouni bo′ni which means Teacher |
| 20:17 |
Jesus said to her Do not hold on to me forbecause I have not yet ascended to the Father; butBut go to my brethrenbrothers and say to them I am ascending to my Father and your Father to my God and your God |
| 20:18 |
Mary Mag′daleneMagdalene went and saidannounced to the disciples I have seen the Lord; and she told them that he had said these things to her |
| 20:19 |
OnWhen theit was evening ofon that day the first day of the week and the doors beingof shutthe house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews Jesus came and stood among them and said to them Peace be with you |
| 20:20 |
WhenAfter he had said this he showed them his hands and his side Then the disciples wererejoiced glad when they saw the Lord |
| 20:21 |
Jesus said to them again Peace be with you As the Father has sent me even so I send you |
| 20:22 |
AndWhen when he had said this he breathed on them and said to them Receive the Holy Spirit |
| 20:23 |
If you forgive the sins of any they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any they are retained |
| 20:24 |
NowBut Thomas onewho ofwas called the twelveTwin calledone of the Twintwelve was not with them when Jesus came |
| 20:25 |
So the other disciples told him We have seen the Lord But he said to them Unless I see in his hands the printmark of the nails in his hands and placeput my finger in the mark of the nails and place my hand in his side I will not believe |
| 20:26 |
EightA daysweek later his disciples were again in the house and Thomas was with them TheAlthough the doors were shut but Jesus came and stood among them and said Peace be with you |
| 20:27 |
Then he said to Thomas Put your finger here and see my hands; andReach put out your hand and placeput it in my side; doDo not bedoubt faithless but believingbelieve |
| 20:29 |
Jesus said to him Have you believed because you have seen me Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe |
| 20:30 |
Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of thehis disciples which are not written in this book; |
| 20:31 |
butBut these are written so that you may come to believe that Jesus is the ChristMessiah the Son of God and that through believing you may have life in his name |
| 21:1 |
After thisthese things Jesus revealedshowed himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tibe′ri asTiberias; and he revealedshowed himself in this way |
| 21:2 |
Gathered there together were Simon Peter Thomas called the Twin Nathan′aNathanael el of Cana in Galilee the sons of Zeb′edeeZebedee and two others of his disciples were together |
| 21:3 |
Simon Peter said to them I am going fishing They said to him We will go with you They went out and got into the boat; but that night they caught nothing |
| 21:4 |
Just asafter daydaybreak was breaking Jesus stood on the beach; yetbut the disciples did not know that it was Jesus |
| 21:5 |
Jesus said to them Children you have youno any fish have you They answered him No |
| 21:6 |
He said to them Cast the net onto the right side of the boat and you will find some So they cast it and now they were not able to haul it in forbecause thethere quantitywere ofso many fish |
| 21:7 |
That disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter It is the Lord When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord he put on hissome clothes for he was strippednaked for work and sprangjumped into the sea |
| 21:8 |
But the other disciples came in the boat dragging the net full of fish for they were not far from the land butonly about a hundred yards off |
| 21:9 |
When they gothad outgone onashore land they saw a charcoal fire there with fish lying on it and bread |
| 21:11 |
So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore full of large fish a hundred and fifty three of them; and althoughthough there were so many the net was not torn |
| 21:12 |
Jesus said to them Come and have breakfast Now none of the disciples dared to ask him Who are you Theybecause they knew it was the Lord |
| 21:13 |
Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them and sodid the same with the fish |
| 21:14 |
This was now the third time that Jesus wasappeared revealed to the disciples after he was raised from the dead |
| 21:15 |
When they had finished breakfast Jesus said to Simon Peter Simon son of John do you love me more than these He said to him Yes Lord; you know that I love you HeJesus said to him Feed my lambs |
| 21:16 |
A second time he said to him Simon son of John do you love me He said to him Yes Lord; you know that I love you HeJesus said to him Tend my sheep |
| 21:17 |
He said to him the third time Simon son of John do you love me Peter wasfelt grievedhurt because he said to him the third time Do you love me And he said to him Lord you know everything; you know that I love you Jesus said to him Feed my sheep |
| 21:18 |
TrulyVery truly I saytell to you when you were youngyounger you girdedused yourselfto fasten your own belt and walkedto wherego wherever you would;wished butBut when you aregrow old you will stretch out your hands and anothersomeone else will girdfasten a belt around you and carrytake you where you do not wish to go |
| 21:19 |
ThisHe he said this to showindicate bythe whatkind of death by which he waswould to glorify God AndAfter after this he said to him Follow me |
| 21:20 |
Peter turned and saw following them the disciple whom Jesus loved following them; he was the one who had lainreclined closenext to hisJesus breast at the supper and had said Lord who is it that is going to betray you |
| 21:21 |
When Peter saw him he said to Jesus Lord what about thishim man |
| 21:23 |
TheSo sayingthe rumor spread abroadin among the brethrencommunity that this disciple waswould not to die; yetYet Jesus did not say to him that he waswould not to die but If it is my will that he remain until I come what is that to you |
| 21:24 |
This is the disciple who is bearingtestifying witness to these things and who has written thesethem things; and we know that his testimony is true |
| 21:25 |
But there are also many other things whichthat Jesus did; wereif every one of them towere be written down I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written |
