| 1:1 |
After the death of Joshua the peopleIsraelites of Israel inquired of the Lord Who shall go up first for us against the Canaanites to fight against them |
| 1:2 |
The Lord said Judah shall go up; behold I havehereby givengive the land into his hand |
| 1:3 |
And Judah said to Simeon his brother Simeon Come up with me into the territory allotted to me that we may fight against the Canaanites; andthen I likewisetoo will go with you into the territory allotted to you So Simeon went with him |
| 1:4 |
Then Judah went up and the Lord gave the Canaanites and the Per′izzitesPerizzites into their hand; and they defeated ten thousand of them at Bezek |
| 1:5 |
They came upon Ado′niAdoni be′zekbezek at Bezek and fought against him and defeated the Canaanites and the Per′izzitesPerizzites |
| 1:6 |
Ado′niAdoni be′zekbezek fled; but they pursued him and caught him and cut off his thumbs and hisbig great toes |
| 1:7 |
AndAdoni Ado′nibezek be′zek said Seventy kings with their thumbs and theirbig great toes cut off used to pick up scraps under my table; as I have done so God has requitedpaid me Andback theyThey brought him to Jerusalem and he died there |
| 1:8 |
AndThen the menpeople of Judah fought against Jerusalem and took it andThey smoteput it withto the edge of the sword and set the city on fire |
| 1:9 |
AndAfterward afterward the menpeople of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites who dweltlived in the hill country in the Negeb and in the lowland |
| 1:10 |
And Judah went against the Canaanites who dweltlived in Hebron now the name of Hebron was formerly Kir′iathKiriath ar′baarba; and they defeated Sheshai and Ahi′manAhiman and Talmai |
| 1:11 |
From there they went against the inhabitants of Debir Thethe name of Debir was formerly Kir′iathKiriath se′phersepher |
| 1:12 |
AndThen Caleb said HeWhoever who attacks Kir′iathKiriath se′phersepher and takes it I will give him Achsah my daughter Achsah as wife |
| 1:13 |
And Oth′niOthniel el the son of Kenaz Calebs younger brother took it; and he gave him Achsah his daughter Achsah as wife |
| 1:14 |
When she came to him she urged him to ask her father for a field; andAs she alighteddismounted from her assdonkey and Caleb said to her What do you wish |
| 1:15 |
She said to him Give me a present; since you have set me in the land of the Negeb give me also springsGulloth ofmayim waterSo And Caleb gave her theUpper upperGulloth springs and theLower lower springsGulloth |
| 1:16 |
AndThe the descendants of Hobab the Ken′iteKenite Moses father in law went up with the people of Judah from the city of palms into the wilderness of Judah which lies in the Negeb near Arad; andThen they went and settled with the peopleAmalekites |
| 1:17 |
And Judah went with Simeon his brother Simeon and they defeated the Canaanites who inhabited Zephath and utterlydevoted destroyed it Soto thedestruction nameSo of the city was called Hormah |
| 1:18 |
Judah also took Gaza with its territory andAshkelon Ash′kelon with its territory and Ekron with its territory |
| 1:19 |
AndThe the Lord was with Judah and he took possession of the hill country but he could not drive out the inhabitants of the plain because they had chariots of iron |
| 1:20 |
And Hebron was given to Caleb as Moses had said; and he drove out from it the three sons of Anak |
| 1:21 |
But the peopleBenjaminites of Benjamin did not drive out the Jeb′usitesJebusites who dweltlived in Jerusalem; so the Jeb′usitesJebusites have dweltlived within theJerusalem peopleamong ofthe BenjaminBenjaminites in Jerusalem to this day |
| 1:23 |
AndThe the house of Joseph sent toout spyspies outto Bethel Now the name of the city was formerly Luz |
| 1:24 |
AndWhen the spies saw a man coming out of the city and they said to him PrayShow show us the way into the city and we will deal kindly with you |
| 1:25 |
AndSo he showed them the way into the city; and they smoteput the city withto the edge of the sword but they let the man and all his family go |
| 1:26 |
AndSo the man went to the land of the Hittites and built a city and callednamed itsit name Luz; that is its name to this day |
| 1:27 |
Manas′sehManasseh did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth she′anshean and its villages or Ta′anachTaanach and its villages or the inhabitants of Dor and its villages or the inhabitants of Ibleam and its villages or the inhabitants of Megid′doMegiddo and its villages; but the Canaanites persistedcontinued into dwellinglive in that land |
| 1:28 |
When Israel grew strong they put the Canaanites to forced labor but did not utterlyin fact drive them out |
| 1:29 |
And E′phraimEphraim did not drive out the Canaanites who dweltlived in Gezer; but the Canaanites dweltlived among them in Gezer among them |
| 1:30 |
Zeb′ulunZebulun did not drive out the inhabitants of Kitron or the inhabitants of Na′halolNahalol; but the Canaanites dweltlived among them and became subject to forced labor |
| 1:32 |
but the Asherites dweltlived among the Canaanites the inhabitants of the land; for they did not drive them out |
| 1:33 |
Naph′taliNaphtali did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth she′meshshemesh or the inhabitants of Beth anath but dweltlived among the Canaanites the inhabitants of the land; nevertheless the inhabitants of Beth she′meshshemesh and of Beth anath became subject to forced labor for them |
| 1:34 |
The Amorites pressed the Danites back into the hill country; for they did not allow them to come down to the plain; |
| 1:35 |
theThe Amorites persistedcontinued into dwellinglive in Har heres in Ai′jalonAijalon and in ShaShaalbim al′bim but the hand of the house of Joseph rested heavily uponon them and they became subject to forced labor |
| 1:36 |
AndThe the border of the Amorites ran from the ascent of Akrab′bimAkrabbim from Sela and upward |
| 2:1 |
Now the angel of the Lord went up from Gilgal to Bochim Andand he said I brought you up from Egypt and brought you into the land whichthat I sworehad topromised give to your fathersancestors I said I will never break my covenant with you |
| 2:2 |
andFor youyour shallpart do not make noa covenant with the inhabitants of this land; youtear shall break down their altars But you have not obeyed my command WhatSee iswhat this you have done |
| 2:4 |
When the angel of the Lord spoke these words to all the peopleIsraelites of Israel the people lifted up their voices and wept |
| 2:5 |
AndSo they callednamed the name of that place Bochim; and there they sacrificed there to the Lord |
| 2:6 |
When Joshua dismissed the people the peopleIsraelites ofall Israel went each to histheir inheritanceown inheritances to take possession of the land |
| 2:7 |
AndThe the people servedworshiped the Lord all the days of Joshua and all the days of the elders who outlived Joshua who had seen all the great work whichthat the Lord had done for Israel |
| 2:8 |
And Joshua the son of Nun the servant of the Lord died at the age of one hundred and ten years |
| 2:9 |
AndSo they buried him within the bounds of his inheritance in Tim′nathTimnath he′resheres in the hill country of E′phraimEphraim north of theMount mountainGaash of Ga′ash |
| 2:10 |
AndMoreover all that whole generation alsowas were gathered to their fathers;ancestors and there arose another generation grew up after them who did not know the Lord or the work whichthat he had done for Israel |
| 2:11 |
AndThen the peopleIsraelites of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the Lord and servedworshiped the Ba′alsBaals; |
| 2:12 |
and they forsookabandoned the Lord the God of their fathersancestors who had brought them out of the land of Egypt; they wentfollowed after other gods from among the gods of the peoples who were roundall aboutaround them and bowed down to them; and they provoked the Lord to anger |
| 2:13 |
They forsookabandoned the Lord and servedworshiped theBaal Ba′als and the Ash′tarothAstartes |
| 2:14 |
So the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel and he gave them over to plunderers who plundered them; and he sold them into the power of their enemies roundall aboutaround so that they could no longer withstand their enemies |
| 2:15 |
Whenever they marched out the hand of the Lord was against them forto evilbring misfortune as the Lord had warned them and as the Lord had sworn to them; and they were in soregreat straitsdistress |
| 2:16 |
Then the Lord raised up judges who saveddelivered them out of the power of those who plundered them |
| 2:17 |
AndYet yet they did not listen even to their judges; for they playedlusted the harlot after other gods and bowed down to them; theyThey soon turned aside from the way in which their fathersancestors had walked who had obeyed the commandments of the Lord; and they did not dofollow sotheir example |
| 2:18 |
Whenever the Lord raised up judges for them the Lord was with the judge and he saveddelivered them from the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge; for the Lord waswould be moved to pity by their groaning because of those who afflictedpersecuted and oppressed them |
| 2:19 |
But whenever the judge died they turnedwould backrelapse and behavedbehave worse than their fathersancestors goingfollowing after other gods servingworshiping them and bowing down to them; theyThey didwould not drop any of their practices or their stubborn ways |
| 2:20 |
So the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel; and he said Because this people have transgressed my covenant whichthat I commanded their fathersancestors and have not obeyed my voice |
| 2:21 |
I will notno henceforthlonger drive out before them any of the nations that Joshua left when he died |
| 2:22 |
thatIn byorder themto I may test Israel whether or not they willwould take care to walk in the way of the Lord as their fathersancestors did or not |
| 2:23 |
So the Lord had left those nations not driving them out at once and hehad did not givehanded them intoover theto power of Joshua |
| 3:1 |
Now these are the nations whichthat the Lord left to test Israelall bythose them that is all in Israel who had no experience of any war in Canaan; |
| 3:2 |
it was only that thesuccessive generations of theIsraelites people of Israel might know war thatto he might teach warthose towho suchhad atno leastexperience asof had not known it before: |
| 3:3 |
These are the nations: the five lords of the Philistines and all the Canaanites and the Sido′niansSidonians and the Hivites who dweltlived on Mount Lebanon from Mount Ba′alBaal her′monhermon as far as theLebo entrancehamath of Hamath |
| 3:4 |
They were for the testing of Israel to know whether Israel would obey the commandments of the Lord which he commanded their fathersancestors by Moses |
| 3:5 |
So the peopleIsraelites oflived Israel dwelt among the Canaanites the Hittites the Amorites the Per′izzitesPerizzites the Hivites and the Jeb′usitesJebusites; |
| 3:6 |
and they took their daughters toas themselveswives for wivesthemselves and their own daughters they gave to their sons; and they servedworshiped their gods |
| 3:7 |
AndThe theIsraelites people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the Lord forgetting the Lord their God and servingworshiping the Ba′alsBaals and the Ashe′rothAsherahs |
| 3:8 |
Therefore the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel and he sold them into the hand of Cu′shanKing rishatha′imCushan kingrishathaim of Mesopota′miaAram naharaim; and the peopleIsraelites of Israel served Cu′shanCushan rishatha′imrishathaim eight years |
| 3:9 |
But when the peopleIsraelites ofcried Israelout cried to the Lord the Lord raised up a deliverer for the peopleIsraelites of Israel who delivered them Oth′niOthniel el the son of Kenaz Calebs younger brother |
| 3:10 |
The Spiritspirit of the Lord came upon him and he judged Israel; he went out to war and the Lord gave Cu′shanKing rishatha′imCushan kingrishathaim of Mesopota′miaAram into his hand; and his hand prevailed over Cu′shanCushan rishatha′imrishathaim |
| 3:11 |
So the land had rest forty years Then Oth′niOthniel el the son of Kenaz died |
| 3:12 |
AndThe theIsraelites people of Israel again did what was evil in the sight of the Lord; and the Lord strengthened King Eglon the king of Moab against Israel because they had done what was evil in the sight of the Lord |
| 3:13 |
HeIn gatheredalliance towith himself the Ammonites and the Amal′ekitesAmalekites andhe went and defeated Israel; and they took possession of the city of palms |
| 3:14 |
AndSo the peopleIsraelites ofserved IsraelKing served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years |
| 3:15 |
But when the peopleIsraelites ofcried Israelout cried to the Lord the Lord raised up for them a deliverer Ehud the son of Gera the Benjaminite a left handed man The peopleIsraelites of Israel sent tribute by him to King Eglon the king of Moab |
| 3:16 |
And Ehud made for himself a sword with two edges a cubit in length; and he girdedfastened it on his right thigh under his clothes |
| 3:17 |
AndThen he presented the tribute to King Eglon king of Moab Now Eglon was a very fat man |
| 3:18 |
AndWhen when Ehud had finished presenting the tribute he sent away the people thatwho carried the tribute on their way |
| 3:19 |
But he himself turned back at the sculptured stones near Gilgal and said I have a secret message for you O king AndSo hethe commandedking said Silence Andand all his attendants went out from his presence |
| 3:20 |
And Ehud came to him aswhile he was sitting alone in his cool roof chamber Andand Ehud said I have a message from God for you AndSo he aroserose from his seat |
| 3:21 |
AndThen Ehud reached with his left hand took the sword from his right thigh and thrust it into hisEglons belly; |
| 3:22 |
and the hilt also went in after the blade and the fat closed over the blade for he did not draw the sword out of his belly; and the dirt came out |
| 3:23 |
Then Ehud went out into the vestibule and closed the doors of the roof chamber uponon him and locked them |
| 3:24 |
WhenAfter he had gone the servants came; andWhen when they saw that the doors of the roof chamber were locked they thought He ismust onlybe relieving himself in the closet of the cool chamber |
| 3:25 |
AndSo they waited tilluntil they were utterlyembarrassed atWhen a loss; but when he still did not open the doors of the roof chamber they took the key and opened them; andThere therewas lay their lord lying dead on the floor |
| 3:26 |
Ehud escaped while they delayed and passed beyond the sculptured stones and escaped to SeSeirah i′rah |
| 3:27 |
When he arrived he sounded the trumpet in the hill country of E′phraimEphraim; and the peopleIsraelites of Israel went down with him from the hill country having him at their head |
| 3:28 |
AndHe he said to them Follow after me; for the Lord has given your enemies the Moabites into your hand So they went down after him and seized the fords of the Jordan against the Moabites and allowed notno aone man to passcross over |
| 3:29 |
AndAt that time they killed at that time about ten thousand of the Moabites all strong able bodied men; notno aone man escaped |
| 3:30 |
So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel And the land had rest for eighty years |
| 3:31 |
After him wascame Shamgar the son of Anath who killed six hundred of the Philistines with an oxgoad; andHe he too delivered Israel |
| 4:1 |
AndThe theIsraelites people of Israel again did what was evil in the sight of the Lord after Ehud died |
| 4:2 |
AndSo the Lord sold them into the hand of King Jabin king of Canaan who reigned in Hazor; the commander of his army was Sis′eraSisera who dweltlived in Haro′shethHarosheth ha goiim |
| 4:3 |
Then the peopleIsraelites ofcried Israelout cried to the Lord for help; for he had nine hundred chariots of iron and had oppressed the peopleIsraelites of Israel cruelly for twenty years |
| 4:4 |
NowAt Deb′orahthat time Deborah a prophetess the wife of Lap′pidothLappidoth was judging Israel at that time |
| 4:5 |
She used to sit under the palm of Deb′orahDeborah between Ramah and Bethel in the hill country of E′phraimEphraim; and the peopleIsraelites of Israel came up to her for judgment |
| 4:6 |
She sent and summoned Barak the son of Abin′oAbinoam am from Kedesh in Naph′taliNaphtali and said to him The Lord the God of Israel commands you Go gathertake yourposition men at Mount Tabor takingbringing ten thousand from the tribe of Naph′taliNaphtali and the tribe of Zeb′ulunZebulun |
| 4:7 |
And I will draw out Sis′eraSisera the general of Jabins army to meet you by the riverWadi Kishon with his chariots and his troops; and I will give him into your hand |
| 4:9 |
And she said I will surely go with you; nevertheless the road on which you are going will not lead to your glory for the Lord will sell Sis′eraSisera into the hand of a woman Then Deb′orahDeborah arosegot up and went with Barak to Kedesh |
| 4:10 |
And Barak summoned Zeb′ulunZebulun and Naph′taliNaphtali to Kedesh; and ten thousand menwarriors went up atbehind his heelshim; and Deb′orahDeborah went up with him |
| 4:11 |
Now Heber the Ken′iteKenite had separated from the Ken′itesother Kenites that is the descendants of Hobab the father in law of Moses and had pitchedencamped his tent as far away as theElon oakbezaanannim in Za anan′nim which is near Kedesh |
| 4:12 |
When Sis′eraSisera was told that Barak the son of Abin′oAbinoam am had gone up to Mount Tabor |
| 4:13 |
Sis′eraSisera called out all his chariots nine hundred chariots of iron and all the mentroops who were with him from Haro′shethHarosheth ha goiim to the riverWadi Kishon |
| 4:14 |
AndThen Deb′orahDeborah said to Barak Up For this is the day inon which the Lord has given Sis′eraSisera into your hand DoesThe notLord theis Lordindeed gogoing out before you So Barak went down from Mount Tabor with ten thousand menwarriors following him |
| 4:15 |
And the Lord routedthrew Sis′eraSisera and all his chariots and all his army beforeinto Baraka atpanic thebefore edge of the swordBarak; andSisera Sis′eragot alighteddown from his chariot and fled away on foot |
| 4:16 |
Andwhile Barak pursued the chariots and the army to Haro′shethHarosheth ha goiim andAll all the army of Sis′eraSisera fell by the edge of the sword; notno aone man was left |
| 4:17 |
ButNow Sis′eraSisera had fled away on foot to the tent of Ja′elJael the wife of Heber the Ken′iteKenite; for there was peace between King Jabin the king of Hazor and the houseclan of Heber the Ken′iteKenite |
| 4:18 |
AndJael Ja′el came out to meet Sis′eraSisera and said to him Turn aside my lord turn aside to me; have no fear So he turned aside to her into the tent and she covered him with a rug |
| 4:19 |
AndThen he said to her PrayPlease give me a little water to drink; for I am thirsty So she opened a skin of milk and gave him a drink and covered him |
| 4:20 |
AndHe he said to her Stand at the doorentrance of the tent and if anyanybody man comes and asks you Is anyanyone one here say No |
| 4:21 |
But Ja′elJael the wife of Heber took a tent peg and took a hammer in her hand and went softly to him and drove the peg into his temple tilluntil it went down into the ground as —he was lying fast asleep from weariness—and So he died |
| 4:22 |
AndThen behold as Barak pursuedcame Sis′erain Ja′elpursuit of Sisera Jael went out to meet him and said to him Come and I will show you the man whom you are seeking So he went ininto to her tent; and there laywas Sis′eraSisera lying dead with the tent peg in his temple |
| 4:23 |
So on that day God subdued King Jabin the king of Canaan before the peopleIsraelites of Israel |
| 4:24 |
AndThen the hand of the peopleIsraelites of Israel bore harder and harder on King Jabin the king of Canaan until they destroyed King Jabin king of Canaan |
| 5:1 |
Then sangDeborah Deb′orah and Barak the son of Abin′oAbinoam amsang on that day saying: |
| 5:2 |
ThatWhen thelocks leadersare tooklong the lead in Israel thatwhen the people offeredoffer themselves willingly— bless the Lord |
| 5:4 |
Lord when thouyou didstwent goout forth from Se′irSeir when thouyou didstmarched march from the region of Edom the earth trembled and the heavens droppedpoured yea the clouds droppedindeed poured water |
| 5:5 |
The mountains quaked before the Lord yonthe One of Sinai before the Lord the God of Israel |
| 5:6 |
In the days of Shamgar son of Anath in the days of Ja′elJael caravans ceased and travelers kept to the byways |
| 5:7 |
The peasantry ceasedprospered in Israel they ceasedgrew untilfat on plunder because you arose Deb′orahDeborah arose as a mother in Israel |
| 5:10 |
Tell of it you who ride on tawnywhite assesdonkeys you who sit on rich carpets and you who walk by the way |
| 5:12 |
Awake awake Deb′orahDeborah Awake awake utter a song Arise Barak lead away your captives O son of Abin′o amAbinoam |
| 5:14 |
From E′phraimEphraim they set out thither into the valley following you Benjamin with your kinsmenkin; from Machir marched down the commanders and from Zeb′ulunZebulun those who bear the marshals staff; |
| 5:15 |
the princeschiefs of Is′sacharIssachar came with Deb′orahDeborah and Is′sacharIssachar faithful to Barak; into the valley they rushed forthout at his heels Among the clans of Reuben there were great searchings of heart |
| 5:18 |
Zeb′ulunZebulun is a people that jeopardedscorned their lives to the death; Naph′taliNaphtali too on the heights of the field |
| 5:19 |
The kings came they fought; then fought the kings of Canaan at Ta′anachTaanach by the waters of Megid′doMegiddo; they got no spoils of silver |
| 5:20 |
FromThe heavenstars fought thefrom starsheaven from their courses they fought against Sis′eraSisera |
| 5:23 |
Curse Meroz says the angel of the Lord curse bitterly its inhabitants because they camedid not come to the help of the Lord to the help of the Lord against the mighty |
| 5:24 |
Most blessed of women be Ja′elJael the wife of Heber the Ken′iteKenite of tent dwelling women most blessed |
| 5:26 |
She put her hand to the tent peg and her right hand to the workmens mallet; she struck Sis′eraSisera a blow she crushed his head she shattered and pierced his temple |
| 5:28 |
Out of the window she peered the mother of Sis′eraSisera gazed through the lattice: Why is his chariot so long in coming Why tarry the hoofbeats of his chariots |
| 5:29 |
Her wisest ladies make answer nayindeed she givesanswers answerthe toquestion herself: |
| 5:30 |
Are they not finding and dividing the spoil— A maidengirl or two for every man; spoil of dyed stuffs for Sis′eraSisera spoil of dyed stuffs embroidered two pieces of dyed work embroidered for my neck as spoil |
| 5:31 |
So perish all thineyour enemies O Lord But thymay your friends be like the sun as heit rises in hisits might And the land had rest for forty years |
| 6:1 |
The peopleIsraelites of Israel did what was evil in the sight of hethe Lord; and the Lord gave them into the hand of Mid′ianMidian seven years |
| 6:2 |
AndThe the hand of Mid′ianMidian prevailed over Israel; and because of Mid′ianMidian the peopleIsraelites ofprovided Israel made for themselves thehiding densplaces which are in the mountains and the caves and the strongholds |
| 6:3 |
For whenever the Israelites put in seed the Mid′ianitesMidianites and the Amal′ekitesAmalekites and the people of the Easteast would come up andagainst attack them; |
| 6:4 |
theyThey would encamp against them and destroy the produce of the land as far as the neighborhood of Gaza and leave no sustenance in Israel and no sheep or ox or assdonkey |
| 6:5 |
For they and their livestock would come up withand theirthey cattlewould andeven bring their tents comingas likethick as locusts for number; bothneither they andnor their camels could not be counted; so that they wasted the land as they came in |
| 6:6 |
AndThus Israel was broughtgreatly veryimpoverished low because of Mid′ianMidian; and the peopleIsraelites of Israel cried forout help to the Lord for help |
| 6:7 |
When the peopleIsraelites of Israel cried to the Lord on account of the Mid′ianitesMidianites |
| 6:8 |
the Lord sent a prophet to the people of IsraelIsraelites; and he said to them Thus says the Lord the God of Israel: I led you up from Egypt and brought you out of the house of bondageslavery; |
| 6:10 |
and I said to you I am the Lord your God; you shall not pay reverence to the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwelllive But you have not given heed to my voice |
| 6:11 |
Now the angel of the Lord came and sat under the oak at Ophrah which belonged to Jo′ashJoash the Abiez′riteAbiezrite as his son Gideon was beating out wheat in the wine press to hide it from the Mid′ianitesMidianites |
| 6:12 |
AndThe the angel of the Lord appeared to him and said to him The Lord is with you you mighty manwarrior of valor |
| 6:13 |
And Gideon saidanswered to him PrayBut sir if the Lord is with us why then has all this befallenhappened to us And where are all his wonderful deeds whichthat our fathersancestors recounted to us saying Did not the Lord bring us up from Egypt But now the Lord has cast us off and given us into the hand of Mid′ianMidian |
| 6:14 |
AndThen the Lord turned to him and said Go in this might of yours and deliver Israel from the hand of Mid′ianMidian; doI nothereby Icommission send you |
| 6:15 |
AndHe heresponded saidBut tosir him Pray Lord how can I deliver Israel BeholdMy my clan is the weakest in Manas′sehManasseh and I am the least in my family |
| 6:16 |
AndThe the Lord said to him But I will be with you and you shall smitestrike down the Mid′ianitesMidianites asevery one manof them |
| 6:17 |
AndThen he said to him If now I have found favor with theeyou then show me a sign that it is thouyou who speakestspeak with me |
| 6:18 |
Do not depart from here I pray thee until I come to theeyou and bring out my present and set it before theeyou And he said I will stay tilluntil you return |
| 6:20 |
AndThe the angel of God said to him Take the meat and the unleavened cakes and put them on this rock and pour out the broth over them And he did so |
| 6:21 |
Then the angel of the Lord reached out the tip of the staff that was in his hand and touched the meat and the unleavened cakes; and therefire sprang up fire from the rock and consumed the fleshmeat and the unleavened cakes; and the angel of the Lord vanished from his sight |
| 6:22 |
Then Gideon perceived that heit was the angel of the Lord; and Gideon said AlasHelp Ome Lord God For now I have seen the angel of the Lord face to face |
| 6:24 |
Then Gideon built an altar there to the Lord and called it The Lord is peace To this day it still stands at Ophrah which belongs to the Abiez′ritesAbiezrites |
| 6:25 |
That night the Lord said to him Take your fathers bull the second bull seven years old and pull down the altar of Ba′alBaal whichthat belongs to your father has and cut down the Ashe′rahsacred pole that is beside it; |
| 6:26 |
and build an altar to the Lord your God on the top of the stronghold here with stones laid in dueproper order; then take the second bull and offer it as a burnt offering with the wood of the Ashe′rahsacred whichpole that you shall cut down |
| 6:27 |
So Gideon took ten men of his servants and did as the Lord had told him; but because he was too afraid of his family and the mentownspeople of the town to do it by day he did it by night |
| 6:28 |
When the mentownspeople of the town rose early in the morning behold the altar of Ba′alBaal was broken down and the Ashe′rahsacred pole beside it was cut down and the second bull was offered uponon the altar whichthat had been built |
| 6:29 |
AndSo they said to one another Who has done this thingAfter Andsearching after they had made search and inquiredinquiring they saidwere told Gideon the son of Jo′ashJoash hasdid doneit this thing |
| 6:30 |
Then the mentownspeople of the town said to Jo′ashJoash Bring out your son so that he may die for he has pulled down the altar of Ba′alBaal and cut down the Ashe′rahsacred pole beside it |
| 6:31 |
But Jo′ashJoash said to all who were arrayed against him Will you contend for Ba′alBaal Or will you defend his cause Whoever contends for him shall be put to death by morning If he is a god let him contend for himself because his altar has been pulled down |
| 6:32 |
Therefore on that day heGideon was called Jerubba′alJerubbaal that is to say Let Ba′alBaal contend against him because he pulled down his altar |
| 6:33 |
Then all the Mid′ianitesMidianites and the Amal′ekitesAmalekites and the people of the Easteast came together and crossing the Jordan they encamped in the Valley of Jezreel |
| 6:34 |
But the Spiritspirit of the Lord took possession of Gideon; and he sounded the trumpet and the Abiez′ritesAbiezrites were called out to follow him |
| 6:35 |
AndHe he sent messengers throughout all Manas′seh;Manasseh and they too were called out to follow him AndHe healso sent messengers to Asher Zeb′ulunZebulun and Naph′tali;Naphtali and they went up to meet them |
| 6:36 |
Then Gideon said to God IfIn thouorder wiltto see whether you will deliver Israel by my hand as thouyou hasthave said |
| 6:37 |
behold I am layinggoing to lay a fleece of wool on the threshing floor; if there is dew on the fleece alone and it is dry on all the ground then I shall know that thouyou wiltwill deliver Israel by my hand as thouyou hasthave said |
| 6:39 |
Then Gideon said to God LetDo not thylet your anger burn against me let me speak butone thismore oncetime; pray let me please make trial onlywith thisthe oncefleece withjust theonce fleecemore; pray let it be dry only on the fleece and on all the ground let there be dew |
| 6:40 |
And God did so that night; forIt it was dry on the fleece only and on all the ground there was dew |
| 7:1 |
Then Jerubba′alJerubbaal that is Gideon and all the peopletroops whothat were with him rose early and encamped beside the spring of Harod; and the camp of Mid′ianMidian was north of them bybelow the hill of Moreh in the valley |
| 7:2 |
The Lord said to Gideon The peopletroops with you are too many for me to give the Mid′ianitesMidianites into their hand lest Israel vauntwould themselvesonly againsttake the credit away from me saying My own hand has delivered me |
| 7:3 |
Now therefore proclaim this in the earshearing of the peopletroops saying Whoever is fearful and trembling let him return home AndThus Gideon testedsifted them out; twenty two thousand returned and ten thousand remained |
| 7:4 |
AndThen the Lord said to Gideon The peopletroops are still too many; take them down to the water and I will testsift them out for you there; andWhen he of whom I say to you This manone shall go with you he shall go with you; and anywhen of whom I say to you This manone shall not go with you he shall not go |
| 7:5 |
So he brought the peopletroops down to the water; and the Lord said to Gideon EveryAll onethose thatwho lapslap the water with histheir tonguetongues as a dog laps you shall setput byto himselfone side; likewiseall everythose onewho thatkneel kneels down to drink putting their hands to their mouths you shall put to the other side |
| 7:6 |
AndThe the number of those that lapped putting their hands to their mouths was three hundred men; but all the rest of the peopletroops knelt down to drink water |
| 7:7 |
AndThen the Lord said to Gideon With the three hundred men that lapped I will deliver you and give the Mid′ianitesMidianites into your hand; andLet let all the others go every man to histheir homehomes |
| 7:8 |
So he took the jars of the peopletroops from their hands and their trumpets; and he sent all the rest of Israel everyback man to histheir tentown tents but retained the three hundred men;The and the camp of Mid′ianMidian was below him in the valley |
| 7:9 |
That same night the Lord said to him AriseGet goup downattack against the camp; for I have given it into your hand |
| 7:10 |
But if you fear to goattack down go down to the camp with Purah your servant Purah; |
| 7:11 |
and you shall hear what they say and afterward your hands shall be strengthened to goattack down against the camp Then he went down with Purah his servant Purah to the outposts of the armed men that were in the camp |
| 7:12 |
AndThe theMidianites Mid′ianites and the Amal′ekitesAmalekites and all the people of the Easteast lay along the valley likeas locuststhick foras multitudelocusts; and their camels were without number countless as the sand whichon is upon the seashore for multitude |
| 7:13 |
When Gideon camearrived beholdthere was a man was telling a dream to his comrade; and he said Behold I dreamedhad a dream; and loin it a cake of barley bread tumbled into the camp of Mid′ianMidian and came to the tent and struck it so that it fell; andit turned it upside down soand that the tent laycollapsed flat |
| 7:14 |
And his comrade answered This is no other than the sword of Gideon the son of Jo′ashJoash a man of Israel; into his hand God has given Mid′ianMidian and all the hostarmy |
| 7:15 |
When Gideon heard the telling of the dream and its interpretation he worshiped; and he returned to the camp of Israel and said AriseGet up; for the Lord has given the hostarmy of Mid′ianMidian into your hand |
| 7:16 |
AndAfter he divided the three hundred men into three companies and put trumpets into the hands of all of them and empty jars with torches inside the jars |
| 7:17 |
And he said to them Look at me and do likewisethe same; when I come to the outskirts of the camp do as I do |
| 7:18 |
When I blow the trumpet I and all who are with me then you also blow the trumpets alsoaround onthe everywhole side of all the camp and shout For the Lord and for Gideon |
| 7:19 |
So Gideon and the hundred men who were with him came to the outskirts of the camp at the beginning of the middle watch when they had just set the watch; and they blew the trumpets and smashed the jars that were in their hands |
| 7:20 |
AndSo the three companies blew the trumpets and broke the jars holding in their left hands the torches and in their right hands the trumpets to blow; and they cried A sword for the Lord and for Gideon |
| 7:21 |
TheyEvery man stood every man in his place roundall aboutaround the camp and all the armymen in camp ran; they cried out and fled |
| 7:22 |
When they blew the three hundred trumpets the Lord set every mans sword against his fellow and against all the army; and the army fled as far as Beth shit′tahshittah toward Zer′erahZererah as far as the border of A′belAbel meho′lahmeholah by Tabbath |
| 7:23 |
And the men of Israel were called out from Naph′taliNaphtali and from Asher and from all Manas′sehManasseh and they pursued after Mid′ianthe Midianites |
| 7:24 |
AndThen Gideon sent messengers throughout all the hill country of E′phraimEphraim saying Come down against the Mid′ianitesMidianites and seize the waters against them as far as Beth bar′ahbarah and also the Jordan So all the men of E′phraimEphraim were called out and they seized the waters as far as Beth bar′ahbarah and also the Jordan |
| 7:25 |
AndThey theycaptured took the two princescaptains of Mid′ianMidian Oreb and Zeeb; they killed Oreb at the rock of Oreb and Zeeb they killed at the wine press of Zeeb as they pursued Mid′ian;the andMidianites theyThey brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon beyond the Jordan |
| 8:1 |
AndThen the menEphraimites of E′phraim said to him What ishave this that you have done to us not to call us when you went to fight withagainst Mid′ianthe Midianites And they upbraided him violently |
| 8:2 |
AndSo he said to them What have I done now in comparison with you Is not the gleaning of the grapes of E′phraimEphraim better than the vintage of AbiAbiezer e′zer |
| 8:3 |
God has given into your hands the princescaptains of Mid′ianMidian Oreb and Zeeb; what have I been able to do in comparison with you ThenWhen he said this their anger against him was abated when he had said thissubsided |
| 8:4 |
AndThen Gideon came to the Jordan and passedcrossed over he and the three hundred men who were with him faintexhausted yetand pursuingfamished |
| 8:5 |
So he said to the menpeople of Succoth PrayPlease give some loaves of bread to themy peoplefollowers who follow me; for they are faintexhausted and I am pursuing after Zebah and Zalmun′naZalmunna the kings of Mid′ianMidian |
| 8:6 |
AndBut the officials of Succoth said AreDo Zebahyou andalready Zalmun′nahave already in your handpossession the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna that we should give bread to your army |
| 8:7 |
And Gideon saidreplied Well then when the Lord has given Zebah and Zalmun′naZalmunna into my hand I will flailtrample your flesh withon the thorns of the wilderness and withon briers |
| 8:8 |
AndFrom from there he went up to Penu′elPenuel and spokemade tothe themsame inrequest theof same waythem; and the menpeople of Penu′elPenuel answered him as the menpeople of Succoth had answered |
| 8:9 |
AndSo he said to the menpeople of Penu′elPenuel When I come againback invictorious peace I will break down this tower |
| 8:10 |
Now Zebah and Zalmun′naZalmunna were in Karkor with their army about fifteen thousand men all who were left of all the army of the people of the Easteast; for thereone had fallen a hundred and twenty thousand men whobearing drewarms thehad swordfallen |
| 8:11 |
AndSo Gideon went up by the caravan route east of Nobah and Jog′behahJogbehah and attacked the army; for the army was off its guard |
| 8:12 |
And Zebah and Zalmun′naZalmunna fled; and he pursued them and took the two kings of Mid′ianMidian Zebah and Zalmun′naZalmunna and he threw all the army into a panic |
| 8:13 |
ThenWhen Gideon the son of Jo′ashJoash returned from the battle by the ascent of Heres |
| 8:14 |
And he caught a young man one of the people of Succoth and questioned him; and he wrotelisted down for him the officials and elders of Succoth seventy seven menpeople |
| 8:15 |
AndThen he came to the menpeople of Succoth and said BeholdHere are Zebah and Zalmun′naZalmunna about whom you taunted me saying AreDo Zebahyou andalready Zalmun′nahave already in your handpossession the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna that we should give bread to your mentroops who are faintexhausted |
| 8:16 |
AndSo he took the elders of the city and he took thorns of the wilderness and briers and with them taughthe trampled the menpeople of Succoth |
| 8:17 |
AndHe healso broke down the tower of Penu′elPenuel and slewkilled the men of the city |
| 8:18 |
Then he said to Zebah and Zalmun′naZalmunna WhereWhat areabout the men whom you slewkilled at Tabor They answered As you are so were they every one of them; they resembled the sons of a king |
| 8:19 |
And he saidreplied They were my brothers the sons of my mother; as the Lord lives if you had saved them alive I would not slaykill you |
| 8:20 |
AndSo he said to Jether his firstfirstborn bornGo Risekill and slay them But the youthboy did not draw his sword; for he was afraid because he was still a youthboy |
| 8:21 |
Then Zebah and Zalmun′naZalmunna said RiseYou yourselfcome and fallkill upon us; for as the man is so is his strength AndSo Gideon aroseproceeded andto slewkill Zebah and Zalmun′naZalmunna; and he took the crescents that were on the necks of their camels |
| 8:22 |
Then the menIsraelites of Israel said to Gideon Rule over us you and your son and your grandson also; for you have delivered us out of the hand of Mid′ianMidian |
| 8:24 |
AndThen Gideon said to them Let me make a request of you; each of you give me everyan manearring ofhe youhas thetaken earringsas ofbooty hisFor spoilthe Forenemy they had golden earrings because they were Ish′maelitesIshmaelites |
| 8:25 |
And they answered We will willingly give them Andthey answered So they spread a garment and everyeach manthrew castinto in it thean earringsearring ofhe hishad spoiltaken as booty |
| 8:26 |
AndThe the weight of the golden earrings that he requested was one thousand seven hundred shekels of gold; besidesapart from the crescents and the pendants and the purple garments worn by the kings of Mid′ianMidian and besides the collars that were abouton the necks of their camels |
| 8:27 |
And Gideon made an ephod of it and put it in his citytown in Ophrah; and all Israel playedprostituted thethemselves harlotto after it there and it became a snare to Gideon and to his family |
| 8:28 |
So Mid′ianMidian was subdued before the peopleIsraelites of Israel and they lifted up their heads no more AndSo the land had rest forty years in the days of Gideon |
| 8:29 |
Jerubba′alJerubbaal the son of Jo′ashJoash went andto dweltlive in his own house |
| 8:31 |
AndHis his concubine who was in Shechem also bore him a son and he callednamed hishim nameAbimelech Abim′elech |
| 8:32 |
AndThen Gideon the son of Jo′ashJoash died inat a good old age and was buried in the tomb of Jo′ash his father Joash at Ophrah of the Abiez′ritesAbiezrites |
| 8:33 |
As soon as Gideon died the peopleIsraelites ofrelapsed Israel turned again and playedprostituted thethemselves harlotwith after the Ba′alsBaals andmaking madeBaal Ba′alberith be′rith their god |
| 8:34 |
AndThe theIsraelites people of Israel did not remember the Lord their God who had rescued them from the hand of all their enemies on every side; |
| 8:35 |
and they did not showexhibit kindnessloyalty to the familyhouse of Jerubba′alJerubbaal that is Gideon in return for all the good that he had done to Israel |
| 9:1 |
Now Abim′elechAbimelech the son of Jerubba′alJerubbaal went to Shechem to his mothers kinsmenkinsfolk and said to them and to the whole clan of his mothers family |
| 9:2 |
Say in the earshearing of all the citizenslords of Shechem Which is better for you that all seventy of the sons of Jerubba′alJerubbaal rule over you or that one rule over you Remember also that I am your bone and your flesh |
| 9:3 |
AndSo his mothers kinsmenkinsfolk spoke all these words on his behalf in the earshearing of all the menlords of Shechem; and their hearts inclined to follow Abim′elechAbimelech for they said He is our brother |
| 9:4 |
AndThey they gave him seventy pieces of silver out of the housetemple of Ba′alBaal be′rithberith with which Abim′elechAbimelech hired worthless and reckless fellows who followed him |
| 9:5 |
AndHe he went to his fathers house at Ophrah and slewkilled his brothers the sons of Jerubba′alJerubbaal seventy men uponon one stone; but Jotham the youngest son of Jerubba′alJerubbaal wassurvived left for he hid himself |
| 9:6 |
AndThen all the citizenslords of Shechem came together and all Beth millo came together and they went and made Abim′elechAbimelech king by the oak of the pillar at Shechem |
| 9:7 |
When it was told to Jotham he went and stood on the top of Mount Ger′izimGerizim and cried aloud and said to them Listen to me you menlords of Shechem so that God may listen to you |
| 9:8 |
The trees once went forthout to anoint a king over them;themselves andSo they said to the olive tree Reign over us |
| 9:9 |
ButThe the olive tree saidanswered to them Shall I leavestop producing my fatnessrich oil by which gods and menmortals are honored and go to sway over the trees |
| 9:10 |
AndThen the trees said to the fig tree ComeYou youcome and reign over us |
| 9:11 |
But the fig tree saidanswered to them Shall I leavestop producing my sweetness and my gooddelicious fruit and go to sway over the trees |
| 9:12 |
AndThen the trees said to the vine ComeYou youcome and reign over us |
| 9:13 |
But the vine said to them Shall I leavestop producing my wine whichthat cheers gods and menmortals and go to sway over the trees |
| 9:14 |
ThenSo all the trees said to the bramble ComeYou youcome and reign over us |
| 9:16 |
Now therefore if you acted in good faith and honor when you made Abim′elechAbimelech king and if you have dealt well with Jerubba′alJerubbaal and his house and have done to him as his deedsactions deserved— |
| 9:17 |
for my father fought for you and risked his life and rescued you from the hand of Mid′ianMidian; |
| 9:18 |
andbut you have risen up against my fathers house this day and have slainkilled his sons seventy men on one stone and have made Abim′elechAbimelech the son of his maidservantslave woman king over the citizenslords of Shechem because he is your kinsman— |
| 9:19 |
if I say you then have acted in good faith and honor with Jerubba′alJerubbaal and with his house this day then rejoice in Abim′elechAbimelech and let him also rejoice in you; |
| 9:20 |
but if not let fire come out from Abim′elechAbimelech and devour the citizenslords of Shechem and Beth millo; and let fire come out from the citizenslords of Shechem and from Beth millo and devour Abim′elechAbimelech |
| 9:21 |
AndThen Jotham ran away and fled andgoing went to Beer andwhere dwelthe thereremained for fear of Abim′elech his brother Abimelech |
| 9:22 |
Abim′elechAbimelech ruled over Israel three years |
| 9:23 |
AndBut God sent an evil spirit between Abim′elechAbimelech and the menlords of Shechem; and the menlords of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abim′elech;Abimelech |
| 9:24 |
This happened so that the violence done to the seventy sons of Jerubba′alJerubbaal might comebe avenged and their blood be laid uponon Abim′elech their brother Abimelech who slewkilled them and uponon the menlords of Shechem who strengthened his hands to slaykill his brothers |
| 9:25 |
AndSo theout men of Shechemhostility putto menhim inthe ambushlords againstof himShechem set ambushes on the mountain tops andThey they robbed all who passed by them along that way; and it was toldreported Abim′elechto Abimelech |
| 9:26 |
AndWhen Ga′alGaal the son of Ebed moved into Shechem with his kinsmen;kinsfolk and the menlords of Shechem put confidence in him |
| 9:27 |
AndThey they went out into the field and gathered the grapes from their vineyards and trod them and heldcelebrated festivalThen andthey went into the housetemple of their god and ate and drank and reviledridiculed Abim′elechAbimelech |
| 9:28 |
AndGaal Ga′al the son of Ebed said Who is Abim′elechAbimelech and who are we of Shechem that we should serve him Did not the son of Jerubba′alJerubbaal and Zebul his officer serve the men of Hamor the father of Shechem Why then should we serve him |
| 9:29 |
WouldIf thatonly this people were under my handcommand thenThen I would remove Abim′elechAbimelech; I would say to Abim′elechhim Increase your army and come out |
| 9:30 |
When Zebul the ruler of the city heard the words of Ga′alGaal the son of Ebed his anger was kindled |
| 9:31 |
AndHe he sent messengers to Abim′elechAbimelech at Aru′mahArumah saying BeholdLook Ga′alGaal the son of Ebed and his kinsmenkinsfolk have come to Shechem and they are stirring up the city against you |
| 9:32 |
Now therefore go by night you and the mentroops that are with you and lie in wait in the fields |
| 9:33 |
Then early in the morning as soon as the sun isrises get up rise early and rush uponon the city; and when he and the mentroops that are with him come out against you you may dodeal towith them as occasionbest offersyou can |
| 9:34 |
AndSo Abim′elechAbimelech and all the mentroops that were with him rosegot up by night and laidlay in wait against Shechem in four companies |
| 9:35 |
AndWhen Ga′alGaal the son of Ebed went out and stood in the entrance of the gate of the city; andAbimelech Abim′elech and the mentroops that were with him rose from the ambush |
| 9:36 |
And when Ga′alGaal saw thethem men he said to Zebul Look menpeople are coming down from the mountain tops And Zebul said to him YouThe seeshadows theon shadow of the mountains aslook iflike theypeople wereto menyou |
| 9:37 |
Ga′alGaal spoke again and said Look menpeople are coming down from theTabbur centererez of the land and one company is coming from the direction of theElon Divinersmeonenim Oak |
| 9:38 |
Then Zebul said to him Where is your mouthboast now you who said Who is Abim′elechAbimelech that we should serve him Are not these the mentroops whom you despisedmade light of Go out now and fight with them |
| 9:39 |
AndSo Ga′alGaal went out at the head of the menlords of Shechem and fought with Abim′elechAbimelech |
| 9:40 |
AndAbimelech Abim′elech chased him and he fled before him; andMany many fell wounded up to the entrance of the gate |
| 9:41 |
AndSo Abim′elechAbimelech dweltresided at Aru′mahArumah; and Zebul drove out Ga′alGaal and his kinsmenkinsfolk so that they could not live on at Shechem |
| 9:42 |
On the following day the menpeople went out into the fields AndWhen Abim′elechAbimelech was told |
| 9:43 |
Hehe took his mentroops and divided them into three companies and laidlay in wait in the fields; andWhen he looked and saw the menpeople coming out of the city and he rose against them and slewkilled them |
| 9:44 |
Abim′elechAbimelech and the company that was with him rushed forward and stood at the entrance of the gate of the city while the two companies rushed uponon all who were in the fields and slewkilled them |
| 9:45 |
AndAbimelech Abim′elech fought against the city all that day; he took the city and killed the people that were in it; and he razed the city and sowed it with salt |
| 9:46 |
When all the peoplelords of the Tower of Shechem heard of it they entered the stronghold of the housetemple of El be′rithberith |
| 9:47 |
Abim′elechAbimelech was told that all the peoplelords of the Tower of Shechem were gathered together |
| 9:48 |
AndSo Abim′elechAbimelech went up to Mount Zalmon he and all the mentroops that were with him; andAbimelech Abim′elech took an axeax in his hand and cut down a bundle of brushwood and took it up and laid it on his shoulder AndThen he said to the mentroops that were with him What you have seen me do makedo hastequickly to do as I have done |
| 9:49 |
So every one of the peopletroops cut down hisa bundle and following Abim′elechAbimelech put it against the stronghold and they set the stronghold on fire over them so that all the people of the Tower of Shechem also died about a thousand men and women |
| 9:50 |
Then Abim′elechAbimelech went to Thebez and encamped against Thebez and took it |
| 9:51 |
But there was a strong tower within the city and all the peoplemen and women and all the lords of the city fled to it all the men and women and shut themselves in; and they went to the roof of the tower |
| 9:52 |
AndAbimelech Abim′elech came to the tower and fought against it and drewcame near to the doorentrance of the tower to burn it with fire |
| 9:53 |
AndBut a certain woman threw an upper millstone uponon Abim′elechsAbimelechs head and crushed his skull |
| 9:54 |
ThenImmediately he called hastily to the young man who carried his armor bearer and said to him Draw your sword and kill me lestso menpeople will not say ofabout me A woman killed him AndSo histhe young man thrust him through and he died |
| 9:55 |
AndWhen when the menIsraelites of Israel saw that Abim′elechAbimelech was dead they departedall everywent man to his home |
| 9:56 |
Thus God requitedrepaid Abimelech for the crime of Abim′elech which he committed against his father in killing his seventy brothers; |
| 9:57 |
and God also made all the wickedness of the menpeople of Shechem fall back uponon their heads and uponon them came the curse of Jotham the son of Jerubba′alJerubbaal |
| 10:1 |
After Abim′elechAbimelech there arose to deliver Israel Tola the son of Pu′ahPuah son of Dodo a man of Is′sachar;Issachar andwho he lived at Shamir in the hill country of E′phraimEphraim rose to deliver Israel |
| 10:2 |
AndHe he judged Israel twenty three years Then he died and was buried at Shamir |
| 10:3 |
After him arosecame Ja′irJair the Gileadite who judged Israel twenty two years |
| 10:4 |
AndHe he had thirty sons who rode on thirty assesdonkeys; and they had thirty citiestowns called Hav′voth ja′ir to this day which are in the land of Gilead and are called Havvoth jair to this day |
| 10:5 |
AndJair Ja′ir died and was buried in Kamon |
| 10:6 |
AndThe theIsraelites people of Israel again did what was evil in the sight of the Lord andworshiping served the Ba′alsBaals and the Ash′tarothAstartes the gods of SyriaAram the gods of Sidon the gods of Moab the gods of the Ammonites and the gods of the Philistines; andThus they forsookabandoned the Lord and did not serveworship him |
| 10:7 |
AndSo the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel and he sold them into the hand of the Philistines and into the hand of the Ammonites |
| 10:8 |
and they crushed and oppressed the childrenIsraelites of Israel that year For eighteen years they oppressed all the peopleIsraelites of Israel that were beyond the Jordan in the land of the Amorites which is in Gilead |
| 10:9 |
AndThe the Ammonites also crossed the Jordan to fight also against Judah and against Benjamin and against the house of E′phraimEphraim; so that Israel was sorelygreatly distressed |
| 10:10 |
AndSo the peopleIsraelites of Israel cried to the Lord saying We have sinned against theeyou because we have forsakenabandoned our God and have servedworshiped the Ba′alsBaals |
| 10:11 |
And the Lord said to the peopleIsraelites of Israel Did I not deliver you from the Egyptians and from the Amorites from the Ammonites and from the Philistines |
| 10:12 |
The Sido′niansSidonians also and the Amal′ekitesAmalekites and the Ma′onitesMaonites oppressed you; and you cried to me and I delivered you out of their hand |
| 10:13 |
Yet you have forsakenabandoned me and servedworshiped other gods; therefore I will deliver you no more |
| 10:15 |
And the peopleIsraelites of Israel said to the Lord We have sinned; do to us whatever seems good to theeyou; onlybut deliver us we pray thee this day |
| 10:16 |
So they put away the foreign gods from among them and servedworshiped the Lord; and he becamecould indignantno overlonger thebear miseryto ofsee Israel suffer |
| 10:17 |
Then the Ammonites were called to arms and they encamped in Gilead; and the peopleIsraelites of Israel came together and they encamped at Mizpah |
| 10:18 |
AndThe thecommanders peopleof the leaderspeople of Gilead said to one to another Who is the man that will begin tothe fight against the Ammonites He shall be head over all the inhabitants of Gilead |
| 11:1 |
Now Jephthah the Gileadite wasthe ason mightyof warriora butprostitute he was thea sonmighty ofwarrior a harlot Gilead was the father of Jephthah |
| 11:2 |
And Gileads wife also bore him sons; and when his wifes sons grew up they thrustdrove Jephthah outaway andsaying said to him You shall not inherit anything in our fathers house; for you are the son of another woman |
| 11:3 |
Then Jephthah fled from his brothers and dweltlived in the land of Tob; andOutlaws worthless fellows collected roundaround Jephthah and went raiding with him |
| 11:5 |
And when the Ammonites made war against Israel the elders of Gilead went to bring Jephthah from the land of Tob; |
| 11:6 |
andThey they said to Jephthah Come and be our leadercommander so that we may fight with the Ammonites |
| 11:7 |
But Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead DidAre you not hatethe very ones who rejected me and drivedrove me out of my fathers house WhySo havewhy do you come to me now when you are in trouble |
| 11:8 |
AndThe the elders of Gilead said to Jephthah ThatNevertheless is why we have now turned back to you nowso that you may go with us and fight with the Ammonites and bebecome our head over us over all the inhabitants of Gilead |
| 11:11 |
So Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead and the people made him head and leadercommander over them; and Jephthah spoke all his words before the Lord at Mizpah |
| 11:12 |
Then Jephthah sent messengers to the king of the Ammonites and said What haveis there between you againstand me that you have come to me to fight against my land |
| 11:13 |
AndThe the king of the Ammonites answered the messengers of Jephthah Because Israel on coming from Egypt took away my land from the Arnon to the Jabbok and to the Jordan; now therefore restore it peaceably |
| 11:14 |
AndOnce again Jephthah sent messengers again to the king of the Ammonites |
| 11:15 |
and said to him: Thus says Jephthah: Israel did not take away the land of Moab or the land of the Ammonites |
| 11:17 |
Israel then sent messengers to the king of Edom saying Let us pass we pray through your land; but the king of Edom would not listen AndThey theyalso sent also to the king of Moab but he would not consent So Israel remained at Kadesh |
| 11:18 |
Then they journeyed through the wilderness and went around the land of Edom and the land of Moab and arrived on the east side of the land of Moab and camped on the other side of the Arnon; butThey they did not enter the territory of Moab for the Arnon was the boundary of Moab |
| 11:19 |
Israel then sent messengers to King Sihon king of the Amorites king of Heshbon; and Israel said to him Let us pass we pray through your land to our country |
| 11:21 |
AndThen the Lord the God of Israel gave Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel and they defeated them; so Israel tookoccupied possession of all the land of the Amorites who inhabited that country |
| 11:22 |
AndThey theyoccupied took possession of all the territory of the Amorites from the Arnon to the Jabbok and from the wilderness to the Jordan |
| 11:23 |
So thennow the Lord the God of Israel dispossessedhas conquered the Amorites fromfor beforethe benefit of his people Israel; andDo are you intend to take possessiontheir ofplace them |
| 11:24 |
WillShould you not possess what Chemosh your god Chemosh gives you to possess And allshould we not be the ones to possess everything that the Lord our God has dispossessedconquered beforefor usour webenefit will possess |
| 11:25 |
Now are you any better than King Balak the son of Zippor king of Moab Did he ever striveenter againstinto conflict with Israel or did he ever go to war with them |
| 11:26 |
While Israel dweltlived in Heshbon and its villages and in Aro′erAroer and its villages and in all the citiestowns that are onalong the banks of the Arnon three hundred years why did you not recover them within that time |
| 11:27 |
It is not I thereforewho have not sinned against you andbut you doare the one who does me wrong by making war on me; Let the Lord thewho Judgeis judge decide thistoday dayfor between the peopleIsraelites ofor Israelfor and the peopleAmmonites of Ammon |
| 11:28 |
But the king of the Ammonites did not heed the message ofthat Jephthah which he sent to him |
| 11:29 |
Then the Spiritspirit of the Lord came upon Jephthah and he passed through Gilead and Manas′sehManasseh andHe passed on to Mizpah of Gilead and from Mizpah of Gilead he passed on to the Ammonites |
| 11:30 |
And Jephthah made a vow to the Lord and said If thouyou wiltwill give the Ammonites into my hand |
| 11:31 |
then whoever comes forthout fromof the doors of my house to meet me when I return victorious from the Ammonites shall be the Lords andto Ibe willoffered offerup himby upme foras a burnt offering |
| 11:33 |
AndHe heinflicted smotea massive defeat on them from Aro′erAroer to the neighborhood of Minnith twenty citiestowns and as far as Abel keramim with a very great slaughter So the Ammonites were subdued before the people of Israel |
| 11:34 |
Then Jephthah came to his home at Mizpah; and beholdthere was his daughter camecoming out to meet him with timbrels and with dances;dancing sheShe was his only child; beside her he had neitherno son noror daughter except her |
| 11:35 |
AndWhen when he saw her he renttore his clothes and said Alas my daughter youYou have brought me very low; and you have become the cause of great trouble to me; forFor I have opened my mouth to the Lord and I cannot take back my vow |
| 11:36 |
AndShe she said to him My father if you have opened your mouth to the Lord do to me according to what has gone forthout fromof your mouth now that the Lord has avengedgiven you onvengeance against your enemies on the Ammonites |
| 11:37 |
And she said to her father Let this thing be done for me;: letGrant me alone two months so that I may go and wander on the mountains and bewail my virginity Imy companions and myI companions |
| 11:38 |
AndGo he said Goand And he sent her away for two months; andSo she departed she and her companions and bewailed her virginity uponon the mountains |
| 11:39 |
AndAt at the end of two months she returned to her father who did with her according to histhe vow which he had made She had never knownslept with a man AndSo itthere becamearose aan Israelite custom inthat Israel |
| 11:40 |
thatfor four days every year the daughters of Israel wentwould yeargo byout year to lament the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days in the year |
| 12:1 |
The men of E′phraimEphraim were called to arms and they crossed to Zaphon and said to Jephthah Why did you cross over to fight against the Ammonites and did not call us to go with you We will burn your house down over you with fire |
| 12:2 |
And Jephthah said to them IMy people and myI peoplewere hadengaged ain greatconflict feud with the Ammonites; andwho oppressed us severely But when I called you you did not deliver me from their hand |
| 12:3 |
AndWhen when I saw that you would not deliver me I took my life in my hand and crossed over against the Ammonites and the Lord gave them into my hand; whyWhy then have you come up to me this day to fight against me |
| 12:4 |
Then Jephthah gathered all the men of Gilead and fought with E′phraimEphraim; and the men of Gilead smotedefeated E′phraimEphraim because they said You are fugitives offrom E′phraimEphraim you Gileadites —in the midstheart of E′phraimEphraim and Manas′sehManasseh |
| 12:5 |
AndThen the Gileadites took the fords of the Jordan against the E′phraimitesEphraimites AndWhenever whenone any of the fugitives of E′phraimEphraim said Let me go over the men of Gilead saidwould say to him Are you an E′phraimiteEphraimite When he said No |
| 12:6 |
they said to him Then say Shibboleth and he said Sibboleth for he could not pronounce it right; thenThen they seized him and slewkilled him at the fords of the Jordan AndForty theretwo thousand of the Ephraimites fell at that time forty two thousand of the E′phraimites |
| 12:7 |

Then Abdon the son of Hillel the Pir′athonitePirathonite died and was buried at Pir′athonPirathon in the land of E′phraimEphraim in the hill country of the Amal′ekitesAmalekites |
| 13:1 |
AndThe theIsraelites people of Israel again did what was evil in the sight of the Lord; and the Lord gave them into the hand of the Philistines for forty years |
| 13:2 |
AndThere there was a certain man of Zorah of the tribe of the Danites whose name was Mano′ah;Manoah andHis his wife was barren andhaving hadborne no children |
| 13:3 |
And the angel of the Lord appeared to the woman and said to her BeholdAlthough you are barren andhaving haveborne no children; but you shall conceive and bear a son |
| 13:4 |
ThereforeNow bewarebe andcareful not to drink no wine or strong drink andor to eat nothinganything unclean |

for lo you shall conceive and bear a son No razor shallis to come uponon his head for the boy shall be a Naziritenazirite to God from birth; andIt is he who shall begin to deliver Israel from the hand of the Philistines |
| 13:6 |
Then the woman came and told her husband A man of God came to me and his countenanceappearance was like thethat countenance of thean angel of God verymost terribleawe inspiring; I did not ask him whencewhere he wascame from and he did not tell me his name; |
| 13:7 |
but he said to me BeholdYou you shall conceive and bear a son; soSo then drink no wine or strong drink and eat nothing unclean for the boy shall be a Naziritenazirite to God from birth to the day of his death |
| 13:8 |
Then Mano′ahManoah entreated the Lord and said O Lord I pray thee let the man of God whom thouyou didstsent send come again to us again and teach us what we are to do withconcerning the boy thatwho will be born |
| 13:9 |
And God listened to theManoah voice of Mano′ah and the angel of God came again to the woman as she sat in the field; but Mano′ah her husband Manoah was not with her |
| 13:10 |
AndSo the woman ran inquickly haste and told her husband BeholdThe the man who came to me the other day has appeared to me |
| 13:11 |
AndManoah Mano′ahgot aroseup and wentfollowed after his wife and came to the man and said to him Are you the man who spoke to this woman And he said I am |
| 13:12 |
AndThen Mano′ahManoah said Now when your words come true what is to be the boys mannerrule of life; and what is he to do |
| 13:13 |
AndThe the angel of the Lord said to Mano′ahManoah OfLet the woman give heed to all that I said to the woman let her beware |
| 13:14 |
She may not eat of anything that comes from the vine neitherShe letis hernot to drink wine or strong drink or eat any unclean thing; allShe is to observe everything that I commanded her let her observe |
| 13:15 |
Mano′ahManoah said to the angel of the Lord PrayAllow let us to detain you and prepare a kid for you |
| 13:16 |
AndThe the angel of the Lord said to Mano′ahManoah If you detain me I will not eat of your food; but if you makewant readyto prepare a burnt offering then offer it to the Lord For Mano′ahManoah did not know that he was the angel of the Lord |
| 13:17 |
AndThen Mano′ahManoah said to the angel of the Lord What is your name so that we may honor you when your words come true we may honor you |
| 13:18 |
AndBut the angel of the Lord said to him Why do you ask my name seeingIt it is too wonderful |
| 13:19 |
So Mano′ahManoah took the kid with the cerealgrain offering and offered it uponon the rock to the Lord to him who works wonders |
| 13:20 |
AndWhen when the flame went up toward heaven from the altar the angel of the Lord ascended in the flame of the altar while Mano′ahManoah and his wife looked on; and they fell on their faces to the ground |
| 13:21 |
The angel of the Lord appeareddid nonot moreappear again to Mano′ahManoah and to his wife Then Mano′ahManoah knewrealized that heit was the angel of the Lord |
| 13:22 |
And Mano′ahManoah said to his wife We shall surely die for we have seen God |
| 13:23 |
But his wife said to him If the Lord had meant to kill us he would not have accepted a burnt offering and a cerealgrain offering at our hands or shown us all these things or now announced to us such things as these |
| 13:24 |
AndThe the woman bore a son and callednamed hishim name Samson; andThe the boy grew and the Lord blessed him |
| 13:25 |
AndThe thespirit Spirit of the Lord began to stir him in Ma′hanehMahaneh dan between Zorah and Esh′ta olEshtaol |
| 14:1 |
Once Samson went down to Timnah and at Timnah he saw onea ofPhilistine thewoman daughters of the Philistines |
| 14:2 |
Then he came up and told his father and mother I saw onea ofPhilistine thewoman daughters of the Philistines at Timnah; now get her for me as my wife |
| 14:3 |
But his father and mother said to him Is there not a woman among the daughters of your kinsmenkin or among all our people that you must go to take a wife from the uncircumcised Philistines But Samson said to his father Get her for me; forbecause she pleases me well |
| 14:4 |
His father and mother did not know that itthis was from the Lord; for he was seeking ana occasionpretext to act against the Philistines At that time the Philistines had dominion over Israel |
| 14:5 |
Then Samson went down with his father and mother to Timnah andWhen he came to the vineyards of Timnah Andsuddenly behold a young lion roared againstat him; |
| 14:6 |
andThe thespirit Spirit of the Lord camerushed mightilyon upon him and he tore the lion asunderapart barehanded as one tearsmight tear apart a kid; and he had nothing in his hand But he did not tell his father or his mother what he had done |
| 14:7 |
Then he went down and talked with the woman; and she pleased Samson well |
| 14:8 |
AndAfter after a while he returned to takemarry her; and he turned aside to see the carcass of the lion and behold there was a swarm of bees in the body of the lion and honey |
| 14:9 |
He scraped it out into his hands and went on eating as he went; andWhen he came to his father and mother andhe gave some to them and they ate it But he did not tell them that he had taken the honey from the carcass of the lion |
| 14:10 |
AndHis his father went down to the woman and Samson made a feast there; foras so the young men usedwere accustomed to do |
| 14:11 |
AndWhen when the people saw him they brought thirty companions to be with him |
| 14:12 |
And Samson said to them Let me now put a riddle to you; ifIf you can tellexplain meit whatto itme is within the seven days of the feast and find it out then I will give you thirty linen garments and thirty festal garments; |
| 14:13 |
butBut if you cannot tellexplain meit whatto itme is then you shall give me thirty linen garments and thirty festal garments AndSo they said to him PutAsk your riddle; thatlet weus may hear it |
| 14:14 |
AndHe he said to them Out of the eater came something to eat Out of the strong came something sweet AndBut for three days they could not inexplain three days tell what the riddle was |
| 14:15 |
On the fourth day they said to Samsons wife EnticeCoax your husband to tellexplain us what the riddle isto lestus or we will burn you and your fathers house with fire Have you invited us here to impoverish us |
| 14:16 |
AndSo Samsons wife wept before him andsaying said You only hate me; you do not really love me; youYou have putasked a riddle toof my countrymenpeople andbut you have not toldexplained me what it isto Andme heHe said to her BeholdLook I have not told my father noror my mother andWhy shallshould I tell you |
| 14:17 |
She wept before him the seven days that their feast lasted; and because she nagged him on the seventh day he told her because she pressed him hard Then she toldexplained the riddle to her countrymenpeople |
| 14:18 |
AndThe the men of the citytown said to him on the seventh day before the sun went down What is sweeter than honey What is stronger than a lion And he said to them If you had not plowed with my heifer you would not have found out my riddle |
| 14:19 |
AndThen the Spiritspirit of the Lord camerushed mightilyon upon him and he went down to Ash′kelonAshkelon andHe killed thirty men of the town and took their spoil and gave the festal garments to those who had toldexplained the riddle In hot anger he went back to his fathers house |
| 15:1 |
After a while at the time of the wheat harvest Samson went to visit his wife withbringing along a kid; andHe he said I willwant to go ininto to my wifewifes inroom the chamber But her father would not allow him to go in |
| 15:2 |
AndHer her father said I reallywas thoughtsure that you utterlyhad hatedrejected her; so I gave her to your companion Is not her younger sister fairerprettier than she PrayWhy not take her instead |
| 15:3 |
And Samson said to them This time when I shalldo bemischief blameless in regard to the Philistines when I dowill thembe mischiefwithout blame |
| 15:4 |
So Samson went and caught three hundred foxes and took some torches; and he turned themthe foxes tail to tail and put a torch between each pair of tails |
| 15:5 |
AndWhen when he had set fire to the torches he let the foxes go into the standing grain of the Philistines and burned up the shocks and the standing grain as well as the vineyards and olive orchardsgroves |
| 15:6 |
Then the Philistines saidasked Who has done this And they said Samson the son in law of the Timnite because he has taken hisSamsons wife and given her to his companion AndSo the Philistines came up and burned her and her father with fire |
| 15:7 |
And Samson said to them If this is what you do I swear I will benot avengedstop uponuntil youI andhave aftertaken thatrevenge Ion willyou quit |
| 15:8 |
AndHe hestruck smote them down hip and thigh with great slaughter; and he went down and stayed in the cleft of the rock of Etam |
| 15:10 |
AndThe the men of Judah said Why have you come up against us They said We have come up to bind Samson to do to him as he did to us |
| 15:11 |
Then three thousand men of Judah went down to the cleft of the rock of Etam and they said to Samson Do you not know that the Philistines are rulers over us What then ishave this that you have done to us AndHe hereplied said to them As they did to me so I have I done to them |
| 15:12 |
AndThey they said to him We have come down to bind you so that we may give you into the hands of the Philistines And Samson saidanswered to them Swear to me that you yourselves will not fallattack upon me yourselves |
| 15:13 |
They said to him No; we will only bind you and give you into their hands; we will not kill you So they bound him with two new ropes and brought him up from the rock |
| 15:14 |
When he came to Lehi the Philistines came shouting to meet him; and the Spiritspirit of the Lord camerushed mightilyon upon him and the ropes whichthat were on his arms became aslike flax that has caught fire and his bonds melted off his hands |
| 15:15 |
AndThen he found a fresh jawbone of ana assdonkey andreached putdown out his hand and seizedtook it and with it he slewkilled a thousand men |
| 15:16 |
And Samson said With the jawbone of ana assdonkey heaps upon heaps with the jawbone of ana assdonkey I have I slain a thousand men |
| 15:17 |
When he had finished speaking he threw away the jawbone out of his hand; and that place was called Ra′mathRamath le′hilehi |
| 15:18 |
AndBy then he was very thirsty and he called on the Lord andsaying saidYou Thouhave hast granted this great deliverancevictory by the hand of thyyour servant; andAm shall I now to die of thirst and fall into the hands of the uncircumcised |
| 15:19 |
AndSo God split open the hollow place that is at Lehi and therewater came water from it; andWhen when he drank his spirit returned and he revived Therefore the name of it was callednamed En hakkor′e;hakkore itwhich is at Lehi to this day |
| 16:1 |
Once Samson went to Gaza andwhere there he saw a harlotprostitute and he went in to her |
| 16:2 |
The Gazites were told Samson has come here andSo they surroundedcircled thearound place and lay in wait for him all night at the city gate of the city They kept quiet all night sayingthinking Let us wait tilluntil the light of the morning; then we will kill him |
| 16:3 |
But Samson lay tillonly until midnight andThen at midnight he aroserose andup took hold of the doors of the city gate of the city and the two posts and pulled them up bar and all and put them on his shoulders and carried them to the top of the hill that is beforein front of Hebron |
| 16:4 |
After this he lovedfell in love with a woman in the valley of Sorek whose name was Deli′lahDelilah |
| 16:5 |
AndThe the lords of the Philistines came to her and said to her EnticeCoax him and seefind whereinout what makes his great strength liesso great and byhow what means we may overpower him so that we may bind him in order to subdue him; and we will each give you eleven hundred pieces of silver |
| 16:6 |
AndSo Deli′lahDelilah said to Samson Please tell me whereinwhat makes your great strength liesso great and how you mightcould be bound so that one could subdue you |
| 16:7 |
And Samson said to her If they bind me with seven fresh bowstrings whichthat haveare not been dried out then I shall become weak and be like anyanyone otherelse man |
| 16:8 |
Then the lords of the Philistines brought her seven fresh bowstrings whichthat had not been dried out and she bound him with them |
| 16:9 |
NowWhile shemen hadwere men lying in wait in an inner chamber And she said to him The Philistines are upon you Samson But he snapped the bowstrings as a stringstrand of towfiber snaps when it touches the fire So the secret of his strength was not known |
| 16:10 |
AndThen Deli′lahDelilah said to Samson BeholdYou you have mocked me and told me lies; please tell me how you mightcould be bound |
| 16:11 |
AndHe he said to her If they bind me with new ropes that have not been used then I shall become weak and be like anyanyone otherelse man |
| 16:12 |
So Deli′lahDelilah took new ropes and bound him with them and said to him The Philistines are upon you Samson AndThe the men lying in wait were in an inner chamber But he snapped the ropes off his arms like a thread |
| 16:13 |
AndThen Deli′lahDelilah said to Samson Until now you have mocked me and told me lies; tell me how you mightcould be bound AndHe he said to her If you weave the seven locks of my head with the web and make it tight with the pin then I shall become weak and be like anyanyone otherelse man |
| 16:14 |
So while he slept Deli′lahDelilah took the seven locks of his head and wove them into the web Andand she made them tight with the pin andThen she said to him The Philistines are upon you Samson But he awoke from his sleep and pulled away the pin the loom and the web |
| 16:15 |
AndThen she said to him How can you say I love you when your heart is not with me You have mocked me these three times now and you have not told me whereinwhat makes your great strength liesso great |
| 16:16 |
AndFinally whenafter she pressedhad nagged him hard with her words day after day and urgedpestered him hishe soul was vexedtired to death |
| 16:17 |
AndSo he told her all his mindwhole secret and said to her A razor has never come upon my head; for I have been a Naziritenazirite to God from my mothers womb If Imy behead were shaved then my strength willwould leave me; and I shallwould become weak and be like anyanyone other manelse |
| 16:18 |
When Deli′lahDelilah sawrealized that he had told her all his mindwhole secret she sent and called the lords of the Philistines saying ComeThis uptime thiscome onceup for he has told mehis allwhole hissecret mindto me Then the lords of the Philistines came up to her and brought the money in their hands |
| 16:19 |
She madelet him sleepfall uponasleep on her kneeslap; and she called a man and had him shave off the seven locks of his head ThenHe she began to tormentweaken him and his strength left him |
| 16:20 |
AndThen she said The Philistines are upon you Samson AndWhen he awoke from his sleep andhe saidthought I will go out as at other times and shake myself free AndBut he did not know that the Lord had left him |
| 16:21 |
AndSo the Philistines seized him and gouged out his eyes andThey brought him down to Gaza and bound him with bronze fettersshackles; and he ground at the mill in the prison |
| 16:23 |
Now the lords of the Philistines gathered to offer a great sacrifice to Dagon their god Dagon and to rejoice; for they said Our god has given Samson our enemy into our hand |
| 16:24 |
AndWhen when the people saw him they praised their god; for they said Our god has given our enemy into our hand the ravager of our country who has slainkilled many of us |
| 16:25 |
And when their hearts were merry they said Call Samson thatand helet mayhim makeentertain sport for us So they called Samson out of the prison and he madeperformed sportfor before them They made him stand between the pillars; |
| 16:26 |
and Samson said to the ladattendant who held him by the hand Let me feel the pillars on which the house rests so that I may lean against them |
| 16:27 |
Now the house was full of men and women; all the lords of the Philistines were there and on the roof there were about three thousand men and women who looked on while Samson made sportperformed |
| 16:28 |
Then Samson called to the Lord and said O Lord God remember me I pray thee and strengthen me I pray thee only this once O God so that with this one act of revenge I may bepay avengedback upon the Philistines for one of my two eyes |
| 16:29 |
And Samson grasped the two middle pillars uponon which the house rested and he leaned his weight uponagainst them his right hand on the one and his left hand on the other |
| 16:30 |
AndThen Samson said Let me die with the Philistines ThenHe hestrained bowed with all his might; and the house fell uponon the lords and upon all the people thatwho were in it So thethose dead whom he slewkilled at his death were more than those whom he had slainkilled during his life |
| 16:31 |
Then his brothers and all his family came down and took him and brought him up and buried him between Zorah and Esh′taEshtaol ol in the tomb of Mano′ah his father Manoah He had judged Israel twenty years |
| 17:1 |

| 18:6 |
AndThe the priest saidreplied to them Go in peace The journeymission onyou whichare youon go is under the eye of the Lord |
| 18:7 |

| 18:8 |
AndWhen when they came to their brethrenkinsfolk at Zorah and Esh′taEshtaol olthey their brethren said to them What do you report |

| 18:13 |
AndFrom there they passed on from there to the hill country of E′phraimEphraim and came to the house of Micah |

Then the five men who had gone to spy out the countryland ofthat La′ishis Laish said to their brethrencomrades Do you know that in these housesbuildings there are an ephod teraphim aand gravenan imageidol andof acast moltenmetal image Now therefore consider what you will do |
| 18:15 |
AndSo they turned asidein thitherthat direction and came to the house of the young Levite at the home of Micah and askedgreeted him of his welfare |
| 18:16 |
NowWhile the six hundred men of the Danites armed with their weapons of war stood by the entrance of the gate; |
| 18:17 |
and the five men who had gone to spy out the land wentproceeded upto andenter entered and tooktake the gravenidol imageof thecast ephodmetal the teraphimephod and the moltenteraphim imageThe whilepriest thewas prieststanding stood by the entrance of the gate with the six hundred men armed with weapons of war |
| 18:18 |
AndWhen whenthe thesemen went into Micahs house and took the gravenidol imageof thecast ephodmetal the teraphimephod and the moltenteraphim image the priest said to them What are you doing |
| 18:19 |
AndThey they said to him Keep quiet putPut your hand uponover your mouth and come with us and be to us a father and a priest Is it better for you to be priest to the house of one manperson or to be priest to a tribe and familyclan in Israel |
| 18:20 |
AndThen the priestspriest heartaccepted wasthe glad;offer heHe took the ephod and the teraphim and the gravenidol image and went inalong thewith midst of the people |
| 18:21 |
So they turnedresumed andtheir departedjourney putting the little ones and the cattlelivestock and the goods in front of them |
| 18:22 |
When they were asome gooddistance way from the home of Micah the men who were in the houses near Micahs house were called out and they overtook the Danites |
| 18:23 |
AndThey they shouted to the Danites who turned roundaround and said to Micah What ailsis youthe matter that you come with such a company |
| 18:24 |
AndHe hereplied said You take my gods whichthat I made and the priest and go away and what have I left How then docan you ask me What ailsis youthe matter |
| 18:25 |
And the Danites said to him DoYou had better not let your voice be heard among us lestor angryelse hot tempered fellows fallwill uponattack you and you will lose your life withand the lives of your household |
| 18:26 |
Then the Danites went their way; andWhen when Micah saw that they were too strong for him he turned and went back to his home |
| 18:27 |
AndThe takingDanites having taken what Micah had made and the priest who belonged to him the Danites came to La′ishLaish to a people quiet and unsuspecting andput smote them withto the edge of the sword and burned down the city with fire |
| 18:28 |
AndThere there was no deliverer because it was far from Sidon and they had no dealings with anyAram one It was in the valley whichthat belongs to Beth rehob AndThey they rebuilt the city and dweltlived in it |
| 18:29 |
AndThey they named the city Dan after thetheir nameancestor of Dan their ancestor who was born to Israel; but the name of the city was La′ishformerly atLaish the first |
| 18:30 |
AndThen the Danites set up the gravenidol image for themselves; and Jonathan the son of Gershom son of Moses and his sons were priests to the tribe of the Danites until the daytime of the captivityland ofwent theinto landcaptivity |
| 18:31 |
So they setmaintained upas their own Micahs gravenidol imagethat which he had made as long as the house of God was at Shiloh |
| 19:1 |
In those days when there was no king in Israel a certain Levite wasresiding sojourning in the remote parts of the hill country of E′phraimEphraim who took to himself a concubine from Bethlehem in Judah |
| 19:2 |
AndBut his concubine became angry with him and she went away from him to her fathers house at Bethlehem in Judah and was there some four months |

| 19:7 |
AndWhen when the man rosegot up to go his father in law urgedkept urging him tilluntil he lodgedspent the night there again |
| 19:8 |
AndOn on the fifth day he arosegot up early in the morning to departleave; and the girls father said StrengthenFortify youryourself heartSo andthey tarrylingered until the day declinesdeclined Soand theythe atetwo both of them ate and drank |
| 19:9 |
AndWhen when the man andwith his concubine and his servant rosegot up to departleave his father in law the girls father said to him BeholdLook now the day has wanedworn towardon until it is almost evening; praySpend tarrythe all night BeholdSee the day drawshas drawn to itsa close; lodgeSpend the night here and letenjoy youryourself heartTomorrow beyou merry;can andget tomorrowup you shall arise early in the morning for your journey and go home |
| 19:10 |
But the man would not spend the night; he rosegot up and departed and arrived opposite Jebus that is Jerusalem He had with him a couple of saddled assesdonkeys and his concubine was with him |
| 19:11 |
When they were near Jebus the day was far spent and the servant said to his master Come now let us turn aside to this city of the Jeb′usitesJebusites and spend the night in it |
| 19:12 |
AndBut his master said to him We will not turn aside into thea city of foreigners who do not belong to the people of Israel; but we will passcontinue on to Gib′eGibeah ah |
| 19:13 |
AndThen he said to his servant Come and let us drawtry near to reach one of these places and spend the night at Gib′eGibeah ah or at Ramah |
| 19:14 |
So they passed on and went their way; and the sun went down on them near Gib′eGibeah ah which belongs to Benjamin |
| 19:15 |
andThey they turned aside there to go in and spend the night at Gib′eGibeah ahHe And he went in and sat down in the open square of the city; forbut no manone took them intoin his house to spend the night |
| 19:16 |
AndThen beholdat evening there was an old man was coming from his work in the field atThe evening; the man was from the hill country of E′phraimEphraim and he was sojourningresiding in Gib′eGibeah ah;The thepeople men of the place were Benjaminites |
| 19:17 |
AndWhen hethe liftedold upman hislooked eyesup and saw the wayfarer in the open square of the city; andhe the old man said Where are you going and whencewhere do you come from |
| 19:18 |
AndHe heanswered said to him We are passing from Bethlehem in Judah to the remote parts of the hill country of E′phraimEphraim from which I come I went to Bethlehem in Judah; and I am going to my home; andNobody nobodyhas takesoffered meto intotake hisme housein |
| 19:19 |
We your servants have straw and provenderfodder for our assesdonkeys with bread and wine for me and yourthe maidservantwoman and the young man along with yourus servants; We thereneed isnothing nomore lack of anything |
| 19:20 |
AndThe the old man said Peace be to you; I will care for all your wants; only do not spend the night in the square |
| 19:21 |
So he brought him into his house and gavefed the asses provenderdonkeys; and they washed their feet and ate and drank |
| 19:22 |
AsWhile they were makingenjoying theirthemselves hearts merry behold the men of the city basea fellowsperverse besetlot surrounded the house roundand aboutstarted beatingpounding on the door; andThey they said to the old man the master of the house Bring out the man who came into your house so that we may knowhave intercourse with him |
| 19:23 |
And the man the master of the house went out to them and said to them No my brethrenbrothers do not act so wickedly; seeingSince that this man hasis come into my houseguest do not do this vile thing |
| 19:24 |
BeholdHere here are my virgin daughter and his concubine; let me bring them out now Ravish them and do withwhatever themyou whatwant seems good to youthem; but against this man do not do sosuch a vile a thing |
| 19:25 |
But the men would not listen to him So the man seized his concubine and put her out to them; andThey theywantonly knewraped her and abused her all through the night until the morning And as the dawn began to break they let her go |
| 19:26 |
AndAs as morning appeared the woman came and fell down at the door of the mans house where her master was tilluntil it was light |
| 19:27 |
AndIn the morning her master rosegot up in the morning and when he opened the doors of the house and when he went out to go on his way behold there was his concubine lying at the door of the house with her hands on the threshold |
| 19:28 |
HeGet up he said to her Getwe upare let us be going But there was no answer Then he put her uponon the assdonkey; and the man roseset upout andfor went away to his home |
| 19:29 |
AndWhen when he had entered his house he took a knife and layinggrasping hold of his concubine he dividedcut her into twelve pieces limb by limb into twelve pieces and sent her throughout all the territory of Israel |
| 19:30 |
AndThen allhe whocommanded sawthe itmen saidwhom Suchhe asent thingsaying hasThus nevershall happenedyou orsay beento seenall fromthe Israelites Has such a thing ever happened since the day that the peopleIsraelites of Israel came up outfrom of the land of Egypt until this day; considerConsider it take counsel and speak out |
| 20:1 |
Then all the peopleIsraelites of Israel came out from Dan to Beer sheba including the land of Gilead and the congregation assembled asin one manbody tobefore the Lord at Mizpah |
| 20:2 |
AndThe the chiefs of all the people of all the tribes of Israel presented themselves in the assembly of the people of God four hundred thousand men on foot thatsoldiers drewbearing thearms sword |
| 20:3 |
Now the Benjaminites heard that the people of Israel had gone up to Mizpah And the peopleIsraelites of Israel said Tell us how wasdid this wickednesscriminal broughtact tocome passabout |
| 20:4 |
AndThe the Levite the husband of the woman who was murdered answered and said I came to Gib′eGibeah ah that belongs to Benjamin I and my concubine to spend the night |
| 20:5 |
AndThe thelords men of Gib′eGibeah ah rose up against me and besetsurrounded the house roundat about me by night; theyThey meantintended to kill me and they ravishedraped my concubine anduntil she isdied dead |
| 20:6 |
AndThen I took my concubine and cut her ininto pieces and sent her throughout all the countrywhole extent of theIsraels inheritance of Israelterritory; for they have committed abominationa andvile wantonnessoutrage in Israel |
| 20:7 |
BeholdSo now you peopleIsraelites of Israel all of you give your advice and counsel here |
| 20:8 |
AndAll all the people arosegot up as one man saying We will not any of us go to hisour tenttents andnor nonewill any of us will return to hisour househouses |
| 20:9 |
But now this is what we will do to Gib′e ahGibeah: we will go up against it by lot |
| 20:10 |
andWe we will take ten men of a hundred throughout all the tribes of Israel and a hundred of a thousand and a thousand of ten thousand to bring provisions for the peopletroops thatwho whenare theygoing cometo theyrepay mayGibeah requite Gib′e ah of Benjamin for all the wantondisgrace crimethat which they have committeddone in Israel |
| 20:11 |
So all the men of Israel gathered against the city united as one man |
| 20:12 |
AndThe the tribes of Israel sent men through all the tribe of Benjamin saying What wickednesscrime is this that has takenbeen placecommitted among you |
| 20:13 |
Now thereforethen givehand upover thethose menscoundrels the base fellows in Gib′eGibeah ahso that we may put them to death and putpurge awaythe evil from Israel But the Benjaminites would not listen to the voice of their brethrenkinsfolk the peopleIsraelites of Israel |
| 20:14 |
AndThe the Benjaminites came together out of the citiestowns to Gib′eGibeah ah to go out to battle against the peopleIsraelites of Israel |
| 20:15 |
AndOn that day the Benjaminites mustered out of their cities on that day twenty six thousand armed men thatfrom drewtheir thetowns sword besides the inhabitants of Gib′eGibeah ah who mustered seven hundred picked men |
| 20:16 |
AmongOf all thesethis force there were seven hundred picked men who were left handed; every one could sling a stone at a hair and not miss |
| 20:17 |
And the menIsraelites of Israel apart from Benjamin mustered four hundred thousand armed men that drew sword; all theseof werethem men of warwarriors |
| 20:18 |
The peopleIsraelites ofproceeded Israelto arosego and went up to Bethel andwhere they inquired of God Which of us shall go up first to battle against the Benjaminites And the Lord saidanswered Judah shall go up first |
| 20:19 |
Then the peopleIsraelites ofgot Israelup rose in the morning and encamped against Gib′eGibeah ah |
| 20:20 |
AndThe theIsraelites men of Israel went out to battle against Benjamin; and the menIsraelites of Israel drew up the battle line against them at Gib′eGibeah ah |
| 20:21 |
The Benjaminites came out of Gib′eGibeah ah and felledstruck todown the ground on that day twenty two thousand men of the Israelites |
| 20:22 |
But23 The Israelites went up and wept before the peopleLord until the menevening; and they inquired of Israelthe tookLord courageShall andwe again formeddraw thenear to battle lineagainst inour kinsfolk the sameBenjaminites placeAnd wherethe theyLord hadsaid formedGo itup onagainst thethem first day |
| 20:23 |
And22 theThe peopleIsraelites oftook Israelcourage went up and weptagain beforeformed the Lordbattle untilline thein evening; and they inquired of the Lordsame Shallplace wewhere againthey drawhad nearformed toit battleon against our brethren the Benjaminitesfirst And the Lord said Go up against themday |
| 20:24 |
So the peopleIsraelites ofadvanced Israel came near against the BenjamnitesBenjaminites the second day |
| 20:25 |
And Benjamin wentmoved out against them outfrom ofGibeah Gib′e ah the second day and felledstruck todown the ground eighteen thousand men of the peopleIsraelites all of Israel;them allarmed these were men who drew the sword |
| 20:26 |
Then all the peopleIsraelites of Israel the whole army went upback and came to Bethel and wept; theysitting sat there before the Lord; andthey fasted that day until evening andThen they offered burnt offerings and peacesacrifices offeringsof well being before the Lord |
| 20:27 |
And the peopleIsraelites of Israel inquired of the Lord for the ark of the covenant of God was there in those days |
| 20:28 |
and Phin′ehasPhinehas the son of Elea′zarEleazar son of Aaron ministered before it in those days saying Shall we yet again go out once more to battle against our brethrenkinsfolk the Benjaminites or shall we ceasedesist AndThe the Lord saidanswered Go up; for tomorrow I will give them into your hand |
| 20:29 |
So Israel setstationed men in ambush roundaround aboutGibeah Gib′e ah |
| 20:30 |
AndThen the peopleIsraelites of Israel went up against the Benjaminites on the third day and set themselves in array against Gib′eGibeah ah as atbefore other times |
| 20:31 |
AndWhen the Benjaminites went out against the peoplearmy andthey were drawn away from the city; andAs asbefore at other times they began to smiteinflict andcasualties killon some of the peopletroops inalong the highwaysmain roads one of which goes up to Bethel and the other to Gib′eGibeah ahas andwell as in the open country killing about thirty men of Israel |
| 20:32 |
AndThe the Benjaminites saidthought They are being routed before us as atpreviously the first But the menIsraelites of Israel said Let us fleeretreat and draw them away from the city totoward the highwaysroads |
| 20:33 |
AndThe allmain thebody men of Israelthe roseIsraelites updrew outback ofits theirbattle placeline andto setBaal themselvestamar inwhile arraythose atIsraelites Ba′al ta′mar; and the men of Israel who were in ambush rushed out of their place west of Geba |
| 20:34 |
AndThere there came against Gib′eGibeah ah ten thousand picked men out of all Israel and the battle was hard;fierce butBut the Benjaminites did not knowrealize that disaster was close upon them |
| 20:35 |
AndThe the Lord defeated Benjamin before Israel; and the menIsraelites of Israel destroyed twenty five thousand one hundred men of Benjamin that day; all theseof werethem men who drew the sword armed |
| 20:36 |
SoThen the Benjaminites saw that they were defeated The menIsraelites of Israel gave ground to Benjamin because they trusted to the mentroops in ambush whomthat they had setstationed against Gib′eGibeah ah |
| 20:37 |
AndThe thetroops men in ambush maderushed hastequickly andupon rushedGibeah uponThen Gib′ethey ah;put the menwhole in ambush moved out and smote all the city withto the edge of the sword |
| 20:38 |
Now the appointedagreement signal between the menmain body of Israel and the men in ambush was that when they madesent up a great cloud of smoke rise up out of the city |
| 20:39 |
the menmain body of Israel should turn in battle NowBut Benjamin had begun to smiteinflict andcasualties killon the Israelites killing about thirty men of Israelthem; so they saidthought Surely they are smittendefeated down before us as in the first battle |
| 20:40 |
But when the signalcloud a column of smoke began to rise out of the city in a column of smoke the Benjaminites looked behind them; —and beholdthere was the whole of the city wentgoing up in smoke totoward heaventhe sky |
| 20:41 |
Then the menmain body of Israel turned and the menBenjaminites of Benjamin were dismayed for they saw that disaster was close upon them |
| 20:42 |
Therefore they turned theiraway backsfrom before the menIsraelites of Israel in the direction of the wilderness; but the battle overtook them and those who came out of the citiescity destroyedwere slaughtering them in thebetween midst of them |
| 20:43 |
Cutting down the Benjaminites they pursued them from Nohah and trod them down from Nohah as far as oppositea Gib′eplace aheast onof theGibeah east |
| 20:44 |
Eighteen thousand menBenjaminites of Benjamin fell all of them mencourageous offighters valor |
| 20:45 |
AndWhen they turned and fled toward the wilderness to the rock of Rimmon; five thousand men of them were cut down inon the highwaysmain roads and they were pursued hardas tofar as Gidom and two thousand men of them were slain |
| 20:46 |
So all who fell that day of Benjamin were twenty five thousand menarms thatbearing drewmen the sword all of them mencourageous offighters valor |
| 20:47 |
But six hundred men turned and fled toward the wilderness to the rock of Rimmon and aboderemained at the rock of Rimmon for four months |
| 20:48 |
AndMeanwhile the menIsraelites of Israel turned back against the Benjaminites and smoteput them withto the edgesword—the ofcity the swordpeople menthe andanimals beasts and all that theyremained foundAlso Andthe allremaining the towns which they found they set on fire |
| 21:1 |
Now the menIsraelites of Israel had sworn at Mizpah No one of us shall give his daughter in marriage to Benjamin |
| 21:2 |
And the people came to Bethel and sat there tilluntil evening before God and they lifted up their voices and wept bitterly |
| 21:3 |
AndThey they said O Lord the God of Israel why has thisit come to pass inthat Israeltoday that there should be today one tribe lacking in Israel |
| 21:4 |
AndOn on the morrownext day the people rosegot up early and built there an altar there and offered burnt offerings and peacesacrifices offeringsof well being |
| 21:5 |
AndThen the peopleIsraelites of Israel said Which of all the tribes of Israel did not come up in the assembly to the Lord For theya hadsolemn takenoath ahad greatbeen oathtaken concerning himwhoever who did not come up to the Lord to Mizpah saying HeThat one shall be put to death |
| 21:6 |
AndBut the peopleIsraelites of Israel had compassion for Benjamin their brotherkin and said One tribe is cut off from Israel this day |
| 21:7 |
What shall we do for wives for those who are left since we have sworn by the Lord that we will not give them any of our daughters foras wives |
| 21:8 |
AndThen they said WhatIs onethere isanyone therefrom of the tribes of Israel thatwho did not come up to the Lord to Mizpah AndIt beholdturned out that no one from Jabesh gilead had come to the camp from Ja′besh gil′ead to the assembly |
| 21:9 |
For when the peopleroll werewas musteredcalled beholdamong the people not one of the inhabitants of Ja′beshJabesh gil′eadgilead was there |
| 21:10 |
So the congregation sent thither twelve thousand ofsoldiers theirthere bravest men and commanded them Go andput smite the inhabitants of Ja′beshJabesh gil′eadgilead withto the edge of the sword; alsoincluding the women and the little ones |
| 21:11 |
This is what you shall do; every male and every woman that has lain with a male you shall utterlydevote destroyto destruction |
| 21:12 |
And they found among the inhabitants of Ja′beshJabesh gil′eadgilead four hundred young virgins who had notnever knownslept manwith bya lyingman with him; and they brought them to the camp at Shiloh which is in the land of Canaan |
| 21:14 |
And Benjamin returned at that time; and they gave them the women whom they had saved alive of the women of Ja′beshJabesh gil′eadgilead; but they did not suffice for them |
| 21:15 |
AndThe the people had compassion on Benjamin because the Lord had made a breach in the tribes of Israel |
| 21:16 |
ThenSo the elders of the congregation said What shall we do for wives for those who are left since thethere women are destroyedno outwomen ofleft in Benjamin |
| 21:17 |
And they said There must be anheirs inheritance for the survivors of Benjamin in order that a tribe bemay not be blotted out from Israel |
| 21:18 |
Yet we cannot give themany wives of our daughters to them as wives For the peopleIsraelites of Israel had sworn Cursed be heanyone who gives a wife to Benjamin |
| 21:19 |
So they said BeholdLook there is the yearly feastfestival of the Lord is taking place at Shiloh which is north of Bethel on the east of the highway that goes up from Bethel to Shechem and south of Lebo′nahLebonah |
| 21:20 |
And they commandedinstructed the Benjaminites saying Go and lie in wait in the vineyards |
| 21:21 |
and watch; ifwhen the daughtersyoung women of Shiloh come out to dance in the dances then come out of the vineyards and seize each manof hisyou carry off a wife for himself from the daughtersyoung women of Shiloh and go to the land of Benjamin |
| 21:22 |
AndThen whenif their fathers or their brothers come to complain to us we will say to them GrantBe themgenerous graciouslyand allow us to ushave them; because we did not takecapture forin eachbattle mana ofwife themfor hiseach wifeman inBut battle neither did you giveincur themguilt toby themgiving elseyour youdaughters wouldto nowthem be guilty |
| 21:23 |
AndThe the Benjaminites did so; andthey took their wives accordingfor toeach theirof numberthem from the dancers whom they carriedabducted off; Then then they went and returned to their inheritanceterritory and rebuilt the towns and dweltlived in them |
| 21:24 |
AndSo the peopleIsraelites of Israel departed from there at that time everyby mantribes to his tribe and familyfamilies and they went out from there everyto mantheir toown his inheritanceterritories |
| 21:25 |
In those days there was no king in Israel; everyall manthe people did what was right in histheir own eyes |
