1:12 I the PreacherTeacher havewhen been king over Israel in Jerusalem
1:13 And I applied my mind to seek and to search out by wisdom all that is done under heaven; it is an unhappy business that God has given to thehuman sonsbeings of men to be busy with
1:14 I havesaw seenall everythingthe deeds that isare done under the sun; and beholdsee all is vanity and a strivingchasing after wind

1:18 For in much wisdom is much vexation and hethose who increasesincrease knowledge increasesincrease sorrow
2:1 I said to myself Come now I will make a test of pleasure; enjoy yourself But beholdagain this also was vanity

2:7 I bought male and female slaves and had slaves who were born in my house; I also had also great possessions of herds and flocks more than any who had been before me in Jerusalem

2:10 AndWhatever whatever my eyes desired I did not keep from them; I kept my heart from no pleasure for my heart found pleasure in all my toil and this was my reward for all my toil
2:11 Then I considered all that my hands had done and the toil I had spent in doing it and beholdagain all was vanity and a strivingchasing after wind and there was nothing to be gained under the sun
2:12 So I turned to consider wisdom and madness and folly; for what can the manone do who comes after the king Only what he has already been done
2:14 The wise manhave has his eyes in histheir head but thefools foolwalk walks in darkness; andYet yet I perceived that onethe same fate comesbefalls to all of them
2:15 Then I said to myself What befallshappens to the fool will befallhappen to me also; why then have I been so very wise And I said to myself that this also is vanity
2:16 For ofthere theis wiseno manenduring asremembrance of the foolwise thereor isof nofools enduring remembrance seeing that in the days to come all will have been long forgotten How can the wise mandie dies just like thefools fool
2:17 So I hated life because what is done under the sun was grievous to me; for all is vanity and a strivingchasing after wind
2:18 I hated all my toil in which I had toiled under the sun seeing that I must leave it to thethose man who will come after me;
2:19 —and who knows whether hethey will be a wise man or afoolish fool Yet hethey will be master of all for which I toiled and used my wisdom under the sun This also is vanity
2:20 So I turned about and gave my heart up to despair overconcerning all the toil of my labors under the sun
2:21 because sometimes aone man who has toiled with wisdom and knowledge and skill must leave all to be enjoyed by aanother man who did not toil for it This also is vanity and a great evil
2:22 What hasdo amortals manget from all the toil and strain with which hethey toilstoil beneathunder the sun

3:6 a time to seek and a time to lose; a time to keep and a time to castthrow away;
3:7 a time to rendtear and a time to sew; a time to keep silence and a time to speak;
3:9 What gain hashave the workerworkers from histheir toil
3:10 I have seen the business that God has given to theeveryone sons of men to be busy with
3:11 He has made everything beautifulsuitable infor its time; alsomoreover he has put eternitya sense of past and future into manstheir mindminds yet sothey that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end
3:13 alsomoreover that it is Gods gift to man that everyall one should eat and drink and take pleasure in all histheir toil
3:14 I know that whatever God does endures for everforever; nothing can be added to it nor anything taken from it; God has madedone itthis so in order that menall should fearstand in awe before him
3:15 That which is already has been; that which is to be already has beenis; and God seeks out what has beengone driven awayby
3:16 Moreover I saw under the sun that in the place of justice evenwickedness there was wickednessthere and in the place of righteousness evenwickedness was there wasas wickednesswell
3:18 I said in my heart with regard to thehuman sonsbeings of men that God is testing them to show them that they are but beastsanimals
3:19 For the fate of thehumans sons of men and the fate of beastsanimals is the same; as one dies so dies the other They all have the same breath and manhumans hashave no advantage over the beastsanimals; for all is vanity
3:21 Who knows whether the human spirit of man goes upward and the spirit of theanimals beast goes downdownward to the earth

4:3 but better than both is hethe one who has not yet been and has not seen the evil deeds that are done under the sun
4:4 Then I saw that all toil and all skill in work come from aone manspersons envy of hisanother neighbor This also is vanity and a strivingchasing after wind
4:5 TheFools foolfold foldstheir his hands and eatsconsume histheir own flesh
4:6 Better is a handful ofwith quietnessquiet than two handshandfuls fullwith of toil and a strivingchasing after wind
4:8 athe personcase whoof hassolitary noindividuals onewithout eithersons son or brotherbrothers; yet there is no end to all histheir toil and histheir eyes are never satisfied with riches so that he never asks For whom am I toiling they ask and depriving myself of pleasure This also is vanity and an unhappy business

4:14 evenOne thoughcan heindeed hadcome goneout fromof prison to thereign throneeven orthough born poor in histhe own kingdom had been born poor
4:15 I saw all the living who movemoving about under the sun asfollow well as that youth who wasreplaced tothe stand in his placeking;
4:16 there was no end ofto all thethose people; whom he wasled over all of them Yet those who come later will not rejoice in him Surely this also is vanity and a strivingchasing after wind
5:1 Guard your steps when you go to the house of God; to draw near to listen is better than to offer the sacrifice ofoffered by fools; for they do not know thathow theyto arekeep from doing evil
5:2 Be notNever be rash with your mouth nor let your heart be hastyquick to utter a word before God for God is in heaven and you upon earth; therefore let your words be few
5:3 For adreams dreamcome comes with muchmany businesscares and a fools voice with many words
5:4 When you vowmake a vow to God do not delay payingfulfilling it; for he has no pleasure in fools PayFulfill what you vow
5:5 It is better that you should not vow than that you should vow and not payfulfill it
5:6 LetDo not let your mouth lead you into sin and do not say before the messenger that it was a mistake; why should God be angry at your voicewords and destroy the work of your hands
5:7 ForWith whenmany dreams increasecome emptyvanities wordsand growa many:multitude butof dowords; youbut fear God
5:8 If you see in a province the oppression of the poor oppressed and the violation of justice and right violently taken away do not be amazed at the matter; for the high official is watched by a higher and there are yet higher ones over them
5:9 But in all athings kingconsidered this is an advantage tofor a land: witha cultivatedking fieldsfor a plowed field
5:10 HeThe wholover lovesof money will not be satisfied with money; nor hethe wholover lovesof wealth with gain: thisThis also is vanity
5:11 When goods increase theythose increase who eat them increase; and what gain has their owner but to see them with his eyes
5:12 Sweet is the sleep of alaborers laborer whether hethey eatseat little or much; but the surfeit of the rich will not let himthem sleep
5:13 There is a grievous evilill whichthat I have seen under the sun: riches were kept by their ownerowners to histheir hurt
5:14 and those riches were lost in a bad venture; andthough hethey isare fatherparents of achildren sonthey buthave he has nothing in histheir handhands
5:15 As hethey came from histheir mothers womb heso they shall go again naked as hethey came; andthey shall take nothing for histheir toil which hethey may carry away inwith histheir handhands
5:16 This also is a grievous evilill: just as hethey came so shall hethey go; and what gain hasdo hethey thathave hefrom toiledtoiling for the wind
5:17 andBesides spent all histheir days they eat in darkness and grief in much vexation and sickness and resentment
5:18 BeholdThis is what I have seen to be good: andit tois be fitting is to eat and drink and find enjoyment in all the toil with which one toils under the sun the few days of histhe life which God hasgives givenus; him for this is hisour lot
5:19 EveryLikewise manall also to whom God hasgives given wealth and possessions and powerwhom he enables to enjoy them and to accept histheir lot and find enjoyment in histheir toil—this is the gift of God
5:20 For hethey will notscarcely muchbrood rememberover the days of histheir lifelives because God keeps himthem occupied with the joy inof histheir hearthearts
6:1 There is an evil whichthat I have seen under the sun and it lies heavy upon menhumankind:
6:2 athose man to whom God gives wealth possessions and honor so that hethey lackslack nothing of all that hethey desiresdesire yet God does not giveenable himthem power to enjoy themthese things but a stranger enjoys them; thisThis is vanity; it is a soregrievous afflictionill
6:3 IfA a man begetsmay beget a hundred children and liveslive many years; sobut thathowever many are the days of his years areif many but he does not enjoy lifes good things andor also has no burial I say that ana untimelystillborn birthchild is better off than he
6:6 Even though he should live a thousand years twice toldover yet enjoy no good—do not all go to the one place
6:7 All thehuman toil of man is for histhe mouth yet histhe appetite is not satisfied
6:8 For what advantage hashave the wise man over thefools fool And what doesdo the poor man have who knowsknow how to conduct himselfthemselves before the living
6:9 Better is the sight of the eyes than the wandering of desire; this also is vanity and a strivingchasing after wind
6:10 Whatever has come to be has already been named and it is known what manhuman isbeings are and that hethey isare not able to dispute with onethose strongerwho thanare hestronger
6:11 The more words the more vanity andso whathow is manone the better
6:12 For who knows what is good for manmortals while hethey liveslive the few days of histheir vain life which hethey passespass like a shadow For who can tell manthem what will be after himthem under the sun
7:1 A good name is better than precious ointment; and the day of death than the day of birth
7:2 It is better to go to the house of mourning than to go to the house of feasting; for this is the end of alleveryone men and the living will lay it to heart
7:5 It is better for a man to hear the rebuke of the wise than to hear the song of fools
7:6 For aslike the crackling of thorns under a pot so is the laughter of the fools; this also is vanity
7:7 Surely oppression makes the wise man foolish and a bribe corrupts the mindheart
7:8 Better is the end of a thing than its beginning; and the patient in spirit isare better than the proud in spirit
7:9 BeDo not be quick to anger for anger lodges in the bosom of fools
7:10 SayDo not say Why were the former days better than these For it is not from wisdom that you ask this
7:11 Wisdom is as good withas an inheritance an advantage to those who see the sun
7:12 For the protection of wisdom is like the protection of money; and the advantage of knowledge is that wisdom preservesgives the life ofto himthe one who haspossesses it
7:14 In the day of prosperity be joyful and in the day of adversity consider; God has made the one as well as the other so that manmortals may not find out anything that will become after himthem
7:15 In my vain life I have seen everything; there isare a righteous manpeople who perishesperish in histheir righteousness and there isare a wicked manpeople who prolongsprolong histheir life in histheir evilevildoing doing
7:16 BeDo not be too righteous overmuch and do not makeact yourselftoo overwisewise; why should you destroy yourself
7:17 BeDo not be too wicked overmuchand neitherdo not be a fool; why should you die before your time
7:18 It is good that you should take hold of thisthe andone fromwithout thatletting withholdgo notof yourthe handother; for hethe one who fears God shall comesucceed forthwith from them allboth
7:19 Wisdom gives strength to the wise man more than ten rulers that are in a city
7:20 Surely there is notno aone righteous man on earth whoso doesrighteous as to do good andwithout neverever sinssinning
7:21 Do not give heed to alleverything the things that menpeople say lestor you may hear your servant cursing you;
7:23 All this I have tested by wisdom; I said I will be wise; but it was far from me
7:25 I turned my mind to know and to search out and to seek wisdom and the sum of things and to know thethat wickedness ofis folly and thethat foolishness which is madness
7:26 And I found more bitter than death the woman who is a trap whose heart is snares and nets and whose hands are fetters; heone who pleases God escapes her but the sinner is taken by her
7:27 BeholdSee this is what I found says the PreacherTeacher adding one thing to another to find the sum
7:29 BeholdSee this alone I found that God made manhuman uprightbeings straightforward but they have soughtdevised out many devicesschemes
8:1 Who is like the wise man And who knows the interpretation of a thing AWisdom mans wisdom makes hisones face shine and the hardness of hisones countenance is changed
8:2 Keep the kings command and because of your sacred oath be not dismayed;
8:3 Do not be terrified; go from his presence do not delay when the matter is unpleasant for he does whatever he pleases
8:4 For the word of the king is supremepowerful and who maycan say to him What are you doing
8:5 HeWhoever who obeys a command will meet no harm and the mind of a wise manmind will know the time and way
8:6 For every matter has its time and way although mansthe troubletroubles liesof mortals lie heavy upon himthem
8:7 ForIndeed hethey doesdo not know what is to be for who can tell himthem how it will be
8:8 No manone has power over the wind to retainrestrain the spiritwind or authoritypower over the day of death; there is no discharge from warthe battle nor willdoes wickedness deliver those who arepractice given to it
8:9 All this I observed while applying my mind to all that is done under the sun while manone lordsperson itexercises authority over mananother to histhe others hurt
8:11 Because sentence against an evil deed is not executed speedily the human heart of the sons of men is fully set to do evil
8:12 Though asinners sinnerdo does evil a hundred times and prolongsprolong histheir lifelives yet I know that it will be well with those who fear God because they stand in fear before him;
8:13 but it will not be well with the wicked neither will hethey prolong histheir days like a shadow because hethey doesdo not stand in fear before God
8:14 There is a vanity whichthat takes place on earth that there are righteous menpeople towho whomare ittreated happens according to the deedsconduct of the wicked and there are wicked menpeople towho whomare ittreated happens according to the deedsconduct of the righteous I said that this also is vanity
8:15 AndSo I commend enjoyment for manthere hasis nonothing goodbetter thingfor people under the sun butthan to eat and drink and enjoy himselfthemselves for this will go with himthem in histheir toil through the days of life whichthat God gives himthem under the sun
8:16 When I applied my mind to know wisdom and to see the business that is done on earth how ones eyes see sleep neither day nor night ones eyes see sleep;
8:17 then I saw all the work of God that manno cannotone can find out thewhat work that is donehappening under the sun However much manthey may toil in seeking hethey will not find it out; even though athose who are wise manclaim claims to know hethey cannot find it out
9:1 ButAll all this I laid to heart examining it all how the righteous and the wise and their deeds are in the hand of God; whether it is love or hate manone does not know Everything beforethat confronts them is vanity
9:2 is vanity since onethe same fate comes to all to the righteous and the wicked to the good and the evil to the clean and the unclean to himthose who sacrificessacrifice and himthose who doesdo not sacrifice As isare the good man so isare the sinnersinners; andthose he who swearsswear isare aslike hethose who shunsshun an oath
9:3 This is an evil in all that ishappens done under the sun that onethe same fate comes to all;everyone alsoMoreover the hearts of menall are full of evil; and madness is in their hearts while they live and after that they go to the dead
9:4 But hewhoever who is joined with all the living has hope for a living dog is better than a dead lion
9:5 ForThe the living know that they will die but the dead know nothing; and they have no more reward; butand even the memory of them is lost
9:6 Their love and their hate and their envy have already perished; andnever again will they have no more for ever any share in all that ishappens done under the sun
9:7 Go eat your bread with enjoyment and drink your wine with a merry heart; for God has alreadylong ago approved what you do
9:8 Let your garments always be always white; letdo not let oil be lacking on your head
9:9 Enjoy life with the wife whom you love all the days of your vain life whichthat heare has given you under the sun because that is your portion in life and in your toil at which you toil under the sun
9:10 Whatever your hand finds to do do it with your might; for there is no work or thought or knowledge or wisdom in Sheol to which you are going
9:11 Again I saw that under the sun the race is not to the swift nor the battle to the strong nor bread to the wise nor riches to the intelligent nor favor to the men of skillskillful; but time and chance happen to them all
9:12 For manno doesone notcan knowanticipate histhe time of disaster Like fish which are taken in ana evilcruel net and like birds which are caught in a snare so themortals sons of men are snared at ana evil time of calamity when it suddenly falls upon them
9:14 There was a little city with few menpeople in it; andA a great king came against it and besieged it building great siegeworks against it
9:15 ButNow there was found in it a poor wise man and he by his wisdom delivered the city Yet no one remembered that poor man
9:16 ButSo I saysaid thatWisdom wisdom is better than might; thoughyet the poor mans wisdom is despised and his words are not heeded
9:17 The quiet words of the wise heardare inmore quietto arebe betterheeded than the shouting of a ruler among fools
9:18 Wisdom is better than weapons of war but one sinnerbungler destroys much good
10:1 Dead flies make the perfumers ointment give off ana evilfoul odor; so a little folly outweighs wisdom and honor
10:2 AThe wiseheart mansof heartthe wise inclines himto toward the right but the heart of a foolsfool heartto toward the left
10:3 Even when thefools foolwalk walks on the road hethey lackslack sense and heshow says to everyeveryone one that hethey isare a foolfools
10:4 If the anger of the ruler rises against you do not leave your placepost for deferencecalmness will makeundo amends for great offenses
10:5 There is an evil whichthat I have seen under the sun as itgreat were an error proceedingas if it proceeded from the ruler:
10:7 I have seen slaves on horseshorseback and princes walking on foot like slaves
10:8 HeWhoever who digs a pit will fall into it; and whoever breaks through a serpentwall will bitebe himbitten whoby breaks through a wallsnake
10:9 HeWhoever who quarries stones iswill be hurt by them; and hewhoever who splits logs iswill be endangered by them
10:10 If the iron is blunt and one does not whet the edge hethen mustmore putstrength forthmust morebe strengthexerted; but wisdom helps one to succeed
10:11 If the serpentsnake bites before it is charmed there is no advantage in a charmer
10:12 TheWords wordsspoken ofby athe wise mansbring mouththem win him favor but the lips of afools fool consume himthem
10:13 The beginningwords of thetheir wordsmouths ofbegin hisin mouth is foolishness and thetheir endtalk ofends hisin talk is wicked madness;
10:14 Ayet foolfools multipliestalk wordson thoughand noon manNo one knows what is to behappen and who can tell himanyone what willthe befuture after himholds
10:15 The toil of afools foolwears weariesthem himout sofor thatthey hedo does not even know the way to the citytown
10:16 WoeAlas tofor you O land when your king is a childservant and your princes feast in the morning
10:17 Happy are you O land when your king is thea sonnobleman of free men and your princes feast at the proper time— for strength and not for drunkenness
10:19 BreadFeasts isare made for laughter; and wine gladdens life and money answersmeets everythingevery need
10:20 EvenDo in your thought do not curse the king noreven in your bedchamberthoughts or curse the rich even in your bedroom; for a bird of the air willmay carry your voice or some winged creature tell the matter
11:1 CastSend out your bread upon the waters for after many days you will findget it after many daysback
11:2 GiveDivide ayour portionmeans to seven ways or even to eight for you knowdo not know what evildisaster may happen on earth
11:3 IfWhen the clouds are full of rain they empty themselvesrain on the earth; andwhether if a tree falls to the south or to the north in the place where the tree falls there it will lie
11:4 HeWhoever who observes the wind will not sow; and hewhoever who regards the clouds will not reap
11:5 AsJust as you do not know how the spiritbreath comes to the bones in the mothers womb of a woman with child so you do not know the work of God who makes everything
11:6 In the morning sow your seed and at evening withholddo not let your handhands be idle; for you do not know which will prosper this or that or whether both alike will be good
11:7 Light is sweet and it is pleasant for the eyes to beholdsee the sun
11:8 ForEven ifthose awho manlive lives many years letshould him rejoice in them all; butyet let himthem remember that the days of darkness will be many All that comes is vanity
11:9 Rejoice O young man inwhile youryou youthare young and let your heart cheer you in the days of your youth; walkFollow in the waysinclination of your heart and the sightdesire of your eyes Butbut know that for all these things God will bring you into judgment
11:10 RemoveBanish vexationanxiety from your mind and put away pain from your body; for youth and the dawn of life are vanity
12:1 Remember also your Creatorcreator in the days of your youth before the evil days of trouble come and the years draw nighnear when you will say I have no pleasure in them;
12:2 before the sun and the light and the moon and the stars are darkened and the clouds return afterwith the rain;
12:3 in the day when the keepersguards of the house tremble and the strong men are bent and the grinderswomen who grind cease working because they are few and those thatwho look through the windows aresee dimmeddimly;
12:4 andwhen the doors on the street are shut; whenand the sound of the grinding is low and one rises up at the voicesound of a bird and all the daughters of song are brought low;
12:5 theywhen areone is afraid also of whatheights is high and terrors are in the wayroad; the almond tree blossoms the grasshopper drags itself along and desire fails; because manall goesmust go to histheir eternal home and the mourners will go about the streets;
12:6 before the silver cord is snapped orand the golden bowl is broken orand the pitcher is broken at the fountain orand the wheel broken at the cistern
12:7 and the dust returns to the earth as it was and the spiritbreath returns to God who gave it
12:8 Vanity of vanities says the PreacherTeacher; all is vanity
12:9 Besides being wise the PreacherTeacher also taught the people knowledge weighing and studying and arranging many proverbs with great care
12:10 The PreacherTeacher sought to find pleasing words and uprightly he wrote words of truth plainly
12:11 The sayings of the wise are like goads and like nails firmly fixed are the collected sayings whichthat are given by one Shepherdshepherd
12:12 MyOf son beware of anything beyond these my child beware Of making many books there is no end and much study is a weariness of the flesh
12:13 The end of the matter; all has been heard Fear God and keep his commandments; for thisthat is the whole duty of maneveryone
12:14 For God will bring every deed into judgment withincluding every secret thing whether good or evil
