| 1:1 |
In the first book OTheophilus The oph′ilus I havewrote dealtabout with all that Jesus begandid toand dotaught andfrom teachthe beginning |
| 1:2 |
until the day when he was taken up afterto heheaven hadafter givengiving commandmentinstructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen |
| 1:3 |
ToAfter themhis suffering he presented himself alive afterto histhem passion by many convincing proofs appearing to them during forty days and speaking ofabout the kingdom of God |
| 1:4 |
AndWhile while staying with them he chargedordered them not to departleave from Jerusalem but to wait there for the promise of the Father whichThis he said is what you have heard from me; |
| 1:5 |
for John baptized with water but before many days you shallwill be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now |
| 1:6 |
So when they had come together they asked him Lord willis youthis atthe this time when you will restore the kingdom to Israel |
| 1:7 |
He saidreplied to them It is not for you to know the times or seasonsperiods whichthat the Father has fixedset by his own authority |
| 1:8 |
But you shallwill receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shallwill be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samar′iaSamaria and to the endends of the earth |
| 1:9 |
AndWhen when he had said this as they were lookingwatching on he was lifted up and a cloud took him out of their sight |
| 1:10 |
AndWhile whilehe was going and they were gazing intoup toward heaven assuddenly hetwo wentmen beholdin twowhite menrobes stood by them in white robes |
| 1:11 |
andThey said Men of Galilee why do you stand looking intoup toward heaven This Jesus who washas been taken up from you into heaven will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven |
| 1:12 |
Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet which is near Jerusalem a sabbath days journey away; |
| 1:13 |
andWhen when they had entered the city they went up to the upper room upstairs where they were staying Peter and John and James and Andrew Philip and Thomas Bartholomew and Matthew James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot and Judas the son of James |
| 1:14 |
All these withwere oneconstantly accorddevoting devoted themselves to prayer together with thecertain women andincluding Mary the mother of Jesus andas withwell as his brothers |
| 1:15 |
In those days Peter stood up among the brethrenbelievers together the companycrowd ofnumbered persons was in all about aone hundred and twenty persons and said |
| 1:16 |
BrethrenFriends the scripture had to be fulfilled which the Holy Spirit spokethrough beforehandDavid byforetold the mouth of David concerning Judas who wasbecame a guide tofor those who arrested Jesus— |
| 1:17 |
Forfor he was numbered among us and was allotted his share in this ministry |
| 1:18 |
Now this man boughtacquired a field with the reward of his wickedness; and falling headlong he burst open in the middle and all his bowels gushed out |
| 1:19 |
AndThis it became known to all the inhabitantsresidents of Jerusalem so that the field was called in their language Akel′damaHakeldama that is Field of Blood |
| 1:20 |
For it is written in the book of Psalms Let his habitationhomestead become desolate and let there be no one to live in it; and HisLet officeanother lettake anotherhis takeposition of overseer |
| 1:22 |
beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us—one of these men must become a witness with us a witness to his resurrection |
| 1:23 |
AndSo they putproposed forward two Joseph called Barsab′basBarsabbas who was surnamedalso known as Justus and Matthi′asMatthias |
| 1:24 |
AndThen they prayed and said Lord whoyou knowestknow theeveryones heartsheart ofShow allus men show which one of these two thouyou hasthave chosen |
| 1:26 |
And they cast lots for them and the lot fell on Matthi′asMatthias; and he was enrolledadded withto the eleven apostles |
| 2:2 |
And suddenly afrom soundheaven there came froma heavensound like the rush of a mightyviolent wind and it filled all the entire house where they were sitting |
| 2:3 |
AndDivided there appeared to them tongues as of fire distributedappeared among them and restinga tongue rested on each one of them |
| 2:4 |
AndAll theyof them were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongueslanguages as the Spirit gave them utteranceability |
| 2:5 |
Now there were dwellingdevout in Jerusalem Jews devout men from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem |
| 2:6 |
And at this sound the multitudecrowd camegathered together and theywas were bewildered because each one heard them speaking in histhe ownnative language of each |
| 2:7 |
AndAmazed theyand wereastonished amazedthey andasked wondered saying Are not all these who are speaking Galileans |
| 2:8 |
And how is it that we hear each of us in hisour own native language |
| 2:9 |
Par′thiansParthians and Medes andElamites E′lamites and residents of Mesopota′miaMesopotamia Judea and Cappado′ciaCappadocia Pontus and Asia |
| 2:10 |
Phryg′iaPhrygia and Pamphyl′iaPamphylia Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyre′neCyrene and visitors from Rome both Jews and proselytes |
| 2:11 |
Cretans and ArabiansArabs—in our own languages we hear them tellingspeaking inabout ourGods owndeeds tongues the mighty works of Godpower |
| 2:12 |
AndAll all were amazed and perplexed saying to one another What does this mean |
| 2:13 |
But others mockingsneered and said They are filled with new wine |
| 2:14 |
But Peter standing with the eleven liftedraised up his voice and addressed them Men of Judea and all who dwelllive in Jerusalem let this be known to you and givelisten ear to mywhat wordsI say |
| 2:15 |
ForIndeed these men are not drunk as you suppose sincefor it is only thenine thirdoclock hourin of the day;morning |
| 2:16 |
butNo this is what was spoken bythrough the prophet Joel: |
| 2:17 |
AndIn in the last days it shallwill be God declares that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy and your young men shall see visions and your old men shall dream dreams; |
| 2:18 |
yeaEven andupon on my menservantsslaves both men and mywomen maidservants in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy |
| 2:19 |
And I will show wondersportents in the heaven above and signs on the earth beneathbelow blood and fire and vaporsmoky of smoke;mist |
| 2:20 |
theThe sun shall be turned intoto darkness and the moon intoto blood before the daycoming of the LordLords comes the great and manifestglorious day |
| 2:21 |
AndThen iteveryone shallwho be that whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved |
| 2:22 |
MenYou ofthat Israelare hearIsraelites theselisten wordsto what I have to say: Jesus of Nazareth a man attested to you by God with mightydeeds worksof andpower wonders and signs whichthat God did through him inamong youryou midst as you yourselves know— |
| 2:23 |
this Jesusman deliveredhanded upover to you according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God you crucified and killed by the hands of lawlessthose menoutside the law |
| 2:24 |
But God raised him up having loosedfreed thehim pangsfrom of death because it was notimpossible possible for him to be held byin itits power |
| 2:25 |
For David says concerning him I saw the Lord always before me for he is at my right hand so that I maywill not be shaken; |
| 2:26 |
therefore my heart was glad and my tongue rejoiced; moreover my flesh will dwelllive in hope |
| 2:27 |
For thouyou wiltwill not abandon my soul to Hades noror let thyyour Holy One seeexperience corruption |
| 2:28 |
ThouYou hasthave made known to me the ways of life; thouyou wiltwill make me full of gladness with thyyour presence |
| 2:29 |
BrethrenFellow Israelites I may say to you confidently of theour patriarchancestor David that he both died and was buried and his tomb is with us to this day |
| 2:30 |
BeingSince thereforehe was a prophet andhe knowingknew that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would setput one of his descendants uponon his throne |
| 2:31 |
heForeseeing foresawthis andDavid spoke of the resurrection of the ChristMessiah thatsaying heHe was not abandoned to Hades nor did his flesh seeexperience corruption |
| 2:32 |
This Jesus God raised up and of that we all of us are witnesses |
| 2:33 |
Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit he has poured out this whichthat you both see and hear |
| 2:34 |
For David did not ascend into the heavens; but he himself says The Lord said to my Lord Sit at my right hand |
| 2:35 |
tilluntil I make thyyour enemies ayour stoolfootstool for thy feet |
| 2:36 |
LetTherefore alllet the entire house of Israel therefore know assuredlywith certainty that God has made him both Lord and ChristMessiah this Jesus whom you crucified |
| 2:37 |
Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and to the restother of the apostles BrethrenBrothers what shallshould we do |
| 2:38 |
And Peter said to them Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ forso thethat forgivenessyour ofsins yourmay sinsbe forgiven; and you shallwill receive the gift of the Holy Spirit |
| 2:39 |
For the promise is tofor you andfor to your children and tofor all thatwho are far offaway everyeveryone one whom the Lord our God calls to him |
| 2:40 |
And he testified with many other wordsarguments and exhorted them saying Save yourselves from this crookedcorrupt generation |
| 2:41 |
So those who receivedwelcomed his wordmessage were baptized and there were added that day about three thousand soulspersons were added |
| 2:42 |
AndThey they devoted themselves to the apostles teaching and fellowship to the breaking of bread and the prayers |
| 2:43 |
AndAwe fear came upon everyeveryone soul;because and many wonders and signs were being done throughby the apostles |
| 2:44 |
AndAll all who believed were together and had all things in common; |
| 2:45 |
and they soldwould sell their possessions and goods and distributeddistribute themthe proceeds to all as any had need |
| 2:46 |
AndDay day by day attendingas they spent much time together in the temple togetherthey andbroke breaking bread inat theirhome homesand theyate partooktheir of food with glad and generous hearts |
| 2:47 |
praising God and having favorthe withgoodwill of all the people And day by day the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved |
| 3:1 |
NowOne day Peter and John were going up to the temple at the hour of prayer at three oclock in the ninthafternoon hour |
| 3:2 |
And a man lame from birth was being carried whomin theyPeople laidwould lay him daily at thatthe gate of the temple whichcalled isthe called Beautiful toGate so that he could ask for alms offrom those whoentering entered the temple |
| 3:3 |
SeeingWhen he saw Peter and John about to go into the temple he asked them for alms |
| 3:4 |
And Peter directedlooked hisintently gaze at him withas did John and said Look at us |
| 3:5 |
And he fixed his attention uponon them expecting to receive something from them |
| 3:6 |
But Peter said I have no silver andor gold but what I have I give you what I have; in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth stand up and walk |
| 3:8 |
AndJumping leaping up he stood and walkedbegan to walk and he entered the temple with them walking and leaping and praising God |
| 3:9 |
AndAll all the people saw him walking and praising God |
| 3:10 |
and they recognized him as the one who satused to sit and ask for alms at the Beautiful Gate of the temple; and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him |
| 3:11 |
While he clung to Peter and John all the people ran together to them in the portico called Solomons astoundedPortico utterly astonished |
| 3:12 |
AndWhen when Peter saw it he addressed the people MenYou ofIsraelites Israel why do you wonder at this or why do you stare at us as though by our own power or piety we had made him walk |
| 3:13 |
The God of Abraham andthe God of Isaac and the God of Jacob the God of our fathersancestors has glorified his servant Jesus whom you deliveredhanded upover and deniedrejected in the presence of Pilate whenthough he had decided to release him |
| 3:14 |
But you deniedrejected the Holy and Righteous One and asked forto have a murderer togiven be granted to you |
| 3:15 |
and you killed the Author of life whom God raised from the dead To this we are witnesses |
| 3:16 |
And his name by faith in his name his name itself has made this man strong whom you see and know; and the faith whichthat is through Jesus has given thehim man this perfect health in the presence of all of you all |
| 3:17 |
And now brethrenfriends I know that you acted in ignorance as did also your rulers |
| 3:18 |
ButIn whatthis way God foretoldfulfilled bywhat thehe mouthhad offoretold through all the prophets that his ChristMessiah shouldwould suffer he thus fulfilled |
| 3:19 |
Repent therefore and turn againto God so that your sins may be blottedwiped out that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord |
| 3:20 |
so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord and that he may send the ChristMessiah appointed for you that is Jesus |
| 3:21 |
whomwho heaven must receiveremain in heaven until the time forof establishinguniversal allrestoration that God spokeannounced bylong theago mouththrough of his holy prophets from of old |
| 3:22 |
Moses said The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet from your brethrenown aspeople hea raisedprophet like me up You shallmust listen to him in whatever he tells you |
| 3:23 |
And it shallwill be that everyeveryone soulwho that does not listen to that prophet shallwill be destroyedutterly fromrooted out of the people |
| 3:24 |
And all the prophets whoas many as have spoken from Samuel and those whoafter camehim afterwards also proclaimedpredicted these days |
| 3:25 |
You are the sonsdescendants of the prophets and of the covenant whichthat God gave to your fathersancestors saying to Abraham And in your posteritydescendants shall all the families of the earth shall be blessed |
| 3:26 |
When God having raised up his servant he sent him first to you first to bless you inby turning everyeach one of you from your wickednesswicked ways |
| 4:1 |
AndWhile asPeter theyand John were speaking to the people the priests and the captain of the temple and the Sad′duceesSadducees came uponto them |
| 4:2 |
much annoyed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming that in Jesus there is the resurrection fromof the dead |
| 4:3 |
AndSo they arrested them and put them in custody until the morrownext day for it was already evening |
| 4:4 |
But many of those who heard the word believed; and thethey numbernumbered of the men came to about five thousand |
| 4:5 |
OnThe thenext morrowday their rulers and elders and scribes wereassembled gathered together in Jerusalem |
| 4:6 |
with Annas the high priest andCaiaphas Ca′iaphas and John and Alexander and all who were of the high priestly family |
| 4:7 |
AndWhen when they had setmade themthe prisoners stand in thetheir midst they inquired By what power or by what name did you do this |
| 4:9 |
if we are beingquestioned examined today concerningbecause of a good deed done to asomeone cripplewho bywas whatsick meansand are asked how this man has been healed |
| 4:10 |
belet it be known to all of you all and to all the people of Israel that this man is standing before you in good health by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth whom you crucified whom God raised from the dead by him this man is standing before you well |
| 4:11 |
This Jesus is the stone whichthat was rejected by you the builders; butit which has become the head of the corner cornerstone |
| 4:12 |
AndThere there is salvation in no one else for there is no other name under heaven given among menmortals by which we must be saved |
| 4:13 |
Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John and perceivedrealized that they were uneducated commonand ordinary men they wondered;were amazed and they recognized thatthem theyas hadcompanions beenof with Jesus |
| 4:14 |
ButWhen seeingthey saw the man thatwho had been healedcured standing beside them they had nothing to say in opposition |
| 4:15 |
ButSo when they hadordered commanded them to goleave aside out of the council while they conferreddiscussed the matter with one another |
| 4:16 |
sayingThey said What shallwill we do with thesethem men For thatit ais notableobvious signto hasall beenwho performedlive throughin themJerusalem isthat manifesta tonotable allsign thehas inhabitantsbeen ofdone Jerusalemthrough andthem; we cannot deny it |
| 4:17 |
But into orderkeep that it mayfrom spreadspreading no further among the people let us warn them to speak no more to anyanyone one in this name |
| 4:18 |
So they called them and chargedordered them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus |
| 4:19 |
But Peter and John answered them Whether it is right in theGods sight of God to listen to you rather than to God you must judge; |
| 4:20 |
for we cannot butkeep speakfrom ofspeaking about what we have seen and heard |
| 4:21 |
AndAfter whenthreatening theythem hadagain further threatened them they let them go finding no way to punish them because of the people; for all menof them praised God for what had happened |
| 4:22 |
For the man on whom this sign of healing washad been performed was more than forty years old |
| 4:23 |
WhenAfter they were released they went to their friends and reported what the chief priests and the elders had said to them |
| 4:24 |
AndWhen when they heard it they liftedraised their voices together to God and said Sovereign Lord who didstmade make the heaven and the earth and the sea and everything in them |
| 4:25 |
it is you who said by the mouthHoly ofSpirit through our fatherancestor David thyyour servant: didst say by the Holy Spirit Why did the Gentiles rage and the peoples imagine vain things |
| 4:26 |
The kings of the earth settook themselvestheir instand array and the rulers werehave gathered together against the Lord and against his Anointed—Messiah |
| 4:27 |
forFor truly in this city therein werefact gathered together against thy holy servant Jesus whom thou didst anoint both Herod and Pontius Pilate with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel gathered together against your holy servant Jesus whom you anointed |
| 4:28 |
to do whatever thyyour hand and thyyour plan had predestined to take place |
| 4:29 |
And now Lord look uponat their threats and grant to thyyour servants to speak thyyour word with all boldness |
| 4:30 |
while thouyou stretcheststretch out thyyour hand to heal and signs and wonders are performed through the name of thyyour holy servant Jesus |
| 4:31 |
AndWhen when they had prayed the place in which they were gathered together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God with boldness |
| 4:32 |
Now the companywhole group of those who believed were of one heart and soul and no one saidclaimed thatprivate anyownership of theany thingspossessions whichbut heeverything possessedthey owned was hisheld own but they had everything in common |
| 4:33 |
AndWith with great power the apostles gave their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus and great grace was upon them all |
| 4:34 |
There was not a needy person among them for as many as wereowned possessors of lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold |
| 4:35 |
andThey laid it at the apostles feet; and distributionit was madedistributed to each as any had need |
| 4:36 |
ThusThere Josephwas whoa wasLevite surnameda bynative of Cyprus Joseph to whom the apostles gave the name Barnabas which means Sonson of encouragement a Levite a native of Cyprus |
| 4:37 |
He sold a field whichthat belonged to him andthen brought the money and laid it at the apostles feet |
| 5:1 |
But a man named Anani′asAnanias with the consent of his wife Sapphi′raSapphira sold a piece of property; |
| 5:2 |
and with his wifes knowledge he kept back some of the proceeds and brought only a part and laid it at the apostles feet |
| 5:3 |
ButAnanias Peter saidasked Anani′as why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back part of the proceeds of the land |
| 5:4 |
While it remained unsold did it not remain your own And after it was sold waswere it not the proceeds at your disposal How is it that you have contrived this deed in your heart You havedid not liedlie to menus but to God |
| 5:5 |
WhenNow Anani′aswhen Ananias heard these words he fell down and died And great fear cameseized upon all who heard of it |
| 5:6 |
The young men rosecame and wrapped him up andhis body then carried him out and buried him |
| 5:8 |
And Peter said to her Tell me whether you and your husband sold the land for sosuch muchand such a price And she said Yes forthat sowas muchthe price |
| 5:9 |
ButThen Peter said to her How is it that you have agreed together to temptput the Spirit of the Lord Harkto the test Look the feet of those thatwho have buried your husband are at the door and they will carry you out |
| 5:10 |
Immediately she fell down at his feet and died When the young men came in they found her dead andso they carried her out and buried her beside her husband |
| 5:11 |
And great fear cameseized upon the whole church and upon all who heard of these things |
| 5:12 |
Now many signs and wonders were done among the people bythrough the hands of the apostles And they were all together in Solomons Portico |
| 5:13 |
None of the rest dared to join them but the people held them in high honoresteem |
| 5:14 |
AndYet more than ever believers were added to the Lord multitudesgreat bothnumbers of both men and women |
| 5:15 |
so that they even carried out the sick into the streets and laid them on bedscots and palletsmats thatin asorder Peterthat camePeters by at least his shadow might fall on some of them as he came by |
| 5:16 |
TheA great number of people would also gatheredgather from the towns around Jerusalem bringing the sick and those afflictedtormented withby unclean spirits and they were all healedcured |
| 5:17 |
ButThen the high priest rosetook upaction; he and all who were with him that is the partysect of the Sad′duceesSadducees andbeing filled with jealousy |
| 5:18 |
they arrested the apostles and put them in the commonpublic prison |
| 5:19 |
But atduring the night an angel of the Lord opened the prison doors and brought them out and said |
| 5:20 |
Go and stand in the temple and speaktell to the people all the wordswhole ofmessage about this Lifelife |
| 5:21 |
AndWhen when they heard this they entered the temple at daybreak and taughtwent Nowon with their teaching When the high priest came and those who were with him andarrived they called together the council and allthe whole body of the senateelders of Israel and sent to the prison to have them brought |
| 5:22 |
But when the officerstemple camepolice went there they did not find them in the prison; andso they returned and reported |
| 5:23 |
We found the prison securely locked and the sentriesguards standing at the doors but when we opened itthem we found no one inside |
| 5:24 |
Now when the captain of the temple and the chief priests heard these words they were much perplexed about them wondering what thismight wouldbe comegoing toon |
| 5:25 |
AndThen somesomeone onearrived came and toldannounced themLook Thethe men whom you put in prison are standing in the temple and teaching the people |
| 5:26 |
Then the captain went with the officerstemple wentpolice and brought them but without violence for they were afraid of being stoned by the people |
| 5:27 |
AndWhen when they had brought them they sethad them stand before the council AndThe the high priest questioned them |
| 5:28 |
saying We strictlygave charged you strict orders not to teach in this name yet here you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and you intendare determined to bring this mans blood uponon us |
| 5:29 |
But Peter and the apostles answered We must obey God rather than menany human authority |
| 5:30 |
The God of our fathersancestors raised up Jesus whom you had killed by hanging him on a tree |
| 5:31 |
God exalted him at his right hand as Leader and Savior tothat he might give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins |
| 5:34 |
But a Pharisee in the council named Gama′liGamaliel el a teacher of the law heldrespected in honor by all the people stood up and ordered the men to be put outside for a whileshort time |
| 5:35 |
AndThen he said to them MenFellow ofIsraelites Israelconsider takecarefully care what you propose to do withto these men |
| 5:36 |
For beforesome thesetime daysago Theu′dasTheudas aroserose givingup himselfclaiming out to be somebody and a number of men about four hundred joined him; but he was slainkilled and all who followed him were dispersed and camedisappeared to nothing |
| 5:37 |
After him Judas the Galilean aroserose inup at the daystime of the census and drewgot awaypeople someto offollow the people after him; he also perished and all who followed him were scattered |
| 5:38 |
So in the present case I tell you keep away from these men and let them alone; forbecause if this plan or this undertaking is of menhuman origin it will fail; |
| 5:39 |
but if it is of God you will not be able to overthrow them—in Youthat mightcase you may even be found opposingfighting against God They were convinced by him |
| 5:40 |
So they took his advice and when they had called in the apostles they beathad them andflogged chargedThen they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus and let them go |
| 5:41 |
ThenAs they left the presencecouncil ofthey therejoiced council rejoicing that they were countedconsidered worthy to suffer dishonor for the sake of the name |
| 5:42 |
And every day in the temple and at home they did not cease teachingto teach and preachingproclaim Jesus as the ChristMessiah |
| 6:1 |
Now induring thesethose days when the disciples were increasing in number the Hellenists murmuredcomplained against the Hebrews because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution of food |
| 6:2 |
And the twelve summonedcalled together the bodywhole community of the disciples and said It is not right that we should giveneglect up preaching the word of God in order to servewait on tables |
| 6:3 |
Therefore brethrenfriends pickselect out from among youyourselves seven men of good reputestanding full of the Spirit and of wisdom whom we may appoint to this dutytask |
| 6:4 |
Butwhile we for our part will devote ourselves to prayer and to theserving ministry of the word |
| 6:5 |
AndWhat what they said pleased the whole multitudecommunity and they chose Stephen a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit andtogether with Philip andProchorus Proch′orusNicanor and Nica′nor and Timon andParmenas Par′menas and Nicola′usNicolaus a proselyte of Antioch |
| 6:6 |
TheseThey theyhad setthese men stand before the apostles andwho they prayed and laid their hands uponon them |
| 6:7 |
AndThe the word of God increasedcontinued to spread; and the number of the disciples multipliedincreased greatly in Jerusalem and a great many of the priests werebecame obedient to the faith |
| 6:8 |
And Stephen full of grace and power did great wonders and signs among the people |
| 6:9 |
Then some of those who belonged to the synagogue of the Freedmen as it was called andCyrenians ofAlexandrians the Cyre′nians and ofothers the Alexandrians and of those from Cili′ciaCilicia and Asia arosestood up and disputedargued with Stephen |
| 6:11 |
Then they secretly instigated some men whoto saidsay We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and God |
| 6:12 |
AndThey they stirred up the people andas well as the elders and the scribes; andthen they camesuddenly uponconfronted him and seized him and brought him before the council |
| 6:13 |
andThey set up false witnesses who said This man never ceasesstops tosaying speakthings words against this holy place and the law; |
| 6:14 |
for we have heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place and will change the customs whichthat Moses deliveredhanded on to us |
| 6:15 |
And gazing at him all who sat in the council looked intently at him and they saw that his face was like the face of an angel |
| 7:1 |
AndThen the high priest saidasked Ishim thisAre these things so |
| 7:2 |
And Stephen saidreplied: BrethrenBrothers and fathers hearlisten to me The God of glory appeared to our fatherancestor Abraham when he was in Mesopota′miaMesopotamia before he lived in Haran |
| 7:3 |
and said to him DepartLeave from your landcountry and from your kindredrelatives and go intoto the land whichthat I will show you |
| 7:4 |
Then he departedleft from the landcountry of the Chalde′ansChaldeans and livedsettled in Haran AndAfter after his father died God removedhad him move from there intoto this landcountry in which you are now living; |
| 7:5 |
yetHe hedid gavenot give him noany inheritanceof in it as a heritage not even a foots length but promised to give it to him inas his possession and to his posteritydescendants after him even though he had no child |
| 7:6 |
And God spoke toin thisthese effectterms that his posteritydescendants would be resident aliens in a landcountry belonging to others who would enslave them and illmistreat treat them during four hundred years |
| 7:7 |
But I will judge the nation whichthat they serve said God and after that they shall come out and worship me in this place |
| 7:8 |
AndThen he gave him the covenant of circumcision And so Abraham became the father of Isaac and circumcised him on the eighth day; and Isaac became the father of Jacob and Jacob of the twelve patriarchs |
| 7:9 |
AndThe the patriarchs jealous of Joseph sold him into Egypt; but God was with him |
| 7:10 |
and rescued him outfrom of all his afflictions and gaveenabled him to win favor and to show wisdom when he stood before Pharaoh king of Egypt who madeappointed him governorruler over Egypt and over all his household |
| 7:11 |
Now there came a famine throughout all Egypt and Canaan and great afflictionsuffering and our fathersancestors could find no food |
| 7:12 |
But when Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt he sent forth our fathersancestors thethere on their first timevisit |
| 7:13 |
AndOn at the second visit Joseph made himself known to his brothers and Josephs family became known to Pharaoh |
| 7:14 |
AndThen Joseph sent and calledinvited tohis himfather Jacob his father and all his kindredrelatives to come to him seventy five soulsin all; |
| 7:15 |
andso Jacob went down intoto Egypt AndHe hehimself died himselfthere andas well as our fathersancestors |
| 7:16 |
and theytheir bodies were carriedbrought back to Shechem and laid in the tomb that Abraham had bought for a sum of silver from the sons of Hamor in Shechem |
| 7:17 |
But as the time drew near for the fulfillment of the promise drewthat near which God had grantedmade to Abraham theour people grewin Egypt increased and multiplied in Egypt |
| 7:18 |
tilluntil there arose over Egypt another king who had not known Joseph ruled over Egypt |
| 7:19 |
He dealt craftily with our race and forced our fathersancestors to exposeabandon their infants so that they mightwould notdie be kept alive |
| 7:20 |
At this time Moses was born and he was beautiful before God AndFor three months he was brought up for three months in his fathers house; |
| 7:21 |
and when he was exposedabandoned Pharaohs daughter adopted him and brought him up as her own son |
| 7:22 |
AndSo Moses was instructed in all the wisdom of the Egyptians and he was mightypowerful in his words and deeds |
| 7:23 |
When he was forty years old it came into his heart to visit his brethrenrelatives the sonsIsraelites of Israel |
| 7:24 |
AndWhen seeinghe saw one of them being wronged he defended the oppressed man and avenged him by striking down the Egyptian |
| 7:25 |
He supposed that his brethrenkinsfolk understoodwould understand that God through him was givingrescuing them deliverance by his hand but they did not understand |
| 7:26 |
AndThe onnext the following day he appearedcame to some of them as they were quarreling and wouldtried haveto reconciledreconcile them saying Men you are brethrenbrothers; why do you wrong each other |
| 7:27 |
But the man who was wronging his neighbor thrustpushed himMoses aside saying Who made you a ruler and a judge over us |
| 7:29 |
AtWhen he heard this retort Moses fled and became ana exileresident alien in the land of Mid′ianMidian whereThere he became the father of two sons |
| 7:30 |
Now when forty years had passed an angel appeared to him in the wilderness of Mount Sinai in athe flame of firea inburning a bush |
| 7:31 |
When Moses saw it he wonderedwas amazed at the sight; and as he drewapproached near to look there came the voice of the Lord: came |
| 7:32 |
I am the God of your fathersancestors the God of Abraham and of Isaac and of Jacob And Moses trembledbegan to tremble and did not dare to look |
| 7:33 |
AndThen the Lord said to him Take off the shoessandals from your feet for the place where you are standing is holy ground |
| 7:34 |
I have surely seen the illmistreatment treatment of my people thatwho are in Egypt and have heard their groaning and I have come down to deliverrescue them AndCome now come I will send you to Egypt |
| 7:35 |
ThisIt was this Moses whom they refusedrejected sayingwhen they said Who made you a ruler and a judge and whom God now sent as both ruler and delivererliberator bythrough the hand of the angel thatwho appeared to him in the bush |
| 7:36 |
He led them out having performed wonders and signs in Egypt and at the Red Sea and in the wilderness for forty years |
| 7:37 |
This is the Moses who said to the Israelites God will raise up a prophet for you a prophet from your brethrenown people as he raised me up |
| 7:38 |
ThisHe is hethe one who was in the congregation in the wilderness with the angel who spoke to him at Mount Sinai and with our fathersancestors; and he received living oracles to give to us |
| 7:39 |
Our fathersancestors refusedwere unwilling to obey him; butinstead thrustthey pushed him aside and in their hearts they turned back to Egypt |
| 7:40 |
saying to Aaron Make gods for us godswho towill golead beforethe way for us; as for this Moses who led us out from the land of Egypt we do not know what has becomehappened ofto him |
| 7:41 |
AndAt that time they made a calf in those days and offered a sacrifice to the idol and rejoicedreveled in the works of their hands |
| 7:42 |
But God turned away from them and gavehanded them over to worship the host of heaven as it is written in the book of the prophets: Did you offer to me slain beastsvictims and sacrifices forty years in the wilderness O house of Israel |
| 7:43 |
AndNo; you took upalong the tent of Moloch and the star of theyour god Rephan the figuresimages whichthat you made to worship; andso I will remove you beyond Babylon |
| 7:44 |
Our fathersancestors had the tent of witnesstestimony in the wilderness even as God directed when he who spoke to Moses directedordering him to make it according to the pattern that he had seen |
| 7:45 |
Our fathersancestors in turn brought it in with Joshua when they dispossessed the nations whichthat God thrustdrove out before our fathersancestors SoAnd it was there until the daystime of David |
| 7:46 |
who found favor inwith the sight of God and asked leavethat tohe might find a habitationdwelling place for the Godhouse of Jacob |
| 7:48 |
Yet the Most High does not dwell in houses made with human hands; as the prophet says |
| 7:49 |
Heaven is my throne and the earth is my footstool What kind of house will you build for me says the Lord or what is the place of my rest |
| 7:51 |
You stiff necked people uncircumcised in heart and ears you alwaysare resistforever opposing the Holy Spirit Asjust as your fathersancestors didused soto do you |
| 7:52 |
Which of the prophets did not your fathersancestors not persecute AndThey they killed those who announcedforetold beforehand the coming of the Righteous One whomand now you have nowbecome betrayedhis betrayers and murderedmurderers |
| 7:53 |
youYou whoare the ones that received the law as deliveredordained by angels and didyet you have not keepkept it |
| 7:54 |
NowWhen when they heard these things they werebecame enraged and they ground their teeth againstat himStephen |
| 7:55 |
But hefilled fullwith of the Holy Spirit he gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God; |
| 7:56 |
andLook he said Behold I see the heavens opened and the Son of manMan standing at the right hand of God |
| 7:57 |
But they criedcovered outtheir ears and with a loud voiceshout andall stopped their ears and rushed together uponagainst him |
| 7:58 |
Then they castdragged him out of the city and stonedbegan to stone him; and the witnesses laid down their garmentscoats at the feet of a young man named Saul |
| 7:59 |
AndWhile as they were stoning Stephen he prayed Lord Jesus receive my spirit |
| 7:60 |
AndThen he knelt down and cried without in a loud voice Lord do not hold this sin against them AndWhen when he had said this he fell asleep died |
| 8:1 |
And Saul wasapproved consentingof totheir hiskilling deathhim AndThat on that day a greatsevere persecution arosebegan against the church in Jerusalem; and theyall except the apostles were all scattered throughout the regioncountryside of Judea and Samar′iaSamaria except the apostles |
| 8:2 |
Devout men buried Stephen and made greatloud lamentation over him |
| 8:3 |
But Saul was ravaging the church andby entering house after house; hedragging dragged off both men and women andhe committed them to prison |
| 8:4 |
Now those who were scattered went aboutfrom preachingplace to place proclaiming the word |
| 8:5 |
Philip went down to athe city of Samar′iaSamaria and proclaimed the Messiah to them the Christ |
| 8:6 |
AndThe thecrowds multitudes with one accord gavelistened heedeagerly to what was said by Philip whenhearing they heard him and sawseeing the signs whichthat he did |
| 8:7 |
Forfor unclean spirits crying with loud shrieks came out of many who were possessed crying with a loud voice; and many others who were paralyzed or lame were healedcured |
| 8:8 |
So there was muchgreat joy in that city |
| 8:9 |
ButNow therea wascertain a man named Simon who had previously practiced magic in the city and amazed the nationpeople of Samar′iaSamaria saying that he himself was somebodysomeone great |
| 8:10 |
TheyAll allof gavethem heed to him from the least to the greatest listened to him eagerly saying This man is thatthe power of God whichthat is called Great |
| 8:11 |
And they gavelistened heedeagerly to him because for a long time he had amazed them with his magic |
| 8:12 |
But when they believed Philip aswho hewas preachedproclaiming the good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ they were baptized both men and women |
| 8:13 |
Even Simon himself believed andAfter after being baptized he continuedstayed constantly with Philip Andand seeingwas amazed when he saw the signs and great miracles performedthat hetook was amazedplace |
| 8:14 |
Now when the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samar′iaSamaria had receivedaccepted the word of God they sent to them Peter and John to them |
| 8:15 |
whoThe cametwo went down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit; |
| 8:16 |
for itas yet the Spirit had not yetcome fallenupon on any of them; but they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus |
| 8:17 |
Then theyPeter and John laid their hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit |
| 8:19 |
saying Give me also this power so that anyanyone one on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit |
| 8:20 |
But Peter said to him YourMay your silver perish with you because you thought you could obtain theGods gift of God with money |
| 8:21 |
You have neitherno part noror lotshare in this matter for your heart is not right before God |
| 8:23 |
For I see that you are in the gall of bitterness and in the bondchains of iniquitywickedness |
| 8:24 |
And Simon answered Pray for me to the Lord that nothing of what you have said may comehappen uponto me |
| 8:25 |
Now whenafter theyPeter and John had testified and spoken the word of the Lord they returned to Jerusalem preachingproclaiming the gospelgood news to many villages of the Samaritans |
| 8:26 |
ButThen an angel of the Lord said to Philip RiseGet up and go toward the south to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza This is a desertwilderness road |
| 8:27 |
AndSo he rosegot up and went AndNow beholdthere was an Ethiopian a eunuch a ministercourt official of the Can′daceCandace queen of the Ethiopians in charge of all her treasureentire treasury He had come to Jerusalem to worship |
| 8:28 |
and was returning home; seated in his chariot he was reading the prophet Isaiah |
| 8:29 |
AndThen the Spirit said to Philip Go upover to this chariot and join thisit chariot |
| 8:30 |
So Philip ran up to himit and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet andIsaiah He asked Do you understand what you are reading |
| 8:31 |
AndHe hereplied said How can I unless somesomeone one guides me And he invited Philip to comeget upin and sit withbeside him |
| 8:32 |
Now the passage of the scripture whichthat he was reading was this: AsLike a sheep he was led to the slaughter orand like a lamb silent before its shearer is dumb so he opensdoes not open his mouth |
| 8:33 |
In his humiliation justice was denied him Who can describe his generation For his life is taken upaway from the earth |
| 8:34 |
AndThe the eunuch saidasked to Philip About whom praymay I ask you does the prophet say this about himself or about somesomeone one else |
| 8:35 |
Then Philip openedbegan histo mouthspeak and beginningstarting with this scripture he toldproclaimed to him the good news ofabout Jesus |
| 8:36 |
AndAs as they wentwere going along the road they came to some water; and the eunuch said SeeLook here is water What is to prevent myme from being baptized |
| 8:38 |
AndHe he commanded the chariot to stop and they both wentof downthem intoPhilip and the watereunuch Philipwent anddown into the eunuchwater and hePhilip baptized him |
| 8:39 |
AndWhen when they came up out of the water the Spirit of the Lord caughtsnatched upPhilip Philipaway; and the eunuch saw him no more and went on his way rejoicing |
| 8:40 |
But Philip was found himself at Azo′tusAzotus and as he was passing onthrough the region he preachedproclaimed the gospelgood news to all the towns tilluntil he came to Caesare′aCaesarea |
| 9:1 |
ButMeanwhile Saul still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord went to the high priest |
| 9:2 |
and asked him for letters to the synagogues at Damascus so that if he found any belongingwho belonged to the Way men or women he might bring them bound to Jerusalem |
| 9:3 |
Now as he journeyedwas hegoing approachedalong and approaching Damascus and suddenly a light from heaven flashed aboutaround him |
| 9:4 |
AndHe he fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him Saul Saul why do you persecute me |
| 9:5 |
AndHe heasked said Who are you Lord AndThe hereply saidcame I am Jesus whom you are persecuting; |
| 9:6 |
butBut riseget up and enter the city and you will be told what you are to do |
| 9:7 |
The men who were traveling with him stood speechless hearingbecause they heard the voice but seeingsaw no one |
| 9:8 |
Saul arosegot up from the ground; and whenthough his eyes were openedopen he could see nothing; so they led him by the hand and brought him into Damascus |
| 9:9 |
AndFor for three days he was without sight and neither ate nor drank |
| 9:10 |
Now there was a disciple atin Damascus named Anani′asAnanias The Lord said to him in a vision Anani′asAnanias AndHe heanswered said Here I am Lord |
| 9:11 |
AndThe the Lord said to him RiseGet up and go to the street called Straight and inquireat in the house of Judas look for a man of Tarsus named Saul; forAt beholdthis moment he is praying |
| 9:12 |
and he has seen in a vision a man named Anani′asAnanias come in and lay his hands on him so that he might regain his sight |
| 9:13 |
But Anani′asAnanias answered Lord I have heard from many about this man how much evil he has done to thyyour saints atin Jerusalem; |
| 9:14 |
and here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who callinvoke uponyour thy name |
| 9:15 |
But the Lord said to him Go for he is aan chosen instrument ofwhom mineI have chosen to carrybring my name before the Gentiles and kings and before the sonspeople of Israel; |
| 9:16 |
for I myself will show him how much he must suffer for the sake of my name |
| 9:17 |
So Anani′asAnanias departedwent and entered the house AndHe layinglaid his hands on himSaul heand said Brother Saul the Lord Jesus who appeared to you on theyour roadway byhere which you came has sent me so that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit |
| 9:18 |
And immediately something like scales fell from his eyes and he regained his sight was restored Then he rosegot up and was baptized |
| 9:19 |
and tookafter taking some food andhe wasregained strengthenedhis strength For several days he was with the disciples atin Damascus |
| 9:20 |
Andand inimmediately thehe synagoguesbegan immediatelyto heproclaim proclaimed Jesus in the synagogues saying He is the Son of God |
| 9:21 |
AndAll all who heard him were amazed and said Is not this the man who made havoc in Jerusalem ofamong those who calledinvoked on this name And has he hasnot come here for thisthe purpose toof bringbringing them bound before the chief priests |
| 9:22 |
But Saul increasedbecame allincreasingly the more inpowerful strength and confounded the Jews who lived in Damascus by proving that Jesus was the ChristMessiah |
| 9:23 |
WhenAfter manysome daystime had passed the Jews plotted to kill him |
| 9:24 |
but their plot became known to Saul They were watching the gates day and night toso that they might kill him; |
| 9:25 |
but his disciples took him by night and let him down overthrough an opening in the wall lowering him in a basket |
| 9:26 |
AndWhen when he had come to Jerusalem he attempted to join the disciples; and they were all afraid of him for they did not believe that he was a disciple |
| 9:27 |
But Barnabas took him and brought him to the apostles and declareddescribed tofor them how on the road he had seen the Lord who spokehad spoken to him and how atin Damascus he had preachedspoken boldly in the name of Jesus |
| 9:28 |
So he went in and out among them atin Jerusalem speaking boldly in the name of the Lord |
| 9:29 |
preachingHe boldly in the name of the Lord And he spoke and disputedargued againstwith the Hellenists; but they were seekingattempting to kill him |
| 9:30 |
AndWhen when the brethrenbelievers knewlearned of it they brought him down to Caesare′aCaesarea and sent him off to Tarsus |
| 9:31 |
SoMeanwhile the church throughout all Judea and Galilee and Samar′iaSamaria had peace and was built up; andLiving walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit it wasincreased multipliedin numbers |
| 9:32 |
Now as Peter went here and there among them all the believers he came down also to the saints thatliving livedin at Lydda |
| 9:33 |
There he found a man named Aene′asAeneas who had been bedridden for eight years andfor he was paralyzed |
| 9:34 |
And Peter said to him Aene′asAeneas Jesus Christ heals you; riseget up and make your bed And immediately he rosegot up |
| 9:35 |
And all the residents of Lydda and Sharon saw him and they turned to the Lord |
| 9:36 |
Now in Joppa there was at Joppa a disciple namedwhose name was Tabitha which meansin Greek is Dorcas She was fulldevoted ofto good works and acts of charity |
| 9:37 |
InAt thosethat daystime she fellbecame sickill and died; andWhen when they had washed her they laid her in ana upper room upstairs |
| 9:38 |
Since Lydda was near Joppa the disciples hearingwho heard that Peter was there sent two men to him entreatingwith himthe request Please come to us without delay |
| 9:39 |
So Peter rosegot up and went with them; Andand when he hadarrived come they took him to the upper room upstairs All the widows stood beside him weeping and showing tunics and other garmentsclothing whichthat Dorcas had made while she was with them |
| 9:40 |
But Peter put all of them all outside and then he knelt down and prayed; thenHe turningturned to the body heand said Tabitha riseget Andup Then she opened her eyes and whenseeing she saw Peter she sat up |
| 9:41 |
AndHe he gave her his hand and liftedhelped her up Then calling the saints and widows he presentedshowed her to be alive |
| 9:42 |
AndThis it became known throughout all Joppa and many believed in the Lord |
| 9:43 |
AndMeanwhile he stayed in Joppa for manysome daystime with onea certain Simon a tanner |
| 10:1 |
AtIn Caesare′aCaesarea there was a man named Cornelius a centurion of whatthe wasItalian knownCohort as theit Italianwas Cohortcalled |
| 10:2 |
He was a devout man who feared God with all his household; he gave alms liberallygenerously to the people and prayed constantly to God |
| 10:3 |
AboutOne theafternoon ninthat hourabout ofthree theoclock day he sawhad clearlya vision in awhich visionhe clearly saw an angel of God coming in and saying to him Cornelius |
| 10:4 |
AndHe he stared at him in terror and said What is it Lord AndHe heanswered said to him Your prayers and your alms have ascended as a memorial before God |
| 10:5 |
AndNow now send men to Joppa andfor bringa onecertain Simon who is called Peter; |
| 10:7 |
When the angel who spoke to him had departedleft he called two of his servantsslaves and a devout soldier from amongthe ranks of those thatwho waitedserved on him |
| 10:8 |
and havingafter relatedtelling them everything to them he sent them to Joppa |
| 10:9 |
TheAbout noon the next day as they were on their journey and comingapproaching near the city Peter went up on the housetoproof to pray about the sixth hour |
| 10:10 |
AndHe he became hungry and desiredwanted something to eat; butand while theyit werewas preparingbeing itprepared he fell into a trance |
| 10:11 |
andHe saw the heaven opened and something descending like a greatlarge sheet letcoming down being lowered to the ground by its four corners upon the earth |
| 10:12 |
In it were all kinds of animalsfour footed creatures and reptiles and birds of the air |
| 10:13 |
AndThen therehe cameheard a voice tosaying himGet Riseup Peter; kill and eat |
| 10:14 |
But Peter said NoBy no means Lord; for I have never eaten anything that is commonprofane or unclean |
| 10:15 |
AndThe the voice camesaid to him again a second time What God has cleansedmade clean you must not call commonprofane |
| 10:16 |
This happened three times and the thing was suddenly taken up at once to heaven |
| 10:17 |
Now while Peter was inwardlygreatly perplexedpuzzled asabout what to whatmake of the vision whichthat he had seen mightsuddenly mean behold the men that were sent by Cornelius havingappeared madeThey inquirywere asking for Simons house stoodand beforewere standing by the gate |
| 10:18 |
andThey called out to ask whether Simon who was called Peter was lodgingstaying there |
| 10:19 |
AndWhile while Peter was ponderingstill thinking about the vision the Spirit said to him BeholdLook three men are lookingsearching for you |
| 10:20 |
RiseNow andget up go down and accompanygo with them without hesitation; for I have sent them |
| 10:21 |
AndSo Peter went down to the men and said I am the one you are looking for; what is the reason for your coming |
| 10:22 |
AndThey theyanswered said Cornelius a centurion an upright and God fearing man who is well spoken of by the whole Jewish nation was directed by a holy angel to send for you to come to his house and to hear what you have to say |
| 10:23 |
So hePeter calledinvited them in toand begave histhem guestslodging The next day he rosegot up and went off with them and some of the brethrenbelievers from Joppa accompanied him |
| 10:24 |
AndThe on the following day they enteredcame Caesare′ato Caesarea Cornelius was expecting them and had called together his kinsmenrelatives and close friends |
| 10:25 |
WhenOn PeterPeters enteredarrival Cornelius met him and fellfalling down at his feet and worshiped him |
| 10:26 |
But Peter liftedmade him get up saying Stand up; I too am only a manmortal |
| 10:27 |
And as he talked with him he went in and found that many personshad gatheredassembled; |
| 10:28 |
and he said to them You yourselves know howthat unlawful it is unlawful for a Jew to associate with or to visit anya one of another nationGentile; but God has shown me that I should not call anyanyone manprofane common or unclean |
| 10:29 |
So when I was sent for I came without objection Now may I ask then why you sent for me |
| 10:30 |
And Cornelius saidreplied Four days ago aboutat this very hour Iat wasthree keepingoclock theI ninthwas hourpraying of prayer in my house; andwhen beholdsuddenly a man in dazzling clothes stood before me in bright apparel |
| 10:31 |
sayingHe said Cornelius your prayer has been heard and your alms have been remembered before God |
| 10:32 |
Send therefore to Joppa and ask for Simon who is called Peter; he is lodgingstaying in the househome of Simon a tanner by the seasidesea |
| 10:33 |
SoTherefore I sent tofor you atimmediately once and you have been kind enough to come NowSo thereforenow weall of us are all here present in the sightpresence of God to hearlisten to all that youthe haveLord beenhas commanded byyou theto Lordsay |
| 10:34 |
AndThen Peter openedbegan histo mouthspeak andto saidthem: Truly I perceivetruly understand that God shows no partiality |
| 10:35 |
but in every nation anyanyone one who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him |
| 10:36 |
You know the wordmessage which he sent to Israelthe preachingpeople goodof newsIsrael ofpreaching peace by Jesus Christ —he is Lord of all |
| 10:37 |
theThat wordmessage whichspread was proclaimed throughout all Judea beginning fromin Galilee after the baptism whichthat John preachedannounced: |
| 10:38 |
how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all thatwho were oppressed by the devil for God was with him |
| 10:39 |
AndWe we are witnesses to all that he did both in theJudea country of the Jews and in Jerusalem They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; |
| 10:40 |
but God raised him on the third day and madeallowed him manifest;to appear |
| 10:41 |
not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses and who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead |
| 10:42 |
AndHe he commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one ordained by God toas be judge of the living and the dead |
| 10:43 |
ToAll him all the prophets beartestify witnessabout him that everyeveryone one who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name |
| 10:44 |
While Peter was still sayingspeaking this the Holy Spirit fell onupon all who heard the word |
| 10:45 |
AndThe thecircumcised believers fromwho amonghad thecome circumcised who came with Peter were amazedastounded becausethat the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles |
| 10:46 |
Forfor they heard them speaking in tongues and extolling God Then Peter declaredsaid |
| 10:47 |
Can anyanyone onewithhold forbidthe water for baptizing these people who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have |
| 10:48 |
AndSo he commandedordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ Then they askedinvited him to remainstay for someseveral days |
| 11:1 |
Now the apostles and the brethrenbelievers who were in Judea heard that the Gentiles had also hadaccepted received the word of God |
| 11:2 |
So when Peter went up to Jerusalem the circumcisioncircumcised partybelievers criticized him |
| 11:4 |
ButThen Peter began andto explainedexplain it to them instep order:by step saying |
| 11:5 |
I was in the city of Joppa praying; and in a trance I saw a vision There was something descending like a greatlarge sheet letcoming down from heaven being lowered by its four corners; and it came downclose to me |
| 11:6 |
LookingAs I looked at it closely I observedsaw four footed animals and beasts of prey and reptiles and birds of the air |
| 11:7 |
And I also heard a voice saying to me RiseGet up Peter; kill and eat |
| 11:8 |
But I saidreplied NoBy no means Lord; for nothing commonprofane or unclean has ever entered my mouth |
| 11:9 |
But a second time the voice answered a second time from heaven What God has cleansedmade clean you must not call commonprofane |
| 11:10 |
This happened three times; andthen alleverything was drawnpulled up again intoto heaven |
| 11:11 |
At that very moment three men sent to me from Caesarea arrived at the house inwhere which we were sent to me from Caesare′a |
| 11:12 |
AndThe the Spirit told me to go with them makingand nonot to make a distinction between them and us These six brethrenbrothers also accompanied me and we entered the mans house |
| 11:13 |
AndHe he told us how he had seen the angel standing in his house and saying Send to Joppa and bring Simon who is called Peter; |
| 11:14 |
he will declaregive to you a message by which you willand beyour savedentire youhousehold andwill allbe yoursaved household |
| 11:15 |
AsAnd as I began to speak the Holy Spirit fell onupon them just as onit had upon us at the beginning |
| 11:16 |
And I remembered the word of the Lord how he had said John baptized with water but you shallwill be baptized with the Holy Spirit |
| 11:17 |
If then God gave them the same gift tothat them as he gave to us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ who was I that I could withstandhinder God |
| 11:18 |
When they heard this they were silenced And they glorifiedpraised God saying Then God has given even to the Gentiles alsothe Godrepentance hasthat grantedleads repentanceto unto life |
| 11:19 |
Now those who were scattered because of the persecution that arosetook place over Stephen traveled as far as Phoeni′ciaPhoenicia and Cyprus and Antioch speakingand they spoke the word to noneno one except Jews |
| 11:20 |
But thereamong them were some of them men of Cyprus and Cyre′neCyrene who on coming to Antioch spoke to the GreeksHellenists also preachingproclaiming the Lord Jesus |
| 11:21 |
AndThe the hand of the Lord was with them and a great number thatbecame believedbelievers and turned to the Lord |
| 11:23 |
When he came and saw the grace of God he wasrejoiced glad; and he exhorted them all to remain faithful to the Lord with steadfast purposedevotion; |
| 11:24 |
for he was a good man full of the Holy Spirit and of faith And a largegreat companymany waspeople addedwere brought to the Lord |
| 11:25 |
SoThen Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul; |
| 11:26 |
and when he had found him he brought him to Antioch ForSo ait wholewas that for an entire year they met with the church and taught a largegreat companymany of people; and it was in Antioch that the disciples were for the first time called Christians |
| 11:27 |
NowAt inthat thesetime days prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch |
| 11:28 |
AndOne one of them named Ag′abusAgabus stood up and foretoldpredicted by the Spirit that there would be a greatsevere famine over all the world; and this took place induring the daysreign of Claudius |
| 11:29 |
AndThe the disciples determined everythat one according to histheir ability toeach would send relief to the brethrenbelievers wholiving lived in Judea; |
| 11:30 |
andthis they did so sending it to the elders by the hand of Barnabas and Saul |
| 12:1 |
About that time King Herod the king laid violent hands upon some who belonged to the church |
| 12:2 |
He killedhad James the brother of John killed with the sword; |
| 12:3 |
andAfter when he saw that it pleased the Jews he proceeded to arrest Peter also This was during the daysfestival of Unleavened Bread |
| 12:4 |
AndWhen when he had seized him he put him in prison and deliveredhanded him over to four squads of soldiers to guard him intending after the Passover to bring him out to the people after the Passover |
| 12:5 |
SoWhile Peter was kept in prison; butthe earnestchurch prayerprayed forfervently him was made to God byfor the churchhim |
| 12:6 |
The very night whenbefore Herod was aboutgoing to bring him out Peter bound with two chains was sleeping between two soldiers boundwhile withguards twoin chainsfront andof sentries before the door were guardingkeeping watch over the prison; |
| 12:7 |
andSuddenly behold an angel of the Lord appeared and a light shone in the cell; andHe hetapped struck Peter on the side and woke him saying Get up quickly And the chains fell off his handswrists |
| 12:8 |
AndThe the angel said to him DressFasten yourselfyour belt and put on your sandals AndHe he did so AndThen he said to him Wrap your mantlecloak around you and follow me |
| 12:9 |
AndPeter he went out and followed him; he did not knowrealize that what was donehappening bywith the angelangels help was real; buthe thought he was seeing a vision |
| 12:10 |
WhenAfter they had passed the first and the second guard they came tobefore the iron gate leading into the city It opened tofor them of its own accord and they went outoutside and passedwalked onalong througha onelane street;when andsuddenly immediately the angel left him |
| 12:11 |
AndThen Peter came to himself and said Now I am sure that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me from the handhands of Herod and from all that the Jewish people were expecting |
| 12:12 |
WhenAs soon as he realized this he went to the house of Mary the mother of John whose other name was Mark where many werehad gathered together and were praying |
| 12:13 |
AndWhen when he knocked at the doorouter ofgate the gateway a maid named Rhoda came to answer |
| 12:14 |
RecognizingOn recognizing Peters voice inshe herwas joyso sheoverjoyed didthat notinstead openof opening the gate butshe ran in and toldannounced that Peter was standing at the gate |
| 12:15 |
They said to her You are madout of your mind But she insisted that it was so They said It is his angel |
| 12:16 |
ButMeanwhile Peter continued knocking; and when they opened the gate they saw him and were amazed |
| 12:17 |
ButHe motioningmotioned to them with his hand to be silent heand described tofor them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison And he saidadded Tell this to James and to the brethrenbelievers Then he departedleft and went to another place |
| 12:18 |
NowWhen whenmorning day came there was no small stircommotion among the soldiers over what had become of Peter |
| 12:19 |
AndWhen when Herod had soughtsearched for him and could not find him he examined the sentriesguards and ordered thatthem theyto should be put to death Then he went down from Judea to Caesare′aCaesarea and remainedstayed there |
| 12:20 |
Now Herod was angry with the people of Tyre and Sidon; andSo they came to him in a body; and havingafter persuadedwinning over Blastus the kings chamberlain they asked for peacea reconciliation because their country depended on the kings country for food |
| 12:21 |
On an appointed day Herod put on his royal robes took his seat uponon the throneplatform and madedelivered ana orationpublic address to them |
| 12:22 |
AndThe the people shoutedkept shouting The voice of a god and not of mana mortal |
| 12:23 |
ImmediatelyAnd animmediately angelbecause ofhe thehad Lordnot smotegiven himthe becauseglory heto didGod notan giveangel Godof the glory;Lord struck him down and he was eaten by worms and died |
| 12:24 |
But the word of God grewcontinued to advance and multipliedgain adherents |
| 12:25 |
AndThen after completing their mission Barnabas and Saul returned fromto Jerusalem whenand theybrought had fulfilled their mission bringing with them John whose other name was Mark |
| 13:1 |
Now in the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers: Barnabas Simeon who was called Niger Lucius of Cyre′neCyrene Man′aManaen en a member of the court of Herod the tetrarchruler and Saul |
| 13:4 |
So being sent out by the Holy Spirit they went down to Seleu′ciaSeleucia; and from there they sailed to Cyprus |
| 13:5 |
When they arrived at Sal′amisSalamis they proclaimed the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews And they had John also to assist them |
| 13:6 |
When they had gone through the whole island as far as Paphos they camemet upon a certain magician a Jewish false prophet named Bar Jesus |
| 13:7 |
He was with the proconsul Sergius Paulus aan intelligent man of intelligence who summoned Barnabas and Saul and soughtwanted to hear the word of God |
| 13:8 |
But El′ymas the magician Elymas for that is the meaningtranslation of his name withstoodopposed them seekingand tried to turn away the proconsul away from the faith |
| 13:9 |
But Saul whoalso isknown alsoas called Paul filled with the Holy Spirit looked intently at him |
| 13:11 |
And now behold listen—the hand of the Lord is uponagainst you and you shallwill be blind andfor a while unable to see the sun for a time Immediately mist and darkness fellcame uponover him and he went about seekinggroping peoplefor someone to lead him by the hand |
| 13:12 |
ThenWhen the proconsul believed when he saw what had occurredhappened he believed for he was astonished at the teaching ofabout the Lord |
| 13:13 |
NowThen Paul and his companycompanions set sail from Paphos and came to Perga in Pamphyl′iaPamphylia And John however left them and returned to Jerusalem; |
| 13:14 |
but they passedwent on from Perga and came to Antioch ofin Pisid′iaPisidia And on the sabbath day they went into the synagogue and sat down |
| 13:15 |
After the reading of the law and the prophets the rulersofficials of the synagogue sent to them a message saying BrethrenBrothers if you have any word of exhortation for the people saygive it |
| 13:16 |
So Paul stood up and motioning with hisa handgesture saidbegan to speak: MenYou ofIsraelites Israel and youothers thatwho fear God listen |
| 13:17 |
The God of this people Israel chose our fathersancestors and made the people great during their stay in the land of Egypt and with uplifted arm he led them out of it |
| 13:18 |
AndFor for about forty years he boreput up with them in the wilderness |
| 13:19 |
AndAfter when he had destroyed seven nations in the land of Canaan he gave them their land as an inheritance for about four hundred and fifty years |
| 13:20 |
Andfor afterabout four hundred fifty years After that he gave them judges until Samuelthe time of the prophet Samuel |
| 13:21 |
Then they asked for a king; and God gave them Saul the son of Kish a man of the tribe of Benjamin who reigned for forty years |
| 13:22 |
AndWhen when he had removed him he raisedmade up David to be their king; ofIn whomhis hetestimony testifiedabout andhim he said I have found in David the son of Jesse to be a man after my heart who will docarry out all my willwishes |
| 13:23 |
Of this mans posterity God has brought to Israel a Savior Jesus as he promised; |
| 13:24 |
Beforebefore his coming John had preachedalready proclaimed a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel |
| 13:25 |
And as John was finishing his coursework he said What do you suppose that I am I am not he No but after me one is coming theafter sandalsme; of whose feet I am not worthy to untie the thong of the sandals on his feet |
| 13:26 |
BrethrenMy sonsbrothers you descendants of theAbrahams family of Abraham and thoseothers amongwho you that fear God to us has been sent the message of this salvation has been sent |
| 13:27 |
ForBecause thosethe whoresidents liveof in Jerusalem and their rulersleaders because they did not recognize him noror understand the utteranceswords of the prophets whichthat are read every sabbath they fulfilled thesethose words by condemning him |
| 13:28 |
ThoughEven though they couldfound chargeno himcause withfor nothinga deservingsentence of death yet they asked Pilate to have him killed |
| 13:29 |
AndWhen when they had fulfilledcarried allout everything that was written ofabout him they took him down from the tree and laid him in a tomb |
| 13:31 |
and for many days he appeared to those who came up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem whoand they are now his witnesses to the people |
| 13:32 |
And we bring you the good news that what God promised to theour fathersancestors |
| 13:33 |
this he has fulfilled tofor us their children by raising Jesus; as also it is written in the second psalm ThouYou artare my Son; today I have begotten theeyou |
| 13:34 |
AndAs asto forhis theraising fact that he raised him from the dead no more to return to corruption he spokehas spoken in this way I will give you the holy andpromises suremade blessingsto of David |
| 13:35 |
Therefore he sayshas also said in another psalm ThouYou wiltwill not let thyyour Holy One seeexperience corruption |
| 13:36 |
For David after he had served the counselpurpose of God in his own generation felldied asleep and was laid withbeside his fathersancestors and sawexperienced corruption; |
| 13:37 |
but he whom God raised up sawexperienced no corruption |
| 13:38 |
Let it be known to you therefore brethrenmy brothers that through this man forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you; |
| 13:39 |
and by himthis everyJesus oneeveryone thatwho believes is freedset free from everythingall those sins from which you could not be freed by the law of Moses |
| 13:40 |
Beware therefore lestthat therewhat comethe uponprophets yousaid whatdoes isnot saidhappen into the prophetsyou: |
| 13:41 |
BeholdLook you scoffers andBe wonderamazed and perish; for Iin doyour adays deedI inam yourdoing daysa work a deedwork that you will never believe even if onesomeone declarestells ityou to you |
| 13:42 |
As theyPaul wentand Barnabas were going out the people beggedurged thatthem theseto thingsspeak mightabout bethese toldthings themagain the next sabbath |
| 13:43 |
AndWhen when the meeting of the synagogue broke up many Jews and devout converts to Judaism followed Paul and Barnabas who spoke to them and urged them to continue in the grace of God |
| 13:44 |
The next sabbath almost the whole city gathered together to hear the word of Godthe Lord |
| 13:45 |
But when the Jews saw the multitudescrowds they were filled with jealousy; and blaspheming they contradicted what was spoken by Paul and reviled him |
| 13:46 |
AndThen both Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly saying It was necessary that the word of God should be spoken first to you Since you thrustreject it from you and judge yourselves to be unworthy of eternal life behold we turnare now turning to the Gentiles |
| 13:47 |
For so the Lord has commanded us saying I have set you to be a light for the Gentiles so that you may bring salvation to the uttermostends parts of the earth |
| 13:48 |
AndWhen when the Gentiles heard this they were glad and glorifiedpraised the word of Godthe Lord; and as many as werehad ordainedbeen todestined for eternal life believedbecame believers |
| 13:49 |
AndThus the word of the Lord spread throughout all the region |
| 13:50 |
But the Jews incited the devout women of high standing and the leading men of the city and stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas and drove them out of their districtregion |
| 13:51 |
ButSo they shook off the dust fromoff their feet in protest against them and went to Ico′niumIconium |
| 14:1 |
NowThe atsame Ico′niumthing theyoccurred enteredin togetherIconium where Paul and Barnabas went into the Jewish synagogue and so spoke in such a way that a great companynumber believedof both of Jews and of Greeks became believers |
| 14:2 |
But the unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles and poisoned their minds against the brethrenbrothers |
| 14:3 |
So they remained for a long time speaking boldly for the Lord who boretestified witness to the word of his grace by granting signs and wonders to be done bythrough theirthem hands |
| 14:4 |
But the peopleresidents of the city were divided; some sided with the Jews and some with the apostles |
| 14:5 |
WhenAnd when an attempt was made by both Gentiles and Jews with their rulers to molestmistreat them and to stone them |
| 14:6 |
theythe apostles learned of it and fled to Lystra and Derbe cities of Lycao′niaLycaonia and to the surrounding country; |
| 14:7 |
and there they preachedcontinued proclaiming the gospelgood news |
| 14:8 |
NowIn at Lystra there was a man sitting who could not use his feet; heand washad anever cripplewalked fromfor birthhe who had neverbeen walkedcrippled from birth |
| 14:9 |
He listened to Paul as he was speaking; andAnd Paul looking intently at him intently and seeing that he had faith to be madehealed well |
| 14:10 |
said in a loud voice Stand upright on your feet And hethe man sprang up and walkedbegan to walk |
| 14:11 |
AndWhen when the crowds saw what Paul had done they liftedshouted upin theirthe voicesLycaonian sayinglanguage in Lycao′nian The gods have come down to us in thehuman likenessform of men |
| 14:12 |
Barnabas they called Zeus and Paul they called Hermes because he was the chief speaker they called Hermes |
| 14:13 |
AndThe the priest of Zeus whose temple was injust frontoutside of the city brought oxen and garlands to the gates; he and the crowds wanted to offer sacrifice with the people |
| 14:14 |
ButWhen when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard of it they tore their garmentsclothes and rushed out amonginto the multitudecrowd cryingshouting |
| 14:15 |
MenFriends why are you doing this We also are menmortals ofjust like nature with you and we bring you good news that you should turn from these vainworthless things to athe living God who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and all that is in them |
| 14:16 |
In past generations he allowed all the nations to walkfollow in their own ways; |
| 14:17 |
yet he didhas not leaveleft himself without a witness forin hedoing did good—giving andyou gaverains you from heaven rains and fruitful seasons satisfyingand yourfilling heartsyou with food and gladnessyour hearts with joy |
| 14:18 |
WithEven with these words they scarcely restrained the peoplecrowds from offering sacrifice to them |
| 14:19 |
But Jews came there from Antioch and Ico′nium;Iconium and havingwon persuadedover the peoplecrowds Then they stoned Paul and dragged him out of the city supposing that he was dead |
| 14:20 |
But when the disciples gatheredsurrounded about him he rosegot up and enteredwent into the city; andThe on the next day he went on with Barnabas to Derbe |
| 14:21 |
WhenAfter they had preachedproclaimed the gospelgood news to that city and had made many disciples they returned to Lystra andthen on to Ico′niumIconium and to Antioch |
| 14:22 |
strengtheningThere they strengthened the souls of the disciples exhortingand encouraged them to continue in the faith and saying thatIt is through many tribulationspersecutions that we must enter the kingdom of God |
| 14:23 |
And whenafter they had appointed elders for them in everyeach church with prayer and fasting they committedentrusted them to the Lord in whom they believedhad come to believe |
| 14:24 |
Then they passed through Pisid′iaPisidia and came to Pamphyl′iaPamphylia |
| 14:25 |
AndWhen when they had spoken the word in Perga they went down to Attali′a;Attalia |
| 14:26 |
andFrom from there they sailed back to Antioch where they had been commended to the grace of God for the work whichthat they had fulfilledcompleted |
| 14:27 |
AndWhen when they arrived they gatheredcalled the church together and declaredrelated all that God had done with them and how he had opened a door of faith tofor the Gentiles |
| 14:28 |
And they remainedstayed nothere little time with the disciples for some time |
| 15:1 |
ButThen somecertain menindividuals came down from Judea and were teaching the brethrenbrothers Unless you are circumcised according to the custom of Moses you cannot be saved |
| 15:2 |
And whenafter Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and debate with them Paul and Barnabas and some of the others were appointed to go up to Jerusalem to discuss this question with the apostles and the elders about this question |
| 15:3 |
So beingthey were sent on their way by the church and as they passed through both Phoeni′ciaPhoenicia and Samar′iaSamaria reportingthey reported the conversion of the Gentiles and theybrought gave great joy to all the brethrenbelievers |
| 15:4 |
When they came to Jerusalem they were welcomed by the church and the apostles and the elders and they declaredreported all that God had done with them |
| 15:5 |
But some believers who belonged to the partysect of the Pharisees rosestood up and said It is necessary for them to circumcisebe themcircumcised and toordered charge them to keep the law of Moses |
| 15:6 |
The apostles and the elders weremet gathered together to consider this matter |
| 15:7 |
AndAfter after there had been much debate Peter rosestood up and said to them BrethrenMy brothers you know that in the early days God made a choice among you that byI myshould mouthbe the one through whom the Gentiles shouldwould hear the wordmessage of the gospelgood news and believebecome believers |
| 15:8 |
And God who knows the human heart boretestified witness to them by giving them the Holy Spirit just as he did to us; |
| 15:9 |
and in cleansing their hearts by faith he has made no distinction between usthem and themus but cleansed their hearts by faith |
| 15:10 |
Now therefore why doare you makeputting trialGod ofto Godthe test by puttingplacing aon yoke upon the neck of the disciples whicha yoke that neither our fathersancestors nor we have been able to bear |
| 15:11 |
ButOn the contrary we believe that we shallwill be saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus just as they will |
| 15:12 |
AndThe allwhole the assembly kept silence; and they listened to Barnabas and Paul as they relatedtold whatof all the signs and wonders that God had done through them among the Gentiles |
| 15:13 |
After they finished speaking James replied BrethrenMy brothers listen to me |
| 15:14 |
Simeon has related how God first visitedlooked favorably on the Gentiles to take outfrom ofamong them a people for his name |
| 15:15 |
AndThis agrees with this the words of the prophets agree as it is written |
| 15:16 |
After this I will return and I will rebuild the dwelling of David which has fallen; from its ruins I will rebuild itsit ruins and I will set it up |
| 15:17 |
so that theall restother ofpeoples men may seek the Lord— andeven all the Gentiles whoover arewhom my name has been called byThus mysays namethe Lord who has been making these things |
| 15:18 |
says the Lord who has made these things known from oflong oldago |
| 15:19 |
Therefore myI judgmenthave isreached the decision that we should not trouble those of the Gentiles who turnare turning to God |
| 15:20 |
but we should write to them to abstain only from thethings pollutionspolluted ofby idols and from unchastityfornication and from whatwhatever ishas been strangled and from blood |
| 15:21 |
For fromin earlyevery city for generations past Moses has had in every city those who preachproclaim him for he ishas been read aloud every sabbath in the synagogues |
| 15:22 |
Then it seemed good to the apostles and the elders with the consent of the whole church decided to choose men from among themtheir members and to send them to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas They sent Judas called Barsab′basBarsabbas and Silas leadingleaders men among the brethrenbrothers |
| 15:23 |
with the following letter: The brethrenbrothers both the apostles and the elders to the brethrenbelievers who are of theGentile Gentilesorigin in Antioch and Syria and Cili′ciaCilicia greetinggreetings |
| 15:24 |
Since we have heard that somecertain persons who have gone out from us havethough troubledwith youno withinstructions wordsfrom unsettlingus yourhave mindssaid althoughthings weto gavedisturb themyou noand instructionshave unsettled your minds |
| 15:25 |
itwe hashave seemeddecided goodunanimously to us having come to one accord to choose menrepresentatives and send them to you along with our beloved Barnabas and Paul |
| 15:26 |
men who have risked their lives for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ |
| 15:28 |
For it has seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us to layimpose uponon you no greaterfurther burden than these necessary thingsessentials: |
| 15:29 |
that you abstain from what has been sacrificed to idols and from blood and from what is strangled and from unchastityfornication If you keep yourselves from these you will do well Farewell |
| 15:30 |
So when they were sent off theyand went down to Antioch; andWhen havingthey gathered the congregation together they delivered the letter |
| 15:31 |
AndWhen whenits theymembers read it they rejoiced at the exhortation |
| 15:32 |
And Judas and Silas who were themselves prophets exhortedsaid themuch brethrento withencourage manyand wordsstrengthen andthe strengthenedbelievers them |
| 15:33 |
AndAfter after they had spentbeen there for some time they were sent off in peace by the brethrenbelievers to those who had sent them |
| 15:35 |
But Paul and Barnabas remained in Antioch teachingand there with many others they taught and preachingproclaimed the word of the Lord with many others also |
| 15:36 |
AndAfter after some days Paul said to Barnabas Come let us return and visit the brethrenbelievers in every city where we proclaimed the word of the Lord and see how they are doing |
| 15:37 |
And Barnabas wanted to take with them John called Mark |
| 15:38 |
But Paul thoughtdecided best not to take with them one who had withdrawndeserted from them in Pamphyl′iaPamphylia and had not goneaccompanied with them toin the work |
| 15:39 |
AndThe theredisagreement arosebecame aso sharp contention so that they separatedparted from each othercompany; Barnabas took Mark with him and sailed away to Cyprus |
| 15:40 |
butBut Paul chose Silas and departedset beingout commendedthe bybelievers thecommending brethrenhim to the grace of the Lord |
| 15:41 |
AndHe he went through Syria and Cili′ciaCilicia strengthening the churches |
| 16:1 |
AndPaul hewent cameon also to Derbe and to Lystra Awhere disciplethere was therea disciple named Timothy the son of a Jewish woman who was a believer; but his father was a Greek |
| 16:2 |
He was well spoken of by the brethrenbelievers atin Lystra and Ico′niumIconium |
| 16:3 |
Paul wanted Timothy to accompany him; and he took him and circumcisedhad him circumcised because of the Jews thatwho were in those places for they all knew that his father was a Greek |
| 16:4 |
As they went onfrom theirtown wayto throughtown the cities they delivered to them for observance the decisions whichthat had been reached by the apostles and elders who were atin Jerusalem |
| 16:5 |
So the churches were strengthened in the faith and they increased in numbers daily |
| 16:6 |
AndThey they went through the region of Phry′giaPhrygia and Galatia having been forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia |
| 16:7 |
AndWhen when they had come opposite My′siaMysia they attempted to go into Bithyn′iaBithynia but the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them; |
| 16:8 |
so passing by My′siaMysia they went down to Tro′asTroas |
| 16:9 |
AndDuring athe visionnight appeared to Paul inhad thea nightvision: there stood a man of Macedo′niaMacedonia waspleading standingwith beseeching him and saying Come over to Macedo′niaMacedonia and help us |
| 16:10 |
AndWhen when he had seen the vision we immediately wetried sought to gocross onover intoto Macedo′niaMacedonia concludingbeing convinced that God had called us to preachproclaim the gospelgood news to them |
| 16:11 |
SettingWe set sail therefore from Tro′asTroas weand madetook a directstraight voyagecourse to Sam′othraceSamothrace and the following day to NeNeapolis ap′olis |
| 16:12 |
and from there to Philippi which is thea leading city of the district of Macedo′niaMacedonia and a Roman colony We remained in this city for some days; |
| 16:13 |
andOn on the sabbath day we went outside the gate toby the riversideriver where we supposed there was a place of prayer; and we sat down and spoke to the women who had comegathered togetherthere |
| 16:14 |
OneA whocertain heardwoman usnamed wasLydia a womanworshiper namedof LydiaGod fromwas thelistening cityto ofus; Thyati′rashe awas sellerfrom ofthe purplecity goodsof whoThyatira wasand a worshiperdealer ofin Godpurple cloth The Lord opened her heart to givelisten heedeagerly to what was said by Paul |
| 16:15 |
AndWhen when she wasand baptized with her household were baptized she besoughturged us saying If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord come toand mystay houseat andmy stayhome And she prevailed upon us |
| 16:16 |
AsOne day as we were going to the place of prayer we were met by a slave girl who had a spirit of divination and brought her owners mucha gaingreat deal of money by soothsayingfortune telling |
| 16:17 |
SheWhile she followed Paul and us cryingshe would cry out These men are servantsslaves of the Most High God who proclaim to you thea way of salvation |
| 16:18 |
AndShe thiskept shedoing didthis for many days But Paul wasvery much annoyed and turned and said to the spirit I chargeorder you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her And it came out that very hour |
| 16:19 |
But when her owners saw that their hope of gainmaking money was gone they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketmarketplace place before the rulers;authorities |
| 16:20 |
andWhen when they had brought them tobefore the magistrates they said These men are Jewsdisturbing andour city; they are disturbingJews our city |
| 16:21 |
Theyand advocateare advocating customs whichthat itare is not lawful for us as Romans to acceptadopt or practiceobserve |
| 16:22 |
The crowd joined in attacking them; and the magistrates torehad thethem garmentsstripped offof themtheir clothing and gaveordered ordersthem to beatbe thembeaten with rods |
| 16:23 |
AndAfter when they had inflictedgiven manythem blowsa uponsevere themflogging they threw them into prison chargingand ordered the jailer to keep them safelysecurely |
| 16:24 |
HavingFollowing receivedthese thisinstructions charge he put them intoin the innerinnermost prisoncell and fastened their feet in the stocks |
| 16:25 |
ButAbout about midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God and the prisoners were listening to them |
| 16:26 |
andSuddenly suddenly there was aan great earthquake so violent that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and everyeveryones oneschains fetters were unfastened |
| 16:27 |
When the jailer woke up and saw that the prison doors werewide open he drew his sword and was about to kill himself supposingsince he supposed that the prisoners had escaped |
| 16:28 |
But Paul criedshouted within a loud voice Do not harm yourself for we are all here |
| 16:29 |
AndThe hejailer called for lights and rushedrushing in and trembling with fear he fell down trembling before Paul and Silas |
| 16:30 |
andThen he brought them outoutside and said MenSirs what must I do to be saved |
| 16:31 |
AndThey theyanswered said Believe inon the Lord Jesus and you will be saved you and your household |
| 16:32 |
AndThey they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all thatwho were in his house |
| 16:33 |
AndAt he took them the same hour of the night he took them and washed their wounds; andthen he wasand baptizedhis atentire oncefamily withwere allbaptized hiswithout familydelay |
| 16:34 |
ThenHe he brought them up into histhe house and set food before them; and he rejoicedand withhis allentire his household rejoiced that he had believedbecome a believer in God |
| 16:35 |
ButWhen whenmorning itcame was day the magistrates sent the police saying Let those men go |
| 16:36 |
And the jailer reported the wordsmessage to Paul saying The magistrates have sent word to let you go; now therefore come out now and go in peace |
| 16:37 |
But Paul saidreplied to them They have beaten us publiclyin public uncondemned men who are Roman citizens and have thrown us into prison; and donow are they nowgoing castto discharge us outin secretlysecret NoCertainly letnot Let them come themselves and take us out themselves |
| 16:40 |
SoAfter theyleaving wentthe outprison ofthey thewent prisonto andLydias visited Lydiahome; and when they had seen and encouraged the brethrenbrothers theyand exhortedsisters themthere andthey departed |
| 17:1 |
NowAfter whenPaul theyand Silas had passed through Amphip′olisAmphipolis and Apollo′niaApollonia they came to Thessaloni′caThessalonica where there was a synagogue of the Jews |
| 17:2 |
And Paul went in as was his custom and foron three weekssabbath hedays argued with them from the scriptures |
| 17:3 |
explaining and proving that it was necessary for the ChristMessiah to suffer and to rise from the dead and saying This is the Messiah Jesus whom I proclaimam proclaiming to you is the Christ |
| 17:4 |
AndSome some of them were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas; as did a great many of the devout Greeks and not a few of the leading women |
| 17:5 |
But the Jews werebecame jealous and takingwith the help of some wickedruffians fellowsin of the rabblemarketplaces they gatheredformed a crowdmob and set the city in an uproar andWhile attackedthey thewere housesearching offor JasonPaul seekingand Silas to bring them out to the peopleassembly they attacked Jasons house |
| 17:6 |
AndWhen when they could not find them they dragged Jason and some ofbelievers the brethren before the city authorities cryingshouting These menpeople who have turnedbeen turning the world upside down have come here also |
| 17:7 |
and Jason has receivedentertained them; andas theyguests They are all acting againstcontrary to the decrees of Caesarthe emperor saying that there is another king named Jesus |
| 17:8 |
AndThe the people and the city authoritiesofficials were disturbed when they heard this |
| 17:9 |
Andand whenafter they had taken securitybail from Jason and the restothers they let them go |
| 17:10 |
TheThat brethrenvery immediatelynight the believers sent Paul and Silas awayoff by night to Beroe′aBeroea; and when they arrived they went intoto the Jewish synagogue |
| 17:11 |
NowThese these Jews were more noblereceptive than those in Thessaloni′caThessalonica for they receivedwelcomed the wordmessage withvery alleagerly eagernessand examiningexamined the scriptures dailyevery day to see ifwhether these things were so |
| 17:12 |
Many of them therefore believed withincluding not a few Greek women and men of high standing as well as men |
| 17:13 |
But when the Jews of Thessaloni′caThessalonica learned that the word of God washad been proclaimed by Paul atin Beroe′aBeroea alsoas well they came there too stirringto stir up and incitingincite the crowds |
| 17:14 |
Then the brethrenbelievers immediately sent Paul offaway on his way to the seacoast but Silas and Timothy remained therebehind |
| 17:15 |
Those who conducted Paul brought him as far as Athens; and after receiving ainstructions commandto forhave Silas and Timothy tojoin come to him as soon as possible they departedleft him |
| 17:16 |
NowWhile while Paul was waiting for them atin Athens hishe spirit was provokeddeeply withindistressed himto assee he saw that the city was full of idols |
| 17:17 |
So he argued in the synagogue with the Jews and the devout persons and also in the marketmarketplace place every day with those who chancedhappened to be there |
| 17:18 |
SomeAlso alsosome of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers metdebated with him AndSome some said What woulddoes this babbler want to say Others said He seems to be a preacherproclaimer of foreign divinities— This was because he preachedwas telling the good news about Jesus and the resurrection |
| 17:19 |
AndSo they took hold of him and brought him to the AreAreopagus op′agusand sayingasked him May we know what this new teaching is whichthat you presentare presenting |
| 17:20 |
ForIt yousounds bringrather some strange things to ourus ears;so we wishwould like to know therefore what theseit thingsmeans mean |
| 17:21 |
Now all the Athenians and the foreigners wholiving lived there spentwould spend their time in nothing exceptbut telling or hearing something new |
| 17:22 |
SoThen Paul standingstood in thefront middle of the AreAreopagus op′agusand said: MenAthenians of Athens I perceivesee thathow inextremely everyreligious way you are veryin religiousevery way |
| 17:23 |
For as I passedwent alongthrough the city and observedlooked carefully at the objects of your worship I found alsoamong them an altar with thisthe inscription To an unknown god What therefore you worship as unknown this I proclaim to you |
| 17:24 |
The God who made the world and everything in it beinghe who is Lord of heaven and earth does not live in shrines made by manhuman hands |
| 17:25 |
nor is he served by human hands as though he needed anything since he himself gives to all menmortals life and breath and everythingall things |
| 17:26 |
AndFrom one ancestor he made fromall onenations everyto nationinhabit ofthe menwhole toearth liveand onhe allallotted the facetimes of thetheir earthexistence having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of theirthe habitationplaces where they would live |
| 17:27 |
so that they shouldwould seeksearch for God inand theperhaps hopegrope thatfor they might feel after him and find him—though Yetindeed he is not far from each one of us |
| 17:28 |
forFor In him we live and move and have our being; as even some of your own poets have said For we too are indeed his offspring |
| 17:29 |
BeingSince thenwe are Gods offspring we ought not to think that the Deitydeity is like gold or silver or stone aan representationimage formed by the art and imagination of manmortals |
| 17:30 |
TheWhile God has overlooked the times of human ignorance God overlooked but now he commands all menpeople everywhere to repent |
| 17:31 |
because he has fixed a day on which he will judgehave the world judged in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed and of this he has given assurance to all men by raising him from the dead |
| 17:32 |
NowWhen when they heard of the resurrection of the dead some mockedscoffed; but others said We will hear you again about this |
| 17:33 |
SoAt Paulthat wentpoint outPaul fromleft among them |
| 17:34 |
But some menof them joined him and believedbecame amongbelievers themincluding Dionys′iusDionysius the AreAreopagite op′agite and a woman named Dam′arisDamaris and others with them |
| 18:1 |
After this hePaul left Athens and went to Corinth |
| 18:2 |
AndThere he found a Jew named Aq′uilaAquila a native of Pontus latelywho had recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla because Claudius had commandedordered all the Jews to leave Rome AndPaul he went to see them; |
| 18:3 |
and because he was of the same trade he stayed with them and they worked for together—by trade they were tentmakers |
| 18:4 |
AndEvery sabbath he arguedwould argue in the synagogue everyand sabbathwould andtry persuadedto convince Jews and Greeks |
| 18:5 |
When Silas and Timothy arrived from Macedo′niaMacedonia Paul was occupied with preachingproclaiming the word testifying to the Jews that the ChristMessiah was Jesus |
| 18:6 |
AndWhen when they opposed and reviled him in protest he shook outthe dust from his garmentsclothes and said to them Your blood be uponon your own heads I am innocent From now on I will go to the Gentiles |
| 18:7 |
AndThen he left therethe synagogue and went to the house of a man named Titius Justus a worshiper of God; his house was next door to the synagogue |
| 18:8 |
Crispus the rulerofficial of the synagogue believedbecame a believer in the Lord together with all his household; and many of the Corinthians hearingwho heard Paul believedbecame believers and were baptized |
| 18:9 |
AndOne night the Lord said to Paul one night in a vision Do not be afraid but speak and do not be silent; |
| 18:10 |
for I am with you and no manone shallwill attacklay a hand on you to harm you; for Ithere haveare many people in this city who are my people |
| 18:11 |
AndHe he stayed there a year and six months teaching the word of God among them |
| 18:12 |
But when Gallio was proconsul of Acha′iaAchaia the Jews made a united attack uponon Paul and brought him before the tribunal |
| 18:13 |
sayingThey said This man is persuading menpeople to worship God in ways that are contrary to the law |
| 18:14 |
ButJust whenas Paul was about to openspeak his mouth Gallio said to the Jews If it were a matter of wrongdoingcrime or viciousserious crimevillainy I shouldwould havebe reasonjustified toin bearaccepting withthe complaint of you O Jews; |
| 18:15 |
but since it is a matter of questions about words and names and your own law see to it yourselves; I refusedo not wish to be a judge of these thingsmatters |
| 18:16 |
And he drovedismissed them from the tribunal |
| 18:17 |
AndThen they all of them seized Sos′thenesSosthenes the rulerofficial of the synagogue and beat him in front of the tribunal But Gallio paid no attention to thisany of these things |
| 18:18 |
After thisstaying Paulthere stayedfor manya daysconsiderable longertime andPaul thensaid tookfarewell leaveto of the brethrenbelievers and sailed for Syria andaccompanied withby him Priscilla and Aq′uilaAquila At Cen′chreCenchreae ae he cuthad his hair cut for he hadwas under a vow |
| 18:19 |
AndWhen they camereached to Ephesus and he left them there; but first he himself went into the synagogue and arguedhad a discussion with the Jews |
| 18:20 |
When they asked him to stay for a longer period he declined; |
| 18:21 |
but on taking leave of them he said I will return to you if God wills andThen he set sail from Ephesus |
| 18:22 |
When he had landed at Caesare′aCaesarea he went up to Jerusalem and greeted the church and then went down to Antioch |
| 18:23 |
After spending some time there he departed and went from place to place through the region of Galatia and Phryg′iaPhrygia strengthening all the disciples |
| 18:24 |
Now there came to Ephesus a Jew named Apol′losApollos a native of Alexandria came to Ephesus He was an eloquent man well versed in the scriptures |
| 18:25 |
He had been instructed in the wayWay of the Lord; and beinghe ferventspoke inwith spiritburning heenthusiasm spoke and taught accurately the things concerning Jesus though he knew only the baptism of John |
| 18:26 |
He began to speak boldly in the synagogue; but when Priscilla and Aq′uilaAquila heard him they took him aside and expoundedexplained to him the wayWay of God to him more accurately |
| 18:27 |
And when he wished to cross over to Acha′iaAchaia the brethrenbelievers encouraged him and wrote to the disciples to receivewelcome him WhenOn hehis arrivedarrival he greatly helped those who through grace had believedbecome believers |
| 18:28 |
for he powerfully confutedrefuted the Jews in public showing by the scriptures that the ChristMessiah wasis Jesus |
| 19:1 |
While Apol′losApollos was atin Corinth Paul passed through the upperinterior countryregions and came to Ephesus Therewhere he found some disciples |
| 19:2 |
AndHe he said to them Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believedbecame Andbelievers theyThey saidreplied No we have nevernot even heard that there is a Holy Spirit |
| 19:3 |
AndThen he said Into what then were you baptized They saidanswered Into Johns baptism |
| 19:4 |
And Paul said John baptized with the baptism of repentance telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him that is in Jesus |
| 19:6 |
AndWhen when Paul had laid his hands uponon them the Holy Spirit came onupon them; and they spoke within tongues and prophesied— |
| 19:7 |
Therealtogether there were about twelve of them in all |
| 19:8 |
AndHe he entered the synagogue and for three months spoke out boldly arguing and pleadingargued persuasively about the kingdom of God; |
| 19:9 |
butWhen when some werestubbornly stubbornrefused to believe and disbelievedspoke speaking evil of the Way before the congregation he withdrewleft from them taking the disciples with him and argued daily in the lecture hall of Tyran′nusTyrannus |
| 19:10 |
This continued for two years so that all the residents of Asia both Jews and Greeks heard the word of the Lord both Jews and Greeks |
| 19:11 |
And God did extraordinary miracles bythrough the hands of Paul |
| 19:12 |
so that when the handkerchiefs or aprons werethat carriedhad awaytouched from his bodyskin were brought to the sick andtheir diseases left them and the evil spirits came out of them |
| 19:13 |
Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists undertooktried to pronounceuse the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits saying I adjure you by the Jesus whom Paul preachesproclaims |
| 19:15 |
But the evil spirit answeredsaid to them in reply Jesus I know and Paul I know; but who are you |
| 19:16 |
AndThen the man inwith whom the evil spirit was leaped on them mastered them all ofand themso and overpowered them so that they fled out of thatthe house naked and wounded |
| 19:17 |
AndWhen this became known to all residents of Ephesus both Jews and Greeks; andeveryone fearwas fell upon them allawestruck; and the name of the Lord Jesus was extolledpraised |
| 19:18 |
ManyAlso alsomany of those who werebecame now believers cameconfessed confessing and divulgingdisclosed their practices |
| 19:19 |
AndA a number of those who practiced magic artscollected brought their books together and burned them inpublicly; when the sightvalue of all;these andbooks theywas countedcalculated theit valuewas of them and found itto camecome to fifty thousand piecessilver ofcoins silver |
| 19:20 |
So the word of the Lord grew mightily and prevailed mightily |
| 19:21 |
Now after these eventsthings had been accomplished Paul resolved in the Spirit to passgo through Macedo′niaMacedonia and Acha′iaAchaia and then to go on to Jerusalem sayingHe said After I have beengone there I must also see Rome |
| 19:22 |
AndSo havinghe sent into Macedo′nia two of his helpers Timothy and Eras′tusErastus to Macedonia while he himself stayed infor Asiasome fortime alonger whilein Asia |
| 19:23 |
About that time there arose no little stirdisturbance broke out concerning the Way |
| 19:24 |
ForA a man named Deme′triusDemetrius a silversmith who made silver shrines of Ar′temisArtemis brought no little business to the craftsmenartisans |
| 19:25 |
These he gathered together with the workmenworkers of likethe occupationsame trade and said Men you know that from this business we haveget our wealth from this business |
| 19:26 |
AndYou youalso see and hear that not only atin Ephesus but in almost throughoutthe allwhole of Asia this Paul has persuaded and turneddrawn away a considerable companynumber of people by saying that gods made with hands are not gods |
| 19:27 |
And there is danger not only that this trade of ours may come into disrepute but also that the temple of the great goddess Ar′temisArtemis maywill countbe forscorned nothing and that she maywill even be deposeddeprived fromof her magnificencemajesty shethat whombrought all Asia and the world to worship her |
| 19:28 |
When they heard this they were enraged and criedshouted out Great is Ar′temisArtemis of the Ephesians |
| 19:29 |
SoThe the city was filled with the confusion; and theypeople rushed together intoto the theater dragging with them Ga′iusGaius and Aristar′chusAristarchus Macedo′niansMacedonians who were Pauls travel companions in travel |
| 19:30 |
Paul wished to go ininto among the crowd but the disciples would not let him; |
| 19:31 |
even some officials of the A′siprovince archsof alsoAsia who were friendsfriendly ofto hishim sent to him anda beggedmessage urging him not to venture into the theater |
| 19:32 |
NowMeanwhile some criedwere shouting one thing some another; for the assembly was in confusion and most of them did not know why they had come together |
| 19:33 |
Some of the crowd promptedgave instructions to Alexander whom the Jews had putpushed forward And Alexander motioned withfor hissilence handand wishingtried to make a defense tobefore the people |
| 19:34 |
But when they recognized that he was a Jew for about two hours they all withof onethem voiceshouted criedin outunison Great is Ar′temisArtemis of the Ephesians |
| 19:35 |
AndBut when the town clerk had quieted the crowd he said MenCitizens of Ephesus whatwho man is there whothat does not know that the city of the Ephesians is the temple keeper of the great Ar′temisArtemis and of the sacredstatue stone that fell from theheaven sky |
| 19:36 |
SeeingSince then that these things cannot be contradicteddenied you ought to be quiet and do nothing rash |
| 19:37 |
ForYou you have brought these men here who are neither sacrilegioustemple robbers nor blasphemers of our goddess |
| 19:38 |
If therefore Deme′triusDemetrius and the craftsmenartisans with him have a complaint against anyanyone one the courts are open and there are proconsuls; let them bring charges there against one another |
| 19:39 |
ButIf ifthere youis seek anything further you want to know it shallmust be settled in the regular assembly |
| 19:40 |
For we are in danger of being charged with rioting today since there beingis no cause that we can give to justify this commotion |
| 19:41 |
AndWhen when he had said this he dismissed the assembly |
| 20:1 |
After the uproar had ceased Paul sent for the disciples; and havingafter exhortedencouraging them tookand leavesaying offarewell themhe andleft departed for Macedo′niaMacedonia |
| 20:2 |
When he had gone through thesethose partsregions and had given themthe believers much encouragement he came to Greece |
| 20:3 |
Therewhere he spentstayed for three months andHe was about to set sail for Syria when a plot was made against him by the Jews asand heso was about to set sail for Syria he determineddecided to return through Macedo′niaMacedonia |
| 20:4 |
Sop′aterHe ofwas Beroe′aaccompanied theby Sopater son of Pyrrhus accompaniedfrom him;Beroea andby ofAristarchus theand Thessalo′niansSecundus Aristar′chusfrom andThessalonica Secun′dus;by andGaius Ga′iusfrom of Derbe and by Timothy; andas thewell Asiansas Tych′icusby Tychicus and Troph′imusTrophimus from Asia |
| 20:5 |
TheseThey went onahead and were waiting for us atin Tro′asTroas; |
| 20:6 |
but we sailed away from Philippi after the days of Unleavened Bread and in five days we camejoined to them atin Tro′asTroas where we stayed for seven days |
| 20:7 |
On the first day of the week when we weremet gathered together to break bread Paul talkedwas holding a discussion with them; intendingsince he intended to departleave on the morrow;next andday he prolongedcontinued hisspeaking speech until midnight |
| 20:8 |
There were many lightslamps in the upperroom chamberupstairs where we were gatheredmeeting |
| 20:9 |
AndA a young man named Eu′tychusEutychus who was sitting in the window Hebegan sankto sink off into a deep sleep aswhile Paul talked still longer; andOvercome being overcome by sleep he fell downto from the thirdground storythree floors below and was takenpicked up dead |
| 20:10 |
But Paul went down and bentbending over him andtook embracing him in his arms and said Do not be alarmed for his life is in him |
| 20:11 |
AndThen when Paul hadwent goneupstairs up and after he had broken bread and eaten he conversedcontinued to converse with them a long while until daybreakdawn; andthen sohe departedleft |
| 20:12 |
AndMeanwhile they tookhad taken the ladboy away alive and were not a little comforted |
| 20:13 |
ButWe goingwent ahead to the ship weand set sail for Assos intending to take Paul aboardon board there; for so he had arrangedmade this arrangement intending himself to go by land himself |
| 20:14 |
AndWhen when he met us atin Assos we took him on board and camewent to Mityle′neMitylene |
| 20:15 |
AndWe sailingsailed from there weand cameon the following day we arrived opposite Chi′os;Chios theThe next day we touched at Samos; and the day after that we came to Mile′tusMiletus |
| 20:16 |
For Paul had decided to sail past Ephesus so that he might not have to spend time in Asia; for he was hasteningeager to be atin Jerusalem if possible on the day of Pentecost |
| 20:17 |
AndFrom fromMiletus Mile′tus he sent a message to Ephesus andasking called to him the elders of the church to meet him |
| 20:18 |
AndWhen when they came to him he said to them: You yourselves know how I lived among you all the entire time from the first day that I set foot in Asia |
| 20:19 |
serving the Lord with all humility and with tears andenduring withthe trials whichthat befellcame to me through the plots of the Jews; |
| 20:20 |
how I did not shrink from declaringdoing toanything youhelpful anythingproclaiming thatthe wasmessage profitableto you and teaching you inpublicly public and from house to house |
| 20:21 |
testifyingas bothI testified to both Jews and to Greeks ofabout repentance totoward God and of faith intoward our Lord Jesus Christ |
| 20:22 |
And now beholdas a captive to the Spirit I am goingon my way to Jerusalem bound in the Spirit not knowing what shallwill befallhappen to me there; |
| 20:23 |
except that the Holy Spirit testifies to me in every city that imprisonment and afflictionspersecutions awaitare waiting for me |
| 20:24 |
But I do not accountcount my life of any value nor as precious to myself if only I may accomplishfinish my course and the ministry whichthat I received from the Lord Jesus to testify to the gospelgood news of theGods grace of God |
| 20:25 |
And now behold I know that allnone of you among whom I have gone preachingabout proclaiming the kingdom will ever see my face noagain more |
| 20:26 |
Therefore I testifydeclare to you this day that I am innocentnot ofresponsible for the blood of allany of you |
| 20:27 |
for I did not shrink from declaring to you the whole counselpurpose of God |
| 20:28 |
TakeKeep heedwatch toover yourselves and toover all the flock inof which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers to careshepherd for the church of God whichthat he obtained with the blood of his own Son |
| 20:29 |
I know that after myI departurehave fiercegone savage wolves will come in among you not sparing the flock; |
| 20:30 |
andSome even from among your own selvesgroup will arisecome mendistorting speakingthe perversetruth thingsin order to drawentice away the disciples afterto follow them |
| 20:31 |
Therefore be alert remembering that for three years I did not cease night or day to admonishwarn everyeveryone one with tears |
| 20:32 |
And now I commend you to God and to the wordmessage of his grace whicha message that is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified |
| 20:33 |
I coveted no ones silver or gold or apparelclothing |
| 20:34 |
You know for yourselves know that theseI handsworked ministeredwith to my necessitiesown andhands to thosesupport whomyself wereand withmy mecompanions |
| 20:35 |
In all thingsthis I have showngiven you an example that by sosuch toilingwork onewe must helpsupport the weak remembering the words of the Lord Jesus howfor he himself said It is more blessed to give than to receive |
| 20:36 |
AndWhen when he had spokenfinished thusspeaking he knelt down and prayed with them all and prayed |
| 20:37 |
AndThere theywas much weeping among them all; weptthey and embraced Paul and kissed him |
| 20:38 |
sorrowinggrieving mostespecially of all because of thewhat word he had spokensaid that they shouldwould not see hishim faceagain noThen more And they brought him to the ship |
| 21:1 |
AndWhen when we had parted from them and set sail we came by a straight course to Cos and the next day to Rhodes and from there to Pat′araPatara |
| 21:2 |
AndWhen havingwe found a ship crossingbound tofor Phoeni′ciaPhoenicia we went aboardon board and set sail |
| 21:3 |
WhenWe wecame had come in sight of Cyprus; and leaving it on theour left we sailed to Syria and landed at Tyre; forbecause there the ship was to unload its cargo there |
| 21:4 |
AndWe havinglooked soughtup out the disciples weand stayed there for seven days Through the Spirit they told Paul not to go on to Jerusalem |
| 21:5 |
AndWhen when our days there were ended we departedleft and wentproceeded on our journey; and they all of them with wives and children broughtescorted us on our way till we were outside the city; andThere kneelingwe knelt down on the beach weand prayed and bade one another farewell |
| 21:6 |
and said farewell to one another Then we went on board the ship and they returned home |
| 21:7 |
When we had finished the voyage from Tyre we arrived at Ptolema′isPtolemais; and we greeted the brethrenbelievers and stayed with them for one day |
| 21:8 |
OnThe thenext morrowday we departedleft and came to Caesare′aCaesarea; and we enteredwent into the house of Philip the evangelist who was one of the seven and stayed with him |
| 21:9 |
AndHe he had four unmarried daughters who prophesiedhad the gift of prophecy |
| 21:10 |
While we were staying there for someseveral days a prophet named Ag′abusAgabus came down from Judea |
| 21:11 |
AndHe comingcame to us heand took Pauls girdlebelt and bound his own feet and hands with it and said Thus says the Holy Spirit SoThis shallis the way the Jews atin Jerusalem will bind the man who owns this girdlebelt and deliverwill hand him intoover theto hands of the Gentiles |
| 21:12 |
When we heard this we and the people there beggedurged him not to go up to Jerusalem |
| 21:13 |
Then Paul answered What are you doing weeping and breaking my heart For I am ready not only to be imprisonedbound but even to die atin Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus |
| 21:14 |
AndSince when he would not be persuaded we ceasedremained andsilent saidexcept Theto willsay ofThe theLords Lordwill be done |
| 21:15 |
After these days we madegot ready and wentstarted to go up to Jerusalem |
| 21:16 |
AndSome some of the disciples from Caesare′aCaesarea wentalso withcame usalong bringingand brought us to the house of Mnason of Cyprus an early disciple with whom we shouldwere lodgeto stay |
| 21:17 |
When we hadarrived comein to Jerusalem the brethrenbrothers receivedwelcomed us gladlywarmly |
| 21:18 |
OnThe thenext following day Paul went in with us to visit James; and all the elders were present |
| 21:20 |
AndWhen when they heard it they glorifiedpraised God AndThen they said to him You see brother how many thousands of believers there are among the Jews ofand those who have believed; they are all zealous for the law |
| 21:21 |
andThey they have been told about you that you teach all the Jews wholiving are among the Gentiles to forsake Moses tellingand that you tell them not to circumcise their children or observe the customs |
| 21:23 |
DoSo thereforedo what we tell you We have four men who are under a vow; |
| 21:24 |
takeJoin these men andgo purifythrough yourselfthe alongrite of purification with them and pay theirfor expensesthe soshaving thatof they may shave their heads Thus all will know that there is nothing in what they have been told about you but that you yourself liveobserve inand observanceguard of the law |
| 21:25 |
But as for the Gentiles who have believedbecome believers we have sent a letter with our judgment that they should abstain from what has been sacrificed to idols and from blood and from what is strangled and from unchastityfornication |
| 21:26 |
Then Paul took the men and the next day hehaving purified himself withhe thementered andthe wenttemple intowith thethem templemaking topublic givethe noticecompletion whenof the days of purification wouldwhen bethe fulfilledsacrifice andwould thebe offeringmade presented for everyeach one of them |
| 21:27 |
When the seven days were almost completed the Jews from Asia who had seen him in the temple stirred up all the whole crowd andThey laidseized hands on him |
| 21:28 |
cryingshouting outFellow MenIsraelites of Israel help This is the man who is teaching meneveryone everywhere against theour people andour the law and this place; moreovermore than that he alsohas actually brought Greeks into the temple and he has defiled this holy place |
| 21:29 |
For they had previously seen Troph′imusTrophimus the Ephesian with him in the city and they supposed that Paul had brought him into the temple |
| 21:30 |
Then all the city was aroused and the people ranrushed together; theyThey seized Paul and dragged him out of the temple and atimmediately once the gatesdoors were shut |
| 21:31 |
AndWhile as they were trying to kill him word came to the tribune of the cohort that all Jerusalem was in confusionan uproar |
| 21:32 |
HeImmediately athe once took soldiers and centurions and ran down to them; andWhen when they saw the tribune and the soldiers they stopped beating Paul |
| 21:33 |
Then the tribune came up and arrested him and ordered him to be bound with two chains; Hehe inquired who he was and what he had done |
| 21:35 |
AndWhen whenPaul he came to the steps hethe violence of the mob was actuallyso carriedgreat bythat thehe soldiershad becauseto ofbe thecarried violenceby of the crowd;soldiers |
| 21:36 |
forThe thecrowd mobthat offollowed thekept peopleshouting followed crying Away with him |
| 21:37 |
AsJust as Paul was about to be brought into the barracks he said to the tribune May I say something to you AndThe hetribune saidreplied Do you know Greek |
| 21:38 |
AreThen you are not the Egyptian then who recently stirred up a revolt and led the four thousand menassassins of the Assassins out into the wilderness |
| 21:39 |
Paul replied I am a Jew from Tarsus in Cili′ciaCilicia a citizen of noan meanimportant city; I beg you let me speak to the people |
| 21:40 |
AndWhen when he had given him leavepermission Paul standingstood on the steps and motioned with his hand to the people for silence; and when there was a great hush he spokeaddressed to them in the Hebrew language saying: |
| 22:1 |
BrethrenBrothers and fathers hearlisten to the defense whichthat I now make before you |
| 22:2 |
AndWhen when they heard thathim headdressing addressed them in the Hebrew language they werebecame theeven more quiet AndThen he said: |
| 22:3 |
I am a Jew born atin Tarsus in Cili′ciaCilicia but brought up in this city at the feet of Gama′liGamaliel el educated strictly according to theour strictancestral manner of the law of our fathers being zealous for God just as all of you all are thistoday day |
| 22:4 |
I persecuted this Way up to the deathpoint bindingof anddeath deliveringby tobinding prison both men and women and putting them in prison |
| 22:5 |
as the high priest and the whole council of elders bearcan testify about me witness From them I also received letters to the brethrenbrothers in Damascus and I journeyedwent tothere Damascusin order to takebind those also who were there and to bring them inback bonds to Jerusalem tofor be punishedpunishment |
| 22:6 |
AsWhile I madewas on my journeyway and drewapproaching near to Damascus about noon a great light from heaven suddenly shone about me |
| 22:7 |
And I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me Saul Saul why doare you persecutepersecuting me |
| 22:8 |
And I answered Who are you Lord AndThen he said to me I am Jesus of Nazareth whom you are persecuting |
| 22:10 |
And I saidasked What shallam I to do Lord AndThe the Lord said to me RiseGet up and go intoto Damascus; and there you will be told alleverything that ishas appointedbeen forassigned to you to do |
| 22:11 |
AndSince when I could not see because of the brightness of that light I was led by the hand by those who were with me took my hand and cameled intome to Damascus |
| 22:12 |
AndA onecertain Anani′asAnanias who was a devout man according to the law and well spoken of by all the Jews wholiving lived there |
| 22:13 |
came to me; and standing bybeside me he said to me Brother Saul receiveregain your sight AndIn in that very hour I receivedregained my sight and saw him |
| 22:14 |
AndThen he said The God of our fathersancestors appointedhas chosen you to know his will to see the JustRighteous One and to hear ahis own voice from his mouth; |
| 22:15 |
for you will be ahis witness for him to all menthe world of what you have seen and heard |
| 22:16 |
And now why do you waitdelay RiseGet andup be baptized and washhave away your sins washed away calling on his name |
| 22:17 |
WhenAfter I had returned to Jerusalem and while I was praying in the temple I fell into a trance |
| 22:18 |
and saw himJesus saying to me MakeHurry haste and get quickly out of Jerusalem quickly because they will not accept your testimony about me |
| 22:19 |
And I said Lord they themselves know that in every synagogue I imprisoned and beat those who believed in theeyou |
| 22:20 |
And whenwhile the blood of Stephenyour thy witness Stephen was shed I alsomyself was standing by and approving and keeping the garmentscoats of those who killed him |
| 22:21 |
AndThen he said to me Depart;Go for I will send you far away to the Gentiles |
| 22:22 |
Up to this wordpoint they listened to him; but then they liftedshouted up their voices and said Away with such a fellow from the earth For he oughtshould not be allowed to live |
| 22:23 |
And aswhile they criedwere outshouting andthrowing wavedoff their garmentscloaks and threwtossing dust into the air |
| 22:24 |
the tribune commandeddirected himthat he was to be brought into the barracks and ordered him to be examined by scourgingflogging to find out whythe theyreason shoutedfor thusthis outcry against him |
| 22:25 |
But when they had tied him up with the thongs Paul said to the centurion who was standing by Is it lawfullegal for you to scourgeflog a manRoman citizen who is a Roman citizen and uncondemned |
| 22:26 |
When the centurion heard that he went to the tribune and said to him What are you about to do ForThis this man is a Roman citizen |
| 22:27 |
SoThe the tribune came and saidasked toPaul him Tell me are you a Roman citizen And he said Yes |
| 22:28 |
The tribune answered IIt boughtcost thisme citizenship for a large sum of money to get my citizenship Paul said But I was born a citizen |
| 22:29 |
SoImmediately those who were about to examine him withdrewdrew back from him instantly; and the tribune also was afraid for he realized that Paul was a Roman citizen and that he had bound him |
| 22:30 |
ButSince onhe thewanted morrowto desiringfind toout knowwhat thePaul realwas reasonbeing whyaccused of by the Jews accusedthe himnext day he unboundreleased him and commandedordered the chief priests and all the entire council to meet andHe he brought Paul down and sethad him stand before them |
| 23:1 |
AndWhile Paul was looking intently at the council he said BrethrenBrothers up to this day I have lived beforemy Godlife inwith alla goodclear conscience upbefore toGod this day |
| 23:2 |
AndThen the high priest Anani′asAnanias commandedordered those whostanding stoodnear by him to strike him on the mouth |
| 23:3 |
ThenAt this Paul said to him God shallwill strike you you whitewashed wall Are you sitting there to judge me according to the law and yet contraryin toviolation of the law you order me to be struck |
| 23:4 |
Those whostanding stoodnearby by said WouldDo you reviledare to insult Gods high priest |
| 23:5 |
And Paul said I did not knowrealize brethrenbrothers that he was the high priest; for it is written You shall not speak evil of a rulerleader of your people |
| 23:6 |
ButWhen when Paul perceivednoticed that onesome part were Sad′duceesSadducees and theothers otherwere Pharisees he criedcalled out in the council BrethrenBrothers I am a Pharisee a son of Pharisees; withI respectam toon trial concerning the hope andof the resurrection of the dead I am on trial |
| 23:7 |
AndWhen when he had said this a dissension arosebegan between the Pharisees and the Sad′ducees;Sadducees and the assembly was divided |
| 23:8 |
ForThe theSadducees Sad′ducees say that there is no resurrection noror angel noror spirit; but the Pharisees acknowledge them all three |
| 23:9 |
Then a great clamor arose; and somecertain of the scribes of the Pharisees partygroup stood up and contended We find nothing wrong inwith this man What if a spirit or an angel spokehas spoken to him |
| 23:10 |
AndWhen when the dissension became violent the tribune afraidfearing that Paulthey would betear tornPaul into pieces byordered them commanded the soldiers to go down and take him by force from among them and bring him into the barracks |
| 23:11 |
TheThat following night the Lord stood bynear him and said TakeKeep up your courage forFor just as you have testified aboutfor me atin Jerusalem so you must bear witness also atin Rome |
| 23:12 |
WhenIn itthe wasmorning day the Jews madejoined in a plotconspiracy and bound themselves by an oath neither to eat nor drink tilluntil they had killed Paul |
| 23:13 |
There were more than forty who madejoined in this conspiracy |
| 23:14 |
AndThey they went to the chief priests and elders and said We have strictly bound ourselves by an oath to taste no food tilluntil we have killed Paul |
| 23:15 |
YouNow thereforethen alongyou withand the council givemust noticenotify now to the tribune to bring him down to you ason thoughthe pretext that you werewant going to determinemake a more thorough examination of his case more exactly And we are ready to killdo away with him before he comes neararrives |
| 23:16 |
Now the son of Pauls sister heard ofabout theirthe ambush; so he went and enteredgained entrance to the barracks and told Paul |
| 23:17 |
And Paul called one of the centurions and said Take this young man to the tribune; for he has something to tellreport to him |
| 23:18 |
So he took him and brought him to the tribune and said PaulThe the prisoner Paul called me and asked me to bring this young man to you; as he has something to saytell to you |
| 23:19 |
The tribune took him by the hand anddrew goinghim aside askedprivately himand privatelyasked What is it that you have to tellreport to me |
| 23:20 |
AndHe heanswered said The Jews have agreed to ask you to bring Paul down to the council tomorrow as though they were going to inquire somewhat more closelythoroughly aboutinto himhis case |
| 23:21 |
But do not yieldbe topersuaded by them; for more than forty of their men lieare lying in ambush for him havingThey have bound themselves by an oath neither to eat nor drink tilluntil they havekill killed him; andThey are ready now theyand are ready waiting for theyour promiseconsent from you |
| 23:22 |
So the tribune dismissed the young man chargingordering him Tell no one that you have informed me of this |
| 23:23 |
Then he calledsummoned two of the centurions and said AtGet theready thirdto hourleave ofby thenine nightoclock gettonight readyfor Caesarea with two hundred soldiers with seventy horsemen and two hundred spearmen to go as far as Caesare′a |
| 23:24 |
Also provide mounts for Paul to ride and bringtake him safely to Felix the governor |
| 23:25 |
AndHe he wrote a letter to this effect: |
| 23:26 |
Claudius Lys′iasLysias to his Excellency the governor Felix greetinggreetings |
| 23:27 |
This man was seized by the Jews and was about to be killed by them but when I camehad uponlearned themthat withhe thewas soldiersa andRoman rescuedcitizen himI havingcame learnedwith thatthe heguard wasand arescued Romanhim citizen |
| 23:28 |
AndSince desiringI wanted to know the charge onfor which they accused him I broughthad him downbrought to their council |
| 23:29 |
I found that he was accused aboutconcerning questions of their law but was charged with nothing deserving death or imprisonment |
| 23:30 |
AndWhen whenI it was disclosedinformed to me that there would be a plot against the man I sent him to you at once ordering his accusers also to state before you what they have against him |
| 23:31 |
So the soldiers according to their instructions took Paul and brought him byduring the night to Antip′atrisAntipatris |
| 23:32 |
AndThe onnext theday morrow they returnedlet to the barracks leaving the horsemen to go on with him while they returned to the barracks |
| 23:33 |
When they came to Caesare′aCaesarea and delivered the letter to the governor they presented Paul also before him |
| 23:34 |
On reading the letter he asked to what province he belonged Whento and when he learned that he was from Cili′ciaCilicia |
| 23:35 |
he said I will heargive you a hearing when your accusers arrive AndThen he commandedordered himthat tohe be guardedkept under guard in Herods praetoriumheadquarters |
| 24:1 |
AndFive afterdays fivelater days the high priest Anani′asAnanias came down with some elders and aan spokesmanattorney onea Tertul′luscertain TheyTertullus laidand beforethey thereported governor their case against Paul; to the governor |
| 24:2 |
andWhen whenPaul hehad wasbeen calledsummoned Tertul′lusTertullus began to accuse him saying: SinceYour throughExcellency because of you we enjoyhave muchlong enjoyed peace and sincereforms byhave yourbeen provisionmade mostfor excellentthis Felixpeople reformsbecause are introduced on behalf of thisyour nationforesight |
| 24:3 |
We welcome this in every way and everywhere we accept this with allutmost gratitude |
| 24:4 |
But to detain you no further I beg you in your kindness to hear us briefly with your customary graciousness |
| 24:5 |
ForWe we have in fact found this man a pestilent fellow an agitator among all the Jews throughout the world and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes |
| 24:6 |
He even tried to profane the temple butand so we seized him |
| 24:8 |
By examining him yourself you will be able to learn from him aboutconcerning everything of which we accuse him |
| 24:9 |
The Jews also joined in the charge affirmingby asserting that all this was sotrue |
| 24:10 |
AndWhen when the governor had motioned to him to speak Paul replied: RealizingI cheerfully make my defense knowing that for many years you have been a judge over this nation I cheerfully make my defense |
| 24:11 |
As you maycan ascertainfind out it is not more than twelve days since I went up to worship atin Jerusalem; |
| 24:12 |
andThey they did not find me disputing with anyanyone onein the temple or stirring up a crowd either in the temple or in the synagogues or inthroughout the city |
| 24:13 |
Neither can they prove to you whatthe charge that they now bring up against me |
| 24:14 |
But this I admit to you that according to the Way which they call a sect I worship the God of our fathersancestors believing everything laid down byaccording to the law or written in the prophets |
| 24:15 |
havingI have a hope in God—a whichhope thesethat they themselves also accept —that there will be a resurrection of both the justrighteous and the unjustunrighteous |
| 24:16 |
SoTherefore I alwaysdo takemy painsbest always to have a clear conscience toward God and towardall menpeople |
| 24:17 |
Now after some years I came to bring alms to my nation alms and offeringsto offer sacrifices |
| 24:18 |
AsWhile I was doing this they found me purified in the temple withoutcompleting anythe crowdrite orof tumultpurification Butwithout someany Jewscrowd fromor Asia—disturbance |
| 24:19 |
But there were some Jews from Asia—they ought to be here before you and to make an accusation if they have anything against me |
| 24:20 |
Or else let these men themselveshere saytell what wrongdoingcrime they had found when I stood before the council |
| 24:21 |
exceptunless it was this one thingsentence whichthat I criedcalled out while standing amongbefore them WithIt respectis toabout the resurrection of the dead that I am on trial before you thistoday day |
| 24:22 |
But Felix havingwho awas rather accuratewell knowledgeinformed ofabout the Way putadjourned themthe offhearing sayingwith the comment When Lys′iasLysias the tribune comes down I will decide your case |
| 24:23 |
Then he gaveordered orders to the centurion thatto hekeep shouldhim be kept in custody but shouldto let him have some liberty and thatnot noneto prevent any of his friends shouldfrom betaking preventedcare fromof attending to his needs |
| 24:24 |
AfterSome some days later when Felix came with his wife Drusil′laDrusilla who was aJewish Jewess; and he sent for Paul and heard him speak uponconcerning faith in Christ Jesus |
| 24:25 |
And as he argueddiscussed about justice and self control and futurethe coming judgment Felix wasbecame alarmedfrightened and said Go away for the present; when I have an opportunity I will summonsend for you |
| 24:26 |
At the same time he hoped that money would be given him by Paul Soand for that reason he sentused to send for him very often and conversedconverse with him |
| 24:27 |
ButAfter when two years had elapsedpassed Felix was succeeded by Porcius Festus; and desiringsince he wanted to dogrant the Jews a favor Felix left Paul in prison |
| 25:1 |
NowThree whendays after Festus had comearrived intoin histhe province after three days he went up from Caesarea to Jerusalem from Caesare′a |
| 25:2 |
Andwhere the chief priests and the principalleaders men of the Jews informedgave him a report against Paul; andThey theyappealed urgedto him |
| 25:3 |
askingand requested as a favor to them against Paul to have thehim mantransferred sent to Jerusalem They were in fact planning an ambush to kill him onalong the way |
| 25:4 |
Festus replied that Paul was being kept at Caesare′aCaesarea and that he himself intended to go there shortly |
| 25:5 |
So he said he let thethose men of authorityyou amongwho youhave gothe authority come down with me and if there is anything wrong about the man let them accuse him |
| 25:6 |
WhenAfter he had stayed among them not more than eight or ten days he went down to Caesare′aCaesarea; and the next day he took his seat on the tribunal and ordered Paul to be brought |
| 25:7 |
AndWhen when he hadarrived come the Jews who had gone down from Jerusalem stoodsurrounded about him bringing against him many serious charges against him which they could not prove |
| 25:8 |
Paul said in his defense NeitherI have in no way committed an offense against the law of the Jews noror against the temple noror against Caesarthe haveemperor I offended at all |
| 25:9 |
But Festus wishing to do the Jews a favor saidasked to Paul Do you wish to go up to Jerusalem and there be tried there before me on these charges before me |
| 25:10 |
But Paul said I am standingappealing beforeto Caesarsthe emperors tribunal; this is where I oughtshould to be tried; to the Jews I have done no wrong to the Jews as you know very well know |
| 25:11 |
IfNow thenif I am ain wrongdoerthe wrong and have committed anythingsomething for which I deserve to die I doam not seektrying to escape death; but if there is nothing into their charges against me no one can giveturn me upover to them I appeal to Caesarthe emperor |
| 25:12 |
Then Festus whenafter he had conferred with his council answeredreplied You have appealed to Caesarthe emperor; to Caesarthe emperor you shallwill go |
| 25:13 |
NowAfter whenseveral some days had passed King Agrippa the king and Berni′ceBernice arrived at Caesare′aCaesarea to welcome Festus |
| 25:14 |
AndSince as they stayedwere staying there manyseveral days Festus laid Pauls case before the king saying There is a man here who was left prisonerin prison by Felix; |
| 25:15 |
andWhen when I was atin Jerusalem the chief priests and the elders of the Jews gaveinformed informationme about him askingand asked for a sentence against him |
| 25:16 |
I answeredtold them that it was not the custom of the Romans to givehand upover anyanyone one before the accused had met the accusers face to face and had been given an opportunity to make hisa defense concerningagainst the charge laid against him |
| 25:17 |
WhenSo thereforewhen they camemet together here I madelost no delaytime but on the next day took my seat on the tribunal and ordered the man to be brought in |
| 25:18 |
When the accusers stood up they broughtdid nonot charge inhim hiswith caseany of suchthe evilscrimes asthat I supposed;was expecting |
| 25:19 |
butInstead they had certain points of disputedisagreement with him about their own superstitionreligion and about onea certain Jesus who washad deaddied but whom Paul asserted to be alive |
| 25:20 |
BeingSince I was at a loss how to investigate these questions I asked whether he wished to go to Jerusalem and be tried there regardingon themthese charges |
| 25:21 |
But when Paul had appealed to be kept in custody for the decision of thehis emperorImperial Majesty I commandedordered him to be held until I could send him to Caesarthe emperor |
| 25:22 |
And Agrippa said to Festus I shouldwould like to hear the man myself Tomorrow he said he you shallwill hear him |
| 25:23 |
So on the morrownext day Agrippa and Berni′ceBernice came with great pomp and they entered the audience hall with the military tribunes and the prominent men of the city Then byFestus commandgave ofthe Festusorder and Paul was brought in |
| 25:24 |
And Festus said King Agrippa and all whohere are present with us you see this man about whom the whole Jewish peoplecommunity petitioned me both atin Jerusalem and here shouting that he ought not to live any longer |
| 25:25 |
But I found that he had done nothing deserving death; and aswhen he himself appealed to thehis emperorImperial Majesty I decided to send him |
| 25:26 |
But I have nothing definite to write to myour lordsovereign about him Therefore I have brought him before all of you and especially before you King Agrippa so that after we have examined him I may have something to write— |
| 25:27 |
Forfor it seems to me unreasonable into sendingsend a prisoner notwithout toindicating indicate the charges against him |
| 26:1 |
Agrippa said to Paul You have permission to speak for yourself Then Paul stretched out his hand and madebegan histo defensedefend himself: |
| 26:2 |
I thinkconsider myself fortunate that it is before you King Agrippa I am to make my defense today against all the accusations of the Jews |
| 26:3 |
because you are especially familiar with all the customs and controversies of the Jews; therefore I beg of you to listen to me patiently |
| 26:4 |
MyAll mannerthe Jews know my way of life from my youth a life spent from the beginning among my own nationpeople and atin Jerusalem is known by all the Jews |
| 26:5 |
They have known for a long time if they are willing to testify that accordingI have belonged to the strictest partysect of our religion Iand have lived as a Pharisee |
| 26:6 |
And now I stand here on trial foron account of my hope in the promise made by God to our fathersancestors |
| 26:7 |
toa whichpromise that our twelve tribes hope to attain as they earnestly worship nightday and daynight AndIt is for this hope your Excellency that I am accused by Jews O king |
| 26:9 |
Indeed I myself was convinced that I ought to do many things inagainst opposing the name of Jesus of Nazareth |
| 26:10 |
And that is what I did so in Jerusalem; with authority received from the chief priests I not only shutlocked up many of the saints in prison bybut authorityI fromalso thecast chiefmy priestsvote butagainst them when they were putbeing condemned to death I cast my vote against them |
| 26:11 |
AndBy Ipunishing punished them often in all the synagogues andI tried to makeforce them to blaspheme; and insince ragingI furywas againstso furiously enraged at them I persecutedpursued them even to foreign cities |
| 26:12 |
ThusWith this in mind I journeyedwas traveling to Damascus with the authority and commission of the chief priests |
| 26:13 |
Atwhen at midday Oalong kingthe Iroad sawyour onExcellency theI waysaw a light from heaven brighter than the sun shining roundaround me and thosemy whocompanions journeyed with me |
| 26:14 |
AndWhen when we had all fallen to the ground I heard a voice saying to me in the Hebrew language Saul Saul why doare you persecutepersecuting me It hurts you to kick against the goads |
| 26:15 |
And I saidasked Who are you Lord AndThe the Lord saidanswered I am Jesus whom you are persecuting |
| 26:16 |
But riseget up and stand uponon your feet; for I have appeared to you for this purpose to appoint you to serve and beartestify witness to the things in which you have seen me and to those in which I will appear to you |
| 26:17 |
deliveringI will rescue you from theyour people and from the Gentiles—to whom I sendam sending you |
| 26:18 |
to open their eyes so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me |
| 26:19 |
WhereforeAfter Othat King Agrippa I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision |
| 26:20 |
but declared first to those atin Damascus then atin Jerusalem and throughout all the countrycountryside of Judea and also to the Gentiles that they should repent and turn to God and performdo deeds worthyconsistent ofwith their repentance |
| 26:22 |
To this day I have had the help that comes from God and so I stand here testifying to both to small and great saying nothing but what the prophets and Moses said would cometake to passplace: |
| 26:23 |
that the ChristMessiah must suffer and that by being the first to rise from the dead he would proclaim light both to theour people and to the Gentiles |
| 26:24 |
AndWhile as he thuswas mademaking histhis defense Festus saidexclaimed withYou aare loudout voiceof Paulyour youmind arePaul mad;Too yourmuch great learning is turningdriving you madinsane |
| 26:25 |
But Paul said I am not madout of my mind most excellent Festus but I am speaking the sober truth |
| 26:26 |
ForIndeed the king knows about these things and to him I speak freely; for I am persuadedcertain that none of these things has escaped his notice for this was not done in a corner |
| 26:28 |
And Agrippa said to Paul InAre ayou shortso timequickly youpersuading thinkme to makebecome me a Christian |
| 26:29 |
And Paul saidreplied Whether shortquickly or longnot I wouldpray to God that not only you but also all who hearare listening to me thistoday day might become such as I am—except for these chains |
| 26:30 |
Then the king rosegot up and with him the governor and Berni′ceBernice and those who werehad sittingbeen seated with them; |
| 26:31 |
and whenas they hadwere withdrawnleaving they said to one another This man is doing nothing to deserve death or imprisonment |
| 26:32 |
And Agrippa said to Festus This man could have been set free if he had not appealed to Caesarthe emperor |
| 27:1 |
AndWhen when it was decided that we shouldwere to sail for Italy they deliveredtransferred Paul and some other prisoners to a centurion of the Augustan Cohort named Julius |
| 27:2 |
AndEmbarking embarkingon in a ship of Adramyt′tiumAdramyttium whichthat was about to set sail to the ports along the coast of Asia we put to sea accompanied by Aristar′chusAristarchus a Macedo′nianMacedonian from Thessaloni′caThessalonica |
| 27:3 |
The next day we put in at Sidon; and Julius treated Paul kindly and gaveallowed him leave to go to his friends andto be cared for |
| 27:4 |
AndPutting puttingout to sea from there we sailed under the lee of Cyprus because the winds were against us |
| 27:5 |
AndAfter when we had sailed across the sea whichthat is off Cili′ciaCilicia and Pamphyl′iaPamphylia we came to Myra in Ly′ciaLycia |
| 27:6 |
There the centurion found aan Alexandrian ship ofbound Alexandria sailing for Italy and put us on board |
| 27:7 |
We sailed slowly for a number of days and arrived with difficulty off Cni′dusCnidus and as the wind didwas notagainst allow us to go on we sailed under the lee of Crete off Salmo′neSalmone |
| 27:8 |
CoastingSailing alongpast it with difficulty we came to a place called Fair Havens near which was the city of Lase′aLasea |
| 27:9 |
AsSince much time had been lost and thesailing voyage was alreadynow dangerous because even the fastFast had already gone by Paul advised them |
| 27:10 |
saying Sirs I perceivecan see that the voyage will be with injurydanger and much heavy loss not only of the cargo and the ship but also of our lives |
| 27:11 |
But the centurion paid more attention to the captainpilot and to the owner of the ship than to what Paul said |
| 27:12 |
AndSince because the harbor was not suitable tofor spending the winter in the majority advisedwas toin putfavor of putting to sea from there on the chance that somehow they could reach Phoenix where they could spend the winter It was a harbor of Crete lookingfacing northeastsouthwest and southeast and winter therenorthwest |
| 27:13 |
AndWhen whena themoderate south wind blewbegan gentlyto supposingblow thatthey thought they hadcould obtainedachieve their purpose; so they weighed anchor and sailedbegan alongto sail past Crete close inshoreto the shore |
| 27:14 |
But soon a tempestuousviolent wind called the northeaster struckrushed down from theCrete land; |
| 27:15 |
andSince when the ship was caught and could not facebe turned head on into the wind we gave way to it and were driven |
| 27:16 |
AndBy running under the lee of a small island called Cauda we managedwere withscarcely difficultyable to secureget the ships boat; under control |
| 27:17 |
afterAfter hoisting it up they took measures to undergird the ship; then fearing that they shouldwould run on the Syr′tisSyrtis they lowered the gearsea anchor and so were driven |
| 27:18 |
AsWe we were violentlybeing pounded by the storm tossedso theyviolently beganthat on the next day they began to throw the cargo overboard; |
| 27:19 |
and on the third day they cast out with their own hands they threw the ships tackle ofoverboard the ship |
| 27:20 |
AndWhen when neither sun nor stars appeared for many adays day and no small tempest layraged on us all hope of our being saved was at last abandoned |
| 27:21 |
AsSince they had been long without food for a long time Paul then camestood forwardup among them and said Men you should have listened to me and should not have set sail from Crete and incurredthereby avoided this injurydamage and loss |
| 27:22 |
I urge you now bidto youkeep takeup heart;your courage for there will be no loss of life among you but only of the ship |
| 27:23 |
For thislast very night there stood by me an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I worship |
| 27:24 |
and he said Do not be afraid Paul; you must stand before Caesarthe emperor; and loindeed God has granted yousafety to all those who sailare sailing with you |
| 27:25 |
So takekeep heartup your courage men for I have faith in God that it will be exactly as I have been told |
| 27:26 |
But we shallwill have to run aground on some island |
| 27:27 |
When the fourteenth night had come as we were drifting across the sea of A′driaAdria about midnight the sailors suspected that they were nearing land |
| 27:28 |
So they soundedtook soundings and found twenty fathoms; a little farther on they soundedtook soundings again and found fifteen fathoms |
| 27:29 |
AndFearing fearing that we might run on the rocks they let outdown four anchors from the stern and prayed for day to come |
| 27:30 |
AndBut aswhen the sailors weretried seeking to escape from the ship and had lowered the boat into the sea underon pretensethe pretext of layingputting out anchors from the bow |
| 27:32 |
Then the soldiers cut away the ropes of the boat and letset it goadrift |
| 27:33 |
AsJust daybefore wasdaybreak aboutPaul tourged dawnall Paulof urged them all to take some food saying Today is the fourteenth day that you have continuedbeen in suspense and remaining without food having takeneaten nothing |
| 27:34 |
Therefore I urge you to take some food; for it will givehelp you strengthsurvive; sincefor notnone aof hairyou iswill tolose perisha hair from theyour headheads of any of you |
| 27:35 |
AndAfter when he had said this he took bread; and giving thanks to God in the presence of all he broke it and began to eat |
| 27:36 |
Then they all of them were encouraged and atetook some food for themselves |
| 27:37 |
We were in all two hundred and seventy six persons in the ship |
| 27:38 |
AndAfter when they had eatensatisfied enoughtheir hunger they lightened the ship by throwing out the wheat into the sea |
| 27:39 |
NowIn whenthe itmorning was day they did not recognize the land but they noticed a bay with a beach on which they planned if possible to bringrun the ship ashore if they could |
| 27:40 |
So they cast off the anchors and left them in the sea atAt the same time looseningthey loosened the ropes that tied the rudderssteering oars; then hoisting the foresail to the wind they made for the beach |
| 27:41 |
But striking a shoalreef they ran the vesselship aground; the bow stuck and remained immovable andbut the stern was being broken up by the surfforce of the waves |
| 27:42 |
The soldiers plan was to kill the prisoners lestso anythat shouldnone might swim away and escape; |
| 27:43 |
but the centurion wishing to save Paul kept them from carrying out their purposeplan He ordered those who could swim to throwjump themselves overboard first and make for the land |
| 27:44 |
and the rest to follow some on planks orand others on pieces of the ship And so it was that all escapedwere brought safely to land |
| 28:1 |
After we had escapedreached safety we then learned that the island was called Malta |
| 28:2 |
AndThe the natives showed us unusual kindness forSince it had begun to rain and was cold they kindled a fire and welcomed us all becauseof itus hadaround begunit to rain and was cold |
| 28:3 |
Paul had gathered a bundle of sticksbrushwood and putwas themputting it on the fire when a viper camedriven out becauseby of the heat and fastened itself on his hand |
| 28:4 |
When the natives saw the creature hanging from his hand they said to one another NoThis doubtman thismust manbe is a murderer; Thoughthough he has escaped from the sea justice has not allowed him to live |
| 28:6 |
They waitedwere expecting him to swell up or suddenlydrop fall down dead; but whenafter they had waited a long time and saw nothat misfortunenothing comeunusual had happened to him they changed their minds and saidbegan to say that he was a god |
| 28:7 |
Now in the neighborhood of that place were lands belonging to the chiefleading man of the island named Publius who received us and entertained us hospitably for three days |
| 28:8 |
It so happened that the father of Publius lay sick in bed with fever and dysentery; and Paul visited him and prayedcured him by praying and putting his hands on him healed him |
| 28:9 |
AndAfter when this hadhappened taken place the rest of the people on the island who had diseases also came and were cured |
| 28:10 |
They presentedbestowed many giftshonors toon us; and when we sailedwere about to sail they put on board whateverall the provisions we needed |
| 28:11 |
AfterThree three months later we set sail inon a ship whichthat had wintered inat the island aan Alexandrian ship of Alexandria with the Twin Brothers as its figurehead |
| 28:12 |
PuttingWe put in at Syracuse weand stayed there for three days; |
| 28:13 |
Andthen from there we madeweighed aanchor circuit and arrivedcame atto Rhe′gium;Rhegium andAfter after one day there a south wind sprang up and on the second day we came to Pute′oliPuteoli |
| 28:14 |
There we found brethrenbelievers and were invited to stay with them for seven days And so we came to Rome |
| 28:15 |
AndThe thebelievers brethrenfrom there when they heard of us came as far as the Forum of Ap′piusAppius and Three Taverns to meet us On seeing them Paul thanked God and took courage |
| 28:16 |
AndWhen when we came into Rome Paul was allowed to staylive by himself with the soldier thatwho guardedwas guarding him |
| 28:17 |
AfterThree three days later he called together the local leaders of the Jews; andWhen when they had gatheredassembled he said to them BrethrenBrothers though I had done nothing against theour people or the customs of our fathersancestors yet I was deliveredarrested prisonerin from Jerusalem intoand thehanded handsover ofto the Romans |
| 28:18 |
When they had examined me theythe wishedRomans wanted to setrelease me at liberty because there was no reason for the death penalty in my case |
| 28:19 |
But when the Jews objected I was compelled to appeal to Caesarthe emperor—even though I had no charge to bring against my nation |
| 28:20 |
For this reason therefore I have asked to see you and speak with you since it is becausefor the sake of the hope of Israel that I am bound with this chain |
| 28:21 |
AndThey theyreplied said to him We have received no letters from Judea about you and none of the brethrenbrothers coming here has reported or spoken anyanything evil about you |
| 28:22 |
But we desirewould like to hear from you what youryou viewsthink are; for with regard to this sect we know that everywhere it is spoken against |
| 28:23 |
WhenAfter they had appointedset a day forto meet with him they came to him at his lodginglodgings in great numbers AndFrom morning until evening he expoundedexplained the matter to them from morning till evening testifying to the kingdom of God and trying to convince them about Jesus both from the law of Moses and from the prophets |
| 28:24 |
AndSome some were convinced by what he had said while others disbelievedrefused to believe |
| 28:25 |
So as they disagreed amongwith themselveseach other; and as they departedwere afterleaving Paul had made one further statement: The Holy Spirit was right in saying to your fathersancestors through Isaiah the prophet: Isaiah |
| 28:26 |
Go to this people and say You shallwill indeed hearlisten but never understand and you shallwill indeed seelook but never perceive |
| 28:27 |
For this peoples heart has grown dull and their ears are heavyhard of hearing and their eyes they have closedshut their eyes; lestso that they shouldmight perceivenot look with their eyes and hearlisten with their ears and understand with their heart and turn— forand meI towould heal them |
| 28:30 |
AndHe he lived there two whole years at his own expense and welcomed all who came to him |
