| 1:2 |
NowAhaziah Ahazi′ahhad fellfallen through the lattice in his upper chamber in Samar′iaSamaria and lay sickinjured; so he sent messengers telling them Go inquire of Ba′alBaal ze′bubzebub the god of Ekron whether I shall recover from this sicknessinjury |
| 1:3 |
But the angel of the Lord said to Eli′jahElijah the Tishbite AriseGet up go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samar′iaSamaria and say to them Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are going to inquire of Ba′alBaal ze′bubzebub the god of Ekron |
| 1:4 |
Now therefore thus says the Lord You shall not comeleave down from the bed to which you have gone but you shall surely die So Eli′jahElijah went |
| 1:5 |
The messengers returned to the king andwho he said to them Why have you returned |
| 1:6 |
AndThey theyanswered said to him There came a man to meet us andwho said to us Go back to the king who sent you and say to him: Thus says the Lord: Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are sending to inquire of Ba′alBaal ze′bubzebub the god of Ekron Therefore you shall not comeleave down from the bed to which you have gone but shall surely die |
| 1:7 |
He said to them What kindsort of man was he who came to meet you and told you these things |
| 1:8 |
They answered him HeA worehairy aman garment of haircloth with a girdleleather ofbelt leatheraround about his loinswaist AndHe he said It is Eli′jahElijah the Tishbite |
| 1:9 |
Then the king sent to him a captain of fifty men with his fifty men He went up to Eli′jahElijah who was sitting on the top of a hill and said to him O man of God the king says Come down |
| 1:10 |
But Eli′jahElijah answered the captain of fifty If I am a man of God let fire come down from heaven and consume you and your fifty Then fire came down from heaven and consumed him and his fifty |
| 1:11 |
Again the king sent to him another captain of fifty men with his fifty AndHe he went up and said to him O man of God this is the kings order: Come down quickly |
| 1:12 |
But Eli′jahElijah answered them If I am a man of God let fire come down from heaven and consume you and your fifty Then the fire of God came down from heaven and consumed him and his fifty |
| 1:13 |
Again the king sent the captain of a third fifty with his fifty AndSo the third captain of fifty went up and came and fell on his knees before Eli′jahElijah and entreated him O man of God Iplease pray you let my life and the life of these fifty servants of yours be precious in your sight |
| 1:14 |
LoLook fire came down from heaven and consumed the two former captains of fifty men with their fifties; but now let my life be precious in your sight |
| 1:15 |
Then the angel of the Lord said to Eli′jahElijah Go down with him; do not be afraid of him So he aroseset out and went down with him to the king |
| 1:16 |
and said to him Thus says the Lord: Because you have sent messengers to inquire of Ba′alBaal ze′bubzebub the god of Ekron—is it because there is no God in Israel to inquire of his word—therefore you shall not comeleave down from the bed to which you have gone but you shall surely die |
| 1:17 |
So he died according to the word of the Lord whichthat Eli′jahElijah had spoken Jeho′ramHis his brother becameJehoram kingsucceeded inhim hisas steadking in the second year of Jeho′ramKing theJehoram son of Jehosh′aphatJehoshaphat king of Judah because Ahazi′ahAhaziah had no son |
| 1:18 |
Now the rest of the acts of Ahazi′ahAhaziah whichthat he did are they not written in the Book of the ChroniclesAnnals of the Kings of Israel |
| 2:1 |
Now when the Lord was about to take Eli′jahElijah up to heaven by a whirlwind Eli′jahElijah and Eli′shaElisha were on their way from Gilgal |
| 2:2 |
AndElijah Eli′jah said to Eli′shaElisha TarryStay here I pray you; for the Lord has sent me as far as Bethel But Eli′shaElisha said As the Lord lives and as you yourself live I will not leave you So they went down to Bethel |
| 2:3 |
AndThe thecompany sons of the prophets who were in Bethel came out to Eli′shaElisha and said to him Do you know that today the Lord will take away your master away from over you And he said Yes I know it; holdkeep your peacesilent |
| 2:4 |
Eli′jahElijah said to him Eli′shaElisha tarrystay here I pray you; for the Lord has sent me to Jericho But he said As the Lord lives and as you yourself live I will not leave you So they came to Jericho |
| 2:5 |
The sonscompany of the prophets who were at Jericho drew near to Eli′shaElisha and said to him Do you know that today the Lord will take away your master away from over you And he answered Yes I know it; holdbe your peacesilent |
| 2:6 |
Then Eli′jahElijah said to him TarryStay here I pray you; for the Lord has sent me to the Jordan But he said As the Lord lives and as you yourself live I will not leave you So the two of them went on |
| 2:7 |
Fifty men of the sonscompany of the prophets also went and stood at some distance from them as they both were standing by the Jordan |
| 2:8 |
Then Eli′jahElijah took his mantle and rolled it up and struck the water; and the water was parted to the one side and to the other tilluntil the two of them couldcrossed go over on dry ground |
| 2:9 |
When they had crossed Eli′jahElijah said to Eli′shaElisha AskTell me what I shallmay do for you before I am taken from you AndElisha Eli′sha said IPlease pray you let me inherit a double share of your spirit |
| 2:10 |
AndHe heresponded said You have asked a hard thing; yet if you see me as I am being taken from you it shallwill be sogranted for you; but if you do not see me it shallwill not be so |
| 2:11 |
AndAs as they stillcontinued wentwalking on and talkedtalking behold a chariot of fire and horses of fire separated the two of them Andand Eli′jahElijah wentascended upin by a whirlwind into heaven |
| 2:12 |
AndElisha Eli′shakept sawwatching it and hecrying criedout MyFather father myThe father the chariots of Israel and its horsemen AndBut when he sawcould him no morelonger Thensee him he tookgrasped hold of his own clothes and renttore them in two pieces |
| 2:13 |
AndHe hepicked took up the mantle of Eli′jahElijah that had fallen from him and went back and stood on the bank of the Jordan |
| 2:14 |
ThenHe he took the mantle of Eli′jahElijah that had fallen from him and struck the water saying Where is the Lord the God of Eli′jahElijah AndWhen when he had struck the water the water was parted to the one side and to the other; and Eli′shaElisha went over |
| 2:15 |
NowWhen when the sonscompany of the prophets who were at Jericho saw him overat againsta themdistance they saiddeclared The spirit of Eli′jahElijah rests on Eli′shaElisha AndThey they came to meet him and bowed to the ground before him |
| 2:16 |
AndThey they said to him BeholdSee now therewe arehave withfifty yourstrong servantsmen fiftyamong strongyour menservants; prayplease let them go and seek your master; it may be that the Spiritspirit of the Lord has caught him up and castthrown him upondown on some mountain or into some valley AndHe heresponded saidNo Youdo shall not send them |
| 2:17 |
But when they urged him tilluntil he was ashamed he said Send Theythem So they sent therefore fifty men; andwho searched for three days they sought him but did not find him |
| 2:18 |
AndWhen they came back to him while he tarriedhad remained at Jericho and he said to them Did I not say to you Do not go |
| 2:19 |
Now the menpeople of the city said to Eli′shaElisha BeholdThe thelocation situation of this city is pleasantgood as my lord sees; but the water is bad and the land is unfruitful |
| 2:21 |
Then he went to the spring of water and threw the salt ininto it and said Thus says the Lord I have made this water wholesome; henceforthfrom now on neither death nor miscarriage shall come from it |
| 2:22 |
So the water has been wholesome to this day according to the word whichthat Eli′shaElisha spoke |
| 2:23 |
He went up from there to Bethel; and while he was going up on the way some small boys came out of the city and jeered at him saying Go upaway you baldhead Go upaway you baldhead |
| 2:24 |
AndWhen he turned around and when he saw them he cursed them in the name of the Lord AndThen two she bears came out of the woods and toremauled forty two of the boys |
| 2:25 |
From there he went on to Mount Carmel and thencethen he returned to Samar′iaSamaria |
| 3:1 |
In the eighteenth year of Jehosh′aphatKing kingJehoshaphat of Judah Jeho′ramJehoram the son of Ahab became king over Israel in Samar′iaSamaria; and he reigned twelve years |
| 3:2 |
He did what was evil in the sight of the Lord though not like his father and mother for he putremoved away the pillar of Ba′alBaal whichthat his father had made |
| 3:3 |
Nevertheless he clung to the sin of Jerobo′amJeroboam the son of Nebat which he madecaused Israel to sincommit; he did not depart from it |
| 3:4 |
Now King Mesha king of Moab was a sheep breeder; andwho heused had to deliver annually to the king of Israel aone hundred thousand lambs and the wool of aone hundred thousand rams |
| 3:6 |
So King Jeho′ramJehoram marched out of Samar′iaSamaria at that time and mustered all Israel |
| 3:7 |
AndAs he went andhe sent word to Jehosh′aphatKing kingJehoshaphat of Judah The king of Moab has rebelled against me; will you go with me to battle against Moab AndHe heanswered said I will go; I am aswith you are my people asare your people my horses asare your horses |
| 3:8 |
Then he saidasked By which way shall we march Jeho′ramJehoram answered By the way of the wilderness of Edom |
| 3:9 |
So the king of Israel went with the king of Judah and the king of Edom Andset out; and when they had made a circuitousroundabout march of seven days there was no water for the army or for the beastsanimals whichthat followedwere with them |
| 3:10 |
Then the king of Israel said Alas The Lord has calledsummoned theseus three kings only to givebe themhanded intoover theto hand of Moab |
| 3:11 |
AndBut Jehosh′aphatJehoshaphat said Is there no prophet of the Lord here through whom we may inquire of the Lord Then one of the servants of the king of IsraelsIsrael servants answered Eli′shaElisha the son of Shaphat iswho hereused whoto pouredpour water on the hands of Eli′jahElijah is here |
| 3:12 |
AndJehoshaphat Jehosh′aphat said The word of the Lord is with him So the king of Israel and Jehosh′aphatJehoshaphat and the king of Edom went down to him |
| 3:13 |
AndElisha Eli′sha said to the king of Israel What have I to do with you Go to the prophets of your fatherfathers andprophets theor prophetsto of your mothermothers But the king of Israel said to him No; it is the Lord who has calledsummoned theseus three kings only to givebe themhanded intoover theto hand of Moab |
| 3:14 |
AndElisha Eli′sha said As the Lord of hosts lives whom I serve were it not that I have regard for Jehosh′aphatKing theJehoshaphat king of Judah I would give you neither a look at you nor seea youglance |
| 3:15 |
But nowget bring me a minstrelmusician And whenthen while the minstrelmusician playedwas playing the power of the Lord came uponon him |
| 3:16 |
And he said Thus says the Lord I will make this drywadi stream bed full of pools |
| 3:17 |
For thus says the Lord You shall not see neither wind ornor rain but thatthe streamwadi bed shall be filled with water so that you shall drink you your cattle and your beastsanimals |
| 3:18 |
This is only a lighttrifle thing in the sight of the Lord; for he will also givehand theMoab Moabitesover intoto youryou hand |
| 3:19 |
andYou you shall conquer every fortified city and every choice city; and shall fell every good tree andyou stopshall upfell all springs of water you shall stop up and ruin every good piece of land you shall ruin with stones |
| 3:20 |
The next morningday about the time of offering the sacrificemorning beholdoffering suddenly water camebegan to flow from the direction of Edom tilluntil the country was filled with water |
| 3:22 |
AndWhen when they rose early in the morning and the sun shone upon the water the Moabites saw the water opposite them as red as blood |
| 3:23 |
AndThey they said This is blood; the kings must have surely fought together and slainkilled one another Now then Moab to the spoil |
| 3:24 |
But when they came to the camp of Israel the Israelites rose up and attacked the Moabites tillwho they fled before them; andas they wententered forwardMoab slaughteringthey continued the Moabitesattack as they went |
| 3:25 |
AndThe cities they overthrewoverturned the cities and on every good piece of land everyeveryone man threw a stone until it was covered; they stopped every spring of water andthey felledstopped allup theand every good trees;tree tillthey onlyfelled itsOnly stonesat wereKir lefthareseth indid Kirthe har′esethstone andwalls remain until the slingers surrounded and conqueredattacked it |
| 3:27 |
Then he took his eldestfirstborn son who was to reignsucceed inhim his stead and offered him foras a burnt offering uponon the wall And there came great wrath came upon Israel; andso they withdrew from him and returned to their own land |
| 4:1 |
Now the wife of onea member of the sonscompany of the prophets cried to Eli′shaElisha Your servant my husband is dead; and you know that your servant feared the Lord but thea creditor has come to take my two children toas be his slaves |
| 4:2 |
AndElisha Eli′sha said to her What shall I do for you Tell me; what havedo you have in the house AndShe sheanswered said Your maidservantservant has nothing in the house except a jar of oil |
| 4:3 |
ThenHe he said Go outside borrow vessels offrom all your neighbors empty vessels and not toojust a few |
| 4:4 |
Then go in and shut the door uponbehind yourselfyou and your sonschildren and pourstart pouring into all these vessels; and when oneeach is full set it aside |
| 4:5 |
So she wentleft from him and shut the door uponbehind herselfher and her sonschildren; and as she poured they broughtkept thebringing vessels to her and she kept pouring |
| 4:6 |
When the vessels were full she said to her son Bring me another vessel AndBut he said to her There isare notno anothermore Then the oil stopped flowing |
| 4:7 |
She came and told the man of God and he said Go sell the oil and pay your debts and you and your sonschildren can live on the rest |
| 4:8 |
One day Eli′shaElisha wentwas onpassing tothrough Shunem where a wealthy woman lived who urged him to eathave somea foodmeal So whenever he passed that way he would turnstop in there tofor eata foodmeal |
| 4:9 |
AndShe she said to her husband BeholdLook now I perceiveam sure that this man who regularly passes our way is a holy man of God who is continually passing our way |
| 4:10 |
Let us make a small roof chamber with walls and put there for him a bed a table a chair and a lamp so that he can stay there whenever he comes to us he can go in there |
| 4:11 |
One day when he came there and he turnedwent intoup to the chamber and restedlay down there |
| 4:12 |
AndHe he said to Geha′zi his servant Gehazi Call thisthe Shu′nammiteShunammite woman When he had called her she stood before him |
| 4:13 |
AndHe he said to him Say now to her SeeSince you have taken all this trouble for us; what ismay to be done for you Would you have a word spoken on your behalf to the king or to the commander of the army She answered I dwelllive among my own people |
| 4:14 |
AndHe he said What then ismay to be done for her Geha′ziGehazi answered Well she has no son and her husband is old |
| 4:15 |
He said Call her AndWhen when he had called her she stood inat the doorwaydoor |
| 4:16 |
AndHe he said At this season whenin thedue time comes round you shall embrace a son AndShe shereplied said No my lord O man of God; do not liedeceive to your maidservant servant |
| 4:17 |
ButThe the woman conceived and she bore a son aboutat that timeseason thein followingdue springtime as Eli′shaElisha had saiddeclared to her |
| 4:18 |
When the child hadwas grownolder he went out one day to his father among the reapers |
| 4:19 |
AndHe hecomplained said to his father Oh my head my head The father said to his servant Carry him to his mother |
| 4:20 |
AndHe whencarried he had lifted him and brought him to his mother; the child sat on her lap tilluntil noon and then he died |
| 4:21 |
AndShe she went up and laid him on the bed of the man of God andclosed shut the door uponon him and wentleft out |
| 4:22 |
Then she called to her husband and said Send me one of the servants and one of the assesdonkeys so that I may quickly go to the man of God and come back again |
| 4:23 |
AndHe he said Why will you go to him today It is neither new moon nor sabbath She said It will be wellall right |
| 4:24 |
Then she saddled the assdonkey and she said to her servant Urge the beastanimal on; do not slackenhold theback pace for me unless I tell you |
| 4:25 |
So she set out and came to the man of God at Mount Carmel When the man of God saw her coming he said to Geha′ziGehazi his servant Look yonderthere is the Shu′nammiteShunammite woman; |
| 4:26 |
run at once to meet her and say to her IsAre ityou wellall withright you Is it well with your husband Isall itright wellIs with the child Andall sheright She answered It is wellall right |
| 4:27 |
AndWhen when she came to the mountain to the man of God at the mountain she caught hold of his feet AndGehazi Geha′ziapproached came to thrustpush her away But the man of God said Let her alone for she is in bitter distress; and the Lord has hidden it from me and has not told me |
| 4:28 |
Then she said Did I ask my lord for a son Did I not say Do not deceivemislead me |
| 4:29 |
He said to Geha′ziGehazi Gird up your loins and take my staff in your hand and go If you meet anyanyone onegive dono notgreeting salute him; and if anyanyone onegreets salutes you do not replyanswer; and lay my staff uponon the face of the child |
| 4:30 |
Then the mother of the child said As the Lord lives and as you yourself live I will not leave without you So he aroserose up and followed her |
| 4:31 |
Geha′ziGehazi went on ahead and laid the staff uponon the face of the child but there was no sound or sign of life ThereforeHe hecame returnedback to meet him and told him The child has not awakedawakened |
| 4:32 |
When Eli′shaElisha came into the house he saw the child lying dead on his bed |
| 4:33 |
So he went in and shutclosed the door uponon the two of them and prayed to the Lord |
| 4:34 |
Then he wentgot up on the bed and lay upon the child putting his mouth upon his mouth his eyes upon his eyes and his hands upon his hands; and aswhile he stretchedlay himselfbent uponover him the flesh of the child became warm |
| 4:35 |
ThenHe he got updown again and walked once to and fro in the houseroom andthen wentgot up again and stretchedbent himselfover upon him; the child sneezed seven times and the child opened his eyes |
| 4:36 |
ThenElisha he summoned Geha′ziGehazi and said Call thisthe Shu′nammiteShunammite woman So he called her AndWhen when she came to him he said Take up your son |
| 4:37 |
She came and fell at his feet bowing to the ground; then she took up her son and went outleft |
| 4:38 |
AndWhen Eli′shaElisha camereturned again to Gilgal when there was a famine in the land AndAs as the sonscompany of the prophets werewas sitting before him he said to his servant SetPut on the greatlarge pot on and boilmake pottagesome stew for the sonscompany of the prophets |
| 4:39 |
One of them went out into the field to gather herbs; andhe found a wild vine and gathered from it hisa laplapful full of wild gourds and came and cut them up into the pot of pottagestew not knowing what they were |
| 4:40 |
AndThey theyserved pouredsome out for the men to eat But while they were eating of the pottagestew they cried out O man of God there is death in the pot AndThey they could not eat it |
| 4:41 |
He said Then bring mealsome Andflour heHe threw it into the pot and said PourServe out for the menpeople thatand theylet maythem eat And there was nonothing harmharmful in the pot |
| 4:42 |
A man came from Ba′alBaal shal′ishahshalishah bringing thefood manfrom ofthe Godfirst breadfruits ofto the firstman fruitsof God: twenty loaves of barley and fresh ears of grain in his sack AndElisha Eli′sha said Give it to the menpeople thatand theylet maythem eat |
| 4:43 |
But his servant said How amcan I to set this before a hundred menSopeople So he repeated Give themit to the menpeople thatand theylet maythem eat for thus says the Lord They shall eat and have some left |
| 4:44 |
SoHe he set it before them And they ate and had some left according to the word of the Lord |
| 5:1 |
Na′amanNaaman commander of the army of the king of SyriaAram was a great man with his master and in high favor with his master because by him the Lord had given victory to SyriaAram HeThe wasman though a mighty manwarrior ofsuffered valorfrom butleprosy he was a leper |
| 5:2 |
Now the SyriansArameans on one of their raids had carriedtaken off a littleyoung maidgirl captive from the land of Israel and she waitedserved onNaamans Na′amans wife |
| 5:3 |
She said to her mistress WouldIf thatonly my lord were with the prophet who is in Samar′iaSamaria He would cure him of his leprosy |
| 5:4 |
So Na′amanNaaman went in and told his lord Thusjust andwhat so spoke the maidengirl from the land of Israel had said |
| 5:5 |
And the king of SyriaAram said Go nowthen and I will send along a letter to the king of Israel SoHe he went taking with him ten talents of silver six thousand shekels of gold and ten festalsets of garments |
| 5:6 |
AndHe he brought the letter to the king of Israel which read When this letter reaches you know that I have sent to you Na′aman my servant Naaman that you may cure him of his leprosy |
| 5:7 |
AndWhen when the king of Israel read the letter he renttore his clothes and said Am I God to killgive anddeath toor makelife alive that this man sends word to me to cure a man of his leprosy OnlyJust considerlook and see how he is seekingtrying to pick a quarrel with me |
| 5:8 |
But when Eli′shaElisha the man of God heard that the king of Israel had renttorn his clothes he sent a message to the king saying Why have you renttorn your clothes Let him come now to me that he may knowlearn that there is a prophet in Israel |
| 5:9 |
So Na′amanNaaman came with his horses and chariots and halted at the doorentrance of Eli′shasElishas house |
| 5:10 |
AndElisha Eli′sha sent a messenger to him saying Go and wash in the Jordan seven times and your flesh shall be restored and you shall be clean |
| 5:11 |
But Na′amanNaaman wasbecame angry and went away saying Behold I thought that for me he would surely come out to me and stand and call on the name of the Lord his God and would wave his hand over the placespot and cure the leperleprosy |
| 5:12 |
Are not Aba′naAbana and Pharpar the rivers of Damascus better than all the waters of Israel Could I not wash in them and be clean SoHe he turned and went away in a rage |
| 5:13 |
But his servants cameapproached near and said to him MyFather father if the prophet had commanded you to do somesomething greatdifficult thing would you not have done it How much rathermore then when all he sayssaid to you was Wash and be clean |
| 5:14 |
So he went down and dippedimmersed himself seven times in the Jordan according to the word of the man of God; and his flesh was restored like the flesh of a littleyoung childboy and he was clean |
| 5:15 |
Then he returned to the man of God he and all his company; and he came and stood before him; and he said BeholdNow I know that there is no God in all the earth butexcept in Israel; soplease accept now a present from your servant |
| 5:16 |
But he said As the Lord lives whom I serve I will receiveaccept nonenothing AndHe he urged him to takeaccept it but he refused |
| 5:17 |
Then Na′amanNaaman said If not Iplease praylet youtwo letmule thereloads of earth be given to your servant two mules burden of earth; for henceforth your servant will notno longer offer burnt offering or sacrifice to any god butexcept the Lord |
| 5:18 |
InBut this matter may the Lord pardon your servant on one count: when my master goes into the house of Rimmon to worship there leaning on my arm and I bow myselfdown in the house of Rimmon when I do bow myselfdown in the house of Rimmon may the Lord pardon your servant inon this matterone count |
| 5:19 |
He said to him Go in peace But when Na′amanNaaman had gone from him a short distance |
| 5:20 |
Geha′ziGehazi the servant of Eli′shaElisha the man of God saidthought SeeMy my master has sparedlet thisthat Na′amanAramean theNaaman Syrianoff intoo lightly by not accepting from hishim hand what he broughtoffered As the Lord lives I will run after him and get something fromout of him |
| 5:21 |
So Geha′ziGehazi followedwent Na′amanafter AndNaaman whenWhen Na′amanNaaman saw somesomeone one running after him he alightedjumped down from the chariot to meet him and said Is everything all wellright |
| 5:22 |
AndHe hereplied saidYes Allbut ismy well My master has sent me to say ThereTwo members of a company of prophets have just now come to me from the hill country of E′phraim two young men of the sons of the prophetsEphraim; prayplease give them a talent of silver and two festalchanges garmentsof clothing |
| 5:23 |
AndNaaman Na′aman said BePlease pleased to accept two talents AndHe he urged him and tied up two talents of silver in two bags with two festalchanges garmentsof clothing and laidgave them uponto two of his servants; andwho they carried them beforein Geha′zifront of Gehazi |
| 5:24 |
AndWhen when he came to the hillcitadel he took themthe bags from theirthem hand and putstored them in the houseinside; and he sentdismissed the men away and they departed left |
| 5:25 |
He went in and stood before his master; and Eli′shaElisha said to him Where have you been Geha′ziGehazi AndHe heanswered said Your servant wenthas nowherenot gone anywhere at all |
| 5:26 |
But he said to him Did I not go with you in spirit when thesomeone manleft turned from his chariot to meet you WasIs itthis a time to accept money and garmentsto accept clothing olive orchards and vineyards sheep and oxen menservantsand male and maidservantsfemale slaves |
| 5:27 |
Therefore the leprosy of Na′amanNaaman shall cleavecling to you and to your descendants forforever ever So he wentleft out from his presence aleprous leper as white as snow |
| 6:1 |
Now the sonscompany of the prophets said to Eli′shaElisha SeeAs you see the place where we dwelllive under your charge is too small for us |
| 6:2 |
Let us go to the Jordan and eachlet of us getcollect logs there aone logfor andeach letof us makeand build a place there for us to dwelllive thereHe Andanswered heDo answeredso Go |
| 6:3 |
Then one of them said BePlease pleasedcome to go with your servants And he answered I will go |
| 6:4 |
So he went with them AndWhen when they came to the Jordan they cut down trees |
| 6:5 |
But as one was felling a log his axeax head fell into the water; and he cried out Alas my master It was borrowed |
| 6:7 |
AndHe he said TakePick it up So he reached out his hand and took it |
| 6:8 |
Once when the king of SyriaAram was warringat againstwar with Israel he took counsel with his servantsofficers sayingHe said At such and such a place shall be my camp |
| 6:9 |
But the man of God sent word to the king of Israel BewareTake thatcare younot doto not pass this place forbecause the SyriansArameans are going down there |
| 6:10 |
AndThe the king of Israel sent word to the place of which the man of God toldspoke himMore Thusthan once or twice he usedwarned tosuch warna himplace so that heit savedwas himselfon therethe more than once or twicealert |
| 6:11 |
AndThe the mind of the king of SyriaAram was greatly troubledperturbed because of this thing; and he called his servantsofficers and said to them WillNow youtell not show me who ofamong us issides forwith the king of Israel |
| 6:12 |
AndThen one of his servantsofficers said NoneNo one my lord O king; butIt Eli′shais Elisha the prophet who is in Israel who tells the king of Israel the words that you speak in your bedchamber |
| 6:13 |
AndHe he said Go and seefind where he is; that I maywill send and seize him ItHe was told himHe Behold he is in Dothan |
| 6:14 |
So he sent there horses and chariots there and a great army; and they came by night and surrounded the city |
| 6:15 |
When thean servantattendant of the man of God rose early in the morning and went out behold an army with horses and chariots was roundall aboutaround the city AndHis the servant said Alas my master What shall we do |
| 6:16 |
He saidreplied FearDo not be afraid for thosethere who are more with us are more than thosethere who are with them |
| 6:17 |
Then Eli′shaElisha prayed: and said O Lord Iplease pray thee open his eyes that he may see So the Lord opened the eyes of the youngservant man and he saw; and behold the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire roundall aboutaround Eli′shaElisha |
| 6:18 |
AndWhen when the SyriansArameans came down against him Eli′shaElisha prayed to the Lord and said Strike this people Iplease pray thee with blindness So he struck them with blindness inas accordanceElisha withhad theasked prayer of Eli′sha |
| 6:19 |
AndElisha Eli′sha said to them This is not the way and this is not the city; follow me and I will bring you to the man whom you seek And he led them to Samar′iaSamaria |
| 6:20 |
As soon as they entered Samar′iaSamaria Eli′shaElisha said O Lord open the eyes of these men so that they may see SoThe the Lord opened their eyes and they saw; andthat lo they were ininside theSamaria midst of Samar′ia |
| 6:21 |
When the king of Israel saw them he said to Eli′shaElisha MyFather father shall I slaykill them Shall I slaykill them |
| 6:22 |
He answered YouNo shallDid notyou slaycapture themwith Wouldyour yousword slayand your bow those whom you havewant takento captivekill with your sword and with your bow Set breadfood and water before them so that they may eat and drink; and let them go to their master |
| 6:23 |
So he prepared for them a great feast; andafter when they hadate eaten and drunkdrank he sent them awayon their way and they went to their master And the SyriansArameans came no morelonger oncame raidsraiding into the land of Israel |
| 6:24 |
AfterwardSome time later King Ben ha′dadhadad king of SyriaAram mustered his entire army; andhe wentmarched upagainst Samaria and besiegedlaid Samar′iasiege to it |
| 6:25 |
AndAs therethe wassiege acontinued great famine in Samar′iaSamaria asbecame theyso besiegedgreat itthat untila andonkeys asss head was sold for eighty shekels of silver and theone fourth part of a kab of doves dung for five shekels of silver |
| 6:26 |
Now as the king of Israel was passingwalking byon upon the city wall a woman cried out to him saying Help my lord O king |
| 6:27 |
AndHe he said IfNo Let the Lord will not help you whenceHow shallcan I help you From the threshing floor or from the wine press |
| 6:28 |
AndBut then the king asked her What is your troublecomplaint She answered This woman said to me Give up your son; that we maywill eat him today and we will eat my son tomorrow |
| 6:29 |
So we boiledcooked my son and ate him AndThe on the next day I said to her Give up your son thatand we maywill eat him; butBut she has hidden her son |
| 6:30 |
When the king heard the words of the woman he renttore his clothes—now since he was passingwalking byon upon the city wall—and the people lookedcould andsee beholdthat he had sackcloth beneathon upon his body underneath— |
| 6:31 |
and he said MaySo may God do so to me and more also if the head of Eli′shaElisha the son of Shaphat remainsstays on his shoulders today |
| 6:32 |
Eli′shaSo he dispatched a man from his presence Now Elisha was sitting in his house and the elders were sitting with him NowBefore the king had dispatched a man from his presence; but before the messenger arrived Eli′shaElisha said to the elders DoAre you seeaware howthat this murderer has sent someone to take off my head LookWhen when the messenger comes see that you shut the door and hold theit doorclosed fast against him Is not the sound of his masters feet behind him |
| 6:33 |
AndWhile while he was still speaking with them the king came down to him and said This trouble is from the Lord Why should I waithope forin the Lord any longer |
| 7:1 |
But Eli′shaElisha said Hear the word of the Lord: thus says the Lord Tomorrow about this time a measure of finechoice meal shall be sold for a shekel and two measures of barley for a shekel at the gate of Samar′iaSamaria |
| 7:2 |
Then the captain on whose hand the king leaned said to the man of God IfEven if the Lord himselfwere shouldto make windows in heaventhe sky could thissuch a thing behappen But he said You shall see it with your own eyes but you shall not eat offrom it |
| 7:3 |
Now there were four leprous men whooutside were lepers at the entrancecity to the gate; andwho they said to one another Why doshould we sit here tilluntil we die |
| 7:4 |
If we say Let us enter the city the famine is in the city and we shall die there; andbut if we sit here we dieshall also Sodie nowTherefore come let us godesert over to the Aramean camp of the Syrians; if they spare our lives we shall live; and if they kill us we shall but die |
| 7:5 |
So they arose at twilight to go to the Aramean camp of the Syrians; but when they came to the edge of the Aramean camp of the Syrians behold there was no one there at all |
| 7:6 |
For the Lord had madecaused the Aramean army ofto the Syrians hear the sound of chariots and of horses the sound of a great army so that they said to one another BeholdThe the king of Israel has hired against us the kings of the Hittites and the kings of Egypt to comefight uponagainst us |
| 7:7 |
So they fled away in the twilight and forsookabandoned their tents their horses and their assesdonkeys leaving the camp just as it was and fled for their lives |
| 7:8 |
AndWhen when these lepersleprous camemen had come to the edge of the camp they went into a tent and ate and drank and they carried off silver and gold and clothing and went and hid them; thenThen they came back and entered another tent and carried off things from it and went and hid them |
| 7:9 |
Then they said to one another WeWhat we are not doing rightis wrong This day is a day of good news; if we are silent and wait until the morning light punishmentwe will overtakebe usfound guilty; now therefore come let us go and tell the kings household |
| 7:10 |
So they came and called to the gatekeepers of the city and told them We camewent to the Aramean camp ofbut the Syrians and behold there was no one to be seen or heard there nothing but the horses tied and the assesdonkeys tied and the tents as they were |
| 7:11 |
Then the gatekeepers called out and proclaimed it wasto told within the kings household |
| 7:12 |
AndThe the king rosegot up in the night and said to his servants I will tell you what the SyriansArameans have prepared against us They know that we are hungrystarving; thereforeso they have goneleft out of the camp to hide themselves in the open country thinking When they come out of the city we shall take them alive and get into the city |
| 7:13 |
AndOne one of his servants said Let some men take five of the remaining horses seeingsince that those who are left here will faresuffer likethe fate of the whole multitude of Israel that have perished already perished; let us send and seefind out |
| 7:14 |
So they took two mounted men and the king sent them after the Aramean army of the Syrians saying Go and seefind out |
| 7:15 |
So they went after them as far as the Jordan; andthe lowhole all the way was littered with garments and equipment whichthat the SyriansArameans had thrown away in their haste AndSo the messengers returned and told the king |
| 7:16 |
Then the people went out and plundered the camp of the SyriansArameans So a measure of finechoice meal was sold for a shekel and two measures of barley for a shekel according to the word of the Lord |
| 7:17 |
Now the king had appointed the captain on whose hand he leaned to have charge of the gate; and the people trodtrampled upon him to death in the gate sojust that he died as the man of God had said when the king came down to him |
| 7:18 |
For when the man of God had said to the king Two measures of barley shall be sold for a shekel and a measure of finechoice meal for a shekel about this time tomorrow in the gate of Samar′iaSamaria |
| 7:19 |
the captain had answered the man of God IfEven if the Lord himselfwere shouldto make windows in heaventhe sky could such a thing behappen And he had saidanswered You shall see it with your own eyes but you shall not eat offrom it |
| 7:20 |
AndIt sodid itindeed happenedhappen to him; for the people trodtrampled upon him to death in the gate and he died |
| 8:1 |
Now Eli′shaElisha had said to the woman whose son he had restored to life AriseGet up and departgo with your household and sojournsettle wherever you can; for the Lord has called for a famine and it will come uponon the land for seven years |
| 8:2 |
So the woman arosegot up and did according to the word of the man of God; she went with her household and sojournedsettled in the land of the Philistines seven years |
| 8:3 |
AndAt at the end of the seven years when the woman returned from the land of the Philistines she wentset forthout to appeal to the king for her house and her land |
| 8:4 |
Now the king was talking with Geha′ziGehazi the servant of the man of God saying Tell me all the great things that Eli′shaElisha has done |
| 8:5 |
AndWhile while he was telling the king how Eli′shaElisha had restored thea dead person to life behold the woman whose son he had restored to life appealed to the king for her house and her land AndGehazi Geha′zi said My lord O king here is the woman and here is her son whom Eli′shaElisha restored to life |
| 8:6 |
AndWhen when the king askedquestioned the woman she told him So the king appointed an official for her saying Restore all that was hers together with all the producerevenue of the fields from the day that she left the land until now |
| 8:7 |
NowElisha Eli′shawent came to Damascus Benwhile ha′dadKing theBen kinghadad of SyriaAram was sick;ill andWhen when it was told him The man of God has come here |
| 8:8 |
the king said to Haz′aelHazael Take a present with you and go to meet the man of God andInquire inquire of the Lord through him sayingwhether Shall I shall recover from this sicknessillness |
| 8:9 |
So Haz′aelHazael went to meet him andtaking took a present with him all kinds of goods of Damascus forty camel loads When he cameentered and stood before him he said Your son King Ben ha′dadhadad king of SyriaAram has sent me to you saying Shall I recover from this sicknessillness |
| 8:10 |
AndElisha Eli′sha said to him Go say to him You shall certainly recover; but the Lord has shown me that he shall certainly die |
| 8:11 |
AndHe he fixed his gaze and stared at him until he was ashamed AndThen the man of God wept |
| 8:12 |
AndHazael Haz′aelasked said Why does my lord weep He answered Because I know the evil that you will do to the people of Israel; you will set on fire their fortresses andon fire you will slaykill their young men with the sword and dash in pieces their little ones and rip up their pregnant women with child |
| 8:13 |
AndHazael Haz′ael said What is your servant who is but a mere dog that he should do this great thing Eli′shaElisha answered The Lord has shown me that you are to be king over SyriaAram |
| 8:14 |
Then he departedleft fromElisha Eli′sha and camewent to his master Ben hadad who said to him What did Eli′shaElisha say to you And he answered He told me that you would certainly recover |
| 8:15 |
But on the morrownext day he took the coverletbed cover and dipped it in water and spread it over histhe kings face tilluntil he died And Haz′aelHazael becamesucceeded king in his steadhim |
| 8:16 |
In the fifth year of King Joram the son of Ahab king of Israel Jeho′ramJehoram the son of Jehosh′aphatKing kingJehoshaphat of Judah began to reign |
| 8:18 |
AndHe he walked in the way of the kings of Israel as the house of Ahab had done for the daughter of Ahab was his wife AndHe he did what was evil in the sight of the Lord |
| 8:19 |
Yet the Lord would not destroy Judah for the sake of David his servant David since he had promised to give a lamp to him and to his sonsdescendants for everforever |
| 8:20 |
In his days Edom revolted fromagainst the rule of Judah and set up a king of their own |
| 8:21 |
Then Joram passedcrossed over to Za′irZair with all his chariots andHe roseset out by night and heattacked the Edomites and histheir chariot commanders smote the E′domites who had surrounded him; but his army fled home |
| 8:22 |
So Edom revoltedhas frombeen in revolt against the rule of Judah to this day Then Libnah also revolted at the same time |
| 8:23 |
Now the rest of the acts of Joram and all that he did are they not written in the Book of the ChroniclesAnnals of the Kings of Judah |
| 8:24 |
So Joram slept with his fathersancestors and was buried with histhem fathers in the city of David; and Ahazi′ah his son reignedAhaziah insucceeded his steadhim |
| 8:25 |
In the twelfth year of King Joram the son of Ahab king of Israel Ahazi′ahAhaziah the son of Jeho′ramKing kingJehoram of Judah began to reign |
| 8:26 |
Ahazi′ahAhaziah was twenty two years old when he began to reign; and he reigned one year in Jerusalem His mothers name was Athali′ah;Athaliah she was a granddaughter of King Omri king of Israel |
| 8:27 |
He also walked in the way of the house of Ahab anddoing did what was evil in the sight of the Lord as the house of Ahab had done for he was son in law to the house of Ahab |
| 8:28 |
He went with Joram the son of Ahab to makewage war against Haz′aelKing kingHazael of SyriaAram at Ramoth gilead where the SyriansArameans wounded Joram |
| 8:29 |
And King Joram returned to be healed in Jezreel of the wounds whichthat the SyriansArameans had giveninflicted on him at Ramah when he fought against Haz′aelKing kingHazael of SyriaAram AndKing Ahazi′ahAhaziah the son of Jeho′ramJehoram king of Judah went down to see Joram the son of Ahab in Jezreel because he was sickwounded |
| 9:1 |
Then Eli′sha the prophet Elisha called onea member of the sonscompany of the prophets and said to him Gird up your loins; and take this flask of oil in your hand and go to Ramoth gilead |
| 9:2 |
AndWhen when you arrive look there for Jehu the son of Jehosh′aphatJehoshaphat son of Nimshi; and go in and bidget him riseto fromleave among his fellowscompanions and leadtake him tointo an inner chamber |
| 9:3 |
Then take the flask of oil and pour it on his head and say Thus says the Lord: I anoint you king over Israel Then open the door and flee; do not tarrylinger |
| 9:4 |
So the young man the young prophet went to Ramoth gilead |
| 9:5 |
AndHe whenarrived hewhile came behold the commanders of the army were in council; and he saidannounced I have ana errandmessage tofor you O commander AndFor Jehuwhich saidone To which of us allasked AndJehu heFor said To you O commander |
| 9:6 |
So heJehu arosegot up and went into the houseinside; and the young man poured the oil on his head saying to him Thus says the Lord the God of Israel: I anoint you king over the people of the Lord over Israel |
| 9:7 |
AndYou you shall strike down the house of Ahab your master Ahab so that I may avenge on Jez′ebelJezebel the blood of my servants the prophets and the blood of all the servants of the Lord |
| 9:8 |
For the whole house of Ahab shall perish; and I will cut off from Ahab every male bond or free in Israel |
| 9:9 |
And I will make the house of Ahab like the house of Jerobo′amJeroboam the son of Nebat and like the house of Ba′ashaBaasha the son of Ahi′jahAhijah |
| 9:10 |
AndThe the dogs shall eat Jez′ebelJezebel in the territory of Jezreel and noneno one shall bury her Then he opened the door and fled |
| 9:11 |
When Jehu came outback to thehis servantsmasters ofofficers his master they said to him Is everything all wellright Why did thisthat madmadman fellow come to you AndHe heanswered said to them You know the fellowsort and hishow talkthey babble |
| 9:12 |
AndThey they said ThatLiar isCome noton true; tell us nowSo And he said ThusThis andis sojust what he spokesaid to me: saying Thus says the Lord I anoint you king over Israel |
| 9:13 |
Then inhurriedly hastethey everyall man of them took histheir garmentcloaks and putspread itthem underfor him on the bare steps; and they blew the trumpet and proclaimed Jehu is king |
| 9:14 |
Thus Jehu the son of Jehosh′aphatJehoshaphat the son of Nimshi conspired against Joram Now Joram with all Israel had been on guard at Ramoth gilead against Haz′aelKing kingHazael of SyriaAram; |
| 9:15 |
but King Joram had returned to be healed in Jezreel of the wounds whichthat the SyriansArameans had giveninflicted on him when he fought withagainst Haz′aelKing kingHazael of SyriaAram So Jehu said If this is your mindwish then let no one slip out of the city to go and tell the news in Jezreel |
| 9:16 |
Then Jehu mounted his chariot and went to Jezreel forwhere Joram laywas therelying Andill Ahazi′ahKing kingAhaziah of Judah had come down to visit Joram |
| 9:17 |
NowIn Jezreel the watchmansentinel was standing on the tower in Jezreel and he spied the company of Jehu asarriving he came and said I see a company And Joram said Take a horseman; and send him to meet them and let him say Is it peace |
| 9:18 |
So athe manhorseman on horseback went to meet him; andhe said Thus says the king Is it peace And Jehu saidresponded What have you to do with peace TurnFall roundin and ride behind me AndThe thesentinel watchman reported saying The messenger reached them but he is not coming back |
| 9:19 |
Then he sent out a second horseman who came to them and said Thus says the king has said Is it peace And Jehu answered What have you to do with peace TurnFall roundin and ride behind me |
| 9:20 |
Again the watchmansentinel reported He reached them but he is not coming back AndIt thelooks driving is like the driving of Jehu the son of Nimshi; for he drives furiouslylike a maniac |
| 9:21 |
Joram said MakeGet ready And they madegot ready his chariot ready Then King Joram king of Israel and Ahazi′ahKing kingAhaziah of Judah set out each in his chariot and went to meet Jehu; andthey met him at the property of Naboth the Jezreelite |
| 9:22 |
AndWhen when Joram saw Jehu he said Is it peace Jehu He answered What peace can there be so long as the harlotriesmany whoredoms and the sorceries of your mother Jez′ebelJezebel arecontinue so many |
| 9:23 |
Then Joram reined about and fled saying to Ahazi′ahAhaziah TreacheryTreason OAhaziah Ahazi′ah |
| 9:24 |
And Jehu drew his bow with all his full strength and shot Joram between the shoulders so that the arrow pierced his heart; and he sank in his chariot |
| 9:25 |
Jehu said to Bidkar his aide TakeBidkar Lift him upout and castthrow him on the plot of ground belonging to Naboth the Jezreelite; for remember when you and I rode side by side behind Ahab his father Ahab how the Lord uttered this oracle against him: |
| 9:26 |
AsFor surely as I saw yesterday the blood of Naboth and for the blood of his sons—children that I saw yesterday says the Lord— I swear I will requiterepay you on this very plot of ground Now therefore takelift him upout and castthrow him on the plot of ground in accordance with the word of the Lord |
| 9:27 |
When Ahazi′ahKing theAhaziah king of Judah saw this he fled in the direction of Beth haggan And Jehu pursued him andsaying said Shoot him also; andAnd they shot him in the chariot at the ascent ofto Gur which is by Ibleam AndThen he fled to Megid′doMegiddo and died there |
| 9:28 |
His servantsofficers carried him in a chariot to Jerusalem and buried him in his tomb with his fathersancestors in the city of David |
| 9:29 |
In the eleventh year of Joram the son of Ahab Ahazi′ahAhaziah began to reign over Judah |
| 9:30 |
When Jehu came to Jezreel Jez′ebelJezebel heard of it; and she painted her eyes and adorned her head and looked out of the window |
| 9:31 |
AndAs as Jehu entered the gate she said Is it peace you Zimri murderer of your master |
| 9:32 |
AndHe helooked lifted up his face to the window and said Who is on my side Who Two or three eunuchs looked out at him |
| 9:33 |
He said Throw her down So they threw her down; and some of her blood spattered on the wall and on the horses andwhich they trampled on her |
| 9:34 |
Then he went in and ate and drank; and he said See now to thisthat cursed woman and bury her; for she is a kings daughter |
| 9:36 |
When they came back and told him he said This is the word of the Lord which he spoke by his servant Eli′jahElijah the Tishbite In the territory of Jezreel the dogs shall eat the flesh of Jez′ebelJezebel; |
| 9:37 |
and the corpse of Jez′ebelJezebel shall be aslike dung uponon the face of the field in the territory of Jezreel so that no one can say This is Jez′ebelJezebel |
| 10:1 |
Now Ahab had seventy sons in Samar′iaSamaria So Jehu wrote letters and sent them to Samar′iaSamaria to the rulers of theJezreel city to the elders and to the guardians of the sons of Ahab saying |
| 10:2 |
NowSince then as soon as this letter comes to you seeing your masters sons are with you and thereyou arehave withat youyour disposal chariots and horses a fortified citiescity also and weapons |
| 10:3 |
select the bestson and fittest of your mastersmaster sonswho andis the best qualified set him on his fathers throne and fight for your masters house |
| 10:4 |
But they were exceedinglyutterly afraidterrified and said BeholdLook the two kings could not standwithstand before him; how then can we stand |
| 10:5 |
So hethe whosteward wasof over the palace and hethe whogovernor wasof over the city togetheralong with the elders and the guardians sent word to Jehu: saying We are your servants; and we will do allanything that you bidsay us We will not make anyanyone one king; do whatever isyou goodthink inright your eyes |
| 10:6 |
Then he wrote to them a second letter saying If you are on my side and if you are ready to obey me take the heads of your masters sons and come to me at Jezreel tomorrow at this time Now the kings sons seventy persons were with the greatleaders men of the city who were bringingcharged themwith uptheir upbringing |
| 10:7 |
AndWhen when the letter camereached to them they took the kings sons and slewkilled them seventy persons; andthey put their heads in baskets and sent them to him at Jezreel |
| 10:9 |
Then in the morning when he went out he stood and said to all the people You are innocent It was I who conspired against my master and slewkilled him; but who struck down all these |
| 10:10 |
Know then that there shall fall to the earth nothing of the word of the Lord which the Lord spoke concerning the house of Ahab; for the Lord has done what he said bythrough his servant Eli′jahElijah |
| 10:11 |
So Jehu slewkilled all thatwho remainedwere left of the house of Ahab in Jezreel all his greatleaders menclose and his familiar friends and his priests until he left him noneno remainingsurvivor |
| 10:12 |
Then he set out and went to Samar′iaSamaria On the way when he was at Beth eked of the Shepherds |
| 10:13 |
Jehu met therelatives kinsmen of Ahazi′ahKing kingAhaziah of Judah and he said Who are you AndThey they answered We are thekin kinsmen of Ahazi′ahAhaziah; and we camehave come down to visit the royal princes and the sons of the queen mother |
| 10:14 |
He said Take them alive AndThey they took them alive and slewslaughtered them at the pit of Beth eked forty two personsin andall; he spared none of them |
| 10:15 |
AndWhen when he departedleft from there he met Jehon′adabJehonadab the son of Rechab coming to meet him; and he greeted him and said to him Is your heart as true to mymine heart as mine is to yours AndJehonadab Jehon′adab answered It is Jehu said If it is give me your hand So he gave him his hand And Jehu took him up with him into the chariot |
| 10:16 |
AndHe he said Come with me and see my zeal for the Lord So he had him ride in his chariot |
| 10:17 |
AndWhen when he came to Samar′iaSamaria he slewkilled all thatwho remainedwere left to Ahab in Samar′iaSamaria tilluntil he had wiped them out according to the word of the Lord whichthat he spoke to Eli′jahElijah |
| 10:18 |
Then Jehu assembled all the people and said to them Ahab servedoffered Ba′alBaal asmall littleservice; but Jehu will serveoffer him much more |
| 10:19 |
Now therefore callsummon to me all the prophets of Ba′alBaal all his worshipers and all his priests; let none be missing for I have a great sacrifice to offer to Ba′alBaal; whoever is missing shall not live But Jehu didwas itacting with cunning in order to destroy the worshipers of Ba′alBaal |
| 10:20 |
And Jehu ordereddecreed Sanctify a solemn assembly for Ba′alBaal So they proclaimed it |
| 10:21 |
And Jehu sent word throughout all Israel; and all the worshipers of Ba′alBaal came so that there was notno aone man left who did not come AndThey they entered the housetemple of Ba′alBaal anduntil the housetemple of Ba′alBaal was filled from onewall end to thewall other |
| 10:22 |
He said to himthe whokeeper was in charge of the wardrobe Bring out the vestments for all the worshipers of Ba′alBaal So he brought out the vestments for them |
| 10:23 |
Then Jehu wententered into the housetemple of Ba′alBaal with Jehon′adabJehonadab the son of Rechab; and he said to the worshipers of Ba′alBaal Search and see that there is no servantworshiper of the Lord here among you but only the worshipers of Ba′alBaal |
| 10:24 |
Then hethey wentproceeded in to offer sacrifices and burnt offerings Now Jehu had stationed eighty men outside andsaying saidWhoever The man who allows any of those to escape whom I givedeliver into your hands to escape shall forfeit his life |
| 10:25 |
SoAs as soon as he had madefinished anpresenting end of offering the burnt offering Jehu said to the guardguards and to the officers GoCome in and slaykill them; let notno aone man escape So when they put them to the sword theThe guardguards and the officers castthrew them out and then went into the innercitadel room of the housetemple of Ba′alBaal |
| 10:26 |
andThey they brought out the pillar that was in the housetemple of Ba′alBaal and burned it |
| 10:27 |
AndThen they demolished the pillar of Ba′alBaal and demolisheddestroyed the housetemple of Ba′alBaal and made it a latrine to this day |
| 10:28 |
Thus Jehu wiped out Ba′alBaal from Israel |
| 10:29 |
But Jehu did not turn aside from the sins of Jerobo′amJeroboam the son of Nebat which he madecaused Israel to sin commit—the golden calves that were in Bethel and in Dan |
| 10:30 |
AndThe the Lord said to Jehu Because you have done well in carrying out what isI consider right and in accordance with all that was in my eyesheart and have donedealt towith the house of Ahab according to all that was in my heart your sons of the fourth generation shall sit on the throne of Israel |
| 10:31 |
But Jehu was not careful to walkfollow in the law of the Lord the God of Israel with all his heart; he did not turn from the sins of Jerobo′amJeroboam which he madecaused Israel to sincommit |
| 10:32 |
In those days the Lord began to cuttrim off parts of Israel Haz′aelHazael defeated them throughout the territory of Israel: |
| 10:33 |
from the Jordan eastward all the land of Gilead the Gadites and the Reubenites and the Manas′sitesManassites from Aro′erAroer which is by the valleyWadi of the Arnon that is Gilead and Bashan |
| 10:34 |
Now the rest of the acts of Jehu and all that he did and all his mightpower are they not written in the Book of the ChroniclesAnnals of the Kings of Israel |
| 10:35 |
So Jehu slept with his fathersancestors and they buried him in Samar′iaSamaria AndHis Jeho′ahaz his son reignedJehoahaz insucceeded hishim stead |
| 10:36 |
The time that Jehu reigned over Israel in Samar′iaSamaria was twenty eight years |
| 11:1 |
Now when Athali′ahAthaliah theAhaziahs mother of Ahazi′ah saw that her son was dead she aroseset andabout destroyedto destroy all the royal family |
| 11:2 |
But Jehosh′ebaJehosheba theKing Jorams daughter ofAhaziahs King Joram sister of Ahazi′ah took Jo′ashJoash the son of Ahazi′ahAhaziah and stole him away from among the kings sonschildren who were about to be slainkilled; and she put him and his nurse in a bedchamberbedroom Thus she hid him from Athali′ahAthaliah so that he was not slainkilled; |
| 11:3 |
and he remained with her six years hidhidden in the house of the Lord while Athali′ahAthaliah reigned over the land |
| 11:4 |
But in the seventh year Jehoi′adaJehoiada sentsummoned and brought the captains of the Carites and of the guards and had them come to him in the house of the Lord; andHe he made a covenant with them and put them under oath in the house of the Lord; andthen he showed them the kings son |
| 11:5 |
AndHe he commanded them This is thewhat thingyou thatare youto shall do: one third of you those who comego off duty on the sabbath and guard the kings house |
| 11:7 |
and theyour two divisions ofthat you which come on duty in force on the sabbath and guard the house of the Lord |
| 11:8 |
shall surround the king each with his weapons in his hand; and whoever approaches the ranks is to be slainkilled Be with the king whenin hehis goescomings out and when he comes ingoings |
| 11:9 |
The captains did according to all that Jehoi′ada the priest Jehoiada commanded; and each brought his men who were to go off duty on the sabbath with those who were to come on duty on the sabbath and came to Jehoi′ada the priest Jehoiada |

| 11:11 |
and the guards stood every man with his weapons in his hand from the south side of the house to the north side of the house around the altar and the house to guard the king on every side |
| 11:12 |
Then he brought out the kings son and put the crown uponon him and gave him the testimonycovenant; and they proclaimed him king and anointed him; and they clapped their hands and saidshouted Long live the king |
| 11:13 |
When Athali′ahAthaliah heard the noise of the guard and of the people she went into the house of the Lord to the people; |

and when she looked there was the king standing by the pillar according to the custom andwith the captains and the trumpeters beside the king and all the people of the land rejoicing and blowing trumpets AndAthaliah Athali′ahtore rent her clothes and cried Treason Treason |
| 11:15 |
Then Jehoi′ada the priest Jehoiada commanded the captains who were set over the army Bring her out between the ranks; and slaykill with the sword anyanyone one who follows her For the priest said Let her not be slainkilled in the house of the Lord |
| 11:16 |
So they laid hands on her; and she went through the horses entrance to the kings house and there she was slainput to death |
| 11:17 |
AndJehoiada Jehoi′ada made a covenant between the Lord and the king and people that they should be the Lords people; and also between the king and the people |
| 11:18 |
Then all the people of the land went to the house of Ba′alBaal and tore it down; his altars and his images they broke in pieces and they slewkilled Mattan the priest of Ba′alBaal before the altars AndThe the priest posted watchmenguards over the house of the Lord |

| 12:8 |
So the priests agreed that they shouldwould takeneither noaccept more money from the people andnor that they should not repair the house |
| 12:9 |
Then Jehoi′ada the priest Jehoiada took a chest andmade bored a hole in theits lid of it and set it beside the altar on the right side as one entered the house of the Lord; and the priests who guarded the threshold put in it all the money that was brought into the house of the Lord |

for that was given to the workmenworkers who were repairing the house of the Lord with it |
| 12:15 |
AndThey they did not ask an accounting from thethose men into whose hand they delivered the money to pay out to the workmenworkers for they dealt honestly |

| 13:4 |
ThenBut Jeho′ahazJehoahaz besoughtentreated the Lord and the Lord hearkenedheeded to him; for he saw the oppression of Israel how the king of SyriaAram oppressed them |
| 13:5 |
Therefore the Lord gave Israel a savior so that they escaped from the hand of the SyriansArameans; and the people of Israel dweltlived in their homes as formerly |

| 17:3 |
AgainstKing himShalmaneser of Assyria came up Shalmane′seragainst king of Assyriahim; andHoshea Hoshe′a became his vassal and paid him tribute |
| 17:4 |
But the king of Assyria found treachery in Hoshe′aHoshea; for he had sent messengers to King So king of Egypt and offered no tribute to the king of Assyria as he had done year by year; therefore the king of Assyria shutconfined him up and boundimprisoned him in prison |
| 17:5 |
Then the king of Assyria invaded all the land and came to Samar′iaSamaria; and for three years he besieged it |
| 17:6 |
In the ninth year of Hoshe′aHoshea the king of Assyria captured Samar′iaSamaria; and he carried the Israelites away to Assyria andHe placed them in Halah and on the Habor the river of Gozan and in the cities of the Medes |
| 17:7 |
AndThis thisoccurred was so because the people of Israel had sinned against the Lord their God who had brought them up out of the land of Egypt from under the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt andThey had fearedworshiped other gods |
| 17:8 |
and walked in the customs of the nations whom the Lord drove out before the people of Israel and in the customs whichthat the kings of Israel had introduced |
| 17:9 |
AndThe the people of Israel secretly did secretlythings that were not right against the Lord their God things that were not right They built for themselves high places at all their towns from watchtower to fortified city; |
| 17:10 |
they set up for themselves pillars and Ashe′rimsacred poles on every high hill and under every green tree; |
| 17:11 |
and there they burnedmade incenseofferings on all the high places as the nations did whom the Lord carried away before them AndThey they did wicked things provoking the Lord to anger; |
| 17:12 |
and they served idols of which the Lord had said to them You shall not do this |
| 17:13 |
Yet the Lord warned Israel and Judah by every prophet and every seer saying Turn from your evil ways and keep my commandments and my statutes in accordance with all the law whichthat I commanded your fathersancestors and whichthat I sent to you by my servants the prophets |
| 17:14 |
ButThey they would not listen but were stubborn as their fathersancestors had been who did not believe in the Lord their God |
| 17:15 |
They despised his statutes and his covenant that he made with their fathersancestors and the warnings whichthat he gave them They went after false idols and became false; and they followed the nations that were roundaround about them concerning whom the Lord had commanded them that they should not do likeas themthey did |
| 17:16 |
AndThey theyrejected forsook all the commandments of the Lord their God and made for themselves moltencast images of two calves; and they made ana Ashe′rahsacred andpole worshiped all the host of heaven and served Ba′alBaal |
| 17:17 |
AndThey theymade burned their sons and their daughters aspass offeringsthrough andfire; they used divination and sorceryaugury; and they sold themselves to do evil in the sight of the Lord provoking him to anger |
| 17:18 |
Therefore the Lord was very angry with Israel and removed them out of his sight; none was left but the tribe of Judah onlyalone |
| 17:19 |
Judah also did not keep the commandments of the Lord their God but walked in the customs whichthat Israel had introduced |
| 17:20 |
AndThe the Lord rejected all the descendants of Israel; andhe afflictedpunished them and gave them into the hand of spoilersplunderers until he had castbanished them outfrom of his sightpresence |
| 17:21 |
When he had torn Israel from the house of David they made Jerobo′amJeroboam the son of Nebat king AndJeroboam Jerobo′am drove Israel from following the Lord and made them commit great sin |
| 17:22 |
The people of Israel walkedcontinued in all the sins whichthat Jerobo′amJeroboam didcommitted; they did not depart from them |
| 17:23 |
until the Lord removed Israel out of his sight as he had spokenforetold bythrough all his servants the prophets So Israel was exiled from their own land to Assyria until this day |
| 17:24 |
AndThe the king of Assyria brought people from Babylon Cuthah Avva Hamath and Sepharva′imSepharvaim and placed them in the cities of Samar′iaSamaria insteadin place of the people of Israel; and they took possession of Samar′iaSamaria and dweltsettled in its cities |
| 17:25 |
AndWhen atthey thefirst beginningsettled of their dwelling there they did not fearworship the Lord; therefore the Lord sent lions among them which killed some of them |
| 17:26 |
So the king of Assyria was told The nations whichthat you have carried away and placed in the cities of Samar′iaSamaria do not know the law of the god of the land; therefore he has sent lions among them; and behold they are killing them because they do not know the law of the god of the land |
| 17:27 |
Then the king of Assyria commanded Send there one of the priests whom you carried away thencefrom there; and let him go and dwelllive there and teach them the law of the god of the land |
| 17:28 |
So one of the priests whom they had carried away from Samar′iaSamaria came and dweltlived in Bethel; andhe taught them how they should fearworship the Lord |
| 17:29 |
But every nation still made gods of its own and put them in the shrines of the high places whichthat the Samaritanspeople of Samaria had made every nation in the cities in which they dweltlived; |
| 17:30 |
the menpeople of Babylon made Suc′cothSuccoth be′nothbenoth the menpeople of Cuth made Nergal the menpeople of Hamath made Ashi′maAshima; |
| 17:31 |
and the Av′vitesAvvites made Nibhaz and Tartak; and the Sephar′vitesSepharvites burned their children in the fire to Adram′melechAdrammelech and Anam′melechAnammelech the gods of Sepharva′imSepharvaim |
| 17:32 |
They also fearedworshiped the Lord and appointed from among themselves all sorts of people as priests of the high places who sacrificed for them in the shrines of the high places |
| 17:33 |
So they fearedworshiped the Lord but also served their own gods after the manner of the nations from among whom they had been carried away |
| 17:34 |
To this day they docontinue according to thepractice their former mannercustoms They do not fearworship the Lord and they do not follow the statutes or the ordinances or the law or the commandment whichthat the Lord commanded the children of Jacob whom he named Israel |
| 17:35 |
The Lord had made a covenant with them and commanded them You shall not fearworship other gods or bow yourselves to them or serve them or sacrifice to them; |
| 17:36 |
but you shall fearworship the Lord who brought you out of the land of Egypt with great power and with an outstretched arm; you shall bow yourselves to him and to him you shall sacrifice |
| 17:37 |
AndThe the statutes and the ordinances and the law and the commandment whichthat he wrote for you you shall always be careful to doobserve You shall not fearworship other gods; |
| 17:38 |
and you shall not forget the covenant that I have made with you You shall not fearworship other gods |
| 17:39 |
but you shall fearworship the Lord your God; and he will deliver you out of the hand of all your enemies |
| 17:40 |
HoweverThey they would not listen however but they didcontinued according to practice their former mannercustom |
| 17:41 |
So these nations fearedworshiped the Lord andbut also served their gravencarved images; to this day their children likewise and their childrens children—as theircontinue fathersto diddo soas theytheir doancestors to this daydid |
| 18:1 |
In the third year of Hoshe′aKing Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel Hezeki′ahHezekiah the son of King Ahaz king of Judah began to reign |
| 18:2 |
He was twenty five years old when he began to reign; and he reigned twenty nine years in Jerusalem His mothers name was Abi the daughter of Zechari′ahZechariah |
| 18:3 |
AndHe he did what was right in the eyessight of the Lord accordingjust toas allhis thatancestor David his father had done |
| 18:4 |
He removed the high places and broke down the pillars and cut down the Ashe′rahsacred Andpole heHe broke in pieces the bronze serpent that Moses had made for until those days the people of Israel had burnedmade incenseofferings to it; it was called Nehush′tanNehushtan |
| 18:5 |
He trusted in the Lord the God of Israel; so that there was noneno one like him among all the kings of Judah after him noror among those who were before him |
| 18:6 |
For he held fast to the Lord; he did not depart from following him but kept the commandments whichthat the Lord commanded Moses |
| 18:7 |
AndThe the Lord was with him; wherever he went forth he prospered He rebelled against the king of Assyria and would not serve him |
| 18:8 |
He smoteattacked the Philistines as far as Gaza and its territory from watchtower to fortified city |
| 18:9 |
In the fourth year of King Hezeki′ahHezekiah which was the seventh year of Hoshe′aKing Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel Shalmane′serKing kingShalmaneser of Assyria came up against Samar′iaSamaria and besieged it |
| 18:10 |
and at the end of three years he took it In the sixth year of Hezeki′ahHezekiah which was the ninth year of Hoshe′aKing kingHoshea of Israel Samar′iaSamaria was taken |
| 18:11 |
The king of Assyria carried the Israelites away to Assyria andsettled put them in Halah and on the Habor the river of Gozan and in the cities of the Medes |
| 18:12 |
because they did not obey the voice of the Lord their God but transgressed his covenant even —all that Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded; they neither listened nor obeyed |
| 18:13 |
In the fourteenth year of King Hezeki′ahHezekiah Sennach′eribKing kingSennacherib of Assyria came up against all the fortified cities of Judah and tookcaptured them |
| 18:14 |
AndKing Hezeki′ahHezekiah king of Judah sent to the king of Assyria at Lachish saying I have done wrong; withdraw from me; whatever you impose on me I will bear AndThe the king of Assyria requireddemanded of Hezeki′ahKing kingHezekiah of Judah three hundred talents of silver and thirty talents of gold |
| 18:15 |
AndHezekiah Hezeki′ah gave him all the silver that was found in the house of the Lord and in the treasuries of the kings house |
| 18:16 |
At that time Hezeki′ahHezekiah stripped the gold from the doors of the temple of the Lord and from the doorposts whichthat Hezeki′ahKing kingHezekiah of Judah had overlaid and gave it to the king of Assyria |
| 18:17 |
AndThe the king of Assyria sent the Tartan the Rab′sarisRabsaris and the Rab′shakehRabshakeh with a great army from Lachish to King Hezeki′ahHezekiah at Jerusalem AndThey they went up and came to Jerusalem When they arrived they came and stood by the conduit of the upper pool which is on the highway to the Fullers Field |
| 18:18 |
AndWhen when they called for the king there came out to them Eli′akimEliakim the son of Hilki′ahHilkiah who was overin charge of the householdpalace and Shebnah the secretary and Jo′ahJoah the son of Asaph the recorder |
| 18:19 |
AndThe theRabshakeh Rab′shakeh said to them Say to Hezeki′ahHezekiah: Thus says the great king the king of Assyria: On what do you restbase this confidence of yours |
| 18:21 |
BeholdSee you are relying now on Egypt that broken reed of a staff which will pierce the hand of anyanyone man who leans on it Such is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who rely on him |
| 18:22 |
But if you say to me We rely on the Lord our God is it not he whose high places and altars Hezeki′ahHezekiah has removed saying to Judah and to Jerusalem You shall worship before this altar in Jerusalem |
| 18:23 |
Come now make a wager with my master the king of Assyria: I will give you two thousand horses if you are able on your part to set riders uponon them |
| 18:26 |
Then Eli′akimEliakim the son of Hilki′ahHilkiah and Shebnah and Jo′ahJoah said to the Rab′shakehRabshakeh PrayPlease speak to your servants in the Aramaic language for we understand it; do not speak to us in the language of Judah within the hearing of the people who are on the wall |
| 18:27 |
But the Rab′shakehRabshakeh said to them Has my master sent me to speak these words to your master and to you and not to the menpeople sitting on the wall who are doomed with you to eat their own dung and to drink their own urine |
| 18:28 |
Then the Rab′shakehRabshakeh stood and called out in a loud voice in the language of Judah: Hear the word of the great king the king of Assyria |
| 18:29 |
Thus says the king: Do not let Hezeki′ahHezekiah deceive you for he will not be able to deliver you out of my hand |
| 18:30 |
Do not let Hezeki′ahHezekiah make you to rely on the Lord by saying The Lord will surely deliver us and this city will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria |
| 18:31 |
Do not listen to Hezeki′ahHezekiah; for thus says the king of Assyria: Make your peace with me and come out to me; then every one of you will eat offrom hisyour own vine and everyyour one of his own fig tree and every one of you will drink the water offrom hisyour own cistern; |
| 18:32 |
until I come and take you away to a land like your own land a land of grain and wine a land of bread and vineyards a land of olive treesoil and honey that you may live and not die AndDo do not listen to Hezeki′ahHezekiah when he misleads you by saying The Lord will deliver us |
| 18:33 |
Has any of the gods of the nations ever delivered hisits land out of the hand of the king of Assyria |
| 18:34 |
Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad Where are the gods of Sepharva′imSepharvaim Hena and Ivvah Have they delivered Samar′iaSamaria out of my hand |
| 18:37 |
Then Eli′akimEliakim the son of Hilki′ahHilkiah who was overin charge of the householdpalace and Shebna the secretary and Jo′ahJoah the son of Asaph the recorder came to Hezeki′ahHezekiah with their clothes renttorn and told him the words of the Rab′shakehRabshakeh |
| 19:1 |
When King Hezeki′ahHezekiah heard it he renttore his clothes and covered himself with sackcloth and went into the house of the Lord |
| 19:2 |
And he sent Eli′akimEliakim who was overin charge of the householdpalace and Shebna the secretary and the senior priests covered with sackcloth to the prophet Isaiah the son of Amoz |
| 19:3 |
They said to him Thus says Hezeki′ahHezekiah This day is a day of distress of rebuke and of disgrace; children have come to the birth and there is no strength to bring them forth |
| 19:4 |
It may be that the Lord your God heard all the words of the Rab′shakehRabshakeh whom his master the king of Assyria has sent to mock the living God and will rebuke the words whichthat the Lord your God has heard; therefore lift up your prayer for the remnant that is left |
| 19:5 |
When the servants of King Hezeki′ahHezekiah came to Isaiah |
| 19:7 |
Behold I myself will put a spirit in him so that he shall hear a rumor and return to his own land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land |
| 19:8 |
The Rab′shakehRabshakeh returned and found the king of Assyria fighting against Libnah; for he had heard that the king had left Lachish |
| 19:9 |
AndWhen when the king heard concerning Tirha′kahKing kingTirhakah of Ethiopia BeholdSee he has set out to fight against you he sent messengers again to Hezeki′ahHezekiah saying |
| 19:10 |
Thus shall you speak to Hezeki′ahKing kingHezekiah of Judah: Do not let your God on whom you rely deceive you by promising that Jerusalem will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria |
| 19:11 |
BeholdSee you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands destroying them utterly AndShall shall you be delivered |
| 19:12 |
Have the gods of the nations delivered them the nations whichthat my fatherspredecessors destroyed Gozan Haran Rezeph and the people of Eden who were in TelTelassar assar |
| 19:13 |
Where is the king of Hamath the king of Arpad the king of the city of Sepharva′imSepharvaim the king of Hena or the king of Ivvah |
| 19:14 |
Hezeki′ahHezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers and read it; andthen Hezeki′ahHezekiah went up to the house of the Lord and spread it before the Lord |
| 19:15 |
And Hezeki′ahHezekiah prayed before the Lord and said: O Lord the God of Israel who artare enthroned above the cherubim thouyou artare the God thouyou alone of all the kingdoms of the earth; thouyou hasthave made heaven and earth |
| 19:16 |
Incline thyyour ear O Lord and hear; open thyyour eyes O Lord and see; and hear the words of Sennach′eribSennacherib which he has sent to mock the living God |
| 19:17 |
OfTruly a truth O Lord the kings of Assyria have laid waste the nations and their lands |
| 19:18 |
and have casthurled their gods into the fire; forthough they were no gods but the work of menshuman hands —wood and stone;—and thereforeso they were destroyed |
| 19:19 |
So now O Lord our God save us I beseechpray theeyou from his hand so that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that thouyou O Lord artare God alone |
| 19:20 |
Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent to Hezeki′ahHezekiah saying Thus says the Lord the God of Israel: YourI have heard your prayer to me about Sennach′eribKing kingSennacherib of Assyria I have heard |
| 19:21 |
This is the word that the Lord has spoken concerning him: She despises you she scorns you— the virgin daughter of Zion; she wagstosses her head —behind you—your theback daughter of Jerusalem |
| 19:24 |
I dug wells and drank foreign waters and I dried up with the sole of my foot all the streams of Egypt |
| 19:25 |
Have you not heard that I determined it long ago I planned from days of old what now I bring to pass that you should turnmake fortified cities crash into heaps of ruins |
| 19:26 |
while their inhabitants shorn of strength are dismayed and confounded; andthey have become like plants of the field and like tender grass like grass on the housetops; blighted before it is grown |
| 19:27 |
But I know your sittingrising down and your sitting your going out and coming in and your raging against me |
| 19:28 |
Because you have raged against me and your arrogance has come intoto my ears I will put my hook in your nose and my bit in your mouth; and I will turn you back on the way by which you came |
| 19:29 |
And this shall be the sign for you: thisThis year you shall eat what grows of itself and in the second year what springs offrom the samethat; then in the third year sow and reap and plant vineyards and eat their fruit |
| 19:30 |
AndThe the surviving remnant of the house of Judah shall again take root downward and bear fruit upward; |
| 19:31 |
for outfrom of Jerusalem a remnant shall go forthout a remnant and outfrom of Mount Zion a band of survivors The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this |
| 19:32 |
Therefore thus says the Lord concerning the king of Assyria: He shall not come into this city or shoot an arrow there or come before it with a shield or cast up a siege moundramp against it |
| 19:33 |
By the way that he came by the same he shall return; and he shall not come into this city says the Lord |
| 19:35 |
AndThat thatvery night the angel of the Lord wentset forthout and slewstruck adown one hundred and eighty five thousand in the camp of the Assyrians; and when men arose early in the morning beholddawned thesethey were all dead bodies |
| 19:36 |
Then Sennach′eribKing kingSennacherib of Assyria departedleft and went home and dweltlived at Nin′evehNineveh |
| 19:37 |
AndAs as he was worshiping in the house of his god Nisroch his godsons Adram′melechAdrammelech and Share′zerSharezer hiskilled sons slew him with the sword and they escaped into the land of Ararat AndHis Esarhad′don his son reignedEsar inhaddon hissucceeded steadhim |
| 20:1 |
In those days Hezeki′ahHezekiah became sick and was at the point of death AndThe Isaiah the prophet theIsaiah son of Amoz came to him and said to him Thus says the Lord: Set your house in order; for you shall die; you shall not recover |
| 20:2 |
Then Hezeki′ahHezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed to the Lord: saying |
| 20:3 |
Remember now O Lord I beseechimplore theeyou how I have walked before theeyou in faithfulness and with a whole heart and have done what is good in thyyour sight AndHezekiah Hezeki′ah wept bitterly |
| 20:4 |
AndBefore before Isaiah had gone out of the middle court the word of the Lord came to him: |
| 20:5 |
Turn back and say to Hezeki′ahHezekiah the prince of my people Thus says the Lord the God of David your fatherancestor David: I have heard your prayer I have seen your tears; beholdindeed I will heal you; on the third day you shall go up to the house of the Lord |
| 20:6 |
And I will add fifteen years to your life I will deliver you and this city out of the hand of the king of Assyria; and I will defend this city for my own sake and for my servant Davids sake |
| 20:7 |
AndThen Isaiah said Bring a cakelump of figs AndLet let them take it and layapply it onto the boil so that he may recover |
| 20:8 |
AndHezekiah Hezeki′ah said to Isaiah What shall be the sign that the Lord will heal me and that I shall go up to the house of the Lord on the third day |
| 20:9 |
And Isaiah said This is the sign to you from the Lord that the Lord will do the thing that he has promised: shall the shadow gohas forwardnow advanced ten stepsintervals; orshall goit backretreat ten stepsintervals |
| 20:10 |
AndHezekiah Hezeki′ah answered It is annormal easy thing for the shadow to lengthen ten stepsintervals; rather let the shadow goretreat back ten stepsintervals |
| 20:11 |
AndThe prophet Isaiah the prophet cried to the Lord; and he brought the shadow back the ten stepsintervals by which the sun had declined on the dial of Ahaz |
| 20:12 |
At that time Mero′dachKing bal′adanMerodach thebaladan son of Bal′adanBaladan king of Babylon sent envoys with letters and a present to Hezeki′ah;Hezekiah for he had heard that Hezeki′ahHezekiah had been sick |
| 20:13 |
AndHezekiah Hezeki′ah welcomed them; and he showed them all his treasure house the silver the gold the spices the precious oil his armory all that was found in his storehouses; there was nothing in his house or in all his realm that Hezeki′ahHezekiah did not show them |
| 20:14 |
Then Isaiah the prophet Isaiah came to King Hezeki′ahHezekiah and said to him What did these men say AndFrom whencewhere did they come to you AndHezekiah Hezeki′ahanswered said They have come from a far country from Babylon |
| 20:15 |
He said What have they seen in your house AndHezekiah Hezeki′ah answered They have seen all that is in my house; there is nothing in my storehouses that I did not show them |
| 20:16 |
Then Isaiah said to Hezeki′ahHezekiah Hear the word of the Lord: |
| 20:17 |
BeholdDays the days are coming when all that is in your house and that which your fathersancestors have stored up tilluntil this day shall be carried to Babylon; nothing shall be left says the Lord |
| 20:18 |
AndSome some of your own sons who are born to you shall be taken away; and they shall be eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon |
| 20:19 |
Then Hezekiah said Hezeki′ah to Isaiah The word of the Lord whichthat you have spoken is good For he thought Why not if there will be peace and security in my days |
| 20:20 |
The rest of the deeds of Hezeki′ahHezekiah and all his mightpower and how he made the pool and the conduit and brought water into the city are they not written in the Book of the ChroniclesAnnals of the Kings of Judah |
| 20:21 |
AndHezekiah Hezeki′ah slept with his fathersancestors; and Manas′seh his son reignedManasseh insucceeded his steadhim |
| 21:1 |
Manas′sehManasseh was twelve years old when he began to reign; and he reigned fifty five years in Jerusalem His mothers name was Heph′zibahHephzibah |
| 21:2 |
AndHe he did what was evil in the sight of the Lord accordingfollowing to the abominable practices of the nations whomthat the Lord drove out before the people of Israel |
| 21:3 |
For he rebuilt the high places whichthat Hezeki′ah his father Hezekiah had destroyed; and he erected altars for Ba′alBaal and made ana Ashe′rahsacred pole as King Ahab king of Israel had done and worshiped all the host of heaven and served them |
| 21:4 |
AndHe he built altars in the house of the Lord of which the Lord had said In Jerusalem I will I put my name |
| 21:5 |
AndHe he built altars for all the host of heaven in the two courts of the house of the Lord |
| 21:6 |
AndHe hemade burned his son aspass anthrough offeringfire; andhe practiced soothsaying and augury and dealt with mediums and with wizards He did much evil in the sight of the Lord provoking him to anger |
| 21:7 |
AndThe thecarved graven image of Ashe′rahAsherah that he had made he set in the house of which the Lord said to David and to Solomon his son Solomon In this house and in Jerusalem which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel I will put my name for everforever; |
| 21:8 |
and I will not cause the feet of Israel to wander any more out of the land whichthat I gave to their fathersancestors if only they will be careful to do according to all that I have commanded them and according to all the law that my servant Moses commanded them |
| 21:9 |
But they did not listen; andManasseh Manas′sehmisled seduced them to do more evil than the nations had done whomthat the Lord destroyed before the people of Israel |
| 21:10 |
AndThe the Lord said by his servants the prophets |
| 21:11 |
Because Manas′sehKing kingManasseh of Judah has committed these abominations and has done things more wicked than all that the Amorites did who were before him and has madecaused Judah also to sin with his idols; |
| 21:12 |
therefore thus says the Lord the God of Israel Behold I am bringing upon Jerusalem and Judah such evil that the ears of everyeveryone one who hears of it will tingle |
| 21:13 |
And I will stretch over Jerusalem the measuring line offor Samar′iaSamaria and the plummet offor the house of Ahab; and I will wipe Jerusalem as one wipes a dish wiping it and turning it upside down |
| 21:14 |
And I will cast off the remnant of my heritage and give them into the hand of their enemies; and they shall become a prey and a spoil to all their enemies |
| 21:15 |
because they have done what is evil in my sight and have provoked me to anger since the day their fathersancestors came out of Egypt even to this day |
| 21:16 |
Moreover Manas′sehManasseh shed very much innocent blood tilluntil he had filled Jerusalem from one end to another besides the sin whichthat he madecaused Judah to sin so that they did what was evil in the sight of the Lord |
| 21:17 |
Now the rest of the acts of Manas′sehManasseh and all that he did and the sin that he committed are they not written in the Book of the ChroniclesAnnals of the Kings of Judah |
| 21:18 |
AndManasseh Manas′seh slept with his fathersancestors and was buried in the garden of his house in the garden of Uzza; andHis Amon his son reignedAmon insucceeded his steadhim |
| 21:19 |
Amon was twenty two years old when he began to reign; and he reigned two years in Jerusalem His mothers name was Meshul′lemethMeshullemeth the daughter of Haruz of Jotbah |
| 21:20 |
AndHe he did what was evil in the sight of the Lord as Manas′seh his father Manasseh had done |
| 21:21 |
He walked in all the way in which his father walked and served the idols that his father served and worshiped them; |
| 21:22 |
he forsookabandoned the Lord the God of his fathersancestors and did not walk in the way of the Lord |
| 21:23 |
AndThe the servants of Amon conspired against him and killed the king in his house |
| 21:24 |
But the people of the land slewkilled all those who had conspired against King Amon and the people of the land made Josi′ah his son Josiah king in hisplace steadof him |
| 21:25 |
Now the rest of the acts of Amon whichthat he did are they not written in the Book of the ChroniclesAnnals of the Kings of Judah |
| 21:26 |
AndHe he was buried in his tomb in the garden of Uzza; andthen Josi′ah his son reignedJosiah insucceeded his steadhim |
| 22:1 |
Josi′ahJosiah was eight years old when he began to reign; and he reigned thirty one years in Jerusalem His mothers name was Jedi′dahJedidah the daughter of Adai′ahAdaiah of Bozkath |
| 22:2 |
AndHe he did what was right in the eyessight of the Lord and walked in all the way of David his father andDavid; he did not turn aside to the right hand or to the left |
| 22:3 |
In the eighteenth year of King Josi′ahJosiah the king sent Shaphan the son of Azali′ahAzaliah son of Meshul′lamMeshullam the secretary to the house of the Lord saying |
| 22:4 |

| 22:5 |
and let it be given into the hand of the workmenworkers who have the oversight of the house of the Lord; and let them give it to the workmenworkers who are at the house of the Lord repairing the house |
| 22:6 |
that is to the carpenters and to the builders and to the masons; asand welllet asthem foruse buyingit to buy timber and quarried stone to repair the house |
| 22:7 |
But no accounting shall be asked from them for the money whichthat is delivered into their hand for they deal honestly |

| 22:14 |
So Hilki′ah the priest andHilkiah Ahi′kamAhikam and Achbor and Shaphan and Asai′ahAsaiah went to Huldah the prophetess Huldah the wife of Shallum the son of Tikvah son of Harhas keeper of the wardrobe; now she dweltresided in Jerusalem in the Second Quarter; andwhere they talkedconsulted with her |
| 22:15 |
AndShe shedeclared said to them Thus says the Lord the God of Israel: Tell the man who sent you to me |
| 22:16 |
Thus says the Lord Behold I will indeed bring evildisaster uponon this place and uponon its inhabitants —all the words of the book whichthat the king of Judah has read |
| 22:17 |
Because they have forsakenabandoned me and have burnedmade incenseofferings to other gods so that they mighthave provokeprovoked me to anger with all the work of their hands therefore my wrath will be kindled against this place and it will not be quenched |
| 22:18 |
But as to the king of Judah who sent you to inquire of the Lord thus shall you say to him Thus says the Lord the God of Israel: Regarding the words whichthat you have heard |
| 22:19 |
because your heart was penitent and you humbled yourself before the Lord when you heard how I spoke against this place and against its inhabitants that they should become a desolation and a curse and because you have renttorn your clothes and wept before me I also have heard you says the Lord |
| 22:20 |
Therefore behold I will gather you to your fathersancestors and you shall be gathered to your grave in peace; and your eyes shall not see all the evildisaster whichthat I will bring uponon this place AndThey theytook broughtthe message back word to the king |

| 23:5 |
AndHe he deposed the idolatrous priests whom the kings of Judah had ordained to burnmake incenseofferings in the high places at the cities of Judah and roundaround about Jerusalem; those also who burnedmade incenseofferings to Ba′alBaal to the sun and the moon and the constellations and all the host of the heavens |

| 23:9 |
HoweverThe the priests of the high places however did not come up to the altar of the Lord in Jerusalem but they ate unleavened bread among their brethrenkindred |
| 23:10 |
AndHe he defiled To′phethTopheth which is in the valley of theBen sonshinnom ofso Hinnom that no one mightwould burnmake hisa son or hisa daughter pass through fire as an offering to Molech |
| 23:11 |
AndHe he removed the horses that the kings of Judah had dedicated to the sun at the entrance to the house of the Lord by the chamber of the eunuch Nathan melech the chamberlain which was in the precincts; andthen he burned the chariots of the sun with fire |
| 23:12 |
AndThe the altars on the roof of the upper chamber of Ahaz which the kings of Judah had made and the altars whichthat Manas′sehManasseh had made in the two courts of the house of the Lord he pulled down from there and broke in pieces and castthrew the dustrubble of them into the brookWadi Kidron |
| 23:13 |
AndThe the king defiled the high places that were east of Jerusalem to the south of the mountMount of corruptionDestruction which King Solomon the king of Israel had built for Ash′torethAstarte the abomination of the Sido′niansSidonians and for Chemosh the abomination of Moab and for Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites |

| 23:17 |
Then he said What is yonderthat monument that I see AndThe thepeople men of the city told him It is the tomb of the man of God who came from Judah and predicted these things whichthat you have done against the altar at Bethel |
| 23:18 |
AndHe he said Let him berest; let no manone move his bones So they let his bones alone with the bones of the prophet who came out of Samar′iaSamaria |

Before him there was no king like him who turned to the Lord with all his heart and with all his soul and with all his might according to all the law of Moses; nor did any like him arise after him |
| 23:26 |
Still the Lord did not turn from the fierceness of his great wrath by which his anger was kindled against Judah because of all the provocations with which Manas′sehManasseh had provoked him |
| 23:27 |
