| 1:1 |
Solomon the son of David established himself in his kingdom; and the Lord his God was with him and made him exceedingly great |
| 1:2 |
Solomon spokesummoned to all Israel to the commanders of the thousands and of the hundreds to the judges and to all the leaders inof all Israel the heads of fathersfamilies houses |
| 1:3 |
AndThen Solomon and all the whole assembly with him went to the high place that was at Gibeon; for theGods tent of meeting of God which Moses the servant of the Lord had made in the wilderness was there |
| 1:4 |
But David had brought up the ark of God up from Kir′iathKiriath je′arimjearim to the place that David had prepared for it; for he had pitched a tent for it in Jerusalem |
| 1:5 |
Moreover the bronze altar that Bez′alelBezalel the son of Uri son of Hur had made was there beforein front of the tabernacle of the Lord And Solomon and the assembly soughtinquired theat Lordit |
| 1:6 |
And Solomon went up there to the bronze altar before the Lord which was at the tent of meeting and offered a thousand burnt offerings uponon it |
| 1:7 |
InThat that night God appeared to Solomon and said to him Ask what I shallshould give you |
| 1:8 |
And Solomon said to God ThouYou hasthave shown great and steadfast love to David my father David and hasthave made me kingsucceed inhim hisas steadking |
| 1:9 |
O Lord God let thyyour promise to David my father beDavid now be fulfilled for thouyou hasthave made me king over a people as manynumerous as the dust of the earth |
| 1:10 |
Give me now wisdom and knowledge to go out and come in before this people for who can rule this thygreat people thatof isyours so great |
| 1:11 |
God answered Solomon Because this was in your heart and you have not asked for possessions wealth honor or the life of those who hate you and have not even asked for long life but have asked for wisdom and knowledge for yourself that you may rule my people over whom I have made you king |
| 1:13 |
So Solomon came from the high place at Gibeon from before the tent of meeting to Jerusalem And he reigned over Israel |
| 1:14 |
Solomon gathered together chariots and horsemenhorses; he had fourteen hundred chariots and twelve thousand horsemenhorses whomwhich he stationed in the chariot cities and with the king in Jerusalem |
| 1:15 |
AndThe the king made silver and gold as common in Jerusalem as stone and he made cedar as plentiful as the sycamore of the Shephe′lahShephelah |
| 1:16 |
And Solomons importhorses ofwere horsesimported was from Egypt and Ku′eKue; and the kings traders received them from Ku′eKue forat athe prevailing price |
| 1:17 |
They imported from Egypt and then exported a chariot from Egypt for six hundred shekels of silver and a horse for aone hundred and fifty; likewiseso through them these were exported to all the kings of the Hittites and the kings of SyriaAram |
| 2:1 |
Now Solomon purposeddecided to build a temple for the name of the Lord and a royal palace for himself |
| 2:2 |
And Solomon assignedconscripted seventy thousand menlaborers to bear burdens and eighty thousand tostonecutters quarry in the hill country andwith three thousand six hundred to oversee them |
| 2:3 |
And Solomon sent word to King Huram the king of Tyre: AsOnce you dealt with David my father David and sent him cedar to build himself a house to dwelllive in so deal with me |
| 2:4 |
Behold I am now about to build a house for the name of the Lord my God and dedicate it to him for theoffering burningfragrant of incense of sweet spices before him and for the continualregular offering of the showbreadrows of bread and for burnt offerings morning and evening on the sabbaths and the new moons and the appointed feastsfestivals of the Lord our God as ordained forforever ever for Israel |
| 2:5 |
The house whichthat I am about to build will be great for our God is greater than allother gods |
| 2:6 |
But who is able to build him a house since heaven even highest heaven cannot contain him Who am I to build a house for him except as a place to burnmake incenseofferings before him |
| 2:7 |
So now send me aan manartisan skilled to work in gold silver bronze and iron and in purple crimson and blue fabrics trained also in engraving to bejoin with the skilled workers who are with me in Judah and Jerusalem whom David my father David provided |
| 2:8 |
Send me also cedar cypress and algum timber from Lebanon for I know that your servants knoware howskilled toin cutcutting timber in Lebanon Andtimber myMy servants will bework with your servants |
| 2:9 |
to prepare timber for me in abundance for the house I am about to build will be great and wonderful |
| 2:10 |
I will giveprovide for your servants thethose hewers who cut the timber twenty thousand cors of crushed wheat twenty thousand cors of barley twenty thousand baths of wine and twenty thousand baths of oil |
| 2:11 |
Then King Huram the king of Tyre answered in a letter whichthat he sent to Solomon Because the Lord loves his people he has made you king over them |
| 2:12 |
Huram also said Blessed be the Lord God of Israel who made heaven and earth who has given King David a wise son enduedendowed with discretion and understanding who will build a temple for the Lord and a royal palace for himself |
| 2:13 |
Now I have sentdispatched Huram abi a skilled manartisan enduedendowed with understanding Huramabi |
| 2:14 |
the son of aone woman of the daughtersDanite ofwomen Dan and his father was a manTyrian of Tyre He is trained to work in gold silver bronze iron stone and wood and in purple blue and crimson fabrics and fine linen and to do all sorts of engraving and execute any design that may be assigned him with your craftsmenartisans the craftsmenartisans of my lord David your father David |
| 2:15 |
Now thereforeas for the wheat and barley oil and wine of which my lord has spoken let him send them to his servants; |
| 2:16 |
andWe we will cut whatever timber you need from Lebanon and bring it to you inas rafts by sea to Joppa; so that you maywill take it up to Jerusalem |
| 2:17 |
Then Solomon took a census of all the aliens who were residing in the land of Israel after the census ofthat themhis whichfather David his father had taken; and there were found ato be one hundred and fifty three thousand six hundred |
| 2:18 |
Seventy thousand of them he assigned toas bearlaborers burdens eighty thousand toas quarrystonecutters in the hill country and three thousand six hundred as overseers to make the people work |
| 3:1 |
Then Solomon began to build the house of the Lord in Jerusalem on Mount Mori′ahMoriah where the Lord had appeared to David his father David at the place that David had appointeddesignated on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jeb′usiteJebusite |
| 3:2 |
He began to build inon the second day of the second month of the fourth year of his reign |
| 3:3 |
These are Solomons measurements for building the house of God: the length in cubits of the old standard was sixty cubits and the breadthwidth twenty cubits |
| 3:4 |
The vestibule in front of the nave of the house was twenty cubits long equalacross to the width of the house; and its height was aone hundred and twenty cubits He overlaid it on the inside with pure gold |
| 3:5 |
The nave he lined with cypress and covered it with fine gold and made palms and chains on it |
| 3:6 |
He adorned the house with settings of precious stones The gold was gold offrom Parva′imParvaim |
| 3:8 |
AndHe he made the most holy place; its length corresponding to the breadthwidth of the house was twenty cubits and its breadthwidth was twenty cubits; he overlaid it with six hundred talents of fine gold |
| 3:9 |
The weight of the nails was one shekel to fifty shekels of gold AndHe he overlaid the upper chambers with gold |
| 3:10 |
In the most holy place he made two carved cherubim of wood and overlaid them with gold |
| 3:11 |
The wings of the cherubim together extended twenty cubits: one wing of the one of five cubits long touched the wall of the house and its other wing of five cubits long touched the wing of the other cherub; |
| 3:12 |
and of this cherub one wing of five cubits long touched the wall of the house and the other wing also of five cubits long was joined to the wing of the first cherub |
| 3:14 |
And heSolomon made the veilcurtain of blue and purple and crimson fabrics and fine linen and worked cherubim oninto it |
| 3:16 |
He made encircling chains like a necklace and put them on the tops of the pillars; and he made aone hundred pomegranates and put them on the chains |
| 3:17 |
He set up the pillars in front of the temple one on the southright the other on the northleft; thatthe one on the southright he called Jachin and thatthe one on the northleft Bo′azBoaz |
| 4:1 |
He made an altar of bronze twenty cubits long and twenty cubits wide and ten cubits high |
| 4:2 |
Then he made the molten sea; it was round ten cubits from brimrim to brimrim and five cubits high andA a line of thirty cubits measuredwould itsencircle circumferenceit completely |
| 4:3 |
Under it were figurespanels ofall gourdsaround foreach thirtyof ten cubits compassingsurrounding the sea round about; thethere gourds were in two rows castof withpanels itcast when it was cast |
| 4:4 |
It stood uponon twelve oxen three facing north three facing west three facing south and three facing east; the sea was set uponon them andThe allhindquarters theirof hindereach parts were inwardtoward the inside |
| 4:5 |
Its thickness was a handbreadth; and its brimrim was made like the brimrim of a cup like the flower of a lily; it held over three thousand baths |
| 4:6 |
He also made ten laversbasins in which to wash and set five on the southright side and five on the northleft side In these they were to rinse off what was used for the burnt offering andThe the sea was for the priests to wash in |
| 4:7 |
AndHe he made ten golden lampstands as prescribed and set them in the temple five on the south side and five on the north |
| 4:8 |
He also made ten tables and placed them in the temple five on the southright side and five on the northleft And he made aone hundred basins of gold |
| 4:9 |
He made the court of the priests and the great court and doors for the court; andhe overlaid their doors with bronze; |
| 4:10 |
andHe he set the sea at the southeast corner of the house |
| 4:11 |
And Huram also made the pots the shovels and the basins SoThus Huram finished the work that he did for King Solomon on the house of God: |
| 4:12 |
the two pillars the bowls and the two capitals on the top of the pillars; and the two networkslatticeworks to cover the two bowls of the capitals that were on the top of the pillars; |
| 4:13 |
and the four hundred pomegranates for the two networkslatticeworks two rows of pomegranates for each networklatticework to cover the two bowls of the capitals that were uponon the pillars |
| 4:14 |
He made the stands also and the laversbasins uponon the stands |
| 4:15 |
and the one sea and the twelve oxen underneath it |
| 4:16 |
The pots the shovels the forks and all the equipment for these HuramabiHuram abi made of burnished bronze for King Solomon for the house of the Lord |
| 4:17 |
In the plain of the Jordan the king cast them in the clay ground between Succoth and Zer′edahZeredah |
| 4:18 |
Solomon made all these things in great quantities so that the weight of the bronze was not ascertaineddetermined |
| 4:22 |
the snuffers basins dishesladles for incense and firepans of pure gold; andAs for the socketsentrance ofto the temple: for the inner doors to the most holy place and for the doors of the nave of the temple were of gold |
| 5:1 |
Thus all the work that Solomon did for the house of the Lord was finished And Solomon brought in the things whichthat David his father David had dedicated and stored the silver the gold and all the vessels in the treasuries of the house of God |
| 5:2 |
Then Solomon assembled the elders of Israel and all the heads of the tribes the leaders of the fathersancestral houses of the people of Israel in Jerusalem to bring up the ark of the covenant of the Lord out of the city of David which is Zion |
| 5:3 |
And all the menIsraelites of Israel assembled before the king at the feastfestival whichthat is in the seventh month |
| 5:4 |
And all the elders of Israel came and the Levites tookcarried up the ark |
| 5:5 |
AndSo they brought up the ark the tent of meeting and all the holy vessels that were in the tent; the priests and the Levites brought them up |
| 5:6 |
And King Solomon and all the congregation of Israel who had assembled before him were before the ark sacrificing so many sheep and oxen that they could not be countednumbered or numberedcounted |
| 5:7 |
SoThen the priests brought the ark of the covenant of the Lord to its place in the inner sanctuary of the house in the most holy place underneath the wings of the cherubim |
| 5:9 |
AndThe the poles were so long that the ends of the poles were seen from the holy place beforein front of the inner sanctuary; but they could not be seen from outside; and they are there to this day |
| 5:10 |
There was nothing in the ark except the two tablestablets whichthat Moses put there at Horeb where the Lord made a covenant with the people of Israel whenafter they came out of Egypt |
| 5:11 |
Now when the priests came out of the holy place for all the priests who were present had sanctified themselves without regard to their divisions; |
| 5:12 |
and all the Leviticallevitical singers Asaph Heman and Jedu′thunJeduthun their sons and kinsmenkindred arrayed in fine linen with cymbals harps and lyres stood east of the altar with aone hundred and twenty priests who were trumpeters; |
| 5:13 |
andIt it was the duty of the trumpeters and singers to make themselves heard in unison in praise and thanksgiving to the Lord and when the song was raised with trumpets and cymbals and other musical instruments in praise to the Lord For he is good for his steadfast love endures forforever ever the house the house of the Lord was filled with a cloud |
| 6:1 |
Then Solomon said The Lord has said that he would dwellreside in thick darkness |
| 6:2 |
I have built theeyou an exalted house a place for theeyou to dwellreside in for everforever |
| 6:3 |
Then the king facedturned aboutaround and blessed all the assembly of Israel while all the assembly of Israel stood |
| 6:4 |
And he said Blessed be the Lord the God of Israel who with his hand has fulfilled what he promised with his mouth to David my father David saying |
| 6:5 |
Since the day that I brought my people out of the land of Egypt I chosehave nonot chosen a city infrom allany of the tribes of Israel in which to build a house so that my name might be there and I chose no manone as princeruler over my people Israel; |
| 6:6 |
but I have chosen Jerusalem in order that my name may be there and I have chosen David to be over my people Israel |
| 6:7 |
NowMy itfather wasDavid inhad theit heartin ofmind David my father to build a house for the name of the Lord the God of Israel |
| 6:8 |
But the Lord said to David my father WhereasDavid itYou wasdid inwell yourto heartconsider tobuilding build a house for my name you did well that it was in your heart; |
| 6:10 |
Now the Lord has fulfilled his promise whichthat he made; for I have risensucceeded inmy thefather place of David my father and sit on the throne of Israel as the Lord promised and I have built the house for the name of the Lord the God of Israel |
| 6:11 |
AndThere there I have set the ark in which is the covenant of the Lord whichthat he made with the people of Israel |
| 6:12 |
Then Solomon stood before the altar of the Lord in the presence of all the whole assembly of Israel and spread forthout his hands |
| 6:13 |
Solomon had made a bronze platform five cubits long five cubits wide and three cubits high and had set it in the court; and he stood uponon it Then he knelt uponon his knees in the presence of all the whole assembly of Israel and spread forthout his hands toward heaven; |
| 6:14 |
andHe said O Lord God of Israel there is no God like theeyou in heaven or on earth keeping covenant andin showing steadfast love towith thyyour servants who walk before theeyou with all their heart;— |
| 6:15 |
you who hasthave kept withfor thyyour servant David my father David what thouyou didstpromised declare to him; yeaIndeed thouyou didstpromised speak with thyyour mouth and withthis thyday handhave hast fulfilled itwith thisyour dayhand |
| 6:16 |
NowTherefore therefore O Lord God of Israel keep withfor thyyour servant David my father whatDavid thouthat hastwhich you promised him saying There shall never fail you a mansuccessor before me to sit uponon the throne of Israel if only your sonschildren takekeep heed to their way to walk in my law as you have walked before me |
| 6:17 |
NowTherefore therefore O Lord God of Israel let thyyour word be confirmed which thouyou hastpromised spoken to thyyour servant David |
| 6:18 |
But will God dwell indeed reside with manmortals on the earth BeholdEven heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain thee;you how much less this house whichthat I have built |
| 6:19 |
YetRegard haveyour regardservants to the prayer of thy servant and to his supplicationplea O Lord my God hearkeningheeding to the cry and to the prayer whichthat thyyour servant prays beforeto thee;you |
| 6:20 |
thatMay thyyour eyes may be open day and night toward this house the place where thouyou hast promised to set thyyour name thatand thoumay mayestyou hearkenheed to the prayer whichthat thyyour servant offersprays toward this place |
| 6:21 |
And hearkenhear thou to the supplicationsplea of thyyour servant and of thyyour people Israel when they pray toward this place; yeamay you hear thou from heaven thyyour dwelling place; hear and when thou hearest forgive |
| 6:22 |
If asomeone man sins against hisanother neighbor and is maderequired to take an oath and comes and swears his oath before thyyour altar in this house |
| 6:23 |
thenmay you hear thou from heaven and act and judge thyyour servants requitingrepaying the guilty by bringing histheir conduct uponon histheir own head and vindicating those who are in the righteousright by rewarding himthem accordingin toaccordance hiswith their righteousness |
| 6:24 |
IfWhen thyyour people Israel having sinned against you are defeated before thean enemy becausebut they have sinned against thee when they turn again andto acknowledgeyou thyconfess your name and pray and makeplead supplicationwith toyou thee in this house |
| 6:25 |
thenmay you hear thou from heaven and forgive the sin of thyyour people Israel and bring them again to the land whichthat thouyou gavestgave to them and to their fathersancestors |
| 6:26 |
When heaven is shut up and there is no rain because they have sinned against theeyou ifand then they pray toward this place andconfess acknowledgeyour thy name and turn from their sin whenbecause thouyou dostpunish afflict them |
| 6:27 |
thenmay you hear thou in heaven and forgive the sin of thyyour servants thyyour people Israel when thouyou dost teach them the good way in which they should walk; and grantsend down rain upon thyyour land which thouyou hasthave given to thyyour people as an inheritance |
| 6:28 |
If there is famine in the land if there is pestilenceplague or blight or mildew or locust or caterpillar; if their enemies besiege them in any of theirthe citiessettlements of the lands; whatever plaguesuffering whatever sickness there is; |
| 6:29 |
whatever prayer whatever supplicationplea isfrom made by any manindividual or byfrom all thyyour people Israel eachall knowing histheir own afflictionsuffering and histheir own sorrowsorrows andso stretchingthat they stretch out histheir hands toward this house; |
| 6:30 |
thenmay you hear thou from heaven thyyour dwelling place and forgive and render to eachall whose heart thouyou knowestknow according to all histheir ways for thou thou only knowestyou theknow hearts of the childrenhuman ofheart men; |
| 6:31 |
thatThus may they may fear theeyou and walk in thyyour ways all the days that they live in the land whichthat thouyou gavestgave to our fathersancestors |
| 6:32 |
Likewise when aforeigners foreigner who isare not of thyyour people Israel comescome from a fardistant countryland forbecause the sake of thyyour great name and thyyour mighty hand and thyyour outstretched arm when hethey comescome and prayspray toward this house |
| 6:33 |
may you hear thou from heaven thyyour dwelling place and do accordingwhatever to all for which the foreignerforeigners callsask toof thee;you in order that all the peoples of the earth may know thyyour name and fear theeyou as do thyyour people Israel and that they may know that your name has been invoked on this house whichthat I have built is called by thy name |
| 6:34 |
If thyyour people go out to battle against their enemies by whatever way thouyou shaltshall send them and they pray to theeyou toward this city whichthat thouyou hasthave chosen and the house whichthat I have built for thyyour name |
| 6:35 |
then hear thou from heaven their prayer and their supplicationplea and maintain their cause |
| 6:36 |
If they sin against theeyou—for there is no manone who does not sin—and thouyou artare angry with them and dost give them to an enemy so that they are carried away captive to a land far or near; |
| 6:37 |
yetthen if they laycome it to hearttheir senses in the land to which they have been carriedtaken captive and repent and makeplead supplicationwith toyou thee in the land of their captivity saying We have sinned and have acteddone perverselywrong; andwe have acted wickedly; |
| 6:38 |
if they repent with all their mindheart and withsoul all their heart in the land of their captivity to which they were carriedtaken captive and pray toward their land which thouyou gavestgave to their fathersancestors the city whichthat thouyou hasthave chosen and the house whichthat I have built for thyyour name |
| 6:39 |
then hear thou from heaven thyyour dwelling place their prayer and their supplicationspleas and maintain their cause and forgive thyyour people who have sinned against theeyou |
| 6:40 |
Now O my God let thyyour eyes be open and thyyour ears attentive to a prayer offrom this place |
| 6:41 |
AndNow nowrise ariseup O Lord God and go to thyyour resting place thouyou and the ark of thyyour might Let thyyour priests O Lord God be clothed with salvation and let thyyour saintsfaithful rejoice in thyyour goodness |
| 6:42 |
O Lord God do not turnreject awayyour the face of thy anointed one Remember thyyour steadfast love for Davidyour thyservant servantDavid |
| 7:1 |
When Solomon had ended his prayer fire came down from heaven and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices; and the glory of the Lord filled the temple |
| 7:2 |
AndThe the priests could not enter the house of the Lord because the glory of the Lord filled the Lords house |
| 7:3 |
When all the childrenpeople of Israel saw the fire come down and the glory of the Lord uponon the temple they bowed down on the pavement with their faces to the earthground on the pavement and worshiped and gave thanks to the Lord saying For he is good for his steadfast love endures for everforever |
| 7:5 |
King Solomon offered as a sacrifice twenty two thousand oxen and aone hundred and twenty thousand sheep So the king and all the people dedicated the house of God |
| 7:6 |
The priests stood at their posts; the Levites also with the instruments for music to the Lord whichthat King David had made for giving thanks to the Lord—for his steadfast love endures for everforever—whenever David offered praises by their ministry; oppositeOpposite them the priests sounded trumpets; and all Israel stood |
| 7:7 |
And Solomon consecrated the middle of the court that was beforein front of the house of the Lord; for there he offered the burnt offeringofferings and the fat of the peace offerings of well being because the bronze altar Solomon had made could not hold the burnt offering and the cerealgrain offering and the fat parts |
| 7:8 |
At that time Solomon held the feastfestival for seven days and all Israel with him a very great congregation from theLebo entrancehamath of Hamath to the BrookWadi of Egypt |
| 7:9 |
AndOn on the eighth day they held a solemn assembly; for they had keptobserved the dedication of the altar seven days and the feastfestival seven days |
| 7:10 |
On the twenty third day of the seventh month he sent the people away to their homes joyful and gladin ofgood heartspirits forbecause of the goodness that the Lord had shown to David and to Solomon and to Israel his people Israel |
| 7:14 |
if my people who are called by my name humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land |
| 7:16 |
For now I have chosen and consecrated this house so that my name may be there for everforever; my eyes and my heart will be there for all time |
| 7:17 |
AndAs as for you if you walk before me as David your father David walked doing according to all that I have commanded you and keeping my statutes and my ordinances |
| 7:18 |
then I will establish your royal throne as I covenantedmade covenant with David your father David saying ThereYou shall notnever faillack you a mansuccessor to rule over Israel |
| 7:19 |
But if you turn aside and forsake my statutes and my commandments whichthat I have set before you and go and serve other gods and worship them |
| 7:20 |
then I will pluck you up from the land whichthat I have given you; and this house which I have consecrated for my name I will cast out of my sight and will make it a proverb and a byword among all peoples |
| 7:21 |
And atregarding this house whichnow is exalted everyeveryone one passing by will be astonished and say Why has the Lord done thussuch a thing to this land and to this house |
| 7:22 |
Then they will say Because they forsookabandoned the Lord the God of their fathersancestors who brought them out of the land of Egypt and laidthey holdadopted on other gods and worshiped them and served them; therefore he has brought all this evilcalamity upon them |
| 8:1 |
At the end of twenty years induring which Solomon had built the house of the Lord and his own house |
| 8:2 |
Solomon rebuilt the cities whichthat Huram had given to him and settled the people of Israel in them |
| 8:3 |
And Solomon went to Ha′mathHamath zo′bahzobah and tookcaptured it |
| 8:4 |
He built Tadmor in the wilderness and all the storestorage citiestowns whichthat he built in Hamath |
| 8:5 |
He also built Upper Beth hor′onhoron and Lower Beth hor′onhoron fortified cities with walls gates and bars |
| 8:6 |
and Ba′alathBaalath andas allwell theas storeall citiesSolomons thatstorage Solomontowns had and all the citiestowns for his chariots and the citiestowns for his horsemencavalry and whatever Solomon desired to build in Jerusalem in Lebanon and in all the land of his dominion |
| 8:7 |
All the people who were left of the Hittites the Amorites the Per′izzitesPerizzites the Hivites and the Jeb′usitesJebusites who were not of Israel |
| 8:8 |
from their descendants who were still left after them in the land whom the people of Israel had not destroyed—these Solomon madeconscripted afor forced levylabor andas sois theystill arethe tocase thistoday day |
| 8:9 |
But of the people of Israel Solomon made no slaves for his work; they were soldiers and his officers the commanders of his chariotschariotry and hiscavalry horsemen |
| 8:10 |
AndThese these were the chief officers of King Solomon two hundred and fifty of them who exercised authority over the people |
| 8:11 |
Solomon brought Pharaohs daughter up from the city of David to the house whichthat he had built for her for he said My wife shall not live in the house of King David king of Israel for the places to which the ark of the Lord has come are holy |
| 8:12 |
Then Solomon offered up burnt offerings to the Lord uponon the altar of the Lord whichthat he had built beforein front of the vestibule |
| 8:13 |
as the duty of each day required offering according to the commandment of Moses for the sabbaths the new moons and the three annual feastsfestivals—the feastfestival of unleavened bread the feastfestival of weeks and the feastfestival of tabernaclesbooths |
| 8:14 |
According to the ordinance of David his father David he appointed the divisions of the priests for their service and the Levites for their offices of praise and ministry beforealongside the priests as the duty of each day required and the gatekeepers in their divisions for the several gates; for so David the man of God had commanded |
| 8:15 |
AndThey they did not turn asideaway from what the king had commanded the priests and Levites concerningregarding anyanything matterat andall concerningor regarding the treasuries |
| 8:16 |
Thus was accomplished all the work of Solomon was accomplished from the day the foundation of the house of the Lord was laid until it was finished So the house of the Lord was completedfinished completely |
| 8:17 |
Then Solomon went to E′zionEzion ge′bergeber and Eloth on the shore of the sea in the land of Edom |
| 8:18 |
And Huram sent him byin the care of his servants ships and servants familiar with the sea andThey they went to Ophir together with the servants of Solomon and fetchedimported from there four hundred and fifty talents of gold and brought it to King Solomon |
| 9:1 |
NowWhen when the queen of Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon she came to Jerusalem to test him with hard questions having a very great retinue and camels bearing spices and very much gold and precious stones When she came to Solomon she tolddiscussed with him all that was on her mind |
| 9:2 |
And Solomon answered all her questions; there was nothing hidden from Solomon whichthat he could not explain to her |
| 9:3 |
AndWhen when the queen of Sheba had seenobserved the wisdom of Solomon the house that he had built |
| 9:4 |
the food of his table the seating of his officials and the attendance of his servants and their clothing his cupbearersvalets and their clothing and his burnt offerings whichthat he offered at the house of the Lord there was no more spirit left in her |
| 9:5 |
AndSo she said to the king The report was true whichthat I heard in my own land of your affairsaccomplishments and of your wisdom |
| 9:6 |
but I did not believe the reports until I came and my own eyes hadsaw seen it; andNot beholdeven half of the greatness of your wisdom washad notbeen told to me; you far surpass the report whichthat I had heard |
| 9:7 |
Happy are your wivespeople Happy are these your servants who continually standattend before you and hear your wisdom |
| 9:8 |
Blessed be the Lord your God who has delighted in you and set you on his throne as king for the Lord your God Because your God loved Israel and would establish them forforever ever he has made you king over them that you may execute justice and righteousness |
| 9:9 |
Then she gave the king aone hundred and twenty talents of gold and a very great quantity of spices and precious stones: there were no spices such as those whichthat the queen of Sheba gave to King Solomon |
| 9:11 |
AndFrom the kingalgum madewood of the algumking woodmade steps for the house of the Lord and for the kings house lyres also and harps for the singers; there never was seen the like of them before in the land of Judah |
| 9:12 |
AndMeanwhile King Solomon gavegranted to the queen of Sheba allevery desire that she desiredexpressed whateverwell shebeyond asked besides what she had brought to the king SoThen she turnedreturned and went back to her own land with her servants |
| 9:13 |
NowThe the weight of gold that came to Solomon in one year was six hundred and sixty six talents of gold |
| 9:15 |
King Solomon made two hundred large shields of beaten gold; six hundred shekels of beaten gold went into each large shield |
| 9:16 |
AndHe he made three hundred shields of beaten gold; three hundred shekels of gold went into each shield; and the king put them in the House of the Forest of Lebanon |
| 9:19 |
while twelve lions stoodwere therestanding one on each end of a step on the six steps The like of it was never made in any kingdom |
| 9:23 |
AndAll all the kings of the earth sought the presence of Solomon to hear his wisdom which God had put into his mind |
| 9:24 |
Every one of them brought hisa present articlesobjects of silver and of gold garments myrrhweaponry spices horses and mules so much year by year |
| 9:25 |
And Solomon had four thousand stalls for horses and chariots and twelve thousand horsemenhorses whomwhich he stationed in the chariot cities and with the king in Jerusalem |
| 9:26 |
AndHe he ruled over all the kings from the Euphra′tesEuphrates to the land of the Philistines and to the border of Egypt |
| 9:27 |
AndThe the king made silver as common in Jerusalem as stone and cedar as plentiful as the sycamore of the Shephe′lahShephelah |
| 9:28 |
AndHorses horses were imported for Solomon from Egypt and from all lands |
| 9:29 |
Now the rest of the acts of Solomon from first to last are they not written in the history of Nathan the prophet Nathan and in the prophecy of Ahi′jahAhijah the Shi′loniteShilonite and in the visions of Iddo the seer Iddo concerning Jerobo′amJeroboam the son of Nebat |
| 9:31 |
And Solomon slept with his fathersancestors and was buried in the city of David his father David; and Rehobo′am his son reignedRehoboam insucceeded his steadhim |
| 10:1 |
Rehobo′amRehoboam went to Shechem for all Israel had come to Shechem to make him king |
| 10:2 |
AndWhen whenJeroboam Jerobo′am the son of Nebat heard of it for he was in Egypt whitherwhere he had fled from King Solomon then Jerobo′amJeroboam returned from Egypt |
| 10:3 |
AndThey they sent and called him; and Jerobo′amJeroboam and all Israel came and said to Rehobo′amRehoboam |
| 10:4 |
Your father made our yoke heavy Now therefore lighten the hard service of your father and his heavy yoke uponthat he placed on us and we will serve you |
| 10:6 |
Then King Rehobo′amRehoboam took counsel with the oldolder men who had stoodattended before Solomon his father Solomon while he was yetstill alive saying How do you advise me to answer this people |
| 10:7 |
AndThey theyanswered said to him If you will be kind to this people and please them and speak good words to them then they will be your servants forforever ever |
| 10:8 |
But he forsookrejected the counseladvice whichthat the oldolder men gave him and tookconsulted counsel with the young men who had grown up with him and stoodnow beforeattended him |
| 10:9 |
AndHe he said to them What do you advise that we answer this people who have said to me Lighten the yoke that your father put uponon us |
| 10:10 |
AndThe the young men who had grown up with him said to him Thus shallshould you speak to the people who said to you Your father made our yoke heavy but do you must lighten it for us; thustell shall you say to them My little finger is thicker than my fathers loins |
| 10:11 |
AndNow now whereas my father laid uponon you a heavy yoke I will add to your yoke My father chastiseddisciplined you with whips but I will chastisediscipline you with scorpions |
| 10:12 |
So Jerobo′amJeroboam and all the people came to Rehobo′amRehoboam the third day as the king had said Come to me again the third day |
| 10:13 |
AndThe the king answered them harshly andKing forsakingRehoboam rejected the counseladvice of the oldolder men; |
| 10:14 |
Kinghe Rehobo′am spoke to them accordingin toaccordance with the counseladvice of the young men saying My father made your yoke heavy but I will add to it; my father chastiseddisciplined you with whips but I will chastisediscipline you with scorpions |
| 10:15 |
So the king did not hearkenlisten to the people; forbecause it was a turn of affairs brought about by God so that the Lord might fulfilfulfill his word which he spokehad spoken by Ahi′jahAhijah the Shi′loniteShilonite to Jerobo′amJeroboam the son of Nebat |
| 10:16 |
AndWhen when all Israel saw that the king didwould not hearkenlisten to them the people answered the king What portionshare havedo we have in David We have no inheritance in the son of Jesse Each of you to your tents O Israel Look now to your own house O David So all Israel departed to their tents |
| 10:17 |
But Rehobo′amRehoboam reigned over the people of Israel who dweltwere living in the cities of Judah |
| 10:18 |
ThenWhen King Rehobo′amRehoboam sent Hador′amHadoram who was taskmaster over the forced labor and the people of Israel stoned him to death with stones And King Rehobo′amRehoboam madehurriedly hastemounted to mount his chariot to flee to Jerusalem |
| 11:1 |
When Rehobo′amRehoboam came to Jerusalem he assembled theone househundred ofeighty Judahthousand andchosen Benjamintroops aof hundredthe andhouse eightyof thousandJudah chosenand warriorsBenjamin to fight against Israel to restore the kingdom to Rehobo′amRehoboam |
| 11:2 |
But the word of the Lord came to Shemai′ahShemaiah the man of God: |
| 11:3 |
Say to Rehobo′amKing theRehoboam son of SolomonJudah kingson of JudahSolomon and to all Israel in Judah and Benjamin |
| 11:4 |
Thus says the Lord: You shall not go up or fight against your brethrenkindred ReturnLet everyeveryone manreturn to his home for this thing is from me So they hearkenedheeded to the word of the Lord and returnedturned andback didfrom notthe goexpedition against Jerobo′amJeroboam |
| 11:5 |
Rehobo′amRehoboam dweltresided in Jerusalem and he built cities for defense in Judah |
| 11:6 |
He built up Bethlehem Etam Teko′aTekoa |
| 11:8 |
Gath Mare′shahMareshah Ziph |
| 11:9 |
Adora′imAdoraim Lachish Aze′kahAzekah |
| 11:10 |
Zorah Ai′jalonAijalon and Hebron fortified cities whichthat are in Judah and in Benjamin |
| 11:12 |
AndHe healso put large shields and spears in all the cities and made them very strong So he held Judah and Benjamin |
| 11:13 |
AndThe the priests and the Levites thatwho were in all Israel resortedpresented themselves to him from all placestheir whereterritories they lived |
| 11:14 |
ForThe the Levites had left their common lands and their holdings and camehad come to Judah and Jerusalem because Jerobo′amJeroboam and his sons casthad prevented them out from serving as priests of the Lord |
| 11:15 |
and hehad appointed his own priests for the high places and for the satyrsgoat demons and for the calves whichthat he had made |
| 11:16 |
AndThose those who had set their hearts to seek the Lord God of Israel came after them from all the tribes of Israel to Jerusalem to sacrifice to the Lord the God of their fathersancestors |
| 11:17 |
They strengthened the kingdom of Judah and for three years they made Rehobo′amRehoboam the son of Solomon secure for they walked for three years in the way of David and Solomon |
| 11:18 |
Rehobo′amRehoboam took as his wife Ma′halathMahalath the daughter of Jer′imothJerimoth the son of David and of Ab′ihailAbihail the daughter of Eli′abEliab the son of Jesse; |
| 11:19 |
andShe she bore him sons: Je′ushJeush Shemari′ahShemariah and Zaham |
| 11:20 |
After her he took Ma′acahMaacah the daughter of Ab′salomAbsalom who bore him Abi′jahAbijah Attai Ziza and Shelo′mithShelomith |
| 11:21 |
Rehobo′amRehoboam loved Ma′acahMaacah the daughter of Ab′salomAbsalom abovemore than all his other wives and concubines he took eighteen wives and sixty concubines and hadbecame the father of twenty eight sons and sixty daughters; |
| 11:22 |
andRehoboam Rehobo′am appointed Abi′jahAbijah the son of Ma′acahMaacah as chief prince among his brothers for he intended to make him king |
| 11:23 |
AndHe he dealt wisely and distributed some of his sons through all the districts of Judah and Benjamin in all the fortified cities; and he gave them abundant provisions and procuredfound many wives for them |
| 12:1 |
When the rule of Rehobo′amRehoboam was established and washe grew strong he forsookabandoned the law of the Lord he and all Israel with him |
| 12:2 |
In the fifth year of King Rehobo′amRehoboam because they had been unfaithful to the Lord King Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem |
| 12:3 |
with twelve hundred chariots and sixty thousand horsemencavalry AndA thecountless peoplearmy were without number who came with him from Egypt—Libyans Suk′kiSukkiim im and Ethiopians |
| 12:4 |
AndHe he took the fortified cities of Judah and came as far as Jerusalem |
| 12:5 |
Then Shemai′ah the prophet Shemaiah came to Rehobo′amRehoboam and to the princesofficers of Judah who had gathered at Jerusalem because of Shishak and said to them Thus says the Lord: You abandoned me so I have abandoned you to the hand of Shishak |
| 12:6 |
Then the princesofficers of Israel and the king humbled themselves and said The Lord is righteousin the right |
| 12:7 |
When the Lord saw that they humbled themselves the word of the Lord came to Shemai′ahShemaiah saying: They have humbled themselves; I will not destroy them but I will grant them some deliverance and my wrath shall not be poured out uponon Jerusalem by the hand of Shishak |
| 12:8 |
Nevertheless they shall be his servants toso him that they may know mythe servicedifference andbetween theserving serviceme ofand serving the kingdoms of theother countrieslands |
| 12:9 |
So King Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem; he took away the treasures of the house of the Lord and the treasures of the kings house; he took away everything He also took away the shields of gold whichthat Solomon had made; |
| 12:10 |
andbut King Rehobo′amRehoboam made in theirplace steadof them shields of bronze and committed them to the hands of the officers of the guard who kept the door of the kings house |
| 12:11 |
AndWhenever as often as the king went into the house of the Lord the guard camewould andcome borealong bearing them and broughtwould then bring them back to the guardroom |
| 12:12 |
AndBecause when he humbled himself the wrath of the Lord turned from him so as not to makedestroy athem complete destructioncompletely; moreover conditions were good in Judah |
| 12:13 |
So King Rehobo′amRehoboam established himself in Jerusalem and reigned Rehobo′amRehoboam was forty one years old when he began to reign; and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem the city whichthat the Lord had chosen out of all the tribes of Israel to put his name there His mothers name was Na′amahNaamah the AmmonitessAmmonite |
| 12:14 |
AndHe he did evil for he did not set his heart to seek the Lord |
| 12:15 |
Now the acts of Rehobo′amRehoboam from first to last are they not written in the chroniclesrecords of Shemai′ah the prophet Shemaiah and of Iddo the seer Iddo recorded by genealogy There were continual wars between Rehobo′amRehoboam and Jerobo′amJeroboam |
| 12:16 |
AndRehoboam Rehobo′am slept with his fathersancestors and was buried in the city of David; and Abi′jah his son reignedAbijah insucceeded his steadhim |
| 13:1 |
In the eighteenth year of King Jerobo′amJeroboam Abi′jahAbijah began to reign over Judah |
| 13:2 |
He reigned for three years in Jerusalem His mothers name was Micai′ahMicaiah the daughter of U′rielUriel of Gib′eahGibeah Now there was war between Abi′jahAbijah and Jerobo′amJeroboam |
| 13:3 |
Abi′jahAbijah wentengaged outin to battle having an army of valiant menwarriors of war four hundred thousand picked men; and Jerobo′amJeroboam drew up his line of battle against him with eight hundred thousand picked mighty warriors |
| 13:4 |
Then Abi′jahAbijah stood up on the slope of Mount Zemara′imZemaraim whichthat is in the hill country of E′phraimEphraim and said HearListen to me OJeroboam Jerobo′am and all Israel |
| 13:5 |
OughtDo you not to know that the Lord God of Israel gave the kingship over Israel forforever ever to David and his sons by a covenant of salt |
| 13:6 |
Yet Jerobo′amJeroboam the son of Nebat a servant of Solomon the son of David rose up and rebelled against his lord; |
| 13:7 |
and certain worthless scoundrels gathered aboutaround him and defied Rehobo′amRehoboam the son of Solomon when Rehobo′amRehoboam was young and irresolute and could not withstand them |
| 13:8 |
And now you think tothat you can withstand the kingdom of the Lord in the hand of the sons of David because you are a great multitude and have with you the golden calves whichthat Jerobo′amJeroboam made youas gods for godsyou |
| 13:9 |
Have you not driven out the priests of the Lord the sonsdescendants of Aaron and the Levites and made priests for yourselves like the peoples of other lands Whoever comes to consecratebe himselfconsecrated with a young bull or seven rams becomes a priest of what are no gods |
| 13:10 |
But as for us the Lord is our God and we have not forsakenabandoned him We have priests ministering to the Lord who are sonsdescendants of Aaron and Levites for their service |
| 13:11 |
They offer to the Lord every morning and every evening burnt offerings and fragrant incense of sweet spices set out the showbreadrows of bread on the table of pure gold and care for the golden lampstand so that its lamps may burn every evening; for we keep the charge of the Lord our God but you have forsakenabandoned him |
| 13:12 |
BeholdSee God is with us at our head and his priests withhave their battle trumpets to sound the call to battle against you O sonsIsraelites of Israel do not fight against the Lord the God of your fathersancestors; for you cannot succeed |
| 13:13 |
Jerobo′amJeroboam had sent an ambush around to come on them from behind; thus his troops were in front of Judah and the ambush was behind them |
| 13:14 |
AndWhen when Judah lookedturned behold the battle was beforein front of them and behind them; andThey they cried out to the Lord and the priests blew the trumpets |
| 13:15 |
Then the menpeople of Judah raised the battle shout And when the menpeople of Judah shouted God defeated Jerobo′amJeroboam and all Israel before Abi′jahAbijah and Judah |
| 13:16 |
The menIsraelites of Israel fled before Judah and God gave them into their handhands |
| 13:17 |
Abi′jahAbijah and his peoplearmy slewdefeated them with a great slaughter; sofive therehundred fellthousand slainpicked men of Israel fivefell hundredslain thousand picked men |
| 13:18 |
Thus the menIsraelites of Israel were subdued at that time and the menpeople of Judah prevailed because they relied uponon the Lord the God of their fathersancestors |
| 13:19 |
AndAbijah Abi′jah pursued Jerobo′amJeroboam and took cities from him: Bethel with its villages and Jesha′nahJeshanah with its villages and Ephron with its villages |
| 13:20 |
Jerobo′amJeroboam did not recover his power in the days of Abi′jahAbijah; and the Lord smotestruck him down and he died |
| 13:21 |
But Abi′jahAbijah grew mightystrong AndHe he took fourteen wives and hadbecame the father of twenty two sons and sixteen daughters |
| 13:22 |
The rest of the acts of Abi′jahAbijah his waysbehavior and his sayingsdeeds are written in the story of the prophet Iddo |
| 14:1 |
So Abi′jahAbijah slept with his fathersancestors and they buried him in the city of David; andHis Asa his son reignedAsa insucceeded hishim stead In his days the land had rest for ten years |
| 14:2 |
And Asa did what was good and right in the eyessight of the Lord his God |
| 14:3 |
He took away the foreign altars and the high places and broke down the pillars and hewed down the Ashe′rimsacred poles |
| 14:4 |
and commanded Judah to seek the Lord the God of their fathersancestors and to keep the law and the commandment |
| 14:5 |
He also tookremoved outfrom of all the cities of Judah the high places and the incense altars And the kingdom had rest under him |
| 14:6 |
He built fortified cities in Judah forwhile the land had rest He had no war in those years for the Lord gave him peace |
| 14:7 |
AndHe he said to Judah Let us build these cities and surround them with walls and towers gates and bars; the land is still ours because we have sought the Lord our God; we have sought him and he has given us peace on every side So they built and prospered |
| 14:8 |
And Asa had an army of three hundred thousand from Judah armed with bucklerslarge shields and spears and two hundred and eighty thousand mentroops from Benjamin thatwho carried shields and drew bows; all these were mighty men of valorwarriors |
| 14:9 |
Zerah the Ethiopian came out against them with an army of a million men and three hundred chariots and came as far as Mare′shahMareshah |
| 14:10 |
And Asa went out to meet him and they drew up their lines of battle in the valley of Zeph′athahZephathah at Mare′shahMareshah |
| 14:11 |
And Asa cried to the Lord his God O Lord there is noneno likedifference theefor toyou help between helping the mighty and the weak Help us O Lord our God for we rely on theeyou and in thyyour name we have come against this multitude O Lord thouyou artare our God; let notno manmortal prevail against theeyou |
| 14:13 |
Asa and the peoplearmy that were with him pursued them as far as Gerar and the Ethiopians fell until noneno one remained alive; for they were broken before the Lord and his army The menpeople of Judah carried away verya muchgreat quantity of booty |
| 14:14 |
AndThey theydefeated smote all the cities roundaround about Gerar for the fear of the Lord was uponon them They plundered all the cities; for there was much plunder in them |
| 14:15 |
AndThey theyalso smoteattacked the tents of those who had cattlelivestock and carried away sheep and goats in abundance and camels Then they returned to Jerusalem |
| 15:1 |
The Spiritspirit of God came upon Azari′ahAzariah the son of Oded |
| 15:2 |
andHe he went out to meet Asa and said to him Hear me Asa and all Judah and Benjamin: The Lord is with you while you are with him If you seek him he will be found by you but if you forsakeabandon him he will forsakeabandon you |
| 15:5 |
In those times thereit was nonot peacesafe tofor himanyone whoto wentgo out or tocome him who came in for great disturbances afflicted all the inhabitants of the lands |
| 15:7 |
But you take courage Do not let youyour hands be weak for your work shall be rewarded |
| 15:8 |
When Asa heard these words the prophecy of Azari′ahAzariah the son of Oded he took courage and put away the abominable idols from all the land of Judah and Benjamin and from the citiestowns whichthat he had taken in the hill country of E′phraimEphraim andHe he repaired the altar of the Lord that was in front of the vestibule of the house of the Lord |
| 15:9 |
AndHe he gathered all Judah and Benjamin and those from E′phraimEphraim Manas′sehManasseh and Simeon who were sojourningresiding as aliens with them for great numbers had deserted to him from Israel when they saw that the Lord his God was with him |
| 15:11 |
They sacrificed to the Lord on that day from the spoilbooty whichthat they had brought seven hundred oxen and seven thousand sheep |
| 15:12 |
AndThey they entered into a covenant to seek the Lord the God of their fathersancestors with all their heart and with all their soul; |
| 15:13 |
andWhoever that whoever would not seek the Lord the God of Israel should be put to death whether young or old man or woman |
| 15:14 |
They took an oath to the Lord with a loud voice and with shouting and with trumpets and with horns |
| 15:15 |
AndAll all Judah rejoiced over the oath; for they had sworn with all their heart and had sought him with their whole desire and he was found by them and the Lord gave them rest roundall aboutaround |
| 15:16 |
EvenKing Ma′acahAsa even removed his mother KingMaacah Asa removed from being queen mother because she had made an abominable image for Ashe′rahAsherah Asa cut down her image crushed it and burned it at the brookWadi Kidron |
| 15:17 |
But the high places were not taken out of Israel Nevertheless the heart of Asa was blamelesstrue all his days |
| 15:18 |
AndHe he brought into the house of God the votive gifts of his father and his own votive gifts —silver and gold and vesselsutensils |
| 16:1 |
In the thirty sixth year of the reign of Asa Ba′ashaKing kingBaasha of Israel went up against Judah and built Ramah thatto heprevent mightanyone permitfrom nogoing oneout toor gocoming outinto orthe cometerritory inof toKing Asa king of Judah |
| 16:2 |
Then Asa took silver and gold from the treasures of the house of the Lord and the kings house and sent them to King Ben ha′dadhadad king of SyriaAram who dweltresided in Damascus saying |
| 16:3 |
Let there be aan leaguealliance between me and you aslike that between my father and your father; behold I am sending to you silver and gold; go break your leaguealliance with Ba′ashaKing kingBaasha of Israel so that he may withdraw from me |
| 16:4 |
And Ben ha′dadhadad hearkenedlistened to King Asa and sent the commanders of his armies against the cities of Israel andThey they conquered I′jonIjon Dan A′belAbel ma′immaim and all the store cities of Naph′taliNaphtali |
| 16:5 |
AndWhen whenBaasha Ba′asha heard of it he stopped building Ramah and let his work cease |
| 16:6 |
Then King Asa tookbrought all Judah and they carried away the stones of Ramah and its timber with which Ba′ashaBaasha had been building and with them he built up Geba and Mizpah |
| 16:7 |
At that time Hana′ni the seer Hanani came to King Asa king of Judah and said to him Because you relied on the king of SyriaAram and did not rely on the Lord your God the army of the king of SyriaAram has escaped you |
| 16:8 |
Were not the Ethiopians and the Libyans a huge army with exceedingly many chariots and horsemencavalry Yet because you relied on the Lord he gave them into your hand |
| 16:9 |
For the eyes of the Lord runrange to and fro throughout the wholeentire earth to showstrengthen his might in behalf of those whose heart is blamelesstrue towardto him You have done foolishly in this; for from now on you will have wars |
| 16:10 |
Then Asa was angry with the seer and put him in the stocks in prison for he was in a rage with him because of this And Asa inflicted cruelties uponon some of the people at the same time |
| 16:13 |
AndThen Asa slept with his fathersancestors dying in the forty first year of his reign |
| 16:14 |
They buried him in the tomb whichthat he had hewn out for himself in the city of David They laid him on a bier whichthat had been filled with various kinds of spices prepared by the perfumers art; and they made a very great fire in his honor |
| 17:1 |
Jehosh′aphatHis his son reignedJehoshaphat insucceeded hishim stead and strengthened himself against Israel |
| 17:2 |
He placed forces in all the fortified cities of Judah and set garrisons in the land of Judah and in the cities of E′phraimEphraim whichthat Asa his father Asa had taken |
| 17:3 |
The Lord was with Jehosh′aphatJehoshaphat because he walked in the earlier ways of his father; he did not seek the Ba′alsBaals |
| 17:5 |
Therefore the Lord established the kingdom in his hand; andAll all Judah brought tribute to Jehosh′aphat;Jehoshaphat and he had great riches and honor |
| 17:6 |
His heart was courageous in the ways of the Lord; and furthermore he tookremoved the high places and the Ashe′rimsacred outpoles offrom Judah |
| 17:7 |
In the third year of his reign he sent his princesofficials Ben hail Obadi′ahObadiah Zechari′ahZechariah Nethan′elNethanel and Micai′ahMicaiah to teach in the cities of Judah; |
| 17:8 |
andWith with them were the Levites Shemai′ahShemaiah Nethani′ahNethaniah Zebadi′ahZebadiah As′ahelAsahel Shemi′ramothShemiramoth Jehon′athanJehonathan Adoni′jahAdonijah Tobi′jahTobijah and Tobadoni′jahTob adonijah; and with these Levites the priests Elish′amaElishama and Jeho′ramJehoram |
| 17:9 |
AndThey they taught in Judah having the book of the law of the Lord with them; they went aboutaround through all the cities of Judah and taught among the people |
| 17:10 |
AndThe the fear of the Lord fell uponon all the kingdoms of the lands thataround were round about Judah and they madedid nonot make war against Jehosh′aphatJehoshaphat |
| 17:11 |
Some of the Philistines brought Jehosh′aphatJehoshaphat presents and silver for tribute; and the Arabs also brought him seven thousand seven hundred rams and seven thousand seven hundred hemale goats |
| 17:12 |
AndJehoshaphat Jehosh′aphat grew steadily greater He built in Judah fortresses and storestorage cities in Judah |
| 17:13 |
andHe hecarried hadout great storesworks in the cities of Judah He had soldiers mighty menwarriors of valor in Jerusalem |
| 17:14 |
This was the muster of them by fathersancestral houses: Of Judah the commanders of the thousands: Adnah the commander with three hundred thousand mighty menwarriors of valor |
| 17:15 |
and next to him Jehoha′nanJehohanan the commander with two hundred and eighty thousand |
| 17:16 |
and next to him Amasi′ahAmasiah the son of Zichri a volunteer for the service of the Lord with two hundred thousand mighty menwarriors of valor |
| 17:17 |
Of Benjamin: Eli′adaEliada a mighty manwarrior of valor with two hundred thousand men armed with bow and shield |
| 17:18 |
and next to him Jeho′zabadJehozabad with aone hundred and eighty thousand armed for war |
| 18:1 |
Now Jehosh′aphatJehoshaphat had great riches and honor; and he made a marriage alliance with Ahab |
| 18:2 |
After some years he went down to Ahab in Samar′iaSamaria And Ahab killedslaughtered an abundance of sheep and oxen for him and for the people who were with him and induced him to go up against Ramoth gilead |
| 18:3 |
King Ahab king of Israel said to Jehosh′aphatKing kingJehoshaphat of Judah Will you go with me to Ramoth gilead He answered him I am aswith you are my people asare your people We will be with you in the war |
| 18:4 |
AndBut Jehosh′aphatJehoshaphat also said to the king of Israel Inquire first for the word of the Lord |
| 18:5 |
Then the king of Israel gathered the prophets together four hundred menof them and said to them Shall we go to battle against Ramoth gilead or shall I forbearrefrain AndThey they said Go up; for God will give it into the hand of the king |
| 18:6 |
But Jehosh′aphatJehoshaphat said Is there notno hereother another prophet of the Lord here of whom we may inquire |
| 18:7 |
AndThe the king of Israel said to Jehosh′aphatJehoshaphat There is yetstill one manother by whom we may inquire of the Lord Micai′ahMicaiah the son of Imlah; but I hate him for he never prophesies goodanything concerningfavorable about me but alwaysonly evildisaster AndJehoshaphat Jehosh′aphat said Let not the king not say sosuch a thing |
| 18:8 |
Then the king of Israel summoned an officer and said Bring quickly Micai′ahMicaiah the son of Imlah |
| 18:9 |
Now the king of Israel and Jehosh′aphatKing theJehoshaphat king of Judah were sitting on their thrones arrayed in their robes; and they were sitting at the threshing floor at the entrance of the gate of Samar′iaSamaria; and all the prophets were prophesying before them |
| 18:10 |
AndZedekiah Zedeki′ah the son of Chena′anahChenaanah made for himself horns of iron and he said Thus says the Lord: With these you shall pushgore the SyriansArameans until they are destroyed |
| 18:11 |
AndAll all the prophets prophesiedwere soprophesying the same and saidsaying Go up to Ramoth gilead and triumph; the Lord will give it into the hand of the king |
| 18:12 |
AndThe the messenger who wenthad gone to summon Micai′ahMicaiah said to him BeholdLook the words of the prophets with one accord are favorable to the king; let your word be like the word of one of them and speak favorably |
| 18:13 |
But Micai′ahMicaiah said As the Lord lives whatwhatever my God says that I will speak |
| 18:14 |
AndWhen when he had come to the king the king said to him Micai′ahMicaiah shall we go to Ramoth gilead to battle or shall I forbearrefrain AndHe he answered Go up and triumph; they will be given into your hand |
| 18:15 |
But the king said to him How many times shallmust I adjuremake you thatswear youto speaktell to me nothing but the truth in the name of the Lord |
| 18:16 |
AndThen heMicaiah said I saw all Israel scattered uponon the mountains aslike sheep thatwithout havea no shepherd; and the Lord said These have no master; let each returnone togo his home in peace |
| 18:17 |
AndThe the king of Israel said to Jehosh′aphatJehoshaphat Did I not tell you that he would not prophesy goodanything concerningfavorable about me but evilonly disaster |
| 18:18 |
AndThen Micai′ahMicaiah said Therefore hear the word of the Lord: I saw the Lord sitting on his throne andwith all the host of heaven standing onto histhe right hand and onto histhe left; of him |
| 18:19 |
andAnd the Lord said Who will entice King Ahab the king of Israel so that he may go up and fall at Ramoth gilead AndThen one said one thing and another said another |
| 18:20 |
Thenuntil a spirit came forward and stood before the Lord saying I will entice him AndThe the Lord saidasked to him ByHow what means |
| 18:21 |
AndHe hereplied said I will go forthout and will be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets AndThen hethe Lord said You are to entice him and you shall succeed; go forthout and do soit |
| 18:22 |
NowSo thereforeyou beholdsee the Lord has put a lying spirit in the mouth of these your prophets; the Lord has spokendecreed evildisaster concerningfor you |
| 18:23 |
Then Zedeki′ahZedekiah the son of Chena′anahChenaanah came nearup andto struckMicaiah Micai′ahslapped him on the cheek and said Which way did the Spiritspirit of the Lord gopass from me to speak to you |
| 18:24 |
AndMicaiah Micai′ahreplied saidYou Beholdwill youfind shallout see on that day when you go intoin to hide in an inner chamber to hide yourself |
| 18:25 |
AndThe the king of Israel saidthen Seizeordered Micai′ahTake Micaiah and takereturn him back to Amon the governor of the city and to Jo′ashJoash the kings son; |
| 18:26 |
and say Thus says the king: Put this fellow in prison and feed him withon scantreduced farerations of bread and water until I return in peace |
| 18:27 |
AndMicaiah Micai′ah said If you return in peace the Lord has not spoken by me And he said Hear you peoples all of you peoples |
| 18:28 |
So the king of Israel and Jehosh′aphatKing theJehoshaphat king of Judah went up to Ramoth gilead |
| 18:29 |
AndThe the king of Israel said to Jehosh′aphatJehoshaphat I will disguise myself and go into battle but you wear your robes AndSo the king of Israel disguised himself; and they went into battle |
| 18:30 |
Now the king of SyriaAram had commanded the captains of his chariots Fight with neitherno one small noror great but only with the king of Israel |
| 18:31 |
AndWhen when the captains of the chariots saw Jehosh′aphatJehoshaphat they said It is the king of Israel So they turned to fight against him; and Jehosh′aphatJehoshaphat cried out and the Lord helped him God drew them away from him |
| 18:33 |
But a certain man drew his bow atand aunknowingly venture and struck the king of Israel between the scale armor and the breastplate; thereforeso he said to the driver of his chariot Turn aboutaround and carry me out of the battle for I am wounded |
| 18:34 |
AndThe thebattle batle grew hot that day and the king of Israel propped himself up in his chariot facing the SyriansArameans until evening; then at sunset he died |
| 19:1 |
Jehosh′aphatKing theJehoshaphat king of Judah returned in safety to his house in Jerusalem |
| 19:2 |
But Jehu the son of Hana′niHanani the seer went out to meet him and said to King Jehosh′aphatJehoshaphat Should you help the wicked and love those who hate the Lord Because of this wrath has gone out against you from the Lord |
| 19:3 |
Nevertheless some good is found in you for you destroyed the Ashe′rahssacred poles out of the land and have set your heart to seek God |
| 19:4 |
Jehosh′aphatJehoshaphat dweltresided at Jerusalem; andthen he went out again among the people from Beer sheba to the hill country of E′phraimEphraim and brought them back to the Lord the God of their fathersancestors |
| 19:6 |
and said to the judges Consider what you doare doing for you judge not foron manbehalf of human beings but foron the LordLords behalf; he is with you in giving judgment |
| 19:7 |
Now then let the fear of the Lord be upon you; take heedcare what you do for there is no perversion of justice with the Lord our God or partiality or taking of bribes |
| 19:8 |
Moreover in Jerusalem Jehosh′aphatJehoshaphat appointed certain Levites and priests and heads of families of Israel to give judgment for the Lord and to decide disputed cases They had their seat at Jerusalem |
| 19:9 |
AndHe he charged them: ThusThis is how you shall doact: in the fear of the Lord in faithfulness and with your whole heart:; |
| 19:10 |
whenever a case comes to you from your brethrenkindred who live in their cities concerning bloodshed law or commandment statutes or ordinances then you shall instruct them so that they may not incur guilt before the Lord and wrath may not come uponon you and your brethrenkindred ThusDo youso shall do and you will not incur guilt |
| 19:11 |
AndSee beholdAmariah Amari′ah the chief priest is over you in all matters of the Lord; and Zebadi′ahZebadiah the son of Ish′maelIshmael the governor of the house of Judah in all the kings matters; and the Levites will serve you as officers Deal courageously and may the Lord be with the uprightgood |
| 20:1 |
After this the Moabites and Ammonites and with them some of the MeMeunites u′nites came against Jehosh′aphatJehoshaphat for battle |
| 20:2 |
SomeMessengers men came and told Jehosh′aphatJehoshaphat A great multitude is coming against you from Edom from beyond the sea; andalready behold they are inat Haz′azonHazazon ta′martamar that is En ge′digedi |
| 20:3 |
ThenJehoshaphat Jehosh′aphatwas fearedafraid; andhe set himself to seek the Lord and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah |
| 20:4 |
And Judah assembled to seek help from the Lord; from all the citiestowns of Judah they came to seek the Lord |
| 20:5 |
AndJehoshaphat Jehosh′aphat stood in the assembly of Judah and Jerusalem in the house of the Lord before the new court |
| 20:6 |
and said O Lord God of our fathersancestors artare thouyou not God in heaven DostDo thouyou not rule over all the kingdoms of the nations In thyyour hand are power and might so that noneno one is able to withstand theeyou |
| 20:7 |
DidstDid thouyou not O our God drive out the inhabitants of this land before thyyour people Israel and give it forforever ever to the descendants of Abrahamyour thy friend Abraham |
| 20:8 |
AndThey they have dweltlived in it and in it have built theeyou in it a sanctuary for thyyour name saying |
| 20:9 |
If evildisaster comes upon us the sword judgment or pestilence or famine we will stand before this house and before theeyou for thyyour name is in this house and cry to theeyou in our afflictiondistress and thouyou wiltwill hear and save |
| 20:10 |
AndSee now behold the menpeople of Ammon and Moab and Mount Se′irSeir whom thouyou wouldestwould not let Israel invade when they came from the land of Egypt and whom they avoided and did not destroy— |
| 20:11 |
behold they reward us by coming to drive us out of thyyour possession whichthat thouyou hasthave given us to inherit |
| 20:12 |
O our God wiltwill thouyou not execute judgment upon them For we are powerless against this great multitude that is coming against us We do not know what to do but our eyes are uponon theeyou |
| 20:13 |
Meanwhile all the men of Judah stood before the Lord with their little ones their wives and their children |
| 20:14 |
AndThen the Spiritspirit of the Lord came upon Jaha′zielJahaziel the son of Zechari′ahZechariah son of Benai′ahBenaiah son of JeJeiel i′el son of Mattani′ahMattaniah a Levite of the sons of Asaph in the midstmiddle of the assembly |
| 20:15 |
AndHe he said HearkenListen all Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem and King Jehosh′aphatJehoshaphat: Thus says the Lord to you: FearDo not andfear or be not dismayed at this great multitude; for the battle is not yours but Gods |
| 20:16 |
Tomorrow go down against them; behold they will come up by the ascent of Ziz; you will find them at the end of the valley eastbefore of the wilderness of Jeru′elJeruel |
| 20:17 |
YouThis willbattle is not needfor you to fight in this battle; take your position stand still and see the victory of the Lord on your behalf O Judah and Jerusalem FearDo not andfear or be not dismayed; tomorrow go out against them and the Lord will be with you |
| 20:18 |
Then Jehosh′aphatJehoshaphat bowed hisdown head with his face to the ground and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem fell down before the Lord worshiping the Lord |
| 20:19 |
And the Levites of the Ko′hathitesKohathites and the Ko′rahitesKorahites stood up to praise the Lord the God of Israel with a very loud voice |
| 20:20 |
AndThey they rose early in the morning and went out into the wilderness of Teko′aTekoa; and as they went out Jehosh′aphatJehoshaphat stood and said HearListen to me O Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem Believe in the Lord your God and you will be established; believe his prophets and you will succeed |
| 20:21 |
AndWhen when he had taken counsel with the people he appointed those who were to sing to the Lord and praise him in holy arraysplendor as they went before the army andsaying say Give thanks to the Lord for his steadfast love endures for ever 22 And when they began to sing and praise the Lord set an ambush against the men of Ammon Moab and Mount Se′ir who had come against Judah so that they were routed forever |
| 20:23 |
For the menAmmonites of Ammon and Moab roseattacked against the inhabitants of Mount Se′irSeir destroying them utterly; and when they had made an end of the inhabitants of Se′irSeir they all helped to destroy one another |
| 20:24 |
When Judah came to the watchtower of the wilderness they looked toward the multitude; and behold they were deadcorpses bodies lying on the ground; noneno one had escaped |
| 20:25 |
When Jehosh′aphatJehoshaphat and his people came to take the spoilbooty from them they found cattlelivestock in great numbers goods clothing and precious things which they took for themselves until they could carry no more They werespent three days in taking the spoilbooty itbecause wasof soits muchabundance |
| 20:26 |
On the fourth day they assembled in the Valley of Ber′acahBeracah for there they blessed the Lord; therefore the name of that place has been called the Valley of Ber′acahBeracah to this day |
| 20:27 |
Then theyall returnedthe everypeople man of Judah and Jerusalem andwith Jehosh′aphatJehoshaphat at their head returningreturned to Jerusalem with joy for the Lord had madeenabled them to rejoice over their enemies |
| 20:29 |
AndThe the fear of God came on all the kingdoms of the countries when they heard that the Lord had fought against the enemies of Israel |
| 20:30 |
SoAnd the realm of Jehosh′aphatJehoshaphat was quiet for his God gave him rest roundall aboutaround |
| 20:31 |
ThusSo Jehosh′aphatJehoshaphat reigned over Judah He was thirty five years old when he began to reign; and he reigned twenty five years in Jerusalem His mothers name was Azu′bahAzubah the daughter of Shilhi |
| 20:32 |
He walked in the way of Asa his father Asa and did not turn aside from it; hedoing did what was right in the sight of the Lord |
| 20:33 |
TheYet the high places however were not taken awayremoved; the people had not yet set their hearts upon the God of their fathersancestors |
| 20:34 |
Now the rest of the acts of Jehosh′aphatJehoshaphat from first to last are written in the chroniclesAnnals of Jehu the son of Hana′niHanani which are recorded in the Book of the Kings of Israel |
| 20:35 |
After this Jehosh′aphatKing kingJehoshaphat of Judah joined with Ahazi′ahKing kingAhaziah of Israel who did wickedly |
| 20:36 |
He joined him in building ships to go to Tarshish; and they built the ships in E′zionEzion ge′bergeber |
| 20:37 |
Then Elie′zerEliezer the son of Dodav′ahuDodavahu of Mare′shahMareshah prophesied against Jehosh′aphatJehoshaphat saying Because you have joined with Ahazi′ahAhaziah the Lord will destroy what you have made And the ships were wrecked and were not able to go to Tarshish |
| 21:1 |
Jehosh′aphatJehoshaphat slept with his fathersancestors and was buried with his fathersancestors in the city of David; and Jeho′ram his son reignedJehoram insucceeded hishim stead |
| 21:2 |
He had brothers the sons of Jehosh′aphatJehoshaphat: Azari′ahAzariah Jehi′elJehiel Zechari′ahZechariah Azari′ahAzariah Michael and Shephati′ahShephatiah; all these were the sons of Jehosh′aphatKing kingJehoshaphat of Judah |
| 21:3 |
Their father gave them greatmany gifts of silver gold and valuable possessions together with fortified cities in Judah; but he gave the kingdom to Jeho′ramJehoram because he was the firstfirstborn born |
| 21:4 |
When Jeho′ramJehoram had ascended the throne of his father and was established he slewput all his brothers withto the sword and also some of the princesofficials of Israel |
| 21:5 |
Jeho′ramJehoram was thirty two years old when he becamebegan kingto andreign; he reigned eight years in Jerusalem |
| 21:6 |
AndHe he walked in the way of the kings of Israel as the house of Ahab had done; for the daughter of Ahab was his wife AndHe he did what was evil in the sight of the Lord |
| 21:7 |
Yet the Lord would not destroy the house of David because of the covenant whichthat he had made with David and since he had promised to give a lamp to him and to his sonsdescendants for everforever |
| 21:8 |
In his days Edom revolted fromagainst the rule of Judah and set up a king of their own |
| 21:9 |
Then Jeho′ramJehoram passedcrossed over with his commanders and all his chariots andHe heset roseout by night and smoteattacked the E′domitesEdomites who had surrounded him and his chariot commanders |
| 21:10 |
So Edom revoltedhas frombeen in revolt against the rule of Judah to this day At that time Libnah also revolted fromagainst his rule because he had forsaken the Lord the God of his fathersancestors |
| 21:12 |
AndA a letter came to him from Eli′jah the prophet Elijah saying: Thus says the Lord the God of David your father David: Because you have not walked in the ways of Jehosh′aphat your father Jehoshaphat or in the ways of King Asa king of Judah |
| 21:13 |
but have walked in the way of the kings of Israel and have led Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem into unfaithfulness as the house of Ahab led Israel into unfaithfulness and alsobecause you also have killed your brothers members of your fathers house who were better than yourself; |
| 21:14 |
beholdsee the Lord will bring a great plague on your people your children your wives and all your possessions |
| 21:15 |
and you yourself will have a severe sickness with a disease of your bowels until your bowels come out day after day because of the disease day by day |
| 21:16 |
AndThe the Lord stirredaroused up against Jeho′ramJehoram the anger of the Philistines and of the Arabs who are near the Ethiopians; |
| 21:17 |
andThey they came up against Judah and invaded it and carried away all the possessions they found that belonged to the kings house andalong alsowith his sons and his wives so that no son was left to him except Jeho′ahazJehoahaz his youngest son |
| 21:18 |
AndAfter after all this the Lord smotestruck him in his bowels with an incurable disease |
| 21:19 |
In course of time at the end of two years his bowels came out because of the disease and he died in great agony His people made no fire in his honor like the fires made for his fathersancestors |
| 21:20 |
He was thirty two years old when he began to reign; and he reigned eight years in Jerusalem; andHe he departed with no ones regret They buried him in the city of David but not in the tombs of the kings |
| 22:1 |
AndThe the inhabitants of Jerusalem made Ahazi′ah his youngest son Ahaziah king inas his steadsuccessor; for the bandtroops ofwho men that came with the Arabs to the camp had slainkilled all the older sons So Ahazi′ahAhaziah the son of Jeho′ramJehoram reigned as king of Judah reigned |
| 22:2 |
Ahazi′ahAhaziah was forty two years old when he began to reign; and he reigned one year in Jerusalem His mothers name was Athali′ahAthaliah thea granddaughter of Omri |
| 22:4 |
He did what was evil in the sight of the Lord as the house of Ahab had done; for after the death of his father they were his counselors to his undoingruin |
| 22:5 |
He even followed their counseladvice and went with Jeho′ramJehoram the son of King Ahab king of Israel to make war against Haz′aelKing kingHazael of SyriaAram at Ramoth gilead AndThe theArameans Syrians wounded Joram |
| 22:6 |
and he returned to be healed in Jezreel of the wounds whichthat he had received at Ramah when he fought againstKing Haz′aelHazael king of SyriaAram And Ahazi′ahAhaziah the son of Jeho′ramKing kingJehoram of Judah went down to see Joram the son of Ahab in Jezreel because he was sick |
| 22:7 |
But it was ordained by God that the downfall of Ahazi′ahAhaziah should come about through his going to visit Joram For when he came there he went out with Jeho′ramJehoram to meet Jehu the son of Nimshi whom the Lord had anointed to destroy the house of Ahab |
| 22:8 |
AndWhen when Jehu was executing judgment uponon the house of Ahab he met the princesofficials of Judah and the sons of Ahazi′ahsAhaziahs brothers who attended Ahazi′ahAhaziah and he killed them |
| 22:9 |
He searched for Ahazi′ahAhaziah andwho he was captured while hiding in Samar′iaSamaria and he was brought to Jehu and put to death They buried him for they said He is the grandson of Jehosh′aphatJehoshaphat who sought the Lord with all his heart And the house of Ahazi′ahAhaziah had no one able to rule the kingdom |
| 22:10 |
Now when Athali′ahAthaliah theAhaziahs mother of Ahazi′ah saw that her son was dead she aroseset andabout destroyedto destroy all the royal family of the house of Judah |
| 22:11 |
But JehoJehoshabeath shab′ethe athkings the daughter of the king took Jo′ashJoash the son of Ahazi′ahAhaziah and stole him away from among the kings sonschildren who were about to be slainkilled; and she put him and his nurse in a bedchamberbedroom Thus JehoJehoshabeath shab′e ath the daughter of King Jeho′ramJehoram and wife of Jehoi′ada the priest Jehoiada—because she was a sister of Ahazi′ah Ahaziah—hid him from Athali′ahAthaliah so that she did not slaykill him; |
| 22:12 |
and he remained with them six years hidhidden in the house of God while Athali′ahAthaliah reigned over the land |
| 23:1 |
But in the seventh year Jehoi′adaJehoiada took courage and entered into a compact with the commanders of the hundreds Azari′ahAzariah the son of Jero′hamJeroham Ish′maelIshmael the son of Jehoha′nanJehohanan Azari′ahAzariah the son of Obed MaMaaseiah asei′ah the son of Adai′ahAdaiah and Elisha′phatElishaphat the son of Zichri |
| 23:2 |
AndThey they went aboutaround through Judah and gathered the Levites from all the citiestowns of Judah and the heads of fathersfamilies houses of Israel and they came to Jerusalem |
| 23:3 |
AndThen all the whole assembly made a covenant with the king in the house of God AndJehoiada Jehoi′ada said to them BeholdHere is the kings son Let him reign as the Lord spokepromised concerning the sons of David |
| 23:4 |
This is thewhat thingyou thatare youto shall do: one third of you priests and Levites who come offon duty on the sabbath one third shall be gatekeepers |
| 23:5 |
and one third shall be at the kings house and one third at the Gate of the Foundation; and all the people shall be in the courts of the house of the Lord |
| 23:6 |
LetDo nonot onelet anyone enter the house of the Lord except the priests and ministering Levites; they may enter for they are holy but all the other people shall keepobserve the chargeinstructions of the Lord |
| 23:7 |
The Levites shall surround the king each with his weapons in his hand; and whoever enters the house shall be slainkilled BeStay with the king whenin hehis comescomings in and when he goes outgoings |
| 23:8 |
The Levites and all Judah did according to all that Jehoi′ada the priest Jehoiada commanded; They each brought his men who were to gocome offon duty on the sabbath with those who were to comego onoff duty on the sabbath; for Jehoi′ada the priest Jehoiada did not dismiss the divisions |
| 23:9 |
AndThe Jehoi′adapriest theJehoiada priest delivered to the captains the spears and the large and small shields that had been King Davids which were in the house of God; |
| 23:10 |
and he set all the people as a guard for the king everyeveryone man with his weapon in his hand from the south side of the house to the north side of the house around the altar and the house |
| 23:11 |
Then he brought out the kings son and put the crown uponon him and gave him the testimonycovenant; and they proclaimed him king and Jehoi′adaJehoiada and his sons anointed him; and they saidshouted Long live the king |
| 23:12 |
When Athali′ahAthaliah heard the noise of the people running and praising the king she went into the house of the Lord to the people; |
| 23:13 |
and when she looked there was the king standing by his pillar at the entrance and the captains and the trumpeters beside the king and all the people of the land rejoicing and blowing trumpets and the singers with their musical instruments leading in the celebration AndAthaliah Athali′ahtore rent her clothes and cried Treason Treason |
| 23:14 |
Then Jehoi′ada the priest Jehoiada brought out the captains who were set over the army saying to them Bring her out between the ranks; anyanyone one who follows her is to be slainput withto the sword For the priest said Do not slayput her to death in the house of the Lord |
| 23:15 |
So they laid hands on her; and she went into the entrance of the horseHorse gateGate of the kings house and there they slewput her thereto death |
| 23:16 |
AndJehoiada Jehoi′ada made a covenant between himself and all the people and the king that they should be the Lords people |
| 23:17 |
Then all the people went to the house of Ba′alBaal and tore it down; his altars and his images they broke in pieces and they slewkilled Mattan the priest of Ba′alBaal beforein front of the altars |
| 23:18 |
AndJehoiada Jehoi′adaassigned postedthe watchmencare forof the house of the Lord underto the directionlevitical of the Levitical priests and the Levites whom David had organized to be in charge of the house of the Lord to offer burnt offerings to the Lord as it is written in the law of Moses with rejoicing and with singing according to the order of David |
| 23:20 |
And he took the captains the nobles the governors of the people and all the people of the land; and they brought the king down from the house of the Lord marching through the upper gate to the kings house AndThey they set the king uponon the royal throne |
| 23:21 |
So all the people of the land rejoiced; and the city was quiet after Athali′ahAthaliah had been slainkilled with the sword |
| 24:1 |
Jo′ashJoash was seven years old when he began to reign; and he reigned forty years in Jerusalem; his mothers name was Zib′iahZibiah of Beer sheba |
| 24:2 |
AndJoash Jo′ash did what was right in the eyessight of the Lord all the days of Jehoi′ada the priest Jehoiada |
| 24:3 |
Jehoi′adaJehoiada got two wives for him two wives and he hadbecame the father of sons and daughters |
| 24:4 |
AfterSome thistime Jo′ashafterward Joash decided to restore the house of the Lord |
| 24:5 |
AndHe heassembled gathered the priests and the Levites and said to them Go out to the cities of Judah and gather money from all Israel money to repair the house of your God from year toby year; and see that you hastenact thequickly matter But the Levites did not hastenact itquickly |
| 24:6 |
So the king summoned Jehoi′adaJehoiada the chief and said to him Why have you not required the Levites to bring in from Judah and Jerusalem the tax levied by Moses the servant of the Lord on the congregation of Israel for the tent of testimonythe covenant |
| 24:7 |
For the sonschildren of Athali′ahAthaliah that wicked woman had broken into the house of God; and had alsoeven used all the dedicated things of the house of the Lord for the Ba′alsBaals |
| 24:8 |
So the king commandedgave command and they made a chest and set it outside the gate of the house of the Lord |
| 24:9 |
AndA proclamation was made throughout Judah and Jerusalem to bring in for the Lord the tax that Moses the servant of God laid uponon Israel in the wilderness |
| 24:10 |
AndAll all the princesleaders and all the people rejoiced and brought their tax and dropped it into the chest until theyit hadwas finishedfull |
| 24:11 |
AndWhenever whenever the chest was brought to the kings officers by the Levites when they saw that there was mucha large amount of money in it the kings secretary and the officer of the chief priest would come and empty the chest and take it and return it to its place ThusSo they did day after day and collected money in abundance |
| 24:12 |
AndThe the king and Jehoi′adaJehoiada gave it to those who had charge of the work of the house of the Lord and they hired masons and carpenters to restore the house of the Lord and also workers in iron and bronze to repair the house of the Lord |
| 24:13 |
So those who were engaged in the work labored and the repairing went forward inat their hands and they restored the house of God to its proper condition and strengthened it |
| 24:14 |
AndWhen when they had finished they brought the rest of the money beforeto the king and Jehoi′adaJehoiada and with it were made utensils for the house of the Lord bothutensils for the service and for the burnt offerings and dishesladles for incense and vessels of gold and silver AndThey they offered burnt offerings in the house of the Lord continuallyregularly all the days of Jehoi′adaJehoiada |
| 24:15 |
But Jehoi′adaJehoiada grew old and full of days and died; he was aone hundred and thirty years old at his death |
| 24:16 |
And they buried him in the city of David among the kings because he had done good in Israel and towardfor God and his house |
| 24:17 |
Now after the death of Jehoi′adaJehoiada the princesofficials of Judah came and did obeisance to the king; then the king harkenedlistened to them |
| 24:18 |
AndThey theyabandoned forsook the house of the Lord the God of their fathersancestors and served the Ashe′rimsacred poles and the idols And wrath came upon Judah and Jerusalem for this their guilt of theirs |
| 24:19 |
Yet he sent prophets among them to bring them back to the Lord; thesethey testified against them but they would not give heedlisten |
| 24:20 |
Then the Spiritspirit of God took possession of Zechari′ahZechariah the son of Jehoi′ada the priest Jehoiada; and he stood above the people and said to them Thus says God: Why do you transgress the commandments of the Lord so that you cannot prosper Because you have forsaken the Lord he has also forsaken you |
| 24:21 |
But they conspired against him and by command of the king they stoned him withto stonesdeath in the court of the house of the Lord |
| 24:22 |
ThusKing Jo′ashJoash the king did not remember the kindness whichthat Jehoi′adaJehoiada Zechari′ahsZechariahs father had shown him but killed his son AndAs when he was dying he said May the Lord see and avenge |
| 24:23 |
At the end of the year the army of theAram Syrians came up against Jo′ashJoash They came to Judah and Jerusalem and destroyed all the princesofficials of the people from among thethem people and sent all theirthe spoilbooty they took to the king of Damascus |
| 24:24 |
ThoughAlthough the army of theAram Syrians had come with few men the Lord delivered into their hand a very great army because they had forsakenabandoned the Lord the God of their fathersancestors Thus they executed judgment on Jo′ashJoash |
| 24:25 |
When they had departedwithdrawn from him leaving him severely wounded his servants conspired against him because of the blood of the son of Jehoi′ada the priest Jehoiada and slewthey killed him on his bed So he died; and they buried him in the city of David but they did not bury him in the tombs of the kings |
| 24:26 |
Those who conspired against him were Zabad the son of Shim′eShimeath ath the AmmonitessAmmonite and Jeho′zabadJehozabad the son of Shimrith the MoabitessMoabite |
| 24:27 |
Accounts of his sons and of the many oracles against him and of the rebuilding of the house of God are written in the Commentary on the Book of the Kings And Amazi′ah his son reignedAmaziah insucceeded his steadhim |
| 25:1 |
Amazi′ahAmaziah was twenty five years old when he began to reign and he reigned twenty nine years in Jerusalem His mothers name was JehoJehoaddan ad′dan of Jerusalem |
| 25:2 |
AndHe he did what was right in the eyessight of the Lord yet not with a blamelesstrue heart |
| 25:3 |
AndAs as soon as the royal power was firmly in his hand he killed his servants who had slainmurdered his father the king his father |
| 25:4 |
But he did not put their children to death according to what is written in the law in the book of Moses where the Lord commanded The fathersparents shall not be put to death for the children or the children be put to death for the fathersparents; but everyall man shall diebe put to death for histheir own sinsins |
| 25:5 |
ThenAmaziah Amazi′ah assembled the menpeople of Judah and set them by fathersancestral houses under commanders of the thousands and of the hundreds for all Judah and Benjamin He mustered those twenty years old and upward and found that they were three hundred thousand picked mentroops fit for war able to handle spear and shield |
| 25:6 |
He also hired alsoone a hundred thousand mighty menwarriors of valor from Israel for aone hundred talents of silver |
| 25:7 |
But a man of God came to him and said O king do not let the army of Israel go with you for the Lord is not with Israel with —all these E′phraimitesEphraimites |
| 25:8 |
ButRather ifgo youby supposeyourself thatand inact; this way you will be strong forin warbattle or God will castfling you down before the enemy; for God has power to help or to castoverthrow down |
| 25:9 |
AndAmaziah Amazi′ah said to the man of God But what shall we do about the hundred talents whichthat I have given to the army of Israel The man of God answered The Lord is able to give you much more than this |
| 25:10 |
Then Amazi′ahAmaziah discharged the army that had come to him from E′phraimEphraim toletting them go home again AndBut they became very angry with Judah and returned home in fierce anger |
| 25:11 |
ButAmaziah Amazi′ah took courage and led out his people; andhe went to the Valley of Salt and smotestruck down ten thousand men of Se′irSeir |
| 25:12 |
The menpeople of Judah captured another ten thousand alive and took them to the top of aSela rock and threw them down from the top of theSela rock;so andthat theyall of them were all dashed to pieces |
| 25:13 |
But the men of the army whom Amazi′ahAmaziah sent back not letting them go with him to battle fell uponon the cities of Judah from Samar′iaSamaria to Beth hor′onhoron; andthey killed three thousand people in them and took much spoilbooty |
| 25:14 |
AfterNow Amazi′ahafter Amaziah came from the slaughter of the E′domitesEdomites he brought the gods of the menpeople of Se′irSeir and set them up as his gods and worshiped them making offerings to them |
| 25:15 |
ThereforeThe the Lord was angry with Amazi′ahAmaziah and sent to him a prophet who said to him Why have you resorted to thea peoples gods ofwho acould people which did not deliver their own people from your hand |
| 25:16 |
But as he was speaking the king said to him Have we made you a royal counselor Stop Why should you be put to death So the prophet stopped but said I know that God has determined to destroy you because you have done this and have not listened to my counseladvice |
| 25:17 |
Then Amazi′ahKing kingAmaziah of Judah took counsel and sent to Jo′ashKing theJoash son of Jeho′ahazJehoahaz son of Jehu king of Israel saying Come let us look one another in the face |
| 25:18 |
AndKing Jo′ashJoash the king of Israel sent word to Amazi′ahKing kingAmaziah of Judah A thistlethornbush on Lebanon sent to a cedar on Lebanon saying Give your daughter to my son for a wife; andbut a wild beastanimal of Lebanon passed by and trampled down the thistlethornbush |
| 25:19 |
You say See I have smittendefeated Edom and your heart has lifted you up in boastfulness ButNow now stay at home; why should you provoke trouble so that you fall you and Judah with you |
| 25:20 |
But Amazi′ahAmaziah would not listen; for —it was ofGods Goddoing in order thatto hehand might give them intoover the hand of their enemies because they had sought the gods of Edom |
| 25:21 |
So Jo′ashKing kingJoash of Israel went up; and he and Amazi′ahKing kingAmaziah of Judah faced one another in battle at Beth she′meshshemesh which belongs to Judah |
| 25:22 |
And Judah was defeated by Israel; andeveryone every man fled to his home |
| 25:23 |
AndKing Jo′ashJoash king of Israel captured Amazi′ahKing kingAmaziah of Judah the son of Jo′ashJoash son of Ahazi′ahAhaziah at Beth she′meshshemesh; andhe brought him to Jerusalem and broke down the wall of Jerusalem for four hundred cubits from the E′phraimEphraim Gate to the Corner Gate a distance of four hundred cubits |
| 25:24 |
AndHe he seized all the gold and silver and all the vessels that were found in the house of God and O′bedObed e′domedom with them; he seized also the treasuries of the kings house andalso hostages; andthen he returned to Samar′iaSamaria |
| 25:25 |
Amazi′ahKing theAmaziah son of Jo′ashJoash king of Judah lived fifteen years after the death of Jo′ashKing theJoash son of Jeho′ahazJehoahaz king of Israel |
| 25:26 |
Now the rest of the deeds of Amazi′ahAmaziah from first to last are they not written in the Book of the Kings of Judah and Israel |
| 25:27 |
From the time whenthat heAmaziah turned away from the Lord they made a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem and he fled to Lachish But they sent after him to Lachish and slewkilled him there |
| 25:28 |
AndThey they brought him uponback on horses; and he was buried with his fathersancestors in the city of David |
| 26:1 |
AndThen all the people of Judah took Uzzi′ahUzziah who was sixteen years old and made him king insteadto ofsucceed his father Amazi′ahAmaziah |
| 26:2 |
He builtrebuilt Eloth and restored it to Judah after the king slept with his fathersancestors |
| 26:3 |
Uzzi′ahUzziah was sixteen years old when he began to reign and he reigned fifty two years in Jerusalem His mothers name was Jecoli′ahJecoliah of Jerusalem |
| 26:4 |
AndHe he did what was right in the eyessight of the Lord accordingjust toas all that his father Amazi′ahAmaziah had done |
| 26:5 |
He set himself to seek God in the days of Zechari′ahZechariah who instructed him in the fear of God; and as long as he sought the Lord God made him prosper |
| 26:6 |
He went out and made war against the Philistines and broke down the wall of Gath and the wall of Jabneh and the wall of Ashdod; and he built cities in the territory of Ashdod and elsewhere among the Philistines |
| 26:7 |
God helped him against the Philistines and against the Arabs thatwho dweltlived in Gurba′alGur baal and against the MeMeunites u′nites |
| 26:8 |
The Ammonites paid tribute to Uzzi′ahUzziah and his fame spread even to the border of Egypt for he became very strong |
| 26:9 |
Moreover Uzzi′ahUzziah built towers in Jerusalem at the Corner Gate and at the Valley Gate and at the Angle and fortified them |
| 26:10 |
AndHe he built towers in the wilderness and hewed out many cisterns for he had large herds both in the Shephe′lahShephelah and in the plain and he had farmers and vinedressers in the hills and in the fertile lands for he loved the soil |
| 26:11 |
Moreover Uzzi′ahUzziah had an army of soldiers fit for war in divisions according to the numbers in the muster made by Je i′el the secretary Jeiel and Ma asei′ah the officer Maaseiah under the direction of Hanani′ahHananiah one of the kings commanders |
| 26:12 |
The whole number of the heads of fathersancestral houses of mighty menwarriors of valor was two thousand six hundred |
| 26:13 |
Under their command was an army of three hundred and seven thousand five hundred who could make war with mighty power to help the king against the enemy |
| 26:14 |
AndUzziah Uzzi′ahprovided prepared for all the army the shields spears helmets coats of mail bows and stones for slinging |
| 26:15 |
In Jerusalem he madeset enginesup machines invented by skilfulskilled menworkers to be on the towers and the corners tofor shootshooting arrows and greatlarge stones And his fame spread far for he was marvelously helped tilluntil he wasbecame strong |
| 26:16 |
But when he washad become strong he grew proud to his destruction For he was false to the Lord his God and entered the temple of the Lord to burnmake incenseoffering on the altar of incense |
| 26:17 |
But Azari′ah the priest Azariah went in after him with eighty priests of the Lord who were men of valor; |
| 26:18 |
and they withstood King Uzzi′ahUzziah and said to him It is not for you Uzzi′ahUzziah to burnmake incenseoffering to the Lord but for the priests the sonsdescendants of Aaron who are consecrated to burnmake incenseoffering Go out of the sanctuary; for you have done wrong and it will bring you no honor from the Lord God |
| 26:19 |
Then Uzzi′ahUzziah was angry Now he had a censer in his hand to burnmake incenseoffering and when he became angry with the priests leprosya leprous disease broke out on his forehead in the presence of the priests in the house of the Lord by the altar of incense |
| 26:20 |
AndWhen Azari′ah the chief priest Azariah and all the priests looked at him and behold he was leprous in his forehead AndThey theyhurried thrust him out quickly and he himself hastenedhurried to goget out because the Lord had smittenstruck him |
| 26:21 |
And King Uzzi′ahUzziah was aleprous leper to the day of his death and being aleprous leperlived dwelt in a separate house for he was excluded from the house of the Lord AndHis son Jotham hiswas sonin wascharge overof the kingspalace householdof the king governing the people of the land |
| 26:22 |
Now the rest of the acts of Uzzi′ahUzziah from first to last Isaiah the prophet theIsaiah son of Amoz wrote |
| 26:23 |
AndUzziah Uzzi′ah slept with his fathersancestors; and they buried him withnear his fathersancestors in the burial field whichthat belonged to the kings for they said He is aleprous leperHis Andson Jotham hissucceeded son reigned in his steadhim |
| 27:1 |
Jotham was twenty five years old when he began to reign; and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem His mothers name was Jeru′shahJerushah the daughter of Zadok |
| 27:2 |
AndHe he did what was right in the eyessight of the Lord accordingjust toas all that his father Uzzi′ahUzziah had done—only he did not invade the temple of the Lord But the people still followed corrupt practices |
| 27:3 |
He built the upper gate of the house of the Lord and did muchextensive building on the wall of Ophel |
| 27:5 |
He fought with the king of the Ammonites and prevailed against them AndThe the Ammonites gave him that year aone hundred talents of silver and ten thousand cors of wheat and ten thousand of barley The Ammonites paid him the same amount in the second and the third years |
| 27:6 |
So Jotham became mightystrong because he ordered his ways before the Lord his God |
| 27:7 |
Now the rest of the acts of Jotham and all his wars and his ways behold they are written in the Book of the Kings of Israel and Judah |
| 27:8 |
He was twenty five years old when he began to reign; and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem |
| 27:9 |
And Jotham slept with his fathersancestors and they buried him in the city of David; and Ahaz his son reignedAhaz insucceeded his steadhim |
| 28:1 |
Ahaz was twenty years old when he began to reign; and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem AndHe he did not do what was right in the eyessight of the Lord likeas his fatherancestor David had done |
| 28:2 |
but he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel He even made moltencast images for the Ba′alsBaals; |
| 28:3 |
and he burnedmade incenseofferings in the valley of the son of Hinnom and burnedmade his sons aspass anthrough offeringfire according to the abominable practices of the nations whom the Lord drove out before the people of Israel |
| 28:4 |
AndHe he sacrificed and burnedmade incenseofferings on the high places and on the hills and under every green tree |
| 28:5 |
Therefore the Lord his God gave him into the hand of the king of SyriaAram who defeated him and took captive a great number of his people and brought them to Damascus He was also given into the hand of the king of Israel who defeated him with great slaughter |
| 28:6 |
For Pekah the son of Remali′ahRemaliah slewkilled aone hundred and twenty thousand in Judah in one day all of them menvaliant ofwarriors valor because they had forsakenabandoned the Lord the God of their fathersancestors |
| 28:7 |
And Zichri a mighty manwarrior of E′phraimEphraim slewkilled Ma asei′ah the kings son andMaaseiah Azri′kamAzrikam the commander of the palace and Elka′nahElkanah the next in authority to the king |
| 28:8 |
The menpeople of Israel took captive two hundred thousand of their kinsfolkkin women sons and daughters; they also took much spoilbooty from them and brought the spoilbooty to Samar′iaSamaria |
| 28:9 |
But a prophet of the Lord was there whose name was Oded; and he went out to meet the army that came to Samar′iaSamaria and said to them BeholdBecause because the Lord the God of your fathersancestors was angry with Judah he gave them into your hand but you have slainkilled them in a rage whichthat has reached up to heaven |
| 28:10 |
AndNow now you intend to subjugate the people of Judah and Jerusalem male and female as your slaves HaveBut what have you notexcept sins of your own against the Lord your God |
| 28:11 |
Now hear me and send back the captives from your kinsfolk whom you have taken from your kindred for the fierce wrath of the Lord is upon you |
| 28:12 |
CertainMoreover certain chiefs also of the menEphraimites ofAzariah E′phraim Azari′ah the son of Joha′nanJohanan Berechi′ahBerechiah the son of Meshil′lemothMeshillemoth Jehizki′ahJehizkiah the son of Shallum and Ama′saAmasa the son of Hadlai stood up against those who were coming from the war |
| 28:13 |
and said to them You shall not bring the captives in here for you propose to bring uponon us guilt against the Lord in addition to our present sins and guilt For our guilt is already great and there is fierce wrath against Israel |
| 28:14 |
So the armedwarriors men left the captives and the spoilbooty before the princesofficials and all the assembly |
| 28:15 |
AndThen thethose men who havewere been mentioned by name rosegot up and took the captives and with the spoilbooty they clothed all that were naked among them; they clothed them gave them sandals provided them with food and drink and anointed them; and carrying all the feeble among them on assesdonkeys they brought them to their kinsfolkkindred at Jericho the city of palm trees Then they returned to Samar′iaSamaria |
| 28:17 |
For the E′domitesEdomites had again invaded and defeated Judah and carried away captives |
| 28:18 |
And the Philistines had made raids on the cities in the Shephe′lahShephelah and the Negeb of Judah and had taken Beth she′meshshemesh Ai′jalonAijalon Gede′rothGederoth Soco with its villages Timnah with its villages and Gimzo with its villages; and they settled there |
| 28:19 |
For the Lord brought Judah low because of King Ahaz king of Israel for he had dealtbehaved wantonlywithout restraint in Judah and had been faithless to the Lord |
| 28:20 |
So Til′gathKing pilne′serTilgath kingpilneser of Assyria came against him and afflictedoppressed him instead of strengthening him |
| 28:21 |
For Ahaz tookplundered from the house of the Lord and the househouses of the king and of the princesofficials and gave tribute to the king of Assyria; but it did not help him |
| 28:23 |
For he sacrificed to the gods of Damascus which had defeated him and said Because the gods of the kings of SyriaAram helped them I will sacrifice to them so that they may help me But they were the ruin of him and of all Israel |
| 28:24 |
And Ahaz gathered together the vesselsutensils of the house of God and cut in pieces the vesselsutensils of the house of God andHe he shut up the doors of the house of the Lord; and he made himself altars in every corner of Jerusalem |
| 28:25 |
In every city of Judah he made high places to burnmake incenseofferings to other gods provoking to anger the Lord the God of his fathersancestors |
| 28:26 |
Now the rest of his acts and all his ways from first to last behold they are written in the Book of the Kings of Judah and Israel |
| 28:27 |
And Ahaz slept with his fathersancestors and they buried him in the city in Jerusalem; forbut they did not bring him into the tombs of the kings of Israel AndHis Hezeki′ah his son reignedHezekiah insucceeded his steadhim |
| 29:1 |
Hezeki′ahHezekiah began to reign when he was twenty five years old; and he reigned twenty nine years in Jerusalem His mothers name was Abi′jahAbijah the daughter of Zechari′ahZechariah |
| 29:2 |
AndHe he did what was right in the eyessight of the Lord accordingjust toas allhis thatancestor David his father had done |
| 29:5 |
andHe said to them HearListen to me Levites NowSanctify sanctify yourselves and sanctify the house of the Lord the God of your fathersancestors and carry out the filth from the holy place |
| 29:6 |
For our fathersancestors have been unfaithful and have done what was evil in the sight of the Lord our God; they have forsaken him and have turned away their faces from the habitationdwelling of the Lord and turned their backs |
| 29:7 |
They also shut the doors of the vestibule and put out the lamps and have not burnedoffered incense or offeredmade burnt offerings in the holy place to the God of Israel |
| 29:8 |
Therefore the wrath of the Lord came onupon Judah and Jerusalem and he has made them an object of horror of astonishment and of hissing as you see with your own eyes |
| 29:9 |
ForOur lo our fathers have fallen by the sword and our sons and our daughters and our wives are in captivity for this |
| 29:10 |
Now it is in my heart to make a covenant with the Lord the God of Israel so that his fierce anger may turn away from us |
| 29:11 |
My sons do not now be negligent for the Lord has chosen you to stand in his presence to minister to him and to be his ministers and burnmake incenseofferings to him |
| 29:12 |
Then the Levites arose Mahath the son of Ama′saiAmasai and Jo′elJoel the son of Azari′ahAzariah of the sons of the Ko′hathitesKohathites; and of the sons of Merar′iMerari Kish the son of Abdi and Azari′ahAzariah the son of Jehal′lelelJehallelel; and of the Gershonites Jo′ahJoah the son of Zimmah and Eden the son of Jo′ahJoah; |
| 29:13 |
and of the sons of EliElizaphan za′phan Shimri and Jeu′elJeuel; and of the sons of Asaph Zechari′ahZechariah and Mattani′ahMattaniah; |
| 29:14 |
and of the sons of Heman Jehu′elJehuel and Shim′e iShimei; and of the sons of Jedu′thunJeduthun Shemai′ahShemaiah and Uz′zielUzziel |
| 29:15 |
They gathered their brethrenbrothers and sanctified themselves and went in as the king had commanded by the words of the Lord to cleanse the house of the Lord |
| 29:16 |
The priests went into the inner part of the house of the Lord to cleanse it and they brought out all the uncleannessunclean things that they found in the temple of the Lord into the court of the house of the Lord; and the Levites took itthem and carried itthem out to the brookWadi Kidron |
| 29:18 |
Then they went ininside to Hezeki′ahKing theHezekiah king and said We have cleansed all the house of the Lord the altar of burnt offering and all its utensils and the table for the showbreadrows of bread and all its utensils |
| 29:19 |
All the utensils whichthat King Ahaz discardedrepudiated induring his reign when he was faithless we have made ready and sanctified; andsee behold they are beforein front of the altar of the Lord |
| 29:20 |
Then Hezeki′ahKing theHezekiah king rose early andassembled gathered the officials of the city and went up to the house of the Lord |
| 29:21 |
AndThey they brought seven bulls seven rams seven lambs and seven hemale goats for a sin offering for the kingdom and for the sanctuary and for Judah AndHe he commanded the priests the sonsdescendants of Aaron to offer them on the altar of the Lord |
| 29:22 |
So they killedslaughtered the bulls and the priests received the blood and threwdashed it against the altar; and they killedslaughtered the rams and their blood was throwndashed against the altar; and they killedalso slaughtered the lambs and their blood was throwndashed against the altar |
| 29:23 |
Then the hemale goats for the sin offering were brought to the king and the assembly; and they laid their hands uponon them |
| 29:24 |
and the priests killedslaughtered them and made a sin offering with their blood onat the altar to make atonement for all Israel For the king commanded that the burnt offering and the sin offering should be made for all Israel |
| 29:25 |
AndHe he stationed the Levites in the house of the Lord with cymbals harps and lyres according to the commandment of David and of Gad the kings seer and of Nathan the prophet; Nathan for the commandment was from the Lord through his prophets |
| 29:27 |
Then Hezeki′ahHezekiah commanded that the burnt offering be offered on the altar AndWhen when the burnt offering began the song to the Lord began also and the trumpets accompanied by the instruments of King David king of Israel |
| 29:28 |
The whole assembly worshiped and the singers sang and the trumpeters sounded; all this continued until the burnt offering was finished |
| 29:29 |
When the offering was finished the king and all who were present with him bowed themselvesdown and worshiped |
| 29:30 |
AndKing Hezeki′ahHezekiah the king and the princesofficials commanded the Levites to sing praises to the Lord with the words of David and of Asaph the seer AndAsaph theyThey sang praises with gladness and they bowed down and worshiped |
| 29:31 |
Then Hezeki′ahHezekiah said You have now consecrated yourselves to the Lord; come near bring sacrifices and thank offerings to the house of the Lord AndThe the assembly brought sacrifices and thank offerings; and all who were of a willing heart brought burnt offerings |
| 29:32 |
The number of the burnt offerings whichthat the assembly brought was seventy bulls aone hundred rams and two hundred lambs; all these were for a burnt offering to the Lord |
| 29:33 |
AndThe the consecrated offerings were six hundred bulls and three thousand sheep |
| 29:34 |
But the priests were too few and could not flayskin all the burnt offerings so until other priests had sanctified themselves their brethrenkindred the Levites helped them until the work was finished—for the Levites were more uprightconscientious in heart than the priests in sanctifying themselves |
| 29:35 |
Besides the great number of burnt offerings there was the fat of the peace offerings of well being and there were the libationsdrink offerings for the burnt offerings Thus the service of the house of the Lord was restored |
| 29:36 |
And Hezeki′ahHezekiah and all the people rejoiced because of what God had done for the people; for the thing camehad come about suddenly |
| 30:1 |
Hezeki′ahHezekiah sent word to all Israel and Judah and wrote letters also to E′phraimEphraim and Manas′sehManasseh that they should come to the house of the Lord at Jerusalem to keep the passover to the Lord the God of Israel |
| 30:2 |
For the king and his princesofficials and all the assembly in Jerusalem had taken counsel to keep the passover in the second month— |
| 30:3 |
for they could not keep it inat its proper time because the priests had not sanctified themselves in sufficient number nor had the people assembled in Jerusalem— |
| 30:4 |
andThe the plan seemed right to the king and all the assembly |
| 30:6 |
So couriers went throughout all Israel and Judah with letters from the king and his princesofficials as the king had commanded saying O people of Israel return to the Lord the God of Abraham Isaac and Israel so that he may turn again to the remnant of you who have escaped from the hand of the kings of Assyria |
| 30:7 |
Do not be like your fathersancestors and your brethrenkindred who were faithless to the Lord God of their fathersancestors so that he made them a desolation as you see |
| 30:8 |
Do not now be stiff necked as your fathersancestors were but yield yourselves to the Lord and come to his sanctuary which he has sanctified forforever ever and serve the Lord your God so that his fierce anger may turn away from you |
| 30:9 |
For ifas you return to the Lord your brethrenkindred and your children will find compassion with their captors and return to this land For the Lord your God is gracious and merciful and will not turn away his face from you if you return to him |
| 30:10 |
So the couriers went from city to city through the country of E′phraimEphraim and Manas′sehManasseh and as far as Zeb′ulunZebulun; but they laughed them to scorn and mocked them |
| 30:11 |
Only a few menfrom of Asher ofManasseh Manas′seh and ofZebulun Zeb′ulun humbled themselves and came to Jerusalem |
| 30:12 |
The hand of God was also uponon Judah to give them one heart to do what the king and the princesofficials commanded by the word of the Lord |
| 30:13 |
AndMany many people came together in Jerusalem to keep the feastfestival of unleavened bread in the second month a very greatlarge assembly |
| 30:14 |
They set to work and removed the altars that were in Jerusalem and all the altars for burningoffering incense they took away and threw into the Wadi Kidron valley |
| 30:15 |
AndThey theyslaughtered killed the passover lamb on the fourteenth day of the second month AndThe the priests and the Levites were putashamed toand shame so that they sanctified themselves and brought burnt offerings into the house of the Lord |
| 30:16 |
They took their accustomed posts according to the law of Moses the man of God; the priests sprinkleddashed the blood whichthat they received from the handhands of the Levites |
| 30:17 |
For there were many in the assembly who had not sanctified themselves; therefore the Levites had to killslaughter the passover lamb for everyeveryone one who was not clean to make it holy to the Lord |
| 30:18 |
For a multitude of the people many of them from E′phraimEphraim Manas′sehManasseh Is′sacharIssachar and Zeb′ulunZebulun had not cleansed themselves yet they ate the passover otherwise than as prescribed ForBut Hezeki′ahHezekiah had prayed for them saying The good Lord pardon everyall one |
| 30:19 |
who setsset histheir hearthearts to seek God the Lord the God of histheir fathersancestors even though not accordingin toaccordance with the sanctuarys rules of cleanness |
| 30:20 |
AndThe the Lord heard Hezeki′ahHezekiah and healed the people |
| 30:21 |
AndThe the people of Israel thatwho were present at Jerusalem kept the feastfestival of unleavened bread seven days with great gladness; and the Levites and the priests praised the Lord day by day singingaccompanied withby allloud theirinstruments mightfor to the Lord |
| 30:22 |
AndHezekiah Hezeki′ah spoke encouragingly to all the Levites who showed good skill in the service of the Lord So the people ate the food of the festival for seven days sacrificing peace offerings of well being and giving thanks to the Lord the God of their fathersancestors |
| 30:23 |
Then the whole assembly agreed together to keep the feastfestival for another seven days; so they kept it for another seven days with gladness |
| 30:24 |
For Hezeki′ahKing kingHezekiah of Judah gave the assembly a thousand bulls and seven thousand sheep for offerings and the princesofficials gave the assembly a thousand bulls and ten thousand sheep AndThe the priests sanctified themselves in great numbers |
| 30:25 |
The whole assembly of Judah and the priests and the Levites and the whole assembly that came out of Israel and the sojournersresident aliens who came out of the land of Israel and the sojournersresident aliens who dweltlived in Judah rejoiced |
| 30:26 |
SoThere there was great joy in Jerusalem for since the time of Solomon the son of King David king of Israel there had been nothing like this in Jerusalem |
| 30:27 |
Then the priests and the Levites arosestood up and blessed the people and their voice was heard; and their prayer came to his holy habitationdwelling in heaven |
| 31:1 |
Now when all this was finished all Israel who were present went out to the cities of Judah and broke indown pieces the pillars and hewed down the Ashe′rimsacred poles and brokepulled down the high places and the altars throughout all Judah and Benjamin and in E′phraimEphraim and Manas′sehManasseh until they had destroyed them all Then all the people of Israel returned to their cities everyall man to histheir possessionindividual properties |
| 31:2 |
AndHezekiah Hezeki′ah appointed the divisions of the priests and of the Levites division by division eacheveryone according to his service the priests and the Levites for burnt offerings and peace offerings of well being to minister in the gates of the camp of the Lord and to give thanks and praise |
| 31:3 |
The contribution of the king from his own possessions was for the burnt offerings: the burnt offerings of morning and evening and the burnt offerings for the sabbaths the new moons and the appointed feastsfestivals as it is written in the law of the Lord |
| 31:4 |
AndHe he commanded the people who lived in Jerusalem to give the portion due to the priests and the Levites so that they might givedevote themselves to the law of the Lord |
| 31:5 |
As soon as the commandword was spread abroad the people of Israel gave in abundance the first fruits of grain wine oil honey and of all the produce of the field; and they brought in abundantly the tithe of everything |
| 31:6 |
AndThe the people of Israel and Judah who lived in the cities of Judah also brought in the tithe of cattle and sheep and the tithe of the dedicated things whichthat had been consecrated to the Lord their God and laid them in heaps |
| 31:8 |
When Hezeki′ahHezekiah and the princesofficials came and saw the heaps they blessed the Lord and his people Israel |
| 31:9 |
AndHezekiah Hezeki′ah questioned the priests and the Levites about the heaps |
| 31:10 |
Azari′ahThe the chief priest Azariah who was of the house of Zadok answered him Since they began to bring the contributions into the house of the Lord we have eaten and had enough to eat and have plenty leftto spare; for the Lord has blessed his people so that we have this great storesupply left over |
| 31:11 |
Then Hezeki′ahHezekiah commanded them to prepare store chambers in the house of the Lord; and they prepared them |
| 31:12 |
AndFaithfully they faithfully brought in the contributions the tithes and the dedicated things The chief officer in charge of them was Conani′ahConaniah the Levite with Shim′e i his brother Shimei as second; |
| 31:13 |
while Jehi′elJehiel Azazi′ahAzaziah Nahath As′ahelAsahel Jer′imothJerimoth Jo′zabadJozabad Eli′elEliel Ismachi′ahIsmachiah Mahath and Benai′ahBenaiah were overseers assisting Conani′ahConaniah and Shim′e i his brother Shimei by the appointment of Hezeki′ahKing theHezekiah king and Azari′ahof Azariah the chief officer of the house of God |
| 31:14 |
AndKore Ko′re the son of Imnah the Levite keeper of the east gate was overin charge of the freewill offerings to God to apportion the contribution reserved for the Lord and the most holy offerings |
| 31:15 |
Eden Mini′aminMiniamin Jeshua Shemai′ahShemaiah Amari′ahAmariah and Shecani′ahShecaniah were faithfully assisting him in the cities of the priests to distribute the portions to their brethrenkindred old and young alike by divisions |
| 31:17 |
The enrollment of the priests was according to their fathersancestral houses; that of the Levites from twenty years old and upwards was according to their offices by their divisions |
| 31:19 |
And for the sonsdescendants of Aaron the priests who were in the fields of common land belonging to their citiestowns theretown wereby mentown in the severalpeople cities who were designated by name were to distribute portions to every male among the priests and to everyeveryone one among the Levites who was enrolled |
| 31:20 |
ThusHezekiah Hezeki′ah did this throughout all Judah; and he did what was good and right and faithful before the Lord his God |
| 31:21 |
And every work that he undertook in the service of the house of God and in accordance with the law and the commandments seekingto seek his God he did with all his heart; and he prospered |
| 32:1 |
After these things and these acts of faithfulness Sennach′eribKing kingSennacherib of Assyria came and invaded Judah and encamped against the fortified cities thinking to win them for himself |
| 32:2 |
AndWhen whenHezekiah Hezeki′ah saw that Sennach′eribSennacherib had come and intended to fight against Jerusalem |
| 32:3 |
he planned with his officers and his mightywarriors men to stop the waterflow of the springs that were outside the city; and they helped him |
| 32:4 |
A great many people were gathered and they stopped all the springs and the brookwadi that flowed through the land saying Why should the Assyrian kings of Assyria come and find much water in abundance |
| 32:5 |
HeHezekiah set to work resolutely and built up all the entire wall that was broken down and raised towers uponon it and outside it he built another wall; and he also strengthened the Millo in the city of David Heand also made weapons and shields in abundance |
| 32:6 |
AndHe heappointed set combat commanders over the people and gathered them together to him in the square at the gate of the city and spoke encouragingly to them saying |
| 32:8 |
With him is an arm of flesh; but with us is the Lord our God to help us and to fight our battles AndThe the people tookwere confidenceencouraged fromby the words of Hezeki′ahKing kingHezekiah of Judah |
| 32:9 |
After this Sennach′eribwhile kingKing Sennacherib of Assyria who was besiegingat Lachish with all his forces he sent his servants to Jerusalem to Hezeki′ahKing kingHezekiah of Judah and to all the people of Judah that were in Jerusalem saying |
| 32:10 |
Thus says Sennach′eribKing kingSennacherib of Assyria: On what are you relying that you standundergo the siege inof Jerusalem |
| 32:11 |
Is not Hezeki′ahHezekiah misleading you thathanding he may give you over to die by famine and by thirst when he tells you The Lord our God will deliversave us from the hand of the king of Assyria |
| 32:12 |
HasWas it not this same Hezeki′ahHezekiah takenwho took away his high places and his altars and commanded Judah and Jerusalem saying Before one altar you shall worship and upon it you shall burnmake your sacrificesofferings |
| 32:13 |
Do you not know what I and my fathersancestors have done to all the peoples of other lands Were the gods of the nations of those lands at all able to deliversave their lands out of my hand |
| 32:14 |
Who among all the gods of those nations whichthat my fathersancestors utterly destroyed was able to deliversave his people from my hand that your God should be able to deliversave you from my hand |
| 32:15 |
Now therefore do not let Hezeki′ahHezekiah deceive you or mislead you in this fashion and do not believe him for no god of any nation or kingdom has been able to deliversave his people from my hand or from the hand of my fathersancestors How much less will your God deliversave you out of my hand |
| 32:16 |
AndHis his servants said still more against the Lord God and against his servant Hezeki′ahHezekiah |
| 32:17 |
AndHe healso wrote letters to castthrow contempt on the Lord the God of Israel and to speak against him saying LikeJust as the gods of the nations ofin theother lands whodid have not deliveredrescue their people from my hands so the God of Hezeki′ahHezekiah will not deliverrescue his people from my hand |
| 32:18 |
AndThey they shouted it with a loud voice in the language of Judah to the people of Jerusalem who were uponon the wall to frighten and terrify them in order that they might take the city |
| 32:19 |
AndThey they spoke of the God of Jerusalem as theyif spokehe ofwere like the gods of the peoples of the earth which are the work of menshuman hands |
| 32:20 |
Then Hezeki′ahKing theHezekiah king and Isaiah the prophet theIsaiah son of Amoz prayed because of this and cried to heaven |
| 32:21 |
And the Lord sent an angel who cut off all the mighty warriors and commanders and officers in the camp of the king of Assyria So he returned within shamedisgrace of face to his own land AndWhen when he came into the house of his god some of his own sons struck him down there with the sword |
| 32:22 |
So the Lord saved Hezeki′ahHezekiah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem from the hand of Sennach′eribKing kingSennacherib of Assyria and from the hand of all his enemies; and he gave them rest on every side |
| 32:23 |
AndMany many brought gifts to the Lord toin Jerusalem and precious things to Hezeki′ahKing kingHezekiah of Judah so that he was exalted in the sight of all nations from that time onward |
| 32:24 |
In those days Hezeki′ahHezekiah became sick and was at the point of death andHe he prayed to the Lord; and he answered him and gave him a sign |
| 32:25 |
But Hezeki′ahHezekiah did not makerespond return according to the benefit done to him for his heart was proud Therefore wrath came upon him and upon Judah and Jerusalem |
| 32:26 |
ButThen Hezeki′ahHezekiah humbled himself for the pride of his heart both he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem so that the wrath of the Lord did not come upon them in the days of Hezeki′ahHezekiah |
| 32:27 |
AndHezekiah Hezeki′ah had very great riches and honor; and he made for himself treasuries for silver for gold for precious stones for spices for shields and for all kinds of costly vesselsobjects; |
| 32:30 |
This same Hezeki′ahHezekiah closed the upper outlet of the waters of Gihon and directed them down to the west side of the city of David AndHezekiah Hezeki′ah prospered in all his works |
| 32:31 |
AndSo soalso in the matter of the envoys of the princesofficials of Babylon who had been sent to him to inquire about the sign that had been done in the land God left him to himself in order to trytest him and to know all that was in his heart |
| 32:32 |
Now the rest of the acts of Hezeki′ahHezekiah and his good deeds behold they are written in the vision of Isaiah the prophet theIsaiah son of Amoz in the Book of the Kings of Judah and Israel |
| 32:33 |
AndHezekiah Hezeki′ah slept with his fathersancestors and they buried him inon the ascent ofto the tombs of the sonsdescendants of David; and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem did him honor at his death AndHis Manas′seh his son reignedManasseh insucceeded his steadhim |
| 33:1 |
Manas′sehManasseh was twelve years old when he began to reign; and he reigned fifty five years in Jerusalem |
| 33:3 |
For he rebuilt the high places whichthat his father Hezeki′ahHezekiah had brokenpulled down and erected altars to the Ba′alsBaals and made Ashe′rahssacred andpoles worshiped all the host of heaven and served them |
| 33:4 |
AndHe he built altars in the house of the Lord of which the Lord had said In Jerusalem shall my name be forforever ever |
| 33:5 |
AndHe he built altars for all the host of heaven in the two courts of the house of the Lord |
| 33:6 |
AndHe hemade burned his sonsson aspass anthrough offeringfire in the valley of the son of Hinnom and practiced soothsaying and augury and sorcery and dealt with mediums and with wizards He did much evil in the sight of the Lord provoking him to anger |
| 33:7 |
AndThe thecarved image of the idol whichthat he had made he set in the house of God of which God said to David and to Solomon his son Solomon In this house and in Jerusalem which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel I will put my name for everforever; |
| 33:8 |
and I will nonever moreagain remove the footfeet of Israel from the land whichthat I appointed for your fathersancestors if only they will be careful to do all that I have commanded them all the law the statutes and the ordinances given through Moses |
| 33:9 |
Manas′sehManasseh seducedmisled Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem so that they did more evil than the nations whom the Lord had destroyed before the people of Israel |
| 33:10 |
The Lord spoke to Manas′sehManasseh and to his people but they gave no heed |
| 33:11 |
Therefore the Lord brought uponagainst them the commanders of the army of the king of Assyria who took Manas′sehManasseh withcaptive hooksin andmanacles bound him with fetters of bronze and brought him to Babylon |
| 33:12 |
AndWhile when he was in distress he entreated the favor of the Lord his God and humbled himself greatly before the God of his fathersancestors |
| 33:13 |
He prayed to him and God received his entreaty and heard his supplicationplea and broughtrestored him again to Jerusalem intoand to his kingdom Then Manas′sehManasseh knew that the Lord indeed was God |
| 33:14 |
AfterwardsAfterward he built an outer wall for the city of David west of Gihon in the valley andreaching for the entrance intoat the Fish Gate; andhe carried it roundaround Ophel and raised it to a very great height; heHe also put commanders of the army in all the fortified cities in Judah |
| 33:15 |
AndHe he took away the foreign gods and the idol from the house of the Lord and all the altars that he had built on the mountain of the house of the Lord and in Jerusalem and he threw them outsideout of the city |
| 33:16 |
He also restored the altar of the Lord and offered uponon it sacrifices of peacewell offeringsbeing and of thanksgiving; and he commanded Judah to serve the Lord the God of Israel |
| 33:17 |
NeverthelessThe the people however still sacrificed at the high places but only to the Lord their God |
| 33:18 |
Now the rest of the acts of Manas′sehManasseh and his prayer to his God and the words of the seers who spoke to him in the name of the Lord the God of Israel beholdthese they are in the ChroniclesAnnals of the Kings of Israel |
| 33:19 |
AndHis his prayer and how God received his entreaty and all his sin and his faithlessness and the sites on which he built high places and set up the Ashe′rimsacred poles and the images before he humbled himself beholdthese they are written in the Chroniclesrecords of the Seersseers |
| 33:20 |
So Manas′sehManasseh slept with his fathersancestors and they buried him in his house; andHis Amon his son reignedAmon insucceeded his steadhim |
| 33:21 |
Amon was twenty two years old when he began to reign; and he reigned two years in Jerusalem |
| 33:22 |
He did what was evil in the sight of the Lord as Manas′seh his father Manasseh had done Amon sacrificed to all the images that Manas′seh his father Manasseh had made and served them |
| 33:23 |
AndHe he did not humble himself before the Lord as Manas′seh his father Manasseh had humbled himself but this Amon incurred guilt more and more guilt |
| 33:24 |
AndHis his servants conspired against him and killed him in his house |
| 33:25 |
But the people of the land slewkilled all those who had conspired against King Amon; and the people of the land made Josi′ah his son Josiah king into hissucceed steadhim |
| 34:1 |
Josi′ahJosiah was eight years old when he began to reign; and he reigned thirty one years in Jerusalem |
| 34:2 |
He did what was right in the eyessight of the Lord and walked in the ways of David his fatherancestor David; and he did not turn aside to the right or to the left |
| 34:3 |
For in the eighth year of his reign while he was yetstill a boy he began to seek the God of David his father;ancestor David and in the twelfth year he began to purge Judah and Jerusalem of the high places the Ashe′rimsacred poles and the gravencarved and the moltencast images |
| 34:4 |
AndIn his presence they brokepulled down the altars of the Ba′als in his presenceBaals; and he heweddemolished down the incense altars whichthat stood above them; andHe he broke indown pieces the Ashe′rimsacred poles and the gravencarved and the moltencast images; and he made dust of them and strewedscattered it over the graves of those who had sacrificed to them |
| 34:6 |
AndIn in the citiestowns of Manas′sehManasseh E′phraimEphraim and Simeon and as far as Naph′taliNaphtali in their ruins roundall aboutaround |
| 34:7 |
he broke down the altars and beat the Ashe′rimsacred poles and the images into powder and heweddemolished down all the incense altars throughout all the land of Israel Then he returned to Jerusalem |
| 34:8 |
NowIn in the eighteenth year of his reign when he had purged the land and the house he sent Shaphan the son of Azali′ahAzaliah andMaaseiah Ma asei′ah the governor of the city and Jo′ahJoah the son of Jo′ahazJoahaz the recorder to repair the house of the Lord his God |
| 34:9 |
They came to Hilki′ah the high priest Hilkiah and delivered the money that had been brought into the house of God which the Levites the keepers of the threshold had collected from Manas′sehManasseh and E′phraimEphraim and from all the remnant of Israel and from all Judah and Benjamin and from the inhabitants of Jerusalem |
| 34:10 |
They delivered it to the workmenworkers who had the oversight of the house of the Lord; and the workmenworkers who were working in the house of the Lord gave it for repairing and restoring the house |
| 34:11 |
They gave it to the carpenters and the builders to buy quarried stone and timber for binders and beams for the buildings whichthat the kings of Judah had let go to ruin |
| 34:12 |
AndThe thepeople men did the work faithfully Over them were setappointed the Levites Jahath and Obadi′ahObadiah the Levites of the sons of Merar′iMerari andalong Zechari′ahwith Zechariah and Meshul′lamMeshullam of the sons of the Ko′hathitesKohathites to have oversight TheOther Levites all whoskillful were skilful with instruments of music |
| 34:14 |
While they were bringing out the money that had been brought into the house of the Lord Hilki′ah the priest Hilkiah found the book of the law of the Lord given through Moses |
| 34:15 |
ThenHilkiah Hilki′ah said to Shaphan the secretary Shaphan I have found the book of the law in the house of the Lord; and Hilki′ahHilkiah gave the book to Shaphan |
| 34:17 |
They have emptied out the money that was found in the house of the Lord and have delivered it into the hand of the overseers and the workmenworkers |
| 34:18 |
ThenThe secretary Shaphan theinformed secretary told the king Hilki′ahThe the priest Hilkiah has given me a book And Shaphan then read it beforealoud to the king |
| 34:19 |
When the king heard the words of the law he renttore his clothes |
| 34:20 |
AndThen the king commanded Hilki′ahHilkiah Ahi′kamAhikam the son of Shaphan Abdon the son of Micah Shaphan the secretary Shaphan and Asai′ah the kings servant sayingAsaiah: |
| 34:21 |
Go inquire of the Lord for me and for those who are left in Israel and in Judah concerning the words of the book that has been found; for great is the wrath of the Lord that is poured out on us is great because our fathersancestors havedid not keptkeep the word of the Lord to doact accordingin toaccordance with all that is written in this book |
| 34:22 |
So Hilki′ahHilkiah and those whom the king had sent went to Huldah the prophetessprophet Huldah the wife of Shallum the son of Tokhath son of Hasrah keeper of the wardrobe nowwho shelived dwelt in Jerusalem in the Second Quarter and spoke to her to that effect |
| 34:23 |
AndShe shedeclared said to them Thus says the Lord the God of Israel: Tell the man who sent you to me |
| 34:24 |
Thus says the Lord: Behold I will indeed bring evildisaster upon this place and upon its inhabitants all the curses that are written in the book whichthat was read before the king of Judah |
| 34:25 |
Because they have forsaken me and have burnedmade incenseofferings to other gods so that they mighthave provokeprovoked me to anger with all the works of their hands therefore my wrath will be poured out uponon this place and will not be quenched |
| 34:26 |
But as to the king of Judah who sent you to inquire of the Lord thus shall you say to him: Thus says the Lord the God of Israel: Regarding the words whichthat you have heard |
| 34:27 |
because your heart was penitent and you humbled yourself before God when you heard his words against this place and its inhabitants and you have humbled yourself before me and have renttorn your clothes and wept before me I also have heard you says the Lord |
| 34:28 |
Behold I will gather you to your fathersancestors and you shall be gathered to your grave in peace; and your eyes shall not see all the evildisaster whichthat I will bring uponon this place and its inhabitants AndThey theytook broughtthe message back word to the king |
| 34:29 |
Then the king sent word and gathered together all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem |
| 34:30 |
AndThe the king went up to the house of the Lord with all the menpeople of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem and the priests and the Levites all the people both great and small; and he read in their hearing all the words of the book of the covenant whichthat had been found in the house of the Lord |
| 34:31 |
AndThe the king stood in his place and made a covenant before the Lord to walkfollow after the Lord andkeeping to keep his commandments and his testimoniesdecrees and his statutes with all his heart and all his soul to perform the words of the covenant that were written in this book |
| 34:32 |
Then he made all who were present in Jerusalem and in Benjamin standpledge themselves to it And the inhabitants of Jerusalem didacted according to the covenant of God the God of their fathersancestors |
| 34:33 |
AndJosiah Josi′ah took away all the abominations from all the territory that belonged to the people of Israel and made all who were in Israel serveworship the Lord their God All his days they did not turn away from following the Lord the God of their fathersancestors |
| 35:1 |
Josi′ahJosiah kept a passover to the Lord in Jerusalem; and they killedslaughtered the passover lamb on the fourteenth day of the first month |
| 35:3 |
AndHe he said to the Levites who taught all Israel and who were holy to the Lord Put the holy ark in the house whichthat Solomon the son of David king of Israel built; you need no longer carry it uponon your shoulders Now serve the Lord your God and his people Israel |
| 35:4 |
PrepareMake yourselvespreparations accordingby to your fathersancestral houses by your divisions following the written directions of King David king of Israel and the written directions of Solomon his son Solomon |
| 35:5 |
AndTake standposition in the holy place according to the groupings of the fathersancestral houses of your brethrenkindred the lay people and let there be Levites for each adivision part of aan fathersancestral house of the Levites |
| 35:6 |
AndSlaughter kill the passover lamb and sanctify yourselves and prepareon forbehalf of your brethrenkindred tomake dopreparations acting according to the word of the Lord by Moses |
| 35:7 |
Then Josi′ahJosiah contributed to the lay people as passover offerings for all that were present lambs and kids from the flock to the number of thirty thousand and three thousand bulls; these were from the kings possessions |
| 35:8 |
AndHis hisofficials princes contributed willingly to the people to the priests and to the Levites Hilki′ahHilkiah Zechari′ahZechariah and Jehi′elJehiel the chief officers of the house of God gave to the priests for the passover offerings two thousand six hundred lambs and kids and three hundred bulls |
| 35:9 |
Conani′ahConaniah also and Shemai′ahhis andbrothers Nethan′elShemaiah hisand brothersNethanel and Hashabi′ahHashabiah and JeJeiel i′el and Jo′zabadJozabad the chiefs of the Levites gave to the Levites for the passover offerings five thousand lambs and kids and five hundred bulls |
| 35:11 |
AndThey theyslaughtered killed the passover lamb and the priests sprinkleddashed the blood whichthat they received from them while the Levites flayeddid the victimsskinning |
| 35:12 |
AndThey they set aside the burnt offerings so that they might distribute them according to the groupings of the fathersancestral houses of the lay people to offer to the Lord as it is written in the book of Moses And so they did the same with the bulls |
| 35:13 |
AndThey they roasted the passover lamb with fire according to the ordinance; and they boiled the holy offerings in pots in caldrons and in pans and carried them quickly to all the lay people |
| 35:14 |
AndAfterward afterward they preparedmade preparations for themselves and for the priests because the priests the sonsdescendants of Aaron were busiedoccupied in offering the burnt offerings and the fat parts until night; so the Levites preparedmade preparations for themselves and for the priests the sonsdescendants of Aaron |
| 35:15 |
The singers the sonsdescendants of Asaph were in their place according to the command of David and Asaph and Heman and Jedu′thun the kings seer; andJeduthun theThe gatekeepers were at each gate; they did not need to departinterrupt from their service for their brethrenkindred the Levites preparedmade preparations for them |
| 35:16 |
So all the service of the Lord was prepared that day to keep the passover and to offer burnt offerings on the altar of the Lord according to the command of King Josi′ahJosiah |
| 35:17 |
AndThe the people of Israel who were present kept the passover at that time and the feastfestival of unleavened bread seven days |
| 35:18 |
No passover like it had been kept in Israel since the days of Samuel the prophet Samuel; none of the kings of Israel had kept such a passover as was kept by Josi′ahJosiah andby the priests and the Levites andby all Judah and Israel who were present and by the inhabitants of Jerusalem |
| 35:19 |
In the eighteenth year of the reign of Josi′ahJosiah this passover was kept |
| 35:20 |
After all this when Josi′ahJosiah had preparedset the temple in order King Neco king of Egypt went up to fight at Car′chemishCarchemish on the Euphra′tesEuphrates and Josi′ahJosiah went out against him |
| 35:21 |
But heNeco sent envoys to him saying What have weI to do with eachyou other king of Judah I am not coming against you thistoday day but against the house with which I am at war; and God has commanded me to makehurry haste Cease opposing God who is with me lestso that he will not destroy you |
| 35:22 |
NeverthelessBut Josi′ahJosiah would not turn away from him but disguised himself in order to fight with him He did not listen to the words of Neco from the mouth of God but joined battle in the plain of Megid′doMegiddo |
| 35:23 |
AndThe the archers shot King Josi′ahJosiah; and the king said to his servants Take me away for I am badly wounded |
| 35:24 |
So his servants took him out of the chariot and carried him in his second chariot and brought him to Jerusalem AndThere he died and was buried in the tombs of his fathersancestors All Judah and Jerusalem mourned for Josi′ahJosiah |
| 35:25 |
Jeremiah also uttered a lament for Josi′ah;Josiah and all the singing men and singing women have spoken of Josi′ahJosiah in their laments to this day They made these ana ordinancecustom in Israel; behold they are writtenrecorded in the Laments |
| 35:26 |
Now the rest of the acts of Josi′ahJosiah and his goodfaithful deeds accordingin toaccordance with what is written in the law of the Lord |
| 35:27 |
and his acts first and last behold they are written in the Book of the Kings of Israel and Judah |
| 36:1 |
The people of the land took Jeho′ahazJehoahaz the son of Josi′ahJosiah and made him king into succeed his fathersfather stead in Jerusalem |
| 36:2 |
Jeho′ahazJehoahaz was twenty three years old when he began to reign; and he reigned three months in Jerusalem |
| 36:3 |
Then the king of Egypt deposed him in Jerusalem and laid uponon the land a tribute of aone hundred talents of silver and aone talent of gold |
| 36:4 |
AndThe the king of Egypt made Eli′akim his brother Eliakim king over Judah and Jerusalem and changed his name to Jehoi′akimJehoiakim; but Neco took Jeho′ahaz his brother Jehoahaz and carried him to Egypt |
| 36:5 |
Jehoi′akimJehoiakim was twenty five years old when he began to reign; and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem He did what was evil in the sight of the Lord his God |
| 36:6 |
Against him cameKing upNebuchadnezzar Nebuchadnez′zar king of Babylon came up and bound him inwith fetters to take him to Babylon |
| 36:7 |
Nebuchadnez′zarNebuchadnezzar also carried partsome of the vessels of the house of the Lord to Babylon and put them in his palace in Babylon |
| 36:8 |
Now the rest of the acts of Jehoi′akimJehoiakim and the abominations whichthat he did and what was found against him behold they are written in the Book of the Kings of Israel and Judah; and Jehoi′achin his son reignedJehoiachin insucceeded his steadhim |
| 36:9 |
Jehoi′achinJehoiachin was eight years old when he began to reign; and he reigned three months and ten days in Jerusalem He did what was evil in the sight of the Lord |
| 36:10 |
In the spring of the year King Nebuchadnez′zarNebuchadnezzar sent and brought him to Babylon along with the precious vessels of the house of the Lord and made his brother Zedeki′ahZedekiah king over Judah and Jerusalem |
| 36:11 |
Zedeki′ahZedekiah was twenty one years old when he began to reign; and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem |
| 36:12 |
He did what was evil in the sight of the Lord his God He did not humble himself before Jeremiah the prophet Jeremiah who spoke from the mouth of the Lord |
| 36:13 |
He also rebelled against King Nebuchadnez′zarNebuchadnezzar who had made him swear by God; he stiffened his neck and hardened his heart against turning to the Lord the God of Israel |
| 36:14 |
All the leading priests and the people likewisealso were exceedingly unfaithful following all the abominations of the nations; and they polluted the house of the Lord whichthat he had hallowedconsecrated in Jerusalem |
| 36:15 |
The Lord the God of their fathersancestors sent persistently to them by his messengers because he had compassion on his people and on his dwelling place; |
| 36:16 |
but they kept mocking the messengers of God despising his words and scoffing at his prophets tilluntil the wrath of the Lord rose against his people tillbecame so great that there was no remedy |
| 36:17 |
Therefore he brought up against them the king of the Chalde′ansChaldeans who slewkilled their youngyouths men with the sword in the house of their sanctuary and had no compassion on young man or virginyoung oldwoman manthe aged or agedthe feeble; he gave them all into his hand |
| 36:18 |
AndAll all the vessels of the house of God greatlarge and small and the treasures of the house of the Lord and the treasures of the king and of his princesofficials all these he brought to Babylon |
| 36:19 |
AndThey they burned the house of God and broke down the wall of Jerusalem and burned all its palaces with fire and destroyed all its precious vessels |
| 36:21 |
to fulfilfulfill the word of the Lord by the mouth of Jeremiah until the land had enjoyedmade up for its sabbaths All the days that it lay desolate it kept sabbath to fulfilfulfill seventy years |
| 36:22 |
NowIn in the first year of King Cyrus king of Persia thatin fulfillment of the word of the Lord spoken by the mouth of Jeremiah might be accomplished the Lord stirred up the spirit of King Cyrus king of Persia so that he madesent a proclamationherald throughout all his kingdom and also putdeclared it in writinga written edict: |
| 36:23 |
Thus says King Cyrus king of Persia: The Lord the God of heaven has given me all the kingdoms of the earth and he has charged me to build him a house at Jerusalem which is in Judah Whoever is among you of all his people may the Lord his God be with him Let him go up |
