| 1:1 |
Paul called by the will of God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God and our brother Sos′thenesSosthenes |
| 1:2 |
To the church of God whichthat is atin Corinth to those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus called to be saints together with all those who in every place call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ both their Lord and ours: |
| 1:4 |
I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God whichthat washas been given you in Christ Jesus |
| 1:5 |
thatfor in every way you werehave been enriched in him within all speech and allknowledge knowledgeof every kind— |
| 1:6 |
evenjust as the testimony toof Christ washas confirmedbeen strengthened among you— |
| 1:7 |
so that you are not lacking in any spiritual gift as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ; |
| 1:8 |
whoHe will sustainalso strengthen you to the end guiltlessso inthat you may be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ |
| 1:9 |
God is faithful; by whomhim you were called into the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord |
| 1:10 |
Now I appeal to you brethrenbrothers and sisters by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ that all of you agreebe in agreement and that there be no dissensionsdivisions among you but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgmentpurpose |
| 1:11 |
For it has been reported to me by Chlo′esChloes people that there isare quarrelingquarrels among you my brethrenbrothers and sisters |
| 1:12 |
What I mean is that each one of you says I belong to Paul or I belong to Apol′losApollos or I belong to Cephas or I belong to Christ |
| 1:13 |
IsHas Christ been divided Was Paul crucified for you Or were you baptized in the name of Paul |
| 1:14 |
I amthank thankfulGod that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Ga′ius;Gaius |
| 1:15 |
lestso anythat no one shouldcan say that you were baptized in my name |
| 1:16 |
I did baptize also the household of Steph′anasStephanas; Beyondbeyond that I do not know whether I baptized anyanyone one else |
| 1:17 |
For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preachproclaim the gospel and not with eloquent wisdom lestso that the cross of Christ might not be emptied of its power |
| 1:18 |
For the wordmessage ofabout the cross is follyfoolishness to those who are perishing but to us who are being saved it is the power of God |
| 1:19 |
For it is written I will destroy the wisdom of the wise and the clevernessdiscernment of the cleverdiscerning I will thwart |
| 1:20 |
Where is the one who is wise man Where is the scribe Where is the debater of this age Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world |
| 1:21 |
For since in the wisdom of God the world did not know God through wisdom itGod pleaseddecided God through the follyfoolishness of whatour weproclamation preach to save those who believe |
| 1:22 |
For Jews demand signs and Greeks seekdesire wisdom |
| 1:23 |
but we preachproclaim Christ crucified a stumbling block to Jews and follyfoolishness to Gentiles |
| 1:24 |
but to those who are the called both Jews and Greeks Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God |
| 1:25 |
For theGods foolishness of God is wiser than menhuman wisdom and theGods weakness of God is stronger than menhuman strength |
| 1:26 |
ForConsider consider your own call brethren;brothers and sisters: not many of you were wise accordingby tohuman worldly standards not many were powerful not many were of noble birth; |
| 1:27 |
butBut God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; |
| 1:28 |
God chose what is low and despised in the world even things that are not to bringreduce to nothing things that are |
| 1:29 |
so that no humanone being might boast in the presence of God |
| 1:30 |
He is the source of your life in Christ Jesus whomwho Godbecame madefor ourus wisdom ourfrom God and righteousness and sanctification and redemption; |
| 1:31 |
thereforein order that as it is written Let himthe one who boasts boast ofin the Lord |
| 2:1 |
When I came to you brethrenbrothers and sisters I did not come proclaiming to you the testimonymystery of God to you in lofty words or wisdom |
| 2:3 |
And I wascame withto you in weakness and in much fear and in much trembling; |
| 2:4 |
andMy my speech and my messageproclamation were not inwith plausible words of wisdom but inwith a demonstration of the Spirit and of power |
| 2:5 |
so that your faith might rest not reston inhuman the wisdom of men but inon the power of God |
| 2:6 |
Yet among the mature we do impartspeak wisdom althoughthough it is not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age who are doomed to passperish away |
| 2:7 |
But we impartspeak aGods wisdom secret and hidden wisdom of God which God decreed before the ages for our glorificationglory |
| 2:9 |
But as it is written What no eye has seen nor ear heard nor the human heart of man conceived what God has prepared for those who love him— |
| 2:10 |
these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit; Forfor the Spirit searches everything even the depths of God |
| 2:11 |
For what personhuman being knows awhat mansis thoughtstruly human except the human spirit ofthat the man which is inwithin him So also no one comprehends thewhat thoughtsis oftruly GodGods except the Spirit of God |
| 2:12 |
Now we have received not the spirit of the world but the Spirit whichthat is from God so that we mightmay understand the gifts bestowed on us by God |
| 2:13 |
And we impartspeak thisof these things in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit interpreting spiritual truthsthings to those who possessare the Spiritspiritual |
| 2:14 |
TheThose who are unspiritual mando does not receive the gifts of theGods Spirit of God for they are follyfoolishness to himthem and hethey isare notunable able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned |
| 2:15 |
TheThose who are spiritual mandiscern judges all things butand isthey himselfare tothemselves besubject judgedto by no one elses scrutiny |
| 3:1 |
ButAnd so brothers and sisters I brethren could not addressspeak to you as spiritual menpeople but rather as menpeople of the flesh as babesinfants in Christ |
| 3:2 |
I fed you with milk not solid food; for you were not ready for it;solid andfood evenEven yetnow you are still not ready |
| 3:3 |
for you are still of the flesh For whileas long as there is jealousy and strifequarreling among you are you not of the flesh and behaving likeaccording ordinaryto menhuman inclinations |
| 3:4 |
For when one says I belong to Paul and another I belong to Apol′losApollos are you not merely menhuman |
| 3:5 |
What then is Apol′losApollos What is Paul Servants through whom you believedcame to believe as the Lord assigned to each |
| 3:6 |
I planted Apol′losApollos watered but God gave the growth |
| 3:7 |
So neither hethe one who plants nor hethe one who waters is anything but only God who gives the growth |
| 3:8 |
HeThe one who plants and hethe one who waters arehave equala common purpose and each shallwill receive his wages according to histhe labor of each |
| 3:9 |
For we are Gods fellowservants workersworking together; you are Gods field Gods building |
| 3:10 |
According to the grace of God given to me like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation and anothersomeone manelse is building uponon it LetEach eachbuilder manmust takechoose with care how heto buildsbuild uponon it |
| 3:11 |
For no otherone foundation can lay any onefoundation layother than the one that whichhas isbeen laid; whichthat foundation is Jesus Christ |
| 3:12 |
Now if anyanyone one builds on the foundation with gold silver precious stones wood hay straw— |
| 3:13 |
the work of each mansbuilder work will become manifest;visible for the Day will disclose it because it will be revealed with fire and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done |
| 3:14 |
If thewhat workhas whichbeen any man has built on the foundation survives hethe builder will receive a reward |
| 3:15 |
If anythe mans work is burned up hethe builder will suffer loss; thoughthe hebuilder himself will be saved but only as through fire |
| 3:17 |
If anyanyone one destroys Gods temple God will destroy himthat person For Gods temple is holy and you are that temple you are |
| 3:18 |
LetDo nonot one deceive himselfyourselves If any one among you thinksthink that heyou isare wise in this age letyou himshould become afools foolso that heyou may become wise |
| 3:19 |
For the wisdom of this world is follyfoolishness with God For it is written He catches the wise in their craftiness |
| 3:20 |
and again The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise that they are futile |
| 3:21 |
So let no one boast ofabout menhuman leaders For all things are yours |
| 3:22 |
whether Paul or Apol′losApollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or the present or the future —all arebelong yours;to you |
| 3:23 |
and you arebelong Christs;to Christ and Christ isbelongs Godsto God |
| 4:1 |
ThisThink isof howus onein shouldthis regardway us as servants of Christ and stewards of theGods mysteries of God |
| 4:5 |
Therefore do not pronounce judgment before the time before the Lord comes who will bring to light the things now hidden in darkness and will disclose the purposes of the heart Then everyeach manone will receive his commendation from God |
| 4:6 |
I have applied all this to myselfApollos and Apol′losmyself for your benefit brethrenbrothers and sisters so that you may learn bythrough us notthe tomeaning goof the saying Nothing beyond what is written so that none of you maywill be puffed up in favor of one against another |
| 4:7 |
For who sees anything different in you What havedo you have that you did not receive IfAnd thenif you received it why do you boast as if it were not a gift |
| 4:8 |
Already you arehave filledall you want Already you have become rich WithoutQuite apart from us you have become kings AndIndeed wouldI wish that you didhad reignbecome kings so that we might sharebe thekings rule with you |
| 4:9 |
For I think that God has exhibited us apostles as last of all likeas menthough sentenced to death; because we have become a spectacle to the world to angels and to menmortals |
| 4:10 |
We are fools for Christsthe sake of Christ but you are wise in Christ We are weak but you are strong You are held in honor but we in disrepute |
| 4:11 |
To the present hour we hungerare hungry and thirstthirsty we are illpoorly cladclothed and buffetedbeaten and homeless |
| 4:12 |
and we laborgrow workingweary withfrom the work of our own hands When reviled we bless; when persecuted we endure; |
| 4:13 |
when slandered we tryspeak tokindly conciliate; We we have become andlike are now as the refuserubbish of the world the offscouringdregs of all things to this very day |
| 4:14 |
I doam not writewriting this to make you ashamed but to admonish you as my beloved children |
| 4:15 |
For though you might have countlessten guidesthousand guardians in Christ you do not have many fathers ForIndeed in Christ Jesus I became your father in Christ Jesus through the gospel |
| 4:16 |
I urgeappeal to you then be imitators of me |
| 4:17 |
ThereforeFor this reason I sent to you Timothy who is my beloved and faithful child in the Lord to remind you of my ways in Christ Jesus as I teach them everywhere in every church |
| 4:18 |
SomeBut aresome arrogantof asyou thoughthinking that I weream not coming to you have become arrogant |
| 4:20 |
For the kingdom of God doesdepends not consiston in talk but inon power |
| 4:21 |
What dowould you wishprefer ShallAm I to come to you with a rodstick or with love in a spirit of gentleness |
| 5:1 |
It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you and of a kind that is not found even among pagans; for a man is living with his fathers wife |
| 5:2 |
And you are arrogant OughtShould you not rather tohave mournmourned Letso himthat he who has done this bewould have been removed from among you |
| 5:3 |
For though absent in body I am present in spirit; and as if present I have already pronounced judgment |
| 5:5 |
you are to deliverhand this man over to Satan for the destruction of the flesh so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus |
| 5:6 |
Your boasting is not a good thing Do you not know that a little leavenyeast leavens the whole lumpbatch of dough |
| 5:7 |
CleanseClean out the old leavenyeast so that you may be a new lumpbatch as you really are unleavened For Christ our paschal lamb Christ has been sacrificed |
| 5:8 |
LetTherefore let us therefore celebrate the festival not with the old leavenyeast the leavenyeast of malice and evil but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth |
| 5:9 |
I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral men;persons— |
| 5:10 |
not at all meaning the immoral of this world or the greedy and robbers or idolaters since then you would then need to go out of the world |
| 5:11 |
But rathernow I wroteam writing to you not to associate with anyanyone one who bears the name of brother ifor hesister who is guiltysexually ofimmoral immorality or greedgreedy or is an idolater reviler drunkard or robber— Do not even to eat with such a one |
| 5:12 |
For what have I to do with judging outsidersthose outside Is it not those insidewho theare churchinside whomthat you are to judge |
| 5:13 |
God judgeswill judge those outside Drive out the wicked person from among you |
| 6:1 |
When oneany of you has a grievance against aanother brotherdo doesyou he dare goto take it to lawcourt before the unrighteous instead of taking it before the saints |
| 6:3 |
Do you not know that we are to judge angels—to Howsay muchnothing moreof ordinary matters pertaining to this life |
| 6:4 |
If then you have suchordinary cases whythen do you layappoint themas beforejudges those who arehave leastno esteemedstanding byin the church |
| 6:5 |
I say this to your shame Can it be that there is no manone among you wise enough to decide between membersone ofbeliever theand brotherhoodanother |
| 6:6 |
but brothera believer goes to lawcourt against brothera believer —and that before unbelievers at that |
| 6:7 |
ToIn fact to have lawsuits at all with one another is already a defeat for you Why not rather sufferbe wrongwronged Why not rather be defrauded |
| 6:8 |
But you yourselves wrong and defraud —and thatbelievers evenat your own brethrenthat |
| 6:9 |
Do you not know that thewrongdoers unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God Do not be deceived; neitherFornicators the immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers normale sexualprostitutes pervertssodomites |
| 6:10 |
nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor revilers nor robbers—none of these will inherit the kingdom of God |
| 6:11 |
And suchthis wereis what some of you used to be But you were washed you were sanctified you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God |
| 6:12 |
All things are lawful for me but not all things are helpfulbeneficial All things are lawful for me but I will not be enslaveddominated by anything |
| 6:13 |
Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food— and God will destroy both one and the other The body is meant not meant for immoralityfornication but for the Lord and the Lord for the body |
| 6:14 |
And God raised the Lord and will also raise us up by his power |
| 6:15 |
Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ ShallShould I therefore take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute Never |
| 6:16 |
Do you not know that hewhoever whois joinsunited himself to a prostitute becomes one body with her For as it is writtensaid The two shall becomebe one flesh |
| 6:17 |
But heanyone who is united to the Lord becomes one spirit with him |
| 6:18 |
Shun immoralityfornication Every other sin whichthat a manperson commits is outside the body; but the immoralfornicator man sins against histhe own body itself |
| 6:19 |
DoOr do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you which you have from God Youand that you are not your own; |
| 6:20 |
For you were bought with a price; Sotherefore glorify God in your body |
| 7:1 |
Now concerning the matters about which you wrote: It is well for a man not to touch a woman |
| 7:2 |
But because of thecases temptationof tosexual immorality each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband |
| 7:4 |
For the wife does not rulehave authority over her own body but the husband does; likewise the husband does not rulehave authority over his own body but the wife does |
| 7:5 |
Do not refusedeprive one another except perhaps by agreement for a seasonset thattime youto may devote yourselves to prayer; butand then come together again lestso that Satan may not tempt you throughbecause of your lack of self control |
| 7:6 |
This I say this by way of concession not of command |
| 7:7 |
I wish that all were as I myself am But each has hisa ownparticular special gift from God one ofhaving one kind and oneanother ofa anotherdifferent kind |
| 7:8 |
To the unmarried and the widows I say that it is well for them to remain singleunmarried as I doam |
| 7:9 |
But if they cannotare exercisenot practicing self control they should marry For it is better to marry than to be aflame with passion |
| 7:10 |
To the married I give chargethis command—not I but the Lord —that the wife should not separate from her husband |
| 7:11 |
but if she does separate let her remain singleunmarried or else be reconciled to her husband— and that the husband should not divorce his wife |
| 7:12 |
To the rest I say—I and not the Lord —that if any brotherbeliever has a wife who is an unbeliever and she consents to live with him he should not divorce her |
| 7:13 |
IfAnd if any woman has a husband who is an unbeliever and he consents to live with her she should not divorce him |
| 7:14 |
For the unbelieving husband is consecratedmade holy through his wife and the unbelieving wife is consecratedmade holy through her husband Otherwise your children would be unclean but as it is they are holy |
| 7:15 |
But if the unbelieving partner desiresseparates to separate let it be so; in such a case the brother or sister is not bound ForIt is to peace that God has called usyou to peace |
| 7:16 |
Wife howfor doall you know whether you willmight save your husband Husband howfor doall you know whether you willmight save your wife |
| 7:17 |
OnlyHowever that may be let everyeach oneof you lead the life whichthat the Lord has assigned to him and in which God has called himyou This is my rule in all the churches |
| 7:18 |
Was anyanyone one at the time of his call already circumcised Let him not seek to remove the marks of circumcision Was anyanyone one at the time of his call uncircumcised Let him not seek circumcision |
| 7:19 |
ForCircumcision neitheris circumcisionnothing countsand foruncircumcision anythingis nornothing; uncircumcision but keepingobeying the commandments of God is everything |
| 7:20 |
EveryLet oneeach shouldof you remain in the statecondition in which heyou waswere called |
| 7:21 |
Were you a slave when called NeverDo mindnot Butbe concerned about it Even if you can gain your freedom availmake yourselfuse of theyour opportunitypresent condition now more than ever |
| 7:22 |
For hewhoever who was called in the Lord as a slave is a freedmanfreed ofperson belonging to the Lord Likewisejust heas whowhoever was free when called is a slave of Christ |
| 7:23 |
You were bought with a price; do not become slaves of menhuman masters |
| 7:24 |
SoIn brethren in whatever statecondition eachyou waswere called therebrothers letand himsisters there remain with God |
| 7:25 |
Now concerning thevirgins unmarried I have no command of the Lord but I give my opinion as one who by the Lords mercy is trustworthy |
| 7:26 |
I think that in view of the presentimpending distresscrisis it is well for ayou person to remain as heyou isare |
| 7:27 |
Are you bound to a wife Do not seek to be free Are you free from a wife Do not seek marriagea wife |
| 7:28 |
But if you marry you do not sin and if a girlvirgin marries she does not sin Yet those who marry will haveexperience worldlydistress troublesin this life and I would spare you that |
| 7:29 |
I mean brethrenbrothers and sisters the appointed time has grown very short; from now on let even those who have wives livebe as though they had none |
| 7:30 |
and those who mourn as though they were not mourning and those who rejoice as though they were not rejoicing and those who buy as though they had no goodspossessions |
| 7:31 |
and those who deal with the world as though they had no dealings with it For the present form of this world is passing away |
| 7:33 |
but the married man is anxious about worldlythe affairs of the world how to please his wife |
| 7:34 |
and his interests are divided And the unmarried woman orand girlthe isvirgin are anxious about the affairs of the Lord howso tothat they may be holy in body and spirit; but the married woman is anxious about worldlythe affairs of the world how to please her husband |
| 7:35 |
I say this for your own benefit not to layput any restraint upon you but to promote good order and tounhindered secure your undivided devotion to the Lord |
| 7:36 |
If anyanyone one thinks that he is not behaving properly toward his betrothedfiancée if his passions are strong and so it has to be let him domarry as he wishes:; let them marry—it is no sin Let them marry |
| 7:37 |
But whoeverif issomeone firmlystands establishedfirm in his heartresolve being under no necessity but having his own desire under control and has determined this in his heartown mind to keep her as his betrothedfiancée he will do well |
| 7:38 |
So thatthen he who marries his betrothedfiancée does well; and he who refrains from marriage will do better |
| 7:39 |
A wife is bound to her husband as long as heher husband lives IfBut if the husband dies she is free to bemarry marriedanyone to whom she wishes only in the Lord |
| 7:40 |
But in my judgment she is happiermore blessed if she remains as she is And I think that I too have the Spirit of God |
| 8:1 |
Now concerning food offeredsacrificed to idols: we know that all of us possess knowledge Knowledge puffs up but love builds up |
| 8:2 |
IfAnyone anywho oneclaims imaginesto thatknow he knows something he does not yet knowhave asthe henecessary oughtknowledge; to know |
| 8:3 |
Butbut ifanyone onewho loves God one is known by him |
| 8:4 |
Hence as to the eating of food offered to idols we know that anno idol hasin nothe realworld existencereally exists and that there is no God but one |
| 8:5 |
ForIndeed althougheven though there may be so called gods in heaven or on earth—as indeedin fact there are many gods and many lords— |
| 8:7 |
HoweverIt is not alleveryone possesshowever who has this knowledge ButSince some throughhave beingbecome hithertoso accustomed to idols eatuntil now they still think of the food they eat as reallyfood offered to an idol; and their conscience being weak is defiled |
| 8:8 |
Food will not commendbring us close to God We are no worse off if we do not eat and no better off if we do |
| 8:9 |
OnlyBut take care lestthat this liberty of yours does not somehow become a stumbling block to the weak |
| 8:10 |
For if anyothers onesee sees you awho manpossess of knowledge ateating table in the temple of an idolsidol temple might hethey not besince encouragedtheir if his conscience is weak be encouraged to eatthe point of eating food offeredsacrificed to idols |
| 8:11 |
AndSo so by your knowledge thisthose weak manbelievers is destroyed the brother for whom Christ died are destroyed |
| 8:12 |
ThusBut sinningwhen you thus sin against members of your brethrenfamily and woundingwound their conscience when it is weak you sin against Christ |
| 8:13 |
Therefore if food is a cause of mytheir brothers falling I will never eat meat lestso that I may not cause myone brotherof them to fall |
| 9:1 |
Am I not free Am I not an apostle Have I not seen Jesus our Lord Are you not you my workmanshipwork in the Lord |
| 9:2 |
If to others I am not an apostle to others at least I am to you; for you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord |
| 9:5 |
Do we not have the right to be accompanied by a believing wife as do the other apostles and the brothers of the Lord and Cephas |
| 9:7 |
Who servesat asany atime soldierpays atthe hisexpenses ownfor expensedoing military service Who plants a vineyard withoutand eatingdoes not eat any of its fruit WhoOr who tends a flock withoutand gettingdoes somenot get any of theits milk |
| 9:8 |
Do I say this on human authority Does not the law also say the same |
| 9:9 |
For it is written in the law of Moses You shall not muzzle an ox whenwhile it is treading out the grain Is it for oxen that God is concerned |
| 9:10 |
DoesOr does he not speak entirely for our sake It was indeed written for our sake becausefor thewhoever plowmanplows should plow in hope and thewhoever thresherthreshes should thresh in hope of a share in the crop |
| 9:12 |
If others share this rightful claim uponon you do not we still more Nevertheless we have not made use of this right but we endure anything rather than put an obstacle in the way of the gospel of Christ |
| 9:13 |
Do you not know that those who are employed in the temple service get their food from the temple and those who serve at the altar share in what is sacrificed on the sacrificialaltar offerings |
| 9:15 |
But I have made no use of any of these rights nor am I writing this toso securethat anythey suchmay provisionbe Forapplied in my case Indeed I would rather die than havethat—no any one will deprive me of my ground for boasting |
| 9:16 |
ForIf if I preachproclaim the gospel thatthis gives me no ground for boasting Forfor necessityan obligation is laid uponon me Woeand woe to me if I do not preachproclaim the gospel |
| 9:18 |
What then is my reward Just this: that in my preachingproclamation I may make the gospel free of charge so as not makingto make full use of my rightrights in the gospel |
| 9:19 |
For though I am free fromwith respect to all men I have made myself a slave to all so that I might win the more of them |
| 9:20 |
To the Jews I became as a Jew in order to win Jews; toTo those under the law I became as one under the law— though notI being myself am not under the law— so that I might win those under the law |
| 9:21 |
To those outside the law I became as one outside the law— though I am not beingfree withoutfrom Gods law towardbut Godam but under theChrists law ofso Christ—that I might win those outside the law |
| 9:22 |
To the weak I became weak so that I might win the weak I have become all things to all menpeople that I might by all means save some |
| 9:23 |
I do it all for the sake of the gospel so that I may share in its blessings |
| 9:24 |
Do you not know that in a race all the runners all compete but only one receives the prize SoRun runin such a way that you may obtainwin it |
| 9:25 |
EveryAthletes athleteexercise exercises self control in all things; Theythey do it to receive a perishable wreath but we an imperishable one |
| 9:26 |
WellSo I do not run aimlessly Inor do notI box as onethough beating the air; |
| 9:27 |
but I pommelpunish my body and subdueenslave it lestso that after preachingproclaiming to others I myself should not be disqualified |
| 10:1 |
I do not want you to knowbe brethrenunaware brothers and sisters that our fathersancestors were all under the cloud and all passed through the sea |
| 10:3 |
and all ate the same supernaturalspiritual food |
| 10:4 |
and all drank the same supernaturalspiritual drink For they drank from the supernaturalspiritual Rockrock whichthat followed them and the Rockrock was Christ |
| 10:5 |
Nevertheless God was not pleased with most of them Godand was not pleased; for they were overthrownstruck down in the wilderness |
| 10:6 |
Now these things areoccurred warningsas examples for us so that we might not to desire evil as they did |
| 10:7 |
Do not bebecome idolaters as some of them weredid; as it is written The people sat down to eat and drink and they rose up to danceplay |
| 10:8 |
We must not indulge in sexual immorality as some of them did and twenty three thousand fell in a single day |
| 10:9 |
We must not put theChrist Lord to the test as some of them did and were destroyed by serpents; |
| 10:10 |
norAnd grumbledo not complain as some of them did and were destroyed by the Destroyerdestroyer |
| 10:11 |
NowThese these things happened to them to serve as aan warningexample butand they were written down forto ourinstruct instructionus uponon whom the endends of the ages hashave come |
| 10:12 |
ThereforeSo letif anyyou onethink whoyou thinksare thatstanding hewatch standsout takethat heedyou lestdo henot fall |
| 10:13 |
No temptationtesting has overtaken you that is not common to maneveryone God is faithful and he will not let you be temptedtested beyond your strength but with the temptationtesting he will also provide the way ofout escapeso that you may be able to endure it |
| 10:14 |
Therefore my beloveddear shunfriends flee from the worship of idols |
| 10:15 |
I speak as to sensible menpeople; judge for yourselves what I say |
| 10:16 |
The cup of blessing whichthat we bless is it not a participationsharing in the blood of Christ The bread whichthat we break is it not a participationsharing in the body of Christ |
| 10:19 |
What do I imply then That food offeredsacrificed to idols is anything or that an idol is anything |
| 10:20 |
No I imply that what pagans sacrifice they offersacrifice to demons and not to God I do not want you to be partners with demons |
| 10:22 |
ShallOr are we provokeprovoking the Lord to jealousy Are we stronger than he |
| 10:23 |
All things are lawful but not all things are helpfulbeneficial All things are lawful but not all things build up |
| 10:24 |
LetDo nonot one seek hisyour own goodadvantage but thethat good of histhe neighborother |
| 10:26 |
Forfor the earth isand theits Lordsfullness andare everythingthe inLords it |
| 10:27 |
If onean ofunbeliever the unbelievers invites you to dinnera meal and you are disposed to go eat whatever is set before you without raising any question on the ground of conscience |
| 10:28 |
But if somesomeone one says to you This has been offered in sacrifice then do not eat it out of consideration for the manone who informed you and for consciencethe sake of conscience— |
| 10:29 |
I mean histhe others conscience not yours—doyour notown eat it For why should my liberty be determinedsubject byto anotherthe mansjudgment scruplesof someone elses conscience |
| 10:30 |
If I partake with thankfulness why amshould I be denounced because of that for which I give thanks |
| 10:31 |
So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do do alleverything tofor the glory of God |
| 10:33 |
just as I try to please alleveryone men in everything I do not seeking my own advantage but that of many so that they may be saved |
| 11:2 |
I commend you because you remember me in everything and maintain the traditions evenjust as I havehanded delivered them on to you |
| 11:3 |
But I want you to understand that Christ is the head of every man and the husband is Christ the head of ahis womanwife isand herGod husbandis and the head of Christ is God |
| 11:4 |
Any man who prays or prophesies with something on his head covereddisgraces dishonors his head |
| 11:5 |
but any woman who prays or prophesies with her head unveiled dishonorsdisgraces her head—it is one and the same thing as ifhaving her head wereshaved shaven |
| 11:6 |
For if a woman will not veil herself then she should cut off her hair; but if it is disgraceful for a woman to behave shornher hair cut off or shavento letbe hershaved she should wear a veil |
| 11:7 |
For a man ought not to coverhave his head veiled since he is the image and gloryreflection of God; but woman is the gloryreflection of man |
| 11:8 |
ForIndeed man was not made from woman but woman from man |
| 11:9 |
Neither was man created for the sake of woman but woman for the sake of man |
| 11:10 |
ThatFor isthis whyreason a woman ought to have a veilsymbol of authority on her head because of the angels |
| 11:11 |
Nevertheless in the Lord woman is not independent of man noror man independent of woman; |
| 11:12 |
forFor just as woman wascame made from man so man iscomes nowthrough born of woman; Andbut all things arecome from God |
| 11:13 |
Judge for yourselves;: is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncoveredunveiled |
| 11:14 |
Does not nature itself teach you that forif a man towears wear long hair it is degrading to him |
| 11:15 |
but if a woman has long hair it is her prideglory For her hair is given to her for a covering |
| 11:16 |
IfBut anyif oneanyone is disposed to be contentious —we recognizehave no othersuch practicecustom nor do the churches of God |
| 11:17 |
ButNow in the following instructions I do not commend you because when you come together it is not for the better but for the worse |
| 11:18 |
For into thebegin firstwith place when you assemblecome together as a church I hear that there are divisions among you; and to some extent I partly believe it |
| 11:19 |
forIndeed there musthave to be factions among you infor orderonly thatso thosewill whoit arebecome genuineclear who among you mayare begenuine recognized |
| 11:20 |
When you meetcome together it is not really to eat the Lords supper that you eat |
| 11:21 |
For inwhen eatingthe time comes to eat each oneof you goes ahead with hisyour own mealsupper and one isgoes hungry and another isbecomes drunk |
| 11:22 |
What Do you not have houseshomes to eat and drink in Or do you despiseshow contempt for the church of God and humiliate those who have nothing What shallshould I say to you ShallShould I commend you inIn this Nomatter I willdo not commend you |
| 11:23 |
For I received from the Lord what I also deliveredhanded on to you that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took a loaf of bread |
| 11:24 |
and when he had given thanks he broke it and said This is my body whichthat is for you Do this in remembrance of me |
| 11:25 |
In the same way alsohe took the cup also after supper saying This cup is the new covenant in my blood Do this as often as you drink it in remembrance of me |
| 11:27 |
Whoever therefore eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guiltyanswerable offor profaning the body and blood of the Lord |
| 11:28 |
LetExamine ayourselves manand examineonly himselfthen and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup |
| 11:29 |
For anyall one who eatseat and drinksdrink without discerning the body eatseat and drinksdrink judgment uponagainst himselfthemselves |
| 11:30 |
ThatFor isthis whyreason many of you are weak and ill and some have died |
| 11:31 |
But if we judged ourselves truly we shouldwould not be judged |
| 11:32 |
But when we are judged by the Lord we are chasteneddisciplined so that we may not be condemned along with the world |
| 11:33 |
So then my brethrenbrothers and sisters when you come together to eat wait for one another— |
| 11:34 |
ifIf anyyou oneare is hungry let him eat at home—lest so that when you come together toit will not be condemnedfor your condemnation About the other things I will give directionsinstructions when I come |
| 12:1 |
Now concerning spiritual gifts brethrenbrothers and sisters I do not want you to be uninformed |
| 12:2 |
You know that when you were heathenpagans you were enticed and led astray to dumb idols howeverthat youcould maynot havespeak been moved |
| 12:3 |
Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking by the Spirit of God ever says Let Jesus be cursed and no one can say Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit |
| 12:5 |
and there are varieties of serviceservices but the same Lord; |
| 12:6 |
and there are varieties of workingactivities but it is the same God who inspiresactivates all of them all in everyeveryone one |
| 12:10 |
to another the working of miracles to another prophecy to another the abilitydiscernment toof distinguish between spirits to another various kinds of tongues to another the interpretation of tongues |
| 12:11 |
All these are inspiredactivated by one and the same Spirit who apportionsallots to each one individually just as hethe willsSpirit chooses |
| 12:13 |
For byin the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks slaves or free—and allwe were all made to drink of one Spirit |
| 12:14 |
ForIndeed the body does not consist of one member but of many |
| 12:15 |
If the foot shouldwould say Because I am not a hand I do not belong to the body that would not make it any less a part of the body |
| 12:16 |
And if the ear shouldwould say Because I am not an eye I do not belong to the body that would not make it any less a part of the body |
| 12:17 |
If the whole body were an eye where would be the hearing be If the whole body were anhearing ear where would be the sense of smell be |
| 12:18 |
But as it is God arranged the organsmembers in the body each one of them as he chose |
| 12:19 |
If all were a single organmember where would the body be |
| 12:20 |
As it is there are many partsmembers yet one body |
| 12:22 |
On the contrary the partsmembers of the body whichthat seem to be weaker are indispensable |
| 12:23 |
and those partsmembers of the body whichthat we think less honorable we investclothe with the greater honor and our unpresentableless partsrespectable members are treated with greater modestyrespect; |
| 12:24 |
whichwhereas our more presentablerespectable partsmembers do not requireneed this But God has so composedarranged the body giving the greater honor to the inferior partmember |
| 12:25 |
that there may be no discorddissension inwithin the body but that the members may have the same care for one another |
| 12:26 |
If one member suffers all suffer together with it; if one member is honored all rejoice together with it |
| 12:28 |
And God has appointed in the church first apostles second prophets third teachers; then workersdeeds of miraclespower then healersgifts helpersof administratorshealing speakersforms inof assistance forms of leadership various kinds of tongues |
| 12:30 |
Do all possess gifts of healing Do all speak within tongues Do all interpret |
| 12:31 |
But earnestlystrive desirefor the highergreater gifts And I will show you a still more excellent way |
| 13:1 |
If I speak in the tongues of menmortals and of angels but havedo not have love I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal |
| 13:2 |
And if I have prophetic powers and understand all mysteries and all knowledge and if I have all faith so as to remove mountains but havedo not have love I am nothing |
| 13:3 |
If I give away all Imy havepossessions and if I deliverhand over my body toso bethat burnedI may boast but havedo not have love I gain nothing |
| 13:4 |
Love is patient; andlove is kind; love is not jealousenvious or boastful; or arrogant |
| 13:5 |
it is not arrogant or rude LoveIt does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; |
| 13:6 |
it does not rejoice atin wrongwrongdoing but rejoices in the righttruth |
| 13:7 |
LoveIt bears all things believes all things hopes all things endures all things |
| 13:8 |
Love never ends; But as for prophecies they will passcome awayto an end; as for tongues they will cease; as for knowledge it will passcome awayto an end |
| 13:9 |
For ourwe knowledgeknow isonly imperfectin part and ourwe prophecyprophesy isonly imperfectin part; |
| 13:10 |
but when the perfectcomplete comes the imperfectpartial will passcome awayto an end |
| 13:11 |
When I was a child I spoke like a child I thought like a child I reasoned like a child; when I became aan manadult I gaveput upan end to childish ways |
| 13:12 |
For now we see in a mirror dimly but then we will see face to face Now I know only in part; then I shallwill understandknow fully even as I have been fully understoodknown |
| 13:13 |
SoAnd now faith hope and love abide these three; butand the greatest of these is love |
| 14:1 |
MakePursue love your aim and earnestlystrive desirefor the spiritual gifts and especially that you may prophesy |
| 14:2 |
For onethose who speaksspeak in a tongue speaksdo not speak to menother people but to God; for nonobody one understands himthem butsince hethey uttersare speaking mysteries in the Spirit |
| 14:3 |
On the other hand hethose who prophesiesprophesy speaksspeak to menother people for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation |
| 14:4 |
HeThose who speaksspeak in a tongue edifiesbuild himselfup themselves but hethose who prophesiesprophesy edifiesbuild up the church |
| 14:5 |
Now I wantwould youlike all of you to speak in tongues but even more to prophesy HeOne who prophesies is greater than heone who speaks in tongues unless somesomeone one interprets so that the church may be edifiedbuilt up |
| 14:6 |
Now brethrenbrothers and sisters if I come to you speaking in tongues how shallwill I benefit you unless I bringspeak to you in some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or teaching |
| 14:7 |
IfIt evenis the same way with lifeless instruments that produce sound such as the flute or the harp If they do not give distinct notes how will anyanyone one know what is being played |
| 14:9 |
So with yourselves; if you in a tongue you utter speech that is not intelligible how will anyanyone one know what is being said For you will be speaking into the air |
| 14:10 |
There are doubtless many different languageskinds of sounds in the world and nonenothing is without meaning;sound |
| 14:11 |
butIf ifthen I do not know the meaning of thea languagesound I shallwill be a foreigner to the speaker and the speaker a foreigner to me |
| 14:12 |
So with yourselves; since you are eager for manifestationsspiritual ofgifts the Spirit strive to excel in them for building up the church |
| 14:13 |
Therefore heone who speaks in a tongue should pray for the power to interpret |
| 14:14 |
For if I pray in a tongue my spirit prays but my mind is unfruitfulunproductive |
| 14:15 |
What amshould I to do then I will pray with the spirit andbut I will pray with the mind also; I will sing praise with the spirit andbut I will sing praise with the mind also |
| 14:16 |
Otherwise if you blesssay a blessing with the spirit how can anyanyone one in the position of an outsider say the Amen to your thanksgiving whensince hethe outsider does not know what you are saying |
| 14:17 |
For you may give thanks well enough but the other manperson is not edifiedbuilt up |
| 14:18 |
I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you all; |
| 14:19 |
nevertheless in church I would rather speak five words with my mind in order to instruct others also than ten thousand words in a tongue |
| 14:20 |
BrethrenBrothers and sisters do not be children in your thinking; rather be babesinfants in evil but in thinking be matureadults |
| 14:21 |
In the law it is written By menpeople of strange tongues and by the lips of foreigners I will I speak to this people; andyet even then they will not listen to me says the Lord |
| 14:22 |
ThusTongues tonguesthen are a sign not for believers but for unbelievers while prophecy is not for unbelievers but for believers |
| 14:23 |
If therefore the whole church assemblescomes together and all speak in tongues and outsiders or unbelievers enter will they not say that you are madout of your mind |
| 14:24 |
But if all prophesy and an unbeliever or outsider who enters he is convictedreproved by all heand is called to account by all |
| 14:25 |
After the secrets of histhe unbelievers heart are disclosed; andthat soperson fallingwill onbow hisdown facebefore heGod willand worship Godhim anddeclaring declare that God is really among you |
| 14:26 |
What should be done then brethrenmy friends When you come together each one has a hymn a lesson a revelation a tongue or an interpretation Let all things be done for edificationbuilding up |
| 14:27 |
If anyanyone speakspeaks in a tongue let there be only two or at most three and each in turn; and let one interpret |
| 14:28 |
But if there is no one to interpret let each of them keepbe silencesilent in church and speak to himselfthemselves and to God |
| 14:30 |
If a revelation is made to anothersomeone else sitting bynearby let the first person be silent |
| 14:31 |
For you can all prophesy one by one so that all may learn and all be encouraged; |
| 14:32 |
andAnd the spirits of prophets are subject to the prophets |
| 14:33 |
Forfor God is not a God not of confusiondisorder but of peace As in all the churches of the saints |
| 14:34 |
the women should keepbe silencesilent in the churches For they are not permitted to speak but should be subordinate as even the law also says |
| 14:36 |
WhatOr Diddid the word of God originate with you orOr are you the only ones it has reached |
| 14:37 |
IfAnyone anywho oneclaims thinksto thatbe he is a prophet or to have spiritual hepowers shouldmust acknowledge that what I am writing to you is a command of the Lord |
| 14:38 |
IfAnyone anywho one does not recognize this he is not to be recognized |
| 14:39 |
So my brethrenfriends earnestlybe desireeager to prophesy and do not forbid speaking in tongues; |
| 15:1 |
Now I would remind you brethrenbrothers inand whatsisters termsof the good news that I preachedproclaimed to you the gospel which you in turn received in which also you stand |
| 15:2 |
bythrough which also you are being saved if you hold itfirmly fastto the message that I proclaimed to you—unless you believedhave come to believe in vain |
| 15:3 |
For I deliveredhanded on to you as of first importance what I alsoin turn had received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures |
| 15:4 |
and that he was buried and that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures |
| 15:6 |
Then he appeared to more than five hundred brethrenbrothers and sisters at one time most of whom are still alive though some have fallendied asleep |
| 15:10 |
But by the grace of God I am what I am and his grace toward me washas not been in vain On the contrary I worked harder than any of them —though it was not I but the grace of God whichthat is with me |
| 15:11 |
Whether then it was I or they so we preachproclaim and so you believedhave come to believe |
| 15:12 |
Now if Christ is preachedproclaimed as raised from the dead how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead |
| 15:13 |
ButIf if there is no resurrection of the dead then Christ has not been raised; |
| 15:14 |
and if Christ has not been raised then our preachingproclamation ishas been in vain and your faith ishas been in vain |
| 15:15 |
We are even found to be misrepresenting God because we testified of God that he raised Christ —whom he did not raise if it is true that the dead are not raised |
| 15:18 |
Then those also who have fallendied asleep in Christ have perished |
| 15:19 |
If for this life only we have hoped in Christ we are of all menpeople most to be pitied |
| 15:20 |
But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead the first fruits of those who have fallendied asleep |
| 15:21 |
For assince bydeath a man came deaththrough by a manhuman hasbeing come also the resurrection of the dead has also come through a human being; |
| 15:22 |
Forfor as in Adam all die so also in ChristAdam shallso all will be made alive in Christ |
| 15:24 |
Then comes the end when he delivershands over the kingdom to God the Father after destroyinghe has destroyed every ruleruler and every authority and power |
| 15:27 |
For God has put all things in subjection under his feet But when it says All things are put in subjection under him it is plain that hethis isdoes exceptednot include the one who put all things in subjection under him |
| 15:28 |
When all things are subjected to him then the Son himself will also be subjected to himthe one who put all things in subjection under him so that God may be everythingall toin every oneall |
| 15:29 |
Otherwise what dowill those people meando bywho beingreceive baptizedbaptism on behalf of the dead If the dead are not raised at all why are people baptized on their behalf |
| 15:30 |
WhyAnd amwhy Iare we putting ourselves in perildanger every hour |
| 15:31 |
I protestdie brethrenevery byday That is as certain brothers and sisters as my prideboasting inof you—a whichboast that I havemake in Christ Jesus our Lord I die every day |
| 15:32 |
WhatIf dowith Imerely gainhuman ifhopes humanly speaking I fought with beastswild animals at Ephesus what would I have gained by it If the dead are not raised Let us eat and drink for tomorrow we die |
| 15:34 |
Come to youra sober and right mind and sin no more; Forfor some people have no knowledge of God I say this to your shame |
| 15:35 |
But somesomeone one will ask How are the dead raised With what kind of body do they come |
| 15:36 |
YouFool foolish man What you sow does not come to life unless it dies |
| 15:37 |
And as for what you sow isyou do not sow the body whichthat is to be but a bare kernelseed perhaps of wheat or of some other grain |
| 15:39 |
ForNot not all flesh is alike but there is one kindflesh for menhuman beings another for animals another for birds and another for fish |
| 15:40 |
There are celestialboth heavenly bodies and thereearthly are terrestrial bodies; but the glory of the celestialheavenly is one thing and thethat glory of the terrestrialearthly is another |
| 15:41 |
There is one glory of the sun and another glory of the moon and another glory of the stars; forindeed star differs from star in glory |
| 15:42 |
So it is it with the resurrection of the dead What is sown is perishable what is raised is imperishable |
| 15:46 |
But it is not the spiritual whichthat is first but the physical and then the spiritual |
| 15:49 |
Just as we have borne the image of the man of dust we shallwill also bear the image of the man of heaven |
| 15:50 |
What I tellam yousaying brothers and sisters is this brethren: flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable |
| 15:51 |
LoListen I will tell you a mystery We shallwill not all sleepdie but we shallwill all be changed |
| 15:52 |
in a moment in the twinkling of an eye at the last trumpet For the trumpet will sound and the dead will be raised imperishable and we shallwill be changed |
| 15:53 |
For this perishable naturebody must put on theimperishability imperishable and this mortal naturebody must put on immortality |
| 15:54 |
When thethis perishable body puts on theimperishability imperishable and thethis mortal body puts on immortality then shall come to pass the saying that is written will be fulfilled: Death ishas been swallowed up in victory |
| 15:55 |
Where O death where is thyyour victory Where O death where is thyyour sting |
| 15:58 |
Therefore my beloved brethren be steadfast immovable always aboundingexcelling in the work of the Lord knowingbecause you know that in the Lord your labor is not in vain |
| 16:1 |
Now concerning the contributioncollection for the saints: asyou Ishould directedfollow the churchesdirections ofI Galatiagave soto youthe alsochurches areof toGalatia do |
| 16:2 |
On the first day of every week each of you is to put something aside and storesave itwhatever upextra asyou heearn may prosper so that contributionscollections need not be madetaken when I come |
| 16:3 |
And when I arrive I will send thoseany whom you accreditapprove bywith letterletters to carrytake your gift to Jerusalem |
| 16:5 |

| 16:6 |
and perhaps I will stay with you or even spend the winter so that you may speedsend me on my journeyway wherever I go |
| 16:7 |
For I do not want to see you now just in passing; for I hope to spend some time with you if the Lord permits |
| 16:10 |
WhenIf Timothy comes see that youhe puthas himnothing atto easefear among you for he is doing the work of the Lord just as I am; |
| 16:11 |
Sotherefore let no one despise him SpeedSend him on his way in peace so that he may returncome to me; for I am expecting him with the brethrenbrothers |
| 16:12 |
AsNow forconcerning our brother Apol′losApollos I strongly urged him to visit you with the other brethrenbrothers but ithe was not at all hiswilling will to come now He will come when he has the opportunity |
| 16:13 |
BeKeep watchfulalert stand firm in your faith be courageous be strong |
| 16:15 |
Now brethrenbrothers and sisters you know that members of the household of Steph′anasStephanas were the first converts in Acha′iaAchaia and they have devoted themselves to the service of the saints; |
| 16:16 |
I urge you to beput subjectyourselves toat the service of such menpeople and toof everyeveryone fellowwho workerworks and laborertoils with them |
| 16:17 |
I rejoice at the coming of Steph′anasStephanas and Fortuna′tusFortunatus and Acha′icusAchaicus because they have made up for your absence; |
| 16:18 |
for they refreshed my spirit as well as yours GiveSo give recognition to such menpersons |
| 16:19 |
The churches of Asia send greetings Aq′uilaAquila and Prisca together with the church in their house sendgreet you heartywarmly greetings in the Lord |
| 16:20 |
All the brethrenbrothers and sisters send greetings Greet one another with a holy kiss |
| 16:22 |
IfLet anyanyone onebe accursed who has no love for the Lord let him be accursed Our Lord come |
| 16:24 |
My love be with all of you all in Christ Jesus Amen |
