| 1:3 |
All things were created through Himhim, and apart from Himhim not one thing was created that has been created. |
| 1:4 |
LifeIn him was in Himlife, and that life was the light of men. |
| 1:5 |
That light shines in the darkness, and yet the darkness did not overcome it. |
| 1:6 |
There was a man namedsent Johnfrom whoGod waswhose sentname fromwas GodJohn. |
| 1:9 |
The true light, whothat gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. |
| 1:10 |
He was in the world, and the world was created through Himhim, and yet the world did not recognize Himhim. |
| 1:11 |
He came to Hishis own, and Hishis own people did not receive Himhim. |
| 1:12 |
But to all who did receive Himhim, Hehe gave them the right to be children of God, to those who believe in Hishis name, |
| 1:13 |
who were born, not of bloodnatural descent, or of the will of the flesh, or of the will of man, but of God. |
| 1:14 |
The Word became flesh and tookdwelt up residence among us. We observed Hishis glory, the glory as the Oneone and Onlyonly Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. |
| 1:15 |
(John testified concerning Himhim and exclaimed, “This was the Oneone of whom I said, ‘The Oneone coming after me hasranks surpassedahead of me, because Hehe existed before me.’”) |
| 1:16 |
Indeed, we have all received grace afterupon grace from Hishis fullness, |
| 1:17 |
for the law was given through Moses,; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. |
| 1:18 |
No one has ever seen God. The Oneone and Onlyonly Son—, thewho Oneis whohimself God and is at the Father’s side — Hehe has revealed Himhim. |
| 1:19 |
This iswas John’s testimony when the Jews from Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him, “Who are you?” |
| 1:20 |
He diddidn’t notdeny refuseit tobut answerconfessed, but he declared: “I am not the Messiah.” |
| 1:23 |
He said, “I am a voice of one crying out in the wilderness: Make straight the way of the Lord — just as Isaiah the prophet said.” |
| 1:26 |
“I baptize with water,” John answered them. “Someone stands among you, but you don’t know Himhim. |
| 1:27 |
He is the Oneone coming after me, whose sandal strap I’m not worthy to untie.” |
| 1:29 |
The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “HereLook, is the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! |
| 1:30 |
This is the Oneone I told you about: ‘After me comes a man who hasranks surpassedahead of me, because Hehe existed before me.’ |
| 1:31 |
I didn’t know Himhim, but I came baptizing with water so Hethat he might be revealed to Israel.” |
| 1:32 |
And John testified, “I watchedsaw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and Hehe rested on Himhim. |
| 1:33 |
I didn’t know Himhim, but Hehe who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The Oneone you see the Spirit descending and resting on —He he is the Oneone who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ |
| 1:34 |
I have seen and testified that Hethis is the Son of God!”.” |
| 1:35 |
AgainThe the next day, John was standing with two of his disciples. |
| 1:36 |
When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look!, Thethe Lamb of God!” |
| 1:38 |
When Jesus turned and noticed them following Himhim, Hehe asked them, “What are you looking for?” They said to Himhim, “Rabbi” (which means “Teacher”), “where are Youyou staying?” |
| 1:39 |
“Come and you’ll see,” Hehe replied. So they went and saw where Hehe was staying, and they stayed with Himhim that day. It was about 10four in the morningafternoon. |
| 1:40 |
Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard John and followed Himhim. |
| 1:41 |
He first found his own brother Simon and told him, “We have found the Messiah!”” (which meansis translated “Anointedthe OneChrist”), |
| 1:42 |
and he brought Simon to Jesus. When Jesus saw him, Hehe said, “You are Simon, son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which meansis translated “RockPeter”). |
| 1:43 |
The next day HeJesus decided to leave for Galilee. JesusHe found Philip and told him, “Follow Me!”me.” |
| 1:45 |
Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the Oneone Moses wrote about in the Lawlaw (and so did the prophets): Jesus the son of Joseph, from Nazareth!”.” |
| 1:47 |
Then Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward Himhim and said about him, “Here truly is aan true Israelite; noin deceitwhom there is inno himdeceit.” |
| 1:49 |
“Rabbi,” Nathanael replied, “You are the Son of God!; Youyou are the King of Israel!” |
| 1:50 |
Jesus responded to him, “Do you believe only because I told you I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than this.” |
| 1:51 |
Then Hehe said, “Truly I assuretell you:, Youyou will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.” |
| 2:1 |
On the third day a wedding took place in Cana of Galilee. Jesus’s mother was there, and |
| 2:2 |
and Jesus and Hishis disciples were invited to the wedding as well. |
| 2:3 |
When the wine ran out, Jesus’s mother told Himhim, “They don’t have any wine.” |
| 2:4 |
“What has this concern of yours to do with Meme, woman?” Jesus asked. “My hour has not yet come.” |
| 2:5 |
“Do whatever Hehe tells you,” Hishis mother told the servants. |
| 2:6 |
Now six stone water jars had been set there for Jewish purification. Each contained 20twenty or 30thirty gallons. |
| 2:7 |
“Fill the jars with water,” Jesus told them. So they filled them to the brim. |
| 2:8 |
Then Hehe said to them, “Now draw some out and take it to the chief servantheadwaiter.” And they did. |
| 2:9 |
When the chiefheadwaiter servant tasted the water (after it had become wine), he did not know where it came from — though the servants who had drawn the water knew. He called the groom |
| 2:10 |
and told him, “Everyone sets out the fine wine first, then, after people haveare drunk freely, the inferior. But you have kept the fine wine until now.” |
| 2:11 |
Jesus performeddid this, the first signof his signs, in Cana of Galilee. He displayedrevealed Hishis glory, and Hishis disciples believed in Himhim. |
| 2:12 |
After this, Hehe went down to Capernaum, together with Hishis mother, Hishis brothers, and Hishis disciples, and they stayed there only a few days. |
| 2:13 |
The Jewish Passover was near, and so Jesus went up to Jerusalem. |
| 2:14 |
In the temple complexhe He found people selling oxen, sheep, and doves, and Hehe also found the money changers sitting there. |
| 2:15 |
After making a whip out of cords, Hehe drove everyone out of the temple complex with their sheep and oxen. He also poured out the money changers’ coins and overturned the tables. |
| 2:16 |
He told those who were selling doves, “Get these things out of here! Stop turning Mymy Father’s house into a marketplace!” |
| 2:17 |
And Hishis disciples remembered that it is written: Zeal for Youryour house will consume Meme. |
| 2:18 |
So the Jews replied to Himhim, “What sign of authority will Youyou show us for doing these things?” |
| 2:19 |
Jesus answered, “Destroy this sanctuarytemple, and I will raise it up in three days.” |
| 2:20 |
Therefore the Jews said, “This sanctuarytemple took 46forty-six years to build, and will Youyou raise it up in three days?” |
| 2:21 |
But Hehe was speaking about the sanctuarytemple of Hishis body. |
| 2:22 |
So when Hehe was raised from the dead, Hishis disciples remembered that Hehe had said this., Andand they believed the Scripture and the statement Jesus had made. |
| 2:23 |
While Hehe was in Jerusalem atduring the Passover Festival, many trustedbelieved in Hishis name when they saw the signs Hehe was doing. |
| 2:24 |
Jesus, however, would not entrust Himselfhimself to them, since Hehe knew them all |
| 2:25 |
and because Hehe did not need anyone to testify about man; for Hehe Himselfhimself knew what was in man. |
| 3:2 |
This man came to Himhim at night and said, “Rabbi, we know that Youyou haveare a teacher who has come from God as a teacher, for no one could perform these signs Youyou do unless God were with him.” |
| 3:3 |
Jesus replied, “Truly I assuretell you:, Unlessunless someone is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” |
| 3:4 |
“ButHow how can anyone be born when he is old?” Nicodemus asked Himhim. “Can he enter his mother’s womb a second time and be born?” |
| 3:5 |
Jesus answered, “Truly I assuretell you:, Unlessunless someone is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. |
| 3:10 |
“Are you a teacher of Israel and don’t know these things?” Jesus replied. |
| 3:11 |
“Truly I assuretell you:, Wewe speak what Wewe know and Wewe testify to what Wewe have seen, but you do not accept Ourour testimony. |
| 3:12 |
If I have told you about earthly things that happen on earth and you don’t believe, how will you believe if I tell you about heavenly things of heaven? |
| 3:13 |
No one has ascended into heaven except the Oneone who descended from heaven — the Son of Man. |
| 3:14 |
“Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, |
| 3:15 |
so that everyone who believes in Himhim willmay have eternal life. |
| 3:16 |
“For God loved the world in this way: He gave Hishis Oneone and Onlyonly Son, so that everyone who believes in Himhim will not perish but have eternal life. |
| 3:17 |
For God did not send Hishis Son into the world thatto He might condemn the world, but thatto save the world might be saved through Himhim. |
| 3:18 |
Anyone who believes in Himhim is not condemned, but anyone who does not believe is already condemned, because he has not believed in the name of the Oneone and Onlyonly Son of God. |
| 3:19 |
“This, then, is the judgment: The light has come into the world, and people loved darkness rather than the light because their deeds were evil. |
| 3:20 |
For everyone who practicesdoes wickedevil things hates the light and avoids it, so that his deeds may not be exposed. |
| 3:22 |
After this, Jesus and Hishis disciples went to the Judean countryside, where Hehe spent time with them and baptized. |
| 3:26 |
So they came to John and told him, “Rabbi, the Oneone you testified about, and who was with you across the Jordan, is baptizing — and everyone is flockinggoing to Himhim.” |
| 3:27 |
John responded, “No one can receive aanything single thing unless it’s has been given to him from heaven. |
| 3:28 |
You yourselves can testify that I said, ‘I am not the Messiah, but I’ve been sent ahead of Himhim.’ |
| 3:31 |
The Oneone who comes from above is above all. The one who is from the earth is earthly and speaks in earthly terms. The Oneone who comes from heaven is above all. |
| 3:32 |
He testifies to what Hehe has seen and heard, and yet no one accepts Hishis testimony. |
| 3:33 |
The one who has accepted Hishis testimony has affirmed that God is true. |
| 3:34 |
For Godthe sentone Him,whom andGod Hesent speaks God’s words, since Hehe gives the Spirit without measure. |
| 3:35 |
The Father loves the Son and has given all things into Hishis hands. |
| 3:36 |
The one who believes in the Son has eternal life, but the one who refusesrejects to believe in the Son will not see life; instead, the wrath of God remains on him. |
| 4:1 |
When Jesus knewlearned that the Pharisees had heard Hehe was making and baptizing more disciples than John |
| 4:2 |
(though Jesus Himselfhimself was not baptizing, but Hishis disciples were), |
| 4:3 |
Hehe left Judea and went again to Galilee. |
| 4:4 |
He had to travel through Samaria,; |
| 4:5 |
so Hehe came to a town of Samaria called Sychar near the property that Jacob had given his son Joseph. |
| 4:6 |
Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, worn out from Hishis journey, sat down at the well. It was about sixnoon. in the evening. |
| 4:7 |
A woman of Samaria came to draw water. “Give Meme a drink,” Jesus said to her, |
| 4:8 |
forbecause Hishis disciples had gone into town to buy food. |
| 4:9 |
“How is it that Youyou, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?” she asked Himhim. For Jews do not associate with Samaritans. |
| 4:10 |
Jesus answered, “If you knew the gift of God, and who is saying to you, ‘Give Meme a drink,’ you would ask Himhim, and Hehe would give you living water.” |
| 4:11 |
“Sir,” said the woman, “Youyou don’t even have a bucket, and the well is deep. So where do Youyou get this ‘living water’? |
| 4:12 |
You aren’t greater than our father Jacob, are Youyou? He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and livestock.” |
| 4:14 |
But whoever drinks from the water that I will give him will never get thirsty again—ever!. In fact, the water I will give him will become a well of water springing up withinin him for eternal life.” |
| 4:15 |
“Sir,” the woman said to Himhim, “give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and come here to draw water.” |
| 4:16 |
“Go call your husband,” Hehe told her, “and come back here.” |
| 4:19 |
“Sir,” the woman replied, “I see that Youyou are a prophet. |
| 4:20 |
Our fathersancestors worshiped on this mountain, yetbut you Jews say that the place to worship is in Jerusalem.” |
| 4:21 |
Jesus told her, “Believe Meme, woman, an hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. |
| 4:23 |
But an hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spiritSpirit and in truth. Yes, the Father wants such people to worship Himhim. |
| 4:24 |
God is spirit, and those who worship Himhim must worship in spiritSpirit and in truth.” |
| 4:25 |
The woman said to Himhim, “I know that the Messiah is coming” (who is called Christ). “When Hehe comes, Hehe will explain everything to us.” |
| 4:26 |
“I am He,” Jesus told her, “I, the Oneone speaking to you, am he.” |
| 4:27 |
Just then Hishis disciples arrived, and they were amazed that Hehe was talking with a woman. Yet no one said, “What do Youyou want?” or “Why are Youyou talking with her?” |
| 4:28 |
Then the woman left her water jar, went into town, and told the menpeople, |
| 4:29 |
“Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did!. Could this be the Messiah?” |
| 4:30 |
They left the town and made their way to Himhim. |
| 4:31 |
In the meantime the disciples kept urging Himhim, “Rabbi, eat something.” |
| 4:32 |
But Hehe said, “I have food to eat that you don’t know about.” |
| 4:33 |
The disciples said to one another, “Could someone have brought Himhim something to eat?” |
| 4:34 |
“My food is to do the will of Himhim who sent Meme and to finish Hishis work,” Jesus told them. |
| 4:35 |
“Don’t you say, ‘There are still four more months, and then comes the harvest’? Listen to what I’m telling you: Open your eyes and look at the fields, forbecause they are ready for harvest. |
| 4:36 |
The reaper is already receiving pay and gathering fruit for eternal life, so that the sower and reaper can rejoice together. |
| 4:39 |
Now many Samaritans from that town believed in Himhim because of what the woman said when she testified, “He told me everything I ever did.” |
| 4:40 |
Therefore,So when the Samaritans came to Himhim, they asked Himhim to stay with them, and Hehe stayed there two days. |
| 4:41 |
Many more believed because of what Hehe said. |
| 4:42 |
And they told the woman, “We no longer believe because of what you said, forsince we have heard for ourselves and know that this really is the Savior of the world.” |
| 4:43 |
After two days Hehe left there for Galilee. |
| 4:44 |
(Jesus Himselfhimself had testified that a prophet has no honor in his own country.) |
| 4:45 |
When they entered Galilee, the Galileans welcomed Himhim because they had seen everything Hehe did in Jerusalem during the festival. For they also had gone to the festival. |
| 4:46 |
Then He went again to Cana of Galilee, where Hehe had turned the water into wine. There was a certain royal official whose son was ill at Capernaum. |
| 4:47 |
When this man heard that Jesus had come from Judea into Galilee, he went to Himhim and pleaded with Himhim to come down and heal his son, forsince he was about to die. |
| 4:49 |
“Sir,” the official said to Himhim, “come down before my boy dies!”.” |
| 4:50 |
“Go,” Jesus told him, “your son will live.” The man believed what Jesus said to him and departed. |
| 4:51 |
While he was still going down, his slavesservants met him saying that his boy was alive. |
| 4:52 |
He asked them at what time he got better. “Yesterday at sevenone in the morningafternoon the fever left him,” they answered. |
| 4:53 |
The father realized this was the very hour at which Jesus had told him, “Your son will live.” ThenSo he himself believed, along with his whole household. |
| 4:54 |
This,Now therefore, this was also the second sign Jesus performed after Hehe came from Judea to Galilee. |
| 5:2 |
By the Sheep Gate in Jerusalem there is a pool, called Bethesda in HebrewAramaic, which has five colonnades. |
| 5:3 |
Within these lay a large number of the sickdisabled — blind, lame, and paralyzed. [—waiting for the moving of the water, |
| 5:4 |
because an angel would go down into the pool from time to time and stir up the water. Then the first one who got in after the water was stirred up recovered from whatever ailment he had]. |
| 5:5 |
One man was there who had been sickdisabled for 38thirty-eight years. |
| 5:6 |
When Jesus saw him lying there and knewrealized he had already been there a long time, Hehe said to him, “Do you want to get well?” |
| 5:7 |
“Sir,” the sickdisabled man answered, “I don’t have ano manone to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, but while I’m coming, someone goes down ahead of me.” |
| 5:8 |
“Get up,” Jesus told him, “pick up your mat and walk!”.” |
| 5:10 |
and so the Jews said to the man who had been healed, “This is the Sabbath!. It’sThe illegallaw forprohibits you tofrom pickpicking up your mat.” |
| 5:13 |
But the man who was curedhealed did not know who it was, because Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there. |
| 5:14 |
After this, Jesus found him in the temple complex and said to him, “See, you are well. Do not sin anymore, so that something worse doesn’t happen to you.” |
| 5:16 |
Therefore, the Jews began persecuting Jesus because Hehe was doing these things on the Sabbath. |
| 5:17 |
But Jesus responded to them, “My Father is still working, and I am working also.” |
| 5:18 |
This is why the Jews began trying all the more to kill Himhim: Not only was Hehe breaking the Sabbath, but Hehe was even calling God Hishis own Father, making Himselfhimself equal withto God. |
| 5:19 |
Then Jesus replied, “Truly I assuretell you:, Thethe Son is not able to do anything on Hishis own, but only what Hehe sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, the Son alsolikewise does these things in the same way. |
| 5:20 |
For the Father loves the Son and shows Himhim everything Hehe is doing, and Hehe will show Himhim greater works than these so that you will be amazed. |
| 5:21 |
And just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so the Son also gives life to anyonewhom Hehe wants to. |
| 5:23 |
so that all people willmay honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Anyone who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Himhim. |
| 5:24 |
“Truly I assuretell you:, Anyoneanyone who hears Mymy word and believes Himhim who sent Meme has eternal life and will not come under judgment but has passed from death to life. |
| 5:25 |
“Truly I assuretell you:, Anan hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. |
| 5:26 |
For just as the Father has life in Himselfhimself, so also Hehe has granted to the Son to have life in Himselfhimself. |
| 5:27 |
And Hehe has granted Himhim the right to pass judgment, because Hehe is the Son of Man. |
| 5:28 |
Do not be amazed at this, because a time is coming when all who are in the graves will hear Hishis voice |
| 5:29 |
and come out — those who have done good things, to the resurrection of life, but those who have done wicked things, to the resurrection of judgmentcondemnation. |
| 5:30 |
“I can do nothing on Mymy own. I judge only as I hear, and Mymy judgment is righteousjust, because I do not seek Mymy own will, but the will of Himhim who sent Meme. |
| 5:31 |
“If I testify about Myselfmyself, Mymy testimony is not validtrue. |
| 5:32 |
There is Anotheranother who testifies about Meme, and I know that the testimony Hehe gives about Meme is validtrue. |
| 5:33 |
You have sent messengers to John, and he has testified to the truth. |
| 5:34 |
I don’t receive man’shuman testimony, but I say these things so that you may be saved. |
| 5:35 |
John was a burning and shining lamp, and for a time you were willing to enjoyrejoice for a while in his light. |
| 5:36 |
“But I have a greater testimony than John’s because of the works that the Father has given Meme to accomplish. These very works I am doing testify about Meme that the Father has sent Meme. |
| 5:37 |
The Father who sent Meme has Himselfhimself testified about Meme. You have not heard Hishis voice at any time, and you haven’t seen Hishis form. |
| 5:38 |
You don’t have Hishis word livingresiding in you, because you don’t believe the Oneone Hehe sent. |
| 5:39 |
You pore over the Scriptures because you think you have eternal life in them, and yet they testify about Meme. |
| 5:40 |
AndBut you are not willing to come to Meme so that you may have life. |
| 5:41 |
“I do not accept glory from menpeople, |
| 5:42 |
but I know you — that you have no love for God within you. |
| 5:43 |
I have come in Mymy Father’s name, and yet you don’t accept Meme. If someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him. |
| 5:44 |
How can you believe?, Whilesince acceptingyou accept glory from one another, youbut don’t seek the glory that comes from the only God.? |
| 5:46 |
For if you believed Moses, you would believe Meme, because he wrote about Meme. |
| 5:47 |
But if you don’t believe hiswhat writingshe wrote, how will you believe Mymy words?” |
| 6:2 |
AndA a huge crowd was following Himhim because they saw the signs that Hehe was performing by healing the sick. |
| 6:3 |
So Jesus went up a mountain and sat down there with Hishis disciples. |
| 6:5 |
Therefore,So when Jesus looked up and noticed a huge crowd coming toward Himhim, Hehe asked Philip, “Where will we buy bread so that these people can eat?” |
| 6:6 |
He asked this to test him, for Hehe Himselfhimself knew what Hehe was going to do. |
| 6:7 |
Philip answered him, “Two hundred denarii worth of bread wouldn’t be enough for each of them to have a little.” |
| 6:8 |
One of Hishis disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to Himhim, |
| 6:9 |
“There’s a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish — but what are they for so many?” |
| 6:10 |
Then Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” There was plenty of grass in that place,; so they sat down. The men numbered about 5,000five thousand. |
| 6:11 |
Then Jesus took the loaves, and after giving thanks Hehe distributed them to those who were seated — so also with the fish, as much as they wanted. |
| 6:12 |
When they were full, Hehe told Hishis disciples, “Collect the leftovers so that nothing is wasted.” |
| 6:13 |
So they collected them and filled 12twelve baskets with the pieces from the five barley loaves that were left over by those who had eaten. |
| 6:14 |
When the people saw the sign Hehe had done, they said, “This reallytruly is the Prophet who wasis to come into the world!”.” |
| 6:15 |
Therefore, when Jesus knewrealized that they were about to come and take Himhim by force to make Himhim king, Hehe withdrew again to the mountain by Himselfhimself. |
| 6:16 |
When evening came, Hishis disciples went down to the sea, |
| 6:18 |
ThenA a high wind arose, and the sea began to churn. |
| 6:20 |
But Hehe said to them, “It is I. Don’t be afraid!”.” |
| 6:21 |
Then they were willing to take Himhim on board, and at once the boat was at the shore where they were heading. |
| 6:22 |
The next day, the crowd that had stayed on the other side of the sea knewsaw there had been only one boat. They also knewsaw that Jesus had not boarded the boat with Hishis disciples, but that Hishis disciples had gone off alone. |
| 6:23 |
Some boats from Tiberias came near the place where they atehad eaten the bread after the Lord gavehad given thanks. |
| 6:24 |
When the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor Hishis disciples were there, they got into the boats and went to Capernaum looking for Jesus. |
| 6:25 |
When they found Himhim on the other side of the sea, they said to Himhim, “Rabbi, when did Youyou get here?” |
| 6:26 |
Jesus answered, “Truly I assuretell you:, Youyou are looking for Meme, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate the loaves and were filled. |
| 6:27 |
Don’t work for the food that perishes but for the food that lasts for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set Hishis seal of approval on Himhim.” |
| 6:29 |
Jesus replied, “This is the work of God — that you believe in the Oneone Hehe has sent.” |
| 6:30 |
“What sign, then, are Youyou going to do so that we may see and believe Youyou?” they asked. “What are Youyou going to perform? |
| 6:31 |
Our fathersancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, just as it is written: He gave them bread from heaven to eat.” |
| 6:32 |
Jesus said to them, “Truly I assuretell you:, Moses didn’t give you the bread from heaven, but Mymy Father gives you the realtrue bread from heaven. |
| 6:33 |
For the bread of God is the Oneone who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” |
| 6:34 |
Then they said, “Sir, give us this bread always!”.” |
| 6:35 |
“I am the bread of life,” Jesus told them. “No one who comes to Meme will ever be hungry, and no one who believes in Meme will ever be thirsty again. |
| 6:36 |
But as I told you, you’ve seen Meme, and yet you do not believe. |
| 6:37 |
Everyone the Father gives Meme will come to Meme, and the one who comes to Meme I will never cast out. |
| 6:38 |
For I have come down from heaven, not to do Mymy own will, but the will of Himhim who sent Meme. |
| 6:39 |
This is the will of Himhim who sent Meme: that I should lose none of those Hehe has given Meme but should raise them up on the last day. |
| 6:40 |
For this is the will of Mymy Father: that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Himhim maywill have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.” |
| 6:41 |
Therefore the Jews started complaininggrumbling about Himhim because Hehe said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” |
| 6:42 |
They were saying, “Isn’t this Jesus the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can Hehe now say, ‘I have come down from heaven’?” |
| 6:43 |
Jesus answered them, “Stop complaininggrumbling among yourselves. |
| 6:44 |
No one can come to Meme unless the Father who sent Meme draws him, and I will raise him up on the last day. |
| 6:45 |
It is written in the Prophets: And they will all be taught by God. Everyone who has listened to and learned from the Father comes to Meme — |
| 6:46 |
not that anyone has seen the Father except the Oneone who is from God. He has seen the Father. |
| 6:47 |
“Truly I assuretell you:, Anyoneanyone who believes has eternal life. |
| 6:49 |
Your fathersancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. |
| 6:51 |
I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread he will live forever. The bread that I will give for the life of the world is Mymy flesh.” |
| 6:52 |
At that, the Jews argued among themselves, “How can this man give us Hishis flesh to eat?” |
| 6:53 |
So Jesus said to them, “Truly I assuretell you:, Unlessunless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink Hishis blood, you do not have life in yourselves. |
| 6:54 |
AnyoneThe one who eats Mymy flesh and drinks Mymy blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day, |
| 6:55 |
because Mymy flesh is realtrue food and Mymy blood is realtrue drink. |
| 6:56 |
The one who eats Mymy flesh and drinks Mymy blood livesremains in Meme, and I in him. |
| 6:57 |
Just as the living Father sent Meme and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on Meme will live because of Meme. |
| 6:58 |
This is the bread that came down from heaven; it is not like the manna your fathersancestors ate — and they died. The one who eats this bread will live forever.” |
| 6:60 |
Therefore, when many of Hishis disciples heard this, they said, “This teaching is hard!. Who can accept it?” |
| 6:61 |
Jesus, knowing in Himselfhimself that Hishis disciples were complaininggrumbling about this, asked them, “Does this offend you? |
| 6:62 |
Then what if you were to observe the Son of Man ascending to where Hehe was before? |
| 6:63 |
The Spirit is the Oneone who gives life. The flesh doesn’t help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life. |
| 6:64 |
But there are some among you who don’t believe.” (For Jesus knew from the beginning those who woulddid not believe and the one who would betray Himhim.) |
| 6:65 |
He said, “This is why I told you that no one can come to Meme unless it is granted to him by the Father.” |
| 6:66 |
From that moment many of Hishis disciples turned back and no longer accompanied Himhim. |
| 6:67 |
ThereforeSo Jesus said to the Twelve, “You don’t want to go away too, do you?” |
| 6:68 |
Simon Peter answered, “Lord, whoto whom will we go to? You have the words of eternal life. |
| 6:69 |
We have come to believe and know that Youyou are the Holy One of God!”.” |
| 6:70 |
Jesus replied to them, “Didn’t I choose you, the Twelve? Yet one of you is thea Devil!”devil.” |
| 6:71 |
He was referring to Judas, Simon Iscariot’s son, one of the Twelve, because he was going to betray Himhim. |
| 7:1 |
After this, Jesus traveled in Galilee, since Hehe did not want to travel in Judea because the Jews were trying to kill Himhim. |
| 7:2 |
The Jewish Festival of TabernaclesShelters was near,. |
| 7:3 |
soSo Hishis brothers said to Himhim, “Leave here and go to Judea so Yourthat your disciples can see Youryour works that Youyou are doing. |
| 7:4 |
For no one does anything in secret while he’s seeking public recognition. If Youyou do these things, show Yourselfyourself to the world.” |
| 7:5 |
(For not even Hishis brothers believed in Himhim.) |
| 7:7 |
The world cannot hate you, but it does hate Meme because I testify about it — that its deedsworks are evil. |
| 7:8 |
Go up to the festival yourselves. I’m not going up to thethis festival yet, because Mymy time has not yet fully come.” |
| 7:9 |
After Hehe had said these things, Hehe stayed in Galilee. |
| 7:10 |
After Hishis brothers had gone up to the festival, then Hehe also went up, not openly but secretly. |
| 7:11 |
The Jews were looking for Himhim at the festival and saying, “Where is Hehe?” |
| 7:12 |
And there was a lot of discussionmurmuring about Himhim among the crowds. Some were saying, “He’s a good man.” Others were saying, “No, on the contrary, Hehe’s deceiving the people.” |
| 7:13 |
Still, nobody was talking publicly about Himhim becausefor theyfear fearedof the Jews. |
| 7:14 |
When the festival was already half over, Jesus went up into the temple complex and began to teach. |
| 7:15 |
Then the Jews were amazed and said, “How doesis Hethis knowman theso Scriptureslearned, since Hehe hasn’t been trained?” |
| 7:16 |
Jesus answered them, “My teaching isn’t Minemine but is from the Oneone who sent Meme. |
| 7:17 |
If anyone wants to do Hishis will, he will understandknow whether the teaching is from God or ifwhether I am speaking on Mymy own. |
| 7:18 |
The one who speaks foron himselfhis own seeks his own glory.; Butbut Hehe who seeks the glory of the Oneone who sent Himhim is true, and there is no unrighteousness in Himhim. |
| 7:19 |
Didn’t Moses give you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law!. Why doare you wanttrying to kill Meme?” |
| 7:20 |
“You have a demon!” the crowd responded. “Who wantsis trying to kill Youyou?” |
| 7:21 |
“I didperformed one work, and you are all amazed,” Jesus answered. |
| 7:22 |
“ConsiderThis this:is why Moses has given you circumcision — not that it comes from Moses but from the fathers — and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath. |
| 7:23 |
If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses won’t be broken, are you angry at Meme because I made a man entirely well on the Sabbath? |
| 7:25 |
Some of the people of Jerusalem were saying, “Isn’t this the man they wantare trying to kill? |
| 7:26 |
Yet, look!, Hehe’s speaking publicly and they’re saying nothing to Himhim. Can it be true that the authorities know Hehe is the Messiah? |
| 7:27 |
But we know where this man is from. When the Messiah comes, nobody will know where Hehe is from.” |
| 7:28 |
As Hehe was teaching in the temple complex, Jesus cried out, “You know Meme and you know where I am from. Yet I have not come on Mymy own, but the Oneone who sent Meme is true. You don’t know Himhim; |
| 7:29 |
I know Himhim because I am from Himhim, and Hehe sent Meme.” |
| 7:30 |
Then they tried to seize Himhim. Yet no one laid a hand on Himhim because Hishis hour had not yet come. |
| 7:31 |
However, many from the crowd believed in Himhim and said, “When the Messiah comes, Hehe won’t perform more signs than this man has done, will Hehe?” |
| 7:32 |
The Pharisees heard the crowd mutteringmurmuring these things about Himhim, and so the chief priests and the Pharisees sent templeservants police to arrest Himhim. |
| 7:33 |
Then Jesus said, “I am only with you for a short time. Then I’m going to the Oneone who sent Meme. |
| 7:34 |
You will look for Meme, but you will not find Meme; and where I am, you cannot come.” |
| 7:35 |
Then the Jews said to one another, “Where does Hehe intend to go sothat we won’t find Himhim? He doesn’t intend to go to the DispersionJewish people dispersed among the Greeks and teach the Greeks, does Hehe? |
| 7:36 |
What is this remark Hehe made: ‘You will look for Meme, and you will not find Meme; and where I am, you cannot come’?” |
| 7:37 |
On the last and most important day of the festival, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone is thirsty, helet shouldhim come to Meme and drink!. |
| 7:38 |
The one who believes in Meme, as the Scripture has said, will have streams of living water flow from deep within him.” |
| 7:39 |
He said this about the Spirit. Those who believed in Jesus were going to receive the Spirit, for the Spirit had not yet been receivedgiven because Jesus had not yet been glorified. |
| 7:40 |
When some from the crowd heard these words, they said, “This reallytruly is the Prophet!”.” |
| 7:41 |
Others said, “This is the Messiah!”.” But some said, “Surely the Messiah doesn’t come from Galilee, does Hehe? |
| 7:42 |
Doesn’t the Scripture say that the Messiah comes from David’s offspring and from the town of Bethlehem, where David once lived?” |
| 7:43 |
So athe divisioncrowd occurredwas amongdivided the crowd because of Himhim. |
| 7:44 |
Some of them wanted to seize Himhim, but no one laid hands on Himhim. |
| 7:45 |
Then the templeservants police came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who asked them, “Why havendidn’t you broughtbring Himhim?” |
| 7:46 |
The policeservants answered, “No man ever spoke like this!” |
| 7:47 |
Then the Pharisees responded to them:, “Are you fooled too? |
| 7:48 |
Have any of the rulers or Pharisees believed in Himhim? |
| 7:49 |
But this crowd, which doesn’t know the law, is accursed!”.” |
| 7:50 |
Nicodemus — the one who came to Himhim previously, beingand who was one of them — said to them, |
| 7:52 |
“You aren’t from Galilee too, are you?” they replied. “Investigate and you will see that no prophet arises from Galilee.” [The earliest mss do not include 7:53–8:11.] [ |
| 7:53 |
[SoThen each one went to his house. |
| 8:2 |
At dawn Hehe went to the temple complex again, and all the people were coming to Himhim. He sat down and began to teach them. |
| 8:4 |
“Teacher,” they said to Himhim, “this woman was caught in the act of committing adultery. |
| 8:5 |
In the law Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do Youyou say?” |
| 8:6 |
They asked this to trap Himhim, in order that they might have evidence to accuse Himhim. Jesus stooped down and started writing on the ground with Hishis finger. |
| 8:7 |
When they persisted in questioning Himhim, Hehe stood up and said to them, “The one without sin among you should be the first to throw a stone at her.” |
| 8:8 |
Then Hehe stooped down again and continued writing on the ground. |
| 8:9 |
When they heard this, they left one by one, starting with the older men. Only Hehe was left, with the woman in the center. |
| 8:10 |
When Jesus stood up, Hehe said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” |
| 8:12 |
Then Jesus spoke to them again: “I am the light of the world. Anyone who follows Meme will never walk in the darkness but will have the light of life.” |
| 8:13 |
So the Pharisees said to Himhim, “You are testifying about Yourselfyourself. Your testimony is not valid.” |
| 8:14 |
“Even if I testify about Myselfmyself,” Jesus replied, “My testimony is validtrue, because I know where I came from and where I’m going. But you don’t know where I come from or where I’m going. |
| 8:16 |
And if I do judge, Mymy judgment is true, because Iit amis not I alone who judge, but I and the Father who sent Me judge togetherme. |
| 8:17 |
Even in your law it is written that the witnesstestimony of two menwitnesses is validtrue. |
| 8:18 |
I am the Oneone who testifies about Myselfmyself, and the Father who sent Meme testifies about Meme.” |
| 8:19 |
Then they asked Himhim, “Where is Youryour Father?” “You know neither Meme nor Mymy Father,” Jesus answered. “If you knew Meme, you would also know Mymy Father.” |
| 8:20 |
He spoke these words by the treasury, while teaching in the temple complex. But no one seized Himhim, because Hishis hour had not yet come. |
| 8:21 |
Then Hehe said to them again, “I’m going away; you will look for Meme, and you will die in your sin. Where I’m going, you cannot come.” |
| 8:22 |
So the Jews said again, “He won’t kill Himselfhimself, will Hehe, since Hehe says, ‘Where I’m going, you cannot come’?” |
| 8:23 |
“You are from below,” Hehe told them, “I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. |
| 8:24 |
Therefore I told you that you will die in your sins. For if you do not believe that I am Hehe, you will die in your sins.” |
| 8:25 |
“Who are Youyou?” they questioned. “PreciselyExactly what I’ve been telling you from the very beginning,” Jesus told them. |
| 8:26 |
“I have many things to say and to judge about you, but the Oneone who sent Meme is true, and what I have heard from Himhim — these things I tell the world.” |
| 8:27 |
They did not know Hehe was speaking to them about the Father. |
| 8:28 |
So Jesus said to them, “When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am Hehe, and that I do nothing on Mymy own. But just as the Father taught Meme, I say these things. |
| 8:29 |
The Oneone who sent Meme is with Meme. He has not left Meme alone, because I always do what pleases Himhim.” |
| 8:30 |
As Hehe was saying these things, many believed in Himhim. |
| 8:31 |
SoThen Jesus said to the Jews who had believed Himhim, “If you continue in Mymy word, you really are Mymy disciples. |
| 8:33 |
“We are descendants of Abraham,” they answered Himhim, “and we have never been enslaved to anyone. How can Youyou say, ‘You will become free’?” |
| 8:34 |
Jesus responded, “Truly I assuretell you:, Everyoneeveryone who commits sin is a slave of sin. |
| 8:36 |
Therefore,So if the Son sets you free, you really will be free. |
| 8:37 |
I know you are descendants of Abraham, but you are trying to kill Meme because Mymy word ishas notno welcomeplace among you. |
| 8:38 |
I speak what I have seen in the presence of the Father; thereforeso then, you do what you have heard from your father.” |
| 8:39 |
“Our father is Abraham!”,” they replied. “If you were Abraham’s children,” Jesus told them, “you would do what Abraham did. |
| 8:40 |
But now you are trying to kill Meme, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham did not do this!. |
| 8:41 |
You’re doing what your father does.” “We weren’t born of sexual immorality,” they said. “We have one Father — God.” |
| 8:42 |
Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love Meme, because I came from God and I am here. For I didn’t come on Mymy own, but Hehe sent Meme. |
| 8:43 |
Why don’t you understand what I say? Because you cannot listen to Mymy word. |
| 8:44 |
You are of your father the Devildevil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning and hasdoes not stoodstand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he tells a lie, he speaks from his own nature, because he is a liar and the father of liarslies. |
| 8:45 |
Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe Meme. |
| 8:46 |
Who among you can convict Meme of sin? If I tellam telling the truth, why don’t you believe Meme? |
| 8:48 |
The Jews responded to Himhim, “Aren’t we right in saying that Youyou’re a Samaritan and have a demon?” |
| 8:49 |
“I do not have a demon,” Jesus answered. “On the contrary, I honor Mymy Father and you dishonor Meme. |
| 8:50 |
I do not seek Mymy own glory; thethere Oneis one who seeks it alsoand judges. |
| 8:51 |
Truly I assuretell you:, Ifif anyone keeps Mymy word, he will never see death—ever!”.” |
| 8:52 |
Then the Jews said, “Now we know Youyou have a demon. Abraham died and so did the prophets. You say, ‘If anyone keeps Mymy word, he will never taste death—ever!’.’ |
| 8:53 |
Are Youyou greater than our father Abraham who died? EvenAnd the prophets died. Who do Youyou pretendclaim to be?” |
| 8:54 |
“If I glorify Myselfmyself,” Jesus answered, “Mymy glory is nothing. My Father — about whom you say about Him, ‘He is our God’—He’ — he is the Oneone who glorifies Meme. |
| 8:55 |
You’ve neverdo knownnot Himknow him, but I know Himhim. If I were to say I don’t know Himhim, I would be a liar like you. But I do know Himhim, and I keep Hishis word. |
| 8:56 |
Your father Abraham wasrejoiced overjoyedto that he would see Mymy day; he saw it and rejoicedwas glad.” |
| 8:57 |
The Jews replied, “You aren’t 50fifty years old yet, and Youyou’ve seen Abraham?” |
| 8:58 |
Jesus said to them, “Truly I assuretell you:, Beforebefore Abraham was, I am.” |
| 8:59 |
AtSo that, they picked up stones to throw at Himhim. But Jesus was hidden and went out of the temple complex. |
| 9:1 |
As Hehe was passing by, Hehe saw a man blind from birth. |
| 9:2 |
His disciples questionedasked Him:him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” |
| 9:3 |
“Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” Jesus answered. “This came about so that God’s works might be displayed in him. |
| 9:4 |
We must do the works of Himhim who sent Meme while it is day. Night is coming when no one can work. |
| 9:6 |
After Hehe said these things Hehe spit on the ground, made some mud from the saliva, and spread the mud on his eyes. |
| 9:7 |
“Go,” Hehe told him, “wash in the pool of Siloam” (which means “Sent”). So he left, washed, and came back seeing. |
| 9:8 |
His neighbors and those who formerly had seen him before as a beggar said, “Isn’t this the manone who satused to sit begging?” |
| 9:9 |
Some said, “He’s the one.” “No,”Others others were saying, “No, but he looks like him.” He kept saying, “I’m the one!”.” |
| 9:10 |
ThereforeSo they asked him, “Then how were your eyes opened?” |
| 9:12 |
“Where is Hehe?” they asked. “I don’t know,” he said. |
| 9:15 |
SoThen again the Pharisees asked him again how he received his sight. “He put mud on my eyes,” he told them. “I washed and I can see.” |
| 9:16 |
ThereforeSome some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, forbecause Hehe doesn’t keep the Sabbath!”.” But others were saying, “How can a sinful man perform such signs?” And there was a division among them. |
| 9:17 |
Again they asked the blind man, “What do you say about Himhim, since Hehe opened your eyes?” “He’s a prophet,” he said. |
| 9:18 |
The Jews did not believe this about him — that he was blind and received sight — until they summoned the parents of the one who had received his sight. |
| 9:22 |
His parents said these things because they were afraid of the Jews, since the Jews had already agreed that if anyone confessed Himhim as the Messiah, he would be banned from the synagogue. |
| 9:24 |
So a second time they summoned the man who had been blind and told him, “Give glory to God. We know that this man is a sinner!”.” |
| 9:25 |
He answered, “Whether or not Hehe’s a sinner, I don’t know. One thing I do know: I was blind, and now I can see!” |
| 9:26 |
Then they asked him, “What did Hehe do to you? How did Hehe open your eyes?” |
| 9:27 |
“I already told you,” he said, “and you didn’t listen. Why do you want to hear it again? You don’t want to become Hishis disciples too, do you?” |
| 9:28 |
They ridiculed him: “You’re that man’s disciple, but we’re Moses’s disciples. |
| 9:29 |
We know that God has spoken to Moses. But this man — we don’t know where Hehe’s from!”.” |
| 9:30 |
“This is an amazing thing,”!” the man told them. “You don’t know where Hehe is from, and yet Hehe opened my eyes!. |
| 9:31 |
We know that God doesn’t listen to sinners, but if anyone is God-fearing and does Hishis will, Hehe listens to him. |
| 9:33 |
If this man were not from God, Hehe wouldn’t be able to do anything.” |
| 9:35 |
When Jesus heard that they had thrown the man out, Heand when he found him, andhe asked, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?” |
| 9:36 |
“Who is Hehe, Sir, that I may believe in Himhim?” he asked. |
| 9:37 |
Jesus answered, “You have seen Himhim; in fact, Hehe is the Oneone speaking with you.” |
| 9:38 |
“I believe, Lord!” he said, and he worshiped Himhim. |
| 9:40 |
Some of the Pharisees who were with Himhim heard these things and asked Himhim, “We aren’t blind too, are we?” |
| 9:41 |
“If you were blind,” Jesus told them, “you wouldn’t have sin. But now that you say, ‘We see’—,’ your sin remains. |
| 10:1 |
“Truly I assuretell you:, Anyoneanyone who doesn’t enter the sheep pen by the doorgate but climbs in some other way, is a thief and a robber. |
| 10:2 |
The one who enters by the doorgate is the shepherd of the sheep. |
| 10:3 |
The doorkeepergatekeeper opens it for him, and the sheep hear his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. |
| 10:4 |
When he has brought all his own outside, he goes ahead of them. The sheep follow him because they recognizeknow his voice. |
| 10:5 |
They will never follow a stranger; instead they will run away from him, because they don’t recognizeknow the voice of strangers.” |
| 10:6 |
Jesus gave them this illustrationfigure of speech, but they did not understand what Hehe was telling them. |
| 10:7 |
So Jesus said again, “Truly I assuretell you:, I am the doorgate offor the sheep. |
| 10:8 |
All who came before Meme are thieves and robbers, but the sheep didn’t listen to them. |
| 10:9 |
I am the doorgate. If anyone enters by Meme, he will be saved and will come in and go out and find pasture. |
| 10:10 |
A thief comes only to steal and to kill and to destroy. I have come so that they may have life and have it in abundance. |
| 10:11 |
“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. |
| 10:12 |
The hired manhand, since he is not the shepherd and doesn’t own the sheep, leaves them and runs away when he sees a wolf coming. The wolf then snatches and scatters them. |
| 10:13 |
This happens because he is a hired manhand and doesn’t care about the sheep. |
| 10:14 |
“I am the good shepherd. I know Mymy own sheep, and theymy own know Meme, |
| 10:15 |
just as the Father knows Meme, and I know the Father. I lay down Mymy life for the sheep. |
| 10:16 |
But I have other sheep that are not offrom this foldsheep pen; I must bring them also, and they will listen to Mymy voice. Then there will be one flock, one shepherd. |
| 10:17 |
This is why the Father loves Meme, because I amlay laying down Mymy life so that I may take it up again. |
| 10:18 |
No one takes it from Meme, but I lay it down on Mymy own. I have the right to lay it down, and I have the right to take it up again. I have received this command from Mymy Father.” |
| 10:19 |
Again athe divisionJews tookwere placedivided among the Jews because of these words. |
| 10:20 |
Many of them were saying, “He has a demon and Hehe’s crazy!. Why do you listen to Himhim?” |
| 10:21 |
Others were saying, “These aren’t the words of someone who is demon-possessed. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?” |
| 10:23 |
Jesus was walking in the temple complex in Solomon’s Colonnade. |
| 10:24 |
ThenThe the Jews surrounded Himhim and asked, “How long are Youyou going to keep us in suspense? If Youyou are the Messiah, tell us plainly.” |
| 10:25 |
“I did tell you and you don’t believe,” Jesus answered them. “The works that I do in Mymy Father’s name testify about Meme. |
| 10:26 |
But you don’t believe because you are not Myof my sheep. |
| 10:27 |
My sheep hear Mymy voice, I know them, and they follow Meme. |
| 10:28 |
I give them eternal life, and they will never perish—ever!. No one will snatch them out of Mymy hand. |
| 10:29 |
My Father, who has given them to Meme, is greater than all. No one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. |
| 10:30 |
TheI Father and Ithe Father are one.” |
| 10:31 |
Again the Jews picked up rocks to stone Himhim. |
| 10:32 |
Jesus replied, “I have shown you many good works from the Father. WhichFor which of these works are you stoning Meme?” for?” |
| 10:33 |
“We aren’t stoning Youyou for a good work,” the Jews answered, “but for blasphemy, because Youyou — being a man — make Yourselfyourself God.” |
| 10:34 |
Jesus answered them, “Isn’t it written in your scripturelaw, I said, you are gods? |
| 10:35 |
If Hehe called those to whom the word of God came to ‘gods’—’ — and the Scripture cannot be broken — |
| 10:36 |
do you say, ‘You are blaspheming’ to the Oneone the Father set apart and sent into the world, because I said: I am the Son of God? |
| 10:37 |
If I am not doing Mymy Father’s works, don’t believe Meme. |
| 10:38 |
But if I am doing them and you don’t believe Meme, believe the works. This way you will know and understand that the Father is in Meme and I in the Father.” |
| 10:39 |
Then they were trying again to seize Himhim, yetbut Hehe eludedescaped their grasp. |
| 10:40 |
So Hehe departed again across the Jordan to the place where John had been baptizing earlier, and Hehe remained there. |
| 10:41 |
Many came to Himhim and said, “John never did a sign, but everything John said about this man was true.” |
| 10:42 |
And many believed in Himhim there. |
| 11:1 |
Now a man was sick, Lazarus, from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. |
| 11:2 |
Mary was the one who anointed the Lord with fragrantperfume oil and wiped Hishis feet with her hair, and it was her brother Lazarus who was sick. |
| 11:3 |
So the sisters sent a message to Himhim: “Lord, the one Youyou love is sick.” |
| 11:4 |
When Jesus heard it, Hehe said, “This sickness will not end in death but is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.” |
| 11:6 |
So when Hehe heard that he was sick, Hehe stayed two more days in the place where Hehe was. |
| 11:7 |
Then after that, Hehe said to the disciples, “Let’s go to Judea again.” |
| 11:8 |
“Rabbi,” the disciples told Himhim, “just now the Jews tried to stone Youyou, and Youyou’re going there again?” |
| 11:9 |
“Aren’t there 12twelve hours in a day?” Jesus answered. “If anyone walks during the day, he doesn’t stumble, because he sees the light of this world. |
| 11:10 |
IfBut if anyone walks during the night, he does stumble, because the light is not in him.” |
| 11:11 |
He said this, and then Hehe told them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I’m on Mymy way to wake him up.” |
| 11:12 |
Then the disciples said to Himhim, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will get well.” |
| 11:13 |
Jesus, however, was speaking about his death, but they thought Hehe was speaking about natural sleep. |
| 11:16 |
Then Thomas (called “Twin”) said to his fellow disciples, “Let’s go too so that we may die with Himhim.” |
| 11:17 |
When Jesus arrived, Hehe found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days. |
| 11:18 |
Bethany was near Jerusalem (aboutless than two miles away). |
| 11:20 |
As soon as Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went to meet Him.him, Butbut Mary remained seated in the house. |
| 11:21 |
Then Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if Youyou had been here, my brother wouldn’t have died. |
| 11:22 |
Yet even now I know that whatever Youyou ask from God, God will give Youyou.” |
| 11:23 |
“Your brother will rise again,” Jesus told her. |
| 11:24 |
Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.” |
| 11:25 |
Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in Meme, even if he dies, will live. |
| 11:26 |
Everyone who lives and believes in Meme will never die—ever. Do you believe this?” |
| 11:27 |
“Yes, Lord,” she told Himhim, “I believe Youyou are the Messiah, the Son of God, who comes into the world.” |
| 11:29 |
As soon as sheMary heard this, she got up quickly and went to Himhim. |
| 11:30 |
Jesus had not yet come into the village but was still in the place where Martha had met Himhim. |
| 11:31 |
The Jews who were with her in the house consoling her saw that Mary got up quickly and went out. SoThey they followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to cry there. |
| 11:32 |
WhenAs soon as Mary came to where Jesus was and saw Himhim, she fell at Hishis feet and told Himhim, “Lord, if Youyou had been here, my brother wouldwouldn’t not have died!” |
| 11:33 |
When Jesus saw her crying, and the Jews who had come with her crying, Hehe was angrydeeply moved in Hishis spirit and deeply movedtroubled. |
| 11:34 |
“Where have you put him?” Hehe asked. “Lord,” they told Himhim, “come and see.” |
| 11:36 |
So the Jews said, “See how Hehe loved him!” |
| 11:37 |
But some of them said, “Couldn’t Hehe who opened the blind man’s eyes also have kept this man from dying?” |
| 11:38 |
Then Jesus, angrydeeply inmoved Himself again, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it. |
| 11:39 |
“Remove the stone,” Jesus said. Martha, the dead man’s sister, told Himhim, “Lord, he’sthere is already decaying.a It’sstench because he has been dead four days.” |
| 11:41 |
So they removed the stone. Then Jesus raised Hishis eyes and said, “Father, I thank Youyou that Youyou heard Meme. |
| 11:42 |
I know that Youyou always hear Meme, but because of the crowd standing here I said this, so that they may believe Youyou sent Meme.” |
| 11:43 |
After Hehe said this, Hehe shouted with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” |
| 11:44 |
The dead man came out bound hand and foot with linen strips and with his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, “LooseUnwrap him and let him go.” |
| 11:45 |
Therefore, many of the Jews who came to Mary and saw what Hehe did believed in Himhim. |
| 11:47 |
So the chief priests and the Pharisees convened the Sanhedrin and saidwere saying, “What are we going to do since this man doesis doing many signs? |
| 11:48 |
If we let Himhim continuego inon like this way, everyone will believe in Him!him, Thenand the Romans will come and removetake away both our place and our nation.” |
| 11:53 |
So from that day on they plotted to kill Himhim. |
| 11:54 |
Therefore Jesus therefore no longer walked openly among the Jews but departed from there to the countryside near the wilderness, to a town called Ephraim., Andand Hehe stayed there with the disciples. |
| 11:55 |
TheNow the Jewish Passover was near, and many went up to Jerusalem from the country to purify themselves before the Passover. |
| 11:56 |
They were looking for Jesus and asking one another as they stood in the temple, complex: “What do you think? He won’t come to the festival, will Hehe?” |
| 11:57 |
The chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where Hehe was, he should report it so that they could arrest Himhim. |
| 12:2 |
So they gave a dinner for Himhim there; Martha was serving them, and Lazarus was one of those reclining at the table with Himhim. |
| 12:3 |
Then Mary took a pound of fragrantperfume, oil—pure and expensive nard—, anointed Jesus’s feet, and wiped Hishis feet with her hair. So the house was filled with the fragrance of the oilperfume. |
| 12:4 |
Then one of Hishis disciples, Judas Iscariot (who was about to betray Himhim), said, |
| 12:5 |
“Why wasn’t this fragrantperfume oil sold for 300three hundred denarii and given to the poor?” |
| 12:7 |
Jesus answered, “Leave her alone; she has kept it for the day of Mymy burial. |
| 12:8 |
For you always have the poor with you, but you do not always have Meme.” |
| 12:9 |
Then a large crowd of the Jews learned Hehe was there. They came not only because of Jesus, but also to see Lazarus, the one Hehe had raised from the dead. |
| 12:10 |
ThereforeBut the chief priests had decided to kill Lazarus also, |
| 12:13 |
they took palm branches and went out to meet Himhim. They kept shouting: “Hosanna! HeBlessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord is— the blessed One—the King of Israel!” |
| 12:15 |
Fear noDo morenot be afraid, Daughter Zion. Look, your King is coming, sitting on a donkey’s colt. |
| 12:16 |
His disciples did not understand these things at first. However, when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written about Himhim and that they had done these things to Himhim. |
| 12:17 |
Meanwhile, the crowd, which had been with Himhim when Hehe called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead, continued to testify. |
| 12:18 |
This is also why the crowd met Himhim, because they heard Hehe had done this sign. |
| 12:19 |
Then the Pharisees said to one another, “You see? You’ve accomplished nothing. Look—, the world has gone after Himhim!” |
| 12:24 |
“Truly I assuretell you:, Unlessunless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains by itself. But if it dies, it produces amuch large cropfruit. |
| 12:26 |
If anyone serves Meme, he must follow Meme. Where I am, there Mymy servant also will be. If anyone serves Meme, the Father will honor him. |
| 12:27 |
“Now Mymy soul is troubled. What should I say — Father, save Meme from this hour? But that is why I came to this hour. |
| 12:28 |
Father, glorify Youryour name!”.” Then a voice came from heaven: “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again!”.” |
| 12:29 |
The crowd standing there heard it and said it was thunder. Others said, that“An an angel hadhas spoken to Him.him.” |
| 12:30 |
Jesus responded, “This voice came, not for Meme, but for you. |
| 12:32 |
As for Meme, if I am lifted up from the earth I will draw all people to Myselfmyself.” |
| 12:33 |
He said this to signifyindicate what kind of death Hehe was about to die. |
| 12:34 |
Then the crowd replied to Himhim, “We have heard from the scripturelaw that the Messiah will remain forever. So how can Youyou say, ‘The Son of Man must be lifted up’? Who is this Son of Man?” |
| 12:36 |
While you have the light, believe in the light so that you may become sonschildren of light.” Jesus said this, then went away and hid from them. |
| 12:37 |
Even though Hehe had performed so many signs in their presence, they did not believe in Himhim. |
| 12:38 |
ButThis this was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet, who said: Lord, who has believed our message? And whoto whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? to? |
| 12:40 |
He has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts, so that they would not see with their eyes or understand with their hearts, and be convertedturn, and I would heal them. |
| 12:41 |
Isaiah said these things because he saw Hishis glory and spoke about Himhim. |
| 12:42 |
Nevertheless, many did believe in Himhim even among the rulers, but because of the Pharisees they did not confess Himhim, so that they would not be banned from the synagogue. |
| 12:43 |
For they loved human praise from men more than praise from God. |
| 12:44 |
Then Jesus cried out, “The one who believes in Meme believes not in Meme, but in Himhim who sent Meme. |
| 12:45 |
And the one who sees Meme sees Himhim who sent Meme. |
| 12:46 |
I have come as a light into the world, so that everyone who believes in Meme would not remain in darkness. |
| 12:47 |
If anyone hears Mymy words and doesn’t keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world. |
| 12:48 |
The one who rejects Meme and doesn’t acceptreceive Mymy sayings has this as his judge: The word I have spoken will judge him on the last day. |
| 12:49 |
For I have not spoken on Mymy own, but the Father Himselfhimself who sent Meme has given Meme a command as to what I should say andeverything what I shouldhave speaksaid. |
| 12:50 |
I know that Hishis command is eternal life. So the things that I speak, I speak just as the Father has told Meme.” |
| 13:1 |
Before the Passover Festival, Jesus knew that Hishis hour had come to depart from this world to the Father. Having loved Hishis own who were in the world, Hehe loved them to the end. |
| 13:2 |
Now bywhen theit was time offor supper, the Devildevil had already put it into the heart of Judas, Simon Iscariot’s son, to betray Himhim. |
| 13:3 |
Jesus knew that the Father had given everything into Hishis hands, that Hehe had come from God, and that Hehe was going back to God. |
| 13:4 |
So Hehe got up from supper, laid aside Hishis robeouter clothing, took a towel, and tied it around Himselfhimself. |
| 13:5 |
Next, Hehe poured water into a basin and began to wash Hishis disciples’ feet and to dry them with the towel tied around Himhim. |
| 13:6 |
He came to Simon Peter, who asked Himhim, “Lord, are Youyou going to wash my feet?” |
| 13:7 |
Jesus answered him, “What I’m doing you don’t understandrealize now, but afterward you will knowunderstand.” |
| 13:8 |
“You will never wash my feet—ever!”,” Peter said. Jesus replied, “If I don’t wash you, you have no part with Meme.” |
| 13:9 |
Simon Peter said to Himhim, “Lord, not only my feet, but also my hands and my head.” |
| 13:10 |
“One who has bathed,” Jesus told him, “doesn’t need to wash anything except his feet, but he is completely clean. You are clean, but not all of you.” |
| 13:11 |
For Hehe knew who would betray Himhim. This is why Hehe said, “YouNot areall notof allyou are clean.” |
| 13:12 |
When Jesus had washed their feet and put on Hishis robeouter clothing, Hehe reclined again and said to them, “Do you know what I have done for you? |
| 13:13 |
You call Meme Teacher and Lord. This— isand wellyou saidare speaking rightly, forsince that is what I am. |
| 13:15 |
For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done for you. |
| 13:16 |
“Truly I assuretell you:, Aa slaveservant is not greater than his master, and a messenger is not greater than the one who sent him. |
| 13:18 |
“I’m not speaking about all of you; I know those I have chosen. But the Scripture must be fulfilled: The one who eats Mymy bread has raised his heel against Meme. |
| 13:19 |
“I am telling you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe that I am Hehe. |
| 13:20 |
Truly I assuretell you:, Whoeverwhoever receives anyone I send receives Meme, and the one who receives Meme receives Himhim who sent Meme.” |
| 13:21 |
When Jesus had said this, Hehe was troubled in Hishis spirit and testified, “Truly I assuretell you:, Oneone of you will betray Me!”me.” |
| 13:22 |
The disciples started looking at one another — uncertain which one Hehe was speaking about. |
| 13:23 |
One of Hishis disciples, the one Jesus loved, was reclining close beside Jesus. |
| 13:24 |
Simon Peter motioned to him to find out who it was Hehe was talking about. |
| 13:25 |
So he leaned back against Jesus and asked Himhim, “Lord, who is it?” |
| 13:26 |
Jesus replied, “He’s the one I give the piece of bread to after I have dipped it.” When Hehe had dipped the bread, Hehe gave it to Judas, Simon Iscariot’s son. |
| 13:27 |
After Judas ate the piece of bread, Satan entered him. ThereforeSo Jesus told him, “What you’re doing, do quickly.” |
| 13:28 |
None of those reclining at the table knew why Hehe toldsaid this to him this. |
| 13:30 |
After receiving the piece of bread, he wentimmediately out immediatelyleft. And it was night. |
| 13:31 |
When he had gone outleft, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in Himhim. |
| 13:32 |
If God is glorified in Himhim, God will also glorify Himhim in Himselfhimself and will glorify Himhim at once. |
| 13:33 |
“ChildrenLittle children, I am with you a little while longer. You will look for Meme, and just as I told the Jews, so now I tell you, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come,’.’ so now I tell you. |
| 13:34 |
“I give you a new command: Love one another. Just as I have loved you, you mustare also to love one another. |
| 13:35 |
By this alleveryone people will know that you are Mymy disciples, if you have love for one another.” |
| 13:36 |
“Lord,” Simon Peter said to Himhim, “where are Youyou going?” Jesus answered, “Where I am going you cannot follow Meme now, but you will follow later.” |
| 13:37 |
“Lord,” Peter asked, “why can’t I follow Youyou now? I will lay down my life for You!”you.” |
| 13:38 |
Jesus replied, “Will you lay down your life for Meme? Truly I assuretell you:, Aa rooster will not crow until you have denied Meme three times. |
| 14:1 |
“YourDon’t heartlet mustyour notheart be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in Meme. |
| 14:2 |
In Mymy Father’s house are many dwellingrooms. places; If ifit were not so, would I would have told you. that I am going away to prepare a place for you.? |
| 14:3 |
If I go away and prepare a place for you, I will come backagain and receivetake you to Myselfmyself, so that where I am you may be also. |
| 14:5 |
“Lord,” Thomas said, “we don’t know where Youyou’re going. How can we know the way?” |
| 14:6 |
Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Meme. |
| 14:7 |
“If you know Meme, you will also know Mymy Father. From now on you do know Himhim and have seen Himhim.” |
| 14:9 |
Jesus said to him, “Have I been among you all this time withoutand youryou knowingdo Menot know me, Philip? The one who has seen Meme has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? |
| 14:10 |
Don’t you believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in Meme? The words I speak to you I do not speak on Mymy own. The Father who lives in Meme does Hishis works. |
| 14:11 |
Believe Meme that I am in the Father and the Father is in Meme. Otherwise, believe because of the works themselves. |
| 14:12 |
“Truly I assuretell you:, Thethe one who believes in Meme will also do the works that I do. And he will do even greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. |
| 14:13 |
Whatever you ask in Mymy name, I will do it so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. |
| 14:14 |
If you ask Meme anything in Mymy name, I will do it. |
| 14:15 |
“If you love Meme, you will keep Mymy commands. |
| 14:16 |
And I will ask the Father, and Hehe will give you another Counselor to be with you forever. |
| 14:17 |
He is the Spirit of truth. The world is unable to receive Himhim because it doesn’t see Himhim or know Himhim. But you do know Himhim, because Hehe remains with you and will be in you. |
| 14:18 |
“I will not leave you as orphans; I am coming to you. |
| 14:19 |
“In a little while the world will seeno Melonger nosee longerme, but you will see Meme. Because I live, you will live too. |
| 14:20 |
InOn that day you will know that I am in Mymy Father, you are in Meme, and I am in you. |
| 14:21 |
The one who has Mymy commands and keeps them is the one who loves Meme. And the one who loves Meme will be loved by Mymy Father. I also will love him and will reveal Myselfmyself to him.” |
| 14:22 |
Judas (not Iscariot) said to Himhim, “Lord, how is it Youyou’re going to reveal Yourselfyourself to us and not to the world?” |
| 14:23 |
Jesus answered, “If anyone loves Meme, he will keep Mymy word. My Father will love him, and Wewe will come to him and make Ourour home with him. |
| 14:24 |
The one who doesn’t love Meme will not keep Mymy words. The word that you hear is not Minemine but is from the Father who sent Meme. |
| 14:25 |
“I have spoken these things to you while I remain with you. |
| 14:26 |
But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit—, whom the Father will send Him in Mymy name—, will teach you all things and remind you of everything I have told you. |
| 14:27 |
“Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. YourDon’t heartlet mustyour notheart be troubled or fearful. |
| 14:28 |
You have heard Meme tell you, ‘I am going away and I am coming to you.’ If you loved Meme, you would haverejoice rejoiced that I am going to the Father, because the Father is greater than I. |
| 14:30 |
I will not talk with you much longer, because the ruler of the world is coming. He has no power over Meme. |
| 14:31 |
On the contrary, I am going away so that the world may know that I love the Father., JustI do as the Father commanded Me, so I dome. “Get up; let’s leave this place. |
| 15:1 |
“I am the true vine, and Mymy Father is the vineyard keepergardener. |
| 15:2 |
Every branch in Meme that does not produce fruit Hehe removes, and Hehe prunes every branch that produces fruit so that it will produce more fruit. |
| 15:4 |
Remain in Meme, and I in you. Just as a branch is unable to produce fruit by itself unless it remains on the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in Meme. |
| 15:5 |
“I am the vine; you are the branches. The one who remains in Meme and I in him produces much fruit, because you can do nothing without Meme. |
| 15:6 |
If anyone does not remain in Meme, he is thrown aside like a branch and he withers. They gather them, throw them into the fire, and they are burned. |
| 15:7 |
If you remain in Meme and Mymy words remain in you, ask whatever you want and it will be done for you. |
| 15:8 |
My Father is glorified by this: that you produce much fruit and prove to be Mymy disciples. |
| 15:9 |
“As the Father has loved Meme, I have also loved you. Remain in Mymy love. |
| 15:10 |
If you keep Mymy commands you will remain in Mymy love, just as I have kept Mymy Father’s commands and remain in Hishis love. |
| 15:11 |
“I have spokentold you these things to you so that Mymy joy may be in you and your joy may be complete. |
| 15:12 |
“This is Mymy command: Love one another as I have loved you. |
| 15:13 |
No one has greater love than this,: thatto someone would lay down his life for his friends. |
| 15:14 |
You are Mymy friends if you do what I command you. |
| 15:15 |
I do not call you slavesservants anymore, because a slaveservant doesn’t know what his master is doing. I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything I have heard from Mymy Father. |
| 15:16 |
You did not choose Meme, but I chose you. I appointed you thatto you should go out and produce fruit and that your fruit should remain, so that whatever you ask the Father in Mymy name, Hehe will give you. |
| 15:17 |
“This is what I command you: Love one another. |
| 15:18 |
“If the world hates you, understand that it hated Meme before it hated you. |
| 15:20 |
Remember the word I spoke to you: ‘A slaveservant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Meme, they will also persecute you. If they kept Mymy word, they will also keep yours. |
| 15:21 |
But they will do all these things to you on account of Mymy name, because they don’t know the Oneone who sent Meme. |
| 15:22 |
If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not havebe guilty of sin. Now they have no excuse for their sin. |
| 15:23 |
The one who hates Meme also hates Mymy Father. |
| 15:24 |
If I had not done the works among them that no one else has done, they would not havebe guilty of sin. Now they have seen and hated both Meme and Mymy Father. |
| 15:25 |
But this happened so that the statement written in their scripturelaw might be fulfilled: They hated Meme for no reason. |
| 15:26 |
“When the Counselor comes, the Oneone I will send to you from the Father — the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father —He he will testify about Meme. |
| 15:27 |
You also will testify, because you have been with Meme from the beginning. |
| 16:1 |
“I have told you these things to keep you from stumbling. |
| 16:3 |
They will do these things because they haven’t known the Father or Meme. |
| 16:4 |
But I have told you these things so that when their time comes you maywill remember I told them to you. I didn’t tell you these things from the beginning, because I was with you. |
| 16:5 |
“But now I am going away to Himhim who sent Meme, and not one of you asks Meme, ‘Where are Youyou going?’ |
| 16:7 |
Nevertheless, I am telling you the truth. It is for your benefit that I go away, because if I don’t go away the Counselor will not come to you. If I go, I will send Himhim to you. |
| 16:8 |
When Hehe comes, Hehe will convict the world about sin, righteousness, and judgment: |
| 16:9 |
About sin, because they do not believe in Meme; |
| 16:10 |
about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will no longer see Meme; |
| 16:12 |
“I still have many things to tell you, but you can’t bear them now. |
| 16:13 |
When the Spirit of truth comes, Hehe will guide you into all the truth. For Hehe will not speak on Hishis own, but Hehe will speak whatever Hehe hears. He will also declare to you what is to come. |
| 16:14 |
He will glorify Meme, because Hehe will take from what is Minemine and declare it to you. |
| 16:15 |
Everything the Father has is Minemine. This is why I told you that Hehe takes from what is Minemine and will declare it to you. |
| 16:16 |
“AIn a little while, and you will no longer see Meme; again in a little while, and you will see Meme.” |
| 16:17 |
ThereforeThen some of Hishis disciples said to one another, “What is this Hehe’s tellstelling us: ‘AIn a little while, and you will not see Meme; again in a little while, and you will see Me’;me,’ and, ‘becauseBecause I am going to the Father’?” |
| 16:18 |
They said, “What is this Hehe is saying, ‘AIn a little while’? We don’t know what Hehe’s talking about!”.” |
| 16:19 |
Jesus knew they wanted to questionask Himhim, and so Hehe said to them, “Are you asking one another about what I said, ‘AIn a little while, and you will not see Meme; again in a little while, and you will see Meme’? |
| 16:20 |
“Truly I assuretell you:, Youyou will weep and wailmourn, but the world will rejoice. You will become sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn to joy. |
| 16:21 |
When a woman is in labor, she has pain because her time has come. But when she has given birth to a child, she no longer remembers the suffering because of the joy that a person has been born into the world. |
| 16:22 |
So you also have sorrow now. But I will see you again. Your hearts will rejoice, and no one will robtake youaway of your joy from you. |
| 16:23 |
“In that day you will not ask Meme anything. “Truly I assuretell you:, Anythinganything you ask the Father in Mymy name, Hehe will give you. |
| 16:24 |
Until now you have asked for nothing in Mymy name. Ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete. |
| 16:25 |
“I have spoken these things to you in figures of speech. A time is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures, but I will tell you plainly about the Father. |
| 16:26 |
InOn that day you will ask in Mymy name., and I am not telling you that I will makeask requests to the Father on your behalf. |
| 16:27 |
For the Father Himselfhimself loves you, because you have loved Meme and have believed that I came from God. |
| 16:29 |
“Ah!” His disciples said., “NowLook, Younow you’re speaking plainly and not using any figurative language. |
| 16:30 |
Now we know that Youyou know everything and don’t need anyone to question Youyou. By this we believe that Youyou came from God.” |
| 16:32 |
Look:Indeed, Anan hour is coming, and has come, when each of you will be scattered to his own home, and you will leave Meme alone. Yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Meme. |
| 16:33 |
I have told you these things so that in Meme you may have peace. You will have suffering in this world. Be courageous! I have conquered the world.” |
| 17:1 |
Jesus spoke these things, looked up to heaven, and said:, “Father, the hour has come. Glorify Youryour Son so that the Son may glorify Youyou, |
| 17:2 |
forsince Youyou gave Himhim authority over all flesh;people, so Hethat he may give eternal life to alleveryone Youyou have given Himhim. |
| 17:3 |
This is eternal life: that they may know Youyou, the only true God, and the Oneone Youyou have sent — Jesus Christ. |
| 17:4 |
I have glorified Youyou on the earth by completing the work Youyou gave Meme to do. |
| 17:5 |
Now, Father, glorify Meme in Youryour presence with that glory I had with Youyou before the world existed. |
| 17:6 |
“I have revealed Youryour name to the menpeople Youyou gave Meme from the world. They were Yoursyours, Youyou gave them to Meme, and they have kept Youryour word. |
| 17:7 |
Now they know that alleverything thingsyou You have given tome Meis are from Youyou, |
| 17:8 |
because theI wordshave thatgiven Youthem gavethe Me,words Iyou havegave given themme. They have received them and have known for certain that I came from Youyou. They have believed that Youyou sent Meme. |
| 17:9 |
“I pray for them. I am not praying for the world but for those Youyou have given Meme, because they are Yoursyours. |
| 17:10 |
Everything I have is Yoursyours, and everything Youyou have is Minemine, and I haveam been glorified in them. |
| 17:11 |
I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to Youyou. Holy Father, protect them by Youryour name that Youyou have given Meme, so that they may be one as Wewe are one. |
| 17:12 |
While I was with them, I was protecting them by Youryour name that Youyou have given Meme. I guarded them and not one of them is lost, except the son of destruction, so that the Scripture may be fulfilled. |
| 17:13 |
Now I am coming to Youyou, and I speak these things in the world so that they may have Mymy joy completed in them. |
| 17:14 |
I have given them Youryour word. The world hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. |
| 17:15 |
I am not praying that Youyou take them out of the world but that Youyou protect them from the evil one. |
| 17:16 |
They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. |
| 17:17 |
Sanctify them by the truth; Youryour word is truth. |
| 17:18 |
As Youyou sent Meme into the world, I also have sent them into the world. |
| 17:19 |
I sanctify Myselfmyself for them, so that they also may be sanctified by the truth. |
| 17:20 |
“I pray not only for these, but also for those who believe in Meme through their messageword. |
| 17:21 |
May they all be one, as Youyou, Father, are in Meme and I am in Youyou. May they also be one in Usus, so that the world may believe Youyou sent Meme. |
| 17:22 |
I have given them the glory Youyou have given Me.me, Mayso that they may be one as Wewe are one. |
| 17:23 |
I am in them and Youyou are in Me.me, Mayso that they may be made completely one, sothat the world may know Youyou have sent Meme and have loved them as Youyou have loved Meme. |
| 17:24 |
“Father, I desirewant those Youyou have given Meme to be with Meme where I am., Thenso that they will see Mymy glory, which Youyou have given Meme because Youyou loved Meme before the world’s foundation. |
| 17:25 |
Righteous Father!, Thethe world has not known Youyou. However, I have known Youyou, and thesethey have known that Youyou sent Meme. |
| 17:26 |
I made Youryour name known to them and will continue to make it known, so that the love Youyou have loved Meme with may be in them and I may be in them..” |
| 18:1 |
After Jesus had said these things, Hehe went out with Hishis disciples across the Kidron Valley, where there was a garden, and Hehe and Hishis disciples went into it. |
| 18:2 |
Judas, who betrayed Himhim, also knew the place, because Jesus often met there with Hishis disciples. |
| 18:3 |
So Judas took a company of soldiers and some templeofficials police from the chief priests and the Pharisees and came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons. |
| 18:4 |
Then Jesus, knowing everything that was about to happen to Himhim, went out and said to them, “Who is it that you’re lookingseeking?” for?” |
| 18:5 |
“Jesus theof NazareneNazareth,” they answered. “I am Hehe,” Jesus told them. Judas, who betrayed Himhim, was also standing with them. |
| 18:6 |
When HeJesus told them, “I am Hehe,” they stepped back and fell to the ground. |
| 18:7 |
Then Hehe asked them again, “Who is it that you’re looking forseeking?” “Jesus theof NazareneNazareth,” they said. |
| 18:8 |
“I told you I am Hehe,” Jesus replied. “So if you’re looking for Meme, let these men go.” |
| 18:9 |
This was to fulfill the words Hehe had said: “I have not lost one of those Youyou have given Meme.” |
| 18:10 |
Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it, struck the high priest’s slaveservant, and cut off his right ear. (The slaveservant’s name was Malchus.) |
| 18:11 |
At that, Jesus said to Peter, “SheathePut your sword away! Am I not to drink the cup the Father has given Meme?” |
| 18:12 |
Then the company of soldiers, the commander, and the Jewish templeofficials police arrested Jesus and tied Himhim up. |
| 18:13 |
First they led Himhim to Annas, forsince he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year. |
| 18:14 |
Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jews that it waswould advantageousbe thatbetter for one man shouldto die for the people. |
| 18:15 |
Meanwhile, Simon Peter was following Jesus, as was another disciple. That disciple was an acquaintance of the high priest; so he went with Jesus into the high priest’s courtyard. |
| 18:17 |
Then the slaveservant girl who was the doorkeeper said to Peter, “You aren’t one of this man’s disciples too, are you?” “I am not!”,” he said. |
| 18:18 |
Now the slavesservants and the templeofficials police had made a charcoal fire, because it was cold. They were standing there warming themselves, and Peter was standing with them, warming himself. |
| 18:19 |
The high priest questioned Jesus about Hishis disciples and about Hishis teaching. |
| 18:20 |
“I have spoken openly to the world,” Jesus answered him. “I have always taught in the synagogue and in the temple complex, where all the Jews congregategather, and I haven’t spoken anything in secret. |
| 18:21 |
Why do you question Meme? Question those who heard what I told them. Look, they know what I said.” |
| 18:22 |
When Hehe had said these things, one of the templeofficials police standing by slapped Jesus, saying, “Is this the way you answer the high priest?” |
| 18:23 |
“If I have spoken wrongly,” Jesus answered him, “give evidence about the wrong; but if rightly, why do you hit Meme?” |
| 18:24 |
Then Annas sent Himhim bound to Caiaphas the high priest. |
| 18:25 |
Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. They said to him, “You aren’t one of Hishis disciples too, are you?” He denied it and said, “I am not!”.” |
| 18:26 |
One of the high priest’s slavesservants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, said, “Didn’t I see you with Himhim in the garden?” |
| 18:27 |
Peter then denied it again. Immediately a rooster crowed. |
| 18:28 |
Then they tookled Jesus from Caiaphas to the governor’s headquarters. It was early morning. They did not enter the headquarters themselves; otherwise they would be defiled and unable to eat the Passover. |
| 18:29 |
ThenSo Pilate came out to them and said, “What charge do you bring against this man?” |
| 18:30 |
They answered him, “If this man weren’t a criminal, we wouldn’t have handed Himhim over to you.” |
| 18:31 |
So Pilate told them, “TakeYou Himtake yourselveshim and judge Himhim according to your law.” “It’s not legal for us to put anyone to death,” the Jews declared. |
| 18:32 |
They said this so that Jesus’s words might be fulfilled signifyingindicating what kind of death Hehe was going to die. |
| 18:33 |
Then Pilate went back into the headquarters, summoned Jesus, and said to Himhim, “Are Youyou the Kingking of the Jews?” |
| 18:34 |
Jesus answered, “Are you asking this on your own, or have others told you about Meme?” |
| 18:35 |
“I’m not a Jew, am I?” Pilate replied. “Your own nation and the chief priests handed Youyou over to me. What have Youyou done?” |
| 18:36 |
“My kingdom is not of this world,” said Jesus. “If Mymy kingdom were of this world, Mymy servants would fight, so that I wouldn’t be handed over to the Jews. AsBut as it is, Mymy kingdom doesis not havefrom its origin here.” |
| 18:37 |
“You are a king then?” Pilate asked. “You say that I’m a king,” Jesus replied. “I was born for this, and I have come into the world for this: to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to Mymy voice.” |
| 18:38 |
“What is truth?” said Pilate. After he had said this, he went out to the Jews again and told them, “I find no grounds for charging Himhim. |
| 18:39 |
You have a custom that I release one prisoner to you at the Passover. So, do you want me to release to you the Kingking of the Jews?” |
| 19:1 |
Then Pilate took Jesus and had Himhim flogged. |
| 19:2 |
The soldiers also twisted together a crown of thorns, put it on Hishis head, and threwclothed him in a purple robe around Him. |
| 19:3 |
And they repeatedlykept camecoming up to Himhim and saidsaying, “Hail, Kingking of the Jews!” and were slapping Hishis face. |
| 19:4 |
Pilate went outside again and said to them, “Look, I’m bringing Himhim outsideout to you to let you know I find no grounds for charging Himhim.” |
| 19:6 |
When the chief priests and the temple policeservants saw Himhim, they shouted, “Crucify! Crucify!” Pilate responded, “Take Himhim and crucify Himhim yourselves, forsince I find no grounds for charging Himhim.” |
| 19:7 |
“We have a law,” the Jews replied to him, “and according to that law Hehe mustought to die, because Hehe made Himselfhimself the Son of God.” |
| 19:9 |
He went back into the headquarters and asked Jesus, “Where are Youyou from?” But Jesus did not give him an answer. |
| 19:10 |
So Pilate said to Himhim, “You’reDo notyou talkingrefuse to speak to me? Don’t Youyou know that I have the authority to release Youyou and the authority to crucify Youyou?” |
| 19:11 |
“You would have no authority over Meme at all,” Jesus answered him, “if it hadn’t been given you from above. This is why the one who handed Meme over to you has the greater sin.” |
| 19:12 |
From that moment Pilate madekept everytrying effort to release Himhim. But the Jews shouted, “If you release this man, you are not Caesar’s friend. Anyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar!” |
| 19:13 |
When Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus outside. He sat down on the judge’s benchseat in a place called the Stone Pavement (but in HebrewAramaic, Gabbatha). |
| 19:14 |
It was the preparation day for the Passover, and it was about six in the morningnoon. Then he told the Jews, “Here is your king!” |
| 19:15 |
ButThey they shouted, “Take Himhim away! Take Himhim away! Crucify Himhim!” Pilate said to them, “Should I crucify your king?” “We have no king but Caesar!” the chief priests answered. |
| 19:16 |
SoThen then, because of them, he handed Himhim over to be crucified. ThereforeThen they took Jesus away. |
| 19:17 |
Carrying Histhe owncross crossby himself, Hehe went out to what is called Place of the Skull Place, which in HebrewAramaic is called Golgotha. |
| 19:18 |
There they crucified Himhim and two others with Himhim, one on either side, with Jesus in the middle. |
| 19:19 |
Pilate also had a sign letteredmade and put on the cross. TheIt inscription wassaid: JESUSJesus THEof NAZARENENazareth, THEthe KINGKing OFof THEthe JEWSJews. |
| 19:20 |
Many of the Jews read this sign, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in HebrewAramaic, Latin, and Greek. |
| 19:21 |
So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Don’t write, ‘The Kingking of the Jews,’ but that Hehe said, ‘I am the Kingking of the Jews.’” |
| 19:23 |
When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took Hishis clothes and divided them into four parts, a part for each soldier. They also took the tunic, which was seamless, woven in one piece from the top. |
| 19:24 |
So they said to one another, “Let’s not tear it, but cast lots for it, to see who gets it.” TheyThis didhappened thisthat to fulfill the Scripture might be fulfilled that says: They divided Mymy clothes among themselves, and they cast lots for Mymy clothing. AndThis this is what the soldiers did. |
| 19:25 |
Standing by the cross of Jesus were Hishis mother, Hishis mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. |
| 19:26 |
When Jesus saw Hishis mother and the disciple Hehe loved standing there, Hehe said to Hishis mother, “Woman, here is your son.” |
| 19:27 |
Then Hehe said to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” And from that hour the disciple took her into his home. |
| 19:28 |
After this, when Jesus knew that everything was now accomplishedfinished that the Scripture might be fulfilled, Hehe said, “I’m thirsty!”.” |
| 19:29 |
A jar full of sour wine was sitting there; so they fixed a sponge full of sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it up to Hishis mouth. |
| 19:30 |
When Jesus had received the sour wine, Hehe said, “It is finished!”.” Then bowing Hishis head, Hehe gave up Hishis spirit. |
| 19:32 |
So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first man and of the other one who had been crucified with Himhim. |
| 19:33 |
When they came to Jesus, they did not break Hishis legs since they saw that Hehe was already dead. |
| 19:34 |
But one of the soldiers pierced Hishis side with a spear, and at once blood and water came out. |
| 19:36 |
For these things happened so that the Scripture would be fulfilled: Not one of Hishis bones will be broken. |
| 19:37 |
Also, another Scripture says: They will look at the Oneone they pierced. |
| 19:38 |
After this, Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus — but secretly because of his fear of the Jews — asked Pilate that he might remove Jesus’s body. Pilate gave him permission,; so he came and took Hishis body away. |
| 19:39 |
Nicodemus (who had previously come to Himhim at night) also came, bringing a mixture of about 75seventy-five pounds of myrrh and aloes. |
| 19:40 |
ThenThey they took Jesus’s body and wrapped it in linen cloths with the aromaticfragrant spices, according to the burial custom of the Jews. |
| 19:41 |
There was a garden in the place where Hehe was crucified. A new tomb was in the garden; no one had yet been placed in it. |
| 19:42 |
They placed Jesus there because of the Jewish day of preparation and since the tomb was nearby. |
| 20:2 |
So she ranwent running to Simon Peter and to the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said to them, “They’ve have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they’ve have put Himhim!” |
| 20:5 |
Stooping down, he saw the linen cloths lying there, yetbut he did not go in. |
| 20:6 |
Then, following him, Simon Peter also came also. He entered the tomb and saw the linen cloths lying there. |
| 20:7 |
The wrapping that had been on Hishis head was not lying with the linen cloths but was folded up in a separate place by itself. |
| 20:8 |
The other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, then enteredalso thewent tombin, saw, and believed. |
| 20:9 |
For they still did not yet understand the Scripture that Hehe must rise from the dead. |
| 20:10 |
Then the disciples wentreturned hometo againthe place where they were staying. |
| 20:11 |
But Mary stood outside facing the tomb, crying. As she was crying, she stooped to look into the tomb. |
| 20:12 |
She saw two angels in white sitting therewhere Jesus’s body had been lying, one at the head and onethe other at the feet, where Jesus’ body had been lying. |
| 20:13 |
They said to her, “Woman, why are you crying?” “Because they’ve taken away my Lord,” she told them, “and I don’t know where they’ve put Himhim.” |
| 20:14 |
Having said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, thoughbut she did not know it was Jesus. |
| 20:15 |
“Woman,” Jesus said to her, “why are you crying? Who is it that you’re are looking forseeking?” Supposing Hehe was the gardener, she replied, “Sir, if you’ve removedcarried Himhim away, tell me where you’ve put Himhim, and I will take Himhim away.” |
| 20:16 |
Jesus said to her, “Mary.” Turning around, she said to Himhim in HebrewAramaic, “Rabbouni!”—Rabboni!” — which means “Teacher.” |
| 20:17 |
“Don’t cling to Meme,” Jesus told her, “forsince I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to Mymy brothers and tell them that I am ascending to Mymy Father and your Father—, to Mymy God and your God.” |
| 20:18 |
Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord!” And she told them what Hehe had said to her. |
| 20:19 |
InWhen theit was evening ofon that first day of the week, the disciples were gathered together with the doors locked because ofthey theirfeared fear of the Jews. Then Jesus came, stood among them, and said to them, “Peace tobe with you!”.” |
| 20:20 |
Having said this, Hehe showed them Hishis hands and Hishis side. So the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. |
| 20:21 |
Jesus said to them again, “Peace tobe with you!. As the Father has sent Meme, I also send you.” |
| 20:22 |
After saying this, Hehe breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. |
| 20:24 |
But one of the Twelve, Thomas (called “Twin”), one of the Twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. |
| 20:25 |
So the other disciples keptwere telling him, “We’ve have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “If I don’t see the mark of the nails in Hishis hands, put my finger into the mark of the nails, and put my hand into Hishis side, I will never believe!”.” |
| 20:26 |
AfterA eightweek dayslater Hishis disciples were indoors again, and Thomas was with them. Even though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them. Heand said, “Peace tobe with you!”.” |
| 20:27 |
Then Hehe said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and observelook Myat my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into Mymy side. Don’t be an unbelieverfaithless, but abelieve.” believer.” |
| 20:28 |
Thomas responded to Himhim, “My Lord and my God!” |
| 20:29 |
Jesus said, “Because you have seen Meme, you have believed. ThoseBlessed are those who believehave withoutnot seeingseen areand blessedyet believe.” |
| 20:30 |
Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of Hishis disciples that are not written in this book. |
| 20:31 |
But these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in Hishis name. |
| 21:1 |
After this, Jesus revealed Himselfhimself again to Hishis disciples by the Sea of Tiberias. He revealed Himselfhimself in this way: |
| 21:2 |
Simon Peter, Thomas (called “Twin”), Nathanael from Cana of Galilee, Zebedee’s sons, and two others of Hishis disciples were together. |
| 21:4 |
When daybreak came, Jesus stood on the shore. However, but the disciples did not know it was Jesus. |
| 21:5 |
“MenFriends,” Jesus called to them, “you don’t have any fish, do you?” “No,” they answered. |
| 21:6 |
“Cast the net on the right side of the boat,” Hehe told them, “and you’ll find some.” So they did, and they were unable to haul it in because of the large number of fish. |
| 21:7 |
ThereforeThe the disciple, the one Jesus loved, said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he tied his outer garmentclothing around him (for he washad strippedtaken it off) and plunged into the sea. |
| 21:8 |
ButSince since they were not far from land (about 100a hundred yards away), the other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish. |
| 21:11 |
So Simon Peter gotclimbed up and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish — 153 of them. Even though there were so many, the net was not torn. |
| 21:12 |
“Come and have breakfast,” Jesus told them. None of the disciples dared ask Himhim, “Who are Youyou?” because they knew it was the Lord. |
| 21:14 |
This was now the third time Jesus appeared to the disciples after Hehe was raised from the dead. |
| 21:15 |
When they had eaten breakfast, Jesus asked Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love Meme more than these?” “Yes, Lord,” he said to Himhim, “Youyou know that I love Youyou.” “Feed Mymy lambs,” Hehe told him. |
| 21:16 |
A second time Hehe asked him, “Simon, son of John, do you love Meme?” “Yes, Lord,” he said to Himhim, “Youyou know that I love Youyou.” “Shepherd Mymy sheep,” Hehe told him. |
| 21:17 |
He asked him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love Meme?” Peter was grieved that Hehe asked him the third time, “Do you love Meme?” He said, “Lord, Youyou know everything!; Youyou know that I love Youyou.” “Feed Mymy sheep,” Jesus said. |
| 21:18 |
“Truly I assuretell you:, Whenwhen you were youngyounger, you would tie your belt and walk wherever you wanted. But when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands and someone else will tie you and carry you where you don’t want to go.” |
| 21:19 |
He said this to signifyindicate by what kind of death hePeter would glorify God. After saying this, Hehe told him, “Follow Me!”me.” |
| 21:20 |
So Peter turned around and saw the disciple Jesus loved following them., That disciple was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and asked, “Lord, who is the one that’s going to betray Youyou?” |
| 21:21 |
When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, “Lord—, what about him?” |
| 21:22 |
“If I want him to remain until I come,” Jesus answered, “what is that to you? As for you, follow Meme.” |
| 21:23 |
So this reportrumor spread to the brothers and sisters that this disciple would not die. Yet Jesus did not tell him that he would not die, but, “If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you?” |
| 21:25 |
And there are also many other things that Jesus did, which, if theyevery one of them were written one by onedown, I suppose not even the world itself could contain the books that would be written. |
