4:3 Now Tobiah the Ammonite was by him, and he said, EvenWhat that which they are building, if a fox goclimbed up it, he shallwould break down their stone wall.
4:4 Hear, O our God;, for we are despised:. andTurn turn back their reproach uponon their own head,. andGive give them up for a spoilplunder in a land of captivity;.
4:5 andDont cover not their iniquity,. andDont let not their sin be blotted out from before theeyou; for they have provokedinsulted thee to anger before the builders.
4:6 So we built the wall; and all the wall was joined together untoto half theits height, thereof: for the people had a mind to work.
4:7 But it came to pass that, when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and the Arabians, and the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites, heard that the repairing of the walls of Jerusalem went forward, and that the breaches began to be stoppedfilled, then they were very wrothangry;
4:8 and they conspired all ofconspired them together to come and fight against Jerusalem, and to cause confusion thereinamong us.
4:9 But we made our prayer untoto our God, and set a watch against them day and night, because of them.
4:10 And Judah said, The strength of the bearers of burdens is decayed, fading and there is much rubbish;rubble, so that we are not able to build the wall.
4:11 AndOur our adversaries said, They shallwill not know, neitheror see, tilluntil we come intoin theamong midst of them, and slaykill them, and cause the work to cease.
4:12 AndWhen it came to pass that, when the Jews thatwho dweltlived by them came, they said untoto us ten times from all places, YeWherever mustyou returnturn, untothey will attack us.
4:13 Therefore I set Iguards in the lowest parts of the space behind the wall, in the open places,. I set there the people afterby theirfamily familiesgroups with their swords, their spears, and their bows.
4:14 And I looked, and rose up, and said untoto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, BeDont notbe ye afraid of them:! rememberRemember the Lord, who is great and terribleawesome, and fight for your brethrenbrothers, your sons, and your daughters, your wives, and your houses.
4:15 AndWhen it came to pass, when our enemies heard that it was known untoto us, and God had brought their counsel to noughtnothing, that we returned all of us returned to the wall, everyeveryone oneto unto his work.
4:16 AndFrom it came to pass from that time forth, that half of my servants wroughtdid in the work, and half of them held the spears, the shields, and the bows, and the coats of mail; and the rulers were behind all the house of Judah.
4:17 TheyThose thatwho buildedbuilt the wall, and theythose thatwho barebore burdens ladedloaded themselves; everyeveryone one with one of his hands wroughtdid in the work, and with the other held his weapon;.
4:18 andAmong the builders, everyeveryone onewore had his sword girdedat by his side, and so buildedbuilt. AndHe hewho that sounded the trumpet was by me.
4:19 And I said untoto the nobles, and to the rulers and to the rest of the people, The work is great and largewidely spread out, and we are separated uponon the wall, one far from one another:.
4:20 inWherever whatyou place soever ye hear the sound of the trumpet, resortrally yethere thitherto unto us;. ourOur God will fight for us.
4:21 So we wroughtdid in the work:. andHalf half of themthe people held the spears from the rising of the morning tilluntil the stars appeared.
4:22 Likewise at the same time I said Ito unto the people, Let everyeveryone one with his servant lodge within Jerusalem, that in the night they may be a guard to us, and may labor in the day.
4:23 So neither I, nor my brethrenbrothers, nor my servants, nor the men of the guard thatwho followed me, nonetook of us put off our clothes,. everyEveryone onetook went with his weapon to the water.
5:1 Then there arose a great cry of the people and of their wives against their brethrenbrothers the Jews.
5:2 For there were thatsome who said, We, our sons and our daughters, are many:. letLet us get grain, that we may eat and live.
5:3 SomeThere were also theresome werewho that said, We are mortgaging our fields, and our vineyards, and our houses:. letLet us get grain, because of the dearthfamine.
5:4 There were also thatsome who said, We have borrowed money for the kings tribute uponusing our fields and our vineyards as collateral.
5:5 Yet now our flesh is as the flesh of our brethrenbrothers, our children as their children:. andBehold, lo, we bring into bondage our sons and our daughters into bondage to be servants, and some of our daughters arehave been brought into bondage. already:It neither is italso not in our power to help it;, forbecause other men have our fields and our vineyards.
5:6 And I was very angry when I heard their cry and these words.
5:7 Then I consulted with myself, and contended with the nobles and the rulers, and said untoto them, YeYou exact usury, everyeveryone one of his brother. And I held a great assembly against them.
5:8 And I said untoto them, We, after our ability, have redeemed our brethrenbrothers the Jews, that were sold untoto the nations; and would yeyou even sell your brethrenbrothers, and should they be sold untoto us? Then they held they their peace, and found nevernot a word to say.
5:9 Also I said, The thing that yeyou do is not good:. oughtShouldnt yeyou not to walk in the fear of our God, because of the reproach of the nations, our enemies?
5:10 And I likewise, my brethrenbrothers and my servants, do lend them money and grain. IPlease pray you, let us leavestop off this usury.
5:11 Restore,Please Irestore pray you, to them, even this daytoday, their fields, their vineyards, their oliveyardsolive groves, and their houses, also the hundredth part of the money, and of the grain, the new wine, and the oil, that yeyou exactare ofcharging them.
5:12 Then they said they, We will restore them, and will require nothing of them;. soWe will wedo doso, even as thouyou sayestsay. Then I called the priests, and took an oath of them, that they would do according to this promise.
5:13 Also I shook out my lap, and said, So may God shake out every man from his house, and from his labor, that performethdoesnt notperform this promise; even thusmay he be he shaken out, and emptied like this. AndAll all the assembly said, Amen, and praised JehovahYahweh. AndThe the people did according to this promise.
5:14 Moreover from the time that I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah, from the twentieth year even untoto the twothirty andsecond thirtieth year of Artaxerxes the king, that is, twelve years, I and my brethrenbrothers have not eaten the bread of the governor.
5:15 But the former governors thatwho were before me were chargeablesupported untoby the people, and took of them bread and wine from them, besidesplus forty shekels of silver; yeayes, even their servants bareruled rule over the people:, but soI diddidnt notdo Iso, because of the fear of God.
5:16 YeaYes, I also I continued in the work of this wall,. neitherWe boughtdidnt webuy any land:. andAll all my servants were gathered thitherthere untoto the work.
5:17 Moreover there were at my table, of the Jews and the rulers, aone hundred and fifty men, besidesin addition to those thatwho came untoto us from among the nations that were roundaround about us.
5:18 Now that which was prepared for one day was one ox and six choice sheep;. alsoAlso fowls were prepared for me, and once in ten days a store of all sorts of wine:. yetYet for all this, I demandeddidnt notdemand the breadgovernors of the governorpay, because the bondage was heavy uponon this people.
5:19 Remember unto me, O my God, for all the good, all that I have done for this people.
6:1 Now it came to pass, when it was reported to Sanballat, and Tobiah, and to Geshem the Arabian, and untoto the rest of our enemies, that I had buildedbuilt the wall, and that there was no breach left thereinin it though even untoto that time I had not set up the doors in the gates,
6:2 that Sanballat and Geshem sent untoto me, saying, Come,! letLets us meet together in one of the villages in the plain of Ono. But they thoughtintended to doharm me mischief.
6:3 And I sent messengers untoto them, saying, I am doing a great work, so that I cannotcant come down:. whyWhy should the work cease, whilstwhile I leave it, and come down to you?
6:4 AndThey they sent untoto me four times afterlike this sort; and I answered them after the same mannerway.
6:5 Then Sanballat sent Sanballat his servant untoto me inthe likesame mannerway the fifth time with an open letter in his hand,
6:6 whereinin which was written, It is reported among the nations, and Gashmu saithsays it, that thouyou and the Jews thinkintend to rebel;. forBecause whichof causethat, thouyou artare building the wall:. andYou thouwould wouldest be their king, according to these words.
6:7 AndYou thouhave hast also appointed prophets to preachproclaim of theeyou at Jerusalem, saying, There is a king in Judah:! andNow nowit shallwill it be reported to the king according to these words. Come now therefore, and letlets us take counsel together.
6:8 Then I sent untoto him, saying, There are no such things done as thouyou sayestsay, but thouyou feignestimagine them out of thineyour own heart.
6:9 For they all would have made us afraid, saying, Their hands shallwill be weakened from the work, that it not be not done. But now, O God, strengthen thou my hands.
6:10 And I went untoto the house of Shemaiah the son of Delaiah the son of Mehetabel, who was shut upin at his home; and he said, Let us meet together in theGods house of God, within the temple, and letlets us shut the doors of the temple:; for they will come to slaykill thee;you. yeaYes, in the night they will they come to slaykill theeyou.
6:11 And I said, Should such a man aslike Ime flee? andWho who is there, that, being such as I, would go into the temple to save his life? I will not go in.
6:12 And I discerned, and, lobehold, God had not sent him;, but he pronounced this prophecy against me:. and Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him.
6:13 ForHe this cause was he hired, so that I shouldwould be afraid, and do so, and sin, and that they might have mattermaterial for an evil report, that they might reproach me.
6:14 Remember, O my God, Tobiah and Sanballat according to these their works, and also the prophetess Noadiah, and the rest of the prophets, that would have put me in fear.
6:15 So the wall was finished in the twenty and fifth day of the month Elul, in fifty and two days.
6:16 AndWhen it came to pass, when all our enemies heard thereofof it, that all the nations that were aboutaround us fearedwere afraid, and werethey muchlost cast down in their own eyesconfidence; for they perceived that this work was wroughtdone ofby our God.
6:17 Moreover in those days the nobles of Judah sent many letters untoto Tobiah, and theTobiahs letters of Tobiah came untoto them.
6:18 For there were many in Judah sworn untoto him, because he was the son in law of Shecaniah the son of Arah; and his son Jehohanan had taken the daughter of Meshullam the son of Berechiah toas wife.
6:19 Also they spakespoke of his good deeds before me, and reported my words to him. And Tobiah sent letters to put me in fear.
7:1 Now it came to pass, when the wall was built, and I had set up the doors, and the portersgatekeepers and the singers and the Levites were appointed,
7:2 that I gaveput my brother Hanani, and Hananiah the governor of the castlefortress, in charge overof Jerusalem; for he was a faithful man, and feared God above many.
7:3 And I said untoto them, LetDont notlet the gates of Jerusalem be opened until the sun beis hot; and while they stand on guard, let them shut the doors, and you bar ye them:; and appoint watches of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, everyeveryone one in his watch, andwith everyeveryone onenear to be over against his house.
7:4 Now the city was wide and large; but the people were few therein, and the houses were not buildedbuilt.
7:5 AndMy my God put into my heart to gather together the nobles, and the rulers, and the people, that they might be reckonedlisted by genealogy. And I found the book of the genealogy of themthose thatwho came up at the first, and I found this written thereinin it:

7:72 AndThat that which the rest of the people gave was twenty thousand darics of gold, andplus two thousand poundsminas of silver, and threescoresixty and seven priests garments.
7:73 So the priests, and the Levites, and the portersgatekeepers, and the singers, and some of the people, and the Nethinimtemple servants, and all Israel, dweltlived in their cities. AndWhen when the seventh month washad come, the children of Israel were in their cities.
8:1 AndAll all the people gathered themselves together as one man into the broadwide place that was beforein front of the water gate; and they spakespoke untoto Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses, which JehovahYahweh had commanded to Israel.
8:2 And Ezra the priest brought the law before the assembly, both men and women, and all thatwho could hear with understanding, uponon the first day of the seventh month.
8:3 AndHe he read thereinfrom it before the broadwide place that was beforein front of the water gate from early morning until midday, in the presence of the men and the women, and of those thatwho could understand;. andThe the ears of all the people were attentive untoto the book of the law.
8:4 And Ezra the scribe stood uponon a pulpit of wood, which they had made for the purpose; and beside him stood Mattithiah, and Shema, and Anaiah, and Uriah, and Hilkiah, and Maaseiah, on his right hand; and on his left hand, Pedaiah, and Mishael, and Malchijah, and Hashum, and Hashbaddanah, Zechariah, and Meshullam.

8:8 AndThey they read in the book, in the law of God, distinctly; and they gave the sense, so that they understood the reading.
8:9 And Nehemiah, who was the governor, and Ezra the priest theand scribe, and the Levites thatwho taught the people, said untoto all the people, ThisToday day is holy untoto JehovahYahweh your God;. Dont mourn not, nor weep. For all the people wept, when they heard the words of the law.
8:10 Then he said untoto them, Go your way,. eatEat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions untoto him for whom nothing is prepared;, for thistoday day is holy untoto our Lord:. neitherDont be ye grieved;, for the joy of JehovahYahweh is your strength.
8:11 So the Levites stilledcalmed all the people, saying, Hold your peace, for the day is holy;. neitherDont be ye grieved.
8:12 AndAll all the people went their way to eat, and to drink, and to send portions, and to make great mirthcelebrate, because they had understood the words that were declared untoto them.
8:13 AndOn on the second day, were gathered together the heads of fathers houseshouseholds of all the people, the priests, and the Levites, untowere gathered together to Ezra the scribe, even to givestudy attention to the words of the law.
8:14 AndThey they found written in the law, how thatYahweh Jehovah had commanded by Moses, that the children of Israel should dwell in booths in the feast of the seventh month;
8:15 and that they should publish and proclaim in all their cities, and in Jerusalem, saying, Go forthout untoto the mountmountain, and fetchget olive branches, and branches of wild olive, and myrtle branches, and palm branches, and branches of thick trees, to make boothstemporary shelters, as it is written.
8:16 So the people went forth, out and brought them, and made themselves boothstemporary shelters, everyeveryone oneon upon the roof of his house, and in their courts, and in the courts of theGods house of God, and in the broadwide place of the water gate, and in the broadwide place of theEphraims gate of Ephraim.
8:17 AndAll all the assembly of themthose thatwho werehad come againback out of the captivity made booths, temporary shelters and dweltlived in the booths:temporary shelters, for since the days of JeshuaJoshua the son of Nun untoto that day had not the children of Israel had not done so. AndThere there was very great gladness.
8:18 Also day by day, from the first day untoto the last day, he read in the book of the law of God. AndThey they kept the feast seven days; and on the eighth day was a solemn assembly, according untoto the ordinance.
9:1 Now in the twenty and fourth day of this month the children of Israel were assembled with fasting, and with sackcloth, and earthdirt uponon them.
9:2 AndThe theoffspring seed of Israel separated themselves from all foreigners, and stood and confessed their sins, and the iniquities of their fathers.
9:3 AndThey they stood up in their place, and read in the book of the law of JehovahYahweh their God a fourth part of the day; and anothera fourth part they confessed, and worshippedworshiped JehovahYahweh their God.
9:4 Then stood up upon the stairs of the Levites, Jeshua, and Bani, Kadmiel, Shebaniah, Bunni, Sherebiah, Bani, and Chenani of the Levites stood up on the stairs, and cried with a loud voice untoto JehovahYahweh their God.
9:5 Then the Levites, Jeshua, and Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabneiah, Sherebiah, Hodiah, Shebaniah, and Pethahiah, said, Stand up and bless JehovahYahweh your God from everlasting to everlasting;! andBlessed blessed be thyyour glorious name, which is exalted above all blessing and praise.!
9:6 ThouYou artare JehovahYahweh, even thouyou alone;. thouYou hasthave made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their hostarmy, the earth and all things that are thereonon it, the seas and all that is in them, and thouyou preservestpreserve them all;. andThe thearmy host of heaven worshippethworships theeyou.
9:7 ThouYou artare JehovahYahweh, the God, who didstchose choose Abram, andbrought broughtest him forth out of Ur of the Chaldees, andgave gavest him the name of Abraham,
9:8 andfound foundest his heart faithful before theeyou, and madestmade a covenant with him to give the land of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite, and the Perizzite, and the Jebusite, and the Girgashite, to give it untoto his seedoffspring, and hasthave performed thyyour words;, for thouyou artare righteous.
9:9 AndYou thousaw sawest the affliction of our fathers in Egypt, and heardestheard their cry by the Red Sea,
9:10 and showedstshowed signs and wonders uponagainst Pharaoh, andagainst on all his servants, and onagainst all the people of his land;, for thouyou knewestknew that they dealt proudly against them, and didstmade geta theename afor nameyourself, as it is this daytoday.
9:11 AndYou thoudivided didst divide the sea before them, so that they went through the midstmiddle of the sea on the dry land; and you cast their pursuers thou didst cast into the depths, as a stone into the mighty waters.
9:12 Moreover, in a pillar of cloud thouyou leddestled them by day; and in a pillar of fire by night, to give them light in the way whereinin which they should go.
9:13 ThouYou camestalso came down alsoon uponMount mount Sinai, and spakestspoke with them from heaven, and gavestgave them right ordinances and true laws, good statutes and commandments,
9:14 and madestmade known untoto them thyyour holy sabbathSabbath, and commandedstcommanded them commandments, and statutes, and a law, by Moses thyyour servant,
9:15 and gavestgave them bread from heaventhe sky for their hunger, and broughtestbrought forth water for them out of the rock for them for their thirst, and commandedstcommanded them that they should go in to possess the land which thouyou hadsthad sworn to give them.
9:16 But they and our fathers dealtbehaved proudly, and hardened their neck, anddidnt hearkenedlisten not to thyyour commandments,
9:17 and refused to obey,. neitherThey werewerent mindful of thyyour wonders that thouyou didstdid among them, but hardened their neck, and in their rebellion appointed a captain to return to their bondage. But thouyou artare a God ready to pardon, gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abundant in lovingkindnessloving kindness, and forsookestdidnt forsake them not.
9:18 YeaYes, when they had made themthemselves a moltenmolded calf, and said, This is thyyour God thatwho brought theeyou up out of Egypt, and had wroughtcommitted greatawful provocations;blasphemies,
9:19 yet thouyou in thyyour manifold mercies forsookestdidnt forsake them not in the wilderness:. theThe pillar of cloud departeddidnt notdepart from over them by day, to lead them in the way; neither did the pillar of fire by night, to show them light, and the way whereinin which they should go.
9:20 ThouYou gavestgave also thyyour good Spirit to instruct them, and withheldestdidnt notwithhold thyyour manna from their mouth, and gavestgave them water for their thirst.
9:21 YeaYes, forty years didstyou thousustained sustain them in the wilderness,. andThey they lacked nothing;. theirTheir clothes waxeddidnt notgrow old, and their feet swelleddidnt notswell.
9:22 Moreover thouyou gavestgave them kingdoms and peoples, which thouyou didstallotted allotaccording afterto their portions:. soSo they possessed the land of Sihon, even the land of the king of Heshbon, and the land of Og king of Bashan.
9:23 TheirYou children also multipliedstmultiplied thoutheir children as the stars of heaventhe sky, and broughtestbrought them into the land concerning which thouyou didstsaid say to their fathers, that they should go in to possess it.
9:24 So the children went in and possessed the land,; and thouyou subduedstsubdued before them the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, and gavestgave them into their hands, with their kings, and the peoples of the land, that they might do with them as they wouldpleased.
9:25 AndThey they took fortified cities, and a fatrich land, and possessed houses full of all good things, cisterns hewndug out, vineyards, andolive oliveyardsgroves, and fruit trees in abundance:. soSo they did eatate, and were filled, and became fat, and delighted themselves in thyyour great goodness.
9:26 Nevertheless they were disobedient, and rebelled against theeyou, and cast thyyour law behind their back, andkilled slewyour thy prophets that testified against them to turn them again untoto theeyou, and they wroughtcommitted greatawful provocationsblasphemies.
9:27 Therefore thouyou deliveredstdelivered them into the hand of their adversaries, who distressed them:. andIn in the time of their trouble, when they cried untoto theeyou, thouyou heardestheard from heaven; and according to thyyour manifold mercies thouyou gavestgave them saviourssaviors who saved them out of the handhands of their adversaries.
9:28 But after they had rest, they did evil again before theeyou; therefore leftestyou thouleft them in the handhands of their enemies, so that they had the dominion over them:; yet when they returned, and cried untoto theeyou, thouyou heardestheard from heaven; and many times didstyou thoudelivered deliver them according to thyyour mercies,
9:29 and testifiedsttestified against them, that thouyou mightestmight bring them again untoto thyyour law. Yet they dealtwere proudlyarrogant, and hearkeneddidnt notlisten untoto thyyour commandments, but sinned against thineyour ordinances which if a man dodoes, he shall live in them, andturned withdrewtheir the shoulderbacks, andstiffened hardened their neck, and would not hear.
9:30 Yet many years didstyou thouput bearup with them, and testifiedsttestified against them by thyyour Spirit through thyyour prophets:. yetYet they would they not givelisten. ear:Therefore thereforeyou gavestgave thou them into the hand of the peoples of the lands.
9:31 Nevertheless in thyyour manifold mercies thouyou didstdidnt not make a full end of them, nor forsake them; for thouyou artare a gracious and merciful God.
9:32 Now therefore, our God, the great, the mighty, and the terribleawesome God, who keepestkeeps covenant and lovingkindnessloving kindness, dont let not all the travail seem little before thee, you that hathhas come uponon us, on our kings, on our princes, and on our priests, and on our prophets, and on our fathers, and on all thyyour people, since the time of the kings of Assyria untoto this day.
9:33 HowbeitHowever thouyou artare just in all that ishas come uponon us; for thouyou hasthave dealt truly, but we have done wickedly;.
9:34 neitherAlso have our kings, our princes, our priests, norand our fathers, have not kept thyyour law, nor hearkenedlistened untoto thyyour commandments and thyyour testimonies wherewithwith thouwhich didstyou testifytestified against them.
9:35 For they have not served theeyou in their kingdom, and in thyyour great goodness that thouyou gavestgave them, and in the large and fatrich land which thouyou gavestgave before them,. neitherThey turneddidnt theyturn from their wicked works.
9:36 Behold, we are servants this daytoday, and as for the land that thouyou gavestgave untoto our fathers to eat theits fruit thereof and theits good thereof, behold, we are servants in it.
9:37 AndIt ityields yieldeth much increase untoto the kings whom thouyou hasthave set over us because of our sins:. alsoAlso they have power over our bodies, and over our cattlelivestock, at their pleasure, and we are in great distress.
9:38 AndYet yet for all this, we make a sure covenant, and write it; and our princes, our Levites, and our priests, seal unto it.

10:31 and if the peoples of the land bring wares or any grain on the sabbathSabbath day to sell, that we would not buy offrom them on the sabbathSabbath, or on a holy day; and that we would forego the seventh year, crops and the exaction of every debt.
10:32 Also we made ordinances for usourselves, to charge ourselves yearly with the third part of a shekel for the service of the house of our God;:
10:33 for the showbreadshow bread, and for the continual meal offering, and for the continual burnt offering, for the sabbathsSabbaths, for the new moons, for the set feasts, and for the holy things, and for the sin offerings to make atonement for Israel, and for all the work of the house of our God.

13:3 AndIt it came to pass, when they had heard the law, that they separated from Israel all the mixed multitude from Israel.
13:4 Now before this, Eliashib the priest, who was appointed over the chambersrooms of the house of our God, being allied untoto Tobiah,
13:5 had prepared for him a great chamberroom, where aforetimebefore they laid the meal offerings, the frankincense, and the vessels, and the tithes of the grain, the new wine, and the oil, which were given by commandment to the Levites, and the singers, and the portersgatekeepers; and the heavewave offerings for the priests.
13:6 But in all this, time I was not at Jerusalem; for in the twothirty andsecond thirtieth year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon I went untoto the king:; and after certainsome days I asked I leave of the king,
13:7 and I came to Jerusalem, and understood the evil that Eliashib had done for Tobiah, in preparing him a chamberroom in the courts of theGods house of God.
13:8 AndIt it grieved me sore:severely. thereforeTherefore I castthrew forth all theTobiahs household stuff of Tobiah out of the chamberroom.
13:9 Then I commanded, and they cleansed the chambers:rooms. andI thither brought Iinto againthem the vessels of theGods house of God, with the meal offerings and the frankincense again.
13:10 And I perceived that the portions of the Levites had not been given them;, so that the Levites and the singers, thatwho did the work, werehad each fled every one to his field.
13:11 Then I contended I with the rulers, and said, Why is theGods house of God forsaken? And I gathered them together, and set them in their place.
13:12 Then brought all Judah brought the tithe of the grain, and the new wine, and the oil untoto the treasuries.
13:13 And I made treasurers over the treasuries, Shelemiah the priest, and Zadok the scribe, and of the Levites, Pedaiah: and next to them was Hanan the son of Zaccur, the son of Mattaniah; for they were counted faithful, and their business was to distribute untoto their brethrenbrothers.
13:14 Remember me, O my God, concerning this, and dont wipe not out my good deeds that I have done for the house of my God, and for theits observances thereof.
13:15 In those days saw I insaw Judah some men treading winepresseswine presses on the sabbathSabbath in Judah, and bringing in sheaves, and ladingloading assesdonkeys therewith;with as also wine, grapes, and figs, and all mannerkinds of burdens, which they brought into Jerusalem on the sabbathSabbath day:; and I testified against them in the day whereinin which they sold victualsfood.
13:16 ThereSome dwelt men of Tyre also thereinlived there, who brought in fish, and all mannerkinds of wares, and sold on the sabbathSabbath untoto the children of Judah, and in Jerusalem.
13:17 Then I contended with the nobles of Judah, and said untoto them, What evil thing is this that yeyou do, and profane the sabbathSabbath day?
13:18 DidDidnt not your fathers thusdo this, and diddidnt not our God bring all this evil uponon us, and uponon this city? yetYet yeyou bring more wrath uponon Israel by profaning the sabbathSabbath.
13:19 AndIt it came to pass that, when the gates of Jerusalem began to be dark before the sabbathSabbath, I commanded that the doors should be shut, and commanded that they should not be opened tilluntil after the sabbath:Sabbath. andI set some of my servants set I over the gates, so that there should no burden should be brought in on the sabbathSabbath day.
13:20 So the merchants and sellers of all kindkinds of wares lodgedcamped withoutoutside of Jerusalem once or twice.
13:21 Then I testified against them, and said untoto them, Why lodgedo yeyou aboutstay around the wall? ifIf yeyou do so again, I will lay hands on you. From that time forthon, came they nodidnt morecome on the sabbathSabbath.
13:22 And I commanded the Levites that they should purify themselves, and that they should come and keep the gates, to sanctify the sabbathSabbath day. Remember unto me, Ofor mythis Godalso, thismy alsoGod, and spare me according to the greatness of thyyour lovingkindnessloving kindness.
13:23 In those days I also saw I the Jews thatwho had married women of Ashdod, of Ammon, and of Moab:;
13:24 and their children spakespoke half in the speech of Ashdod, and could not speak in the Jews language, but according to the language of each people.
13:25 And I contended with them, and cursed them, andstruck smote certain of them, and plucked off their hair, and made them swear by God, saying,You Ye shall not give your daughters untoto their sons, nor take their daughters for your sons, or for yourselves.
13:26 DidDidnt not Solomon king of Israel sin by these things? yetYet among many nations there was there no king like him, and he was belovedloved ofby his God, and God made him king over all Israel:. neverthelessNevertheless evenforeign himwomen didcaused foreigneven womenhim cause to sin.
13:27 Shall we then hearkenlisten untoto you to do all this great evil, to trespass against our God in marrying foreign women?
13:28 AndOne one of the sons of Joiada, the son of Eliashib the high priest, was son in law to Sanballat the Horonite:; therefore I chased him from me.
13:29 Remember them, O my God, because they have defiled the priesthood, and the covenant of the priesthood, and of the Levites.
13:30 Thus I cleansed I them from all foreigners, and appointed chargesduties for the priests and for the Levites, everyeveryone one in his work;
13:31 and for the wood offering, at appointed times appointed, and for the first fruits. Remember me, O my God, for good.
