| 4:1 |
But itNow came to pass that when SanballatSanbal′lat heard that we were building the wall he was wrothangry and tookgreatly greatenraged indignation and mockedhe ridiculed the Jews |
| 4:2 |
And he spakesaid beforein the presence of his brethren and of the army of SamariaSamar′ia and said What are these feeble Jews doing willWill they fortifyrestore themselvesthings willWill they sacrifice willWill they makefinish anup end in a day willWill they revive the stones out of the heaps of rubbish seeingand theyburned areones burnedat that |
| 4:3 |
NowTobi′ah Tobiah the Ammonite was by him and he said EvenYes thatwhat which they are building —if a fox gogoes up on it he shallwill break down their stone wall |
| 4:4 |
Hear O our God; for we are despised:; and turn back their reproachtaunt upon their own headheads and give them up forto abe spoilplundered in a land ofwhere captivity;they are captives |
| 4:5 |
andDo not cover not their iniquityguilt and let not their sin be blotted out from beforethy theesight; for they have provoked thee to anger before the builders |
| 4:6 |
So we built the wall; and all the wall was joined together untoto half theits height thereof:For for the people had a mind to work |
| 4:7 |
But it came to pass that when SanballatSanbal′lat and TobiahTobi′ah and the ArabiansArabs and the Ammonites and the AshdoditesAsh′dodites heard that the repairing of the walls of Jerusalem wentwas going forward and that the breaches beganwere beginning to be stoppedclosed then they were very wrothangry; |
| 4:8 |
and they conspired all ofplotted them together to come and fight against Jerusalem and to cause confusion thereinin it |
| 4:9 |
ButAnd we madeprayed ourto prayer unto our God and set a watchguard as a protection against them day and night because of them |
| 4:10 |
AndBut Judah said The strength of the burden bearers of burdens is decayedfailing and there is much rubbish; so that we are not able to buildwork on the wall |
| 4:11 |
And our adversariesenemies said They shallwill not know neitheror see till we come into the midst of them and slaykill them and causestop the work to cease |
| 4:12 |
AndWhen it came to pass that when the Jews thatwho dweltlived by them came they said untoto us ten times fromFrom all the places Yewhere mustthey returnlive untothey will come up against us |
| 4:13 |
ThereforeSo set I in the lowest parts of the space behind the wall in the open places I setstationed there the people afteraccording to their families with their swords their spears and their bows |
| 4:14 |
And I looked and rosearose up and said untoto the nobles and to the rulersofficials and to the rest of the people BeDo not yebe afraid of them: rememberRemember the Lord who is great and terrible and fight for your brethren your sons and your daughters your wives and your houseshomes |
| 4:15 |
AndWhen it came to pass when our enemies heard that it was known untoto us and that God had broughtfrustrated their counselplan to nought that we returned all ofreturned us to the wall everyeach oneto unto his work |
| 4:16 |
AndFrom it came to pass from that timeday forthon that half of my servants wroughtworked inon theconstruction work and half of them held the spears the shields and the bows and the coats of mail; and the rulersleaders werestood behind all the house of Judah |
| 4:17 |
Theywho thatwere buildedbuilding on the wall andThose theywho thatcarried bare burdens ladedwere themselves;laden everyin onesuch a way that each with one ofhand hislabored handson wrought in the work and with the other held his weapon; |
| 4:18 |
andAnd each of the builders every one had his sword girded byat his side andwhile sohe buildedbuilt AndThe heman thatwho sounded the trumpet was bybeside me |
| 4:19 |
And I said untoto the nobles and to the rulersofficials and to the rest of the people The work is great and largewidely spread and we are separated uponon the wall one far from one another: |
| 4:20 |
inIn whatthe place soeverwhere yeyou hear the sound of the trumpet resortrally yeto thitherus untothere us;Our our God will fight for us |
| 4:21 |
So we wroughtlabored inat the work: and half of them held the spears from the risingbreak of thedawn morning till the stars appearedcame out |
| 4:22 |
LikewiseI atalso thesaid sameto timethe saidpeople Iat untothat thetime people Let every oneman withand his servant lodgepass the night within Jerusalem that in the night they may be a guard tofor us by night and may labor inby the day |
| 4:23 |
So neither I nor my brethren nor my servants nor the men of the guard thatwho followed me none of us puttook off our clothes; everyeach onekept went with his weapon toin thehis waterhand |
| 5:1 |
ThenNow there arose a great cryoutcry of the people and of their wives against their Jewish brethren the Jews |
| 5:2 |
For there were thatthose who said WeWith our sons and our daughters we are many:; let us get grain that we may eat and livekeep alive |
| 5:3 |
SomeThere were also therethose werewho that said We are mortgaging our fields and our vineyards and our houses: letto us get grain because of the dearthfamine |
| 5:4 |
ThereAnd there were alsothose thatwho said We have borrowed money for the kings tributetax upon our fields and our vineyards |
| 5:5 |
YetNow now our flesh is as the flesh of our brethren our children are as their children:; andyet lo we bringare intoforcing bondage our sons and our daughters to be servantsslaves and some of our daughters arehave broughtalready intobeen bondageenslaved; already:but neitherit is itnot in our power to help it; for other men have our fields and our vineyards |
| 5:6 |
And I was very angry when I heard their cryoutcry and these words |
| 5:7 |
Then I consultedtook counsel with myself and contendedI withbrought charges against the nobles and the rulersofficials andI said untoto them YeYou exactare usuryexacting everyinterest oneeach offrom his brother And I held a great assembly against them |
| 5:8 |
Andand I said untoto them We afteras ourfar abilityas we are able have redeemedbought back our Jewish brethren thewho Jewshave thatbeen were sold untoto the nations; andbut wouldyou ye even sell your brethren andthat should they may be sold untoto us ThenThey heldwere theysilent theirand peacecould andnot foundfind never a word to say |
| 5:9 |
AlsoSo I said The thing that yeyou doare doing is not good: oughtOught yeyou not to walk in the fear of our God becauseto ofprevent the reproachtaunts of the nations our enemies |
| 5:10 |
AndMoreover I likewiseand my brethren and my servants doare lendlending them money and grain ILet pray you let us leave off this usuryinterest |
| 5:11 |
RestoreReturn I pray you to them even this very day their fields their vineyards their oliveyardsolive orchards and their houses alsoand the hundredth part of the money and of the grain the new wine and the oil thatwhich yeyou exacthave been exacting of them |
| 5:12 |
Then they said they We will restore themthese and will require nothing offrom them; soWe will we do even as thouyou sayestsay ThenAnd I called the priests and took an oath of them thatto they would do accordingas tothey thishad promisepromised |
| 5:13 |
Also I also shook out my lap and said So may God shake out every man from his house and from his labor thatwho performethdoes not perform this promise; evenSo thusmay he be he shaken out and emptied And all the assembly said Amen and praised Jehovahthe Lord And the people did accordingas tothey thishad promisepromised |
| 5:14 |
Moreover from the time that I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah from the twentieth year evento unto the twothirty andsecond thirtieth year of ArtaxerxesAr ta xerx′es the king that is twelve years neither I andnor my brethren haveate notthe eatenfood theallowance bread of the governor |
| 5:15 |
ButThe the former governors thatwho were before me werelaid chargeableheavy untoburdens upon the people and took offrom them breadfood and wine besides forty shekels of silver; yeaEven even their servants barelorded ruleit over the people: butBut soI did not Ido so because of the fear of God |
| 5:16 |
YeaI also Iheld continuedto in the work ofon this wall neitherand boughtacquired weno any land:; and all my servants were gathered thitherthere untofor the work |
| 5:17 |
Moreover there were at my table ofa thehundred Jews and thefifty rulersmen aJews hundred and fiftyofficials men besides those thatwho came untoto us from among the nations thatwhich were round about us |
| 5:18 |
Now that which was prepared for one day was one ox and six choice sheep; also fowls likewise were prepared for me and onceevery in ten days storeskins of allwine sortsin ofabundance; wine: yet forwith all this I demandeddid not demand the breadfood allowance of the governor because the bondageservitude was heavy upon this people |
| 5:19 |
Remember untofor memy good O my God for good all that I have done for this people |
| 6:1 |
Now it came to pass when it was reported to SanballatSanbal′lat and TobiahTobi′ah and to Geshem the ArabianArab and untoto the rest of our enemies that I had buildedbuilt the wall and that there was no breach left thereinin thoughit evenalthough untoup to that time I had not set up the doors in the gates |
| 6:2 |
thatSanbal′lat Sanballat and Geshem sent untoto me saying Come and let us meet together in one of the villages in the plain of Ono But they thoughtintended to do me mischiefharm |
| 6:3 |
And I sent messengers untoto them saying I am doing a great work soand that I cannot come down: whyWhy should the work ceasestop whilstwhile I leave it and come down to you |
| 6:4 |
And they sent untoto me four times afterin this sort;way and I answered them afterin the same manner |
| 6:5 |
ThenIn sentthe Sanballatsame hisway servantSanbal′lat untofor methe infifth liketime mannersent thehis fifthservant timeto me with an open letter in his hand |
| 6:6 |
whereinIn it was written It is reported among the nations and GashmuGeshem saithalso says it that thouyou and the Jews thinkintend to rebel; forthat whichis causewhy thouyou artare building the wall:; and thouyou wouldestwish beto become their king according to thesethis wordsreport |
| 6:7 |
And thouyou hasthave also appointedset up prophets to preachproclaim ofconcerning theeyou atin Jerusalem saying There is a king in Judah: andAnd now shall it will be reported to the king according to these words ComeSo now thereforecome and let us take counsel together |
| 6:8 |
Then I sent untoto him saying ThereNo are no such things done as thouyou sayestsay buthave thoubeen feignestdone for you are inventing them out of thineyour own heartmind |
| 6:9 |
For they all wouldwanted haveto madefrighten us afraidthinking saying Their hands shallwill bedrop weakened from the work thatand it bewill not be done But now O God strengthen thou my hands |
| 6:10 |
AndNow when I went untointo the house of ShemaiahShemai′ah the son of DelaiahDelai′ah the son of MehetabelMehet′abel who was shut up; and he said Let us meet together in the house of God within the temple and let us shutclose the doors of the temple:; for they willare comecoming to slaykill thee;you yeaat in the night will they comeare coming to slaykill theeyou |
| 6:11 |
AndBut I said Should such a man as I flee andAnd whowhat isman there that being such as I wouldcould go into the temple toand savelive his life I will not go in |
| 6:12 |
And I discernedunderstood and losaw that God had not sent him; but he had pronounced thisthe prophecy against me: andbecause TobiahTobi′ah and SanballatSanbal′lat had hired him |
| 6:13 |
For this causepurpose he was he hired that I should be afraid and doact soin this way and sin and thatso they mightcould havegive matterme for an evil reportname thatin theyorder mightto reproachtaunt me |
| 6:14 |
Remember Tobi′ah and Sanbal′lat O my God Tobiah and Sanballat according to these theirthings worksthat they did and also the prophetess NoadiahNo adi′ah and the rest of the prophets thatwho wouldwanted haveto putmake me in fearafraid |
| 6:15 |
So the wall was finished inon the twenty and fifth day of the month Elul in fifty and two days |
| 6:16 |
And it came to pass when all our enemies heard thereofof thatit all the nations thatround were about us fearedwere afraid and werefell muchgreatly cast down in their own eyesesteem; for they perceived that this work washad wroughtbeen accomplished with the help of our God |
| 6:17 |
Moreover in those days the nobles of Judah sent many letters untoto TobiahTobi′ah and theTobi′ahs letters of Tobiah came untoto them |
| 6:18 |
For there were many in Judah swornwere untobound by oath to him because he was the son in law of ShecaniahShecani′ah the son of Arah;: and his son JehohananJehoha′nan had taken the daughter of MeshullamMeshul′lam the son of BerechiahBerechi′ah toas his wife |
| 6:19 |
Also they spakespoke of his good deeds beforein memy presence and reported my words to him And TobiahTobi′ah sent letters to putmake me in fearafraid |
| 7:1 |
Now it came to pass when the wall washad been built and I had set up the doors and the portersgatekeepers and the singers and the Levites werehad been appointed |
| 7:2 |
that I gave my brother HananiHana′ni and HananiahHanani′ah the governor of the castle charge over Jerusalem; for he was a more faithful man and feared God abovefearing man than many |
| 7:3 |
And I said untoto them Let not the gates of Jerusalem be opened until the sun beis hot; and while they standare onstill standing guard let them shut the doors and bar yethe them:doors andAppoint appointguards watchesfrom ofamong the inhabitants of Jerusalem everyeach oneto in his watchstation and everyeach oneopposite tohis beown over against his house |
| 7:4 |
NowThe the city was wide and large; but the people within it were few therein and theno houses werehad notbeen buildedbuilt |
| 7:5 |
AndThen my God put it into my heartmind to gatherassemble together the nobles and the rulersofficials and the people thatto they might be reckonedenrolled by genealogy And I found the book of the genealogy of themthose thatwho came up at the first and I found written thereinin it: |

| 8:1 |
And all the people gathered themselves together as one man into the broadsquare place that was before the waterWater gateGate; and they spaketold unto Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses which Jehovahthe Lord had commandedgiven to Israel |
| 8:2 |
And Ezra the priest brought the law before the assembly both men and women and all thatwho could hear with understanding uponon the first day of the seventh month |
| 8:3 |
And he read thereinfrom beforeit facing the broadsquare place that was before the waterWater gateGate from early morning until midday in the presence of the men and the women and of those thatwho could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive untoto the book of the law |
| 8:4 |
And Ezra the scribe stood uponon a wooden pulpit of wood which they had made for the purpose; and beside him stood MattithiahMattithi′ah and Shema andAnai′ah AnaiahUri′ah andHilki′ah Uriah and HilkiahMa andasei′ah Maaseiah on his right hand; and onPedai′ah hisMish′a leftel handMalchi′jah PedaiahHashum andHash Mishaelbad′danah andZechari′ah Malchijah and HashumMeshul′lam andon Hashbaddanahhis Zechariahleft andhand Meshullam |

And Ezra blessed Jehovahthe Lord the great God; and all the people answered Amen Amen with the lifting up of their hands:; and they bowed their heads and worshippedworshiped Jehovahthe Lord with their faces to the ground |
| 8:7 |
Also Jeshua and Bani andSherebi′ah Sherebiah Jamin Akkub ShabbethaiShab′bethai HodiahHodi′ah MaaseiahMa Kelitaasei′ah AzariahKeli′ta JozabadAzari′ah Jo′zabad Hanan PelaiahPelai′ah and the Levites causedhelped the people to understand the law: andwhile the people stoodremained in their placeplaces |
| 8:8 |
And they read infrom the book infrom the law of God distinctlyclearly; and they gave the sense so that theythe people understood the reading |
| 8:9 |
And NehemiahNehemi′ah who was the governor and Ezra the priest theand scribe and the Levites thatwho taught the people said untoto all the people This day is holy untoto Jehovahthe Lord your God; mourndo not normourn or weep For all the people wept when they heard the words of the law |
| 8:10 |
Then he said untoto them Go your way eat the fat and drink the sweet wine and send portions untoto him for whom nothing is prepared; for this day is holy untoto our Lord:; neitherand do not be ye grieved; for the joy of Jehovahthe Lord is your strength |

And they found it written in the law how that Jehovahthe Lord had commanded by Moses that the childrenpeople of Israel should dwell in booths induring the feast of the seventh month; |
| 8:15 |
and that they should publish and proclaim in all their citiestowns and in Jerusalem saying Go forthout untoto the mounthills and fetchbring olive branches andof branchesolive of wild olive and myrtle branches and palm branches and branchesother ofleafy thick trees to make booths as it is written |

| 8:17 |
And all the assembly of themthose thatwho werehad comereturned againfrom out of the captivity made booths and dwelt in the booths:; for sincefrom the days of Jeshua the son of Nun untoto that day had not the childrenpeople of Israel had not done so And there was very great gladnessrejoicing |

AlsoAnd day by day from the first day untoto the last day he read infrom the book of the law of God AndThey they kept the feast seven days; and on the eighth day there was a solemn assembly according untoto the ordinance |
| 9:1 |
Now inon the twenty and fourth day of this month the childrenpeople of Israel were assembled with fasting and within sackcloth and with earth upon themtheir heads |
| 9:2 |
And the seedIsraelites of Israel separated themselves from all foreigners and stood and confessed their sins and the iniquities of their fathers |
| 9:3 |
And they stood up in their place and read infrom the book of the law of Jehovahthe Lord their God for a fourth part of the day; andfor another fourth partof it they confessedmade confession and worshippedworshiped Jehovahthe Lord their God |
| 9:4 |
ThenUpon stood up upon the stairs of the Levites stood Jeshua and Bani KadmielKad′mi Shebaniahel Shebani′ah Bunni SherebiahSherebi′ah Bani and ChenaniChena′ni; and they cried with a loud voice untoto Jehovahthe Lord their God |
| 9:5 |
Then the Levites Jeshua andKad′miel Kadmiel Bani HashabneiahHashabnei′ah SherebiahSherebi′ah HodiahHodi′ah ShebaniahShebani′ah and PethahiahPethahi′ah said Stand up and bless Jehovahthe Lord your God from everlasting to everlasting; andBlessed blessed be thy glorious name which is exalted above all blessing and praise |
| 9:6 |
And Ezra said: Thou art Jehovahthe evenLord thou alone; thou hast made heaven the heaven of heavens with all their host the earth and all things that areis thereonon it the seas and all that is in them; and thou preservest all of them all; and the host of heaven worshippethworships thee |
| 9:7 |
Thou art Jehovahthe Lord the God who didst choose Abram and broughtestbring him forth out of Ur of the ChaldeesChalde′ans and gavestgive him the name of Abraham; |
| 9:8 |
and foundestthou didst find his heart faithful before thee and madestdidst amake covenant with him the covenant to give to his descendants the land of the Canaanite the Hittite the Amorite and the PerizzitePer′izzite and the JebusiteJeb′usite and the GirgashiteGir′gashite; toand givethou it unto his seed and hast performedfulfilled thy words;promise for thou art righteous |
| 9:9 |
And thou sawestdidst see the affliction of our fathers in Egypt and heardesthear their cry byat the Red Sea |
| 9:10 |
and showedstdidst perform signs and wonders uponagainst Pharaoh and on all his servants and on all the people of his land; for thou knewest that they dealtacted proudlyinsolently against themour fathers; and thou didst get thee a name as it is to this day |
| 9:11 |
And thou didst divide the sea before them so that they went through the midst of the sea on the dry land; and their pursuers thou didst cast their pursuers into the depths as a stone into the mighty waters |
| 9:12 |
MoreoverBy in a pillar of cloud thou leddestdidst lead them byin the day; and inby a pillar of fire byin the night to givelight for them light in the way whereinin which they should go |
| 9:13 |
Thou camestdidst come down also upon mountMount Sinai and spakestspeak with them from heaven and gavestgive them right ordinances and true laws good statutes and commandments |
| 9:14 |
and madestthou didst make known untoto them thy holy sabbath and commandedstcommand them commandments and statutes and a law by Moses thy servant |
| 9:15 |
andThou gavestdidst give them bread from heaven for their hunger and broughtestbring forth water for them outfrom of the rock for their thirst and commandedstthou themdidst thattell theythem shouldto go in to possess the land which thou hadst sworn to give them |
| 9:16 |
But they and our fathers dealtacted proudlypresumptuously and hardenedstiffened their neck and hearkeneddid not toobey thy commandments; |
| 9:17 |
andthey refused to obey neitherand were not mindful of thythe wonders thatwhich thou didst perform among them; but hardenedthey stiffened their neck and in their rebellion appointed a captainleader to return to their bondage in Egypt But thou art a God ready to pardonforgive gracious and merciful slow to anger and abundantabounding in lovingkindnesssteadfast love and forsookestdidst not forsake them not |
| 9:18 |
YeaEven when they had made themfor themselves a molten calf and said This is thyyour God thatwho brought theeyou up out of Egypt and had wroughtcommitted great provocations;blasphemies |
| 9:19 |
yet thou in thy manifoldgreat mercies forsookestdidst not forsake them not in the wilderness:; the pillar of cloud departedwhich notled fromthem overin themthe byway daydid tonot leaddepart from them inby theday way;nor neither the pillar of fire by night towhich showlighted for them light and the way whereinby which they should go |
| 9:20 |
Thou gavest also thy good Spirit to instruct them and withheldestdidst not withhold thy manna from their mouth and gavest them water for their thirst |
| 9:21 |
YeaForty forty years didst thou sustain them in the wilderness and they lacked nothing; their clothes waxeddid not oldwear out and their feet swelleddid not swell |
| 9:22 |
MoreoverAnd thou gavestdidst give them kingdoms and peoples whichand thou didst allot afterto theirthem portions:every corner; so they possessedtook thepossession land of Sihon even the land of theSihon king of Heshbon and the land of Og king of Bashan |
| 9:23 |
TheirThou childrendidst alsomultiply multipliedsttheir thoudescendants as the stars of heaven and broughtestthou didst bring them into the land concerning which thou didsthadst saytold to their fathers thatto theyenter shouldand go in to possess it |
| 9:24 |
So the childrendescendants went in and possessed the land and thou subduedstdidst subdue before them the inhabitants of the land the Canaanites and gavestdidst give them into their hands with their kings and the peoples of the land that they might do with them as they would |
| 9:25 |
And they tookcaptured fortified cities and a fatrich land and possessedtook possession of houses full of all good things cisterns hewn out vineyards andolive oliveyardsorchards and fruit trees in abundance:; so they didate eat and were filled and became fat and delighted themselves in thy great goodness |
| 9:26 |
Nevertheless they were disobedient and rebelled against thee and cast thy law behind their back and slewkilled thy prophets thatwho testifiedhad againstwarned them in order to turn them againback untoto thee and they wroughtcommitted great provocationsblasphemies |
| 9:27 |
Therefore thou deliveredstdidst give them into the hand of their adversariesenemies who distressedmade them: suffer; and in the time of their troublesuffering when they cried untoto thee and thou heardestdidst hear them from heaven; and according to thy manifoldgreat mercies thou gavestdidst give them saviourssaviors who saved them outfrom of the hand of their adversariesenemies |
| 9:28 |
But after they had rest they did evil again before thee; thereforeand leftest thou didst abandon them into the hand of their enemies so that they had the dominion over them:; yet when they returnedturned and cried untoto thee thou heardestdidst hear from heaven; and many times thou didst thou deliver them according to thy mercies |
| 9:29 |
andAnd testifiedstthou againstdidst warn them thatin thouorder mightestto bringturn them againback untoto thy law Yet they dealtacted proudlypresumptuously and hearkeneddid not untoobey thy commandments but sinned against thinethy ordinances by the observance of which if a man do he shall live inand themturned anda withdrewstubborn the shoulder and hardenedstiffened their neck and would not hearobey |
| 9:30 |
YetMany many years thou didst thou bear with them and testifiedstdidst againstwarn them by thy Spirit through thy prophets:; yet they would they not give ear: thereforeTherefore gavest thou didst give them into the hand of the peoples of the lands |
| 9:31 |
Nevertheless in thy manifoldgreat mercies thou didst not make aan full end of them noror forsake them; for thou art a gracious and merciful God |
| 9:32 |
Now therefore our God the great theand mighty and the terrible God who keepest covenant and lovingkindnesssteadfast love let not all the travailhardship seem little beforeto thee that hathhas come upon us onupon our kings on our princes and on our priests and on our prophets and on our fathers and on all thy people since the time of the kings of Assyria untountil this day |
| 9:33 |
HowbeitYet thou arthast been just in all that ishas come upon us; for thou hast dealt trulyfaithfully butand we have doneacted wickedly; |
| 9:34 |
neither have our kings our princes our priests norand our fathers have not kept thy law noror hearkenedheeded unto thy commandments and thy testimonieswarnings wherewithwhich thou didst testifygive against them |
| 9:35 |
ForThey theydid have not servedserve thee in their kingdom and in thy great goodness thatwhich thou gavest them and in the large and fatrich land which thou gavestdidst set before them; neitherand turned they did not turn from their wicked works |
| 9:36 |
Behold we are servantsslaves this day; andin as for the land that thou gavest untoto our fathers to eatenjoy theits fruit thereof and theits good thereofgifts behold we are servantsslaves in it |
| 9:37 |
And itits yieldethrich muchyield increasegoes untoto the kings whom thou hast set over us because of our sins:; also they have power also over our bodies and over our cattle at their pleasure and we are in great distress |

And at the dedication of the wall of Jerusalem they sought the Levites outin of all their places to bring them to Jerusalem to keepcelebrate the dedication with gladness both with thanksgivings and with singing with cymbals psalteriesharps and withlyres harps |

also from Beth gilgal and outfrom of the fieldsregion of Geba and Azmaveth:Az′maveth; for the singers had buildedbuilt themfor themselves villages roundaround about Jerusalem |

| 12:43 |
And they offered great sacrifices that day and rejoiced; for God had made them rejoice with great joy; and the women also and the children also rejoiced: soAnd that the joy of Jerusalem was heard even afar off |
| 12:44 |
AndOn on that day men were men appointed over the chambers for the treasuresstores for the heavecontributions offerings for the first fruits and for the tithes to gather into them accordingthe toportions required by the fieldslaw offor the citiespriests and for the portionsLevites appointedaccording byto the lawfields forof the prieststowns; and Levites: for Judah rejoiced forover the priests and for the Levites thatwho waitedministered |
| 12:45 |
And they keptperformed the chargeservice of their God and the chargeservice of the purification andas so did the singers and the portersgatekeepers according to the commandmentcommand of David and of Solomon his son Solomon |
| 12:46 |
For in the days of David and Asaph of old there was a chief of the singers and there were songs of praise and thanksgiving untoto God |
| 12:47 |
And all Israel in the days of ZerubbabelZerub′babel and in the days of NehemiahNehemi′ah gave the daily portions offor the singers and the portersgatekeepers; as every day required: and they set apart that which was for the Levites; and the Levites set apart that which was for the sons of Aaron |
| 13:1 |
On that day they read infrom the book of Moses in the audiencehearing of the people; and thereinin it was found written that anno Ammonite andor a Moabite should notever enter into the assembly of God; for ever |
| 13:2 |
becausefor they metdid not meet the children of Israel with bread and with water but hired Balaam against them to curse them:—yet howbeit our God turned the curse into a blessing |
| 13:3 |
AndWhen itthe camepeople to pass when they had heard the law that they separated from Israel all thethose mixedof multitudeforeign descent |
| 13:4 |
Now before this EliashibEli′ashib the priest who was appointed over the chambers of the house of our God beingand alliedwho untowas Tobiahconnected with Tobi′ah |
| 13:5 |
had prepared for himTobi′ah a greatlarge chamber where aforetime they laidhad previously put the mealcereal offeringsoffering the frankincense and the vessels and the tithes of the grain the new wine and the oil which were given by commandment to the Levites and the singers and thegatekeepers porters; and the heavecontributions offerings for the priests |
| 13:6 |
ButWhile inthis allwas thistaking timeplace I was not atin Jerusalem; for in the twothirty andsecond thirtieth year of ArtaxerxesAr ta xerx′es king of Babylon I went untoto the king: andAnd after certainsome daystime I asked I leave of the king |
| 13:7 |
and I came to Jerusalem and understoodI then discovered the evil that EliashibEli′ashib had done for TobiahTobi′ah in preparing for him a chamber in the courts of the house of God |
| 13:8 |
And itI grievedwas mevery sore:angry thereforeand I castthrew forth all the household stufffurniture of TobiahTobi′ah out of the chamber |
| 13:9 |
Then I commandedgave orders and they cleansed the chambers:; and thitherI brought Iback againthither the vessels of the house of God with the mealcereal offeringsoffering and the frankincense |
| 13:10 |
And I perceivedalso found out that the portions of the Levites had not been given to them; so that the Levites and the singers thatwho did the work werehad fled everyeach one to his field |
| 13:11 |
ThenSo contended I remonstrated with the rulersofficials and said Why is the house of God forsaken And I gathered them together and set them in their placestations |
| 13:12 |
Then brought all Judah brought the tithe of the grain and the new wine and the oil untointo the treasuriesstorehouses |
| 13:13 |
And I madeappointed as treasurers over the treasuriesstorehouses ShelemiahShelemi′ah the priest and Zadok the scribe and Pedai′ah of the Levites Pedaiah: and nextas totheir themassistant was Hanan the son of Zaccur the son of Mattaniah;Mattani′ah for they were counted faithful; and their businessduty was to distribute untoto their brethren |
| 13:14 |
Remember me O my God concerning this and wipe not out my good deeds that I have done for the house of my God and for thehis observances thereofservice |
| 13:15 |
In those days I saw I in Judah some men treading winepresseswine presses on the sabbath and bringing in sheavesheaps of grain and ladingloading them on asses therewith; asand also wine grapes and figs and all mannerkinds of burdens which they brought into Jerusalem on the sabbath day:; and I testifiedwarned against them inon the day whereinwhen they sold victualsfood |
| 13:16 |
ThereMen dwelt men of Tyre also therein who lived in the city brought in fish and all mannerkinds of wares and sold them on the sabbath untoto the childrenpeople of Judah and in Jerusalem |
| 13:17 |
Then I contendedremonstrated with the nobles of Judah and said untoto them What is this evil thing iswhich thisyou thatare yedoing doprofaning and profane the sabbath day |
| 13:18 |
Did not your fathers thusact in this way and did not our God bring all this evil uponon us and uponon this city yetYet yeyou bring more wrath upon Israel by profaning the sabbath |
| 13:19 |
AndWhen it camebegan to passbe thatdark whenat the gates of Jerusalem began to be dark before the sabbath I commanded that the doors should be shut and commandedgave orders that they should not be opened tilluntil after the sabbath: andAnd I set some of my servants set I over the gates that there should no burden might be brought in on the sabbath day |
| 13:20 |
SoThen the merchants and sellers of all kindkinds of wares lodged withoutoutside Jerusalem once or twice |
| 13:21 |
ThenBut I testifiedwarned against them and said untoto them Why do you lodge yebefore about the wall ifIf yeyou do so again I will lay hands on you From that time forthon came they nodid morenot come on the sabbath |
| 13:22 |
And I commanded the Levites that they should purify themselves and that they should come and keepguard the gates to sanctifykeep the sabbath day holy Remember untothis mealso in my favor O my God this also and spare me according to the greatness of thy lovingkindnesssteadfast love |
| 13:23 |
In those days also I saw I the Jews thatwho had married women of Ashdod of Ammon and of Moab:; |
| 13:24 |
and half of their children spakespoke half in the speechlanguage of Ashdod and they could not speak in the Jews language butof accordingJudah tobut the language of each people |
| 13:25 |
And I contended with them and cursed them and smotebeat certainsome of them and pluckedpulled offout their hair; and I made them sweartake byoath in the name of God saying YeYou shall not give your daughters untoto their sons noror take their daughters for your sons or for yourselves |
| 13:26 |
Did not Solomon king of Israel sin byon theseaccount thingsof yetsuch amongwomen Among the many nations there was there no king like him and he was beloved ofby his God and God made him king over all Israel:; nevertheless evenforeign himwomen didmade foreigneven womenhim cause to sin |
| 13:27 |
Shall we then hearkenlisten untoto you toand do all this great evil toand trespassact treacherously against our God inby marrying foreign women |
| 13:28 |
And one of the sons of JoiadaJehoi′ada the son of EliashibEli′ashib the high priest was the son in law toof SanballatSanbal′lat the Horonite:Hor′onite; therefore I chased him from me |
| 13:29 |
Remember them O my God because they have defiled the priesthood and the covenant of the priesthood and of the Levites |
| 13:30 |
Thus I cleansed I them from alleverything foreignersforeign and appointedI chargesestablished forthe duties of the priests and for the Levites everyeach one in his work; |
| 13:31 |
and I provided for the wood offering at appointed times appointed and for the first fruits Remember me O my God for good |
