SoThe the priests and the Levites and some of the people lived in Jerusalem and theits singersvicinity; and the porterssingers the gatekeepers and the Nethinimtemple dweltservants lived in their citiestowns and all Israel in their citiestowns |
| 3:1 |
AndWhen when the seventh month wascame come and the childrensons of Israel were in the citiestowns the people gathered themselves together as one man to Jerusalem |
| 3:2 |
Then stoodarose up Jeshua the son of JozadakJo′zadak andwith his brethrenfellow the priests and ZerubbabelZerub′babel the son of ShealtielShe andal′ti el with his brethrenkinsmen and buildedthey built the altar of the God of Israel to offer burnt offerings thereonupon it as it is written in the law of Moses the man of God |
| 3:3 |
AndThey they set the altar uponin its base;place for fear was upon them because of the peoples of the countries:lands and they offered burnt offerings thereonupon untoit Jehovahto eventhe Lord burnt offerings morning and evening |
| 3:4 |
And they kept the feast of tabernaclesbooths as it is written and offered the daily burnt offerings by number according to the ordinance as theeach duty of every day required; |
| 3:5 |
and afterwardafter that the continual burnt offeringofferings and the offerings ofat the new moonsmoon and ofat all the setappointed feasts of Jehovahthe thatLord wereand consecratedthe andofferings of every one thatwho willinglymade offered a freewill offering untoto Jehovahthe Lord |
| 3:6 |
From the first day of the seventh month they began they to offer burnt offerings untoto Jehovah:the butLord But the foundation of the temple of Jehovahthe Lord was not yet laid |
| 3:7 |
TheySo they gave money alsoto unto the masons and to the carpenters; and food and drink and oil untoto themthe ofSido′nians Sidon and tothe themTyrians of Tyre to bring cedar trees from Lebanon to the sea untoto Joppa according to the grant thatwhich they had offrom Cyrus king of Persia |
| 3:8 |
Now in the second year of their coming untoto the house of God at Jerusalem in the second month beganZerub′babel Zerubbabel the son of ShealtielShe al′ti el and Jeshua the son of JozadakJo′zadak andmade a beginning together with the rest of their brethren the priests and the Levites and all theywho thathad were come outto ofJerusalem from the captivity untoThey Jerusalem and appointed the Levites from twenty years old and upward to have the oversight of the work of the house of Jehovahthe Lord |
| 3:9 |
ThenAnd stood Jeshua with his sons and his brethrenkinsmen Kadmieland Kad′mi el and his sons the sons of Judah together totook have the oversight of the workmen in the house of God: along with the sons of HenadadHen′adad withand the Levites their sons and their brethren the Levites kinsmen |
| 3:10 |
And when the builders laid the foundation of the temple of Jehovahthe theyLord set the priests in their apparelvestments came forward with trumpets and the Levites the sons of Asaph with cymbals to praise Jehovahthe afterLord according to the orderdirections of David king of Israel; |
| 3:11 |
Andand they sang oneresponsively to another in praising and giving thanks untoto Jehovahthe sayingLord For he is good for his lovingkindnesssteadfast endurethlove endures for ever toward Israel And all the people shouted with a great shout when they praised Jehovahthe Lord because the foundation of the house of Jehovahthe Lord was laid |
| 3:12 |
But many of the priests and Levites and heads of fathers houses the old men thatwho had seen the first house wept with a loud voice when they saw the foundation of this house wasbeing laid beforethough their eyes wept with a loud voice; and many shouted aloud for joy:; |
| 3:13 |
so that the people could not discerndistinguish the noisesound of the joyful shout of joy from the noisesound of the peoples weeping of the people; for the people shouted with a loudgreat shout and the noisesound was heard afar off |
| 4:1 |
Now when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the childrenreturned ofexiles the captivity were building a temple untoto Jehovahthe Lord the God of Israel; |
| 4:2 |
then they drewapproached nearZerub′babel to Zerubbabel and to the heads of fathers houses and said untoto them Let us build with you; for we seekworship your God as yeyou do; and we sacrificehave untobeen sacrificing to him ever since the days of EsarE′sar haddonhad′don king of Assyria who brought us uphere hither |
| 4:3 |
But ZerubbabelZerub′babel and Jeshua and the rest of the heads of fathers houses ofin Israel said untoto them YeYou have nothing to do with us in building a house untoto our God; but we ourselvesalone together will build untoto Jehovahthe Lord the God of Israel as kingKing Cyrus the king of Persia hathhas commanded us |
| 4:4 |
Then the people of the land weakeneddiscouraged the hands of the people of Judah and troubledmade them inafraid buildingto build |
| 4:5 |
and hired counsellorscounselors against them to frustrate their purpose all the days of Cyrus king of Persia even until the reign of Darius king of Persia |
| 4:6 |
And in the reign of AhasuerusAhasu e′rus in the beginning of his reign they wrote they an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem |
| 4:7 |
And in the days of ArtaxerxesAr wroteta xerx′es Bishlam Mithredathand TabeelMith′redath and Tab′eel and the rest of histheir companionsassociates untowrote Artaxerxesto Ar ta xerx′es king of Persia; and the writing of the letter was written in theAramaic Syrian character and settranslated forth in the Syrian tongue |
| 4:8 |
Rehum the chancellorcommander and ShimshaiShim′shai the scribe wrote a letter against Jerusalem to ArtaxerxesAr ta xerx′es the king inas thisfollows— sort: |

| 4:11 |
Thisthis is thea copy of the letter that they sent—To untoAr Artaxerxesta xerx′es the king: ThyYour servants the men beyondof the province Beyond the River andsend sogreeting forthAnd now |
| 4:12 |
Bebe it known untoto the king that the Jews thatwho came up from theeyou are come to us untohave gone to Jerusalem; theyThey are buildingrebuilding thethat rebellious and thewicked bad city; andthey haveare finishedfinishing the walls and repairedrepairing the foundations |
| 4:13 |
BeNow be it known nowto unto the king that if this city beis buildedrebuilt and the walls finished they will not pay tribute custom or toll and in the endroyal itrevenue will be hurtfulimpaired unto the kings |
| 4:14 |
Now because we eat the salt of the palace and it is not meetfitting for us to seewitness the kings dishonor therefore have we sentsend and certifiedinform the king; |
| 4:15 |
in order that search may be made in the book of the records of thyyour fathers: soYou shaltwill thou find in the book of the records and knowlearn that this city is a rebellious city and hurtful untoto kings and provinces and that theysedition havewas movedstirred seditionup withinin theit samefrom of old time; That forwas whichwhy cause was this city was laid waste |
| 4:16 |
We certifymake known to the king that if this city beis buildedrebuilt and theits walls finished byyou thiswill meansthen thou shalt have no portionpossession beyondin the province Beyond the River |
| 4:17 |
ThenThe king sent the king an answer: untoTo Rehum the chancellorcommander and toShim′shai Shimshai the scribe and to the rest of their companionsassociates thatwho dwelllive in SamariaSamar′ia and in the rest of the countryprovince beyondBeyond the River: Peacegreeting andAnd sonow forth |
| 4:18 |
Thethe letter which yeyou sent untoto us hathhas been plainly read before me |
| 4:19 |
And I decreedmade a decree and search hathhas been made and it ishas been found that this city from of old timehas hathrisen made insurrection against kings and that rebellion and sedition have been made thereinin it |
| 4:20 |
ThereAnd have been mighty kings alsohave been over Jerusalem who have ruled over all the countrywhole beyondprovince Beyond the River; andto whom tribute custom and toll waswere paid unto them |
| 4:21 |
MakeTherefore yemake now a decree tothat cause these men be made to cease and that this city be not buildedrebuilt until a decree shallis be made by me |
| 4:22 |
And take heedcare thatnot yeto be not slack herein:in this matter; why should damage grow to the hurt of the kingsking |
| 4:23 |
Then when the copy of kingKing ArtaxerxesAr ta xerx′es letter was read before Rehum and ShimshaiShim′shai the scribe and their companionsassociates they went in haste to Jerusalem unto the Jews andat madeJerusalem themand to cease by force and power made them cease |
| 4:24 |
Then ceased the work ofon the house of God which is atin Jerusalem stopped; and it ceased until the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia |
| 5:1 |
Now the prophets Haggai the prophet and ZechariahZechari′ah the son of Iddo prophesied untoto the Jews thatwho were in Judah and Jerusalem; in the name of the God of Israel prophesiedwho theywas untoover them |
| 5:2 |
Then roseZerub′babel up Zerubbabel the son of ShealtielShe al′ti el and Jeshua the son of JozadakJo′zadak arose and began to buildrebuild the house of God which is atin Jerusalem; and with them were the prophets of God helping them |
| 5:3 |
At the same time cameTat′tenai tothe themgovernor Tattenaiof the governorprovince beyondBeyond the River and ShetharShe′thar bozenaiboz′enai and their companionsassociates came to them and saidspoke thusto unto them thus Who gave you a decree to build this house and to finish this wallstructure |
| 5:4 |
ThenThey wealso toldasked them after this mannerWhat whatare the names of the men werewho thatare werebuilding making this building |
| 5:5 |
But the eye of their God was upon the elders of the Jews and they did not makestop them cease till thea matterreport should comereach to Darius and then answer should be returned by letter concerning it |
| 5:6 |
The copy of the letter thatwhich TattenaiTat′tenai the governor beyondof the province Beyond the River and ShetharShe′thar bozenaiboz′enai and his companionsassociates the Apharsachitesgovernors who were beyondin the province Beyond the River sent untoto Darius the king; |
| 5:7 |
they sent him a letterreport untoin himwhich wherein was written thusas follows: UntoTo Darius the king all peace |
| 5:8 |
Be it known untoto the king that we went intoto the province of Judah to the house of the great God whichIt is buildedbeing built with greathuge stones and timber is laid in the walls; and this work goethgoes on withdiligently diligence and prosperethprospers in their hands |
| 5:9 |
Then we asked we those elders and saidspoke untoto them thus Who gave you a decree to build this house and to finish this wallstructure |
| 5:10 |
We also asked them their names alsofor toyour certifyinformation thee that we might write down the names of the men that were at thetheir head of them |
| 5:11 |
And thusthis theywas returnedtheir usreply answerto sayingus: We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth and we are buildingrebuilding the house that was buildedbuilt these many years ago which a great king of Israel buildedbuilt and finished |
| 5:12 |
But afterbecause that our fathers had provokedangered the God of heaven unto wrath he gave them into the hand of NebuchadnezzarNebuchadnez′zar king of Babylon the ChaldeanChalde′an who destroyed this house and carried away the people awayto intoBabylonia Babylon |
| 5:13 |
ButHowever in the first year of Cyrus king of Babylon Cyrus the king made a decree tothat build this house of God should be rebuilt |
| 5:14 |
And the gold and silver vessels also of the house of God which NebuchadnezzarNebuchadnez′zar tookhad taken out of the temple that was in Jerusalem and brought into the temple of Babylon thosethese did Cyrus the king taketook out of the temple of Babylon and they were delivered untoto one whose name was SheshbazzarShesh baz′zar whom he had made governor; |
| 5:15 |
and he said untoto him Take these vessels go and put them in the temple thatwhich is in Jerusalem and let the house of God be buildedrebuilt inon its placesite |
| 5:16 |
Then camethis theShesh samebaz′zar Sheshbazzarcame and laid the foundations of the house of God which is in Jerusalem:; and sincefrom that time even until now hath it has been in building and yet it is not completedyet finished |
| 5:17 |
NowTherefore therefore if it seem good to the king let theresearch be search made in the kingsroyal treasurearchives house which is there atin Babylon whetherto itsee bewhether so that a decree was madeissued ofby Cyrus the king tofor buildthe rebuilding of this house of God atin Jerusalem; andAnd let the king send us his pleasure toin us concerning this matter |
| 6:1 |
Then Darius the king made a decree and search was made in Babylonia in the house of the archives where the treasuresdocuments were laidstored up in Babylon |
| 6:2 |
And therein wasEcbat′ana found at Achmetha in the palacecapital thatwhich is in the province of Media a rollscroll andwas thereinfound on which this was thus written: forA a record: |

| 8:14 |
AndOf of the sons of BigvaiBig′vai Uthai and Zabbud;Zaccur and with them seventy malesmen |
| 8:15 |
And I gathered them together to the river that runnethruns to Ahava;Aha′va and there we encamped three days: andAs I viewedreviewed the people and the priests andI found there none of the sons of Levi |
| 8:16 |
Then I sent I for EliezerElie′zer for Ariel forShemai′ah ShemaiahElna′than and for Elnathan and for Jarib andElna′than for Elnathan and for Nathan andZechari′ah for Zechariah and forMeshul′lam Meshullamleading chief men; alsoand for JoiaribJoi′arib and forElna′than Elnathan who were teachersmen of insight |
| 8:17 |
Andand I sent them forthto unto Iddo the chiefleading man at the place Casiphia;Casiphi′a andtelling I told them what theyto should say untoto Iddo and his brethren the Nethinimtemple servants at the place CasiphiaCasiphi′a thatnamely theyto shouldsend bring unto us ministers for the house of our God |
| 8:18 |
And accordingby to the good hand of our God upon us they brought us a man of discretion of the sons of Mahli the son of Levi the son of Israel; andnamely SherebiahSherebi′ah with his sons and hiskinsmen brethren eighteen; |
| 8:19 |
andalso HashabiahHashabi′ah and with him JeshaiahJeshai′ah of the sons of MerariMerar′i with his brethrenkinsmen and their sons twenty; |
| 8:20 |
besides two hundred and twenty of the Nethinimtemple servants whom David and thehis princesofficials had givenset forapart theto serviceattend of the Levites twoThese hundredwere and twenty Nethinim: all of them were mentioned by name |
| 8:21 |
Then I proclaimed a fast there at the river AhavaAha′va that we might humble ourselves before our God to seek offrom him a straight way for usourselves and for our littlechildren ones and for all our substancegoods |
| 8:22 |
For I was ashamed to ask of the king for a band of soldiers and horsemen to helpprotect us against the enemy inon theour way; becausesince we had spokentold unto the king saying The hand of our God is for good upon all them that seek him forand good;the but his power andof his wrath is against all them that forsake him |
| 8:23 |
So we fasted and besought our God for this: and he waslistened entreatedto ofour usentreaty |
| 8:24 |
Then I set apart twelve of the chiefsleading of the priests: evenSherebi′ah SherebiahHashabi′ah Hashabiah and ten of their brethrenkinsmen with them |
| 8:25 |
andAnd I weighed untoout to them the silver and the gold and the vessels even the offering for the house of our God which the king and his counsellorscounselors and his princeslords and all Israel there present had offered:; |
| 8:26 |
I weighed out into their hand six hundred and fifty talents of silver and silver vessels worth a hundred talents; ofand gold a hundred talents; of gold |
| 8:27 |
and twenty bowls of gold ofworth a thousand darics; and two vessels of fine bright brassbronze as precious as gold |
| 8:28 |
And I said untoto them YeYou are holy untoto Jehovahthe Lord and the vessels are holy; and the silver and the gold are a freewill offering untoto Jehovahthe Lord the God of your fathers |
| 8:29 |
WatchGuard yethem and keep them until yeyou weigh them before the chiefschief of the priests and the Levites and the princesheads of the fathers houses ofin Israel at Jerusalem inwithin the chambers of the house of Jehovahthe Lord |
| 8:30 |
So the priests and the Levites receivedtook over the weight of the silver and the gold and the vessels to bring them to Jerusalem untoto the house of our God |
| 8:31 |
Then we departed from the river AhavaAha′va on the twelfth day of the first month to go untoto Jerusalem:; and the hand of our God was upon us and he delivered us from the hand of the enemy and thefrom lierambushes in wait by the way |
| 8:32 |
AndWe we came to Jerusalem and abode there we remained three days |
| 8:33 |
AndOn on the fourth day within the house of our God the silver and the gold and the vessels were weighed ininto the househands of ourMer′emoth God into the handpriest of Meremoth the son of UriahUri′ah the priest and with him was EleazarElea′zar the son of Phinehas:Phin′ehas and with them waswere Jozabadthe Levites Jo′zabad the son of Jeshua and NoadiahNo adi′ah the son of BinnuiBin′nui the Levites— |
| 8:34 |
theThe whole bywas numbercounted and byweighed weight: and all the weight wasof writteneverything atwas that timerecorded |
| 8:35 |
TheAt childrenthat oftime thethose captivitywho thathad were come outfrom ofcaptivity exilethe returned exiles offered burnt offerings untoto the God of Israel twelve bullocksbulls for all Israel ninety and six rams seventy and seven lambs twelveand heas goats for a sin offering: twelve he goats; all this was a burnt offering untoto Jehovahthe Lord |
| 8:36 |
AndThey theyalso delivered the kings commissions untoto the kings satraps and to the governors beyondof the province Beyond the River:; and they furtheredaided the people and the house of God |
| 9:1 |
NowAfter when these things werehad been done the princesofficials drewapproached nearme untoand mesaid saying The people of Israel and the priests and the Levites have not separated themselves from the peoples of the lands doingwith according to their abominations evenfrom of the Canaanites the Hittites the PerizzitesPer′izzites the JebusitesJeb′usites the Ammonites the Moabites the Egyptians and the Amorites |
| 9:2 |
For they have taken some of their daughters to be wives for themselves and for their sons; so that the holy seedrace havehas mingledmixed themselvesitself with the peoples of the lands: yeaAnd in this faithlessness the hand of the princesofficials and rulerschief hathmen has been chiefforemost in this trespass |
| 9:3 |
AndWhen when I heard this thing I rent my garmentgarments and my robemantle and pluckedpulled off the hair offrom my head and of my beard and sat downappalled confounded |
| 9:4 |
Then wereall assembledwho unto me every one that trembled at the words of the God of Israel because of the trespassfaithlessness of themthe ofreturned theexiles captivity;gathered andround me while I sat confoundedappalled until the evening oblationsacrifice |
| 9:5 |
And at the evening oblationsacrifice I aroserose up from my humiliationfasting even with my garmentgarments and my robemantle rent; and I fell upon my knees and spread out my hands untoto Jehovahthe Lord my God; |
| 9:6 |
andsaying: I said O my God I am ashamed and blush to lift up my face to thee my God; for our iniquities arehave increasedrisen overhigher than our headheads and our guiltinessguilt ishas grownmounted up untoto the heavens |
| 9:7 |
SinceFrom the days of our fathers to this day we have been exceedingin guiltygreat unto this dayguilt; and for our iniquities have we our kings and our priests have been deliveredgiven into the hand of the kings of the lands to the sword to captivity and to plunderplundering and to confusionutter ofshame face as itat is this day |
| 9:8 |
AndBut now for a littlebrief moment gracefavor hathhas been showedshown fromby Jehovahthe Lord our God to leave us a remnant to escape and to give us a nailsecure inhold within his holy place that our God may lightenbrighten our eyes and givegrant us a little reviving in our bondage |
| 9:9 |
For we are bondmen; yet our God hathhas not forsaken us in our bondage but hathhas extended lovingkindnessto unto us inhis thesteadfast sightlove ofbefore the kings of Persia to givegrant us asome reviving to set up the house of our God and to repair theits ruins thereof and to give us aprotection wall in JudahJudea and in Jerusalem |
| 9:10 |
And now O our God what shall we say after this forFor we have forsaken thy commandments |
| 9:11 |
which thou hastdidst commandedcommand by thy servants the prophets saying The land unto which yeyou goare entering to possesstake possession of it is ana land unclean landwith through the uncleannesspollutions of the peoples of the lands throughwith their abominations which have filled it from one end to anotherend with their filthiness:uncleanness |
| 9:12 |
nowTherefore therefore give not your daughters untoto their sons neither take their daughters untofor your sons norand never seek their peace or their prosperity for ever; that yeyou may be strong and eat the good of the land and leave it for an inheritance to your children for ever |
| 9:13 |
And after all that ishas come upon us for our evil deeds and for our great guilt seeing that thou our God hast punished us less than our iniquities deservedeserved and hast given us such a remnant as this |
| 9:14 |
shall we again break thy commandments again and joinintermarry in affinity with the peoples thatwho dopractice these abominations wouldestWouldst thou not thou be angry with us till thou hadstwouldst consumedconsume us so that there should be no remnant nor any to escape |
| 9:15 |
O JehovahLord the God of Israel thou art righteous;just for we are left a remnant that ishas escaped as itat is this day: beholdBehold we are before thee in our guiltiness;guilt for none can stand before thee because of this |
| 10:1 |
NowWhile while Ezra prayed and made confession weeping and casting himself down before the house of God there was gathered together unto him out of Israel a very great assembly of men and women and children gathered to him out of Israel; for the people wept verybitterly sore |
| 10:2 |
And ShecaniahShecani′ah the son of JehielJehi′el one of the sons of Elam answeredaddressed and said unto Ezra: We have trespassedbroken againstfaith with our God and have married foreign women offrom the peoples of the land: yetbut even now there is hope for Israel concerningin spite of this thing |
| 10:3 |
NowTherefore therefore let us make a covenant with our God to put away all thethese wives and suchtheir aschildren are born of them according to the counsel of my lord and of those thatwho tremble at the commandment of our God; and let it be done according to the law |
| 10:4 |
Arise; for theit matteris belongethyour untotask thee and we are with thee:you; be ofstrong good courage and do it |
| 10:5 |
Then Ezra arose Ezra and made the chiefsleading of the priests theand Levites and all Israel totake swearoath that they would do accordingas tohad thisbeen wordsaid So they swaretook the oath |
| 10:6 |
Then Ezra rosewithdrew up from before the house of God and went intoto the chamber of JehohananJehoha′nan the son of Eliashib:Eli′ashib andwhere when he camespent thitherthe henight didneither eateating no bread nor drinkdrinking water; for he mournedwas becausemourning ofover the trespassfaithlessness of them of the captivityexiles |
| 10:7 |
And theya proclamation was made proclamation throughout Judah and Jerusalem untoto all the childrenreturned ofexiles the captivity that they should gatherassemble themselvesat together unto Jerusalem; |
| 10:8 |
and that whosoeverif cameany one did not come within three days accordingby toorder the counsel of the princesofficials and the elders all his substanceproperty should be forfeited and he himself separatedbanned from the assemblycongregation of the captivityexiles |
| 10:9 |
Then all the men of Judah and Benjamin gatheredassembled themselvesat together unto Jerusalem within the three days; it was the ninth month on the twentieth day of the month; andAnd all the people sat in the broadopen placesquare before the house of God trembling because of this matter and forbecause of the greatheavy rain |
| 10:10 |
And Ezra the priest stood up and said untoto them YeYou have trespassed and have married foreign women toand increaseso increased the guilt of Israel |
| 10:11 |
Now thereforethen make confession untoto Jehovahthe Lord the God of your fathers and do his pleasurewill; and separate yourselves from the peoples of the land and from the foreign womenwives |
| 10:12 |
Then all the assembly answered and said with a loud voice AsIt thouis hastso; saidwe concerningmust usdo soas mustyou wehave dosaid |
| 10:13 |
But the people are many and it is a time of muchheavy rain; and we arecannot notstand ablein tothe standopen without:Nor neither is this a work offor one day or for two; for we have greatly transgressed in this matter |
| 10:14 |
Let now our princesofficials bestand appointed for all the whole assembly; and let all them that are in our cities thatwho have marriedtaken foreign womenwives come at appointed times and with them the elders and judges of every city andtill the judges thereof until the fierce wrath of our God beover turned from us until this matter be despatchedaverted from us |
| 10:15 |
Only Jonathan the son of AsahelAs′ahel and JahzeiahJahzei′ah the son of Tikvah stoodopposed up against this matter: and MeshullamMeshul′lam and ShabbethaiShab′bethai the Levite helpedsupported them |
| 10:16 |
AndThen the childrenreturned ofexiles the captivity did so And Ezra the priest withselected certainmen heads of fathers houses afteraccording to their fathers houses andeach all of them designated by theirname namesOn were set apart; and they sat down in the first day of the tenth month they sat down to examine the matter; |
