| 1:2 |
Vanity of vanities saithsays the Preacher; vanity of vanities allAll is vanity |
| 1:3 |
What profitdoes hath man ofgain by all histhe labortoil whereinat which he laborethtoils under the sun |
| 1:4 |
OneA generation goethgoes and anothera generation cometh;comes but the earth abidethremains for ever |
| 1:5 |
The sun alsorises ariseth and the sun goethgoes down and hastethhastens to itsthe place where it ariseth rises |
| 1:6 |
The wind goethblows towardto the south and turnethgoes aboutround untoto the north; itround turnethand aboutround continuallygoes in its course and the wind returnethand againon to its circuits the wind returns |
| 1:7 |
All thestreams rivers run intoto the sea yetbut the sea is not full; untoto the place whitherwhere the riversstreams goflow thitherthere they goflow again |
| 1:8 |
All things are full of weariness; a man cannot utter it:; the eye is not satisfied with seeing nor the ear filled with hearing |
| 1:9 |
ThatWhat whichhas hath been is thatwhat whichwill shall be; and thatwhat whichhas hath been done is thatwhat whichwill shall be done:; and there is nonothing new thing under the sun |
| 1:10 |
Is there a thing whereofof which it mayis be said See this is new itIt hathhas been longalready ago in the ages which were before us |
| 1:11 |
There is no remembrance of the former generations;things neithernor shallwill there be any remembrance of thelater latterthings generationsyet that are to comehappen among those thatwho shall come after |
| 1:12 |
I the Preacher washave been king over Israel in Jerusalem |
| 1:13 |
And I applied my heartmind to seek and to search out by wisdom concerning all that is done under heaven:; it is aan soreunhappy travailbusiness that God hathhas given to the sons of men to be exercisedbusy therewithwith |
| 1:14 |
I have seen alleverything the works that areis done under the sun; and behold all is vanity and a striving after wind |
| 1:15 |
ThatWhat which is crooked cannot be made straight; and thatwhat which is wantinglacking cannot be numbered |
| 1:16 |
I communedsaid withto minemyself own heart saying Lo I have gottenacquired me great wisdom abovesurpassing all thatwho were over Jerusalem before me in Jerusalem; yeaand my heartmind hathhas had great experience of wisdom and knowledge |
| 1:17 |
And I applied my heartmind to know wisdom and to know madness and folly: I perceived that this also wasis but a striving after wind |
| 1:18 |
For in much wisdom is much grief;vexation and he thatwho increasethincreases knowledge increasethincreases sorrow |
| 2:1 |
I said into mymyself heart Come now I will provemake theea withtest mirthof pleasure; therefore enjoy pleasure:yourself andBut behold this also was vanity |
| 2:2 |
I said of laughter It is mad; and of mirthpleasure What doethuse is it |
| 2:3 |
I searched inwith my heartmind how to cheer my fleshbody with wine —my heartmind yetstill guiding me with wisdom —and how to lay hold on folly till I might see what it was good for the sons of men thatto they should do under heaven allduring the few days of their life |
| 2:4 |
I made me great works; I buildedbuilt me houses; Iand planted mevineyards vineyardsfor myself; |
| 2:5 |
I made memyself gardens and parks and I planted trees in them of all kinds of fruit; trees |
| 2:6 |
I made memyself pools offrom waterwhich to water therefrom the forest whereof growing trees were reared; |
| 2:7 |
I bought menmale servants and maidfemale servantsslaves and had servantsslaves who were born in my house; also I had also great possessions of herds and flocks abovemore allthan thatany werewho had been before me in Jerusalem; |
| 2:8 |
I also gathered mefor alsomyself silver and gold and the treasure of kings and of the provinces; I gatgot mesingers both men singers and women singers and themany delightsconcubines ofmans the sons of men musical instruments and that of all sorts delight |
| 2:9 |
So I wasbecame great and increasedsurpassed more than all thatwho were before me in Jerusalem:; also my wisdom remained with me |
| 2:10 |
And whatsoeverwhatever minemy eyes desired I keptdid not keep from them; I withheldkept not my heart from anyno joy;pleasure for my heart rejoicedfound becausepleasure ofin all my labor;toil and this was my portionreward fromfor all my labortoil |
| 2:11 |
Then I lookedconsidered on all the works that my hands had wroughtdone and on the labortoil that I had laboredspent toin do;doing it and behold all was vanity and a striving after wind and there was nonothing profitto be gained under the sun |
| 2:12 |
AndSo I turned myself to beholdconsider wisdom and madness and folly:; for what can the man do thatwho comethcomes after the king evenOnly thatwhat whichhe hathhas beenalready done long ago |
| 2:13 |
Then I saw that wisdom excellethexcels folly as far as light excellethexcels darkness |
| 2:14 |
The wise mansman has his eyes are in his head andbut the fool walkethwalks in darkness:; and yet I perceived that one eventfate happenethcomes to all of them all |
| 2:15 |
Then said I insaid myto heartmyself AsWhat itbefalls happeneth to the fool so will itbefall happenme even to mealso; and why wasthen have I thenbeen moreso very wise ThenAnd said I insaid myto heartmyself that this also is vanity |
| 2:16 |
For of the wise man even as of the fool there is no enduring remembrance for ever; seeing that in the days to come all will have been long forgotten AndHow how doth the wise man diedies evenjust aslike the fool |
| 2:17 |
So I hated life because thewhat work that is wroughtdone under the sun was grievous untoto me; for all is vanity and a striving after wind |
| 2:18 |
And I hated all my labortoil whereinin which I laboredhad toiled under the sun seeing that I must leave it untoto the man thatwho shallwill become after me; |
| 2:19 |
Andand who knowethknows whether he will be a wise man or a fool yetYet he will hebe havemaster ruleof over all myfor laborwhich wherein I havetoiled labored and whereinused Imy havewisdom showed myself wise under the sun This also is vanity |
| 2:20 |
ThereforeSo I turned about toand causegave my heart up to despair concerningover all the labortoil whereinof Imy hadlabors labored under the sun |
| 2:21 |
Forbecause theresometimes is a man whosewho laborhas istoiled with wisdom and with knowledge and withskill skilfulness;must yetleave all to be enjoyed by a man thatwho hathdid not laboredtoil thereinfor shall he leave it for his portion This also is vanity and a great evil |
| 2:22 |
ForWhat whathas hath a man offrom all histhe labortoil and ofstrain thewith strivingwhich of his heart wherein he laborethtoils underbeneath the sun |
| 2:23 |
For all his days are butfull sorrowsof pain and his travailwork is griefa vexation; yea even in the night his heartmind takethdoes nonot rest This also is vanity |
| 2:24 |
There is nothing better for a man than that he should eat and drink and makefind hisenjoyment soul enjoy good in his labortoil This also I saw that it is from the hand of God; |
| 2:25 |
Forfor apart from him who can eat or who can have enjoyment more than I |
| 2:26 |
For to the man thatwho pleasethpleases him God givethgives wisdom and knowledge and joy; but to the sinner he givethgives travailthe towork gatherof gathering and toheaping heaponly upto that he may give to himone thatwho pleasethpleases God This also is vanity and a striving after wind |
| 3:1 |
For everything there is a season and a time for every purposematter under heaven: |
| 3:2 |
a time to be born and a time to die; a time to plant and a time to pluck up thatwhat which is planted; |
| 3:9 |
What profitgain hathhas hethe thatworker workethfrom inhis that wherein he laboreth toil |
| 3:10 |
I have seen the travailbusiness whichthat God hathhas given to the sons of men to be exercisedbusy therewithwith |
| 3:11 |
He hathhas made everything beautiful in its time:; also he hathhas setput eternity ininto theirmans heartmind yet so that manhe cannot find out thewhat work that God hathhas done from the beginning even to the end |
| 3:12 |
I know that there is nothing better for them than to rejoicebe happy and toenjoy dothemselves goodas so long as they live; |
| 3:13 |
And also that everyit is Gods gift to man that every one should eat and drink and enjoytake goodpleasure in all his labortoil is the gift of God |
| 3:14 |
I know that whatsoeverwhatever God doethdoes itendures shall be for ever:; nothing can be putadded to it nor anything taken from it; and God hathhas donemade it so in order that men should fear before him |
| 3:15 |
That which is hathalready has been long ago; and that which is to be hathalready longhas ago been:; and God seekethseeks againwhat thathas whichbeen isdriven passed away |
| 3:16 |
AndMoreover moreover I saw under the sun that in the place of justice thateven wickednessthere was there;wickedness and in the place of righteousness thateven wickednessthere was therewickedness |
| 3:17 |
I said in my heart God will judge the righteous and the wicked; for therehe ishas appointed a time there for every purposematter and for every work |
| 3:18 |
I said in my heart Itwith isregard becauseto of the sons of men that God mayis provetesting them andto thatshow theythem may see that they themselves are but as beasts |
| 3:19 |
For thatthe whichfate befallethof the sons of men befallethand beasts;the evenfate oneof thingbeasts befallethis them:the same; as the one diethdies so diethdies the other; yeaThey theyall have allthe onesame breath; and man hathhas no preeminenceadvantage aboveover the beasts:; for all is vanity |
| 3:20 |
All go untoto one place; all are offrom the dust and all turn to dust again |
| 3:21 |
Who knowethknows whether the spirit of man whethergoes it goeth upward and the spirit of the beast whethergoes itdown goeth downward to the earth |
| 3:22 |
WhereforeSo I saw that there is nothing better than that a man should rejoiceenjoy in his works;work for that is his portion:lot; for who shallcan bring him back to see what shallwill be after him |
| 4:1 |
ThenAgain I returned and saw all the oppressions that are donepracticed under the sun: andAnd behold the tears of suchthe as were oppressed and they had no comforter;one andto oncomfort them On the side of their oppressors there was power; butand theythere hadwas no comforterone to comfort them |
| 4:2 |
WhereforeAnd I praisedthought the dead thatwho haveare beenalready long dead more fortunate than the living thatwho are yetstill alive; |
| 4:3 |
yeabut better than them both didis Ihe esteemwho himhas that hath not yet been whoand hathhas not seen the evil workdeeds that isare done under the sun |
| 4:4 |
Then I saw that all labortoil and everyall skilfulskill in work thatcome forfrom this a manmans isenvy envied of his neighbor This also is vanity and a striving after wind |
| 4:5 |
The fool foldethfolds his hands together and eatetheats his own flesh |
| 4:6 |
Better is a handful withof quietness than two handfulshands withfull laborof toil and a striving after wind |
| 4:7 |
ThenAgain I returned and saw vanity under the sun: |
| 4:8 |
Therea isperson onewho thathas isno aloneone andeither he hath not a second; yea he hath neither son noror brother; yet there is there no end ofto all his labortoil neitherand are his eyes are never satisfied with riches Forso whomthat thenhe saithnever heasks doFor whom am I labortoiling and deprivedepriving mymyself soul of goodpleasure This also is vanity yeaand itan isunhappy a sore travail business |
| 4:9 |
Two are better than one because they have a good reward for their labortoil |
| 4:10 |
For if they fall the one will lift up his fellow; but woe to him thatwho is alone when he fallethfalls and hathhas not another to lift him up |
| 4:11 |
Again if two lie together then they haveare warmthwarm; but how can one be warm alone |
| 4:12 |
And ifthough a man might prevail against himone thatwho is alone two shallwill withstand him; andA a threefold cord is not quickly broken |
| 4:13 |
Better is a poor and wise youth than an old and foolish king who knowethwill notno howlonger totake receiveadvice admonition any more |
| 4:14 |
Foreven outthough ofhe prisonhad hegone camefrom forthprison to bethe king;throne yeaor even in his own kingdom hehad wasbeen born poor |
| 4:15 |
I saw all the living thatwho walkmove about under the sun thatas theywell wereas withthat the youth thewho secondwas thatto stoodstand up in his steadplace; |
| 4:16 |
Therethere was no end of all the people; evenhe ofwas all them over whomall heof was:them yetYet theythose thatwho come afterlater shallwill not rejoice in him Surely this also is vanity and a striving after wind |
| 5:1 |
Keep thyGuard footyour steps when thouyou goestgo to the house of God; for to draw nighnear to hearlisten is better than to giveoffer the sacrifice of fools:; for they knowdo not know that they doare doing evil |
| 5:2 |
Be not rash with thyyour mouth andnor let notyour thy heart be hasty to utter anythinga word before God; for God is in heaven and thouyou upon earth:; therefore let thyyour words be few |
| 5:3 |
For a dream comethcomes with amuch multitude of business and a fools voice with amany multitude of words |
| 5:4 |
When thouyou vowestvow a vow untoto God deferdo not todelay paypaying it; for he hathhas no pleasure in fools: payPay thatwhat whichyou thouvow vowest |
| 5:5 |
BetterIt is itbetter that thouyou shouldestshould not vow than that thouyou shouldestshould vow and not pay |
| 5:6 |
SufferLet not thyyour mouth tolead causeyou thyinto fleshsin toand sin;do neithernot say thou before the angelmessenger that it was ana error:mistake; whereforewhy should God be angry at thyyour voice and destroy the work of thyyour hands |
| 5:7 |
For inwhen the multitude of dreams thereincrease areempty vanitieswords andgrow in many words: but do you fear thou God |
| 5:8 |
If thouyou seestsee thein oppressiona ofprovince the poor oppressed and the violent taking away of justice and righteousnessright inviolently ataken provinceaway marveldo not be amazed at the matter:; for onethe higherhigh thanofficial theis highwatched regardeth;by a higher and there are yet higher thanones theyover them |
| 5:9 |
MoreoverBut thein profitall ofa theking earth is foran all:advantage theto kinga himselfland iswith servedcultivated by the field fields |
| 5:10 |
He thatwho lovethloves silvermoney shallwill not be satisfied with silvermoney; nor he thatwho lovethloves abundancewealth with increasegain: this also is vanity |
| 5:11 |
When goods increase they areincrease increasedwho that eat them; and what advantagegain ishas theretheir to the owner thereofbut saveto thesee beholding of them with his eyes |
| 5:12 |
TheSweet is the sleep of a laboringlaborer man is sweet whether he eateats little or much; but the fulnesssurfeit of the rich will not sufferlet him to sleep |
| 5:13 |
There is a grievous evil which I have seen under the sun: namely riches were kept by thetheir owner thereof to his hurt: |
| 5:14 |
and those riches perishwere bylost evilin adventurea bad venture; and if he hathis begottenfather of a son therebut ishe has nothing in his hand |
| 5:15 |
As he came forth from his mothers womb nakedhe shall he go again naked as he came and shall take nothing for his labortoil which he may carry away in his hand |
| 5:16 |
AndThis this also is a grievous evil: thatjust in all points as he came so shall he go:; and what profitgain hathhas he that he laborethtoiled for the wind |
| 5:17 |
Alland spent all his days also he eateth in darkness and hegrief isin soremuch vexedvexation and hath sickness and wrath resentment |
| 5:18 |
Behold thatwhat which I have seen to be good and to be comelyfitting is for one to eat and to drink and tofind enjoyenjoyment good in all histhe labortoil whereinwith hewhich laborethone toils under the sun all the few days of his life which God hathhas given him: for this is his portionlot |
| 5:19 |
Every man also to whom God hathhas given richeswealth and wealthpossessions and hath given him power to eatenjoy thereofthem and to takeaccept his portionlot and tofind rejoiceenjoyment in his labortoil—this is the gift of God |
| 5:20 |
For he shallwill not much remember the days of his life; because God answerethkeeps him inoccupied thewith joy ofin his heart |
| 6:1 |
There is an evil which I have seen under the sun and it islies heavy upon men: |
| 6:2 |
a man to whom God givethgives riches wealth possessions and honor so that he lackethlacks nothing for his soul of all that he desirethdesires yet God givethdoes not give him not power to eatenjoy thereofthem but ana alienstranger eatethenjoys itthem; this is vanity; and it is ana evilsore diseaseaffliction |
| 6:3 |
If a man begetbegets a hundred children and livelives many years so that the days of his years are many but hishe souldoes be not filledenjoy withlifes good things and moreoveralso hehas have no burial; I say that an untimely birth is better off than he: |
| 6:4 |
forFor it comethcomes ininto vanity and departethgoes ininto darkness and thein darkness its name thereof is covered with darkness; |
| 6:5 |
moreover it hathhas not seen the sun noror known itanything; thisyet hathit finds rest rather than thehe other: |
| 6:6 |
yeaEven though he should live a thousand years twice told and yet enjoy no good —do not all go to the one place |
| 6:7 |
All the labortoil of man is for his mouth and yet thehis appetite is not filledsatisfied |
| 6:8 |
For what advantage hathhas the wise moreman thanover the fool orAnd what hathdoes the poor man thathave knowethwho knows how to walkconduct himself before the living |
| 6:9 |
Better is the sight of the eyes than the wandering of the desire:; this also is vanity and a striving after wind |
| 6:10 |
WhatsoeverWhatever hathhas beencome theto namebe thereofhas wasalready givenbeen longnamed ago; and it is known what man is; neitherand canthat he contendis withnot himable thatto isdispute mightierwith one stronger than he |
| 6:11 |
SeeingThe theremore arewords manythe thingsmore thatvanity increaseand vanity what is man the better |
| 6:12 |
For who knowethknows what is good for man inwhile hishe lifelives all the few days of his vain life which he spendethpasses aslike a shadow forFor who can tell a man what shallwill be after him under the sun |
| 7:1 |
A good name is better than precious oilointment; and the day of death than the day of ones birth |
| 7:2 |
It is better to go to the house of mourning than to go to the house of feasting:; for thatthis is the end of all men; and the living will lay it to his heart |
| 7:3 |
Sorrow is better than laughter; for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made glad |
| 7:5 |
It is better for a man to hear the rebuke of the wise than for a man to hear the song of fools |
| 7:6 |
For as the crackling of thorns under a pot so is the laughter of the fool:fools; this also is vanity |
| 7:7 |
Surely extortionoppression makethmakes the wise man foolish; and a bribe destroyethcorrupts the understanding mind |
| 7:8 |
Better is the end of a thing than theits beginning thereof; and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit |
| 7:9 |
Be not hastyquick in thy spirit to beanger angry; for anger restethlodges in the bosom of fools |
| 7:10 |
Say not thouWhy Whatwere is the cause that the former days were better than these forFor thouit dostis not inquirefrom wiselywisdom concerningthat you ask this |
| 7:11 |
Wisdom is as good aswith an inheritance; yeaan moreadvantage excellentto isthose itwho for them that see the sun |
| 7:12 |
For the protection of wisdom is alike defencethe evenprotection asof money is a defence; butand the excellencyadvantage of knowledge is that wisdom preservethpreserves the life of him thatwho hathhas it |
| 7:13 |
Consider the work of God:; for who can make that straight whichwhat he hathhas made crooked |
| 7:14 |
In the day of prosperity be joyful and in the day of adversity consider; yea God hathhas made the one sideas bywell sideas with the other toso the end that man shouldmay not find out anything that shallwill be after him |
| 7:15 |
AllIn thismy havevain life I have seen ineverything; my days of vanity: there is a righteous man thatwho perishethperishes in his righteousness and there is a wicked man thatwho prolongethprolongs his life in his evil doing |
| 7:16 |
Be not righteous overmuch; neitherand do not make thyselfyourself overwise:; why shouldestshould thouyou destroy thyselfyourself |
| 7:17 |
Be not wicked overmuch wicked neither be thoua foolish:fool; why shouldestshould thouyou die before thyyour time |
| 7:18 |
It is good that thouyou shouldestshould take hold of this; yeaand also from that withdrawwithhold not thyyour hand:; for he thatwho fearethfears God shall come forth from them all |
| 7:19 |
Wisdom isgives a strength to the wise man more than ten rulers that are in a city |
| 7:20 |
Surely there is not a righteous man uponon earth thatwho doethdoes good and sinnethnever not sins |
| 7:21 |
AlsoDo take not give heed untoto all wordsthe things that aremen spokensay lest thouyou hear thyyour servant cursecursing theeyou; |
| 7:22 |
foryour oftentimes also thine own heart knowethknows that thoumany thyselftimes likewiseyou hasthave yourself cursed others |
| 7:23 |
All this I have Itested provedby in wisdom:; I said I will be wise; but it was far from me |
| 7:24 |
That which is is far off and exceedingdeep very deep; who can find it out |
| 7:25 |
I turned about and my heartmind was set to know and to search out and to seek wisdom and the reasonsum of things and to know thatthe wickedness isof folly and thatthe foolishness which is madness |
| 7:26 |
And I findfound more bitter than death the woman whose heart is snares and nets and whose hands are bands:fetters; whosohe pleasethwho pleases God shallescapes escape from her; but the sinner shallis be taken by her |
| 7:27 |
Behold this haveis what I found saithsays the Preacher layingadding one thing to another to find out the account;sum |
| 7:28 |
which my soulmind stillhas seekethsought repeatedly but I have not found: oneOne man among a thousand have I found; but a woman among all thosethese I have I not found |
| 7:29 |
Behold this onlyalone have I found: that God made man upright; but they have sought out many inventionsdevices |
| 8:1 |
Who is aslike the wise man andAnd who knowethknows the interpretation of a thing A mans wisdom makethmakes his face to shine and the hardness of his facecountenance is changed |
| 8:2 |
I counsel thee Keep the kings command and thatbecause inof regardyour ofsacred the oath ofbe Godnot dismayed; |
| 8:3 |
Be not hasty to go outfrom of his presence; persistdo not indelay anwhen evilthe thing:matter is unpleasant for he doethdoes whatsoeverwhatever pleasethhe himpleases |
| 8:4 |
For the kings word hathof power;the king is supreme and who may say untoto him What doestare thouyou doing |
| 8:5 |
WhosoHe keepethwho theobeys commandmenta shallcommand knowwill meet no evilharm thing; and the mind of a wise mansman heartwill discernethknow the time and judgment:way |
| 8:6 |
forFor to every purposematter therehas isits a time and judgment;way becausealthough themans miserytrouble oflies manheavy is great upon him: |
| 8:7 |
forFor he knowethdoes not thatknow whichwhat shallis to be; for who can tell him how it shallwill be |
| 8:8 |
ThereNo is no man thathas hath power over the spirit to retain the spirit; neitheror hathauthority he power over the day of death; and there is no discharge infrom war: neithernor shallwill wickedness deliver himthose thatwho isare given to it |
| 8:9 |
All this have I seenobserved andwhile appliedapplying my heartmind untoto everyall work that is done under the sun: therewhile is a time wherein one man hathlords powerit over anotherman to his hurt |
| 8:10 |
SoThen I saw the wicked buried; and they cameused to thego grave;in and theyout thatof had done right went away from the holy place and were forgottenpraised in the city: thiswhere they had done such things This also is vanity |
| 8:11 |
Because sentence against an evil workdeed is not executed speedily therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil |
| 8:12 |
Though a sinner dodoes evil a hundred times and prolongprolongs his dayslife yet surely I know that it shallwill be well with themthose thatwho fear God thatbecause they fear before him:; |
| 8:13 |
but it shallwill not be well with the wicked neither shallwill he prolong his days whichlike are as a shadow; because he fearethdoes not fear before God |
| 8:14 |
There is a vanity which istakes doneplace uponon the earth that there are righteous men untoto whom it happenethhappens according to the workdeeds of the wicked; againand there are wicked men to whom it happenethhappens according to the workdeeds of the righteous: I said that this also is vanity |
| 8:15 |
ThenAnd I commendedcommend mirthenjoyment becausefor a man hathhas no bettergood thing under the sun thanbut to eat and to drink and toenjoy behimself joyful: for thatthis shallwill abidego with him in his labortoil allthrough the days of his life which God hathgives given him under the sun |
| 8:16 |
When I applied my heartmind to know wisdom and to see the business that is done uponon the earth forhow also there is that neither day nor night seethones sleepeyes withsee hissleep; eyes |
| 8:17 |
then I beheldsaw all the work of God that man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun: becauseHowever however much a man labormay totoil seekin itseeking out yet he shallwill not find it out; yeaeven moreover though a wise man thinkclaims to know it yet shall he notcannot be able to find it out |
| 9:1 |
ForBut all this I laid to my heart evenexamining toit explore all this:how that the righteous and the wise and their worksdeeds are in the hand of God; whether it beis love or hatredhate man knowethdoes it not; allknow isEverything before them is vanity |
| 9:2 |
Allsince thingsone comefate alikecomes to all: there is one event to the righteous and to the wicked; to the good and the evil to the clean and to the unclean; to him thatwho sacrificethsacrifices and to him thatwho sacrificethdoes not; assacrifice As is the good man so is the sinner; and he thatwho swearethswears is as he thatwho fearethshuns an oath |
| 9:3 |
This is an evil in all that is done under the sun that thereone isfate onecomes eventto unto all:; yea also the hearthearts of the sons of men isare full of evil and madness is in their hearthearts while they live and after that they go to the dead |
| 9:4 |
ForBut tohe himwho that is joined with all the living therehas is hope; for a living dog is better than a dead lion |
| 9:5 |
For the living know that they shallwill die: but the dead know notnothing anythingand neitherthey have theyno any more a reward; forbut the memory of them is forgottenlost |
| 9:6 |
AsTheir well their love asand their hatredhate and their envy ishave already perished longand ago;they neither have theyno any more a portion for ever any share in anythingall that is done under the sun |
| 9:7 |
Go thy way eat thyyour bread with joyenjoyment and drink thyyour wine with a merry heart; for God hathhas already acceptedapproved thywhat worksyou do |
| 9:8 |
Let thyyour garments be always white; and let not thyoil headbe lacklacking oilon your head |
| 9:9 |
LiveEnjoy joyfullylife with the wife whom thouyou lovestlove all the days of thyyour vain life of vanity which he hathhas given theeyou under the sun allbecause thy days of vanity: for that is thyyour portion in life and in thyyour labortoil whereinat thouwhich laborestyou toil under the sun |
| 9:10 |
WhatsoeverWhatever thyyour hand findethfinds to do do it with thyyour might; for there is no work noror devicethought noror knowledge noror wisdom in Sheol whitherto thouwhich goestyou are going |
| 9:11 |
Again I returnedsaw andthat saw under the sun that the race is not to the swift nor the battle to the strong neithernor yet bread to the wise nor yet riches to menthe ofintelligent understanding nor yet favor to the men of skill; but time and chance happenethhappen to them all |
| 9:12 |
For man alsodoes knoweth not know his time: asLike thefish fisheswhich that are taken in an evil net and aslike the birds thatwhich are caught in thea snare even so are the sons of men are snared inat an evil time when it falleth suddenly falls upon them |
| 9:13 |
I have also seen this example of wisdom under the sun on this wise and it seemed great untoto me: |
| 9:14 |
There was a little city andwith few men withinin it; and there came a great king came against it and besieged it andbuilding built great bulwarkssiegeworks against it |
| 9:15 |
NowBut there was found in it a poor wise man and he by his wisdom delivered the city; yetYet no manone remembered that same poor man |
| 9:16 |
ThenBut said I Wisdomsay that wisdom is better than strength:might neverthelessthough the poor mans wisdom is despised and his words are not heard heeded |
| 9:17 |
The words of the wise heard in quiet are better than the cryshouting of hima thatruler ruleth among fools |
| 9:18 |
