4:3 Now Tobiah the Ammonite was bynear him, and he said, Even thatwhat which they are building, if a fox goshould upjump on it, he shallwould break down their stone wall. down!
4:4 Hear, O our God;, forhow we are despised:! andReturn turn back their reproach uponon their own head, heads and give them up for aplunder spoil in a land of captivity;.
4:5 andDo cover not forgive their iniquity, and let not their sin be blotted out from before thee;Thee, for they have provokeddemoralized thee to anger before the builders.
4:6 So we built the wall; and all the whole wall was joined together untoto half theits height, thereof: for the people had a mind to work.
4:7 ButNow it came toabout pass that, when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and the ArabiansArabs, and the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites, heard that the repairingrepair of the walls of Jerusalem went forwardon, and that the breaches began to be stoppedclosed, then they were very wroth;angry.
4:8 andAnd they conspired all of them conspired together to come and fight against Jerusalem, and to cause confusiona thereindisturbance in it.
4:9 But we madeprayed ourto prayer unto our God, and because of them we set up a watchguard against them day and night, because of them.
4:10 AndThus in Judah it was said, The strength of the burden bearers of burdens is decayedfailing, andYet there is much rubbish; soAnd that we ourselves are notunable ableTo torebuild build the wall.
4:11 And our adversariesenemies said, They shallwill not know, neitheror see, tilluntil we come intoamong thethem, midstkill of them, and slayput them,a andstop causeto the work to cease.
4:12 And it came toabout pass that, when the Jews thatwho dweltlived bynear them came, theyand saidtold unto us ten times, They will come up against us from allevery places, place Yewhere mustyou returnmay unto us.turn,
4:13 Thereforethen set I stationed men in the lowest parts of the space behind the wall, in the openexposed places, and I setstationed there the people afterin their families with their swords, their spears, and their bows.
4:14 AndWhen I lookedsaw their fear, andI rose up, and saidspoke untoto the nobles, and to the rulersofficials, and to the rest of the people,: BeDo not yebe afraid of them:; remember the Lord, who is great and terribleawesome, and fight for your brethrenbrothers, your sons, and your daughters, your wives, and your houses.
4:15 And it camehappened to pass, when our enemies heard that it was known untoto us, and that God had broughtfrustrated their counsel to noughtplan, thatthen we returned all of us returned to the wall, everyeach one untoto his work.
4:16 And it came toabout pass from that timeday forthon, that half of my servants wroughtcarried inon the work, andwhile half of them held the spears, the shields, and the bows, and the coats of mailbreastplates; and the rulerscaptains were behind all the whole house of Judah.
4:17 TheyThose thatwho buildedwere rebuilding the wall and theythose thatwho barecarried burdens ladedtook themselves;their everyload one with one ofhand hisdoing hands wrought in the work, and with the other heldholding hisa weapon;.
4:18 andAs for the builders, everyeach onewore had his sword girded byat his side, andas so builded. And he thatbuilt, soundedwhile the trumpettrumpeter wasstood bynear me.
4:19 And I said untoto the nobles, and to the rulersofficials, and to the rest of the people, The work is great and largeextensive, and we are separated uponon the wall, one far from one another:.
4:20 inAt whatwhatever place soeveryou ye hear the sound of the trumpet, resortrally yeto thitherus untothere. us;Our our God will fight for us.
4:21 So we wroughtcarried inon the work: andwith half of them heldholding the spears from thedawn risinguntil of the morning till the stars appeared.
4:22 LikewiseAt atthat thetime sameI timealso said Ito unto the people, Let everyeach oneman with his servant lodgespend the night within Jerusalem, so that in the night they may be a guard tofor us, by night and maya laborlaborer inby the day.
4:23 So neither I, nor my brethrenbrothers, nor my servants, nor the men of the guard thatwho followed me, none of us putremoved off our clothes, everyeach onetook went with his weapon even to the water.
5:1 ThenNow there arosewas a great cryoutcry of the people and of their wives against their brethrenJewish the Jewsbrothers.
5:2 For there were thatthose who said, We, our sons and our daughters, are many:; therefore let us get grain, that we may eat and live.
5:3 SomeAnd also there were thatothers who said, We are mortgaging our fields, and our vineyards, and our houses: letthat uswe might get grain, because of the dearthfamine.
5:4 ThereAlso there were alsothose thatwho said, We have borrowed money for the kings tributetax uponon our fields and our vineyards.
5:5 YetAnd now our flesh is aslike the flesh of our brethrenbrothers, our children aslike their children:. and,Yet lobehold, we bringare intoforcing bondage our sons and our daughters to be servantsslaves, and some of our daughters are broughtforced into bondage already:, neitherand iswe itare inhelpless ourbecause power to help it; for other men have our fields and ourvineyards vineyardsbelong to others.
5:6 AndThen I was very angry when I had heard their cryoutcry and these words.
5:7 ThenAnd I consulted with myself, and contended with the nobles and the rulers, and said untoto them, YeYou exactare exacting usury, everyeach onefrom of his brother.! AndTherefore, I held a great assembly against them.
5:8 And I said untoto them, We afteraccording to our ability have redeemed our brethrenJewish thebrothers Jews, who that were sold untoto the nations; andnow would yeyou even sell your brethren, brothers andthat should they may be sold untoto us? Then held they theirwere peace, silent and foundcould nevernot find a word to say.
5:9 AlsoAgain I said, The thing thatwhich yeyou doare doing is not good:; oughtshould yeyou not to walk in the fear of our God, because of the reproach of the nations, our enemies?
5:10 And likewise I likewise, my brethrenbrothers and my servants, doare lendlending them money and grain. I pray youPlease, let us leave off this usury.
5:11 RestorePlease, Igive prayback you, to them, even this very day, their fields, their vineyards, their oliveyardsolive groves, and their houses, also the hundredth part of the money, and of the grain, the new wine, and the oil, that yeyou exactare ofexacting from them.
5:12 Then they said they, We will restoregive them,it back and will require nothing offrom them; sowe will we do, evenexactly as thouyou sayestsay. ThenSo I called the priests, and took an oath offrom them, that they would do according to this promise.
5:13 Also I also shook out the front of my lap, garment and said, SoThus may God shake out every man from his house, and from his labor, possessions thatwho performethdoes not fulfill this promise; even thus bemay he be shaken out, and emptied. And all the assembly said, Amen,! andAnd they praised Jehovahthe Lord. AndThen the people did according to this promise.
5:14 Moreover, from the timeday that I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah, from the twentieth year evento unto the twothirty andsecond thirtieth year of King Artaxerxes the king, thatfor is, twelve years, neither I andnor my brethrenkinsmen have not eaten the breadgovernors offood the governorallowance.
5:15 But the former governors thatwho were before me werelaid chargeableburdens untoon the people, and took offrom them bread and wine, besides forty shekels of silver; yea, even their servants baredomineered rule over the people:. butBut soI did not I,do so because of the fear of God.
5:16 Yea,And I also Iapplied continuedmyself into the work ofon this wall,; neitherwe boughtdid wenot buy any land:, and all my servants were gathered thitherthere untofor the work.
5:17 Moreover, there were at my table, ofone thehundred Jews and thefifty rulers,Jews a hundred and fifty menofficials, besides those thatwho came untoto us from among the nations that were roundaround about us.
5:18 Now that which was prepared for oneeach day was one ox and six choice sheep;, also fowlsbirds were prepared for me,; and once in ten days store of all sorts of wine: yetwere furnished in abundance. Yet for all this I demandeddid not demand the breadgovernors offood the governorallowance, because the bondageservitude was heavy uponon this people.
5:19 Remember unto me, O my God, for good, according to all that I have done for this people.
6:1 Now it came toabout pass, when it was reported to Sanballat, and Tobiah, and to Geshem the ArabianArab, and untoto the rest of our enemies, that I had buildedrebuilt the wall, and that there was no breach leftremained thereinin thoughit, evenalthough untoat that time I had not set up the doors in the gates,
6:2 that Sanballat and Geshem sent untoa message to me, saying, Come, let us meet together inat oneChephirim of the villages in the plain of Ono. But they thoughtwere planning to doharm me mischief.
6:3 AndSo I sent messengers untoto them, saying, I am doing a great work, soand that I cannot come down:. whyWhy should the work cease, stop whilstwhile I leave it, and come down to you?
6:4 And they sent untomessages to me four times afterin this sort;manner, and I answered them afterin the same mannerway.
6:5 Then Sanballat sent Sanballat his servant untoto me in likethe same manner thea fifth time with an open letter in his hand,.
6:6 whereinIn it was written, It is reported among the nations, and Gashmu saith itsays, that thouyou and the Jews thinkare planning to rebel; fortherefore whichyou causeare thourebuilding art building the wall:. andAnd thouyou wouldestare to be their king, according to these wordsreports.
6:7 And thouyou hasthave also appointed prophets to preachproclaim ofin theeJerusalem atconcerning Jerusalemyou, saying,A Thereking is a king in Judah:! andAnd now shall it will be reported to the king according to these wordsreports. ComeSo come now therefore, and let us take counsel together.
6:8 Then I sent untoa message to him, saying, ThereSuch arethings noas suchyou thingsare donesaying ashave thounot sayestbeen done, but thouyou feignestare inventing them outin ofyour thine own heartmind.
6:9 For they all wouldof havethem madewere trying to frighten us afraid, sayingthinking, TheirThey handswill shallbecome bediscouraged weakenedwith from the work, thatand it bewill not be done. But now, O God, strengthen thou my hands.
6:10 And when I wententered unto the house of Shemaiah the son of Delaiah, the son of Mehetabel, who was shutconfined up;at andhome, he said, Let us meet together in the house of God, within the temple, and let us shutclose the doors of the temple:, for they willare comecoming to slaykill thee; yeayou, inand thethey nightare willcoming theyto comekill toyou slayat theenight.
6:11 AndBut I said, Should such a man aslike Ime flee? andAnd whocould isone there, that, being such as I, would go into the temple to save his life? I will not go in.
6:12 AndThen I discerned, perceived and, that lo,surely God had not sent him;, but he pronounceduttered thishis prophecy against me: andbecause Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him.
6:13 ForHe thiswas causehired wasfor hethis hiredreason, that I shouldmight bebecome afraid, frightened and doact so,accordingly and sin, andso that they might have matter for an evil report, in order that they mightcould reproach me.
6:14 Remember, O my God, Tobiah and Sanballat according to these theirworks worksof theirs, and also Noadiah the prophetess Noadiah, and the rest of the prophets, thatwho wouldwere havetrying putto frighten me in fear.
6:15 So the wall was finishedcompleted inon the twenty and fifth day of the month Elul, in fifty and two days.
6:16 And it came toabout pass, when all our enemies heard thereofof it, thatand all the nations thatsurrounding wereus aboutsaw us fearedit, andthey werelost much cast down in their own eyesconfidence; for they perceivedrecognized that this work washad wroughtbeen accomplished with the help of our God.
6:17 MoreoverAlso in those days many letters went from the nobles of Judah sentto many letters unto Tobiah, and theTobiahs letters of Tobiah came untoto them.
6:18 For there were many in Judah swornwere untobound by oath to him, because he was the son in law of Shecaniah the son of Arah;, and his son Jehohanan had takenmarried the daughter of Meshullam the son of Berechiah to wife.
6:19 AlsoMoreover, they spakewere ofspeaking about his good deeds beforein me,my presence and reported my words to him. AndThen Tobiah sent letters to putfrighten me in fear.
7:1 Now it came toabout pass, when the wall was built, rebuilt and I had set up the doors, and the portersgatekeepers and the singers and the Levites were appointed,
7:2 that I gaveput Hanani my brother Hanani, and Hananiah the governorcommander of the castlefortress, in charge overof Jerusalem;, for he was a faithful man, and feared God abovemore than many.
7:3 AndThen I said untoto them, LetDo not let the gates of Jerusalem be opened until the sun beis hot;, and while they standare onstanding guard, let them shut the doors, and barbolt yethe them:doors. andAlso appoint watchesguards offrom the inhabitants of Jerusalem, everyeach oneat in his watchpost, and everyeach onein tofront beof overhis againstown his house.
7:4 Now the city was widelarge and large;spacious, but the people in it were few therein, and the houses were not buildedbuilt.
7:5 AndThen my God put it into my heart to gatherassemble together the nobles, and the rulersofficials, and the people, thatto they might be reckonedenrolled by genealogygenealogies. 12:27 AndNow at the dedication of the wall of Jerusalem they sought out the Levites outfrom of all their places, to bring them to Jerusalem, toso keepthat they might celebrate the dedication with gladness, both with thanksgivings, hymns of thanksgiving and with singing, songs withto the accompaniment of cymbals, psalteriesharps, and with harpslyres.
12:28 AndSo the sons of the singers gatheredwere themselvesassembled together, from both out of the plaindistrict roundaround about Jerusalem, and from the villages of the Netophathites;,
12:29 also from Beth gilgal, and outfrom oftheir the fields ofin Geba and Azmaveth:, for the singers had buildedbuilt themthemselves villages roundaround about Jerusalem.
12:30 And the priests and the Levites purified themselves; and they also purified the people, and the gates, and the wall.
12:31 Then I broughthad up the princesleaders of Judah uponcome up on top of the wall, and I appointed two great companieschoirs, thatthe gavefirst thanksproceeding andto wentthe inright procession; whereof one went on thetop rightof hand upon the wall toward the dungRefuse gate:Gate.
12:32 and after them went Hoshaiah, and half of the princesleaders of Judah followed them,
12:33 andwith Azariah, Ezra, and Meshullam,
12:34 Judah, and Benjamin, and Shemaiah, and Jeremiah,

12:37 And byat the fountainFountain gate,Gate and straight before them, they went directly up by the stairssteps of the city of David, atby the ascentstairway of the wall, above the house of David, evento unto the waterWater gateGate eastwardon the east.
12:38 AndThe thesecond otherchoir companyproceeded of them that gave thanks went to meetthe themleft, andwhile I afterfollowed them, with the half of the people, uponon the wall, above the towerTower of the furnacesFurnaces, evento unto the broadBroad wallWall,
12:39 and above the gateGate of Ephraim, and by the oldOld gateGate, and by the fishFish gateGate, and the towerTower of Hananel, and the towerTower of Hammeahthe Hundred, evenas untofar as the sheepSheep gate:Gate, and they stoodstopped stillat in the gateGate of the guardGuard.
12:40 SoThen stood the two companieschoirs oftook themtheir thatstand gave thanks in the house of God,. andSo did I, and the half of the rulersofficials with me;
12:41 and the priests, Eliakim, Maaseiah, Miniamin, Micaiah, Elioenai, Zechariah, and Hananiah, with the trumpets;
12:42 and Maaseiah, and Shemaiah, and Eleazar, and Uzzi, and Jehohanan, and Malchijah, and Elam, and Ezer. And the singers sang loud, with Jezrahiah their overseer.leader,
12:43 Andand on that day they offered great sacrifices that day, and rejoiced; forbecause God had madegiven them rejoice with great joy;, andeven the women also and the children rejoiced:, so that the joy of Jerusalem was heard evenfrom afar off.
12:44 AndOn on that day men were menalso appointed over the chambers for the treasuresstores, for the heave offeringscontributions, for the first fruits, and for the tithes, to gather into them, accordingfrom to the fields of the cities, the portions appointedrequired by the law for the priests and Levites:; for Judah rejoiced forover the priests and for the Levites thatwho waitedserved.
12:45 AndFor they keptperformed the chargeworship of their God, and the chargeservice of the purification, andtogether sowith did the singers and the porters, gatekeepers accordingin toaccordance with the commandmentcommand of David, and of Solomon his son Solomon.
12:46 For in the days of David and Asaph, ofin oldancient times, there waswere aleaders chief of the singers, and songs of praise and hymns of thanksgiving untoto God.
12:47 And so all Israel in the days of Zerubbabel, and in the days of Nehemiah, gave the portions ofdue the singers and the porters, gatekeepers as everyeach day required:, and they set apart thatthe whichconsecrated wasportion for the Levites;, and the Levites set apart thatthe whichconsecrated wasportion for the sons of Aaron.
13:1 On that day they read inaloud from the book of Moses in the audiencehearing of the people; and thereinthere was found written, in it that anno Ammonite andor a Moabite should notever enter into the assembly of God for ever,
13:2 because they metdid not meet the childrensons of Israel with bread and with water, but hired Balaam against them, to curse them:. howbeitHowever, our God turned the curse into a blessing.
13:3 AndSo it came to passabout, that when they had heard the law, that they separatedexcluded from Israel all theforeigners mixedfrom multitudeIsrael.
13:4 Now beforeprior to this, Eliashib the priest, who was appointed over the chambers of the house of our God, being alliedrelated untoto Tobiah,
13:5 had prepared fora himlarge aroom greatfor chamberhim, where aforetimeformerly they laidput the mealgrain offerings, the frankincense, and the vesselsutensils, and the tithes of the grain, the new wine, and the oil, whichprescribed werefor given by commandment to the Levites, and the singers, and the porters;gatekeepers, and the heavecontributions offerings for the priests.
13:6 But induring all this time I was not atin Jerusalem;, for in the twothirty andsecond thirtieth year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon I wenthad untogone to the king:. andAfter aftersome certaintime, dayshowever, I asked I leave offrom the king,
13:7 and I came to Jerusalem, and understoodlearned about the evil that Eliashib had done for Tobiah, inby preparing him a chamberroom for him in the courts of the house of God.
13:8 And it grievedwas very displeasing to me, sore:so therefore I castthrew forth all theof Tobiahs household stuffgoods of Tobiah out of the chamberroom.
13:9 Then I commanded, gave an order and they cleansed the chambers:rooms; and thitherI broughtreturned Ithere again the vesselsutensils of the house of God, with the mealgrain offerings and the frankincense.
13:10 And I perceivedalso discovered that the portions of the Levites had not been given them;, so that the Levites and the singers, thatwho didperformed the work, service werehad fledgone everyaway, oneeach to his own field.
13:11 ThenSo contended I withreprimanded the rulers, officials and said, Why is the house of God forsaken? AndThen I gathered them together, and setrestored them into their placeposts.
13:12 ThenAll broughtJudah allthen Judahbrought the tithe of the grain, and the new wine, and the oil untointo the treasuriesstorehouses.
13:13 And Iin madecharge treasurersof over the treasuries, storehouses I appointed Shelemiah the priest, and Zadok the scribe, and Pedaiah of the Levites, Pedaiah: and nextin addition to them was Hanan the son of Zaccur, the son of Mattaniah; for they were countedconsidered faithfulreliable, and it was their businesstask was to distribute untoto their brethrenkinsmen.
13:14 Remember me for this, O my God, concerning this, and wipedo not blot out my goodloyal deeds thatwhich I have doneperformed for the house of my God, and forits the observances thereofservices.
13:15 In those days I saw I in Judah some menwho were treading winepresseswine presses on the sabbath, and bringing in sheaves, sacks of grain and ladingloading assesthem therewith;on donkeys, as alsowell as wine, grapes, and figs, and all mannerkinds of burdensloads, whichand they brought them into Jerusalem on the sabbath day:. andSo I testifiedadmonished against them inon the day wherein they sold victualsfood.
13:16 ThereAlso dwelt men of Tyre alsowere therein, living there who broughtimported in fish, and all mannerkinds of waresmerchandise, and sold onthem to the sabbathsons untoof theJudah childrenon ofthe Judahsabbath, andeven in Jerusalem.
13:17 Then I contendedreprimanded with the nobles of Judah, and said untoto them, What is this evil thing isyou thisare that ye dodoing, andby profaneprofaning the sabbath day?
13:18 Did not your fathers thus,do andthe didsame notso that our God bringbrought allon this evil upon us, and uponon this city, all this trouble? yetYet yeyou bringare moreadding to the wrath uponon Israel by profaning the sabbath.
13:19 And it came toabout pass that, whenjust as it grew dark at the gates of Jerusalem began to be dark before the sabbath, I commanded that the doors should be shut, and commanded that they should not beopen openedthem tilluntil after the sabbath:. andThen I stationed some of my servants setat I over the gates, that there should no burdenload beshould broughtenter in on the sabbath day.
13:20 SoOnce or twice the merchantstraders and sellersmerchants of allevery kind of waresmerchandise lodgedspent withoutthe Jerusalemnight onceoutside or twiceJerusalem.
13:21 Then I testifiedwarned against them, and said untoto them, Why lodgedo yeyou aboutspend the night in front of the wall? ifIf yeyou do so again, I will layuse handsforce onagainst you. From that time forthon came they nodid morenot come on the sabbath.
13:22 And I commanded the Levites that they should purify themselves, and that they should come andas keepgatekeepers the gates, to sanctify the sabbath day. RememberFor untothis also remember me, O my God, thisand also, have andcompassion spareon me according to the greatness of thyThy lovingkindness.
13:23 In those days I also saw Ithat the Jews that had married women offrom Ashdod, of Ammon, and of Moab:.
13:24 andAs for their children, spake half spoke in the speechlanguage of Ashdod, and couldnone notof them was able to speak in the Jewslanguage languageof Judah, but according to the language of eachhis own people.
13:25 AndSo I contended with them, and cursed them, and smotestruck certainsome of them, and pluckedpulled offout their hair, and made them swear by God, saying,You Ye shall not give your daughters untoto their sons, nor take of their daughters for your sons, or for yourselves.
13:26 Did not Solomon king of Israel sin byregarding these things? yetYet among the many nations there was there no king like him, and he was belovedloved ofby his God, and God made him king over all Israel:; nevertheless eventhe him did foreign women causecaused even him to sin.
13:27 ShallDo we then hearkenhear untoabout you tothat doyou have committed all this great evil, toby trespassacting unfaithfully against our God inby marrying foreign women?
13:28 AndEven one of the sons of Joiada, the son of Eliashib the high priest, was a son in law toof Sanballat the Horonite:, thereforeso I chaseddrove him away from me.
13:29 Remember them, O my God, because they have defiled the priesthood, and the covenant of the priesthood, and of the Levites.
13:30 Thus cleansed I purified them from alleverything foreigners, foreign and appointed chargesduties for the priests and for the Levites, everyeach one in his work;task,
13:31 and I arranged for the supply of wood offering, at appointed times appointed, and for the first fruits. Remember me, O my God, for good.
